Finn feels she is inspirational to women where once you’d only see the woman in the passenger seat.

Classic vehicles have run through Finnesse Kairau’s blood from day dot. Although it took her around 40 years to own one herself, clapping eyes on a Chevrolet or Thunderbird always triggered something within.

nstead, during a diverse career path involving professional acting, farming, butchery, family violence and aged care, she drove the likes of a Volvo, Land Rover, tractors and quad bikes. Her acting career, which spanned 12 years and included lead movie roles, began at age 14 on the then-new Shortland Street playing pregnant teen Aroha. The controversy her character created once lead to Finn being attacked in a supermarket by an elderly woman. Ironically, working in aged care led to her finally getting behind the wheel of a classic car and follow the dream she’d harboured for 25 years and, these days, the elderly are among her most grateful customers. “One of my clients was 107 and said, ‘You’ve got to do it because, by the time you get to our age, you’re not getting any younger’.” By then in her early 40s, Finn left her role in aged care and took the first steps in actioning her plan of owning her own fleet of classic vehicles for tours and funerals – the latter triggered by a deep longing close to the heart. “I’ve lost five of my brothers who were motorcycle enthusiasts and I know they would have just loved that kind of send-off,” Finn says. Her first purchase was in May 2019 with an original Harley Davidson Road King Trike, along with a hearse carriage.

“It was a great find and I saw it as a sign. “When you start, you have a concept and a passion and to see it today and it’s real and happened, is the most beautiful journey.” Her journey really began as a child, the youngest of 12 siblings and a further six halfsiblings, her father collected classic cars and motorcycles and her brothers later followed suit. As a family, they travelled throughout the country and Finn has many memories of isolated and beautiful destinations. “I have long-noted the need for enthusiastic, compassionate local Maori tour guides with a wealth of cultural and local knowledge who are keen to showcase these fascinating venues that are a vital part of our heritage.”

Touring over the open roads in comfort and at a leisurely pace in a well-appointed classic car or motorcycle was definitely the way to go through Finn’s eyes. With family connections in Northland, she settled in Whangarei, after meeting partner Dr Larry Thompson in the Far North while he was working at Kaitaia Hospital. The practising physician, now at White Cross Whangarei, is also her business partner and chief financial officer. Together they carefully crafted a plan, forming Te Ao Mako Enterprises Ltd, based at the Town Basin and from which they run Elysian Wheels, TAME the Beast Classic Excursion Tours and Wedding Cars on Quayside. The couple began sourcing and obtaining their fleet of classic vehicles and preparing them with certification repairs. “Even before we had a garage we had vehicles all over Whangarei,” laughs Larry. The business got off to a good start when they entered the Waipu Classic Car Show in

February winning the Peoples’ Choice award and subsequently obtaining their first funeral job. “It was an affirmation and it felt fantastic.” Then came lockdown. “We were just hanging on by our finger nails but we kept going because there was no way I was turning back,” says Finn, adding that they managed to survive the pandemic by sheer force of will.

The couple spent the time critiquing and finetuning the business while continuing to source further vehicles for their fleet. By the time they emerged from lockdown, they had qualified as an essential service so were able to carry out funeral processions. The service, symbolically named Elysian Wheels, caters for the increasing number of people who desire their funerals to serve as mirrors into their lives providing an alternative to the mainstream traditional funeral service. The funeral procession features a Harley Davidson-drawn carriage escorted by a vintage car to transport the departed loved one and entourage in style on the “last ride” ceremony to the final resting place and can incorporate routes of sentimental value. Says Finn: “Our service is not only for those who ride or who have always wanted to ride, but also for those who want something unique and memorable for their last journey. We aim to do more than mourn the departed. Our goal is to commemorate the life of your loved one in a dignified, yet distinctly celebratory manner.” She added that, though unique, motorcycle hearses are not a new phenomenon. They have been in existence since World War I, when they reportedly were employed to carry bodies back from the battlefields. The usual design consisted of either a modified sidecar or a trailer that bore the coffin. However, the concept only began to make inroads in the funeral industry in the late 1990s. The Elysian Wheels Experience caters nationwide with three days’ notice and has already taken Finn to various parts of the country. Today the fleet stands at 12 and includes a two-seater 1995 Harley-Davidson Road King Trike, a custom-built trailer hearse, a 2014 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Motorcycle Trike, a Futura covered and solar-powered transport trailer, a 1967 Chevy C10 Truck, a

