e are lucky to have an enthusiastic and vibrant group of arty people in our midst, for Whangārei is in for a treat this month. They are bringing us our first Fringe Festival and it has been no easy task. Hayley Clark had been sitting on the idea a while when she pitched it to colleagues last year and was delighted to discover they were just as keen as she was to see it come to fruition. Together they have been chipping away to bring us a huge range of entertainment and activities, both homegrown and from around the country. For two weeks, the streets of Whangarei and various venues will come alive as they become the platform for showcasing both up-and-coming and more renown talent, whether it’s singing, dancing, acrobats, acting, comedy, art – anything creative! There are also interactive workshops and activities for locals to take part in. Understandably, the idea of a Fringe Festival is new to many so locals don’t quite know what we’re

group of locals from the arts community have collaborated to bring Whangarei its first Fringe Festival and the exciting line-up has snow-balled from when Hayley Clark pitched the idea last year. “After many sleepless nights and coffeefuelled days, we were ecstatic to release our Fringe Programme. We have been, quite literally, overwhelmed by the number of amazing events and activities registered for the first official Fringe Festival in Whangarei, and can't wait to showcase them to the city.” A 26-page programme outlines the eclectic line-up of 88 creative events around the city including theatre, comedy, poetry, music, dance, circus, drag, visual and digital arts, workshops and creative activities. buskers’ festival will take place around the Hatea Loop Walkway with activities, stalls and markets. Hayley formed a discussion group late last year with various Whangarei art organisations to see if there was interest in staging a Fringe Festival. Once the event gained momentum this year thanks to support from Creative New Zealand (CNZ), along with further funding from the Whangarei District Council (WDC) community fund, the organising team of Hayley, Georgia May-Russ, Laurel Devenie, Oliver Scripps, Shannon Winn, Kaitlin Scott and Mary de Ruyter set to work. The team were delighted with the funding saying it cultivates and supports the development of what they hope to be an annual event. Says Georgia-May: “The CNZ support means that the festival is actually possible and is an acknowledgement of the amount of work and preparation that goes into this - the administration and management, design work, liaising with artists and venues, promotion costs, ticketing and box office fees, volunteer coordination and more. It is a huge job and we are really stoked to have some excellent support and people on board.”

Beauty

Prep, prime and plumpen your way to a perfect pout Whether you’re puckering up for a selfie or heading off for a big night out, if you want to have desirably kissable lips then some prep work will pay off.

1

Exfoliate Okay, scrubbing your lips isn’t that glamorous sounding, but then chapped lips aren’t that good looking either. As your first step to inducing lip envy, best banish dry bits with a little light exfoliation. Gently rub over with a lip scrub and wipe or rinse off any residues, before applying a moisturising lip balm. If you’re skint you can make your own scrub with a sugar and olive oil mix or even just use a clean warm flannel. To keep things smooth, avoid sun and wind burn and excessive chewing or licking of the lips.

2

Mask An overnight lip mask allows you to really layer on some heavyweight hydration -- when no-one is looking. This means you can extend your chosen balm or specialist mask beyond the lips themselves to take in the lip contour area to fill out any fine lines that are forming. By morning the product should have soaked in, leaving your lips soft and fresh.

3

Hydrate A lip balm is your best friend. Keep one handy and use it regularly, at least

each morning and evening. This will ensure your lips are getting a top-up of moisture so you can face the day without a cracked smile and then rest easy with or without the fairytale awakening of love’s true kiss. Beeswax has long been a favourite ingredient, but vegans will want to skip this. There are plenty of plant-based choices out there, including good inexpensive buys.

4

Multi-task Tinted lip balms are an ideal way to soak in some moisture while also adding a little colour (and sometimes flavour) to your look. It is the perfect starter product for mini makeup fans and a great easy option for grown-ups. A tinted balm saves getting heavy handed with a more highly pigmented lipstick and is generally cheaper too.

5

Plumpen The fastest way to pump up the volume is to use a lip plumping product, which gives a boost to the micro-circulation of the lips through ingredients such as capsicum, making them look and feel fuller. Other variations smooth the surface and optically

• Dermaneedling • Hair Removal IPL • Makeup • Facials • Manicures • Body Treatment/Massage • Waxing • Eye Works • Anti-Aging Treatments

enhance appearance due to reflective glossy finishes. Injectable fillers are a more permanent plumping option, but best choose your practitioner carefully.

6

Prepare If you are looking to apply lipstick to show off all your preparation work, then the secret to lasting success is, like all good paint jobs, down to the primer coat. Choose something that smooths, moistens and refines lips to ensure colour adheres.

