“Ourfamiliesar thatwasprobablythebigges Olivia,39.
Theyeventuallymovedintogetherhaving Shanon’sdaughters-Keiarna,20,andJordyn, 16,fromapreviousmarriage,everyotherweek, beforetheirowndaughterKahutia,nowfour, joinedthefamily.Afteranidyllicholidaytothe BayofIslands,Shanonplottedaconsequent engagementproposalthere.
“Shanonhadsaiditwasaculturalwork triptoWaitangiandthattheycouldtake partnersbutitturnedoutitwasjustus,and hisbosswasinonit,”tellsOlivia.“We’dspent alovelyafternoonsippingcocktailswith nibblesatZaneGrey’s(RestaurantandBar) and,thatevening,weresittingonaloungerat theendofthepierwithallthelightsonand heproposed.”
TheyreturnedtoChristchurchtobegin planningtheirwedding.However,bothfrom largefamilies,Oliviastruggledwiththeideaofa traditionalwedding.
“It’sneverbeenabigdreamofmine.My brotherandsisterbothhadthebiglavish wedding,whichIenjoyed,butIknewitwasn’t forme.ItwasneversomethingI’denvisioned. I’manouttheback,inthekitchensortof person.Neitherofusareonestobecentreof attention–we’requitehappytomeltintothe background,”sheexplains.
“Iponderedtheideaofdoingthebig weddingbutIcouldn’tfollowthroughwithitor justifyspendingallthatmoney.”
Sotheydecidedtotakethegirlsforafamily holidaytothesceneoftheirengagement exactlytwoyearslaterand,whiletheywere there,marry.Theyjustdidn’ttellanyone.
“Mysisterandherhusbandandthree childrendecidedtocomeonholidaywithus andweonlytoldthemandourgirlsthenight beforethewedding,”saysOlivia“We’dsaidwe

ATimarucouplemadeaPaihiaholidayextraspecialfortheir friendsandfamilywhoweren'tgoingtomissadoublecelebration.
“DerekagreedtogiveLisaaweddingringonher50thbirthday, soitwasdoublethepartyandagoodwayforhimtoremember theiranniversary.”
Melaniesaysthatherelopementvenueshaverangedfrom thetopofDuke'sNosetothetopofUrupukapukaIslandbut,no matterthelocation,beingprivytoacouple'sprivatecelebration isthehighesthonour.
“JaninneandPhillip,togetherfor15years,riskedthewrathof theirfivegrowndaughtersand‘ranoff’tomarryatPaihiaHoliday BeachResort.Itwastheirdayandtheirsalone.Theyknewthey wouldbothcryduringtheirvows;whattheydidn'tknowisthat they'dgetmegoingtoo.”
AndChrislynandAidanchosetohavetheirelopementatCliff TopcottageinMahinepua,aspecialgetawaytheyretreatedto timeandagainthroughtheirdatingyears.Itwasjustgoingtobe themandtheirbelovedOatisuntilAidan'sfamilyfoundoutand madethejourneyfromAuckland.

Thefollowingdecade reignedmanmadeknitsfor thosewhopreferredafitted dress.Cleverlydesignedto
complementwithdiscrete ruching,draping,ruffles andbling,theseCanadianinspireddesignscame ineverysizeandcolour, unfortunatelywithoutthe shapewear(Bendonsorted that).Electricblueandcerise pinkweresuchawowcolour preference,alongwith predictablenavy,wehadto monitoreachweddingin caseofdouble-ups.
Bythistime,outdoor, gardenandbeachweddings hadbecomethenorminpreferencetothetraditionalchurch weddingand,withtheaddedvarietythisprovided,wewere busy.OneSaturdayalone,withinafour-hourperiodwe dressedelevenMotherOf’s.Nopressure!
Overthelastdecadewehaveseenadramaticshiftto digitalshopping.Globaltrendsareaninboxawayandthe optionsarevariedandattainable.Wehavehadtoembrace this.Likebuyingahouse,manyofourin-storeshoppersare digitalbrowsers;theyarriveknowingwhattheyarelooking for,butnothingbeatstherealthing.MotherOf’shaveafeast ofchoicesinafashionworldwithnorules.Itboilsdownto selectingstyles,coloursandfabricsthatresonatewithwho youare,sometimeswhenyouleastexpectit,nudgingthose comfortzonesandtrustingyourexperts.