" 1971 Chevy C10 Truck, a 1982 Chevy Camaro, a twin set of matching 1964 Ford Thunderbirds, a converted classic Victorian horse carriage - now a motorcycle-drawn wedding carriage and a freshly-imported state-of-the-art 150-HP turbo 2-passenger Rewaco Power Trike. Vehicles were sourced both online and through word of mouth. “People would see the vehicles parked outside and say, ‘Oh I know of this one down the line…’.” Word of mouth has also led to many jobs along with collaborating with funeral directors. In addition, a collaboration between those in the wedding industry to offer a free wedding to a couple affected by Covid, saw Finn offering her vehicles for the occasion. This opened the door to the wedding industry leading to Wedding Cars on Quayside but, while weddings have taken a back seat with many postponed this summer due to the pandemic, the fleet, nor Finn sit idle for long; when she’s not entering them in car shows around the country, they can often be found parked up at the Town Basin surrounded by onlookers – and this is where TAME the Beast Classic Excursion tours come in. “We showcase the vehicles in public areas and a lot of elderly love the classic cars – it reminds them of the old days when they were 21 when they were in a T-Bird, those were the best days of their lives,” grins Finn. “I’ll let them take a photo sitting behind the steering wheel.” A self-confessed ‘softie’, Finn admits to taking it a step further, often taking people on free tours.

“I’ll have these lovely 90-year-olds sitting in the back cuddling and I call that the ‘Magic Carriage’, it takes them back in time.” She recalls taking a 95-year-old on a trip down memory lane to her old haunts in Onerahi. “She was pointing out where she used to live around Beach Rd which used to be farmland. It really gave me an insight on the history – I’m learning too.” Then there was the four-year-old girl who rode her bike along to the Town Basin with her nana and spotted what is commonly referred to as the “princess carriage”. “She was wearing her tiara so I got them to climb aboard and took them past the parents’ house where they were sitting out on the veranda and could watch her go by.” Finn is currently forming a charitable trust for fundraising to enable adjustable hoist seats so people with disabilities and elderly can also take part in her tours. “I’ve been noticing on my tours there’s a need for accessibility for disabilities or aged care. I don’t like seeing someone next to my vehicles and they can’t get in it. Why should they miss out on a beautiful tour? “The experience that the clientele are having to me is worth more than money. I have no money but I am trying to do something and that will come. To see children smiling and mothers having time with their children, is the best feeling because it feels like you’re making a difference.” As well, her Classic Excursions are enhancing tourism for Northland. Finn recalls the

motorcycle enthusiast couple who recently stopped at Whangarei enroute from Wellington in a campervan with their dog. “The husband had been doing all the driving and he spotted my ad for the trike tour. They booked it so he too could see all the sights. I told them to bring along their dog and I took them to every spot. They had planned to stay three hours and ended up staying three days.” She also supports local businesses by incorporating some as stop-offs enroute while including local points of cultural and historical interest with communication made easy through an intercom system. Of course, Finn receives a lot of attention on the road – both wanted and unwanted. “People are always wanting me to rev it up. I had someone ramming up behind me on the Whangarei Heads road wanting to race. I’m never going to do that. “I forget I’m in a classic car because it’s become normal to me and I’ll get big smiles and thumbs up. I stopped in at Pak n Save the other day and parked up beside a car and asked the man if it was ok if I parked beside him and he said, ‘It’s not every day that a T-Bird parks beside you’. “I’ll often return to my vehicle and find crowds taking pictures and I offer them to sit in it. When people sit in these vehicles, it changes their whole persona.” Finn has big plans for her business eventually they hope to create a fleet throughout the country, employing local drivers, to carry out their funeral processions to help keep travel costs down for the families. SOMETHING for everyone The Waipu Car and Bike Show is a community fundraiser providing something for everyone. From small beginnings of local car enthusiasts just wanting to see what people had tucked away in their sheds, Waipu now welcomes in the vicinity of 600 cars and 150 bikes.

