Switchfoot Bro-Am + Rob Machado Bro Junior July 11, Surf contest: 7-3:30pm and Concert: 12-5pm Grammy Award-winning rock act Switchfoot hosts the 11th Annual Switchfoot Bro-Am Presented By Hurley featuring a pre-event auction night, charity surf contest, the Rob Machado Bro Junior, and beach concert—all to benefit local at-risk youth and humanitarian causes. The Switchfoot Bro-Am beach day on July 11 at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, will feature a surf contest, live music performances, and nerf surf jousting exposition between surf contest heats. This year’s event will welcome back the 4th annual Rob Machado Bro Junior. Open to youngsters ages 16 and under, the Rob Machado Bro Junior places a premium on the competitor having the most fun. Rather than a financial donation, entrants bring gently- used surf clothes to the beach on competition day as their entry fee. An annual event near and dear to Switchfoot’s heart, the Bro-Am was created to give back to the San Diego community while benefiting local children’s charities through funds raised at a pre-event auction night soiree on July 8, as well as from vendors on the beach the day of. Since its inception in 2005, the Bro-Am has raised more than $900,000 for San Diego-based children’s charities, and the members of Switchfoot recently created the Switchfoot Bro-Am Foundation. Continuing its eco-friendly efforts, the Switchfoot BroAm will again work with San Diego-based Alternative Power Productions to offer solar-powered sound and staging. To help alleviate parking and traffic, there is a free shuttle available from San Dieguito Academy. Visit https:// www.facebook.com/SwitchfootBroAm.

Dining, Sipping, and Drinking Pelly’s Fish Market and Restaurant
Relax and sit on a sunny afternoon or a warm summer evening on the patio at Pelly’s Fish Market and Restaurant. Pelly’s is the perfect place for a fresh fish lunch or dinner, and it’s great for people watching. Located in the Poinsettia Village Shopping Center, just steps from Carlsbad Beach, between Starbucks and Subway, you’ll enjoy some of the tastiest char-grilled fish sandwiches, plates, or salads in San Diego. The food is simply amazing and their Fresh Fish Market is always stocked with great local catch. Pelly’s Fish Market and seafood restaurant offers locals and visitors the freshest fish in town. Pelly’s is one of the original fish markets in Coastal North County. On any given day, they offer large fillets of fresh ahi, yellowtail, albacore, mahi-mahi, halibut, Atlantic salmon, swordfish, white sea bass (shown in photo), and a wide assortment of local shellfish including oysters,
clams, mussels and lobster when in season. Pelly’s has an excellent reputation with locals for serving delicious fresh fish lunches and dinners. We recommend their char-grilled mahimahi and halibut sandwiches, plates or salads, and their fresh grilled fish tacos. If you’re in the mood for a salad, you’ll love their fresh Ono salad, Pelly’s special salad, or their stone crab salad. They have the best chowder, too! Try their famous Manhattan red or Boston white clam chowder. Pelly’s is not a fancy sit-down restaurant, but the quality of their seafood more than makes up for it…and their prices are very reasonable. Pelly’s very popular Seafood Platters will suit any size party or Father’s Day family get-together. Pelly’s Fish Market is open 7-days a week. They are located in the Poinsettia Village Shopping Center at 7110 Avenida Encinas #101, Carlsbad CA 92011. Call (760) 431-8454 or visit www.pellysfish.com.

