BONDGATE BAKERY WOWS THEM AT WESTMINSTER!

Author Talks to Pool WI Hazel Stephenson, author of Land Girls and Lovers, recently talked to Pool in Wharfedale WI about ‘How to write a novel’. Hazel had come to a point in her life where she wondered how she was going to fill her time. She had an interest in the land army girls and knew a lot about the countryside and animals so, so egged on by her husband and son, she started writing. It wasn’t easy but she battled on, shed tears, and eventually published her book.

Greg Mulholland MP recently welcomed Otley’s Bondgate Bakery to Westminster for the launch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England’s (CPRE) Mapping Local Food Webs National Report. The CPRE’s report aimes to reveal the extent, nature and benefits of local food webs in parts of England, increase public and policy-makers’ awareness of local food networks and identify ways to improve support for the production, supply and sale of local produce. Otley was one of 19 locations to be mapped.

The CPRE also launched the 30:30 Challenge at the reception, which asks people to commit to sourcing 30 percent of their food from within 30 miles for a month. The aim is to highlight the quality and diversity of locally produced food and encourage people to support their local high streets.

“In setting out to map local food webs we hoped to measure the fantastic contributions these networks make”, said Graeme Willis, Senior Food Campaigner for CPRE. “We achieved just that, finding great examples of local food webs helping to buck national trends of high street decline.”

“I was delighted to welcome Steve and Sally from Bondgate Bakery to Westminster”, said Greg. “It’s fantastic that they had the opportunity to showcase their products to a national audience at the Campaign to Protect Rural England’s Parliamentary reception.”

Bondgate, who feature in the report, was hailed as a champion of local food - enriching the local economy not only through sales, but also through supplying other local businesses. The bakery has received national acclaim for the quality of its food from a number of sources and even supplies Harvey Nichols in Leeds.

She now has completed a second book called Land Girls, following on from the first one – showing just what determination can do!

ILKLEY MANOR HOUSE CELEBRATES On Saturday 14th July, Bradford Museums & Galleries, Friends of Ilkley Manor House and The Civic Society come together for a joint day of celebrations.

The afternoon also offers an opportunity to join a tour of the Manor House led by local historian Mike Dixon, an active member of Friends of

the Manor House. You can also enjoy the ever-changing Courtyard Gardens, currently undergoing a make-over with with Yolande Ingham, an experienced gardener and another Friend of the Manor House. Visitors will be entertained by the lively steel band Pantasy.

The event offers an opportunity to discover this treasured building, which is hidden away from public view. Probably the oldest building in Ilkley, standing in the Roman Fort of Olicana which was abandoned in the late 4th/5th century AD, it was rescued from demolition in the 1950s. Launching with a preview on 14th July, the Manor House is hosting an exhibition focusing on the sports clubs of Ilkley and Ben Rhydding. The exhibition will provide an insight into the history of the many and varied clubs that have made Ilkley their home and will feature objects from the clubs, complemented by items from Bradford Museum and Galleries collections. northleedslife.co.uk | July 2012 09

MARTIN HOUSE CELEBRATES ACADEMY 25 YEARS OF CARING FLORISTS WIN WINDOW DRESSING COMPETITION

In 1987, the concept of a service dedicated to caring for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families was quite new. Martin House Children’s Hospice was only the second children’s hospice in the world! Since then the number of families that have been helped has run into thousands and not one of them has ever been asked to pay a penny for the care received, although many have offered a donation. Advances in medical treatments have led to sick children living longer and, in 2002, a teenagers’ unit, Whitby Lodge, was erected alongside the existing hospice and the hospice became Martin House Hospice for Children and Young People.

The care provided by Martin House costs around £5 million a year. About 12% of this comes from statutory sources and the balance is made up through voluntary giving. One way this is done is by like-minded people joining or setting up a local ‘Friends Group’, who raise funds by organising local events and collections. Such groups exist in Otley (01943 461082) and Ilkley (01943 817773) and both would welcome more helpers! If the hospice is to reach its Golden Anniversary it needs your help. It doesn’t matter how old or young you are, or how much or little time you can give – your help will be much appreciated.

The Otley Carnival Window Dressing Competition attracted a record 38 entries!

Since then the number of families that have been helped has run into thousands and not one of them has ever been asked to pay a penny for the care received

In the Medium Windows category, Soap Gallery took first, with Paul Verity Opticians in second and RSPCA third. Willow Gifts and Cards was Highly Commended.

Caring for a sick child can throw a terrible burden on the rest of the family, most usually the mother, but siblings often feel left out as less time is available for their needs. When a child is receiving care in the hospice, their parents and siblings can stay with them, if they like. All the children being cared for come from either West or North Yorkshire, with a significant

number from the North Leeds and Wharfedale areas. Care can also, if requested, be provided in the child’s own home by a team of full trained nurses.

