Moonlight Amphitheatre 6/8-25 Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella: The San Diego Regional Premiere production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella comes to the stage this summer. Based on the classic tale from the 1957 television special, this contemporary version offers plenty of surprises and new music from the Rodgers and Hammerstein catalog. It features the beloved songs “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It’s Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago,” alongside a hilarious and romantic libretto by Tony Award nominee Douglas Carter Beane. 6/28 The Official Blues Brothers Revue: Las Vegas performers Wayne Catania and Kieron Lafferty, who are backed by a powerhouse band, capture the infectious humor and unbridled spirit of the Blues Brothers. 6/29 ABBA-Mania: The rock musical takes the audience back in time to the disco era, where the Swedish super group ruled the disco airwaves with super hits. 7/1 Queen Nation: Queen Nation preserves the image, sound, and stage persona of vintage Queen, rocking through hits such as “We Will Rock You,” “We are the Champions,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” 7/2 Summer of Soul: It was the summer of 1969 when the Harlem Culture Festival began a musical revolution with the performances of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Gladys Knight and The Pips, B.B. King, and The 5th Dimension. Award-winning San Diego musical artists re-create and pay tribute to the artists and sounds of this era. 7/6-7 Classic Albums Live: Classic Albums Live returns to The Moonlight to re-create and perform legendary rock albums note-by-note and cut-by-cut. On July 6, the show features Pink Floyd’s album in its entirety track-by-track, followed by a greatest hits set. The July 7 performance showcases the greatest hits of The Eagles. 7/8 Yachtley Crew: The titans of soft rock are back after a stellar sold-out concert last summer. Get ready to cruise through the greatest hits of the ‘70s and ‘80s with the Los Angeles-based band of talented and tenured musicians. 7/9 British Invasion Years: This show is chock full of the groovy sights and sounds from both sides of the Atlantic, starting with a parade of hits from The Zombies, The Dave Clark Five, The Rolling Stones, and The Hollies. The American response follows, with the biggest hits of The Monkees, Simon and Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, and The Mamas and The Papas. The journey through the ‘60s concludes with The Beatles. 7/20 – 8/6 Something Rotten: Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce Something Rotten. Something Rotten was lauded by audience members and critics alike, receiving several Best Musical nominations and a Grammy® for its original cast recording. 8/17 – 9/3 Ragtime: Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and noted playwright Terrence McNally, Ragtime is the winner of the 1998 Tony® Award for Best Score and Book and Orchestrations, and the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and Best Score. Based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel, three distinctly American tales are woven together. 9/14 – 10/1 Kinky Boots: Kinky Boots, the winner of six Tony® Awards, makes its San Diego Regional Premiere on the Moonlight stage. The production features a Tony®-winning score by Cyndi Lauper, and a hilarious, uplifting book by four-time Tony® winner Harvey Fierstein. Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots takes audiences from a gentleman’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. 10/14 – 22 Mary Poppins: Mary Poppins flies over the rooftops of London and onto the Moonlight stage, as Moonlight Youth Theatre brings this beloved classic to audience members. The enchanting story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking production numbers, and dazzling flying effects, delight theatergoers of all ages. Moonlight Amphitheatre is located at 1250 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista. For more information, call (760) 724-2110 or visit www.moonlightstage.com.

North Coast Repertory Theatre The Outgoing Tide June 8-July 3 Fiercely proud and battling the torments of an aging mind and an uncertain future, one man devises a plan, but his family has other ideas. Deftly moving between past and present, playwright Bruce Graham weaves a highly relatable story sprinkled with surprising humor and powerful emotions. This touching family drama poses thought-provoking questions about personal choice and what it means to truly love someone. Remembering Olympia June 13 Remembering Olympia is a tribute and celebration of the life and career of the late Olympia Dukakis, created in her loving memory by her brother Apollo. Consisting of a one-act play chronicling their turbulent but close relationship, the evening also salutes her films, stage work, and family and friends through a montage of film clips and photos. Kandis Chappell and Apollo Dukakis portray the brother and sister. The evening concludes with a Q & A with the audience. The Remarkable Mister Holmes July 20-August 14 In 1890s London, a string of baffling crimes challenges the world’s most notorious detective Sherlock Holmes and his new assistant. Not only do they sleuth and scrutinize, but they also sing. Fast-paced, outrageous, and irreverent, this world-premiere musical is a loving homage to the original Arthur Conan Doyle tales. What’s Inside That Sexy Brain of Yours? July 25 Don’t miss a night of laughter and mind-blowing mystery, as De’Anna Nunez invites members of her audience to journey through their imagination in hypnosis. Nunez has appeared on more than 250 stages around the world. She returns to her hometown on the North Coast Rep stage. North Coast Repertory Theatre is located at 987 Lomas Santa Fe, Suite D, Solana Beach. For more information, call (858) 481-1055 or visit www.northcoastrep.org.