7

Reward All that diligent self-care deserves a little celebration, so why not seek out a special looking lipstick to celebrate. Considered the entry level to luxury, a flash lippy in a smart case from a prestige brand is an affordable indulgence, good for giving or receiving. Or step it up with a lip set.

Discover Arbonne’s new

VEGAN SKINCARE COLLECTION I ntroducing Arbonne’s AgeWell Trifecta. Formulated using a range of dermatologist favourites, this unique trifecta of ingredients work to deliver more youthful looking skin with a vibrant glow.

At the heart of the trifecta is the latest must-have ingredient in skincare – a plant-based alternative to retinol called Bakuchiol (pronounced “buh-koo-cheeall”).

Completing the AgeWell Trifecta is Arbonne’s Sustainable Plant Stem Cell Extract, which helps skin to look more vibrant and improves firmness. This progressive ingredient is from natural origins, but scientifically generated to use less water. This harmony of three ingredients works to target visible signs of ageing, without being harsh to skin- that’s the power of the AgeWell Trifecta. The new AgeWell range from Arbonne is made up of eight gorgeous products including a Silky Cleanser, Refreshing Toning Mist, Collagen Nurturing Serum, Enriching Eye Cream, Moisture Restoring Cream, Moisture Restoring Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 15, Intense Repairing Night Cream and Firming Neck Cream. For a powerful skin routine follow these steps:

10 | SAVVY

Customise your moisturiser for the day. Apply the AgeWell Moisture Restoring Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 15. This multipurpose formula provides critical moisture to the skin to hydrate, smooth and firm its appearance while also protecting against UVA / UVB rays. Or

So, what is Bakuchiol? It can help to target the look of wrinkles and uneven skin tone, without retinol’s harsh effects. Compared to retinol it can be better tolerated on skin, is gentle enough to be used morning and night and is stable with other skincare ingredients, plus it is derived from plants! The AgeWell Trifecta also includes another top dermatologist ingredient: Vitamin C, which helps support collagen by providing moisture. Vitamin C can be difficult to stabilse with retinol, and shouldn’t be used at the same time, but with Bakuchiol and stabilised Vitamin C you can finally achieve the benefits of both ingredients at once.

Step 5:

Apply AgeWell Moisture Restoring Cream with 0.5% Bakuchiol. The go-to, daily plant-powered cream helps replenish the skin’s natural moisture barrier, leaving it feeling soft and smooth. Step 6:

Step 1: Use the AgeWell Silky Cleanser with Vegan Surfactants morning and night to sweep away impurities helping skin to feel soft, smooth and supple. Step 2: Use the AgeWell Refreshing Toning Mist with Vitamin B3 morning and night. The non-drying, alcohol-free spray instantly refreshes the skin’s look and feel by delivering nourishing hydration. Step 3: Apply AgeWell Collagen Nurturing Serum with 2% Bakuchiol morning and night. This silky concentrated serum helps nurture skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, helping skin appear even-toned, smooth and firm. Step 4: Gently apply the AgeWell Enriching Eye Cream with Caffeine + Bakuchiol to the eye area. The enriching formula reduces the appearance of the key signs of ageing around the eye area such as puffiness, fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles.

Apply AgeWell Intense Repairing Night Cream with 2% Bakuchiol to enhance your skin’s nightly reparative cycle with intense moisture, so you can wake-up feeling glowing. Step 7: Enhance your skin routine with the AgeWell Firming Neck Cream with 0.5% Bakuchiol. By targeting the appearance of wrinkles in fragile skin like your neck, décolletage and jawline, the skin appears redefined as it regains a smoother, toned and youthful appearance. THE 101on

Laser Hair Removal Whether you're a seasoned veteran looking to treat your next area, or you're a complete hair removal newbie — we're here for you! So how does it work? Will it work for you? When will you see results? And what's with the no tanning policy? You've got the questions, the team at Caci have the answers. Why Caci? Why choose Caci? Well... • They’re the originals! It was Caci who first brought laser hair removal to New Zealand when they opened their first clinic in 1994. The team have performed over 276,000 treatments over 25 years — they know their stuff. You're in safe hands. • Caci use a Diode Laser in all clinics — fast, effective and less pain.

• You'll be hair-free, guaranteed. It’s Caci’s priority to ensure you get the best results possible. On their laser hair removal membership, Caci offer an exclusive guarantee. You can find out if you’re eligible during a free consultation. • Pay for your treatments in a way that suits you! Weekly, fortnightly or monthly instalments.

• Joining Caci’s Freedom membership gets you exclusive member-only benefits. Enjoy member prices, free facials, discounts on skincare and beauty therapy + access to our payment plan!