The overall winner was Academy Florists on Boroughgate. First place in the Large Windows category was Tranmere Flowers, with Heebies Café in second place, and Vision Value in third. Soft Options was Highly Commended.

Victoria Plum Cake was first in the Small Windows category, followed by Velvet Cup Cake in second and A Teale & Son third. Harriets on Westgate was Highly Commended Harriets. Pictured: Stephen Nobes of Academy Florists (right) with Sue Bye, organiser of the Window Dressing Competition.

More than 30 beacons were lit across West Yorkshire at 10.15pm on 4th June to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee and Surprise View on Otley Chevin, being the highest point in the Leeds area (925ft), played an important part in the festivities,. Greg Mulholland MP joined the hundreds of people who took part in the celebrations on Otley Chevin. Along with the Mayor of Otley, Mary Vickers, and the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Ann Castle, Greg inspected the troops of the Otley and Yeadon Army Cadet Corp and admired the rousing performance of the military band. Following the official speeches, the crowd watched as the Lord Mayor lit the first of the nine beacons, followed by the rest. “It was great to see so many people on the Chevin to celebrate this once in a lifetime event”, said Greg. “This was a great way to bring the local community together to celebrate such an amazing occasion. The young people from the Otley and Yeadon Army Cadet Corp did a spectacular job and should be proud of all of their hard work in preparing for this historical occasion.” Events - Parties - Weddings - Construction

A STRAWBERRY TEA FOR MISSIONS WITHOUT BORDERS

Bob and Pauline Dobson from Otley will hold their annual Strawberry Teas for Missions Without Borders (MWB) on Saturday 30th June at 27 Cambridge Grove, Otley. Last year they raised over £300 and they hope to top that figure this year.

Missions Without Borders has worked in Romania since 1990 and Bob and Pauline have visited on a number of occasions. Based in Sibiu, MWB has established various humanitarian and Christian outreach programmes, aimed at meeting the needs of Romania’s most vulnerable people. The plight of the 100,000 orphaned or abandoned children motivated MWB to establish the child sponsorship programme: Child Rescue International. Working with the Romanian Government, MWB has helped to bring about the closure of a number of the large orphanages. Many children are now fostered, have been reunited with their own families, or are living in much smaller units. Work with these children continues and the charity has introduced vocational and educational training courses. Impoverished families’ needs are being met through MWB Family to Family sponsorship and Family Care schemes. If unable to attend, any donations for the charity would be gratefully received, please send these to Bob and Pauline at the above address.

So, who’s going abroad and who’s staying put this Summer? “Stay put?” you say. “There’s nothing to do.” Think again! OK the weather might be a bit iffy, but once you start looking, you’ll be absolutely amazed at the huge variety of things to do, places to go, and people to see – and all right here within easy reach of Leeds.

14 July 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

Party on! Frankly, the Jubilee and the Olympic torch tour seem to have whetted people’s appetite for a party. Now, with the bit between their teeth, the party is likely to continue all Summer. I predict that various shows around Yorkshire which may have been fairly sedate affairs in previous years, will have all stepped it up this year. There’ll be Jubilee this and Jubilee that and, of course, Jubolympics! ‘Jubilee’ will be thrown in for good measure wherever you go.

If you fancy the great outdoors, head up The Dales, to The Lakes, or to The Peak District. A few clicks on Google and you’ll be overwhelmed with the variety of things to do and places to stay – from lovely little camping sites, B&Bs, and cosy pubs to sheer luxury. And it seems that every little village and town has some celebration or festival. There are agricultural shows, music, food and craft festivals, and special activities everywhere you turn. The great thing is that most are close enough to be enjoyed as part of a day trip. Or, stick closer to home and enjoy time on Otley Chevin or Ilkley Moor - together with Brimham Rocks and Almscliffe Crag, you’ll find some great limestone climbing and gritstone bouldering here.

Betting on horses Riding Centres will be busy and all offer excellent tuition as well as an opportunity to help out with the horses. Hope Pastures, the horse and donkey sanctuary on Weetwood Lane, is again offering their popular Pony Days – be sure to book soon as they get booked up pretty quickly. You can also visit the sanctuary between 10am and 3pm every day. If you fancy a flutter the Yorkshire Racing Summer Festival starts Saturday 17th July at Ripon Racecourse, with meetings on 23rd and 24th at York and at Pontefract on 25th July. In addition to racing, there’s live music and family entertainment and under-16s go free!

For the animal lover in you Home Farm at Temple Newsam is the largest Rare Breeds Survival Trust Approved Centre in the UK. Some of the breeds they have are so rare that there are only a few hundred individual animals in existence – that’s rare! They hold all kinds of weekend and family activities, plus there’s the beautiful house to visit too.

