ith all the issues in today’s world, our young people can feel helpless and anxious. Personally, I’ve found that the best remedy for that feeling is to take action. I have learnt that even one determined individual can make a real difference, even to big institutions like the criminal courts. One of my goals as the MP for Whangārei is to help young people learn how to connect with their government and advocate for the changes they want. That’s why I am holding Youth Forums every school term, and inviting our high schools to nominate senior student leaders to come together with their peers and me as their local

MP, alongside interesting political speakers. The first session, to be held later this term, is called “Getting Your Voice Heard”. We’ll discuss the mechanics of how to have a say in government through a submission to select committees, petitions or direct discussion with your representatives, or even by drafting your own Bill. This is a non-partisan initiative, intended to educate and empower our young people of all political persuasions, giving them the tools to get their voices heard and encourage participation in government, now and in the future. If you or a teen you know is interested in attending, please talk to your high school.

Together we will develop caring students, maximising their potential

From the principal Principal Edith Painting-Davis reflects that the experiences of 2020 demonstrated how resilient we can be in a crisis. Education has had to adapt and change, and we now have the opportunity to shape the future of learning for our children. We have become more resourceful and the curriculum has been reframed with the students at the centre. Refurbishment of the school continues in 2021 with the new Technology block currently under construction and more innovative learning spaces being created. Academically, Bay of Islands College is performing above the national average statistics for NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3. These results for 2020 were outstanding considering that Covid restricted onsite access and we attribute much of the success to the Manaiakalani Education Trust which was implemented in 2016. When staff, students and whanau went into Lockdown they were already familiar with

learning through the digital platform. What the pandemic did was accelerate the experience and highlight inequities. The Ministry of Education tried to address these issues albeit a bit haphazard but even now, the disparities persist. Another success to accentuate is the Arataki Leadership Programme which has 80 students participating to date. It has given students confidence to explore one day courses such as Papa Taiao and Carving or to join our Gateway programme. Our vision of creating a Bay Trades Academy (BAYTA) is drawing closer every day. We have the potential to be more than just a school. Bay of Islands College’s roll has increased through positive actions and a fabulous Board of Trustees who fully support the wellbeing of all. We work collaboratively and constantly reflect on our practices to demonstrate that we truly are a school that cares.

The role of a leader is to inspire and to motivate others. They demonstrate courage and put the needs of others before themselves for the greater good or to achieve a common goal. Our 2021 Senior Leaders have these qualities and will be provided with many occasions to demonstrate them. They are our ambassadors in the community and represent our school at a variety of events throughout the year. Some of them have already contributed to the positive profile of the school and will continue to hone their leadership skills in their various roles. Te Amorangi ki mua, te hāpai ō ki muri. Head Prefects are at the front, but the rest of the senior leaders are the workers at the back making sure everything is well looked after. Both jobs are equally important, but without one, the other is not as effective.

Kia ora, My name is Leo Palmer and I am humbled to be the Head Boy at Whanga-rei Boys’ High School for 2021. With our school rebuild on track to be completed at the end of this year, I feel honoured to lead the last team of senior prefects in the current school. I am from a beautiful place on Northland’s east coast called Whananaki and I love representing my whanau and iwi Ngati wai with pride. My passion is rugby and this will be my second year in our schools 1st XV. Next year I hope to study teaching or psychology at Auckland University. I have chosen the subjects of Biology, English, Health, Physical Education Development and Psychology to help me achieve my aspirations. I, along with my team of senior prefects, are excited for the many blessings to come in 2021.

Hailing from the beautiful Hokianga located on the wicked west coast, I grew up loving my culture. Participation in ma-ori cultural activities is a must for me. I love performing arts and I wish to pursue drama and attend Toi Whakaari once my time ends at WBHS with the hope of becoming a professional actor. This year I chose to study Drama, Senior Maori Arts, Outdoor education, English and Mathematics. I want to hone my leadership skills as a Deputy Head Boy and look to create positive change in our kura working alongside my fellow Prefects. He waka eke noa!

Kia ora, Ever since I can remember I have looked up to the impressive Prefects at Whanga-rei Boys’ High School and the hard mahi they put in - which I hope to carry on and improve their legacy. With the help of my fellow Whanau captain Kaden Donaldson I hope to lead the Bledisloe Whanau to a successful year, as well as improving my own leadership skills. I have enjoyed living in Whanga-rei most of my life. I always strive to “use every opportunity that comes your way”. This year I hope to endorse Level 3 with Excellence for the third year in row. I also hope to lead the WBHS sailing team to a successful regatta at nationals. Along with sailing, I enjoy a variety of different sports such as squash, surfing, soccer and snowboarding. For the last three years I have also been tutoring younger kids with maths. I am grateful for all the opportunities that I have been given and will continue to use them to help others and myself as much as I can.

The first folds of an origami model are the most important, as are the first years of our lives before adulthood. With this in mind, I took up the position of Deputy Head Boy to develop myself and to develop others. My passions include piano, badminton, dance, running, and of course, origami. However, I ultimately enjoy giving myself a challenge; whether it’s learning to handstand, teaching myself the guitar, or learning an entire external overnight after heavy procrastination. This year, I will be facing my greatest challenge. I aim to place first in New Zealand academically by obtaining the most NZQA scholarships in the country; proving to myself that anything can be achieved with a little luck and a lot of hard work.

