Ricky Feather – Feather Cycles A near fanatical pursuit of clean lines gives Feather Cycles an elegance you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere.
Dear Readers,
I feel we are hurtling towards the end of the year and I am still in denial about Christmas! There seems to be so much else going on. We are still in the afterglow of the Olympics/ Paralympics – just today I was in Millennium Square celebrating our Paralympians’ achievements. Didn’t they do us proud! It was lovely to chat to Hurricane Hannah, Claire Cashmore, David Stone and Ali Jawad. This month, with cycling having been such a success this Summer, we take a look at the work of specialist bike maker, Ricky Feather. We also wander into Bird’s Yard and discover a treasure trove of creativity and vintage fashion. We talk to director Sarah Esdaile as she starts rehearsals of Tennessee Williams’ ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof ’ at the West Yorkshire Playhouse; and have a quick word with Chantel McGregor who has just won a British Blues Award for the second year running. Younger members of the community can look forward to great entertainment with Mimika Children’s Theatre at HEART; and two of Northern Ballet’s dancers have choreographed a short ballet especially for short people! HEART is also hosting Apple Day – a celebration of all things apple related. There’s also news of successful fundraising at the first Adel Beer Festival and the Parkside Allotments Show. St George’s Crypt is appealing for help to restock their larder. And, Guide Dogs are looking for early rising volunteers! What did I say about hurtling towards the end of the year? Do send us your news for our November edition. We may very well mention Christmas this time! Deadline is 1st October for editorial and 5th October for advertising. We look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards
Carole, Jack and the team

Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, has expressed concern at the proposed closure of six fire stations in Leeds including Cookridge station. LEEDS SKYRACK LIONS HOST
42ND YOUTH EXCHANGE
HOLLYBUSH CONSERVATION CENTRE CELEBRATES Hollybush Conservation Centre, a branch of The Conservation Volunteers in Kirkstall, recently celebrated its achievements at its annual volunteers’ party. Hollybush is just one of 1,424 UK sites to receive a Green Flag Award in 2012. This national award recognises efforts made towards ensuring that more people have access to well-managed, high-quality green spaces. Hollybush achieved this by offering a plethora of greenfingered activities to the surrounding community in its extensive gardens.
In July this year, the 42nd exchange took place. A party of 25 German guests, including disabled young people, many of whom had not had a holiday abroad before, their carers and Lions helpers, were entertained for five days with a fabulous programme arranged by Leeds, Leeds Skyrack, York, Otley, Knaresborough, Garforth and District Lions Clubs. They were welcomed to Leeds by the Lord Mayor at a reception at the Civic Hall, they enjoyed canal and river excursions, visits to stately homes, theatres and clubs, a theme park and a zoo, shopping expeditions in Leeds and York, evening entertainment, not to mention their introduction to Yorkshire food and drink! Now Leeds Lions Clubs are looking forward to 2013, when a party of young Leeds people with disabilities will have the opportunity to spend a similar holiday in Germany – thanks to 08 October 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk
contributions from the people of Leeds. Twenty five German guests were entertained for five days with a fabulous programme arranged by Leeds, Leeds Skyrack, York, Otley, Knaresborough, Garforth and District Lions Clubs.

Leeds Skyrack Lions Club is involved with many charitable projects, one of which is a Youth Exchange programme with the Bad Sooden-Allendorf Lions Club in Germany.
Hollybush also marked its designation as a ‘Green Hub’, a focal point for care of local green places, designed around the needs of the local community and environment. The spotlight was also on individual volunteers for contributions to the work of Hollybush over the past year – from completing studies towards NVQ qualifications to consistent volunteering in the gardens or on conservation task days. “This is our opportunity to thank the City Council, Big Lottery and other funders and to mark the achievements of our fantastic volunteers”, said Mark Gibson, Northern Director of The Conservation Volunteers. One of those notices appears out of the blue attached to a telegraph pole. Never seen it before. It must be another planning application - you know, for a two storey side extension with Juliet balcony sort of thing. But this one is different. On closer examination we learn that they are considering lowering the speed limit along the A660 through Adel to 30 mph and to 50mph from the outskirts of Adel towards Bramhope. It all seems very democratic. After all they are only thinking about the idea and you can lodge any objections by a certain date. You could write in and say you are against the idea or perhaps object that it’s going to take you three minutes longer to get from A-B . But there’s just something about these notices that give you the feeling you’d be wasting your time. Doubtless in due course we shall be solemnly informed that all objections have been overruled. Someone who knows about these things has decided

