PUPIL FOR A DAY! Mrs Georgie Sale, head teacher at City of Leeds High School, Hyde Park, recently invited Alan Bennett to do ‘An Evening with Alan Bennett’ at the school. Previously, as head teacher at Lawnswood School, she had persuaded him to do the same. Since Alan had attended Lawnswood many years ago he was happy to visit his old school. To tempt him to City of Leeds he was made Honorary Ex Pupil for a day!

We caught up with him outside the hall and took some photos. Before long we were nattering about what was going on in Leeds and his new play ‘People’ at The National Theatre, starring Frances de la Tour, Selina Cadell and Linda Bassett. Actually he gave little away on that count as he is a little superstitious of talking about his plays in advance.

The evening was a sell-out with representation not only from Hyde Park, staff and school governors, but also from Headingley and further afield. He soon had everyone eating out of his hand as he read from plays, diaries and a wide range of other writings, much of which concerned Leeds and growing up in the city. There were great quotes, ranging from nostalgic, poignant and informative to downright hilarious. At the end he was more than willing to answer questions and said he would be happy to come back again.

EVER THOUGHT OF BEING A SCHOOL GOVERNOR? Spring Bank Primary School, a friendly, popular school in the heart of Headingley, is looking for new governors from the local community for their supportive, forward thinking governing body.

In these uncertain times, where austerity and social distress feature regularly in the news and on television, the principles which underlie Freemasonry have never been more relevant and important. Founded on three great principles – brotherly love, relief and truth – it’s the relief or charitable side of Freemasonry that will, perhaps, come as a surprise to many. After the National Lottery, Freemasons are responsible for the most substantial donations to charitable causes, and a great many worthy causes in our local community have benefitted from substantial charitable donations from Freemasons. Local Freemasons (many of whom meet at Castle Grove Masonic Hall in Headingley) have made donations to 14 local hospices in the last year, and to the Yorkshire branch of the British Red Cross towards the purchase of two non-emergency ambulances. Yorkshire Air Ambulance recently received £12,000 from Yorkshire Freemasons.

Governors play a crucial role in supporting and developing schools and becoming a governor can be an excellent way to use and improve your personal skills, whilst making a real difference to children’s life chances.

Whereas there may be some items that drive you to major high street shops, why not plan this year to put the pleasure back into Christmas shopping and visit some of the many independent gift shops and craft markets right on your doorstep.

HEAD FOR HEADINGLEY In Headingley, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find shops like Azendi, with its gorgeous silver jewellery, and an interesting selection of gifts at Tableau. The Bowery (A), on the corner of Grove Lane, showcases the work of emerging artists and designer/makers, with jewellery, ceramics, prints, textiles, cards and handy gift vouchers. Across the road (opposite Arcadia) is the fabulous wool shop Baa Ram Ewe (B) which, as well as wool, has a lovely selection of wool-related gifts, including beautiful knitting needles, handmade buttons and brooch pins. If you are wondering what to buy for the artist in your family, nip along to Dinsdales (C) on Chapel Lane â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the only independent art supply shop in Leeds. Graeme stocks a great range of paints, inks, pencils, papers, markers etc. and has some superb boxed gift sets. At the moment he has really good deals on large easels and is offering 33% off a range of Airfix.

MARKETS ADD TO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT You can look forward to two Heart & Craft (D) shows at HEART on Bennett Road. Scheduled for Saturday 10th November and 8th December, you’ll find some lovely unique gifts – including extraordinary Biro art, handmade soap, silk scarves, soft toys, jewellery and ceramics. And, don’t forget Christkindelmarkt, the traditional German Christmas Market in Millennium Square, which runs from 9th November – 16th December. You may have noticed how the Artsmix markets, held on Albion Street, have been getting better

and better over the last year. They are planning to hold markets every weekend in November and December. There is a fantastic variety of beautifully made gifts and you get to chat with the makers. We mentioned Bird’s Yard (E) last month. With all its little designer and vintage shops it’s a mini market in its own right and worthy of a long browse, punctuated with tea and cake in the Marvellous Tea Shop, of course! It is full of surprises and wonderfully unique gifts. E

THE CHAPEL ALLERTON EXPERIENCE Stop off in Chapel Allerton – no, not for just an hour! Make it at least half a day. After all there are cafes, restaurants and bakeries to take advantage of along the way. These little luxuries are all part of Christmas shopping. Spoil yourself a little and the whole experience is a lot more enjoyable! The Glasshouse Gallery (F) is packed with fantastic ideas, many made right there in the shop or in their workshop in Knaresborough. The first thing that will hit you is colour. Stained glass, jewellery, art, beautiful prints, quirky ornaments that aren’t just beautifully made, but also full of humour. A visit always puts me in a good mood. What’s more, they offer an ‘affordable art’ scheme – fancy a little sculpture or piece of art but find it a bit more than you can afford right now? Put a deposit on it and it’s yours when you finish paying it off – and no interest!