La Jolla Art and Wine Festival October 8-9, 10am-6pm Stunning coastal views and an upscale downtown experience set the scene for the La Jolla Art and Wine Festival on October 8 and 9. From 10am to 6pm each day, festival goers can stroll down Girard Avenue, while browsing a prestigious collection of fine art and sipping on regional and international wines, craft beer, and spirits. There are also plenty of fun activities for the entire family. Last year’s event sold out for both days. More than 160 artists from the United States and Mexico are at the festival to showcase their exquisite creations. The artwork on display spans across a number of media, such as paintings, sculpture, jewelry, fine glass, ceramics, wood, mixed media, and photography. This year’s featured artists are Daniel and Jeff Bommarito, who are brothers on a mission to enhance everyday spaces with unique and exceptional photography. The festival is a favorite among vino enthusiasts as well. The iconic wine and beer garden highlights more than 35 international wineries, local craft breweries, and craft distilleries. There is continuous live music in the garden throughout the day, ranging from jazz to pop to rock to opera. Along with a two-day silent auction, 15 pet adoption stations and an all-star line-up of live entertainment and music, there is something for everyone. All profits raised benefit underfunded programs such as art, music, science, physical education, technology and on-site medical care at all La Jolla public schools. Since its inception, the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival has donated more than $1,000,000 to these schools for the educational benefit of more than 4,000 children. Looking for a New Career? CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate In December 2015, Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program in May 2017 and immediately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local corporations so they can integrate into the globalized economy. The job application required a TESL/TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. He received a swift offer and six weeks after earning his TESL/TEFL certificate, Havenor was heading AMERICAN LANGUAGE & CULTURE INSTITUTE N O R T H

to Dnipro, Ukraine, for a four-month teaching assignment. “I was thinking I was really retired,” he says. “This program has validated my professional life since being laid off and has given me a sense of contentment that I was missing. It was the bridge that has enabled this new life I am now going to have.” Designed for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language. The program provides professional development and employment guidance with a strong emphasis on handson training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by master teachers with extensive experience in TESL/TEFL, teacher train-

ing, and curriculum development. Participants receive ample opportunities for developing effective lesson plans and syllabi, practicing classroom management strategies, peer-teaching, and classroom facilitation. The 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week, and the 6-week summer intensive course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week. Patron–Tortilleria and Carniceria Patron is the place to find all your summer barbecue, Father’s Day, Fourth of July, and Memorial Day weekend favorites. We love Patron and the owners and their friendly staff and want everyone in San Marcos and nearby communities to know where to find the best authentic Mexican fresh-made street tacos ($1.79); hot, fresh, handmade daily tortillas (10 for $4.29); and Carne Asada combo plates for $8.99. Thinking about having a holiday party? Patron does catering! Patron is a full-service butcher shop (carniceria) a Mexican restaurant, and a Mexican grocery store. They have a wide selection of fresh made salsa, Mexican-style guacamole, Mexican cheeses, tortilla chips, canned goods, fresh fruit, and vegetables, including locally-grown tomatoes, avocados, lemons and papayas. Their butcher shop display is filled with steak, beef, chicken, goat, and pork. Buy your carne asada here!

Locals and Mexican-Americans already know how amazing this place is. Try their authentic Mexican food and you will be back often. Pick up fresh made hot tamales in the morning! Why buy mass-produced tortillas when you can go to Patron and pick up freshly made, piping hot tortillas? The best time for hot tortillas is around 4-5pm. Tacos are made to order! Have Patron custom make your tacos. For your taco meat, we recommend Birria, a flavorful beef or goat stewed meat, or their chicken mole. Top off your taco with red or green salsa, Mexican avocado sauce, cheese, onions, and fresh sliced lime. They have an assortment of Agua Frescas $3.95 for a large 32 oz. drink. They sell out of tamales and tortillas, so get there early or call-in your order ahead! Catering is available at $15.99/per person (minimum 50 people). Patron is located at 204 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos 92078. Call (760) 736-0086.

