As everyone is settling into the school environment again, keeping up with academics, clubs, and extracurriculars can be stressful, especially if you have signed up for a lot. At first, it may not seem like much, but as the year progresses, more events and assignments will stack on top of each other. And before you know it, all your time will be consumed by a packed schedule. I have tried to avoid biting off more than I can chew this year, but of course, unexpected things still happen, and I eventually find myself losing sleep and free time in order to meet deadlines and attend necessary events. Key Club this year has played a bigger role in my life than it did last year now that I am an officer. Not only am I attending events, but I am also taking more time out to plan for said events and other inner workings to keep the club successful. Hours have been spent with the board discussing our plans for the club and different ways to provide for these plans.
Aside from Key Club, I make sure to keep my academics and other extracurriculars (Orchestra, and Club Passport) in check as well.
Understanding what I am learning in academics is not much of a problem, however, finding time to do given assignments and turning them in on time has been a bit of a struggle. I put in a good amount of time practicing for orchestra and preparing for concerts to keep up with my classmates and not drag our group down. I am also an officer for Club Passport, but it is smaller than Key Club so there are fewer events to plan for. However, as we get further into the year, I imagine more events to happen with Club Passport. With a lot more going on in my school life this year
I find that keeping a planner has been a great help in planning and reminding me of upcoming events. My planner is not always quick activities. Key Club this year has played a bigger role in my life
and accessible though, so I also keep a list of notes on my phone. Since I am always on my phone, it is actually a great way to keep track of things along with using sticky notes whenever I can not access my phone.
In order to effectively keep up and balance everything, some sleep and free time will
naturally have to be sacrificed, but with the usage of reminders, notes, and a planner, it will be significantly easier. Using these three tools will allow you to plan ahead of time and fairly distribute your time between school, Key Club, and other extracurricular activies.
Everytime I am asked, “What is the best service event you’ve attended?” or “What is your favorite event you’ve done with Key Club?” it is never easy to answer what seems like such a simple question. Every event ends up having its ups, downs, pros, and cons. Yet, there is always that one event that you can never stop thinking or talking about. Light the Night Walk in benefit of Leukemia fighters and survivors was the event that really stood out to me. The ironic part was that the event started off kind of slow; we were constantly looking for jobs that we could do or stations that needed help. But, as the night progressed the atmosphere and emotions of our environment changed drastically. As the sky darkened, me and my group of friends were assigned to spread out along the path and cheer on runners. While we got in position, speeches from survivors and those who have had loved ones diagnosed with Leukemia were given. Hearing each story, I felt my emotions shift as the weight of everyone’s words flowed into my ears. I was so happy to know that by volunteering my time,
I was able to at least do something for people in the crowd. My eyes scanned the crowd from above, filling my vision with the sea of glowing red, gold, and white lanterns. I was so touched to see a crowd of strangers come together with one another in support of the same, unified cause. Not only was the cause great, I can tell that the members of my club really enjoyed the event as well. Seeing them walk around the grounds of the event with wide smiles and filling the surrounding area with laughter, made me extremely glad and, in a way, relieved.
I loved scrolling through every picture of the event that everyone had taken: group pictures of members together After all, small efforts like this will build up to make a big change.
different angles of the lanterns, pictures of the participants walking, the Dallas skyline, etc. My members bonded with each other, but I was also able to grow closer to my own friends as well. Key Club is what brought me close friendships and relationships
with people, and events further solidify our bond with one another. Though we show up with the mindset that we have a job to do, no one said that we can’t have fun while doing so. Waiting for the participants to march through, we all sit and enjoy each other’s company while admiring the view around us.