YES, THERE IS AN INDEPENDENT BOOKSHOP! Just a few doors down is Radish Books (A) (one of only two independent bookshops in the area – the other being Philip Howard Books on Street Lane). In addition to a great selection of books, Radish also has an extensive range of Fair Trade clothing, jewellery and accessories. They offer both book and shop gift tokens and there are some interesting local books that make great gifts, like Mick McCann’s ‘How Leeds Changed the World’ for adults and Gillian Rogerson’s ‘Children’s History of Leeds’.

Also on this strip is Angels with its stained glass Angels, handmade in Chapel Allerton, American folk art Angels from Crazy Mountain, plus lovely children’s gifts, Christmas decorations, jewellery and other ranges of handmade giftware. Angels Too, a couple of doors down, has an extensive range of unusual cards as well as striking jewellery designs. Casa Blanca, on the corner of Regent Street, has an eclectic

mix of gifts including a fabulous range of home accessories, much of which is food related, but also glassware, lampshades, picture frames and wall art. Ooops! I almost forgot the children! Armadillo (B) Toys is just seconds away, with a great selection of games and puzzles, wooden toys, Playmobil and Galt toys, puppets, dressing up, and educational toys. There is also a branch in Horsforth.

BEARS TO DIE FOR! Horsforth, with its three shopping areas – Station Road, Town Street and New Road Side – is also a great destination for a giftshopping safari. Start on Station Road with Wrapped (C). The shop may be small but it has an amazing collection of absolutely gorgeous gifts – striking jewellery, fabulous Italian bags and scarves, beautiful baby gifts, and things you would never have thought of! They also have a range of nice gifts for men, including stylish clocks, cufflinks, wallets and more. And then there are the bears – Charlie Bears. On my last visit I met ‘Phileas’, a three-foot high bear just full of character. Whereas his price matched his height, there were many others of all shapes and sizes, each one with a character all its own.

Charlie Bears was started in Cookridge seven years ago by Charlotte Morris. Since then Charlotte has moved to Devon and Charlie Bears have become collectors’ items.

This American range tempts you with candles that sound as good as they smell – Brown Sugar and Cinnamon, Napa Valley Sun.

Then it’s on to New Road Side where ‘Card inc chocolatiers’ is ready to tempt you with great cards, delicious Belgian chocolates, hand painted glass, jewellery and more! FASHION IS NOT ALL ABOUT LONDON! This was the message from Colin McDowell MBE, one of the most senior voices on fashion in the UK, when he introduced ‘Wool Re-Fashioned’, a free exhibition running until 11th November in Gallery 2, Salt’s Mill, Saltaire. ‘Wool Re-Fashioned’ is an innovative collaboration between the Yorkshire Fashion Archive at Leeds University, and The Woolmark Company. It showcases one-off pieces from the Yorkshire Fashion Archive by designers such as Issey Miyake, Ossie Clark and Comme des Garcon, donated by people here in Yorkshire, alongside a redesign of those pieces by Leeds University design students, using wool fabric and contemporary techniques. Using luxurious, fine Merion wools, produced by companies like Abraham Moon and Laxtons in Guiseley, the young designers mixed and matched textures and techniques (including French pleating and laser cut designs) to create garments for today with a nod to the past. “This Archive is so important”, said Colin McDowell. “In this exhibition we are drawing on the past to inspire the future. The relationship between design and society is vital.” He went on to talk about the important part this region has played in the industry and still does – Yorkshire mills supply major fashion houses around the world, including Vivienne Westwood and Burberry, in fact Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s Design Director, is patron of the Yorkshire Fashion Archive. ARCHIBALD WITHAM SCARR (1827-1904) From Barrow-boy to Mayor of Leeds