Learn a little more Look out, too, for Summer Schools. You’ll often find that organisations like Opera North, Northern Ballet and Northern School of Contemporary Dance and various drama schools all hold special summer sessions. And the Rock & Roll Circus is holding a six week Rock School starting 23rd July. The Summer Reading Challenge will be happening again through all Leeds Libraries. The aim is to get children to read six books from their library during the holidays and there are certificates and incentives available as encouragement – check with your local library.

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is always worth a visit with its fantastic menagerie – you’ll find goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs, hedgehogs, rabbits, bees, and rumour has it that they may be welcoming a couple of llamas soon. And, don’t forget Tropical World at Roundhay Park where you can meet the cutest meerkats, as well as butterflies and lots of creepy crawlies.

LIFE & STYLE

THEY LIVED IN LEEDS

Edmund Bogg (1851-1931) writer, countryman, rambler, bohemian ‘T’owd Chief’

Was there really once a group of braves who had their pow-wows in Leeds, with cooking pot and bowl of firewater, their chieftain in feathered head-dress and war-paint, passing round the pipe of peace? Did they make sorties into the countryside – not with tomahawks but with sketch pads and notebooks? Yes, for these were the members of the Leeds Savage Club, founded around 1891 by Edmund Bogg, who is remembered today for his many fine books on the Yorkshire countryside he knew and loved so passionately.

Edmund Bogg came from Duggleby, a tiny hamlet in the Wolds, where his father was a wheelwright. He had little schooling. When he was twenty he came to Leeds in search of employment and tried his hand at joinery and then work as a ‘colourman’, mixing paints for artists. He came to love the artistic world with its bohemian flavour and finally set up in business as a picture dealer and framer with a gallery and workshop in Woodhouse Lane, living nearby with his wife Fanny and their young family. He gathered round him a group of young artists, some of whom he would pay to go off to paint in the countryside and supply him with pictures he could sell in his shop. Some like Owen Bowen were to become well-known and move on to wider success through his support. A tall, striking figure, with a bristling moustache, Bogg was well-known and popular with the artistic community, and loved their company. So he hit on the idea of a club, based on the Savage Club in London, which would bring artists, musicians and writers together and provide amusement and relief from the restrictive everyday world. A spirit of bohemianism was essential! There were to be only fifty members, who would be called Savages, with a Chief as president, a Scribe as secretary, and Braves as committee men. This Red Indian theme was Edmund Bogg’s inspiration and 18 July 2012 northleedslife.co.uk

he was chosen as the Chief, to preside in feathers and war paint over the jolly and sometimes rowdy pow-wows in the Wigwam – the firewater (whisky punch) was powerful stuff. Many artists and writers joined the Tribe and distinguished visitors were entertained. There were trips around the countryside too, rambling, camping, and sketching. They arranged concerts and events in the villages to raise funds for local causes, but began to lose their bohemian edge. By 1914 the Club had begun to fade away and came to an end in the 1930s. Luckily some of the funny, inventive invitation cards to the pow-wows, and props like the firewater bowl, cooking pot and Chief’s headdress and throne were kept safe and are now on view in the City Museum. Meanwhile Edmund Bogg embarked on a new venture,

combining his passion for the countryside with his self-taught love of history and literature. In 1892 he published ‘A Thousand Miles in Wharfedale’, an account of a journey with his artist friends, with lyrical descriptions of village and country, historical anecdotes, and delightful illustrations by friends like Percy Robinson and Gilbert Foster alongside his own photographs. Its success encouraged him – ‘Edenvale to the Plain of York’ followed, then ‘Two thousand miles of wandering in the Border Country and Lakeland’ and in 1902 the very popular ‘Old Kingdom of Elmet’, which includes an account of his hometown Leeds as he knew it, fascinating for the modern reader. More finely illustrated books on neighbouring areas followed, and new editions of his popular earlier works were published into the 1920s. He called them a labour of love. He loved the countryside and he loved words. His prose seems sentimental and overblown now, and came under fire at the time – in 1902 he apologised for the ‘abandon’ of his language which he said came from that ‘sense of joyfulness …peculiar to the heart of the born rambler’. Who can resist such a claim? T’owd Chief, as he was still known, died at his home in Caledonian Road, Leeds, in 1931, aged 81. In his own words, the time had come for him to ‘bid adieu to the hills and vales, rivers and glens [and] glide gently down the river of life to journey’s end, like the beautiful Wharfe..’ He was remembered as a colourful eccentric, and a lover of the arts and the Yorkshire countryside.

THERE’S A ROCKING NEW MUSICAL IN TOWN!

