Oceanside Theatre Company at the Brooks Theater Presents: Good People
May 12-28
This Tony nominated play by David Lindsay-Abaire is a heartfelt emotional drama broken up by poignant moments of laughaloud humor. Good People by David Lindsay-Abaire will have audiences debating what it means to do the right thing.
Middle-aged Margie Walsh is a nice woman from a poor neighborhood. Some of her friends might even say she’s TOO nice. When she gets fired from yet another job, her landlord threatens eviction. Determined to keep a roof over her daughter’s head, she turns to a former
friend, who made it out of their neighborhood of Southie, as they call South Boston, for help finding a job. From the moment she steps into Dr. Michael Dillon’s office, tensions mount in this reunion of old friends as they navigate the decisions that led them down different life paths.
“OTC initially planned to mount Good People in the Summer of 2020, but those plans were scuttled when the pandemic shut down theaters around the world. This timeless, critically-acclaimed play premiered on Broadway in 2011 and was nominated for two Tony-Awards, including Best Play,” said Artistic Director Ted Leib. “The story poses thought-provoking questions around the classes we are born into, how we struggle to change, obligations
to those around us, and what role decisions play in our lives–all ideas that are just as pertinent today as they were when it was written a decade ago. Audiences will enjoy the engaging story full of laughter, surprises and a lot of heart.”
Directed by: Sandy Campbell and Associate Director Danny Campbell. Cast includes: Susan Clausen – Margaret; Ted Leib – Mike; Amira Temple – Kate; Sherri Allen – Jean; Heidi Bridges – Dottie; Dennis Peters – Stevie.
Preview night is Friday, May 12. Opening night is Saturday, May 13. Showtimes are 8pm on Fri and Sat, 2 pm on Sun, and 2 pm on Sat, with the exception of opening weekend. Tickets range from $20-45. For tickets, visit www. OceansideTheatre.org or the box office at (760) 433-8900.

Cruisin’ Grand Escondido April-September
Escondido’s Grand Avenue is the place to be on Friday nights through September, as the streets are taken over by a parade of pre-1970s automobiles for Cruisin’ Grand. All kinds of vintage autos – from American Hot Rods, Classics, Antiques, and Customs – span seven blocks of the city’s downtown area. In addition to classic cars, attendees can also enjoy all that downtown Escondido has to offer, including great restaurants, breweries and pubs, stores, boutiques, and live performance venues.
It’s widely known that Cruisin’ Grand was Steve Waldron’s idea. Steve used to cruise Valley Parkway on
Friday and Saturday nights in the ‘70s. He’d go to the T-Bird Diner and think what a shame it was that the hot rods were parked instead of cruising. He started to think that “Grand Avenue was an exceptional street to have a cruise on, a street with great ambience.” The City and Escondido Police Department quickly got on board and their support has been crucial to the success of Cruisin’ Grand.
Cruisin’ Grand takes place on Grand Avenue, from Orange Street to Ivy Street, in downtown Escondido. For more information, visit www.cruisingrand.net

There is plenty of other entertainment for spectators to enjoy while meandering through the sea of fine automotive specimens. Spectators can relax in sweet bliss at the Champagne and Honey Tasting Garden, and live music rounds out the festivities.

Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana
By Andy LeeI have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown.
I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her English-speaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border, parked my car on the U.S. side, and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge). The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. The elevator attendant opened the elevator door for me. The elevator door opened, and across the hall, Dr. Baker’s office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S., and better than most, with all the latest equipment.
I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me headphones to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.

It’s hard to see the layers of ricotta cheese, a mixture of beef, chicken, and sausage, fresh Roma tomato, mushroom, and parmesan atop marinara sauce, because it’s completely covered with a very light and creamy béchamel sauce. It’s absolutely delicious. Other recommended dishes include: Calamari Fritti Antipasti, with lightly battered, deep fried calamari served with piquant marinara sauce; Risotto Portofino, grilled jumbo shrimp served with artichoke hearts and asparagus, surrounding a center mound of risotto. from Carolina Reaper peppers, the hottest in the world! We recently tried the medium, and even the medium had a little burn, which was nice. We ordered their slider/tender combo with crinkle cut fries. The juicy chicken breast fillets were large and tasty. We ordered our sliders with cheese and mixed honey with Dave’s dipping sauce (as the staff recommended). Very nice. The flavors of sweet and spicy danced around our mouths. We also tried a vanilla shake. If you like shakes like we do, we promise you will be very happy. It was creamy, and had the perfect consistency of not too thick, that you need a spoon, to not too thin. Also, very nice.

