Moonlight Amphitheatre We’re Giving Away Tickets! Disney’s Newsies August 1-4 Newsies is a high-energy explosion of song and dance based on the thrilling true story of the Newsboy strike in 1899, when a bunch of rag tag orphans took on Joe Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, nearly bringing down the city of New York. The musical features many of the beloved songs from the original 1992 movie and also introduces eight new songs. The Hunchback of Notre Dame August 15-September 1 From the Oscar-winning team of Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz comes the retelling of Victor Hugo’s epic story of love, acceptance, and what it means to be a hero. The story follows deformed bell ringer Quasimodo and his adventures during the annual revels of the Feast of Fools, where he is treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. She alone sees the beauty beneath his exterior, and her kindness lays the foundation for a redeeming friendship that brings its own rewards.

New Village Arts Theatre Legally Blonde: The Musical August 1–September 9 Based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde: The Musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances, this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal. Guadalupe in the Guest Room September 28–October 28 Guadalupe in the Guest Room tells the story of two people with nothing in common but a shared grief, who bond in the most unexpected ways. Written by the rising playwright Tony Meneses, the play is a deeply moving and funny celebration of life, new beginnings, and the healing power of telenovelas. New Village Arts Theatre is located at 2787 State Street, Carlsbad. For more information, visit www.newvillagearts.org.

La Jolla Playhouse Seize the King August 21–September 16 Will Power returns to Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre in a fiveperson, full-throttle reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s Richard III. With England’s throne empty, Richard knocks down threats to his rule, fueling his insatiable ambition and paranoia. Hundred Days September 22–October 21 Hundred Days is an exhilarating and heartrending autobiographical piece, written and performed by the husband-and-wife team Abigail and Shaun Bengson. Their story is about embracing uncertainty, taking a leap, and loving as if you only had 100 days to live. With their magnetic chemistry and unique musical style, the Bengsons explore the fundamental question of how to make the most of the time you have. This production takes place at Mandell Weiss Forum. La Jolla Playhouse is located at 2910 La Jolla Village Drive, La Jolla. For more information, visit www. lajollaplayhouse.org.

Chicago September 12-29 Making its long-awaited Moonlight debut, Chicago has everything that makes Broadway great: knockout dancing, a rippedfrom-the-headlines story about fame and scandal, and one show-stopping song after another. Winner of six Tony Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations worldwide, Chicago is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. The story of fame, fortune, and acquittal features sizzling lyrics by Fred Ebb and a dazzling score by John Kander, which sparked the original immortal staging by Bob Fosse. Beauty and the Beast—Youth Theatre October 12-20 Moonlight’s Youth Theatre Production offers programs designed for youth from ages 7 to 18 years of age of various skill levels who are interested in all areas of theatrical performance, as well as those who wish to remain “behind the scenes.” MYT’s educational opportunities are staffed by professional actors, directors, choreographers, musical directors and other theatre professionals.

Super Diamond October 27, 7:30pm In tribute to the much-loved Neil Diamond, Super Diamond performs the international pop icon’s timeless classics, including “Sweet Caroline,” “America,” and “Cracklin’ Rosie.” With a nod from Neil Diamond himself, old and new fans have embraced Super Diamond across America. San Diego Civic Theatre Dan and Phil World Tour: Interactive Introverts August 8, 7:30pm Two insecure nerds stand under the spotlight to give the people what they want: an epic interactive experience of rants, roasts, battles, stories and surprises that put the audience in control unlike anything before. Daniel Howell and Phil Lester are two of the world’s biggest YouTube stars. From producing their own comedy videos, they have gone on to present a Radio Academy Award-winning show for BBC Radio 1, host international coverage of the BRIT Awards, and release a hit board game and an app game which reached #1 on the iTunes store. They proudly support charitable organizations such as Young Minds, Stand Up To Cancer and the British Red Cross. North Coast Repertory Theatre A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum July 11–August 19 A smart, hysterically comical revival of a hit Broadway laugh-a-minute show, this musical will bring sheer joy and infectious high spirits with classic songs like “Comedy Tonight,” “Lovely,” and “Everybody Ought to Have A Maid.” Blithe Spirit September 5–30 The beloved smash hit of the London and Broadway stages conjures its way to North Coast Rep for a spirited and hilarious evening. A socialite novelist, an eccentric medium, • sol a na bea ch, ca l i forni a •