Loserville is the first musical from James Bourne, formerly of youthful poprock bands, Busted and Son of Dork, and draws its inspiration from songs on the Son of Dork album, Welcome to Loserville. Rather than the expected grand debut in the West End, this thrilling new show opens at our very own West Yorkshire Playhouse. Written with Bourne’s long-time friend and collaborator Elliot Davis, the show is set in the early 70s and is the story of Michael Dork, a computer nerd whose love of binary code is equalled only by his newfound preoccupation – girls. It ain’t easy being a geek but Michael’s working on a technological innovation which might just change the world and (more importantly) help him win the affections of the beautiful and brainy Holly. The twenty strong cast includes former Eastenders star Aaron Sidwell, Gareth Gates, and Rock School sensation, Lil’ Chris. Behind the scenes, a host of award-winning theatrical talent has helped to bring James and Elliot’s vision to the stage with Loserville benefiting from the skills and experience of director Stephen Dexter, choreographer Nick Winston and designer, Francis O’Connor.

I had no idea at the time that the songs might one day end up as part of a huge musical stage show

When North Leeds Life visited the Playhouse to meet with the cast and crew, we found the place abuzz with activity as Loserville becomes the chief focus for the theatre’s facilities and staff. About halfway through the preparations for the show, the energy and enthusiasm of all involved was palpable 20 July 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

Gareth Gates and the cast of Loserville and James and Elliot seemed thrilled with the progress. Although Loserville is the first musical James has written, he has previous form in this area as he appeared in the title role in Sam Mendes’ production of Oliver when he was a lad. I asked James if Welcome to Loserville was a concept album of sorts when he first wrote it and whether he had any dramatic potential in mind when he penned the songs?

“Maybe subconsciously”, he replied, “but I had no idea at the time that the songs might one day end up as part of a huge musical stage show. Elliot, being a fan of the album, planted the idea in my mind some time ago and after he’d done some work with Youth Musical Theatre we talked about it some more and realised it was something we’d really like to do. So, we met with Stephen (Dexter, director) who seemed really enthusiastic and it started to develop from there.”

there’s a real mix of people involved – from those who are professionally trained to people just off the streets with natural talent

“When you begin writing something like this there’s nothing there”, says Elliot, “so you’ll write ‘a computer room’ and then someone has to go and build a computer room. You see a drawing which then becomes a model and when

A live band will accompany the performers for all the musical numbers. Was James tempted to get involved with playing any of the music? “Well, I’ll probably jam with the guys in rehearsals but I feel like I really need to watch it rather than be on stage. For me, this isn’t about performing. It’s about seeing the work Elliot and I have written brought to the stage.”

The pair seems well aware of how fortunate they are to have such a talented team on board, particularly in terms of set design and choreography, and both are struck by the exciting, surreal experience of seeing their ideas take shape.

you see it physically as part of a set, that’s when it starts becoming real and you realise how many people are involved at every level.”

“What’s great about this show”, Elliot says, “is that there’s a real mix of people involved – from those who are professionally trained to people just off the streets with natural talent. This lends the show a certain spice and an energy you don’t necessarily see in the West End. After all, this is a story about

people who don’t fit in and those who think they do, but are actually just bullies. There are loads of different layers of ideas, but essentially it’s about a geek who has a dream of sending the first e-mail and about all those who feel marginalised but pursue their dreams and end up changing our world.” The show’s central theme and its 1970’s setting give the production a cross generational appeal, conjuring up a world before mobile phones and e-mail, which younger audience members will be unfamiliar with, while reminding adults of the way things used to be. The writers insist it’s a show for everyone, neither dumbing down for the kids nor leaning too heavily on nostalgia for their parents. “I really like this”, says James, “it’s just a lot of fun. It’s not too cheesy or heavy. It’s just a light hearted fun show everyone can enjoy.” Looserville is at West Yorkshire Playhouse untill 14th July for tickets call 0113 213 7700

DFAS COMPLETES OTLEY PARISH CHURCH RECORD Bernard Gill (Churchwarden1985-1991), current Churchwardens, Barry Milner and Margaret Parkin, Jane Hedley, Leeds DFAS church recording group leader.

OTLEY ARTS CLUB’S SUMMER EXHIBITION The new Mayor of Otley, Councillor Mary Vickers, is set to open Otley Arts Club Summer Exhibition at Otley Courthouse on 1st July. The exhibition presents an exciting and eclectic selection of art from club members and many pieces will be for sale. The event is open to the public from 2nd – 28th July, Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm.

The Church Recording team of Leeds Decorative and Fine Arts Society (DFAS) recently completed the record for the Parish Church of All Saints, Otley, and presented it to the churchwardens at a special service held at the end of May.