2021 will be the sixth year the Waipu show has operated with Waipu Lions having distributed over $100,000 back to the community to date. Cars and bikes travel from near and far to provide a spectacular display of vehicles across all decades and all categories. Whether its Vintage, custom bikes or Hot Rods, American or Japanese, British or European, there will be something of interest to impress. Often you can see quite rare cars and bikes that aren’t seen elsewhere. With 24 prize categories, the show entices enthusiasts to bring their beauties out to

share with others, offering nostalgia and inspiration to all who attend. Waipu Car and Bike show is a fun event and local car enthusiast judges wander the park looking for what they consider to be the best presentation of each category on the day. In addition, local car restoration company Full Noise sponsor a People’s Choice Award so the public get to choose their pick of the day. Local businesses provide sponsorship to cover costs and support prize packages enabling 100 percent of the funds raised on the day to be returned to the community. This year the proceeds will support the construction of a kids’ activity zone in Waihoihoi Park.

Sponsorship from the main sponsors Craigs Investment Partners and Northpine have enabled further investment into a surround park audio system this year and that, in conjunction with the in-theme dress awards, provide a relaxed “step back in time” atmosphere. Men and women are sought out by the judges to enter the Best Dressed Awards sponsored by local Real Estate Agents James Alexander and Lyndie Mullins. Families are catered for; this is an alcohol-free, patch-free and dog-free event. Bouncy castles and free face painting will keep the kiddies amused and there is a small vendor alley for a wee bit of

Now onto the logistics... How does it work? Light from the laser is passed onto the treatment area, where it is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shift and follicle. What is

freezing fat? There has been a lot of buzz lately about freezing fat, known medically as cryolipolysis.

t is one of the hottest trends in non-invasive body sculpting — that is, losing pockets of fat without needles, knives, or real downtime. Cryolipolysis is a procedure to target and help to eliminate stubborn fat deposits. The hand-held device works by freezing and destroying fat cells, which over the following weeks are metabolised naturally.

The basics of body fat Not all fat is created equal. We have two distinct types of fat in our bodies: subcutaneous fat (the kind that may roll over the waistband of your pants) and visceral fat (the stuff that lines your organs and is associated with diabetes and heart disease). From here on out, when we refer to fat, we are talking about subcutaneous fat, as this is the type of fat that cryolipolysis targets. A recent study showed that the body’s ability to remove subcutaneous fat decreases with age, which means we are fighting an uphill battle with each birthday we celebrate.

From popsicles to freezing fat Cryolipolysis — which literally translates into cold (cryo) fat (lipo) destruction (lysis) — was invented, in part, by observing what can happen when kids eat popsicles. No kidding here. The cofounders of this process were intrigued by something called “cold-induced fat necrosis” that was reported to occur after young children ate popsicles that were inadvertently left resting on the cheek for several minutes. Skin samples taken from paediatric patients like these showed inflammation in the fat, but normal overlying skin. Thus, it appeared that fat may be more sensitive to cold injury that other tissue types. Using this concept, a cooling device was tested on pigs in 2007 to see if fat cells could be selectively destroyed. The results were promising and predictable; there was about a half-inch reduction in the pig’s fat layer, without damaging the overlying skin, in the treated areas.

By 2010, the first cryolipolysis technology approved for human use, named CoolSculpting, was cleared as a treatment for love handles. Clearance for treating other parts of the body, including the thighs, belly, bra fat, back, underside of the buttocks, and chin soon followed. How does cryolipolysis work? A few days after treatment, the cooled fat cells die. Over the next several months, macrophages, part of the immune system’s clean-up crew, digest the dead fat cells. A cool procedure To date, there have been more than eight million CoolSculpting treatments performed worldwide. Unlike liposuction, which can require anaesthesia and comes with risks of bleeding or serious infection, CoolSculpting is a relatively safe procedure, with minimal pain and no downtime. The treatment itself takes 35 minutes per

application, and multiple applications may be needed to cover an area. For instance, 4-6 treatments are recommended to ensure even fat removal from the entire front of the belly. The most common side effects of treatment include redness, bruising, swelling, tingling, numbness, or darkening of the treated area. Most of these side effects, if present, will resolve within several months after treatment. Results can be seen as soon as three weeks, with maximum benefit seen at approximately three months. Average reduction in fat ranges from about 10 per cent to 25 per cent per round of treatment, and there is no evidence of any body-wide side effects. A second round of treatment may be needed after several months, depending on the desired results. Who’s a good candidate for fat freezing? Cryolipolysis appears to be a safe and effective treatment for fat loss without the downtime of liposuction or surgery. But it is important to note that cryolipolysis is intended for fat loss, not weight loss. The ideal candidate is already close to their ideal body weight, but has stubborn, pinchable areas of fat that are difficult to get rid of with diet and exercise alone. Cryolipolysis also doesn’t target visceral fat, so it won’t improve your overall health. But it may help you fit into your favourite pair of skinny jeans.