I have admired the hard mahi that I have seen the past Whanau Captain leaders that Bledisloe has had. I knew that I wanted this position from the very beginning of my high school years and that I would feel privileged to get it. This year I want to take advantage of my role as Whanau Captain in order to improve my leadership skills, public speaking ability and organisational skills to use further into the rest of my life. Outside of school I balance my part time job with hanging out and socializing with friends. I also enjoy almost all types of physical activity and like to keep fit and healthy.

I have aspired to be in this position since the start of my time at Boys’ High, in awe of all of the past Whanau Captains. This year I am aiming to achieve an Excellence Endorsement in NCEA Level 3 and to qualify and participate in the Hillary Challenge (a 5 day adventure race on Tongariro). Furthermore, I would like to get Carruth back to their winning ways after not doing so well in the past few years. Taking on this position also gives me the opportunity to develop my leadership, something I have developed a passion for. I look forward to what this year has to offer as we enter our final year of high school.

This is a role that I have strived for from year 9, and alongside my fellow Carruthian Prefects I’m sure we can do better for future boys at the hostel. My passions and hobbies are rugby, boxing, hunting and almost anything to do with water. However one of the things that I enjoy most is helping others and this is why I want to join the navy as a marine engineer officer. As quoted by the great Muhammad Ali “service to others is the rent for your room here on earth”. This year my goals are to develop as a leader and learn different ways of leading, as well as endorsing level three and going as far as I can in my chosen sports.

Kia ora,

Kia ora,

Ever since I first enrolled at Whanga-rei Boys’ High School, I have had a keen interest in the part that the Whanau Captains play within the school and surrounding community. I was lucky enough to be one of two Junior Whanau Captains (for half a year) which boosted my confidence in a wide range of areas from leadership to goal setting.

My name is Ben Campbell and I have been selected as one of the Grey House Whanau Captains for 2021. I feel honoured to be selected for this position and am looking forward to the challenges that it will provide throughout the year. A large passion of mine is football - taking up most of my spare time. Throughout my years at Whanga-rei Boys’ High School I’ve been involved in numerous teams, more specifically the Boys’ High 1st Xl, where we have won two of the three national tournaments attended. Goals I am currently working towards are receiving excellence endorsements in all of my chosen subjects, as well as developing my public speaking skills and of course, more importantly, bringing the inter whanau trophy to Grey for a third consecutive year!!!

Ever since year nine, I have aspired to be a Whanau Captain for my house, Hobson. I feel privileged and honoured to have attained my goal, and I am looking forward to what 2021 brings us. Along with this, another goal of mine is to become our schools 1st XV captain, which is one that I am currently working on achieving. My type of leadership is leading by example rather than being vocal in front of crowds. Public speaking has not been a strength of mine, but is something that I wish to develop in 2021.

major part of my life for the last four years. When given the opportunity to give back to a school that has given me so much, I, of course, jumped at the chance to apply for a senior leadership position. The role of Whanau Captain is not one that I would have seen myself in back in year nine, as it seemed both daunting and exhausting. I now know both of these to be true. What I didn’t realise back then was that this is the point; the shaky nerves, background work and planning are what make this job so rewarding.

Kia ora,

Diamond Middleton Marsden Whanau Captain

My personal goals this year are to lead the WBHS 1st XI hockey team to victory both locally and across the country, to achieve excellence endorsements in all my subjects, and, of course, to lead Hobson Whanau to a victory alongside Adyn Jones.

I have the privilege this year to be one of Marsden Whanau Captains and to hopefully lead them to a house victory for 2021 alongside Diamond Middleton . The role of Whanau Captain has always been something I looked to obtain throughout my first four years of high school.

My name is Diamond, and I am privileged to be one of the Marsden Whanau Captains for 2021. Kapa haka and Te Ao Maori has been a major factor in my schooling life, one of my life goals is to speak fluently in Te Reo Ma-ori. I plan on going to University next year to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering however plans could change. In year 10, I had the honour of being a Junior whanau captain (for Marsden) and was able to experience a taste of what the job required of me and to see how exciting this position was for the seniors, and so ever since that moment I have aspired to be a Whanau Captain, In 2020, I had the honour of being awarded the role and I look forward to leading Marsden to victory alongside Quinn Morgan for 2021.

Some of my goals from my past few years as a senior student have been to make the NZ U18 hockey squad and to endorse NCEA with Excellence at every level. So far I have achieved both of these goals and in 2021 I have added the goal of co-leading Grey Whanau to another win in the inter Whanau competition. I look forward to what this year brings us and I can’t wait to get stuck in.

I have played for the WBHS senior volleyball team for the past two years and have been to NZ volleyball nationals twice, and during year 9 I also played for the football first XI. I look forward to going to Auckland University next year and studying Architecture and Civil Engineering, taking the skills I learnt at WBHS into the world and sharing my talents.