an unforgiving ex-wife and a shrewish spouse create supernatural hijinks in this comedy. Tuesday Night Comics September 25 Tuesday Night Comics is arguably the funniest night of comedy in San Diego. Host Mark Christopher Lawrence taps into his extensive list of talented comedian friends and shares the stage with them. The show is comprised of talent from all over the country with late-night television credits, as well as Comedy Central, HBO and Showtime. Star Theatre Company Presents: Guys and Dolls September 21–30 Based on “The Idyll of Sarah Brown” and characters by Damon Runyon, Guys and Dolls is set in the hustle and bustle of prohibition era New York City. It soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces a cast of vivid characters including: Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight “mission doll” out to reform the evildoers of Time Square; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos Sarah on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she has been engaged to the same

man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiancé who is desperate to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game. The iconic score by Frank Loesser includes such songs as “Luck Be a Lady,” “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat,” “If I Were a Bell,” and “A Bushel and a Peck.” Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, Guys and Dolls is considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy. Patio Playhouse Presents: In the Heights August 17–September 1 In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood. It’s a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. A community is on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, and where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions to keep, and which ones to leave behind. In the Heights is the winner of the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. Performances take place at Kit Carson Amphitheater, which is located at 100 Amphitheater Drive, Escondido. For more information, call (760) 746-6669 or visit www. patioplayhouse.com.

San Diego Repertory Theatre Presents: Fun Home September 6–30 The musical Fun Home is based on Allison Bechdel’s witty and wistful graphic novel of the same name. Past and present blend magically as Alison is portrayed at three different ages—as a young girl playing games in the family’s funeral home, as a college student joyously discovering her sexuality as a lesbian woman and as an adult on a quest to discover the truth about her extraordinary father’s secret life. Fun Home was the most acclaimed musical of 2015, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score. Performances take place at Lyceum Theatre, which is located at 79 Horton Plaza, San Diego. For more information call (619) 544-1000 or visit www.sdrep.org.

San Diego Civic Youth Ballet Presents: Fairy Tales in the Park August 18–19 For the past decade the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet has brought classic fairy tales to life with Fairytales in the Park, on Balboa Park’s Casa del Prado Theatre stage. Directed by Danika Pramik-Holdaway, Fairytales in the Park is a whimsical, interactive dance performance that merges the beauty of ballet with the excitement of unforgettable stories. It is narrated by a professional storyteller and is perfect for families and audiences of all ages. Casa del Prado Theatre is located at 1600 Village Place, San Diego. For more information, visit www.sdcyb.org.

Mira Costa College Theatre Presents: Hay Fever September 27–October 6 Retired stage star Judith Bliss, her novelist husband and their two bohemian adult children have each invited house guests for the weekend. As the Blisses indulge their artistic eccentricities in a hilarious whirlwind of flirtation and histrionics, the guests begin to wonder if they’ve landed in a madhouse and if they can survive with their own wits intact. Set in a 1920s English country house, Noël Coward’s comedy of bad manners is a favorite amongst theatregoers. The preview night is on September 27 and performances continue through October 6. Children under the age of 5 are not admitted to the theatre. Mira Costa College is located at 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside. For more information, visit www.miracosta.edu/buytix.

San Diego Musical Theatre Hairspray August 3–September 2 It’s 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland, and quirky, plus-sized teenager Tracy Turnblad has one dream: to dance on The Corny Collins Show. When she gets put in detention with the African-American students in the school, they teach her some of their dance moves, and her newfound groove wins her a spot on Corny’s show. Overnight, Tracy transforms into a star and uses her influence to advocate for racial integration on the television show. Audiences will be tapping their feet to the beat as Tracy and friends triumph over high school bullies, racism and enemies of big girls with big hair.

Young Frankenstein September 28–October 28 From the mind of Mel Brooks comes Young Frankenstein, a monster musical based on the original classic comedy film masterpiece. This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the legend of Frankenstein is the story of the bright young doctor Frankenstein who travels to Transylvania to complete the masterwork of his grandfather by bringing a corpse to life. Young Frankenstein is a scientifically proven, monstrously good time at the theatre. Performances take place at Horton Grand Theatre, which is located at 444 Fourth Ave., San Diego. For more information call (877) 778-1258 or visit www.sdmt.org.