The Flea Lifecycle There are around 2000 different flea species in the world but the Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the most common flea we see on both dogs and cats.

ound on prehistoric fossils from the dinosaur era, fleas have evolved with clever adaptations to become longlasting and successful parasitic pests. The flea life cycle has two phases; the on-host parasitic phase of the adults and the off-host/ environmental stage of the eggs, larvae and pupae - this makes them tricky to eradicate! The time it takes fleas to reproduce is hugely variable – when all the temperature and humidity are optimal, new fleas can be created within 12 days, but when temperatures and humidity are too high or low, it can take six months to occur. Why is the flea life cycle important? Well, we need to think of the whole flea population as the problem, not just the visible fleas on your pet. For every flea you see on your pet there are probably many more but they are good at hiding in their hair! Seeing five fleas on your pet also means that somewhere in your pet’s environment there are about 100 more lifecycle stages undergoing development to become new fleas. The adult fleas we see are actually just the tip of the flea iceberg!

Here’s five Golden Rules to help keep your pet flea free: 1. Protect ALL your pets against fleas. Cats and dogs share the same fleas so don’t leave any pets untreated because you ‘think’ your cat doesn’t get fleas – he does – he’s just better at hiding them than your dog! 2.Protect your pets with a trusted flea treatment ALL year round Don’t leave pets unprotected over winter. In the New Zealand climate fleas really are a year-round problem. Preventing an infestation is easier than treating one. On average New Zealanders are only using eight weeks of flea treatment on their cats and 11 weeks of flea treatments on their dogs per year. This

is simply not enough to protect them and prevent flea infestations in your home. It takes very low temperatures to kill fleas off, about -1°C for five days, so they can survive in the environment and in our houses all year round in most parts of New Zealand. 3. Check you’re using the right product correctly See your vet or pet specialty store as they supply only trusted flea products. Make sure you read all the instructions inside the packet before using, so that you apply the product correctly, and get the right pack size for your pet’s accurate and recent weight - don’t just guess their weight.

4. Use a dual action pet treatment Use a pet flea treatment that kills BOTH adult fleas AND targets another lifecycle stage too. Advantage, Advocate and Seresto all kill adult fleas on your pet and larval flea stages in the pet’s surroundings. The active ingredient is shed in pet’s dander and hair around their sleeping areas and so larvae are exposed this way. 5. Exercise your patience! If you already have a flea infestation it may take 2-4 months to control flea populations. Fleas that are seen during this time are not adults that have survived previous treatments, but are new fleas still emerging from their cocoons. They will be killed soon after they jump onto their host… provided the host has correctly applied treatment on them. Remember it’s always better to prevent an infestation than tackle one!

t the Packard Motor Museum, a car that exemplifies the early prestige of motoring, is the 1923 Packard Sedan Limousine. Packard advertised themselves as a gentleman’s car built by gentlemen and this limousine certainly fits into such a category. The passenger area of the car is fitted with a spacious rear seat along with two fold-down occasional (dicky) seats to cater for extra people. It is interesting to note that the passenger area is upholstered in a high-quality wool fabric; whereas the front seat where the chauffeur and footman sat is finished in leather. Leather was considered a lower-class type of fabric and therefore allocated to service personnel. A glass partition separates the chauffeur from the passengers so the car is equipped with a speaking tube for communication. However, this system was only oneway. The passengers could communicate with the driver but the driver could not reply. 1923 was an important year for Packard. The company moved from manufacturing the single-six and twin-

six engines to become the first American company to produce a successful straighteight powered motorcar and with braking on all four wheels. Faster vehicles and improved roads meant four-wheel braking enhanced car safety. The new straighteight side-valve engine was 357 ci with a nine main-bearing crankshaft and developed 85 hp.

