A Helping Hand A Helping Hand is a project that serves to raise awareness for children in the foster care system and advocates for foster kids who are struggling emotionally or financially. By donating items such as hygiene products, coloring books, school items, gifts, and clothing, you, too, can lend a helping hand!

snacks. As a result of our donation drive, we were able to collect more than 150 cans that will be donated to the organization to help with the children’s nutritional needs.

Like every other volunteering organization, Key Club has a service project that we will work toward every year. The service project can be anything that raises awareness of an issue or contributes to a cause. Last year, North Garland Key Club started a service project called “A Helping Hand” that focused on serving foster care children in our local community. To continue the project, I plan to expand the project to all children in need within the Dallas area.

Before the school year ends, I hope to expand the project to a larger scale meaning a larger demographic. I want the project to target not only children in need in our local and Dallas area but underdeveloped regions of the world such as many countries in Africa. I plan to host more donation drives that focus on education such as books and school supplies to help children in need in underdeveloped areas through non-profit organizations such as Books for Africa, UNICEF, and more.

Starting the project, I plan to host volunteer events where members can contribute through donating items in a donation drive or help us assemble things for a final product. Some events I have in mind for the service projects are assembling coloring books that will be donated to local hospitals such as Children's Medical Center Dallas and St.Jude and donation drives that help foster care places or to schools with a school supplies donation drive. The project is not only about contributing to the cause by donating things that the institution needs, but also raising awareness. To raise awareness, I plan to present a fun fact at our biweekly general meetings and have Instagram stories or posts about volunteering events that help children in our local and the Dallas area. As the school year started, we hosted a donation drive to donate canned food and snacks to a foster care place called Jonathan’s place to help with the foster care children in their nutritional needs. In addition to the donation drive, we also asked our members to help us organize the cans into categories such as vegetables, fruits, and

All in all, one major project that North Garland Key Club focuses on this year is the A Helping Hand project that is geared toward giving service to children in need in local communities.

Behind The Scenes

WRITTEN BY IVY NGUYEN

A few months ago, I proposed an idea to create a video for North Garland Key Club that will showcase the work that goes on in the board: “A month in the life of a Key Club officer.” This idea was mainly driven by the current uncertainty and anxiety that concerns the upcoming board. 70% of the current board are seniors, meaning that the majority of us will be graduating this upcoming year, and we are deeply worried for the future operation of this club, especially because our sophomore officers are not in any leadership positions. Moreover, we noticed that in the past, most electing officers are not fully aware of the responsibilities and amount of work they are running for. With this video, we hope to not only clarify roles and responsibilities but also improve transparency between officers and members in addition to encouraging our members to run in the upcoming election. Vice President, Isabella Ignacio, and I will be the main producers of this project. Since I first introduced this idea months ago, the both of us have been developing a plan. The goal style of the video that we are aiming for is a vlog. One of our objectives is to make Key Club more personal and inclusive, and we believe that vlogs are the perfect medium to send that message. That being said, this is very much subject to change, mainly because our officers aren’t necessarily film legends, and it may be difficult to create a “cozy” video with stiff officers. That is why for the past few months, we have been consistently debriefing information and reminding the other officers of this idea, so that everyone

is aware, on board, and prepared. Furthermore, to aid in familiarity with the camera, we created several resources and assignments. We made two google docs: one detailing instructions and filming tips, and other being a checklist of filming ideas and/or goals. We also created trial assignments that instructed the board to film practice shots, so that Isabella and I can evaluate cinematography along with helping the officers become comfortable with the camera. Official filming began on Thanksgiving break, and as I am writing this, I am consciously aware of the many twists and turns this project may take. Isabella and I hope to gather as much content as possible, however, finals and the holiday season are quickly approaching, which will most likely disrupt the filming process. Therefore, we are not exactly sure when filming will end. That being said, Isabella and I are prepared for any possibilities and will adapt as the conditions change.