Now onto the logistics... How does it work? Light from the laser is passed onto the treatment area, where it is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shift and follicle. This generates heat, which loosens the hair and disables the cells involved in growing your hair - preventing future hairs from forming. At Caci the team are proud to offer hair removal with a Diode Laser — it's fast, can treat a wide range of hair and skin tones plus it also has a cooling tip which means less pain! One of the best parts about the Diode laser is that you do not need to have any hair regrowth when you come in for treatment — they actually need the treatment area to be clean-shaven! This is great, especially for the upper lip, chin and face. Will it work for me? You’ll see the best results with dark hair — as the treatment is targeting the hair pigment. Some underlying medical conditions or medications may exclude you from treatment as they can make the result harder to predict. However, we recommend going in for a free consultation so the Caci team can assess your suitability. You may be able to treat some areas but not others depending on the hair pigment. How many treatments will I need? For best results, Caci recommend eight treatments, 5-6 weeks apart. Caci’s membership is called Freedom — it's just like a gym membership, but for working off that unwanted hair! The team will put together a treatment schedule and payment plan too, so you can pay off your treatment over 12 months in weekly, fortnightly or monthly instalments. Plus you get the exclusive member-only benefits as mentioned above! When will I start to see results? Within 1-2 weeks following your treatment, some hairs may begin to fall out and then after your second or third treatment, you may start to see results. Keep in mind that everybody is different and results will vary. Caci’s team will recommend the best treatment

schedule for you to treat your hair in the Anagen 'growing' phase to get the best results. Does it hurt? Most people describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. Caci pride themselves on performing the treatments quickly and safely, so it is over in no time! I have PCOS, can I still receive laser hair removal? Many of Caci’s customers with PCOS achieve excellent results from laser hair removal treatment, and it can significantly improve their self-confidence. Although the results for many customers can be successful, and often life changing, they will need to continue to have the treatments on a regular basis to maintain a reduction in hair growth. As an existing medical condition like PCOS affects the body’s hair growth, it’s not possible to guarantee a result, as increased hair growth may continue in spite of regular laser hair removal treatments. Can I tan in between appointments? Unfortunately yes, you need to avoid tanning in the sun or fake tanning (including sunbeds and artificial tanning products), in the area where you are having laser hair removal. This is because tanning darkens the skin, making it harder for the laser to distinguish between the pigment in skin and the pigment in your hair. The bottom line is it can disrupt your treatment cycle and make your results less effective, so it’s best to avoid tanning for the duration of your treatments. If you're ever unsure—ask the Caci team! Want to learn more? For a personalised quote, we recommend popping in for that free consultation with the team at Caci Whangarei, 14 Clyde St, 09 438 1942, caci.co.nz SAVVY | 11

Revamp your spring fitness routine With warmer weather on the way, it’s time to ditch what doesn’t work and revamp your workout!

T

he days are getting longer, and we can begin to switch out our woolly jumpers for lighter clothing. This can be daunting if you’re not really feeling in shape and on top of your fitness game. For most women, they wish to add shape and firmness to their body and get rid of the jiggly bits. To do this takes two things (you can’t just try to lose weight). What you want is body recomposition which means you need to reduce body fat and build and tone muscle tissue. If you’re looking for a bit of motivation to help you get back on track towards your fitness goals, I’ve got some tips for you. Focus on building health first and foremost - The mindset that many women have when it comes to getting a feel-good body they love is to reduce calories and often those calories don’t come from the best sources. Then do as much exercise as possible to burn more calories. When we try this approach and the weight doesn’t budge, we say… “Ah, I just need to sneak another hour in each week.” or “I just need to cut back on the calories even more.” or this is the worst, “I’m obviously not trying hard enough.” So, we try to beat our metabolism into submission where we believe that the more dieting and cardio we do, we will end up with that body we want. A much more successful approach is to: 1. Train with resistance (weight) to get stronger each week and month. For most women to get the body they want they will need more toned muscle than they think. Just exercising to burn calories doesn’t do this and it can lead to muscle tissue loss and a body that is ‘skinny fat’.

BY CAROLYN HANSEN ANYTIME FITNESS, WHANGAREI To get great results, at least three quarters of your training should be spent doing resistance (strengthening) type exercise. If there is time and energy left over that is when you can add some extra cardio or recreational activity that makes for an active lifestyle. Also, spend less time doing fluff exercises that produce very little results. For example, things that work only one muscle group at a time with lots of light repetitions. The majority of your exercise program should be made up of multi joint compound exercises that work big muscle groups to produce the best results. Things like squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, pull-ups along with some single leg work like split squats or weighted step ups. 2. Nourishing your body in an optimum way by focusing on the nutrients in and quality of the food rather than calories. A simple concept is - just eat real food! This means avoiding as much processed and packaged stuff as possible. The good news is there’s no need to calorie count when you eat this way, just focus on making sure each of your meals consist of quality protein, veggies, healthy carbs and healthy fats. Make Small Changes Too often people think they need to completely overhaul their lifestyle to see results. Not so, small changes can lead to big results because they are more sustainable in the long run. Take a look at where you can make any improvements in your routine. Can you get to the gym early in the morning 1-2 times a week? Can you do an hour of meal prep on a Sunday to give you a head start for the week ahead? Can you cut your portions down by 20 per cent? Making these small and simple changes will add up and you will be on your way to being summer-ready in no time.

ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGY

– SMART PHONES WITH THE EYE CENTRE - PRIMECARE

There is a large range of computerised or electronic equipment that can help you with low vision.

O

ne of the most common problems that many blind and visually-impaired people experience is their day-to-day challenge, in coping with their impairment. Equipment such as Braille, reading glasses, or a walking stick are just some of the few things that help visually-impaired people get along with their lives. With the advancement of technology, a iPhone or Android smartphone have a range of built-in functions, and offer a range of apps (programmes), that are useful for people with low vision. For example, some smartphones have a voice recognition system that allows a user to check the weather, their email or their calendar without having to navigate a series of icons or buttons. Some apps use your device’s camera and

light source to magnify and illuminate text. This is a less expensive (although less powerful) alternative to an electronic magnifier. Other apps provide voice-guided directions for you as you travel; for example, street names. If you have a smartphone, browse your Apple or Android app store online to find out about the pricing and availability of these apps. New products are constantly being developed, and existing products improved. A useful website to visit is: https://www. applevis.com/. This site has starting guides on how to get voiceover and set up iPhone and Android phones. Many apps are free such as: Color ID. It uses the iPhone camera, to identify and speak colour names aloud. It offers a setting for basic colours, such as “pale green” or more advanced colours such as “strong greenish yellow.” TapTapSee, is designed to help the blind and visually-impaired identify objects they encounter in their daily lives. Simply double tap the screen to take a photo of anything, at any angle, and hear the app speak the identification. For example it can tell you which is cottage cheese and which is sour cream.

Women in Business

EMILY HENDERSON

Respectful & relentless You might have noticed a ‘new’ face around town recently, sharing the big red and white hoardings with the Prime Minister.

S

he’s Emily Henderson, successful barrister and advocate for criminal law reform and experienced in the demands and challenges of being a part of one of Whangarei’s leading law firms. Emily is the mother of four teenagers and is married to fellow lawyer Thomas Biss. Daughter of Stuart and Patsy Henderson, Emily was born in Wellington but moved North with her family when she was seven. She attended Kaurihohore School then Tikipunga High before embarking on her legal studies at Auckland University. Emily became interested in law reform at an early age and credits her mother, Patsy for this. “Mum was an experts on child witnesses in the ‘1980s, so I had early exposure to the difficulties child witnesses had

in court. There were long delays in the trial process, hours of stressful questioning with complicated language, not to mention heavy-handed leading questions.” Emily pursued her interest in this area of the law. She obtained her PhD at Cambridge in 2000, where she identified commonalities in the adversarial legal systems in the UK, Australia and New Zealand which often led to poor and damaging outcomes for child witnesses. In 2013 Emily was the first woman, and first working lawyer (as opposed to an academic), to be awarded the NZ Law Foundation’s prestigious International Research Fellowship. Her study of the judge-led reforms in the UK resulted in the publication of seven papers in top legal journals and a further accolade, the highly respected International Investigative Interviewing Research Group’s Academic Excellence Award.

BY DENISE JELICICH

Her work has been cited by the British and Scottish Home Offices and she is regarded as one of the leading authorities on trial reform for child and vulnerable witnesses. Another of Emily Henderson’s achievements was her role in initiating the Whangarei Child Witness Protocols Pilot in 2014 with a local District Court Judge. The protocols were a set of simple changes to trial practice. These changes included, things like not keeping child witnesses waiting for hours on the day of a trial, having a child–friendly space for them to wait in, and identifying the worst types of cross-examination questions so that judges could stop them being asked of child witnesses. This work led in 2015 to Emily joining a committee established by Chief District Court Judge Doogue which developed the Whangarei Child Witness Protocols into the Whangarei and Auckland Sexual Violence Courts. Emily also designed and taught on the judicial training programme that ran alongside the Court, and the later version for lawyers as well. So what is Emily Henderson’s recipe for success? “Never think that you have to accept the status quo, because there is almost always a way to change things, even for huge problems like aspects of the legal system. I’ve spent my life working out how to translate big academic ideas into real grassroots change and I think the key is taking the time to fully understand the system, identifying the specific problems while also respecting its values. You have to be unstoppable. Respectful but relentless, that’s the key.”

