Looking for a New Career? CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate In December 2015, Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a AMERICAN LANGUAGE & CULTURE INSTITUTE new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program in May 2017 and immediately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local corporations so they can integrate into the globalized economy. The job application required a TESL/TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. He received a swift offer and six N O R T H

weeks after earning his TESL/TEFL certificate, Havenor was heading to Dnipro, Ukraine, for a four-month teaching assignment. “I was thinking I was really retired,” he says. “This program has validated my professional life since being laid off and has given me a sense of contentment that I was missing. It was the bridge that has enabled this new life I am now going to have.” Designed for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language. The program provides professional development and employment guidance with a strong emphasis on hands-on training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by

master teachers with extensive experience in TESL/TEFL, teacher training, and curriculum development. Participants receive ample opportunities for developing effective lesson plans and syllabi, practicing classroom management strategies, peer-teaching, and classroom facilitation. The 6-week summer course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week, and the 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week. For more information, visit www.csusm.edu/alci or email at alci@csusm.edu or (760) 750-3200.

California Center for the Arts, Escondido Center Stage Performances for Youth: Dancing Through the Pages February 13 Performed by Mojalet Dance Collective, Dancing Through the Pages uses literature and language as an inspiration for dance. Inspired by concepts from “School House Rock,” stories, poems, picture books and novels, this program showcases creative movement designed to educate and entertain. The Clairvoyants March 1, 7:30pm Thommy Ten and Amélie van Tass, both born and raised in Austria, met in October 2011 and began to develop their “second sight” act. Within a year they had developed a fulllength show. After a six-month run of their show on the Norwegian Getaway cruise ship, they were offered a featured spot in the largest touring magic show in the world, “The Illusionists,” produced by Simon Painter. They have also performed on “America’s Got Talent,” Broadway and at the Sydney Opera House. Van Tass and Ten were named “Stage Magicians of the Year 2016,” “German Champions of Mentalism,” “Magicians of the Year 2015,” and the

2015 “World Champions of Mentalism,” a prize that has not been awarded in 30 years. The competition features astounding works of art in sugar, classes by world-renowned cake artists, shopping from the industry’s top vendors and free stage demonstrations for all ages. The theme of this year’s show is “Red Carpet Cakes.” The show is entirely run by volunteers. The San Diego Cake Club has donated thousands of dollars to the Ronald McDonald House Charities over the years. Last year alone, the 501(c)3 non-profit organization donated $15,000. The Ronald McDonald House Charities provide a “home away from home” for families with children being treated for serious and often life-threating conditions at local hospitals. San Diego Civic Theatre SD Opera presents: Rigoletto February 2, 5, 8 and 10 The lecherous Duke of Mantua seduces wives and daughters while his hunchbacked Jester, Rigoletto, adds insult to injury by ridiculing their husbands and fathers. The curse comes to life as the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s young, innocent daughter and Rigoletto plots an attempt to assassinate him, with unbelievably disastrous results. Fast-paced and powerful, the production by Verdi focuses on the cruel realities of a society controlled by a corrupt ruling class. A traditional Italian classic, Rigoletto is sung in Italian with projected English translations. The next notch on her belt is the naïve soldier Don Jose, who is bewitched by her passion and sacrifices everything to be with her. In her true heartless fashion, Carmen becomes bored and drops her lover when her path collides with the macho bullfighting Escamillo. This archetype of literature and art burns up the stage with unbridled drama and passionate music, including the “Toreador Song” and seductive “Habanera.” Set in classic Spain, this traditional production has all of the lust, jealousy, revenge, and heart-stopping drama expected from Bizet. The production is sung in French, with projected English translations. San Diego Civic Theatre is located at 1100 Third Ave., San Diego. Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100– $1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her Englishspeaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge). The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator attendant opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.

Whether you are a Carlsbad Village local, or someone visiting for the first time, you’ll understand why the Daily News Café is one of our all time favorites! This historic restaurant is a North County destination and has been serving the community since 1990. This March, they are celebrating their 29th anniversary in downtown Carlsbad Village. Enjoy an American classic breakfast or an ice-cold craft beer with a delicious sandwich and salad for lunch. Many of their staff and cooks have been working there for years and have become local celebrities. Waitress Deena Vongxay has been serving happy customers for 27 years. The longevity of the staff, as well as the great food and service, are the reasons for the popularity of this downtown village bistro. Enjoy homemade comfort breakfasts and lunches, inside or outside on the beautiful patio and taking in the sunshine and fresh ocean air. Four times a year, retired Marine officers who flew A-4 Skyhawks, during the Vietnam war (and after), gather to meet at their favorite breakfast place in Carlsbad. These Marine Vets come from near and far to meet at the Daily News Café.

