We’re Giving Away Free Tickets! Matilda The Musical August 1–3 Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning Matilda The Musical is a production from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination, and the story of a girl who dreams of a better life. Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however—the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. Packed with high-energy dance numbers, catchy songs and an unforgettable young actress, Matilda The Musical is a joyous girl power romp.
West Side Story August 14–31 Based on the book by Arthur Laurents and featuring a score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, the world’s greatest love story takes to the streets in this landmark Broadway musical. Romeo and Juliet are transported to New York City as two young, idealistic lovers who find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas. Victor/Victoria September 11–28 Victor/Victoria is a witty, comic romp examining questions of gender, identity and love in 1930s Paris. English soprano Victoria Grant finds herself at a nightclub, without work or money, where she meets Carroll Todd, or “Toddy,” a performer at the club who gets fired trying
North Coast Repertory Theatre Another Roll of the Dice August 1–4 The world premiere of Another Roll of the Dice re-unites songwriter Frank Loesser and author Damon Runyon, the creators of the legendary Broadway musical Guys and Dolls. In “Dice,” three classic Runyon stories are intertwined with hits from the Frank Loesser songbook, including “Heart and Soul,” “Two Sleepy People,” and “Let’s Get Lost,” performed by iconic Runyonesque characters. Tenderly: The Rosemary Clooney Musical August 15–25 Tenderly is based on the life of Rosemary Clooney, who was hailed as America’s favorite girl singer. This new musical biography offers a personal and poignant picture of the
woman whose unparalleled talent and unbridled personality made her a legend. The production tells both the story of her successes on film, radio and TV, as well as her personal struggles, and features many of her signature hits, including “Hey There (you with the stars in your eyes),” “Tenderly,” and “Come On-A My House.” Amadeus September 4–29 With the music of Mozart as a backdrop, Peter Shaffer’s Tony Awardwinning tale of composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri starts North Coast Repertory Theatre’s new season on a rousing note. Told in a series of flashbacks laced with humor, intrigue and personal insight, Amadeus explores men who are consumed with jealousy and blissfully unaware of an extraordinary gift. North Coast Repertory Theatre is located at 987 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Solana Beach. For more information, call (858) 481-1055 or visit www.northcoastrep.org.

Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family. San Diego Civic Theatre is located at 1100 Third Ave., San Diego. Since 1933, the Pageant of the Masters has been fascinating sold-out audiences year after year with its extraordinary one-ofa-kind show that combines theater, performance art, and art history. The 2019 show, “The Time Machine,” takes audiences around the globe and into the past, present, and future in search of stunning art and amazing stories. Taking its cues from science fiction fantasies, this year’s theme is a ticket to thrills, laughter, beautiful music and extraordinary living art, outdoor and under the stars. Arrive early, park and shuttle to the theatre. Before the evenings performance, enjoy looking at wonderful juried art displays, provided by Laguna Beach’s extraordinary resident artists. their own choices in search of a way forward. Keith Bunin’s new play explores the human capacity for invention and re-invention when life goes off the rails. Kiss My Aztec September 3–October 13 When the Spanish set their sights on Mesoamerica and its riches, they will destroy anyone and anything that keeps them from conquering and claiming it all for themselves. But the Aztecs resist. This irreverent satire could only
spring forth from the mind of John Leguizamo, last seen at the Playhouse in his acclaimed one-man show, Latin History for Morons. Featuring a fusion of bolero, hip hop, merengue and rap, Kiss My Aztec celebrates, elevates and commemorates Latinx culture in an uproarious new musical. to help her. With Toddy’s help, Victoria becomes “Count Victor Grazinski,” a renowned female impersonator. The twist is that she is a woman, claiming to be a man, claiming to be a woman. Things get even crazier when sparks begin to fly between Victoria and a notorious Chicago businessman, King Marchan, and he sets out to uncover “the Count’s” secret. The show is based on a 1933 German film, written by Reinhold Schünzel and titled Viktor und Viktoria. It was reworked as a musical film in 1982. Select films related to San Diego County will also be shown in the returning Local Film Showcase.

Guests also have a chance to meet U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Jeannie Leavitt, who was named the first female fighter pilot in 1993 and was the first woman to command a USAF combat fighter wing. Other pre-show activities include music, red carpet photo opportunities, resource tables and giveaways from military-connected organizations. Guests are asked to bring a donation of new socks for local homeless veterans and military families in need. For more information, visit www.gifilmfestivalsd.org.

Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee
I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her Englishspeaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge). The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator attendant opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me.
I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.
Home Seller’s Advisory #3 Beware of discount real estate commissions that do not offer 100% MLS exposure and maximum Internet exposure. They will try to market your property on their website and not in the MLS. This is not in the seller’s best interest for a maximum sales price. Maximum exposure will get sellers the maximum price. The Internet has leveled the playing field. So, look for full service with maximum exposure with companies like Boe Real Estate.
This advisory to sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, owner and broker of Boe Real Estate, offering 35 years broker experience and selling over 1,000 homes. The U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Exposition returns to San Diego’s downtown waterfront for three days of fun, sun, and spectacular scenery. Hailed as “Best U.S. Labor Day Event in 2018” by CNN Travel, the event is in its 8th year as one of the world’s most prominent sand-sculpting competitions. It is hosted by Port of San Diego Experiences and takes place on a built-for-the-occasion beach, with over 300 tons of sand dumped onto San Diego’s Broadway Pier. It runs from 10am to 8pm on Saturday and Sunday, and from 10am to 7pm on Monday (Labor Day). The competition features 12 Master Class Sculptors, seven from different countries around the world and five from the United States. There are no more than 50 artists in the world who compete at this level and those who appear in San Diego are among the very best. They carve
museum-quality sculptures, made entirely from sand and water that can reach up to 15 feet tall and weigh over 20,000 pounds. In addition to the art in the sand, attendees can shop for more than 2,000 original works of art in other forms, such as hand-made clothing and accessories, wood and metal art, beautiful gourds, glass art, jewelry, quilled greeting cards, and paper designs. This year, the Kids Zone has also been expanded to include bounce houses and rides such as European Bungie and Bubble Fun. Children can learn how to build sandcastles from professional sculptors in a giant sandbox. Tickets range from $6 for children (ages 2 to 12) to $10 for adults. Free admission is offered to children 2 and under and active duty military personnel, EMTs, fire fighters and police officers with valid identification. VIP tickets are also available for $30. Broadway Pier is located at 1000 N Harbor Drive, San Diego. For more information, visit call (619) 994-3752 or visit www.ussandsculpting.com.

People from all over the world visit this authentic German delicatessen, butcher shop, Euro-style market and tourist destination. 90-year-old owner and master butcher, John Haedrich (“Big John”) grew up as a butcher’s son in East Germany and moved to West Berlin in 1949 at the age of 20. It is there where he earned his butcher “Master Craftsman Certificate.” In 1959 John moved to Glendale, California, where he eventually started his own business. Ten years later, with his fine reputation as a master butcher and businessman, John moved his business to Carlsbad, and opened his legendary Tip Top Meats, and the rest is history! At 90 years old, John still cuts meat in the back and makes sausage. When he’s in the restaurant and market, he greets and thanks his loyal customers with a big smile, wishes them well and offers a big handshake. John always says, “Never settle for less, because there is no substitute for quality.” He’s the Man, the Butcher, the Legend, and my dear friend. Andy Lee, Owner/Publisher North County Sun.

This popular Washington DC restaurant has a successful and proven menu that is sure to please even the most finicky of palates that enjoy Asian cuisine. Their menu items are well thought out, while both their Korean and Chinese dishes complement each other. For example; a couple of guests might order an Orange-ish Chicken entrée, which is chunks of white meat chicken breast with a candied/glaze orange coating with a side of dipping sauce. This comes with a bowl of sticky rice. We recommend trying this along with their Korean-style stirred fry noodles and veggies. Kimchi pickles goes nicely with this too. Tamales Jovita is named after Jovita, the mother. Both mother and daughter bring their love and hard work together in the kitchen preparing and cooking freshly made tamales for their loyal customers every day. Their wonderful, hot and moist tamales are born from their very old Oaxaca Mexico family recipe. Tamales take a long time to prepare and cook and are truly a labor of love, so if you are lucky enough to get to eat a fresh, hot, homemade tamale, you are truly in for a treat. This is what Tamales Jovita is all about. They make 10 kinds of tamales and offer tamale plates that come with rice and beans. Just to give you an idea of how reasonable their prices are, you can order (1) Tamale for $1.99 or a (1) Tamale Plate with rice and beans for $5.99. You can also