The Victoria and Albert Museum started the scheme about 40 years ago. They were planning an exhibition of religious artefacts, but didn’t know where to find them! Over the years as the number of records has grown, so have their uses. Today they are used by the Police and insurers to identify stolen objects – several important pieces have been returned to their rightful owners due to the detailed 24 July 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

DFAS will start recording Bramham Church this month. This attractive church, containing some Anglo-Saxon elements, is sited in an oval churchyard, believed to be Saxon. Previous records undertaken by the group can be consulted at the West Yorkshire Archive Service offices in Sheepscar, Leeds.

Otley Arts Club was formed in 1947 with the aim of bringing together people interested in all branches of art and giving them a common meeting ground. AVENUE Q SET TO WAINWRIGHT CAUSE MISCHIEF PRESENTATION RAISES THOUSANDS IN LEEDS OF POUNDS FOR CHARITY

Arthur Wainwright John Burland, the founder of the Wainwright Society, has written and devised a dramatic presentation on the life and works of Alfred Wainwright. This was first presented as part of the Ilkley Literature festival in 2009, and since then has played to audiences across the North of England, raising thousands of pounds for various charities.

Avenue Q has enjoyed nearly five years of mischief, bad behaviour and political incorrectness in the West End and now it’s bringing more to Leeds Grand Theatre! A witty, rude and extremely funny show, Avenue Q combines a cast of humans and puppets who tackle subjects such as dating, racism, being gay and finding your purpose in life. The story follows Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate as he desperately tries to follow his dreams and discover his everelusive purpose in life. A tiny bank balance, the distraction of a busty blonde and a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbours lead him on a journey of self-discovery. Avenue Q is at The Grand Theatre from 15th – 21st July (suitable for ages 12+). Tickets are available from 0844 848 2705 or www.leedsgrandtheatre.com

John takes his audiences on a journey through Wainwright’s life from his humble upbringing in Blackburn through his lifechanging visit to the Lake District in 1930, his move to Kendal in 1940 and the fifteen years spent writing the outstanding guides to the Lake District. It included a more passionate side of the man with his surreptitious love affair in the mid ‘60s and concluded with his final journey to the summit of Haystacks where his ashes were scattered in 1991. You can catch the presentation at four venues during September and October – Otley Courthouse, Friday 14th September 7.30pm (£5 in advance, £6 on the night from 01943 467466 or admin@otleycourthouse.org.uk); St Giles Church Hall, Bramhope, Saturday 22nd September 7pm, in aid of Bramhope Children’s Society (Tickets £10 including two-course meal from 0113 2673772 or ensue@hotmail. co.uk); Old Modernians Sports Club on Wednesday 26th September 7.30pm (Tickets £5 – from 0113 2677467 or oldmodssocialsection@yahoo.co.uk); and Cookridge Methodist Church, Thursday 4th October 7.30pm (Tickets £4 from 0113 267 6397 or dfrydavid@btinternet.com). northleedslife.co.uk | July 2012 25

HOW DID THESE OBJECTS END UP IN LEEDS?

Treasured! Smuggled? Stolen? Saved? is a new exhibition at Leeds City Museum that has been devised and curated by a team of 17 young people, aged between 16-24. They have selected the objects, worked on interpretation, written the text, worked on marketing, and generally had a much more active role and higher level of involvement, than the museum usually allows. The exhibition includes a number of objects that have never been on display before and explores how these different and obscure objects have ended up in the museum’s collection. All the objects were treasured in some way. The stories of how they travelled the world and ended up in Leeds invite visitors to question whether they think they were smuggled, stolen or saved. Treasured! Smuggled? Stolen? Saved? is part of Precious Cargo, a project led by young people, inspired by Yorkshire’s world collections. It is one of the projects at the heart of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

BAR HEADED GOOSE SPOTTED ON PAUL’S POND!

One of our readers recently spotted a very rare bird when walking near Breary Marsh and thought others might like to catch a glimpse of it.

GARDENROUND-UP By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural

............................................... In the last few months we have had very adverse weather conditions – heavy rain when we needed to be active in the garden, then hot dry spells, only for it to turn cold again. Up here we are lucky not to have drought restrictions, but use your water wisely. Try putting a small drinks bottle with the base cut off neck down near plants and in hanging baskets and large tubs – that way the water will get to the roots where it is needed. Remember to water early morning and late evening. For those who grow vegetables, they come top of the list for water to ensure good crops. Spraying for aphids should also be done late evening so as not to harm the good insects, particularly bees. Keep picking at salad and herb crops. Pick herbs for drying, or better still for putting in the freezer. The first of your potatos will be ready by the end of the month, especially those grown in buckets. Lift bulbs of shallots carefully with a fork once the leaves have turned yellow and leave them on the surface to dry out. If the weather is wet, store them in and airy place with plenty of light. Pick red, white and black currants and raspberries – once the latter have been picked, cut the old canes at ground level, tying in the new ones as you go.