Never think that you have to accept the status quo, because there is almost always a way to change things ...

Bringing a new cat or kitten home Every year, thousands of cats and kittens come into SPCA centres nationwide. All of them have an individual story to tell and all of them deserve a second chance at life.

W

e are fast-approaching kitten season as the warmer weather sets in. The breeding season is typically from October through to April. It can be extremely exciting when bringing your new fur baby home. There are some things to keep in mind, however. One struggle some people find after adopting a kitten or cat, is settling their latest family member into their new home. It’s a huge adjustment period for a cat or kitten as they are typically very territorial. If you’ve got other animals or even children in the house it’s definitely a good idea to create a space that they can call their own for the first few days or weeks.

Remember to offer them lots of love and attention and the love they will show in the long run will be totally worth it. Here are top tips to settle your new cat or kitten: 1. Fill a litter box with about 5cm of litter and place it in a room that your cat can use undisturbed - they are very private creatures. 2. Set up food and water bowls away from their litter tray, because you wouldn’t want to eat your dinner in the bathroom, would you? 3. Try leaving the cat carrier that you took them home in in the space so that your cat has a little safe haven they can hide in. 4. Provide your cat with a scratching post that is tall enough for them to extend themselves to scratch. Encourage them to use it by sprinkling catnip or dangling a toy at the top.

5. Look for holes in the walls that a kitten could easily escape into. The last thing you want to be doing is pulling off the Gib board to rescue a tiny, scared runaway! 6. Remind children of ground rules around your new cat or kitten. Remind them not to startle him or her and keep the door shut until they are settled. 7. It may take a week or two for your cat to get adjusted. Just be patient and let him or her come to you. 8. As your cat adjusts, he or she will show signs of wanting to explore outside of their safe haven. Make sure pets or other family members do not startle them as they explore this new territory.

Adopt a Kitten & change a life! There are numerous stray kittens around Northland and the Whangarei SPCA and their volunteers do a fantastic job of fostering beautiful kittens ready for homes. Adopting a rescue is rewarding, not just for them but for you!

Fishing tips & tales The scallop season opening certainly increased the number of boats going out; it appears there are plenty of scallops but they are a bit skinny at the moment - their condition will improve as the season continues. Fishing is good! The outer harbour is fishing well with many fisho’s getting limit bags of snapper, mostly under 40cm but one recent catch included several nice fish up to 45cm. The last hour of incoming tide has been the most productive. Angus has been experiencing very good kahawai fishing off the shore along Ruakaka Beach and is regularly catching good numbers of big fish surfcasting using bait. Outside, the succulent terakihi are on the bite. It is often worth putting down another line with big hooks and big baits as occasionally big snapper can be caught and, if you are very lucky, a small hāpuku. Also, it can be worth putting a softbait down just off the bottom. Even left unattended, boat movement will give it some action and potentially catch a John Dory as they are quite often caught on terakihi grounds. The Hen and Chicks are well worth a try. I’ve had a few reports of some very good snapper catches by casting big unweighted baits into the wash in close around these islands. Summer is coming, the fish are biting - yahoo! Now, a little bit less wind PLEASE! – John Vowless

WITH JOHN VOWLESS (WHANGAREI) & KURT NASH AND REEF O’DONNELL (@FARNORTHKINGS) Hey everyone. We managed to go for a fish last week and headed to a reef out in the bay hoping for some kingfish and snapper. Fishing was quite slow for a while and we had lots of barracuda taking our soft baits and jigs so decided to switch to bait and small hooks as there are plenty of reef fish to catch on reefs around the bay, such as your pink maomao, scorpionfish/granddaddy hapuka and golden snapper. All of these fish have really white flaky delicious flesh. They are easy to catch; all you need is a few small hooks and small baits, drop it down to the bottom and, most of the time, you catch two or more on one drop, there’s that many of them down on the reefs. Also, I (Reef) caught one kingfish on the small hooks and bait. I hooked a small reef fish and started to wind it up from 60m and, about halfway up, it got really heavy. Then my little reel started screaming. We thought it was another barracuda and, as the fight went on, then we started thinking it was a kingfish as it had

WHY YOU REALLY DON’T NEED A HALL PASS BY LAURA HEYNIKE

Hallways are a space that is often forgotten about in a home.

A

means to get from one room to another. Remember though that you start at the “first impressions” entrance, then make your way through the hallway threshold before arriving at the heart of the home; your kitchen or lounge area. So how can we embrace the humble hallway instead of just passing through it?

OPEN IT UP The first thing I look at is whether or not the hallway is warranted or not (load bearing dependent). In my own home we have an old country hallway to the back courtyard, but by removing the hallway we can make our kitchen much larger and even fit in an island. If you are strapped for space this could be a game changer; just leave your hallways to the sleeping areas rather than the living. This won’t be an option for all homes, but when designing a new build just have in mind the style of living that you want for your floor plan.

