A NEW YEAR 2020. A wild roller coaster of emotions and events, from an international pandemic to fights for social justice to new political woes, throughout it all, I am proud to say that the North Garland Key Club was able to prevail, still serving others in times of need and helping those in need of aid. Now that 2021 has arrived, providing a blank new slate of excitement and renewal , this year I hope that this year that I can get closer with all members of the Key Club family, expand the influence of Kawanis in our community, and create new, fun memories. Online learning has not been the easiest, and with less interaction in school it’s been difficult to create genuine bonds and relationships with the members of Key Club. This year, from ideas of upcoming Valentine’s Day movie nights to possibly even a Formal if possible , everyone on the North Garland Key Club board is trying their best to provide opportunities for new friendships and memories. Like the Key Club motto, “ Caring -Our way of life”, throughout this school year, all of the officers have prioritized the members, wanting to care and create lasting memories and bonds. Hopefully the efforts of the board will yield good results in the future! Furthermore, this year, I want NG

Key Club to strive to serve and influence the community. With COVID19 precautions, many officers, including myself, were wary and concerned for the safety of members, thus we mostly stuck with online events. Now that it is much safer, with much precaution and safety regulations, our organization is working hard to provide opportunities for communal volunteering, such as in Food Banks and other locations. By doing this we hope to provide aid for those in struggling times, and give our members a sense of honor and dignity by doing good for the world in such times. Lastly, I hope that this year Key Club as a whole can continue to create new, fun memories. The charm of Key Club is in its unity and combined effort and intent to better the world. Despite this year being vastly different from the past, by creating bonds and providing community service, I sincerely hope that members can find value in their experiences, and one day look back on these times and view it in a positive light. From new friendships to serving others to socials, being part of Key Club is a truly beautiful and life changing experience for many, and with the combined efforts of the board, I know we can look forward to another great year. Good luck in 2021!

The transition from middle school to high school can be quite a dramatic experience. It is a time where many freshmen are leaving behind their familiar middle school environment and are jumping headfirst into a seemingly bigger and even daunting world: high school. Coming to North Garland High School, I had left behind many of my former middle school friends, and so I was pretty much back at square one for social connections, a new fish in the lake with a bunch of other new fish. However, with more fish around, there are more opportunities to befriend other fish, one way being through clubs and their socialization. As a freshman, I chose Key Club as my go-to for volunteering and it has stuck with me since. North Garland High School offers a variety of clubs from volunteering to academic competitions, many of which are respectable. Some examples of clubs that volunteer are Beta Club, National Honors Society, StuCo, and, of course, Key Club. Though these clubs have much in common, bringing students together in a similar cause, I believe there are three KEY things that set Key Club apart from other volunteering clubs. For one, Key Club

has no prior requirements for becoming a member. Other than a membership fee (which is used to fund club activities and expenses, I know because I am the treasurer), Key Club does not prevent students from joining based on academic records or petitions or the likes. Instead, it aims to connect students from all walks of life to their community. Second, Key Club has a clear purpose: to foster leadership, character-building, caring, and inclusiveness in our members through volunteer and service. While other clubs may get involved in some volunteer work, Key Club is one of the only clubs at North Garland to have a clear and respectable goal in volunteering. Lastly, Key Club is one of the largest club organizations at North Garland. 79 members strong, Key Club has a significant influence and ability for volunteering. It is a great place to make friends and really make an impact on the community. All in all, I chose Key Club for its inclusiveness, values, and relative influence. Having been in Key Club for 3 years now, I have met many great people and shared many memorable experiences. Being in Key Club has helped shape me into the person I am today.