“I’m a regular reader of North Leeds Life, and as an animal lover I enjoy reading the ‘Bird Watch’ section. I recently went up to Paul’s Pond, near Breary Marsh/Golden Acre and came across an exceptionally rare bird, and managed to get a photo of it. It’s a bar-headed goose, normally found in the Himalayas and surrounding areas of Asian, and they’re the world’s highest flying bird, regularly migrating over Everest. The one I spotted is an escapee from a collection no doubt, but only 60-80 are thought to be in the UK.” Scott Anthony Martin, Far Headingley

The first of your potatos will be ready by the end of the month, especially those grown in buckets Have a pair of secateurs or scissors with you around the garden so you can dead-head as you go. This may appear a boring job but is well worth it as it prolongs the flowering period. Keep cutting Sweet Peas, the more you cut, the more flowers you will have. Take semi-ripe cuttings from shrubs, removing shoots about four inches long with a heel off the old bark. Pinch out the soft top and dip in hormone rooting powder. Place the cuttings round the edge of a pot filled with equal parts of compost and vermiculite, cover with a polythene bag and put in a shady spot. In six to eight weeks they will have rooted and be ready to pot up individually to grow on. For those with ponds, make sure they are kept topped up with water especially if you have fish. Lastly, put out shallow dishes of clean water each day for our feathered friends not only to drink but bathe in. They will repay you by eating grubs and aphids saving you the task of spraying.

Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon

High summer is the best time to seek out the birds of the uplands. A bird which evocatively captures the character of the hills is the golden plover. It is a compact, medium-sized wader with narrow pointed wings and a short bill. In summer plumage, golden plover are spangled black, white and golden yellow above, with a black breast and undersides. By contrast, in winter they are a mottled brown, lacking the conspicuous black.

Golden plover nest on heather moors, blanket bogs and montane tops. Walkers hearing a sad far-carrying piping call are being observed by a solitary male from a tussock or rock as look-out post. They are rather shy and wary. In the winter half-year they move to lowland arable fields, pastures and salt marshes where they may form dense flocks. Flying fast and powerfully, they perform spectacular manoeuvres. Nationally numbers have declined since 1960, possibly due to afforestation and disturbance on their breeding grounds, but they seem relatively stable in the Yorkshire Pennines. The resident birds are heavily outnumbered by the winter visitors from Iceland, Scandinavia and further east.

SOUND & VISION

ALBUM REVIEW

ALT J – AN AWESOME WAVE Over the last few months Alt J, who formed at Leeds University, have been generating a good deal of excitement about this debut album, helped in no small part by the heavy rotation on BBC 6Music of their single, Breezeblocks, an infectious slice of wonky indie-pop. An Awesome Wave is a fine album but, given the ear-catching eccentricity of their breakthrough single, I must say I was expecting something altogether more surprising and exciting. The album as a whole is a fairly low-key, downbeat affair but boasts considered arrangements, textural variety and lyrical and melodic depths that become more apparent with continued listening. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Alt J comfortably slot into the Indie-Dance crossover zone inhabited by the likes of Django Django and The XX but their sound has more in common with the folktronica of Arab Strap et al and Ninja Tune artists such as Fink and Amon Tobin.

The reverb drenched intro sets the tone with resonant piano and skittering beats enveloping subtly twangy guitars. It’s a suitably atmospheric opener which gives way to the a capella harmonies that begin Tesselate, the vocals here, as on Ms, having something of a choral quality and sound as if they could be emanating from a remote monastery.

Despite its recent radio play ubiquity, Breezeblocks still packs a punch. Purportedly inspired by Where the Wild Things Are author, Maurice Sendak, this disarmingly catchy number employs the band’s characteristically intriguing rhythmic approach (thinking outside the box, the drummer is known to use a sauce-

pan in place of a cymbal) and features effective use of singer, Joe Newman’s idiosyncratic vocal style. With its fourteen tracks, the album is perhaps a tad overlong and as such contains a bit of filler but there are more than a few gems to be discovered, for instance Something Good, whose acoustic guitar and rapid-fire staccato drums give way to a lush cascading piano loop and Fitzpleasure with its rumbling bass growl and tentative flirtation with Dubstep. While at times An Awesome Wave smacks of the kind of fare one might find on a ‘Chill Out’ collection, it’s a thoughtful piece of work likely to grow on the listener. Packed with astute references to film and literature and displaying a sound that already seems well honed, this auspicious debut shows Alt J to be a band with both brains and a heart.

SUCCESS FOR ‘ROCK THE HOUSE’ NOMINEES Greg Mulholland MP was delighted when his two nominees in the ‘Rock the House’ finals in London, took second and third places! Greg nominated singer/songwriter Marc Otway in the over 18’s category and he finished in second place, and Korks Wine Bar in Otley came away with third place for best live music venue.

