Moonlight Amphitheatre We’re Giving Away Tickets The Little Mermaid Through August 5 Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human, Prince Eric, in the world above and bargains with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems and Ariel enlists help from her colorful friends Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab, to restore order under the sea. With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture hearts with its irresistible songs. Sunset Boulevard August 16 – September 2 Silent movie star, Norma Desmond, longs for a return to the big screen, having been discarded by tinsel town with the advent of “talkies.” When she meets struggling Hollywood screen-writ-

er Joe Gillis in dramatic circumstances, their subsequent passionate and volatile relationship leads to an unforeseen and tragic conclusion. Based on the film noir classic by Billy Wilder that starred Gloria Swanson and William Holden, Sunset Boulevard has received seven Tony Awards and features some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most soaring melodies, including “With One Look” and “As If We Never Said Goodbye.” In the Heights September 13 – 30 In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles are deciding which traditions to keep

and which to leave behind. From Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the current Broadway hit Hamilton, comes a production that garnered tremendous success at the 2008 Tony Awards, earning accolades for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. Moonlight Amphitheatre is located in Brengle Terrace Park at 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista. For more information call (760) 724-2110 or visit www.moonlightstage.com. Win Free Tickets! It’s easy to enter to win a free pair of tickets. Just visit www.NorthCountySun.com and fill in the simple entry form. Ticket winners agree to be placed on Moonlight’s email update list. Email addresses are not sold or shared with any third party. Promoters are not liable for date or show schedule.

North Coast Repertory Theatre A Midsummer Night’s Dream August 2 – 6 Benjamin Cole directs North Coast Repertory Theatre School students in this entertaining summer performance. Magical fairies with love juice complicate two teen couples’ relationships. A group of silly actors are interrupted when one of them is transformed into a half-man/half-donkey creature with whom the queen of the fairies falls in love. Performances are free and take place at La Colonia Community Center and Park. Tomfoolery August 17 – 27 Tomfoolery is a revue of the witty, wicked and thoroughly twisted world of famed satirical songwriter Tom Lehrer. Four actors, stools, a piano and a healthy dose of attitude are all that is needed to enjoy this delightful performance. Audiences will be beside themselves with the clever lyrics and hummable tunes. Rediscover the man and the songs that have delighted and skewered the world for over forty years in Tomfoolery. Last of the Red Hot Lovers September 6 – October 1 Nobody does Neil Simon like North Coast Rep. Middleaged, overworked Barney Cashman has no experience in

covert maneuvers and is bored with his bland “nice” life. He anxiously tries to join the sexual revolution before it’s too late, and his attempts at seduction will have audiences howling with laughter. Carney Magic September 25 & 26 Comedian, actor and sleight of hand virtuoso John Carney takes the stage in his one-man show, Carney Magic. Honored by Hollywood’s Magic Castle and the Academy of Magical Arts’ prestigious Performing Masters Fellowship, Carney’s engaging wit and dazzling talent have landed him appearances on Jerry Seinfeld’s HBO Special, “The Late Show with David Letterman” and more. This theatrical experience features everything from storytelling, personal accounts and magic. From the silly to the sentimental, Carney Magic expertly weaves likeable characters with magic and mind-blowing slight of hand to deliver a performance that will amaze and delight. North Coast Repertory Theatre is located at 987 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Solana Beach. La Colonia Community Center and Park is located at 715 Valley Avenue, Solana Beach. An American in Paris September 5 – 10 An American in Paris is the new Tony Award-winning musical about an American soldier, a mysterious French girl, and an indomitable European city, each yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war. Acclaimed

director/choreographer Christopher Wheeldon brings the magic and romance of Paris into perfect harmony with unforgettable songs from George and Ira Gershwin in the show that earned more awards than any other musical in 2015. Disney’s The Little Mermaid September 19 – 24 In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories, with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, it’s a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. Fall in love with the magic for the first time—or all over again—with classics such as “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl, “Part of Your World” and more. La Jolla Playhouse Kill Local Through August 27 Sheila and her sister Abigail work for their mother’s small family business. Sheila’s job used to be a source of joy and exhilaration, but now she’s questioning everything. When you’re an assassin, being uninspired means getting sloppy, and getting sloppy means getting killed. Kill Local is a pitch-black comedy about blood ties, revenge and trying to get unstuck – especially when one’s life is dedicated to ending others’. Wild Goose Dreams September 5 – October 1 A North Korean defector who has left her family behind