San Diego Pride Week July 9-17

San Diego Pride features a week of several vibrant events to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. The celebration kicks off with SheFest, a woman-centered event, on July 9 at the Hillcrest Pride Flag. From 5:30 to 7:30pm on July 11, the Pride Business Mixer comes to Gossip Grill. The capacity has been doubled from last year’s event, making it the largest LGBTQ+ business mixer in San Diego. For the first time in 4 years, the San Diego Equality Business Association unveils a new business directory at the event. The Spirit of Stonewall Rally is on July 15. The origins of the global Pride movement trace back to the Stonewall riots of 1969, an uprising against police brutality. The Spirit of Stonewall Rally recognizes the leaders who are working hard to meet the many challenges still facing the LGBTQ+ community today. It is from 6 to 7pm at the Hillcrest Pride Flag. The week culminates with the San Diego Pride Festival on July 16 and 17. There is live entertainment from more than 100 performers on four stages. There is fun for all ages at the festival, with a children’s garden and a Youth Zone for young attendees. The children’s garden offers a toddler play area, face painting, arts and crafts, a balloon artist, a playhouse giveaway, and tasty treats. As a prelude to the festival, there is a 5K Walk and Run through Hillcrest from 8am to 10am on July 16. It is followed by the San Diego Pride Parade at 10am. 69th Annual World Championship Over-The-Line Tournament July 9-10 and 16-17 For the 69th year, Old Mission Beach Athletic Club brings the Over-The-Line (OTL) Tournament to Mission Bay’s Fiesta Island Park. The tournament attracts an international crowd of participants and spectators each year. It takes place over two weekends from July 9 to 10 and July 16 to 17. Games begin promptly at 7:30am and continue until dark. Over-The-Line participants compete in a softball-like bat and ball sport. Three-player teams are encouraged to create unique and unusual names for their teams and many participate while wearing wild costumes. The court is made of a rope triangle in the sand. Hits are made when a ball is hit into fair territory on the fly without being caught by fielders, when any ball is touched and dropped by fielders, or when fielders cross “the line” or any of its extensions when attempting to catch a ball. Three hits in an inning scores one run, while each additional hit in that same inning scores one

more run, and a home run “clears the bases.” On the first weekend of play, teams compete in three-inning games. On the second weekend of play, teams participate in four-inning games. The Over-The-Line Tournament is a free public event and while there are no age restrictions, it is recommended that attendees are 18 years old or older. There are several stands to purchase hot food and cold non-alcoholic drinks. Parking is available adjacent to the playing area and at the northeast corner of Sea World Drive and Pacific Highway. Free shuttle buses are provided for convenience. Fiesta Island Park is located at 1590 East Mission Bay Drive, San Diego. For more information, visit www. ombac.org/over-the-line.

Beach Bocce World Championship September 17 Each year, the annual Beach Bocce World Championship attracts more than 450 two-person teams that compete for the title of World Champion in four divisions. It has previously been held at Del Mar’s Dog Beach, but this year’s tournament is at a brand-new location on Mariner’s Point in Mission Bay. More than 350 bodysurfers from around the world will gather at Oceanside Pier on August 21 and 22 for the World Bodysurfing Championships. The championships have been around for 45 years. They feature competition in various age divisions. Preliminaries for all age divisions are held on Saturday, August 21, with a projected start time of 6:30am. Semi-finals and finals take place on Sunday, August 22, with Men’s and Women’s Grand Champions being crowned in the afternoon. For those unfamiliar with the sport of bodysurfing, bodysurfers ride waves without the assistance of any buoyant device, such as a surfboard or body board. They equip themselves only with a pair of specialized swim fins that help to optimize propulsion so it’s easier to catch large and fast breaking waves. World Bodysurfing Championship event organizers reserve the right to change the projected schedule for various weather, surf conditions, and quantity of competitors. For more information, visit www.worldbodysurfing.org.