Gaglione Bros. Famous Steaks & Subs
After 10 years and two very successful San Diego-based sandwich shops, Gaglione Bros. has finally opened their newest and third location in Encinitas. The word is traveling fast how amazingly delicious their sandwiches are. We absolutely love their sandwiches! If you haven’t tried one, you are seriously missing out. We are very happy to share with you a discount coupon (to try a sandwich) on our Coupon Pages and at www.NorthCountySun.com/coupons. Their hearth baked sandwich rolls come from the famous Amoroso Bakery that has been making rolls since 1904. With a wide variety of sandwiches on the menu, their famous Cheesesteak is their pride and joy, but don’t just rely on the Cheesesteak because their other sandwiches are all amazing and exceptional. Our all-time favorite is their Turk sandwich. Years ago a place in Miramar had a similar sandwich called Turkey Day Any Day, but this one is just as good, if not better! The Turk is fresh baked turkey, with stuffing, cranberry and mayo. It’s
absolutely addicting and one of the best sandwiches on planet earth. Motivated by what a quality, superbly tasting sandwich should be, the brothers began cooking and testing in older brother Joe’s kitchen in Pacific Beach. They added some old family recipes that have been passed down and assembled what was to become the first shops original menu. In 2004, feeling confident they created a recipe for success, the brothers opened the first Gaglione Bros. Famous Steaks & Subs in Point Loma. Their newest location in Encinitas opened just a few months ago. Gaglione Bros. Famous Steaks & Subs is open Monday through Sunday, 11am to 9pm, and is located at 252 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas, 92024 between Encinitas and Leucadia boulevard (in the same plaza as Rubio’s and TJ Maxx). Other locations are in Point Loma, and San Diego. For the Encinitas location, call (760) 944-1521 or visit www.gaglionebros.com.

Filled with taut drama and deception, the story unfolds in reverse chronology as we take this treacherous journey with characters that are compelling and brimming with human frailty. Passionate, explosive and surprisingly funny, BETRAYAL is considered one of Pinter’s most innovative and influential works, one that is certain to provoke lively discussion long after the curtain falls. “Pinter writes with manipulative precision.” New York Post “…passionate, painful…truly illuminating.” London Theatre Journal Side by Side by Sondheim July 15–August 9 Revel in the sophistication, wit, insight, heart and genius of Broadway’s most innovative and influential artist, compos-
La Jolla Playhouse Come from Away EXTENDED! Until July 5 Come from Away is an original, rock-inspired world-premiere musical based on the true story of when the isolated town of Gander, Newfoundland played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover when 38 planes were diverted to Gander on September 11, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the spirited town cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family.
er-lyricist Stephen Sondheim. You’ll hear familiar favorites from such shows as Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum, Westside Story, Gypsy and so many more. It’s an unmatched evening of enchantment for musical theatre fans.“The sparkling sophistication and elegance of Mr. Sondheim…in the world of American musicals, he is indisputably the best, brightest and most influential talent to emerge during the last half century.” New York Times The Girl Singers of the Hit Parade August 20–30 The Girl Singers of the Hit Parade is an entertaining show jam-packed with hit after hit from some of the best-loved female vocalists of all-time. Sit back and enjoy your favorites from Rosemary Clooney: “Hey There”, “Come On-a My House”; Patti Page: “Tennessee Waltz”, “Old Cape Cod”; Doris Day: “Que Sera Sera”, “Secret Love”; Connie Francis: “Where The Boys Are”, “Who’s Sorry Now”, and Up Here July 28-September 6 When introverted, 30-something computer repairman Dan finds a potential spark with outgoing t-shirt designer Lindsay, his attempts at a relationship are thwarted by the Technicolor world in his head. This world-premiere musical goes where no musical has gone before, bringing to life the circus of judgmental, neurotic, ever-changing characters that rule an ordinary man’s mind. Headquarters Salon and Wig Store is Expanding The Headquarters, voted Retailer of the Month by Raquel Welch Wigs, is expanding and opening their second store in June. The new store location called, HQ Wigs Too, will be located at 105 West Grand Avenue in Escondido. Owner Cathy Ketchum is an expert with wigs and styling hair and her specialty is working with chemo patients. It has been her dream to have a foundation to help patients that need help purchasing a wig. Ketchum’s 501(c)(3) charity foundation “Feel Great Look Great, Inc” does just this. Chemo patients that need help with purchasing a wig can apply for financial assistance. The Foundation board considers every application. High quality human hair wigs can get pricey. Ketchum says, “Some chemo patients need better quality or sometimes real hair wigs that will last through washing and maintaining for two years or longer.”