We have never been in a sushi restaurant where you get your order so quickly. Every day, Ahi Sushi and Grill offers 50% off cut rolls, special rolls, and sushi; and 50% off items are highlighted on their sushi menu. They also have lunch and dinner specials, sake bombs, and beers for Happy Hour. “You say sake, we say bomb!” Sake Bombs during Happy Hour are

Rosati’s Pizza

With over 30 local craft beers on tap, happy hour at Rosati’s is very lively Monday through Friday from 3-7pm. They also have Live Music every Tuesday night. Bring the family and friends and enjoy a real Chicago-style meal indoors, or dine on their spacious patio. Make your Valentine’s reservations now! If you are a pizza lover or are from Chicago or the mid-west, then you most likely know about Rosati’s Pizza. Their delicious, cheese dripping Chicago-style deep dish Italian pizza created by Ferdinand Rosati was originated when he opened his first restaurant on Taylor Street in Chicago in 1906, a hundred and twelve years ago. Back then, the pizza was old-world with tomato sauce served on crispy bread. In 1927 Ferdinand’s son, Saverio, opened a Rosati’s on Pulaski Street. Skip ahead to 1964 when Saverio’s sons took over and proceeded to open ten locations, and now have 200 restaurants nationwide. Authentic Chicago-style deep-dish pizza has two main ingredients:

Italian tomato sauce and Mozzarella cheese. This delicious combo is baked inside a deep-dish crust. You can order yours this authentic way; or you can add an assortment of toppings. Rosati’s deep-dish crust is light and crispy. We don’t know how they do this; but it’s a special craft to make deep-dish with a crispy crust. Their deep-dish pizza is mouth watering with mounds of gooey Mozzarella and topped with Pomodoro tomatoes. It’s something you must add to your bucket list. Caution: It takes about 30-45 minutes to bake this pie perfectly. They also serve Chicago-style thin crust pizza, as well as gluten-free thin crust pizza! Rosati’s offers build-your-own pasta, specialty pastas, calzone, salads, and desserts. Clip a BOGO Pizza 1/2 Off Coupon from our coupon pages or download from http://northcountysun.com/category/coupons/. Not valid with other offers or specials. Must present coupon. Rosati’s Pizza is located at 337 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas 92024. They offer local delivery and catering. Call ahead 760-452-2007.

Come early for a breakfast burrito, menudo (served Saturday and Sunday), or their huevos rancheros or chorizo, eggs and cheese plates. If you crave delicious Mexican tamales, this is the place! They serve tamales year-round and these tasty delights are served hot every morning, but sell out fast. We love Patron and the owners and staff at Patron. We want everyone in San Marcos and nearby communities to know where to find the best authentic Mexican freshmade-daily tamales ($1.89); tacos (.99 cents with coupon); hot, fresh, handmade daily tortillas (10 for $2.99); and Carne Asada combo plates for $6.39. Thinking about having a big birthday party or family celebration? Have Patron cater your event! Locals and Mexican-Americans already know how amazing this place is. Try their authentic Mexican food and you will be back often. Why go to a supermarket and buy mass-produced tortillas, when you can go to Patron and get freshly made, piping hot tortillas? The best time for hot tortillas is around 4-5pm. Why pay more for tacos when you can get authentic tacos for under a dollar? All tacos are made to order!

Eat and shop where local Mexican-Americans go! They have an assortment of Agua Frescas $2.99 for a 32 oz. drink. Enjoy Agua Frescas; guacamole and salsa made fresh daily; Mexican cheeses and canned goods; fresh fruits and vegetables, including locally-grown tomatoes, avocados, lemons and papayas; and butcher shop with chicken, steak, goat, pork, and beef. Buy your carne asada here! In the afternoon pick up piping hot, hand-made tortillas. Have Patron custom make your tacos. For your taco meat, we recommend Birria, a flavorful beef or goat stewed meat, or their Chicken mole. Tony’s Jacal

Tony’s Jacal is one of the most wonderful places to be on Valentine’s Day. It’s sure to be lively, especially the bar, so get there early to avoid waiting for a table. Tony’s is one of the most famous and historic Mexican restaurants and cantinas in San Diego. You never know who you might see there; including celebrities, horse owners, and jockeys. According to Zagat, “Tony’s Jacal is one of the most authentic north of the border Mexican restaurants.” Taste the flavors of old Mexico and enjoy the history of one of the first Mexican restaurants in San Diego. Tony’s Jacal (pronounced hakal) is one of San Diego’s oldest and most treasured Mexican restaurants. Located in Solana Beach, Tony’s Jacal is a historic San Diego landmark which opened its doors in 1946 as a small neighborhood house where neighbors would stop by for a delicious meal. Its reputation increased over the years because their cuisine is absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere and service are equally outstanding. For three generations, Tony’s Jacal has been serving family specialties, like their famous chile relleno, turkey tacos, turkey enchiladas, flautas