Most people have heard the story of how Michael Marks, founder of Marks and Spencer, began his meteoric career running a stall in Leeds Kirkgate Market in the 1880s. One of his fellow market traders also won fame in his day, becoming a household name in Leeds as the ‘Mayor of the masses’. This was the redoubtable Archie Scarr, who spent all his working life in Kirkgate Market while making his mark as a hugely popular figure in local politics and a powerful spokesman for the working man. Archie was born across the Pennines in Burnley, in 1827. His parents were grocers and tea dealers, but times were hard and when Archie was thirteen the family moved to Leeds where his father set up a vegetable stall in Vicar’s Croft, Kirkgate, then the open marketplace for the town. The family lived in the grim, impoverished area of the Leylands, and money was tight. Archie found work in a warehouse but helped on the stall evenings and weekends. He would load any unsold vegetables onto a barrow and hawk them round the streets. He soon took over on the stall, and got a reputation for hard work, thrift, and a head for business. He was up at 2am on market days to meet the market gardeners coming to town and strike the best deal. When his father died in 1855 he took over the business, acquired a permanent stall (and shoes instead of clogs), and later, as the market buildings expanded, took on several more shops. It was in the hubbub of the market that Archie developed his formidable skills in quick-witted argument and repartee, entertaining and winning over his customers – they found themselves buying whatever he had on offer! When he expanded the business into dried fruit, especially figs, his cry ‘come and get your scripture fruit’ became famous as his slogan – leading to many a later joke! Archie, brought up a Wesleyan, was a passionate teetotaller all his life and a fervent and active supporter 18 November 2012 northleedslife.co.uk

of the temperance movement. His other major interest in his early years was political reform. In his early thirties he joined the Leeds Working Men’s Parliamentary Reform Association and began to speak at meetings and rallies. At one of the big reform meetings at the Town Hall in 1861 he spoke up passionately for working men’s right to the vote and their vital contribution to the life of the nation. He was chosen to be a member of the Leeds delegation to Parliament in 1866, in the lead-up to the 1867 Reform Act, which finally enfranchised most working men. He turned then to local politics, a trenchant critic of what he saw as the Council’s mismanagement of rate-payers’ money. In 1869 he was proposed by the Liberals for election to the Council. It was claimed he would not be a silent member and

no ‘hole and corner work’ would escape him! He was elected in 1872 and was certainly not silent. A lively, humorous, contentious speaker, he intervened on behalf of the working people who funded the Council, opposing what he saw as extravagance and supporting local residents in conflict with Council plans. In industrial disputes he took the workers’ side and offered money in support. His robust down-to-earth style made him immensely popular with working people, and when he failed to be elected Alderman in 1877 (words like ‘rough’ and ‘vulgar’ were used) there was a mass protest. One issue which had caused problems was his utter determination never to don an official robe, even for a Royal visit – this made national news. His refusal to ‘dress up’ of course made him even more popular. He was finally elected Alderman in 1880, and Mayor in 1887, in spite of some opposition. He was delighted and proud, bought a new silk hat (no robe!), locked up the mayoral wine cellar, and among other events organised a huge free gala in Roundhay Park for the people of Leeds. After an unsuccessful attempt to stand for Parliament, Archie remained a vociferous member of the Council until 1898, served as a magistrate, and still went down to Kirkgate market every day. He had a good life – two happy marriages, children, travel abroad, good friends, a successful business. Only one event marred his last years, when he was attacked in the street and robbed. He never quite recovered. He died in 1904 and was buried at Lawnswood. In the same year the magnificent new Kirkgate Market building, which still stands today with its magical skyline of towers and minarets, was opened. A pity he could not be there.

Ten years earlier Thomas and Mary Fairburn shared a house with the Ripleys (son in law Tom and daughter Sarah) at 106 Otley Road.

Thomas Fairburn and his children (Frederick, Sarah, Walter and Albert) were to have a significant impact on the Leeds culinary scene. By 1901 Albert was the publican of the Spacey Houses Inn at Follifoot, Walter was a restaurant manager and Frederick ran a confectionery and bakery. The first of five Fairburn restaurants was opened in the 1880s in the centre of Leeds, to be followed by the Albert, the Athenaeum, the City and the White Horse restaurant on Boar Lane. The family’s connection with Leeds restaurants lasted into the 1970s through Thomas’ grandsons. Sarah, had worked in the restaurants as a waitress, whilst Tom Ripley may well have worked as cashier. By 1911 he was the owner of a malt vinegar brewery, possibly the Yorkshire Malt Vinegar Brewery Company on Kirkstall Road. At the time of the 1911 census Mary Fairburn, now a widow, was living in Fairdene with one servant. She was to die three years later. In view of their earlier living arrangements, it is perhaps appropriate that Thomas and Mary share a gravestone with Sarah and Tom in Lawnswood Cemetery. Doug Kemp www.westparkresidents.org.uk

