Summer Plans

Because of the range of grade levels, I am very optimistic about this year’s board. Last year, the whole board were all seniors except for three sophomores. This year, we have sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The younger officers have shown lots of new energy which makes me excited to start planning for the 2022-2023 school year. This summer, I am planning to provide members with service hour opportunities for members that want to start earning their hours for the year early. I will also be searching for fundraising events so we can have a good start to the year. So far, we have a few things planned out for the summer. In June, there will be open spots to volunteer at North Texas Food Bank on two different days. Our club will also be participating in the melon dash. For the fundraisers, we are planning to have a car wash. We are still in the process of planning the socials for the members. Some of the officers suggested having a little social at a coffee shop. Having events and socials during the summer is a great way for members to bond with each other.

They don’t have to stress about school and can just have a fun time volunteering. I am planning to use this summer to help us prepare for next year. Since most of the officers are new on the board, it would be very helpful to get them used to the position. As one of the three new officers on last year's board, I wasn’t comfortable with my position until later on the year. Teaching the officers early on would help our club move more smoothly throughout the year. Keeping strict deadlines to finish tasks would help prevent the officers from slacking off at the end of the year.

By doing so, this will increase participation and also the effectiveness of volunteering events. I am planning to encourage the design team to create promotional flyers and keep our instagram active. Keeping the club and our social media active in the summer would help spread the word for new members to join in the fall.

Overall, this summer will keep our club on track to a great year. The officers will be keeping in contact with each other throughout the summer for monthly board meetings. I am excited for what's to come for North Garland Key Club.

Becoming Better Officer

As the new secretary for North Garland’s Key Club, there are a lot of new responsibilities that I have been given, such as filling out forms promptly, helping with Key Club related activities, and leading members at events. I was given this opportunity as a result of my fellow Key Club members deciding that I have the qualities needed for this position, and I am grateful to be able to become their officer as a part of a club I enjoy. However, I believe that I can improve on many of the aspects needed as an officer, such as communication, organization, and consistency. As secretary, organization is a very important aspect, since being organized helps with getting the forms and documents filled out with good quality and turned in promptly. Being organized can include a number of things, such as a schedule for when to complete forms, files to keep track of the forms, and more. I believe that I can be organized, but being consistent with the organization system that I create will get harder throughout the year as I become more busy and possibly worn out.

As a result, I believe that I need to work on my organization skills to ensure that my duties will get done promptly, and on my consistency to make sure that I continue to get those duties done properly throughout the year. I think that my assistant secretary, Y Nguyen, and I will be very effective in making sure that we both stay organized and consistent throughout the year as well as help each other improve on these aspects. As an officer, communication is essential to make sure that everything runs smoothly at events, socials, meetings, and more.

Whether it’s communicating with other officers or with members, the information that is being communicated should be clear and given promptly. become a better officer and do my best for Key Club as their secretary.

My written communication skills are not terrible, since I am used to writing essays and emails. However, I do struggle sometimes with getting my point across clearly, which can cause unnecessarily wordy sentences. As a secretary and an officer, I need to work on being more clear and straight to the point to make sure that my documents don’t

cand officers can understand any announcements I make clearly. On the other hand, my verbal communication skills still need a lot of improvement, especially since I am still very hesitant about speaking out and can be unclear with what I am trying to communicate when face to face with others.