Just like The Headquarters in San Marcos, HQ Wigs Too will also carry an extensive inventory of synthetic and human wigs and hairpieces by Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, and Eva Gabor. Each store has a private consultation room. The Headquarters and HQ Wigs Too will find and fit you with the perfect wig. The Headquarters is a full-service salon and will custom cut your wig to perfectly fit. To make the wig more natural they will also color it to match your hair color. Ketchum continues, “My whole heart is in the chemo side of the business. I just love my work so much. It’s not about the money.” The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store is located at 405 N. Twin Oaks Valley Rd #114, San Marcos 92069. HQ Wigs Too is located at 105 West Grand Ave, Escondido 92025. Call (760) 744-2911.
Home Sellers Advisory This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, the owner and broker of Boe Real Estate… sharing 30 years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes. Advisory #1: Beware of the “High Price” listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a signed listing contract by presenting an unrealistic high list price…knowing that the seller will eventually have to lower the list price to sell their home. Two clever responses can help sellers mitigate this scenario. Advisory #2: Beware of the “Universal Phone Call” that goes something like this; “Hello, I have a buyer interested in buying your home, are you interested in selling?” Truth is very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer. If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is only if that specific buyer buys your home. Buyer’s broker commission is normally 2.5 to 3 %...so why pay more? Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise”. These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of their own listings, with no other agent involved...and because of this, they will lower the total listing commission
from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings! This is easily verified by an MLS printout of SOLD listings that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in all the sales. Are they the same offices?...probably not. Advisory #4: Beware of a lower than normal commission posted in MLS to “buyer’s broker”. While commissions are negotiable, money motivates sales people and buyer’s agents typically expect a minimum of 2.5% for selling a median priced home…and they deserve it! If less than 2.5% is proposed by your listing agent, ask them for an MLS printout of the listings for your neighborhood that will clearly show the commissions paid to other buyer brokers…rarely will you see less than 2.5%. You want maximum agent motivation to sell your home by offering at least 2.5% to the buyer’s broker. David Boe offers 30 years of broker experience selling over 1,000 homes and he personally handles all the negotiations and all the required paperwork. For 30 years, David Boe has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates to buyers. You can reach David Boe at his direct line at (760) 846-0486 or visit www.DavidBoe.com. CalBRE#00672393.

Comic-Con International San Diego July 9-12 Comic-Con International San Diego is so big, nowadays it overflows from the San Diego Convention Center and spills out onto the streets of San Diego. Some say the scene outside is just as amazing as the scene inside. It’s really hard to get tickets, so if you don’t have one, you may consider the Comic-Con street scene in the Gaslamp District and along San Diego Embarcadero nearby the Convention Center. Comic-Con began 45 years ago when a group of San
Diegans which included Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger and Mike Towry, inspired by their love for comics, movie, and science fiction, banded together to put on the first comic book convention in southern California. The first three-day San Diego Comic-Con (called San Diego’s Golden State ComicCon), was held August 1-3, 1970, at the U.S. Grant Hotel, with guests Ray Bradbury, Jack Kirby, and A. E. van Vogt attracting over 300 attendees for the groundbreaking event. With attendance topping 130,000 in recent years, the convention is the largest in the Americas and fourth largest in the world after the Comiket in Japan, the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France, and the Lucca Comics and Games in Italy. Originally showcasing comic books, science fiction, fantasy, film, and television, ComicCon International has expanded to include a larger range of pop culture elements, such as horror, animation, anime, manga, cartoons, movies, TV shows, toys, collectible card
games, video games, web comics, and fantasy novels. A cultural magnet for San Diego the convention offers a schedule featuring comics and all aspects of the popular arts, including hands-on workshops and educational and academic programming such as the Comics Arts Conference; Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards- the “Oscars” of the comics industry, a Masquerade costume competition with prizes and trophies, an Autograph Area, an Art Show and a Portfolio Reviews area. Comic-Con International San Diego is a nonprofit educational corporation dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular art forms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture. Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done in Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a pretty good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown. It wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S.. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. I called her office and asked many questions. Her English-speaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try, and I’m glad I did! The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a
walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge!) The driver, Manny, spoke perfect English. In about 5 minutes we arrived at a beautiful tall building. There was a nice coffee shop in on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator woman opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. I was soon called in. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and
hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000 and had one of the best dental experiences ever. Manny drove me back to the border (no charge, but I gave him a $10 tip). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun. Keep smiling!