Pocketspace Interiors director Laura Heynike.

DECORATE IT Have some fun with interior design and try your hand at some amazing hallway wallpaper. You don’t have to go with the most outrageous print in town, especially if you are pairing it with artwork or photographs. A subtle linear texture that will add some interest in a boring space will work a treat. If the space feels short in height, run the pattern vertically, which will elongate the perception of height. If you want to elongate the length or width of the hallway, run it horizontal and your eye will follow the lines all the way down the hallway. Some robust wallpapers are great for family homes too as children can get rough when they find the smallest space in the home to play in!

Lighting will also help brighten the hallway with lower lighting accents located above the floor and, with the ceiling, if you have a statement piece of art or photo series, how about looking at a directional light fitting that will highlight this hero piece rather than a generic light-wash scheme that simply illuminates for the sake of it. A hallway doesn’t just need to be a utilitarian exit route, and by emphasising this space by using it as a design feature it is a simple way to maximise storage but also make your space interesting. We have also designed fold-down desks for hallways, or converted storage cupboards into a desk nook. This instantly adds dual functionality to a space that is always left behind.

Spring into Sleep

As we welcome in Spring, the change in seasons can bring with it a number of causes for disrupted sleep…

✔ Keep it cool It’s best to draw your core body temperature down a few degrees before bed, as our best sleeps happen at 18-22 degrees Celsius. Water is a great cooling agent, so if you like to shower before bed – you’re helping your sleep already.

T

✔ Nail your naps A little napping can go a long way and surprisingly enough, the shorter the better. Don’t take it from us, the folks at NASA have put it to the test on plenty of their long-haul pilots. A nap of just 26 minutes showed an impressive increase in alertness and job-performance!

he extra hours of daylight can have a detrimental effect on our ability to go to sleep, stay asleep and establish a regular pattern. Dreaded hayfever season rears its unwanted head and as the mercury climbs higher, the duvet ends up on the floor as we try to keep ourselves comfortable. With sleep playing a critical part in keeping our immunity, mental and physical health top-notch – it’s a good idea to catch all the shut-eye we can. No one's a stranger to a restless night. It only takes a depleted sleep to leave you feeling groggy, slow and just not quite your best self. It's time to repay your sleep debts - and we have some hot tips to help you do just that. ✔ Stick to schedule Be sure to tuck in at a similar time every night and awaken at a similar time every day. Try not to let your schedule slip too much on the weekend either. Your body likes consistency – so keep that circadian rhythm in check!

✔ Join the dark side Darkness helps the release of the hormone melatonin – that special substance that gets us snoozin’. Avoid screens, dim the lights and draw the curtains an hour before you hop into bed.

✔ Get a comfortable bed, mattress and pillow Hotels aren’t the only place you catch a luxurious night’s sleep. Plenty of studies have shown a revamp of your own bed and bedding can improve your sleep quality up to 60 per cent. It’s recommended to upgrade your bed every 7 – 10 years, not only to ensure your bed is still in optimal condition, but so you can be fitted to a bed that suits each stage of your lifecycle. The support you need at 40 can be very different to the support you need at 50. But... before you rush home to test your newfound sleep knowledge, remember to ease into it. It’s best to introduce one tip at a time, so you’re not adding to your mental load by worrying that your night time routine is perfectly in order.

Hubands Energy

– Northland’s very own National Award-Winning Solar Company! There are a lot of fantastic businesses in Northland that employ some incredible people and we love this place.

W

e’ve been in business in Northland for over 38 years and we owe a lot of our success to the wonderful people we work with, and work for. Our business model has evolved over that time, from an electrical company, to an appliance retailer, to then shift focus to energy efficiency solutions through heat pumps, solar and battery systems. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have leaders who are constantly looking over the horizon to find the best new technologies and solutions that are coming to the market. One such solar technology, that was revolutionary when it came to market in 2006, was Enphase microinverters. Enphase microinverters are designed in California, with a research and development department based in Christchurch. What sets this solution apart from others is that they are low voltage inverters, so are very safe, unlike your typical string inverter that can have dangerous high-voltage DC running across your roof. Enphase also has an advanced online reporting system called Enlighten that gives you a complete picture, at a solar panel-level, of your household power consumption data.