WAR HORSE – THE CONCERT COMES TO CITY VARIETIES This month, Michael Morpurgo will present ‘War Horse – The Concert’ at City Varieties and, with the stage show scheduled to play at Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre next May, what a great opportunity to get a taste of what is in store. War Horse –The Concert is made up of readings, fused together by music performed by award-winning duo John Tams and Barry Coope. John wrote the music for the original stage production. The music is based on folk songs of the period and soldier’s songs and weaves its way through the show, holding it together emotionally. We called Michael on his farm in Devon to find out a little more. First of all, what was his inspiration for War Horse? “I meet people and they tell me things”, he told us. “This was a chance meeting in a local pub 35 years ago. I started talking to an elderly man who turned out to be one of three old men living in the village who had been soldiers in the First World War. Aged just 17 he was in the Devon Yeomanry – as he said he was ‘there with the horses’. He lived alongside his horse and that horse was his best friend – he ‘could tell him anything’. That’s where it started. A million horses went to France, 65,000 came back. This was a new way to write about the war, through the eyes of a horse.”

It was tighter.” You might think that one book about the First World War might be enough – but, as Michael says, people tell him things. This time it was the story of Walter Tull who grew up in an orphanage, played football for Spurs, then joined up with his pals when war began in 1914. He was the only black soldier to serve in the British Army at that time. Incredibly brave, he died leading his men into attack in 1918. ‘A Medal for Leroy’, published by Harper Collins Children’s Books, is dedicated to his memory.

Michael was delighted, if a little pessimistic, when the idea of adapting his book to the stage with puppets was put to him. Wouldn’t it be laughable? But, as he says, over the next two years director Tom Morris brought together amazing people, including South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, to create a piece of theatre that is beautifully observed. From a little book in 1982, War Horse is now a million seller and the stage production has been a hit not only in The West End, but on Broadway, in Toronto, and is going on to tour Australia, the US, the UK and Ireland, and Berlin. “What’s great”, said Michael, “is that they didn’t just sit back. A CHRISTMAS CRACKER FROM NORTHERN BALLET YORKSHIRE AIR MUSEUM WINS TOURISM AWARD The Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial were recently awarded Tourism Event of the Year for their ‘The French in York Week’ at the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards. The series of events, devised by Museum Director Ian Reed and his team, celebrated and commemorated the 2,500 French Airmen who fought in WWII, and were based at the site of the Museum, former RAF Elvington, York. The event took two years to arrange, and involved the retail, business and residential community of York. It succeeded in raising the profile of the Museum and Memorial as well as the City itself.

Northern Ballet brings everyone’s favourite Christmas story to life with the revival of one of the Company’s most loved productions, ‘The Nutcracker’, at the Grand Theatre from Tuesday 18th – Sunday 30th December. The Nutcracker is a seasonal favourite told in a traditional way. Amidst the Christmas commotion the fire crackles and the pile of presents grows ever higher. As the clock strikes midnight Clara’s Nutcracker doll proves to be no ordinary toy. She is swept away by her Nutcracker prince into a magical winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes and the famous Sugar Plum Fairy. “People like to return to ‘The Nutcracker’ because it reminds them of childhood and that magical time when your dreams can become reality”, said Northern Ballet’s Artistic director, David Nixon. He has set his version in the Regency period. The festivities are captured by Charles Cusick Smith’s striking set designs, David’s vivid costumes, and Mark Jonathan’s lighting. Tchaikovsky’s beautiful score is arranged by John Longstaff and performed by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

A BLUE PLAQUE FOR JRR TOLKIEN North Leeds gained a historic new landmark recently when a commemorative plaque was unveiled at 2 Darnley Road, West Park, the former home of the renowned academic and writer, J.R.R. Tolkien. Although more commonly associated with Oxford, where he achieved international fame as author of the much loved books, ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’, it was actually at Leeds that Tolkien began his career as an academic. Working in the Department of English at the University of Leeds from 1920-1925, Tolkien quickly established himself as a renowned scholar in the academic world by co-authoring a translation of the medieval poem ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’. But it may well also have been during his time at Leeds that his imagination began to shape the characters and scenes that

would later become familiar to so many readers. “It’s fascinating to think that the world Tolkien created was evolving in his mind as he enjoyed woodland walks in the Meanwood Valley in the 1920s”, said Dr. Kevin O’Grady, Director of Leeds Civic Trust. Members of the Tolkien Society, together with a delegation from Leeds Civic Trust, the University of Leeds and the West Park Residents Association attended the unveiling, which was performed by Dr. Kersten Hall of the University of Leeds. Commenting on the plaque’s significance, Dr. Hall said: “According to a BBC poll, J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is officially the nation’s favourite book. The city of Leeds deserves to be proud that its local heritage is connected to a literary figure who is cherished not just here in the UK, but also across the world.”