Fishing tips & tales Yahoo! Whangarei Harbour is fishing very well, right down to Onerahi. A few undersize are being caught but plenty of good-sized snapper also. Running rigs using mullet baits are getting good results - let plenty of line out to get your bait well away from the boat. If you get small bites and no hook-ups or no bites, reel your line in very slowly - bait movement can make all the difference and often results in good catches. All popular spots around Onerahi are fishing well; drifting with straylines on an incoming tide in shallow water in the Takahiwai area, has been very good especially in the evening and very early morning. This can be exciting fishing and often results in good catches of big snapper. The Manganese Pt and banks out of Parua Bay areas have also fished well; not as many big fish but plenty in the 320mm-400mm size range, very good eating. Running rigs well behind the boat, mullet

In 1924 the Paykel family (later part of Fisher and Paykel) imported a similar limousine into New Zealand. Their daughter Bronette, who at the time was aged 24, is reported to have enjoyed driving the car. Graeme Craw purchased the museum’s Packard from Randy Sutton of Texas in 1992. Our car is believed to be the oldest surviving limo straight-eight in the world; a fine example of the elegance of the 1920s.

bait and a very slow retrieve also works in these areas. Also, ledger rigs like snapper snatchers and tarakihi terrors are catching plenty of fish when cast well away from the boat. These rigs also work in the outer harbour main channels - you will need a reasonable-sized sinker to counter the strong currents. Outside, tarakihi are still being caught but not as many as a few months ago, a few legal blue cod, trevally, red pigfish and some very big kahawai are coming off the bottom in 50-plus metres. Snapper over the sand in 10-25 metres off Ruakaka on softbaits and jigs. Some reasonable kingfish are being caught around our Islands; jigs have been very good and live baits are also working well. With plenty of good catches being reported, the local boat ramps have been busy. This is a great time of year for the smallest of boats with plenty of good weather and you don't need to go far. Our beautiful harbour fishing will continue to improve for the next few months - get out there and good luck.

Since its opening in June 2019, the Hihiaua Cultural Centre has built a reputation as a worldclass centre of excellence to preserve, create, display and promote Māori arts and culture.

t is realising the dream of visionaries of the past who called for a centre where Māori identity and culture would be reclaimed, restored and renewed. However, it is not only a place of creativity and entrepreneurship, but also a hub where a unified community gathers to be inspired, build relationships, identity and hope for a shared future. In line with this vision, we are honoured to host the Kākano Fundraising Exhibition by HĀ - History of Aotearoa. The exhibition opens on Waitangi Day, February 6 at 6pm and will run until February 13, with entry by donation. HĀ are a group of youth from Whangarei and Taupō who are passionate about exploring the shared History of Aotearoa through the development and facilitation of education programmes. Kākano is their inaugural programme which encourages Year 10 students to use art as a tool to embrace the collective history of Aotearoa, and imagine our future.

The exhibition features local and national artists, including Simon Kaan, Alicia Courtney, Ayesha Green, Diane Stoppard, and Hihiaua’s own resident carvers, who have generously donated their works to help raise the funds that will enable HĀ to deliver Kākano in 2021. Prior to the opening, on February 5, 12-3pm, HĀ will also be hosting a community event at Hihiaua. At the event, local artists will create art pieces to donate to the exhibition, supported in their creation by students who participated in the HĀ’s first pilot programme at Whangarei Girls High School in 2020. We are also excited this month to be hosting our second ever waka carving symposium which will run from February 15-19 and which will involve some of our resident carvers. The public are welcome to visit and see some of the process in the waka shelter throughout the week. The Hihiaua Cultural Centre Trust is supported by the Whangarei District Council, Te Puni Kokiri, Foundation North, Lotteries, Creative Northland and the Provincial Growth Fund. Planning for the next stage of the Hihiaua development - an even more unique, creative performance, exhibition and conference venue - is well underway. The exhibition presents photos taken at Waitangi Day 2020, which marked the 80th anniversary of the launch of Ngātokimatawhaorua - the waka taua (war canoe) built for the centennial of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in 1940. Photographer Te Rawhitiroa Bosch captured images of the fleet of waka, the kaihoe (paddlers) and those off the water which came to Waitangi to mark the anniversary – including Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern from her waka voyage at Waitangi. A story by rangatahi (youth) from Te Kura o Waiakare about their voyage with the Prime Minister features alongside the images. Two waka taua (war canoes) are displayed in the centre of the gallery – these waka are very significant given they were the last to be created under master carver Tā Hekenukumai Pūhipi (Sir Hec Busby). Famed New Zealand musician Tiki Taane has collaborated on He Kaupapa Waka by creating a soundscape to set the tone of the exhibition. Alongside the photographs taken from Waitangi Day 2020, a series of images documenting the creation of Ngātokimatawhaorua - from the felling of the tree, the carving, through to the launch in 1940, will be on display. A photo collection and reflections from the last surviving crew member of the 1940 maiden voyage, Kaumātua Eru Patuone Heperi, will add a unique insight. Eru is the son of Pita Te Hoe Heperi, one of the master carvers responsible for carving Ngātokimatawhaorua. He was the youngest kaihoe (paddler) on the 1940 voyage and 80 years later, at 92-years-old, he was the oldest crew member at Waitangi in 2020.