and a lonely South Korean father start an unlikely online romance as they each attempt to allay their fears and alienation in this inventive, lyrical and darkly humorous piece directed by Tony-nominated and Drama Desk Award-winning Leigh Silverman. San Diego Repertory Theatre Presents: Evita August 3–27 Eva Peron’s ambition and charisma made her a starlet at 22, the President’s mistress at 24, First Lady Eva at 27, and dead at 33. Saint to the working-class, reviled by the aristocracy, and mistrusted by the military, she left a unique and fascinating political legacy in the 20th century. Adored by her people as a champion for the poor, she became one of the most powerful

women in the world. With more than 20 major awards to its credit, Evita tells her unforgettable story and features a Latin rock/jazz/pop score with some of the most beloved songs in musical theatre history, including “On this Night of a Thousand Stars,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.” San Diego Repertory Theatre is located at 79 Horton Plaza, San Diego. For more information call (619) 544-1000 or visit www.sdrep.org.

Pageant of the Masters Through August 31 The Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. Audiences are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (living pictures), incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. A live narrator serves as a guide through the story of each living picture accompanied by the music of a professional orchestra. This year’s theme is “The Grand Tour.” In the 17th and 18th centuries, the desire to experience the world’s great art firsthand inspired

the European tradition of continental travel on the Grand Tour. Inspired to set out on pilgrimages by land and sea to the great cultural centers of Europe, and eventually the globe, those early travelers often risked life and limb to stand in the presence of masterpieces. It is that original dedication to expanding one’s horizons by visiting the great art centers of Europe that fueled Pageant Director Diane Challis Davy’s excitement and research of this summer’s production. The Pageant takes place at the Irvine Bowl, which is located at 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach. For more information call (800) 487-3378 or visit www.pageanttickets.com.

4th Annual Alley Art Festival in Vista September 10, Sunday, 10am–6pm Alley Art Festival is a celebration of unconventional art. On September 10, the festival returns to the streets of downtown Vista for its fourth year. Participants and exhibitors will show their passion for creativity through glass making, graffiti and urban art, steampunk art, tattoos, sculpture and wearable apparel art. The festival also features interactive art, murals, puppetry, poetry, a fashion show, shopping, and dancing. A main stage at the event will host live entertainment into the night. The event is free to the public. The theme of the festival this year is Time Travel. The festival kicks off with a puppet parade that wakes up the morning with giant puppets and merry-making paraders. The festival will feature music performed by local

musicians, food trucks, puppets, an artist/Makers Market, interactive art for the whole family, a poetry slam, a fashion show, a Kidz Art Zone, a Big A$$ Art Show, an art show made out of trash and recycled materials, and more. A key focus of the festival each year is to leave behind new art for all to enjoy year round. Previous years have given the City of Vista murals such as Space Coyote 2014 (behind the Avo) and Hunting Cat 2015 (on Crosiers’ Flowers wall) both created by Vista talent Sarah Spinks. Artists Jaydon Sterling-Randall and Rick Randall of Randall Art Ranch created Alley Art Man 2014, Alley Cat 2015, and Alley Art Woman and Love Locks in Vista both for 2016. This year Randall Art Ranch is creating an interactive Time Machine sculpture. Dining, Sipping, and Drinking everbowl

In a world where inactivity and bad food choices are way too much the norm, everbowl is a place that reminds us to “unevolve” and serves natural food and ingredients that have been around forever. Founded on the idea that the convenience-driven, modern world has an over-evolving effect on humans, everbowl makes eating delicious, healthy, and easy. Serving superfood bowls, smoothies, salads, shots, and sometimes soups, everbowl also has its own oats called Everoats. Bowls are available in 4 different bases: Acai, Acerola, Pitaya and Graviola. All are equally delicious, and have a host of healthy, anti-aging benefits. Everything is non-dairy and no sugar is ever added. Bowls can be ordered as a create-your-own in the form of a WhatEver Bowl, or you can order one from the Local Favorites, where the bowls are a predesigned concoction of healthy deliciousness. The exotic toppings are too many to list; but they are all there for you to either add to your Local Favorite, or mix-and-match into your own perfect Whatever. Proteins can be added for a little extra bulk, although