The Council is looking forward to celebrating Hope in the Park, organised by Horsforth Churches Together. Other official events include the Town Council Civic Service on 7th October at Lister Hill Baptist Church (see www. horsforthchurchestogether.btck.co.uk for details). Congratulations to the gardeners for their efforts with the Diamond Jubilee Garden. With a maintenance contract in place, the garden is already a space enjoyed by many. The Council also welcomes our newest PCSOs and thanks them for their dedicated work in Horsforth. Co-operation on the streets is vital to maintaining the safety and security of Horsforth. The Planning committee is in the middle of the consultation period for the Horsforth Neighbourhood Plan. Please 10 October 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk
Whilst we’re getting up to speed, what are we to make of those 20mph zones springing up close to schools? The government reckons that wherever there is a history of accidents the cost of creating a 20mph zone is typically recovered within a couple of years. The council’s first venture into 20mph zones has been encouraging. A year ago it introduced zones close to six Leeds schools with high accident records. The resulting 10% reduction in accidents covered the outlay within the year. Where else can you get a 100% return on your investment? Leeds is now going to spend £216,000 introducing 20mph zones around another 14 schools and two colleges, where there has been a history of four or more casualties over the past five years. Another spin-off from all of this is that the safer environment might encourage more children to walk and cycle to school. Maybe – but try telling that to those doting parents who would drop their youngsters off in the classroom itself if they had half the chance. clive.fox@leeds.gov.uk contact Leeds City Council Planning Department if you have any comments on the proposed plan. The adoption of a Neighbourhood Plan will allow Horsforth to have a greater say in any future planning proposals for the township.

REFUSE COLLECTION: BINS LEFT ON THE STREET Residents have asked me what the rule is with regards to bins being left on the street after collection. If the collection takes place when no one is home, and they don’t return until later that evening, they obviously cannot replace their bins immediately. I am advised that: “Wheeled bins can cause obstructions to pedestrians if they are left on the street after collection. Once empty they can also blow over causing problems to road users. Wheeled bins should be placed out on the day of collection and returned to your property after collection. It is not permissible to leave your bin on the road or footpath the day after collection has taken place.” RAGWORT Parks & Countryside advise that the majority of their budget to treat ‘invasives’ is used on Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed but they do follow the Ragwort Code of Practice to minimise the spread to grazing land and hay production. Ragwort is not classed as a notifiable weed but is listed as an injurious weed and is not required to be reported by landowners. There is a well defined practice to stop the spread of ragwort and, where it may cause a problem, the Council will put this in place. www.barryanderson.yourcllr. com
A NEW FORUM FOR ADEL
CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence
A formal application has been made to Leeds City Council to establish a Neighbourhood Forum for Adel. The purpose of the Forum is to enable local people to have some influence over where developments can go and how they might look. A Neighbourhood Plan will be produced. A small working group (Nick Brown, my Co-Chairman, and I, together with Councillor Barry Anderson and others) have sounded out the views of residents, businesses and other interested parties on land development and its impact on social, transport and education issues. The considerable interest and support received has encouraged us to take this next important step. We will build on the earlier work of the Adel Neighbourhood Design Statement. However we need to go further, particularly on pro-development issues, and consider the community’s needs in 15 – 20 years. There is also a need to establish a formal team of 21 Members. The Forum will probably meet quarterly with the bulk of the consultation and work being conducted through smaller sub groups. In this way we intend to engage fully with the community to ensure that voices are heard and understood. We would like to hear from you, particularly if are an Adel resident, individual, parent or business owner, and have an interest in establishing priorities for development in the area. Perhaps you are a Senior Citizen with concerns about future housing, or a young person with views on local facilities. Please contact me or Nick Brown at the addresses below. HARVEST HOME – CRYPT APPEALS FOR HARVEST GIFTS The 2012 St George’s Crypt Harvest Appeal is underway and The Crypt is encouraging schools, churches and businesses to respond with their usual generosity. This is traditionally a time when the Leeds-based charity stocks up on non-perishable foods which help its kitchen staff provide hearty meals for its clients throughout the year. “We are also always delighted to receive toiletries – soap, deodorant and shampoo
– as these are increasingly expensive to purchase”, said the Crypt’s Fundraising and PR Director, Martin Patterson. “Our cupboards are quite bare at the moment and ready to be filled up by the usual generosity of people of Leeds.” St George’s Crypt has been providing hope and support for the hundreds who access the charity’s services every week since founder Don Robins first opened the doors in 1930 and welcomed people into the Crypt.