and shrimp burritos. We recommend their very special turkey tamales with a wonderful mole sauce made with black Pasilla Chiles, which you can order off the menu all-year-round. Tony’s Jacal has a beautiful floral outdoor garden patio and live Mariachi music in the evenings. Their classic cantina has new lighting, a new granite bar top, and comfortable bar stools. The lounge offers a wide selection of tequila and Margaritas, and serves a variety of mezcal. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 5-7pm. Ask for a delicious Margarita or a tasty Mezcal Paloma with grapefruit soda on the rocks. Lunch is served Mon-Sat 11am-2pm: Dinner is served Weekdays 5-9:30pm; Fri and Sat 5-10pm; Sun 3-9:30pm. They are closed on Tuesdays except during racing season. If you are looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant experience, with wonderful hosts, food, drinks, and the finest service, Tony’s Jacal is the place! Tony’s Jacal is located west of the I-5 Fry and just south of Lomas Santa Fe on 621 Valley Avenue, Solana Beach, 92075. Call (858) 7552274 or visit www.tonysjacal.com

Bruegger’s Bagels

Bruegger’s Bagels is open every day of the year. Pick up a dozen green bagels and cream cheese and treat your family or co-workers on St. Patrick’s Day! There’s nothing better than eating piping hot bagels right out of the oven. Try a Bruegger’s Turkey Sandwich on a hot-fromthe-oven Jalapeno and cheese or onion bagel. Or start your day with one of their classic breakfast sandwiches with a poached egg and your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. We recommend their Western Bagel sandwich with egg, bacon, cheddar, chipotle sauce, green pepper, red pepper, and red onion on a fresh hot bagel. Of course, our all-time favorite is their classic Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese, stacked high on a fresh bagel with sliced tomato, red onions and capers. During the holidays try one of their delicious French toast bagels, with cream cheese. In addition to their famous bagels, breakfast sandwiches and

bagel sandwiches, Bruegger’s also offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. If you are a calorie counter, try one of their Skinny Bagels. Guests can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus varieties “skinny,” due to Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the recipe of its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Bruegger’s operates 300 bakeries in North America with 8 bakeries in San Diego. You can find a Bruegger’s Bagels in North County at 7680 El Camino Real, Carlsbad 92009, or at 10625 Scripps Poway Parkway in Poway. Call (760) 632-1432 or (858) 577-0300 or visit www.brueggers.com to find a location near you.

Home Sellers Advisory Advisory #1: Beware of the “High Price” listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a signed listing contract by presenting an unrealistic high list price, and knowing that the seller will eventually have to lower the list price to sell their home. Two clever responses can help sellers mitigate this scenario. Advisory #2: Beware of the “Universal Phone Call” that goes something like this; “Hello, I have a buyer interested in buying your home, are you interested in selling?” Truth is, very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer. If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is only if that specific buyer buys your home. Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise”. These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most

of their own listings, with no other agent involved, and because of this, they will lower the total listing commission from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings! This is easily verified by an MLS printout of SOLD listings that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in all the sales. Are they the same offices? Probably not. This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, owner and broker of Boe Real Estate; sharing 30-years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes. David Boe personally handles all the negotiations and required paperwork, and has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates to buyers. You can reach David Boe at his direct line at (760) 846-0486 or visit www.DavidBoe.com. CalBRE#00672393.

The Crossings at Carlsbad is nestled in the natural habitat and wildlife on more than 400 acres of Carlsbad’s coastal terrain. This is a challenging and very fun 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Greg Nash. The clubhouse is equipped with a starters desk, apparel and golf equipment boutique, has an adjoining bar with HD TVs, outdoor patio with golf course and ocean views, and is attached to The Canyons restaurant. The Canyons offers a Sunday brunch with carving and serving stations, and a very lively happy hour, with excellent food specials, $5 well drinks, drafts, and wine, and happens Monday–Friday from 3 to 6pm. Friday evenings enjoy live music from 5–7pm. Call (760) 444-1888 or visit www. thecrossingsatcarlsbad.com.

14th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival March 18-24 The Japanese Friendship Garden of San Diego once again welcomes spring with their annual Cherry Blossom Festival from March 18 to 24. Visitors are able to enjoy the Japanese custom of hanami—appreciating the beauty of cherry blossom flowers. In past years, the cherry blossoms have attracted over 12,000 people; attendance is expected to surpass that number this year. Just a heads up, sometimes the blossoms aren’t in full bloom during the festival. We

recommend calling the venue to get updated. This year, instead of hosting the festival over just one weekend, the festivities are extended into a festival week. Special programming takes place during the weekdays. Visitors can purchase tickets to after-hours events in the garden, including workshops, demonstrations and other interactive activities. During the festival weekend of March 22 to 24, each day is accompanied by various vendors, cultural performances and demonstrations and a plethora of familyfriendly activities. The celebration continues down the trail to the lower garden, where guests can find the cherry tree