The Old Globe Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax August 1–12 Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax has been enchanting adults and children alike for generations. Silky soft Truffula trees provide the perfect ingredient for a nifty new garment, but when demand skyrockets, the Lorax must speak for all the trees in the Truffula forest. Audiences of all ages are thrilled by the brilliant, eyepopping colors, infectious music, and beloved story of Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax. Barefoot in the Park August 1–September 2 Fresh off a honeymoon at the Plaza Hotel, free-spirited Corie and her buttoned-down husband Paul find themselves struggling to adjust to married life in their run-down New

York walk-up. Throw in a loopy meddling mother, an eccentric Bohemian upstairs neighbor, and a double date that goes disastrously wrong, and it’s the perfect recipe for laughter. Much Ado About Nothing August 12–September 16 Everyone can see that confirmed bachelor Benedick and headstrong Beatrice are meant for each other—except for Benedick and Beatrice themselves. Cruisin’ Grand Escondido— One of the Biggest Cruise Nights in U.S. August 3–September 28, 5–9pm On Friday nights through September, a spectacular array of classic cars line the streets downtown for Cruisin’ Grand Escondido. Attendees can see hotrods cruise and park, and may even encounter a famous TV star, celebrity, or musician, as Eric Clapton has been known to attend the event in past years. In addition to classic cars, attendees can also enjoy all that downtown Escondido has to offer, including great restaurants, stores, boutiques, breweries, pubs, and live performance venues. It’s widely known that Cruisin’ Grand was Steve Waldron’s idea. Steve used to cruise Valley Parkway on Friday and Saturday nights in the ‘70s. He’d go to the T-Bird Diner and think what a shame it was that the hot rods were parked instead of cruising. He started to think that “Grand Avenue was an exceptional street to have a cruise on, a street with great ambiance.” The City and Escondido Police Department quickly got on board and their support has been crucial to the success of Cruisin’ Grand. Cruisin’ Grand takes place on Grand Ave. from Orange Street to Ivy Street in downtown Escondido. For more information, visit www.cruisingrand.com.

Dining, Sipping, and Drinking The Hidden Grill

You may or may not have seen their new sign driving eastbound on San Marcos Boulevard along Restaurant Row. It’s almost impossible to see The Hidden Grill restaurant because it’s, well, hidden from view from the street. Under the auspices of 30-year Executive Chef, Yamac, this mysterious Shangri-la indoor/outdoor open patio Mediterranean grill serves some of the best BBQ and smoked meats and cuisine anywhere. The Hidden Grill is family created, family run and loved, and serves and cares for its customers like family. Try their brick oven wood-fired Pide (long pizza), or their seriously long 24-inch BBQ skewered (beef, lamb, chicken, Kofta, meatball, or vegetable) kebobs. You may never have seen anything like these! They also have cheeseburgers with thickly

layered cheddar cheese (browned and crispy), that will make your taste buds go wild. Other delectable menu items include Breaded Portobelo Mushrooms, Garlic Shrimp, Appetizers and Salads, and a Smoked Meat Platter that includes a generous portion of smoked chicken, shrimp, tri-tip and pork belly served with pickled onion and herb cheese. Born from a successful San Diego-based food truck and event catering business, Chef Yamac is excited to open this new restaurant and grill in the heart of Restaurant Row and invites foodies and neighbors to visit, hang out, drink, and enjoy something truly special. Stop by for Happy Hour 4-7 Tuesday thru Thursday. They are located at 925 West San Marcos Blvd, #103, San Marcos 92078. Call (760) 736-4400 or visit www.thehiddengrill.com.

It’s hot this summer and there’s nothing better than an ice-cold refreshing Cyder! Newtopia Cyder of Scripps Ranch has just opened their newest Cyder House and Tasting Room at Block C in North City, within walking distance from CSUSM campus. This fun, sophisticated, and whimsical tasting room serves artfully created Modern Seasonal Cyders and Old World Spirit and Wine Barrell Aged Cyders. Some must-try popular Cyders are: “Chi Me River” is a San Diego Cyder made with a decaffeinated blend of Chai, Chamomile, and Chrysanthemum. The Chai and Chamomile relaxes the body, and the Chrysanthemum acts as a natural body coolant that cools down your

