IMPROVEMENT As vice president, I always see ways to improve my abilities to help the team of board members as well as the members. I’ve learned that no one is always 100% perfect at their job. This means that even though they do their job very well either it be a secretary getting in meetings minutes and monthly reports or vice presidents consistently finding events and coming up with projects, there will always be ways to improve and learn how to do the job even better. As I became North Garland High’s Key Club vice president, I was scared for my life. I was extremely lost because I had no idea how to be a leader of a club, let alone having someone else’s attention towards me since I’m their partner. However, as a few months went by and I realized that the world wasn’t going to end, I noticed that the job of vice president was not as much of a struggle as I had made it seem. Helping out with projects, finding ways to keep members active every month, and many other responsibilities that come with the position. I’ve learned that I was able to improve and there is no penalty in asking for help (and especially nothing to be embarrassed about asking for it either). Transitioning into another year for Key Club, I’ve been figuring out ways that I am able to add on to the skills that I already have and how to become a better vice president in the end. First, the president wanted the two vice presidents to split the work rather than have one person have all the responsibilities, so teamwork is a must from me. To be completely honest this year, I’ve been more of a side character waiting for work to be

placed onto my tray rather than seeking out jobs myself. For this upcoming school year, I’m pulling my own weight in the club so that everyone, especially my vice president partner, is able to see that I am able to get the job done rather than a slacker. Another way for me to better myself in this position is being able to effectively communicate with the other board members, seeing if they need any assistance with their task(s) or just bi-weekly check-ins to make sure that everyone is going through everything just fine. Adding onto communication, being able to effectively project one’s ideas to the team and explain everything clearly is a strong skill to have due to the fact that once a debate is sparked within the group, the different positions on the topic need to be spoken clearly in order for people to form their opinions and their agreements/ disagreements. I’ve said before that there are many different ways for people to improve on the skills that they already have and that no one is ever perfect at their jobs no matter how well they do it. I can see clearly that I have many things to improve on, but I’m able to find ways to make those improvements to be the vice president that fills the majority of the team’s expectations.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY "Getting to see the members in person and having sincere discussions regarding festive topics was on of the highlights..." The 2021-2022 school year could be described as anything but normal. As a year filled with virtual events, online meetings, and discord chats, communication between the members and officers was key in holding members accountable to earning their service and making sure they were enjoying the experience in the process. The buddy system and the Dallas Arboretum event were highlights from this past year that definitely strengthened my relationship with the members. Our officer board decided to implement the buddy system this past year as a method by which officers were paired with a group of senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman members as a means to offer mentorship, companionship, and guidance to answer any questions they may have. Being grouped with members I usually only briefly greeted at events forced me to maintain meaningful conversation with them that gave me insight in how they were enjoying Key Club this year, tips for improvement for the officer board, and just learned more about their hobbies and interests. This opportunity definitely proved valuable in getting to know the freshman of the club, some of whom I had never seen in person before, and was meaningful to know they were still able to enjoy their first year of experience in the club despite it being mainly virtual based.
The Dallas Arboretum event was the first in person event that I attended in December with numerous other members of the club. Our responsibilities included splitting into pairs to work different stations of Santa’s Wonderland that ranged from a music store, cookie bakery, and Santa’s sleigh. I was in charge of walking around to the different booths and ensuring all the volunteers had all their supplies and were being courteous to the guests. The experience definitely strengthened my relationship with the members as he didn’t have many other options for entertainment other than having conversations regarding our holiday celebrations and what we were excited about for Christmas. Getting to see the members in person and having sincere discussions regarding festive topics was one of the highlights in building a closer connection with the members of the club especially during my last term as an officer. An event that was also held close to this time period was the Trusted World event where volunteers were expected to sort jackets, shirts, pants, and sleepwear. The event helped me build new relationships with the freshman members whom I never had a chance to talk to in person until that event and helped foster a closer sense of community among the members.
