Make sure to take advantage of the time by joining us in helping the community as well as taking a well deserved rest before the new school year arrives. Until then, please stay safe and have a great time!

Our board of officers has a lot of things planned for next year, so I hope you'll enjoy your stay. You don't remember each day you live, but you will remember the moments in them. I hope that Key Club will give you many enjoyable moments to remember!

Unstoppable
Written by Daniel Nguyen The difficulties of the school year during the Covid-19 pandemic have certainly taken its toll on many aspects of everyday life: unconventional learning environments, declining of local businesses as they struggled to make ends meet, and, of course, the climbing number of those who have fallen ill to the coronavirus. Last year was a far cry from easy for most people, and, in the case of service clubs like Key Club, the club had to cut back on helping the community in order to prioritize the safety of our members. However, as crazy as it was, looking back at last year in the club reveals a wealth of wisdom. Serving as the North Garland Key Club treasurer during this time has taught me about the value of hope and perspective, making the best of what you have and being proud of it. As I mentioned, the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic severely limited what the club could do. Even with safety precautions like wearing masks and 6 feet social distancing, it was obvious that available options were limited. At the beginning of last school year, confronted with this difficulty, I had honestly lost hope. I couldn’t bring myself to ask members to participate in fundraising for the club or for others when they themselves were probably struggling to get by, especially in our lower-income area. As for events in general, I was dissatisfied with the early virtual events such as Zooniverse which I felt did not offer the same sense of community and connection that usual Key Club events had to offer. Searching for hope during this time felt like fishing for pennies in the ocean. However, as I looked to my fellow officers, I saw that very glimpse of hope I was looking for. As bleak as the situation was, they were hard at work to ensure that the North Garland Key Club would offer the best experience it could. Inspired by their resolve, I couldn’t afford to sit by when it seemed like

dedicated effort could lead to a better outcome for the club. Of course, hard work means nothing if it is not done with smart intentions, and I am proud to witness the brilliance of my fellow officers, both in personality and in thinking. The core of the problem was that Key Club, by nature of being a service club, is an inherently social experience, but the Covid-19 pandemic heavily restricted social interactions. However, that did not stop my fellow board from finding new ways to connect with members. Near the beginning of the year, we launched the North Garland Key Club Discord server, and it has been useful as a means for announcements and members to connect with officers, other members, and their community, especially through random conversations and movie socials held on the server (watching A Silent Voice was certainly a tearful experience for the members present). Additionally, despite the limited availability of service events, the board tried their best to find safe yet enjoyable volunteers for members to go to, such as Trusted World and North Texas Food Bank. Best of all, I have to praise our designated “design team” of our board for making stunning visuals and taking an amazing collection of photos and videos, giving the club aesthetic a professional look that was full of care and creativity (nice website, nice Instagram posts, nice shirt design, nice articles, nice everything). Despite the difficulties of last year, I felt that our club did a great job of offering what we believed to be the Key Club experience. Even though social interactions were limited, I still felt a sense of community in Key Club, and this wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work, dedication, and brilliance of my fellow officers in making the club experience the best it could be. Now, with Covid-19 vaccines rolling out in the United States and other countries worldwide, I am looking forward to a bright future and seeing what great memories our club can offer next year.
Progress
Written by Ivy Nguyen Several times in my past articles, I have mentioned the ambitious goals I have for Key Club this term. That was to really push flyers and other graphic design promotions in an attempt to draw interest to upcoming events as well as past events to encourage future attendance. I also wanted to increase social media engagement, revamp the newsletter format, and introduce a new method of promotion: videos. As more events are being pushed out, our design team is being given more and more opportunities to create flyers and event recaps, and Key Club gradually returning to normal activity levels makes it much easier to achieve my goals of increasing social media engagement. Naturally, there would be more content to create flyers about. Recently, we released flyers for our car wash fundraiser, trusted world, and social meet-up. In addition to promoting flyers, we have also released event recaps with retouched photos that have interesting doodles for the car wash and trusted world. I believe these elements will help future members visualize the value of Key Club. I am very excited to finally be able to film videos. As much as I enjoy graphic design, videography has always been a passion of mine and I am very happy to be able to incorporate this passion into my position. Although the clips haven’t been used yet, they will make great use for future recap compilations and such types of videos. I am still deciding on the style of which I want to edit the videos as well as its final draft. I plan on doing a mix of serious and cinematic videos as well as playful and intimate styles. I think a mix of these styles will keep the videos entertaining and interactive. I look forward to the potential.

Lastly on my bucket list, the newsletter is also evolving with a more digital aesthetic. I stumbled across the aesthetic while researching on pinterest and I fell in love immediately. I have much of the newsletter figured out however I do realize there is only so much I can do with a digital aesthetic. The newsletter is still a work in progress as I work on finding new ways to make designs versatile so that the newsletter can have a fresh look each month. Overall, I am very pleased with how things are running and turning out. I have high hopes for what Key Club and the design team can accomplish in terms of graphic design. We have quite a hefty weight to lift as we are responsible for promotions and contribute to attracting members.