This quaint family-owned Indian restaurant, located in San Marcos in the Campus II shopping center near Cal State San Marcos, has a new name, a locally famous executive chef, and is under new ownership. India-born Executive Chef Fiony Fernandes has curated all the elements of the restaurant to present a wonderful culinary experience. He offers his vast collection of authentic Indian dishes made from fresh and seasonal ingredients, and his remarkable 18-year experience in the restaurant industry has taught him how to creatively blend spices with hand picked and internationally imported herbs to prepare in his studio kitchen. He complements his craft with brilliant flavors and grace before presenting his creations for your culinary experience. Urban Tadka offers a “tadka” of fresh ingredients and spices imported from around India. A Tadka Dal is a mixture of many regional spices and vegetables that together make the tastiest curries, sauces and flavors. Their menu consists of both vegetarian and
non-vegetarian dishes. The atmosphere is friendly, the service is professional, the serving portions are bountiful, and the menu prices are on the lower end of most Indian curry restaurants. Everything we have tried on their menu has been delicious. We highly recommend their Amritsari Saag Paneer (homemade simmered spinach with cheese cubes, tomatoes and exotic spices). Try the Chicken Tikka Masala (white meat grilled chicken cooked in a spiced creamy tomato and paprika sauce). Also one of our favorites is their Paneer Tikka Biryani Rice (char-grilled paneer tikka cooked with special sauce, spices and herbs). Their menu has vegetarian and non-vegetarian main entrees, seafood entrees, Tandoori Kababs, Indo-Chinese entrees, 13 types of Naan, Biryani Rice dishes, appetizers, Kati Rolls, soups and salads, desserts, Lassi smoothies, beer and wine. Tony’s Jacal is one of the most exciting and lively places to be throughout summer and especially during horse racing season. Days and evenings are sure to be lively, especially the bar, so arrive early to avoid waiting for a table. Tony’s is one of the most famous and historic Mexican restaurants and cantinas in San Diego. You never know who you might see there; including celebrities, horse owners, and jockeys. According to Zagat, “Tony’s Jacal is one of the most authentic north of the border Mexican restaurants.” Taste the flavors of old Mexico and enjoy the history of one of the first Mexican restaurants in San Diego. Tony’s Jacal (pronounced hakal) is one of San Diego’s oldest and most treasured Mexican restaurants. Located in Solana Beach, Tony’s Jacal is a historic San Diego landmark which opened its doors in 1946 as a small neighborhood house where neighbors would stop by for a delicious meal. Its reputation increased over the years because their cuisine is absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere and service are equally outstanding. For three generations, Tony’s Jacal has been serving family specialties, like their famous chile relleno, turkey tacos,
turkey enchiladas, flautas and shrimp burritos. We recommend their very special turkey tamales with a wonderful mole sauce made with black Pasilla Chiles, which you can order off the menu all-year-round. Tony’s Jacal has a beautiful floral outdoor garden patio and live Mariachi music on weekend evenings. Their classic cantina has new lighting, a new granite bar top, and comfortable bar stools. Patron–Tortilleria and Carniceria
We want everyone in San Marcos and nearby communities to know where to find the best authentic Mexican fresh-made-daily tacos ($.99); hot, fresh, handmade daily tortillas (10 for $2.99); and Carne Asada combo plates for $6.99. On a hot summer day try their fresh-made-daily Aguas Frescas! Aguas Frescas is really popular in Southern California. Aguas Frescas is fresh squeezed and blended fresh fruit mixed with water and ice. Patron serves very large 32 oz. cups for only $2.99. It’s a large serving, and an amazing deal. It comes in many delicious fresh fruit combinations, like pineapple and orange, watermelon, papaya, and kiwi. Our favorite has all kinds of mixed fruit in it, including apples. You can see lots of freshly chopped fruit chunks mixed with blended juice. It’s really delicious. Locals go to Patron and get freshly made, piping hot tortillas every day around 4-6pm. Why buy department store tortillas when you can get fresh, hot tortillas? And, why pay more for tacos when you can get authentic street tacos (custom made) for under a dollar? All tacos are made to order!
If you’re staying at the Marriott Fairfield Inn on San Marcos Blvd, or if you’re a student at Palomar College or CSUSM, or you live in San Elijo Hills and you want authentic Mexican food, try eating and shopping where Mexican-Americans go. Patron has an assortment of guacamole and salsa that is made fresh daily; Mexican cheeses and canned goods; fresh fruit and vegetables, including locally-grown tomatoes, avocados, lemons and papayas; and their own butcher shop, with chicken, beef, goat, and pork. This is the place to buy Carne Asada for your summertime BBQ party! Every morning, Patron customers pick up delicious, hot tamales, and in the afternoon – piping hot, hand-made tortillas. Patron custom-makes their tacos. For your taco meat, we recommend Birria, a flavorful beef or goat stewed meat, or their chicken mole. Top off your taco with red or green salsa, Mexican avocado sauce, cheese, onions, and fresh sliced lime. They often sell-out of tamales and tortillas; so get there early! Patron is located at 204 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos 92078. Call (760) 736-0086.