Marc. “I met some amazing people and, best of all, I was photographed with Thin Lizzy drummer Gorham!”

“To get third place out of so many entries is incredible” said Chris Payne of Korks. “Live music is so important and, thanks to our MP, we have raised the visibility of it. I am overjoyed with the result.”

Every MP is invited to nominate a soloartist, a band, an under-18 act and music venue from their constituency. “I am absolutely delighted that both of my nominees did so well”, said Greg. “Marc Otway is such a talented and promising young performer. And, Korks showcases some of the best musical talent around. Well done to both.” “The finals were amazing and the atmosphere was just electric”, said

SOUND & VISION It turns out that the resultant film manages to create a new story based around elements present in 1979’s Alien but is still shot through with a strong strain of alien DNA and is almost impossible not to consider in context of the other four movies. The crux of the story is an alternative creation myth wherein, in the year 2089, a group of scientists led by the somewhat religious Dr Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) discover what they believe to be clues to the origin of human life in the cave paintings of ancient civilizations. Their search takes them light years through space to a distant star system where they hope to encounter the beings that engineered the human race.

PROMETHEUS DIRECTED BY: RIDLEY SCOTT STARRING: : NOOMI RAPACE, MICHAEL FASSBENDER, CHARLIZE THERON, IDRIS ELBA, GUY PEARCE CERT: 15 LENGTH: 124 MINS The announcement that Ridley Scott planned to return to Science Fiction for the first time since 1982’s Blade Runner sent shockwaves of fevered anticipation through the geekosphere. When it was revealed that he would revisit the world of his second feature, the classic Alien, there was a frenzy of online speculation as to how it would

tie in with the other Alien movies and was widely assumed to be a prequel to the original film. However, the filmmakers, somewhat enigmatically, stated that Prometheus would not be directly linked to the rest of the franchise but would be a stand alone feature that takes place ‘in the same universe’ as Alien.

From the outset, it seems like a risky endeavour and something of a crackpot idea (maybe it’s just me) but, nevertheless, the expedition is financed by the shadowy, sinister Weyland corporation and our plucky team are on their way. Needless to say, the whole thing backfires quite spectacularly and what the team uncovers on the foreboding planet they arrive at may threaten the future of humanity. Whoops. On board Prometheus, the spacecraft that ferries them to their destination, is David, an android designed to appear human so as not to freak out the crew, portrayed by Michael Fassbender in

DELIVERING MORE DOOR TO DOOR North Leeds Life are the only local magazines delivered door-to-door in all these local communities: another chilling performance. While David is incapable of experiencing emotions, he still conveys a few degrees more warmth than the frosty Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), a Weyland Corp official overseeing the mission who seems to have her own agenda. Whereas, what made the original Alien so creepily tense and effective was the gloomy, claustrophobic setting of the spacecraft Nostromo, the larger scale and jaw-dropping extra-terrestrial landscapes of Prometheus give the film a grand and ambitious scope. Interestingly, while the film features a number of impressive special effects, the amount of CG imagery was kept to a minimum with Scott preferring to create effects ‘in camera’. This, and the fact that most of the colossal sets were hand built, gives the overall production design a depth lacking in the artificial sheen of most CGI laden movies and is a refreshing return to more old school filmmaking techniques. Many have complained that they were left disappointed by Prometheus, perhaps it wasn’t alieny enough for them, despite attempts by Scott and his team to manage fan’s expectations. True, when viewed alongside its predecessor, the film does beg more questions than it answers but it is still an accomplished, fantastically designed production brutally effective at delivering the visceral shocks that defined the original.

SOUND & VISION

AN ARTISTIC ENTERPRISE THAT’S GATHERING STEAM

Tucked away in an often overlooked corner of the city centre an artistic enterprise is gathering steam, exerting its gravitational pull on creative types across Leeds and beyond. Situated in Byron Street Mills, just off Regent Street, Dots Printhaus is the brainchild of Jonny Akers and Joe Duffield, two friends who share aesthetic sensibilities and a passion for screen printing. Jonny had recently graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from Leeds Met when he met Joe who, having attended art school, was working for White Label Clothing and printing his own work in the shop’s basement. Dots Printhaus is born!