Recently we were honoured to receive the Enphase New Zealand Installer of the Year Award for 2019/2020. This award recognises our business as one of Enphase’s most trusted and successful installer partners, consistently displaying excellence in customer service, sales and installations. Enphase Energy Asia Pacific General Manager, Wilf Johnston, had this to say about the award: “There is no doubt that Hubands Energy is an example of the highest levels of solar professionalism and sets the bar for its industry peers. Congratulations on your success as an Enphase Installer of the Year. It is an honour to work with partners like you who display such passion for outstanding customer outcomes, the solar industry, and Enphase technology.” This award is especially meaningful to our business as we hold customer satisfaction as our highest level of achievement.

In fact, where most companies celebrate the number of sales they get, we have only one internal award and that is for recognition of the most customer compliments throughout the year. This is the backbone of our business and what has driven our success to where we now have a team of over 40 staff. A solar and battery system is a significant investment, which should be designed to last a long time and installed by a company that will be around to support you in the future. We have a proven track record for only using high-quality equipment and we don’t cut corners. We’ve been here for almost 40 years and plan on being here for a lot longer. We’re not going to take your money and run off to Bali for a holiday! We are here, we’re local and we’re all about the best solutions, using the best technologies at the best prices. If you’re thinking about installing a solar energy system, then talk to us now.

"There is no doubt that Hubands Energy is an example of the highest levels of solar professionalism and sets the bar for its industry peers."

Northland’s Solar Specialists We believe all Northlanders should experience low or no power bills, utilising our best source of re renewable energy to reduce their power costs both now and in the future.

Bathroom Lighting: A Foolproof Guide to Getting it Right HOUZZ.CO.NZ

Nail your bathroom lighting scheme first time around with these practical tips from experts in the field.

G

ood lighting is an essential part of any successful room design, and the bathroom is no exception. Here, three experts share their top tips for lighting your bathroom right – from practical task lighting to those beautiful finishing touches. TYPES OF LIGHTING YOU NEED IN A BATHROOM “The number one thing you need in a bathroom is shadow-free task lighting at the mirror,” says Adele Locke, director of MINT Lighting Design. “So many of us live in homes with poor bathroom lighting, and we all know how frustrating it is to find something’s been missed in the shaving or make-up process when we’re out. “The second layer of lighting you need is subtle, ambient lighting for using the bathroom for short visits.

“A night light is an excellent thing to include too. And, depending on the style of your bathroom, you may also need a decorative layer of lighting for luxuriating in the bath,” says Locke. Accent lighting is another optional extra you may want to consider if budget permits, says Genevieve Wild, design director at Wildly Illuminating. “It allows you to highlight specific features in the bathroom and will add character and personality to the space.” For general lighting, consider a three-in-one exhaust fan with heating and lighting, says Jess Paladino, lighting designer at Beacon Lighting. “They are a great option for providing general illumination as well as for keeping the bathroom well-ventilated and warm on cold days. For low ceilings that measure 2.7 to three metres, I’d suggest flush mounts or even track lighting,” she says. WHERE TO PUT IT “Ambient lighting is most effective when it’s located close to the walls. This allows for great reflectance of light within the space, keeping it bright end avoiding a ‘cave-like’ feel, which is the classic effect you get with four ceiling downlights in a grid pattern, where the floor is lit and the walls are dark,” says Wild.

“Install accent lighting on a larger wall, over the bath or in a corner next to the basin in a splash-free zone – it really is the icing on the cake. Be sure that wiring rules are met to ensure safety,” she says. “Place wall lights on either side of the mirror if it’s not flush, above the mirror, or install a mirror with a built-in LED light,” says Paladino. “Consider adding LED strip lighting in shower nooks and under the vanity,” she adds. THINGS TO CONSIDER Locke says: • Make sure there is light between your face and the mirror when you’re at the vanity. Too many bathrooms end up with lights in the middle of the ceiling, and I’m yet to see a bathroom with anything vital in the centre of the room. • When you’re choosing decorative lighting, make sure it is IP-rated and safe for a damp/wet environment. • Keep an eye on glare and brightness. We rarely see dimming in bathrooms and as it’s a room we all use a few times a day, making sure it’s always comfortable is important. • Showers that are behind nib walls or tucked into corners need to be lit – you may not want a spotlight in there, but you also don’t want dark corners. Paladino says: • When selecting bathroom lighting, consider the ceiling height, the other finishes in the room, the style of your home and the purpose of the light fitting. • Heating and fans are also important in a bathroom, so if they’re not integrated into your ceiling light, how else will you fit them in – underfloor heating or a heated towel rack?

Therapy for your home BY TRACEY HARVEY, FRAZERHURST

Our introverted and cocooned lifestyles during lockdown have led many of us to review our homes and whether they are proving to be the refuge of calm that many crave or the hub of inspiration that keeps some of us going.

Perhaps you feel like it is all getting a bit fussy and cluttered? Consider sending the curtains and drapes off to the local charity and replacing them with some clean and calm Weathermaster roller blinds. You will be amazed at how much more spacious your home will feel. The sunscreen and light filtering fabrics will become a favourite this summer.