everbowls are already bulky. Touted as a great meal replacement, everbowls are a full 24-ounces of ingredients, all of which have been around forever. And, no matter what you add to customize your bowl, they are always just $8, a very good value. Salads are $8 and a great dining option. Try a Quinoa-Kale Blast Salad with kale, quinoa, roasted almonds, golden raisins, and pomegranate seeds with a lemon vinaigrette dressing. Absolutely delicious and so healthy! They also serve shots and fruit and vegetable smoothies. Try their 16 oz Vacation Smoothie with acai, blueberry, pineapple, bananas and coconut milk. Bushfire Kitchen

Looking for a special place for happy hour or grabbing a bite before the races? Bushfire is Del Mar’s latest eatery sensation. Now open in Del Mar, in the Beach Side Shopping Center, locals have quickly discovered that this place is a real winner. With 4-5 star ratings on Yelp and Trip Advisor, they specialize in farm fresh food made the old-fashioned way. Everything is made from scratch, using the finest ingredients and cooked with bold flavors. The Zagat review states “Organic, grass-fed BBQ is the name of the game at these popular ‘cue specialists in La Costa and now Del Mar, serving grass-fed hamburgers, antibiotic-free chicken and locally sourced vegetables, alongside scratch-made breads and dressings.” We give Bushfire high ratings for quality, healthy, organic, humanely raised food with bold flavors and affordable prices. Bushfire serves breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner. If you’re a coffee fan, start your morning with a cup of gourmet coffee with beans from Zumbar Coffee of Sorrento Valley, ground fresh daily. Try a frothy steamed espresso latte for only $3.75, with an order of Eggs Benedict or French Toast. For lunch and dinner awaken your taste buds with their tender, slow-braised Angus Beef Brisket or their

Chipotle Short Ribs. Their slow-braise oven cooks meats overnight and ensures the meat falls off the bone. Their 1/2 lb. succulent burgers are made from fresh, never frozen, organic grass-fed beef or lamb. We recommend The Californian that comes with sharp cheddar, local avocado, wild baby arugula, tomato, house-pickled red onions and basil pesto aioli sauce. Dine inside or on their comfortable and exquisitely lit outdoor patio complete with outdoor bar. They have 12 craft beers on tap and a nice wine selection. Everything on the menu is made from scratch and their bread, rolls and buns are baked fresh in-house daily. Side dishes include baked sweet potato, organic brown rice, Himalayan Basmati rice, garlic mashed potatoes, bacon and baked beans and cooked-toorder fries. Try their premium hot sides and cold salads. One of our favorites is their Quinoa, Beet and Wild Arugula Salad. Keeping the earth’s ecology in mind, to-go boxes are made from recycled paper. Del Mar Bushfire Kitchen is located at 2602 Del Mar Heights Rd, Del Mar 92014. Call (858) 461-0946 or visit www.bushfirekitchen.com for their other locations.

Pelly’s Fish Market and Grill

Pelly’s is one of the original fresh fish markets in Coastal North County located just steps from Carlsbad State Beach. Sit under an umbrella on their patio on a summer morning or afternoon. It’s the perfect place for a late breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and the local choice for the freshest fish and people watching. Located in the Poinsettia Village Shopping Center, you’ll enjoy some of the freshest and tastiest char-grilled fish sandwiches, plates, or salads in San Diego. The food is simply amazing and their Fresh Fish Market is always stocked with your favorites, including the local catch. Pelly’s is the number one place to order custom-made seafood platters to suit any size party or family get-together. Select any combination of fish or crustacean from their fresh seafood display including ahi or salmon sashimi, jumbo shrimp, ceviche, stone crab, bay shrimp salad, and more. If you prefer, they will make a “cooked” seafood platter for you, too. Depending on the season, Pelly’s Fish Market offers lobster, large