Central to the ethos of Dots is the idea of a creative community, building and maintaining strong relationships with local artists, designers, musicians, DJs, promoters, theatre companies, photographers, pretty much anyone who wants their visual presence rendered by guys with an eye for detail, a commitment to quality and who really care about what they do. What sets Dots apart is that they have no minimum print run. They can cater for those with limited budgets and help people just starting out, who may otherwise struggle to get their designs out there. It also means that they can take on smaller jobs that really interest them. A partnership with illustrators Giving the Dots crew a further edge is their close partnership with illustrators in residence, Stuff & Things. The preternaturally talented and skilful Simon Walker and Sophie Primrose have been producing gig and film posters under this banner for a year and the expert printing prowess of Dots renders their intricate and eye-poppingly detailed designs beautifully. 38 July 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

Over the past year they’ve produced work for many great bands, including The Charlatans, St Vincent and The Mystery Jets. A selection of their work recently featured in an exhibition of the best screen printed poster art from across Europe in Flannels Gallery that ran for two months. Designs for music and film Stuff & Things and Dots have a particularly close association with Leeds-based band ALASKA, through whom they have showcased some of their band merchandise. ALASKA’s CD sleeves, T-shirts, posters, comic strips, and tote bags all feature Simon’s lovingly designed artwork, diligently hand-printed by Jonny and Joe.

Passion, enthusiasm & hard work pay off Whilst both Dots and Stuff & Things are very small companies, their Byron Street Mills headquarters is at the centre of a much larger creative movement of independent thinkers and doers in Leeds, who have been united by the desire to earn a living doing what they love and to be recognised for their individual and collective skills. The ALASKA collaboration is a perfect example of how well integrated and supportive the team is of each other’s endeavours. In relatively short time, Dots reputation for quality has spread rapidly and the initial trickle of orders and offers of work has become a deluge. By virtue of their passion, enthusiasm and formidable work ethic, they are deserving of every success. www.dotsprint.co.uk/

After seeing limited edition, homage posters for cult movies in the States, Simon and Sophie approached Hyde Park Picture House to collaborate on Creatures of the Night, the cinema’s weekly late night screenings of cult classics. Each month Stuff & Things choose the films for which they’d like to produce a screen-printed poster and sell them on a merch table on Whilst the night.

Although original posters and merchandise for bands features largely in Stuff & Things’ output, they’ve recently undertaken on a huge brief for World Vision Charity, designing a storytelling tool to give the many sponsored children involved more of a voice. The last two months of development is now being tested in Bangladesh.

both Dots and Stuff & Things are very small companies, their Byron Street Mills headquarters is at the centre of a much larger creative movement of independent thinkers and doers in Leeds

Bonding over shared tastes in art, design and music, the two soon became residents in Factory 4 art studio space where their partnership began to evolve. It wasn’t long before they realised they were going to need their own workshop. A unit in Byron Street Mills became available (following a police raid on the cannabis farm it had previously housed), and Dots Printhaus was born. Over the past year the workshop has expanded to include a space for band rehearsal and recording, and an illustration studio.

OTLEY ALL SAINTS WIN FAIRTRADE FILM COMPETITION Otley All Saints Primary School recently won a regional film competition and Greg Mulholland MP presented them with their award. The ‘Take a Step’ film competition was organised by Fairtrade Yorkshire. The challenge was to tell the story of a Fairtrade product. Otley All Saints created an informative 40 July 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

and interesting film about the journey of cocoa, from grower to chocolate bar. “It’s a fantastic video”, said Greg Mulholland. “It really gets the point across about the importance of supporting Fairtrade, so well done to all those that took part. I am delighted that Otley All Saints have won. Fairtrade is making a real difference to the lives of millions of people in the developing world, by making sure that farmers are getting a fair deal for their produce, as well as receiving funding that they can put into projects in their communities. It is so important that we get behind the initiative.” Yorkshire is aiming to become the first region in the UK to attain Fairtrade status and is working with schools, MPs, Fairtrade groups, Councils, shops and cafés to raise awareness about Fairtrade. BIG HOO-HA’S ‘GIG IN A WEEK’ SUMMER PROJECT

The Big Hoo-Ha Co is once again running its popular ‘Gig in a Week’ music project for young people aged 12 to 18, from Tuesday 31st July to Saturday 4th August. During the project, led by multi-instrumentalist musicians, the young people work together in bands on their own songs or versions of existing songs. Then, on Saturday evening, they perform at a gig at Otley Courthouse.

The week is often a stepping stone to more involvement in music – for example, four young people who met for the first time at last year’s project went on to form a band which is playing at this year’s CultureShock Festival at the Great Yorkshire Showground

The project takes place at The Woolpack Music Studios on Bondgate, Otley, from 11am – 4pm each day. For further information, contact Richard at info@ bighooha.co.uk or 07956 205151 or www.bighooha.co.uk. Places are limited.

Anybody who loves to sing or plays an instrument (whether it’s an electric guitar, drums, violin, tuba, or anything else!) is welcome. No previous experience is required. Instrumentalists should have a reasonable level of ability, but part of the fun is building confidence and learning new skills. It’s suitable for both experienced players and those at an earlier stage.