‘THE BELLS’ IN LEEDS TOWN HALL Leeds Festival Chorus and the BBC Philharmonic will perform a concert on Saturday 24th November at Leeds Town Hall, and Rachmaninov’s choral symphony, ‘The Bells’, one of the composer’s favourite works, will be included.

Leeds Philharmonic Chorus has performed the Messiah on countless occasions, including at London’s Albert Hall. However, on Saturday 15th December, in Leeds Town Hall, it will present a Messiah with a difference. Instead of the more usual orchestral accompaniment, the Chorus will team up with the multi award-winning Black Dyke Band, one of oldest and best-known brass bands in the world.

On Thursday 13th December, and also in Leeds Town Hall, the Phil will also perform in the Lord Mayor’s Carol Concerts. The Phil will be joined by the Halifax Choral Society and Leeds-based St Peter’s Singers, giving an even stronger Yorkshire flavour. The Phil’s Music Director, David Hill, will conduct. Tickets cost from £16 to £31 (concessions available).

Looking for inspiration for a new choral piece whilst on holiday in Rome, he opened an anonymous letter – it was a copy of ‘The Bells’. The symphony is a setting for a translation into Russian of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem. Written shortly before his death in 1849, it is one of Poe’s most famous works. It has four parts, and becomes darker and darker as it progresses, reminding the reader or listener of Poe’s reputation as a writer in the Gothic horror genre. Heavily onomatopoeic, it is definitely a poem for reading out loud, full of the sounds of bells and invoking the feelings they produce. “It is difficult to rehearse”, said one Leeds Festival Chorus member. “But we have a good Russian tutor, and it will be well worth it when we have learned it. It is extremely powerful.” Another of Rachmaninov’s personal favourites was ‘Vespers’, which is also on the programme. Leeds Festival Chorus sang this previously in the open air during Leeds Light Night, and has been invited to sing it in St Mark’s Basilica in Venice next year. .............................................. There may still be a few autumn flowers left in sheltered spots â&#x20AC;&#x201C; asters, nerines, and a few late roses. There is probably still some autumn foliage waiting to drop. Keep on collecting these leaves (as they can be a hazard) and either bag them up or put into a chicken wire container to rot down.

with Stan Kenyon The little grebe is a small elusive water bird that likes to hide in waterside vegetation, swims buoyantly and dives often. Smaller than a teal, it is rotund and almost tailless with a short neck and bill. General colouration is brown and buff in Autumn and Winter, but by Spring it develops chestnut cheeks and neck and a pale yellow spot at the base of its bill. In Summer its whinnying trill often betrays its presence.

Winter prune fruit trees and bushes and plant any new ones. Tidy up borders and beds but leave some seed heads for the birds. If not too wet, keep the edges of lawns neat â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it does make a difference! Protect tender plants from winter weather. This is also a good time to lift and divide rhubarb crowns and replant in well dug and manured ground. Lift and store dahlia tubers too and store in a dry place. Heliborus Niger seldom flowers in time for Christmas, but can be brought on a little earlier by covering with a cloche which protects them from soil splashes. Protect the tender bulbs of agapanthus and nerines with a thick mulch of garden compost. These are best grown in a sheltered spot or the base of a south facing wall or fence. You can also plant broad bean and pea seeds under cloches for an early harvest. Try digging up a pot full of Lily of the Valley rhizomes, pot them up place them in a frost free greenhouse or conservatory to grow at their own pace. You can bring them into flower quicker by placing them in warmer conditions. After flowering and scenting your home they can be planted back outside and will flower again next year. Examine the bulbs you have planted and, once they have reached an inch or so, move them into a cool greenhouse or cold frame. Once they start to form buds bring into warmer conditions. Start to harvest Brussel sprouts picking from the bottom upwards, parsnips too can be lifted and, like sprouts, they taste better after a frost. This month is the last chance in the current year to lay turf for new lawns. One advantage it that it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t dry out. Little grebes breed on still or slow-moving fresh waters. Wellvegetated lakes, ponds, rivers and canals are favoured. In Winter some move to sheltered coastal bays and in spells of severe frost there is a general exodus from nesting areas to larger rivers and the coast. Because they are susceptible to prolonged cold, little grebes can suffer heavy losses. Though not common, this secretive bird is easily overlooked so it is more numerous than may be suspected. Winter numbers are swelled by migrants from the continent.