Rosati’s Pizza

If you’re from Chicago or the mid-west, then you most likely know about Rosati’s Pizza. This delicious Chicago-style deep dish Italian pizza of Ferdinand Rosati was born when he opened his restaurant on Taylor Street in Chicago in 1906, a hundred and eleven years ago. Back then, the pizza was old-world with tomato sauce served on crispy bread. In 1927 Ferdinand’s son, Saverio, opened a Rosati’s on Pulaski Street. Skip ahead to 1964. That was when Saverio’s sons took over, proceeded to opened ten locations, and now has close to 200 restaurants nationwide. Authentic Chicago-style deep-dish pizza has two main ingredients: Italian tomato sauce and Mozzarella cheese. This delicious combo is baked inside a deep-dish crust. You can order yours this authentic way; or you can add an assortment of toppings. It’s important to point out that other deep-dish pizzas have a doughy, thick crust. Rosati’s deepdish crust is not doughy, but actually light and crispy; and so is the bottom crust of their pizza. It’s amazing! We don’t know how they do this; but it’s a special craft to make deep-dish with a crispy crust. Their deep-dish pizza is mouth watering with mounds of gooey Mozzarella

and topped with Pomodoro tomatoes. It’s something you must add to your bucket list. One word of caution: it takes about 30-45 minutes to bake this pie perfectly; so please plan accordingly. They also serve Chicago-style thin crust pizza, as well as gluten-free thin crust pizza! Rosati’s offers build-your-own pasta, specialty pastas, calzone, salads, and desserts. Their pizza is world-famous and so are their signature sandwiches; e.g., try their signature Combo Sausage and Beef. It’s the real deal! They have over 30 local craft beer taps. Happy Hour is very lively Monday through Friday from 3-7pm with beer and wine specials and 1/2 off appetizers. They have Live Music Tuesday nights and Open Mics on Wednesday nights. Bring the family and friends and enjoy a real Chicago-style meal indoors; or, on a warm summer night, dine on their spacious patio. Clip a BOGO Pizza 1/2 Off Coupon from our coupon pages or download from http://northcountysun.com/category/coupons/. Not valid with other offers or specials. Must present coupon. Rosati’s Pizza is located at 337 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas 92024. They offer local delivery and catering. Call ahead (760) 452-2007.

We love Daily News Café! Serving the community since 1990, the Daily News Café is celebrating their 28th anniversary in downtown Carlsbad Village. Enjoy an American classic breakfast or an ice-cold craft beer with a delicious sandwich and salad for lunch. This historic Carlsbad restaurant is a North County dining destination. Many of their staff and cooks have been working there for years and have become local celebrities. Waitress Deena Vongxay has been serving happy customers for 27 years. The longevity of the staff, as well as the great food and service, are the reasons for the popularity of this downtown village bistro. Guests enjoy homemade comfort breakfasts and lunches, inside or outside on the beautiful patio, while people-watching and taking in the sunshine and fresh ocean air. Three to four times a year, retired Marine officers who flew A-4 Skyhawks, during the Vietnam war (and after), gather to meet at their favorite breakfast place in Carlsbad. These Marine Vets have been coming from near and far to meet at the Daily News Café for the past ten years.

On a hot summer day try their fresh-made-daily Aguas Frescas! Aguas Frescas is getting really popular in Southern California. Aguas Frescas is fresh squeezed and blended fresh fruit mixed with water and ice. Patron serves very large 32 oz. cups for only $2.99. It’s a large serving, and an amazing deal. It comes in many delicious fresh fruit combinations, like pineapple and orange, watermelon, papaya, and kiwi. Our favorite has all kinds of mixed fruit in it, including apples. You’ll see lots of freshly chopped fruit chunks mixed with blended juice. It’s really delicious. Locals go to Patron and pick up freshly made, piping hot tortillas every day around 4-6pm. Why buy department store tortillas when you can get fresh, hot tortillas? And, why pay more for tacos when you can get authentic street tacos (custom made) for under a dollar?

All tacos are made to order! If you’re staying at the new Marriott Fairfield Inn on San Marcos Blvd, or if you’re a student at Palomar College or CSUSM, or if you live in San Elijo Hills or nearby, and you want authentic Mexican food, try eating and shopping where Mexican-Americans go! They have an assortment of guacamole and salsa that is made fresh daily; Mexican cheeses and canned goods; fresh fruits and vegetables, including locally-grown tomatoes, avocados, lemons and papayas; and their own butcher shop, with chicken, beef, goat, and pork. This is the place to buy Carne Asada. Every morning, Patron customers pick up delicious, hot tamales. Patron custom-makes tacos. For your taco meat, try chicken, carne asada, or try birria; a flavorful beef or goat stewed meat. Top off your taco with red or green salsa, Mexican avocado sauce, cheese, onions, beans, rice, and fresh sliced lime. They often sell-out of tamales and tortillas; so get there early! Patron is located at 204 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos 92078. Call (760) 736-0086.