July 7-September 1, 8:30pm
There isn’t a photo or video that does the Pageant of The Masters justice. You truly have to experience this unique one-of-a-kind art/theatre recreations with your own eyes. Since 1933, the Pageant of the Masters has been fascinating audiences with recreations of classic and contemporary works of art. Theatrical illusion and real people pose as living pictures, accompanied by a professional orchestra and a live narrator who serves as a guide through the story of each recreation. Each night’s Pageant performance ends with a spectacular vivant recreation of Michalengelo’s The Last Supper. The production takes place nightly at 8:30pm from July 7 through September 1.
The theme for 2023 is “”Art Colony: In the Company of Artists.” Director Diane Challis Davy once again collaborates with veteran Pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling to create a kaleidoscope of international art. It will also feature other memorable stories of artists assisting one another through cooperation and fellowship in vastly different eras and circumstances around the world.

The San Diego Museum of Art–O’Keeffe and Moore Exhibition May 13- Aug 7
The San Diego Museum of Art presents O’Keeffe and Moore, a groundbreaking exhibition uniting the work of these artistic giants for the first time, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art from May 13 to August 27. The exhibition re-creates both Georgia O’Keeffe’s and Henry Moore’s studios with their original found objects, tools, and furnishings. Visitors can experience the working practices of the two artists to see how natural forms such as animal skulls and bones, coiled seashells, gnarled driftwood, and interlocking and layered stones inspired the majority of their most iconic creations, and see more than 120 works of art by the two artists on view across five galleries. Although they lived an ocean apart, O’Keeffe and Moore pioneered and shared a coherent vision and approach to Modernism. While
some other Modernist artists also used natural forms as a pathway to abstraction, no other artists amassed such vast collections of found objects and centered their art on this fundamental aspect. The exhibition, which includes significant works from the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the Henry Moore Foundation as well as nearly 30 other museums, institutions, and lenders, begins with both artists’ studies from life and experimentations with Surrealism, incorporating concepts such as juxtapositions of unlikely forms, ambiguity of scale, and metamorphosis.
Funding for this exhibition is made possible by Lisa and Charles Hellerich, the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, the National Endowment for the Arts, Lani and Joe Curtis, Eileen and Robert Hunt, and PNC Bank. Additional support is provided by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and the members of The San Diego Museum of Art. Through The Roots Show at Belly Up May 6
Through The Roots (TTR) is a nationally touring San Diego/Hawaii-based pop reggae band.
In 2008, the band got its start in the family room of lead singer Evan Hawkins’ mom’s Rancho Bernardo house. Through thousands of hours of practice, writing and recording, Hawkins’ collaboration with keyboardist Brady O’Rear resulted in the band’s early recordings and first shows playing house parties and college shows around Southern California.
In 2010, the band graduated from backyard parties and began touring heavily, which continued for the next 13+ years to the present day. TTR has played sold out performances across the country’s top venues, including Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Greek Theater, 9:30 Club, First Avenue, and The Roxy. Their performances began to extend even further with shows and festival appearances in Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, Canada, and Guam.
In December 2021, the band headed to Nashville, and six days later returned home to San Diego with their best work to date. Their self-titled album “TTR” dropped in August 2022, and is a groovin’ fusion of pop, rap, reggae and R&B. Band members include Evan Hawkins on vocals (San Diego), Brady ORear on keys (Hawaii), and Calvin Canha on drums (from Maui). Catch these guys at the Belly Up Tavern, in Solana Beach, on May 6. Slightly Stupid and Sublime With Rome at Petco Park
July 16
Slightly Stoopid joins forces with Sublime With Rome on tour for the first time ever. It all traces back to legend Bradley Nowell (Sublime’s original frontman) and Sublime’s early influence on the career of Slightly Stoopid. After initially hearing Miles and Kyle practicing while they were teenagers, Nowell signed them to his indie label imprint Skunk Records while the band members were still in high school. Nowell later produced and released their debut studio album Slightly $toopid in 1996 on Skunk, and appeared on the hidden track “Prophet,” now a staple in the Slightly Stoopid live repertoire nearly 25 years after its original recording. Together these groups became the forerunners of a genre of music and lifestyle movement that will be reflected through the deep catalogs of songs about to be performed across the country.
Since 1995, Slightly Stoopid continues to be a musical brotherhood. Founded by Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald, two musicians determined to succeed on their own terms, the pair of long-time childhood friends, has created a multi-genre fusion of rock, reggae, and blues with hip-hop, funk, American folk, metal, and punk. They remain unwavering in their principles of independence, honoring their diversity of influences and mentors, and furthering their inherited legacy of the Southern California sound. Slightly Stoopid has built a sweeping legacy for itself, continuously expanding in diversity and repertoire. Warriors of the road, their touring has grown exponentially both domestically and internationally with sold-out headlining dates across the world, and festival appearances at famed events such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, New Orleans Jazz Fest, ACL, Outside Lands, and Cali Vibes amongst countless others.
Sublime With Rome, the ska alternative rock group from California, was formed in 2010 by Rome Ramirez and Eric Wilson. With fan-favorite hits such as “Wrong Way,” “Santeria,” “Badfish,” “What I Got,” “Caress Me Down,” “40oz to Freedom,” and many more, the band's concerts are pure sing-along enjoyment from beginning to end. The band released its debut album, Yours Truly, on July 12, 2011, and broke the top ten on the Billboard 200. The band previously toured in support of their hit 2019 album Blessings with singles “Wicked Heart” and “Light On” making a splash at alternative radio. Blessings is the band's third studio album, and it was helmed by Rob Cavallo, the producer behind Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park, and more. Sublime with Rome’s loyal audience can anticipate a new album coming in 2023 as they will return to Sonic Ranch to record their fourth studio album.
“We couldn’t be more excited for the Summertime 2023 tour,” says Miles Doughty. “We haven't toured with Sublime since the early years of Stoopid and we are really excited to be back with our brothers on what we like to call the ultimate summer band camp. We're stoked to debut some new songs and play new venues and cities we haven't hit for a while. And most importantly we can’t wait to be playing music for all of you this summer… between the on-stage collabs and the backstage hangs it’s gonna be insane! The Stoopidheads are what fuels Slightly Stoopid. Should be an epic summer of madness!!!”