He Kaupapa Waka will be on display at Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi Exhibition Gallery. It will be open to the public from February 7.

Opting for a deep paint colour can be just what is needed to take a boring space from drab to dramatic. Are you brave enough to take the plunge?

ark walls are a popular and dramatic design choice – both inside and out – but there are a number of considerations that need to be taken into account, such as lighting and gloss finish levels before you decide to cross to the dark side. Practicalities aside, there is also a certain amount of bravery required before you take the dive into a dramatic wall colour like black, charcoal or midnight blue. But with the right confidence, the result will be unquestionably sophisticated and stylish. Dark colours for interior spaces may seem daunting, but with a bit of Resene know how it is incredibly easy to incorporate dark shades into almost any decor. If nervous, stylist Annick Larkin suggests trying a dark palette in a small room first, such as a powder room, laundry, entryway or office. “You can soften the impact by contrasting dark wall colours such as Resene Bunting, Resene Coffee Bean or Resene Baltic Sea by balancing them out with liberal amounts of a lighter neutral. I paint out everything, window frames, cornices, skirting boards and ceilings so that furnishings magically stand out and add that ‘wow factor’ to the room that you’re after,” says Annick. “Even if you are not ready for full-on dark walls, you can always experiment with black cabinetry, dark interior doors and accents to add drama and dimension to your space.”

One of the richest, most neutral blacks in the Resene palette is Resene Nero. This deep, bold hue is void of any undertones and pairs beautifully with nearly every shade. It is a stunning colour choice for bedroom accent walls or living spaces and makes a statement no matter what room it is used in. A black paint with a hint of a blue undertone, such as Resene Indian Ink, Resene Jaguar or Resene Blue Bark, is a great way to add depth to your space without it feeling too stark or cold. “These colours pair well with lighter blues, greens and metallics; and are perfect for living spaces or entryways where you want to add a lot of dimension, intrigue and glamour” explains interior designer Emma Wallace. Grey-blacks such as Resene Bastille, Resene Shark and Resene Gumboot are a great alternative to rich blacks and are the best option for rooms where you want to create the sensation of a warm and airy cocoon. “Dark grey walls are the prefect hue for creating snug, cosy and intimate spaces,” says Emma.

It is, in fact, a myth that dark colours are unfit for small spaces. However, it is important that you up the lighting when going dark. You will find that you get more shadows and corners blurring into darkness. “This is a good thing, as it can add depth and mystery to a room, but without added lighting, dark spaces can start to feel gloomy and oppressive. Table lights, from experience, give the most atmospheric glow and there are tons on the market from the high street to the flea to the super expensive,” explains Annick. Unless your walls are freshly skimmed, choosing a topcoat in a gloss finish for your dark coloured room can cause each and every imperfection to show – and likely drive you crazy. Instead, choose a matte finish such as Resene SpaceCote Flat, which looks and feels super luxurious. “It’s almost like having velvet on the walls,” says Annick. For those that prefer a little bounce of light, opt for Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen instead. Adding colour to your dark space is easy. “You don’t have to overdo it,” explains Emma, “Fresh green foliage, a beautiful vase, a shot of colour in your cushions and some wall art – it all works to enhance your space and give a room texture and interest.” Depending on the type of room and the mood you’re trying to create, adding elements of glass and metallics can add to the luxuriousness of the space, as can textiles like velvet or satin. Try Resene Proton, Resene Gold Dust or Resene Rose Gold from the Resene FX Metallics collection to add a bit of sparkle to your space through smaller painted objects and accessories. When it comes to choosing a dark paint colour for the exterior of your home, you can’t really pick a more striking hue than Resene Foundry – it pops against greenery because of the contrast in tones; and it will definitely make