BYJODIBRYANTWhen June Pitman returned to herfamily land at Tamaterauafter four decadesaway, she wasstruck by theamountoforiginalfamily generationsremaining,richwithlocalhistory.
GordonPhotography,June,achildren’sbook authorandofMotumoanaEnterprisesLtd,set aboutcapturingthelocals’memories,entailing manyhoursofinterviewing,transcribing, craftingstoriesalongsidethephotographing, beforedisplayingtheminanexhibitionlast December.
“Peoplecame–bothPākehāandMāori descendantsoffamilies-whoengagedwith Māorifamiliesbackintheday,andsome ofthemweresittingreadingforages.One contributorhadn’ttoldhisdaughterhe’dbe appearingintheexhibitionandshesawhis photographandwasmovedtotears.
“Throughtheexhibitionwewereableto gaugeinterestinthebookandwegotmassive interest.Thebookwastheobviouswayto
captureit.Itallowedustotellthefullstoryas wehadtotrimthenarrativesfortheexhibition.”
Backintime,Whangāreithroughto WhangāreiHeadswasheavilyoccupied byMāoriandthesceneverydifferent. Insteadofroad,horsetrackpassedthrough settlementsofbeachsideraupo-thatched houses.Tamaterauwasusedintensely forgardeningandcultivation,kaimoana harvesting,communalgatheringsandtribal discussions,traditionalMāoripracticesand rituals,andotherdailyandseasonalactivities. Theshorelinewasalsoanimportantlanding/ departurepointforwakaand,later,numerous othervessels,includingthosetakinglocal producetotheHāteamarkets.
ButmuchofTamaterau'spre-historicMāori culturalheritageofthisareaduringthose timesisunknownanduntold,saysJune.A significantproportionoftoday'slandowners andoccupantsareunawareofthearea’srich andinterwovenhistory.
Whatdoesexistisagenerationalnetwork ofkaumātuaoTamaterau,alldescendantsof Māoriwhānauwhohavemaintainedcontinuity ofoccupying,living,cultivating,andfarming theirancestrallands.
Agedupto90yearsold,somehavelived theirentirelivesthereandsomehavereturned.
“Theyareguardiansofawealthofliving taonga(treasure)-memories,oralhistories, verbalandwrittenrecollectionsoftimespast topresentday;kaitiaki(guardian)ofstories viewedthroughthelensesoftheirpersonal adventuresandexperiencesofgrowingupand livinginTamaterau.”
Junesaystherichnessofstoriesshared oflifetimeslivedatTamaterau,coupledwith therealisationthatthekaumātuaandnext
generationofdescendantsareallgetting older,highlightedthefactthatitwouldonly beamatteroftimebeforethesepersonal recollectionswereatriskofbeinglostforever.
AlongwiththeDickey,Nelson,Pitman,Pohe, PepiandSolomonfamilies,features90-year-old kaumātuaRayHaora,whostillfarmslocalland.
“Ithinkit’sabsolutelyastoundingthatwe havethiswonderfullivinglegendwhoisstill sharpasatack,”remarksJune.
“Ithasverymuchbeenaheart-feltproject, aswellasdealingwithpeoples’lifestories, you’redealingwiththeirfeelingsandemotions. Thejourneyhasbeenveryprofound.”
Forherself,Tamaterauholdsaspecial place.RaisedbyherMāorigrandmotheronthe land,sherecallshugeorchardsandvegetable gardenswithplentifulkaimoana.
“It’sentrenchedinmysoul.IknowI’m meanttobereturningtomycallingandnow Ihavecomehomeanditfeelsjustright.It’sa privilegetobehere.
“I’mkaitiakiofthewhenuaandthat’s importantthatweunderstandthatconnection tothewhenua.Thewomenofmyfamilywere greatgardenersandI’veinheritedthatgeneso I’mcreatingalegacygarden.I’mputtinglove backintothelandwhilereducingmyprinton theworld,”saysJune,wholivessemi-off-grid.

