Improvement
WRITTEN BY ALVINA TRAN The holidays are approaching and so are exciting events. By having more events this holiday season, I hope to meet and interact with new members. As the club transition towards the holiday season, I plan to reflect heavily on how the club has been doing so far. There are a few key points that I’ve noticed throughout these past few months. The first aspect of Key Club that I believe could be improved is having more member suggestions. To improve the club, we need to listen to members’ ideas. Officers shouldn’t be the only ones carrying the whole club. The foundation of the club comes from its members are officers who oversee the whole process. Recently, a member suggested that the officers should make a Canvas so that the events are easier to navigate. After this suggestion, we realized there are some positive outcomes that Canvas could offer. We’ve created a poll to see so that members could choose what platforms they wanted to keep/remove. In the discussion between the officers, some of us said that Remind wasn’t needed anymore. It’s messy and only useful for immediate notices like changed dart times. Another aspect I believe that could be improved is the productivity of the officers. After the heavy workloads of homework and the unorganized selling of Peek A Boo Grams, I can see that my fellow officers have fallen into a little of a slump. With the numerous holiday events and Key Club week coming, we all have to push through it no matter how tiring and tedious it is. The members look up to us

as an example, but if we fall now, then we are setting up the club for a disaster. Lastly, over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed that some members have been going out of line. They are acting above the officers, so I think that we should be keeping everyone in check. Some of us have been being a little too nice, so it’s time to start acting strict. For example, at the Pink Walk, a couple of members have been acting up and wanted to do things other than help out. 4 officers including myself were leading the event with around 40 members. All of us were stressed out and I believed that we should’ve acted stricter to keep the members from acting out of line. While these are just a few aspects that I believe could be improved in the club, there are still some other minor things that could be addressed. So far, this year has been a blast. I’ve met many new people are formed special friendships with them. I hope that the success of the club will continue for many more years to come.

Organization and Structure WRITTEN BY DANIEL NGUYEN
The efficiency and effectiveness of any club, not just Key Club, is affected by how well structured it is. Similar to different types of governments, Key Clubs around the nation and around the world vary their structure a bit in order to suit their needs. Sometimes, officers decide everything for members and other times, members play an active role in influencing club decisions. Too much of the wrong thing can be detrimental to a Key Club’s overall structural integrity, so the question is what structure is right for us? Is our structure working for us currently or is there something that could be improved? Currently, the North Garland High School Key Club, or NG Key Club for short, is organized as so. There is a board of officers: 1 president, 2 vice presidents, 1 secretary, 1 assistant secretary, 1 editor, 1 assistant editor, 1 webmaster, and 1 historian, and 1 treasurer. For our year, I believe this is sufficient enough to divide the workload of the officers. There are 3 people working on events which keeps our influx of service appropriate, 2 secretaries to keep track of hours and writing reports, and 2 editors to keep up with the articles every month. Additionally, our club has a dedicated design team composed of some of the artistic officers to handle tasks like creating event flyers and anything else that needs a creative, artsy spin. The rest of the positions such as webmaster, historian, and treasurer are more specialized positions for specific tasks and as such do not require a division of workload (except for perhaps the historian role, in which all of the officers are responsible for taking pictures and videos of events).
"Is our structure working for us currently or is there something that could improved?" However, I still haven’t addressed another, pardon the pun, key component of our club and that is our members. Although the bulk of service events and projects that we do are determined by our president and vice presidents, we as a board are receptive to member concerns and ideas because they offer a closer look into what is happening in the club as a typical person. Through this system, we as a board can be quick to identify areas in the club that need improvement as well as consider new ideas that may drive the club to become better. Though, as much faith I put in our current organizational system, I feel as though many members don’t have a voice in what happens in our clubs although we are receptive to their concerns and ideas, and it comes down to being afraid to speak out. One of the core values of Key Club is leadership and it is in our best interests as officers to not just learn about leadership for ourselves so that we may lead but to also teach our members the value of leadership so that they may take action in an appropriate manner. There’s not a clear cut solution for this, but ideas that come to mind are transparency and lead-by-example. If we as a board can clearly show the members how to properly be leaders, then we as a whole improve exponentially.