2013 CALENDAR

Friends of Roundhay Park (FoRP) have just launched their 2013 calendar featuring 12 beautiful photographs of the Park. “This is the third year we’ve produced a calendar”, said Cecily Jarvis, calendar production coordinator. “In previous years we have sold out by the end of November and we expect to do the same this year. We only produce 750, so they have become something of a collector’s item. We know that many end up overseas, where they have been sent as gifts to people with Roundhay connections.” The group’s first calendar was financed through a mixture of loans from members and commercial sponsorship. This year the production costs have been met entirely through sponsorship.

The Leeds Helideck Heroes Calendar for 2013 features pictures of the volunteer crew, whose role is vital to ensure the safety of landings at LGI by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. All the crew have day jobs as facilities staff at the hospital, and have undergone grueling firefighter training. The calendar shows different aspects of the team’s work high above the rooftops of Leeds, as well as some shots of training. Most show the fire crew at work and different seasons - including clearing the helicopter deck of snow last winter. Ben Affleck’s new comic thriller ‘Argo’ will open the 26th Leeds International Film Festival at Leeds Town Hall on Thursday 1st November. The film, based on the true story of a CIA expert posing as a film director in order to infiltrate Iran and rescue of a group of stranded Americans in 1979, is a strong contender for the Oscars. Leeds International Film Festival, organised by Leeds City Council, is the largest UK film festival held outside London. It runs from 1st – 18th November and will show more than 150 feature films, over 130 short films, and nearly 250 screening events. Among other highlights, there will be a retrospective of Stanley Kubrick, with new digital print screenings of ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, ‘Barry Lyndon’ and the ‘The Shining’. What’s impressive about Looper is its unpredictability, one remains riveted throughout as it’s impossible to guess where things are heading. While you’re still grappling with the complexities of the initial premise (and contemplating the machinations and implications of time travel is always going to set one’s head spinning), the film suddenly takes a detour in an entirely unexpected and surprising direction. Johnson’s confident directorial style keeps things pacy and dynamic and elicits solid work from his cast. Gordon-Levitt here further secures his leading man credentials while Emily Blunt reasserts her status as one to watch. There’s a very amusing turn from Jeff Daniels as a crime boss from the future and Bruce Willis … well, he just sort of works that Bruce Willis thing he does, which is always kind of brilliant. The guy’s like a human special effect. Built around an ingenious and intriguing central conceit, the film is an example of sci-fi at its best; high concept but low-tech with the futuristic aspect played down choosing instead to use the scope of the genre to explore ideas rather than dazzle us with flashy gadgets. I’d decided I wanted to see the film again before it had even finished. Looper is a wild ride, a deliriously enjoyable movie which delivers cerebral thrills along with explosive action and a refreshing dose of humour.

OUTSTANDING RESULTS FOR RICHMOND HOUSE For the past two years, Richmond House School in Far Headingley has

received a 100% pass rate in the English Speaking Board Exams, taken

by Year 5 pupils as part of their drama work. What’s more, all of the pupils received a merit grade or higher. In fact, this year 52% of the 21 participating pupils receiving a distinction and 43% a merit plus. The English Speaking Board is a national awards body that provides graded assessments from Key Stage 1 to Advanced Level standard in Spoken English. The exam involves children giving a talk, reciting a poem and preparing a reading. “The exams are extremely worthwhile”, said Julie Godsave, Deputy Head. “They contribute to the development of important social and life skills, as well as helping children to grow in confidence.”

Lawnswood School is holding its fourth annual Art & Design Technology Exhibition on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th November from 6 – 8pm. The exhibition will showcase the very best of Lawnswood talent in paintings, drawings, sculpture, textiles, 3D and multimedia from across all year groups. This joint project between school staff, ‘Friends of Lawnswood’ and Lawnswood Sixth Form, provides the unique opportunity for sixth formers to gain experience in curating and having responsibility for key elements of the show. The standard of work continues to be exceptionally high and, as in previous years, there will be an opportunity to commission and purchase particular pieces. Entry is free. There will be music from students and Lawnswood Community choir on both evenings, and refreshments will be provided. The audience is encouraged to vote for their favourite piece and the winner will be awarded a prize. It promises to be an inspirational as well as celebratory event.
