Experiencing Change WRITTEN BY CLAIRE NGUYEN

Senior year has been a period of major change for me. Along with talk of college applications and scholarships, I’ve also quit my major elective, theatre, and many AP classes in order to make room for my mental health. After clearing my schedule, I felt a gap where I surprisingly have a lot more free time, and I suddenly felt like I was missing something. Key Club helped fill that gap; attending meetings, volunteering with my friends, and going to socials made me feel a lot better about my decision and about how I spend my time. As a notorious people pleaser, being able to help people and organizations by making their job easier makes me feel so excited that I was able to fulfill their expectations. Working with my fellow officers is such a rewarding experience, especially since everyone has their own responsibilities that all come together in the end. Belonging to a group and devoting time into a mutual goal reminds me of theatre in a way no other organization or extracurricular has given me. Volunteering with my peers is also a very rewarding experience, despite having to wake up early or spending time on weekends volunteering. Spending time with my peers and working hard to do an efficient job and help around events where we can is an experience I’ve never really gotten anywhere else. Although Key Club is not about competition, having a friendly rivalry with my peers about total service hours is also something that

makes me feel like I truly fit in somewhere. Due to my past issues with productivity and feeling motivated, I’ve always struggled with working up the drive to participate, which is one of the reasons I changed my schedule majorly for senior year. Being able to simultaneously take it easy and work hard in Key Club is such a great way for me to practice working efficiently and pushing myself to do tasks I’ve never done before. While my senior year is looking a lot different than years before, Key Club helps ease the transition from my earlier high school years and college by giving me a place to belong, friends to forge new bonds with, ways to push myself, and somewhere I can be myself. I’m glad I get to be involved with such a beneficial club that provides support for my school, my fellow peers, and my community.

Definitely Not A Psychological Strategy WRITTEN BY DANIEL NGUYEN

As the membership deadline for our club approaches, it’s time to start getting things into action in the club. Naturally, as with any year, we are seeing new Key Club members, but this year is critical for the club’s new members because it will be one of their first times being in a service club since Covid-19. That raises the question, however, of maintaining membership engagement in the club. I think the solution is quite simple: no matter the event we do, if we do not create strong social connections within the club, there will be no membership engagement. What do I mean by strong social connections? I mean a club lives and dies by how closely connected its members are. If no one shows up to an event: dead club. However, if we can get at least one person to come, then we can get them to invite their friends. If we’re lucky, we might even get a whole friend group to come. One part of this process is about tapping into already established friend groups in order to connect volunteering and a joint experience with friends. The other part of the process is about getting interconnections between friends and friend groups. This is where the real magic of Key Club happens. Once we get individuals and their friend groups to come, they then meet other people and their groups. Most of the time, this only ends up as a simple, “Hi, I met you at this one event.” However, over time, familiarity builds and a simple greeting may turn into a great friendship.

showing up, but not anyone else. It’s the same friend groups and a couple of others, but what really needs to happen is we need to introduce new friend groups and create new connections so that people have someone to volunteer with. This has to start with reaching out. If we can get at least every member in our club to try out an event once, I’m sure there will be many that would want to come back for the experience. Personally, I want Key Club to be a place where its members can meet new people, whether it’s within the club or within their community. I want the experience to be eye-opening to the bigger world and its many people. I think this starts with the officers. We represent the club as its leaders and role models. Therefore, we have to lead by example and reach out to others within our club first. Once members have a connection to the officers, they have a connection to the club. Once this happens, who knows what chain reaction will happen next, but I’m excited to find out.

I think one of the main problems in the club right now is that the same people keep