Super Girl Surf Pro Returns To Oceanside Pier
JULY 22-24, 8am-6pm
The nationally televised Super Girl Surf Pro is the largest female surfing event in the world and will feature a field of more than 100 top pros. ASA Entertainment’s Super Girl Surf Pro takes place at the Oceanside Pier in Oceanside. Admission to the event is free. The Super Girl
Surf Pro serves as the only major all-women’s WSL qualifying event in North America, and plays a critical role for surfers looking to solidify their position on the 2023 WSL Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT).
“This contest is extremely important in the qualification process for next year’s WCT,” said Jessi MileyDyer, WSL Women’s Tour Manager.
“The event is an amazing combination of the best surfers on the planet with many of the newer faces just beginning their pro journey. That’s just one of the things that makes this all-women’s contest so unique within competitive surfing.”
Some of the world-class surfers that have recently competed in the Super Girl Surf Pro are: Carissa Moore, Caroline Marks, Lakey Peterson, Tatiana Weston-Webb, Malia Manuel, Sage Erickson, Coco Ho, Courtney Conlogue, and Alana Blanchard.
”All of the women are so excited about this event,” said Sage Erickson, one of the world’s top surfers. “It’s so awesome to have a contest like this in the U.S. that focuses entirely on women’s surfing. The whole festival around the event gets bigger each year, and the crowds are huge. It’s amazing to see how many incredible things are going on at the event beyond women’s surfing that all speak to the female empowerment theme. It’s my favorite event of the year!”
In addition to the best surfing in the world, the event features an action-packed Festival Village with 20 live concerts, the only female-driven multi-title esports tournament in the U.S., an all-female DJ contest, a women’s skateboarding competition, fitness and dance classes, yoga, speakers, autographs, hair and beauty styling, a Celebrity Surf Invitational, 40 vendor booths, and many other activities. Check their website for full and up-to-date music lineup.
The event runs daily from July 22 through July 24, from 8am to 6pm. Access to the surfing, concerts, esports, classes and all elements are free to attend. For more information, visit www. SupergirlPro.com. To connect via social media, follow @ SupergirlPro on Instagram and Twitter, or visit Facebook. com/SupergirlPro.

Looking for a New Career? CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate
Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program and immediately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local corporations so they can integrate into the globalized economy. The job application required a TESL/ TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. He received a swift offer and six weeks after earning his TESL/TEFL certificate, Havenor was heading to Dnipro, Ukraine, for a four-
month teaching assignment. “I was thinking I was really retired,” he says. “This program has validated my professional life since being laid off and has given me a sense of contentment that I was missing. It was the bridge that has enabled this new life I am now going to have.”
Designed for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language. The program provides professional development and employment guidance with a strong emphasis on hands-on training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by master teachers with extensive experience in TESL/TEFL,
teacher training, and curriculum development.
Participants receive ample opportunities for developing effective lesson plans and syllabi, practicing classroom management strategies, peer-teaching, and classroom facilitation. The 6-week summer course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week, and the 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week.
For more information on TESL/TEFL Certificate or other English or Cultural program services, visitwww.csusm.edu/ alci or contact us at alci@csusm.edu or (760) 750-3200.