fillets of fresh ahi, yellowtail, albacore, mahi-mahi, halibut, Atlantic salmon, swordfish, sea bass (perfect for the barbecue), and a wide assortment of local shellfish including oysters, clams and mussels. Pelly’s has an excellent reputation for serving their signature chargrilled entrees. We recommend the mahi-mahi, halibut, and grilled fish tacos. If you’re in the mood for a salad, try their fresh Ono salad, Pelly’s special salad, or their stone crab salad. They have the best chowder, too; so indulge in their famous Manhattan red or Boston white clam chowder. Pelly’s is not a fancy sit-down restaurant; but the quality of their freshly prepared seafood more than makes up for it, and the prices are very reasonable. Check the board for their Catch of the Day. Clip their Free Cup Clam Chowder from our coupon pages or download at http://northcountysun.com/category/coupons. Pelly’s Fish Market is open 7-days a week. They are located in the Poinsettia Village Shopping Center at 7110 Avenida Encinas #101, Carlsbad CA 92011. Bruegger’s Bagels on El Camino Real in La Costa and Scripps Poway Parkway in Poway, offers delicious, piping hot, oven-baked fresh bagels every day of the year. Pick up a dozen bagels with cream cheese and surprise your coworkers or have some neighbors over on the weekends. Try a fresh hot raisin or blueberry bagel or onion bagel with cream cheese, or a Bruegger’s Breakfast Sandwich for the perfect way to start your day. Their classic breakfast sandwiches combine eggs with your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. Our all-time favorite is their classic smoked salmon and cream cheese, stacked high on a fresh onion bagel with sliced tomato, red onions, and capers. In addition to their famous bagels, breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches, Bruegger’s offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. If you are a calorie counter, try one of their Skinny Bagels. Guests can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus varieties “skinny,” due to Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the recipe of

its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Try their Skinny Zesty Egg White Sandwich. This comes with an egg white patty on a skinny sesame bagel, with turkey sausage, Swiss cheese and sun dried tomato spread. Clip their coupon from our Coupon Pages or download from www.NorthCountySun.com/category/coupons and GET A BAGEL W/CREAM CHEESE AND SMALL COFFEE FOR $2.49. Must present coupon. Bruegger’s operates 300 bakeries in North America with 7 bakeries in San Diego. Patron–Tortilleria and Carniceria

We want everyone in San Marcos and nearby communities to know where to find the best authentic Mexican tacos (.99 cents); hot, fresh, handmade daily tortillas (10 for $2.99); made-fresh-daily tamales ($1.89); and Carne Asada combo plates for $6.39. Locals and Mexican-Americans already know how amazing this place is. Try their food and you will be back often. Why go to a supermarket and buy mass-produced tortillas, when you can go to Patron and get freshly made, piping hot tortillas? The best time for hot tortillas is around 4-5pm. Why pay more for tacos when you can get authentic tacos for under a dollar? If you’re staying at the new Marriott Fairfield Inn on San Marcos Blvd; if you are a student at Palomar College or Cal State San Marcos; if you live nearby in San Elijo Hills, or anywhere near San Marcos Blvd. and Twin Oaks Valley Rd. (near the San Marcos Post Office or San Marcos Civic Center); if you just love authentic, fresh Mexican food, you’ll love Patron. If you are craving real Mexican food, why not eat and shop where Mexican people go! They have an assortment of Agua

Frescas, which are fresh fruit-infused water drinks, including horchata (a cinnamon and rice drink); guacamole and salsa made fresh daily; Mexican cheeses and canned goods; fresh fruits and vegetables, including locally-grown tomatoes, avocados, lemons and papayas; and a great butcher shop with chicken, steak, goat, pork, and beef. Buy your carne asada here! Every morning, Patron customers pick up delicious, hot tamales, and hot, hand-made tortillas. They have different kinds of tamales, including: cheese and pepper (a little spicy); shredded beef; shredded pork; and chicken. For your taco meat, we recommend Birria, a flavorful beef or goat stewed meat. Top off your taco with red or green salsa, Mexican avocado sauce, cheese, onions, and fresh sliced lime. They sell out of tamales and tortillas every day; so get there early! Clip their .99 cent Taco Coupon (good every day!) from our coupon pages or download from http://northcountysun.com/category/ coupons/. Patron is located at 204 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos 92078. YES with Carl Palmer at the Balboa Theatre 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees YES are bringing their summer tour YESTIVAL across the U.S. and to the Balboa Theatre, San Diego, on August 8. The show will feature special guest Carl Palmer who is honoring the magic of Keith Emerson and Greg Lake. This summer’s annual trek will feature a set list of greatest hits from all of the band’s studio albums up to 1980, showcasing the storied history of one of the world’s most influential, ground-breaking, and respected progressive rock bands. YES—Steve Howe (guitar since 1970), Alan White (drums since 1972), Geoff Downes (keyboards; first joined in 1980), Jon Davison (vocals since 2011) and Billy Sherwood (guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and the late Chris Squire’s choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015s)— will treat fans to such hits as “Roundabout” and “Starship Trooper,” performing one song from each of the band’s