It appears that our homes ‘have been weighed, have been measured and have been found wanting’. The easiest and least disruptive way to make an impact is to change the window furnishings.

Possibly, working from home has meant you need to conjure up your own inspiration and the neutral blinds against the neutral walls of the ‘Scandi’ era is no longer giving you a good vibe? The Pantone colour institute has the answer: “The Spring/Summer 2021 New York Color Palette: Shades illustrative of nature coupled with new core classics come together to create a palette inspiring ingenuity and inventiveness.” In Layman’s terms; The colours for the coming season are bright and joyful. The trend for interiors is following the same format. Beautiful colours of nature from Sunsets to Surf and contemporary botanicals.

Explore our website: www.frazerhurst.co.nz and Trends, page 3: ‘Time to spring into some extra cleaning’. Call into our Showroom at 146 Lower Dent St, down by the Town Basin. We look forward to meeting you and chatting about your options.

WANT TO FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR HOME AGAIN?

Maybe the vertical blinds that were in the house when you bought it have finally annoyed you for the last time with their broken chains and clacking end weights? Why not replace them with a thoroughly modern linen look sheer that gives you privacy and sun-screening as well as romance and elegance without the fuss.

At one time or another, most of us have experienced the feeling of looking around our home and no longer being satisfied or inspired by its interior... Changing your window treatments is a simple move that can completely transform the look of your space. There are truly endless options. Call into Frazerhurst for a home therapy session this spring and find the best knowledge, ideas and product recommendations to refresh your home.

the darker aluminium joinery and rich tones in the landscaping and worked a treat. Having the confidence to specify something with a bit of personality was justified by improving and enhancing its immediate surroundings.

FIVE WAYS to turn a dour doorway into a grand entrance BY LAURA HEYNIKE First impressions count. When I’ve been asked to advise a homeowner on their interior design the first thing I study isn’t the inside of the house, but the outside. The journey from front gate to the front door is crucial. It is the first - and last - thing a visitor or potential buyer sees, and is a first glimpse of what lies beyond. So how do you make an entrance that makes a difference? Here are the five areas you need to cover.

1. THE FRONT DOOR Your front door is the frames to your home and either sings to the world or silently exists. There is no right or wrong way to go with door selection, but it is an easy to personalise home improvement that can welcome visitors with an enthusiastic smile. Kiwis are spoilt for choice when it comes to exterior doors, from aluminium profiles that can be powder coated to bespoke wooden villa doors with commissioned glass inserts. I once specified a bright yellow door because it was my clients favourite colour. The bright yellow drew out

2. LIGHTING Lighting your front entrance both inside and out is a really important step that is often left to the bare minimum. When guests arrive for dinner, you want to create an ambient experience. Try lighting the pathway with some trustworthy solar lights, or recessing step lights on the deck risers for a polished welcoming feel. An ambient experience can also be achieved by lighting specific plants with up lighting, this will make your landscaping impressive too. The interior lights at your entrance is an opportunity that cannot be missed, it will get the “aha” moment from your guest. When hanging a pendant light, make sure it is hung at the right height. This will set the style tone for the rest of the home and architecture to achieve maximum style consistency. 3. PERSONALITY It is odd to think that a front entrance can have a personality, but if you look at it as an opportunity to make a mark then you might get quite excited by the possibilities.

If you have a rustic villa, think about how you can stylise plants. Instead of the token two symmetrical pot layout, perhaps curate a collection of planted baskets paired with a weathered copper watering can. Flooring is also an opportunity to bring to life an architectural motif, or it could simply be a pattern that you enjoy. Instantly you have styled a front entrance with a clear understanding of your taste. 4. MAINTENANCE Looking after the outside of your entrance before the inside brings maintenance into high priority. Install fresh seals around the windows, give the door and frames a decent lick of paint, clear out the cobwebs and declutter - you don’t want your entrance becoming a shoe graveyard. If you prefer a low-key look with your entrance, making sure these things are well accommodated for, paired with decent landscaping, will help towards the overall look and feel of a home, as well as help with resell value. 5. FURNITURE The furniture selection for your main entrance has a significant impact. Think about your lifestyle and the key pieces that you need to reflect and organise. For those with children, a bench for shoes is a great hack, as are a few lower placed hooks for schoolbags and coats. To make a small entrance a bit larger, try a slim console table with a round mirror to reflect the light, this will make traditionally small entrance a bit larger. To create an opposite effect, use artwork with dynamic lines or wallpaper. The mirror will pick this up and distribute colour or pattern throughout the space creating an entrance that is thoughtfully designed and impressive.