Ricky Feather – Feather Cycles Ricky Feather is earning himself an international reputation as a master craftsman and his exquisite hand built bicycles are much coveted among bike enthusiasts. Ricky’s been into bikes for as long as he can remember. He was up and about on two wheels at age three and was getting his hands dirty repairing his own bike before he was in his teens. So, Feather Cycles seems to be the realisation of a lifelong vocation. For years, Ricky’s primary interest in cycling centred around BMX, as he honed his stunt riding skills miraculously avoiding broken bones until he reached pro level. But he was always eyeing up other bike designs and styles. Having carefully learned his trade as a metal worker and welder, he started designing his bikes while living in Headingley. Today Ricky toils away in a workshop located on his in-laws farm near York. In the three short years he has been building bikes professionally, he has successfully carved out a niche doing what he loves. Feather Cycles are lovingly handcrafted machines, as luxurious to ride as they are beautiful to behold. Ricky is proud that he’s helping to raise people’s awareness of the fact that there is an alternative to factory-manufactured, mass produced bikes.
Buying a Feather Cycle is altogether a more personal and rewarding experience than picking a bike off a rack. Each bike is built with the rider in mind. Clients regularly visit Ricky at his workshop and demonstrate riding their existing bike so he can get an idea of their particular requirements, which aspects should be adjusted, changed or specifically designed to ensure that the finished bike works for them. A self-confessed perfectionist, Ricky is the first to acknowledge that the devil is in the detail. A near fanatical pursuit of clean lines in the construction of his bikes gives Feather Cycles an elegance you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere. Personal touches like hand-filed joints, ornate down tube designs and hand-polished, stainless steel lugs really set these bikes apart. Distinguished by a pride in, and devotion to the craft, a Feather Cycle is a bike like no other, built for you and built to last.
The hand-built cycle scene is a flourishing cottage industry and Ricky now finds himself as one of the most renowned proponents. Helped in no small part by British cycling successes at the London Olympics and Bradley Wiggins’ emergence as celebrity sportsman du jour, the country now finds itself in the grip of cycling fever.
“Feather Cycles are lovingly