The 8th Annual Carlsbad Beach Fest will be held on Saturday, June 13, from 8am to 3pm at beautiful Tamarack State Beach in Carlsbad. The event is free and open to the public, with the goal of raising awareness and generating support for coastal preservation, stewardship, improvement projects and educational scholarships. Events throughout the day will include live local music, local food, dancing, sand sculpting, a beach cleanup, and interactive educational and artistic activities for children and adults. Nearly the entire event will be powered by solar energy panels. The sand pile used for sand sculpting will be watered with seawater, rather than potable drinking water (in a drought season). Reusable bags will be made available for beach cleanup activities while supplies last. Free t-shirts will be available for cleanup volunteers while supplies last. Beach cleanups are a great way to help improve beach and ocean cleanliness, but they only deal with the symptoms of the problem, not the actual problem itself. This is
why the Carlsbad Beach Fest stresses stewardship and personal responsibility by promoting a “pack-in, pack-out” or “leave no trace” philosophy. If you bring something to the beach – whatever it may be – you are asked to take it home with you and leave no trace that you were ever there…outside of your footprints in the sand. The mission of the Carlsbad Beach Fest is: clean beaches, clean oceans, stewardship, and education. The event highlights the beach, ocean, and lagoon waterways found within Carlsbad, and raises awareness concerning the effects of marine debris, and provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to participate in beach cleanups throughout the day…while having fun doing so. Informational and educational event booths will be located adjacent to Tamarack State Beach parking lot at the bottom of the ramp below the intersection of Carlsbad Boulevard and Tamarack Avenue. For more event details, visit www.carlsbadbeachfest. com. (760) 271-5787.

62nd Annual World Championship Over The Line Tournament in Mission Beach July 11-12 and July 18-19, 7:30 am The Old Mission Beach Athletic Club’s Over The Line Tournament (OTL) has become more than just a local San Diego tradition. With the first tournament being held over 60 years ago, OTL has become notorious worldwide. This year the event is held on July 11 and 12 and the following weekend on July 18-19. Men and women of all ages, from all over the world, flock to Mission Bay’s Fiesta Island to compete in this one-of-a-kind event. The tournament is expected to draw more than 50,000 competitors and spectators. Over The Line participants compete in a softball-like bat and ball sport. Three player teams are encouraged to create unique and unusual names for their teams and many teams participate while wearing wild costumes. The Over The Line court is made of a rope triangle in the sand. Hits are made when a ball is hit into fair territory on the fly without being caught by fielders, when any ball is touched and dropped by fielders or when fielders cross “The Line” or any of its extensions when attempting to catch a ball. Three hits in an inning scores one run, while each additional hit in that same inning scores one
more run, and a home run “Clears the Bases.” On the first weekend of play, teams compete in three-inning games and any team lucky enough to make it into the second weekend of play will participate in four-inning games. The Over The Line Tournament is a public event and free to attend, however it is not an appropriate or safe event for children due to crowds, bat and ball related games and language. The Old Mission Beach Athletic Club reminds competitors and spectators to follow the seven “B”s: No bottles, No bicycles, No bowzers (dogs), No babies, No boas, No bad attitudes and No battles. There will be several stands to purchase hot food and cold nonalcoholic drinks, as well as a beer garden where beer and mixed drinks will be served. Each year the tournament is held at Mission Bay’s Fiesta Island, which is located at 1590 East Mission Bay Drive. When traveling from North County San Diego to Fiesta Island, take the 5 South to the Sea World Drive exit, head west, turn right on East Mission Bay Drive and the entrance is on the left.