Home Sellers Advisory

August 5, 9am–2pm

Advisory #1: Beware of the “High Price” listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a signed listing contract by presenting an unrealistic high list price, and knowing that the seller will eventually have to lower the list price to sell their home. Two clever responses can help sellers mitigate this scenario. Advisory #2: Beware of the “Universal Phone Call” that goes something like this; “Hello, I have a buyer interested in buying your home, are you interested in selling?” Truth is very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer. If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is only if that specific buyer buys your home. Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise”. These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of their own listings, with no other agent involved . . . and because of this, they will lower the total listing commission from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings! This is easily verified by an MLS printout of SOLD listings that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in all the sales. Are they the same offices? . . . probably not. Advisory #4: Beware of a lower than normal commission posted in the MLS to “buyer’s broker”. While commissions are negotiable, money motivates sales people. Buyer’s agents typically expect a minimum of 2.5% for selling a median priced home . . . and they deserve it! If less than 2.5% is proposed by your listing agent, ask them for an MLS printout of the listings for your neighborhood that will clearly show the commissions paid to other buyer brokers. Rarely will you see less than 2.5%. You want maximum agent motivation to sell your home by offering at least 2.5% to the buyer’s broker. This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, owner and broker of Boe Real Estate; sharing 30-years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes. David Boe personally handles all the negotiations and required paperwork. David Boe has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates to buyers. Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her Englishspeaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge!) The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator person opened the elevator door and

used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 2702165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.

With stunning panoramic ocean views, The Crossings at Carlsbad opened in 2007 and still remains one of the priciest municipal golf courses ever built with a price tag over 70 million. Built on a hilly terrain with gorges and multiple bridge crossings, hence the name “Crossings,” this18-hole championship municipal golf course and event facility offers visitors a magnificent setting in a relaxed California Coastal environment. The course’s five bridges–or crossings–were designed to meet existing environmental and topographic conditions. The Crossings at Carlsbad is nestled in the natural habitat and wildlife on more than 400 acres of Carlsbad’s coastal terrain. This is not a beginner’s par-3, but a challenging and very fun 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Greg Nash. Start your day at the driving range and putting green. The clubhouse is completely equipped with a starters desk, apparel and golf equipment boutique, and has an adjoining bar with HD TVs, a gorgeous outdoor patio with golf course and ocean views, and an absolutely exquisite restaurant called, appropriately, The Canyons. The

Canyons offers a Sunday brunch with carving and serving stations, and a very lively happy hour, with excellent food specials, $5 well drinks, drafts, and wine, and happens Monday – Friday from 3 to 6pm. Friday evenings enjoy live music from 5-7pm. For more info call (760) 444-1888 or visit www.thecrossingsatcarlsbad.com.

After 20 Years CSUSM Athletics Celebrates in a Big Way It’s a twist on an old question, but the answer is clear at Cal State University San Marcos: If life gives you a chicken ranch, make an athletic program and watch it soar. From those humble beginnings, to earning National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II status in 2017, the school is now celebrating the 20th anniversary of CSUSM Athletics. CSUSM opened its doors in 1990 but it wasn’t until 1998 that the Cougars started keeping score in six sports: men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams. In 2006, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s soccer were added, while men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball began competing in 2010, raising Cougar blue squads to 13. From 1998–2015, the CSUSM Dept. of Athletics was affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), where they had three national championships (women’s cross country, 2009-11), three individual national championships and 208 All-America selections.

The hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, staff and community facilitated what came next for CSUSM Athletics. The department was granted full membership to the NCAA Division II and admission into the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), which has been the nation’s most successful Division II conference since its establishment in December 1938. Twelve of the CCAA’s 13 members are in the California State University system; the only non-CSU school is UC San Diego. “We have put CSUSM on the national stage in our first year of eligibility,” Director of Athletics Jennifer Milo said. “For years, our student-athletes have been successful in the classroom, on the playing field and in the community while our coaches have been leaders in their fields. It’s through their efforts and the continued support of our community that we are able to keep excelling in all areas and build off of the solid foundation that was started 20 years ago.” For more information and tickets, please visit www. CSUSMCougars.com.

Timed runners are eligible for awards. This year’s event has a fundraising goal of $30,000. The Lung Cancer Research Foundation’s (LCRF) Free to Breathe Events Program funds research for the pre-

vention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of lung cancer. LCRF has funded 348 grants, totaling $31 million – the largest amount of funding provided by any lung cancer research organization to date. There is no registration fee for walkers or untimed runners; online registration for timed runners is $35. All participants who raise $100 earn an official event t-shirt. SEPTEMBER 5–30, 2018 Directed By Rosina Reynolds