first 10 albums starting with 1969’s Yes to 1980’s Drama. “I think the presentation will be an interesting one because we’re going to play the songs chronologically,” Howe recently revealed to Guitar World (August 2017 issue). “It’ll allow our fans to really get a sense of our development and how our music evolved album to album during the course of 12 years. In an hour and a half, you’ll get a nice picture of that period.” The Balboa Theatre is located at 868 Fourth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets can be purchased at www.sandiegotheatres.org. office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.

Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise”. These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of their own listings, with no other agent involved . . . .and because of this, they will lower the total listing commission from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings! This is easily verified by an MLS printout of SOLD listings that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in all the sales. Are they the same offices? . . . probably not. Advisory #4: Beware of a lower than normal commission posted in the MLS to “buyer’s broker”. While commissions are negotiable, money motivates sales people. Buyer’s agents typically expect a minimum of 2.5% for selling a median priced home . . . and they deserve it! If

less than 2.5% is proposed by your listing agent, ask them for an MLS printout of the listings for your neighborhood that will clearly show the commissions paid to other buyer brokers. Rarely will you see less than 2.5%. You want maximum agent motivation to sell your home by offering at least 2.5% to the buyer’s broker. This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, owner and broker of Boe Real Estate; sharing 30-years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes. David Boe personally handles all the negotiations and required paperwork. David Boe has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates to buyers. Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her English-speaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge!) The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator person opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the

Home Sellers Advisory Advisory #1: Beware of the “High Price” listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a signed listing contract by presenting an unrealistic high list price, and knowing that the seller will eventually have to lower the list price to sell their home. Two clever responses can help sellers mitigate this scenario. Advisory #2: Beware of the “Universal Phone Call” that goes something like this; “Hello, I have a buyer interested in buying your home, are you interested in selling?” Truth is very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer. If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is only if that specific buyer buys your home.

VAVi Sport & Social New to North County VAVi Sport & Social is a force to be reckoned with in San Diego, and has recently expanded its adult sports leagues into North County due to increased demand. Leagues are currently running in Escondido featuring Bowling, Kickball, and Soccer – with more to come in the following months. The North County expansion has been fueled by VAVi’s Corporate Wellness program, which provides a platform for companies to promote health and fitness, teambuilding, communication, work-life balance and FUN through coed adult sports leagues, events, and custom corporate events. ViaSat Inc., in Carlsbad, promotes health, fitness and fun by providing registrations for employees to participate in the Del Mar Mud Run for their second year in a row. To show their workplace solidarity among the 4,500 Mud Run participants, ViaSat had their logo screened on the backs of shirts of participating employees–who may never cross paths during their typical work day. VAVi’s sports leagues include up to 8 regular season games, playoffs for top teams and champ prizes, sponsor hookups, and professional referees. VAVi is the best way to stay active, meet new people, and have fun! As VAVi moves more into the North County area, hundreds of companies

along the 78 Corridor await their chance to get their employees out on the field after work. The initial Bowling and Kickball leagues in the Escondido area along with support and participation from the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation is fanning the flames of excitement with the idea of providing coed adult sports leagues to the employees of San Marcos, Oceanside, Vista and Carlsbad in the near future. Currently these employees travel to areas like Sorrento Valley, La Jolla and Del Mar to enjoy these employee perks but will have a chance to stay in the area as VAVi expands to meet their demands. VAVi continues to provide custom corporate events to companies interested in getting their employees out of the office for a day to recharge, celebrate, and form even closer bonds with their co-workers.