your house stand out against others on your street. “Resene Lumbersider is a great choice of finish for older weatherboards as it will help to hide any imperfections, however if the timber is in good condition try using a semi-gloss finish such as Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss to really highlight your homes architecture,” says Annick. Dark exterior colours choices such as Resene Cod Grey and Resene Ironsand can do an amazingly effective job of camouflaging odd or unappealing architectural features.

“In most cases, an exterior paint job is a lot more cost effective than construction to correct an architectural eyesore,” explains Emma. Just be sure to do a proper job of prepping the surface first, no matter what colour you land on. Take care when choosing dark colours to choose the right paint. There are several Resene product options to help with fade and stress on the substrate from heat absorption. Outside, choosing a Resene CoolColour formula will look the same as a standard colour, but surface

heat will build up slower and to a significantly lower level than a 'not so cool' traditional colour. Additionally, to help the longevity of bold exterior paint colours, Resene Clearcoat UVS is specially formulated with UV absorbers to filter out harmful UV light and protect the underlying coloured coats. If you are looking for a truly ‘black-black’ look indoor, due to the nature of sunlight in our part of the world, many blacks can end up looking greyed. Resene All Black, Resene Blackjack and Resene Black are good blacks to try, but it’ll depend on the number and size of your windows and the direction your room faces for how the colour ends up looking when you put it on your walls. Be sure to try before you buy and pick up a Resene testpot in your chosen hue and test it out on an A2 size card, leaving a border around the edges. Then, move the card around the room at different times of the day and evening to check how it looks before you commit. If you want a deep black interior look, try adjusting lighting to see if you can bring out the depth of the black. If your first choice ends up looking grey, try a different hue in a deep undertone instead such as Resene Aubergine or Resene Dark Knight. Or lean into it and go for gorgeous grey like Resene Armadillo or Resene Tuna instead. These hues will all still bring the drama you’re after, but with a bit of extra character thanks to their unique undertones. HOW TO conquer the trickiest room in the house

Interior designer Liz Kerby, of LizzieKandCo, says people often underestimate bathroom renovations. “It’s the trickiest room in the house. They might be small, but they’re high-use areas and a lot happens behind the scenes. The process of creating bathrooms involves many different trades which all have to be in there one at a time,” she says.

he list of tradies that have the potential to get involved is extensive – builders, plumbers, waterproofers, electricians, tilers, painters, shower installers, cabinetmakers and stone installers – and each needs to be managed to minimise delays. OneRoof spoke to Kerby and other renovation and interior design experts to find out how to pull off a successful bathroom renovation. With a lot of unseen elements like pipework and waterproofing that cost a lot of money – and can cost even more if they’re not done properly – you don’t want to make mistakes. Set realistic expectations about what you can and cannot afford, says Shane, and be very clear about that number before you start. “Some people are enlightened enough to realise they can’t necessarily do a renovation themselves,” Kerby says. “It might be tempting to have a go at the plumbing or tiling, but

save yourself a lot of heartache and call in the experts from the start. Remember, they work better as a team.” Essential to a smooth process is a really good plan with scale drawings and elevations. It needs to show everything from the positioning of the electrical plugs to the shower door width, especially if you’re going to reconfigure the layout. A good designer can provide one for you. Kerby recommends employing a builder who specialises in smaller projects rather than entire houses. To simplify things, they can coordinate all the other trades to work to the same plan. There are many layers within the bathroom process and everything must be done to specific regulations. With a builder managing the project, you’ll be able to avoid missing these crucial steps. Create a cohesive look Once you have a plan, you can decide on the