Rosati’s Pizza
With over 30 local craft beers on tap, happy hour at Rosati’s is very lively Monday through Friday from 3-7pm with beer and wine and appetizer specials. They have live music every Friday night. Bring your family and enjoy a real Chicago-style meal indoors, or dine on their spacious patio. If you’re a pizza lover or are from Chicago or the mid-west, then you most likely know about Rosati’s Pizza. Their delicious, cheese dripping Chicago-style deep dish Italian pizza created by Ferdinand Rosati was originated when he opened his first restaurant on Taylor Street in Chicago in 1906, a hundred and twelve years ago. Back then, the pizza was old-world with tomato sauce served on crispy bread. In 1927 Ferdinand’s son, Saverio, opened a Rosati’s on Pulaski Street. Skip ahead to 1964 when Saverio’s sons took over and proceeded to open ten locations, and now have 200 restaurants nationwide. Authentic Chicago-style deep-dish pizza has two main ingredients: Italian tomato sauce and Mozzarella cheese. This delicious combo is
baked inside a deep-dish crust. You can order yours this authentic way; or you can add an assortment of toppings. Rosati’s deep-dish crust is light and crispy. We don’t know how they do this; but it’s a special craft to make deep-dish with a crispy crust. Their deep-dish pizza is mouth watering with mounds of gooey Mozzarella and topped with Pomodoro tomatoes. It’s something you must add to your bucket list. Caution: It takes about 30-45 minutes to bake this pie perfectly. They also serve Chicago-style thin crust pizza, as well as gluten-free thin crust pizza! Rosati’s offers build-your-own pasta, specialty pastas, calzone, salads, and desserts. Clip their Wing Wednesdays Coupon from our coupon pages or download from http://northcountysun.com/category/coupons/. Not valid with other offers or specials. Must present coupon. Rosati’s Pizza is located at 337 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas 92024. They offer local delivery and catering. Call ahead 760-452-2007.
Daily News Café
Whether you are a Carlsbad Village local, or someone visiting for the first time, you’ll understand why the Daily News Café is one of our all time favorites! This historic restaurant is a North County destination and has been serving the community since 1990. This year they are celebrating their 29th anniversary in downtown Carlsbad Village. This is the place to go to enjoy an American classic breakfast or an ice-cold craft beer with a delicious sandwich and salad for lunch. Most of their staff and cooks have been working there for years and have become local celebrities. Waitress Deena Vongxay has been serving happy customers for 27 years. The longevity of the staff, as well as the great food and service, are the reasons for the popularity of this downtown village bistro. Enjoy homemade comfort breakfasts and lunches, inside or outside on the beautiful patio and taking in the sunshine and fresh ocean air. Four times a year, retired Marine officers who flew A-4 Skyhawks, during the Vietnam war (and after), gather to meet at their favorite breakfast place
in Carlsbad. These Marine Vets come from near and far to meet at the Daily News Café. Just steps from Carlsbad Beach, with a picturesque view of the Carlsbad sign on highway 101, breakfast is served all day every day, and lunch is served from 11am to 4pm. Their very popular menu includes Bloody Marys and Mimosas and a wide assortment of omelets from $8.95. All omelets come with hash browns, sautéed red potatoes, fresh fruit or refried beans and your choice of toast, biscuit, or blueberry muffin. Other breakfast favorites include Eggs Benedict, Huevos Rancheros, and a Breakfast Burrito. Try their Belgian Waffles, Buttermilk Pancakes, French Toast, and wide assortment of Crepes. Lunch includes a 1/3 pound Belly Bomber Burgers, Chicken Sandwiches and many other sandwich and salad options. We love their Half Sandwich and Soup combo and recommend their Chicken Salad Sandwich served with any of their delicious seasonal soups. Daily News Café is located at 3001 Carlsbad Blvd, Carlsbad 92008. They are open daily from 6:30am to 4pm.

Pollos Maria
Pollos Maria has arguably the best tasting char-broiled chicken in North County and throughout San Diego. Located in the Village of Carlsbad and in Oceanside at the Old Grove Market Place, Pollo’s Maria has been serving the most delicious, freshest, and healthiest Mexican food to satisfied customers for 34 years! The service is friendly, fast, and efficient; the menu is extensive, and the prices are reasonable. If you are looking for great tasting Mexican food, we can’t say enough about this place. The Oceanside restaurant interior is spacious, beautifully decorated and perfect for parties or corporate meetings. Their Carlsbad Village location has a really nice outdoor patio with umbrellas and fire pits and is the perfect place to hang out with family and friends. The course follows a scenic and primarily flat 25-mile loop around San Diego Bay via the Bayshore Bikeway. Along the way, riders travel through the surrounding cities of Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and National City on dedicated bike lanes and routes. The ride loops back to Embarcadero Marina Park South for post-ride entertainment, food, vendors, a beer garden, and a special VIP area. For an additional fee, participants can opt for an extra eight miles on the Gravel Loop in Otay Valley Regional Park. Mountain bikes, hybrids and gravel bikes are recommended for the fairly flat cruise, which diverges from the Bayshore Bikeway at the west end of Main Street in Chula Vista. The ride follows the dirt trails east past Interstate 805 and reconnects to the Bayshore Bikeway south of the finish line. Bike the Bay registration is required. Embarcadero Marina Park South is located at 1 Marina Park Way, San Diego. For more information, visit www.bikethebay.net.