WhenArchibaldClapham,the founderofClaphamsNational ClockMuseum,receivedhisfirst musicboxfromhisfatherforhis 7thbirthday,itmarkedthebeginningofhis passionformusicboxesandclocks.
Evenasateenagerhewasinterestedinall thingsmechanicalanddreamedofbecoming awatchmakerbut,lifeintervened,andhe becameanengineer,keepinghispassionfor clocksandclockworkmechanismsasahobby.
Archie'soriginalcollectionofaround400 itemsincludedallkindsofoddandrarepieces.
Inthemiddleoftheshedyouwilldiscover our1970,iconictanwithblackinterior,Hillman Hunter.Perhapsoneofthemostpopularfamily carsofitsera,bothinNewZealandandtheUK, theHunterwasmanufacturedbytheRootes groupinCoventry,England,andisoneofthelast trueEnglishcarsdesignedbythatcompany,as in1967theRootesGroupwastakenoverbythe
ChryslerCorporation.Ongoingcarswere designedwithanAmericaninfluence. TheHillmanHunter 1966through 1725c
saloon,(ourmodel),afive-doorestateora two-doorcoupe.InNewZealand,ToddMotors importedandassembledthecarsintheir factoryinPetone.However,from1969they usedtheirownupholsteryandin1970addeda silverreartrimpanel.
Generally,thecarremainedfundamentally thesamethroughoutitslifewithamildface liftin1970givingitanewgrillandmore fashionabledashboard–exchangingthe woodendashforplastic!Laterin1972,the dashboardwasfurtherenhancedbychanging thedialsforamoremodern,hoodedround design.Thesteeringwheelwasreplacedand theheadlampsreshaped.
Oneofthemostpopularobjectswithmuseum visitorsisagiantGermanpolyphonmusicbox from1890calledthe"Komet".
OurKometwasinserviceforalmost23years onthesteamshipWakatere,whichoperated betweenAucklandandthegoldfieldsof Thames.Whattalesitcouldtell!
Imaginethetimearound1900withnoreal streets,fewautomobiles,andonlyhorse-drawn carriages,itmadeforalong,difficultland journeytoAuckland,andthepeopleofThames wereproudoftheirabilitytogettothe`big smoke’inonly3hoursand15minutesonboard theWakatere.
Theshiphadalavishlyoutfittedlounge whereyoucouldenjoyyourteaandsandwich whileyoulistenedtoyourfavouritetuneson theKomet.But,aslittleinthisworldisfree, youneededtoinsertacoinintothesideofthe musicbox.Thistrippedthemainspringand releasedthemechanism,revolvingyourchosen disc.Perforationsinthe60cmdiscwouldstrike thetunedmetalbladesatthebackofthebox, producingthemusic.
Sadly,in1920theWakaterewaswithdrawn fromserviceandtheKometeventuallyfoundits wayintoArchie'scollectioninthe1950s.

Wefinishedthemonthwitha colorfulbangfromfabulousfabricartist Maungarongo(Ron)TeKawa.Knownfor hisvibrantandjoyfulworks,Ronhelped usfinishSeptemberwithalaughter-filled sewingworkshop,whereparticipantscould expresstheirwhakapapaintheformof quilts,flags,banners,andpendants.We alsohostedtheopeningofanexhibition ofhisworks-acollectionofplayfulquilts depictingbeautifulstories.