style you’re after with the finishes, colours, fittings and accessories. Spend time with your designer, says Shane George, of Kitchens by Design. “Although it’s worth starting with catalogues, bring product home with you or go to the showroom to get a good feel for what you buy. If you find you don’t like the shape of a vanity, it might be too late once it’s on site.” Make sure your fixture choices marry with the rest of the house for a cohesive scheme. A plumbing merchant can guide you and put costeffective packages together. While pricing ranges wildly when it comes to bathroom finishes, Suzanne recommends that you always choose the best you can afford. Avoid cabinetry made from MDF that turns to cornflakes when it gets wet, and pick good quality tapware that won’t corrode or leak in a few years’ time. “Whatever you do, don’t skimp on quality,” agrees Kerby, as doing so may come back to bite

you. “Buy locally-made cabinets with good metal hinges and hardware.” To save time and money, don’t use tiles on floors as that requires waterproofing. And adhering to the existing layout also saves money on building work. Add a little eye candy To really knock the renovation out of the park, George suggests you find a focal point that you are drawn to when you walk into the room. “Make a feature with interesting materials, textures or colour that give some real oomph to the space. You can do this with different tapware. Some of the aged iron, bronzes and rose golds are just beautiful. Budget comes into it, but if you just choose interesting tapware that will work for you.” Creating a new bathroom can be tedious and expensive, but to make it as pain-free as possible, enjoy the planning phase at the beginning of the year, says Kerby. “You definitely don’t want to do it before Christmas when everyone’s busy which is a nightmare. Relax over summer, come back from holiday, do the plan, then get going before winter.” Suzanne Allen, of Suzanne Allen Design, adds: “If you’re doing a complete renovation, including demolishing the old bathroom and changing the electrical and plumbing services, allow at least four to six weeks. Then there are building inspections required to obtain consents, which lengthens the process even further. “If it’s just a makeover, such as replacing the vanity, toilet, plumbing fittings and some tiling and not moving anything, then allow a couple of weeks.” Be brave with colour If you’d like to dabble in a bold or moody look, bathrooms and ensuites are the ideal place to try out dark or vibrant paint colours or wallpapers.

Top tips to take away

If you’re investing the time, money and effort to do a complete renovation, why not make it one to remember? Try something courageous and it’ll surely be the talk of every guest you host. Contrary to the popular belief that they make spaces feel smaller, fully saturated shades are amazing for bathrooms. Try dramatic dark blues like Resene King Tide, Resene Indian Ink or Resene Twilight Zone or near black greys like Resene Suits or Resene Porter. While watery shades can seem like a natural fit for a bathroom, deep emerald greens like Resene Mother Nature, Resene Family Tree or Resene Atlas and rich terracottas like Resene Raging Bull, Resene Sunbaked or Resene Moccasin are a great bold alternatives. And don’t forget about the ‘fifth wall’. The ceiling is a perfect place to use bold colours instead of the typical white.

Spatial considerations • Spatial relationships between the toilet, vanity, shower and storage are important. It’s not ideal to have a loo in full view of the door. They must be a minimum 400mm from any wall or vanity. • Floating vanities work well in small spaces giving the allusion of more room. Consider a cavity slider rather than a hinged door in the entry and even across the shower opening. They can save a lot of space. • Think about where the toilet roll holder will be positioned so you don’t have to do awkward yoga stretches to reach it. Plan for a decent sized towel rail. If the budget is limited, singles look great, and low voltage options are available if they need to be close to the shower or bath. • Always allow a shower recess for storing shampoo bottles and so on. That needs to be in

Consider moving things from their original position if it makes for better flow. Plumbing and drainage can often be moved within a few metres without having to get a council permit.

If you want the room to feel bigger, try hanging a large mirror over the vanity. Not only will this create the illusion of more space, it will bounce light around the room. Windows can help to do the same thing.

Use light to mid-tones on the floor to open up the space visually and make it seem larger. If you’re opting for bamboo or timber over tile, try Resene Colorwood Whitewash or Resene Colorwood Natural to let the natural woodgrain steal the show.

Small changes can make a home more appealing, says Karen Warman, marketing manager at Resene, pointing out that homeowners don’t need to break the bank when decorating. “Paint and wallpaper are some of most versatile tools available to homeowners,” she says. OneRoof asked Warman what tips she would give Kiwis who are looking to impress for less. Here are her top suggestions for small yet effective decorative touches that cost around or under $100: 1. Paint your front door. “A freshly painted front door will project a warm welcome to friends and family and if you’re a colour fan, use this opportunity to make a stand-out style statement,” says Warman.