“
With a deep loathing of internet shopping, Ricky prefers to buy his tools and materials as locally as possible. He relies on UK based firm Reynolds for his steel tubing, and works regularly in conjunction with a local wheel builder, a mechanic and a painter, and there is a well stocked hardware store in the nearby village. There is a sense of community among UK bike builders, which is important to Ricky as he values the mutual support and encouragement of others on the scene. He has recently collaborated on a book about the industry, ‘Made in England’, which offers an insight into the artisans currently working in the field, their methods and craftsmanship. THEY LIVED IN LEEDS Ellen Heaton (1816-1894) Art Collector, Patron and Benefactor
Today people from all over the world come to the Tate Gallery in London to see its exceptional collection of work by famous artists like JMW Turner and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The Tate collection includes a number of pictures by these artists which 150 years ago used to hang on the walls of a house in Woodhouse Square, Leeds. Now the Swarthmore Education Centre, it was then the home of Ellen Heaton who, unusually for a woman in the mid 1800s, commissioned and collected what was then daring modern art from little-known artists. Her guide and mentor was John Ruskin. Ellen was born in 1816, the daughter and eldest child of Ann and John Heaton. Her father was a bookseller and druggist (a not uncommon combination!) whose business and home was in Briggate. She was a bright girl, but while her younger brother John Deakin Heaton was encouraged to study medicine and qualify as a doctor, her formal education followed the expected pattern for girls, ending with a ‘finishing’ school. But she was not content with conventional female domesticity. She was determined to pursue her interests in literature and the arts – she wrote poetry, joined the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society, was a member of Leeds Library and various learned societies, and corresponded with authors she admired. When her father retired, the family moved to Park Square, and after her mother’s death she stayed there, looking after her father until he died in 1852. He had already provided for her, perhaps when it seemed unlikely that she would marry, but on his death she inherited property and investments which gave her complete financial independence. She was free now to travel, to explore her interests in art, to buy what she wanted. She had read and admired John Ruskin’s book ‘Modern Painters’ and turned to him for advice. He responded enthusiastically, guiding her firmly towards Turner and the younger Pre-Raphaelites like 18 October 2012 northleedslife.co.uk
Rossetti. She mostly followed his advice (though did not like Holman Hunt!), and over the years bought eight paintings from Turner and eight from Rossetti, as well as pictures by Hughes and Inchbold. She got to know Rossetti well and also his sister, the much-loved poet Christina Rossetti; both were later to visit her in Leeds. In 1853 she travelled to Italy with an older friend, (Euphrasia) Fanny Haworth, an author who had long been a friend of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, then living in Florence. Ellen was thrilled to meet the famous couple. From their letters we get a sense of the awkward, enthusiastic, provincial Ellen – they found her pushy and
over-familiar, but recognised her true kindness. Later she insisted on commissioning and paying for portraits of them both by the artist Field Talfourd. The portrait of Elizabeth has become the most recognised image of her and was Elizabeth’s personal favourite. After Elizabeth’s death Ellen promised Robert Browning that she would donate both portraits to the National Portrait Gallery. In 1859 Ellen set up house at 6 Woodhouse Square, and lived there for the rest of her life, with her cook and maidservant. She continued to correspond with Ruskin, supporting his favoured artists, even lending them money, and sometimes helping in his research. She embarked on further travels, even as far as Poland and Russia. In later life, encouraged by Ruskin, she took up various philanthropic causes, supporting women’s education and university extension classes for working men – she offered to pay all the men’s admission fees, regardless of cost. Her liberality and passionate enthusiasms were increasingly a thorn in the side of her brother Dr Heaton, now wellestablished and eminent in public life. His diaries reveal his growing irritation with her, his dislike of her artistic taste, his concern that she was being exploited, even his dismay at her careless appearance – ‘I fear she is rather mad’, he wrote! She seems to have been unmoved by his disapproval. Ellen outlived her brother and most of his family. When she died in 1894 she left her collection of pictures to her one surviving nephew, a London solicitor, who bequeathed them in 1940 to the national collection – a loss to Leeds, which had once been their home thanks to this feisty, spirited woman.

Bethany’s Smile, the charity founded by Bethany Hare (12) last year to raise money for children with life threatening conditions, is staging a Christmas Charity Fashion Show/ Auction at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Thursday 1st November. Bethany is asking as many people as possible to donate their unwanted Christmas outfits – dresses, tuxes, dinner shirts, jewellery, handbags, shoes etc. – and is also asking local retailers and designers if they would donate one item each, for the event. Models will show off the outfits on the catwalk and then they will be auctioned whilst still being worn. In another suite there will be a variety of stalls featuring fashion retailers and other items where you can shop. Tickets for the show are £10 (available from bethanyssmile@ virginmedia.com). It’s a great opportunity to pick up party outfits at vastly discounted prices, whilst also helping children with life threatening illnesses. All donated outfits can be dropped off at Headingley Experience, Headingley Stadium, St Michael’s Lane, Headingley, marked for the attention of Miss Jacqui Page, Sales and Marketing Manager. CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF
A DENSE WEB OF COMPLEX EMOTIONS LAID BARE I always look forward to a play directed by Sarah Esdaile. Over the last couple of years she has directed William Nicholson’s ‘Crash’, Arthur Miller’s ‘Death of a Salesman’, and Terence Rattigan’s ‘Deep Blue Sea’ at West Yorkshire Playhouse and I have loved every one. Now she’s taking on Tennessee Williams’ ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ – I can’t wait! Sarah Esdaile
“
I first saw the play as a teenager and it was one of the things that really made me want to be a director
“
“I first saw the play as a teenager and it was one of the things that really made me want to be a director”, Sarah told us when we caught up with her. “I’m very excited about giving that experience to other people. It is definitely one of my top five things to do before I die!”
The music, acting style and design all conjure up the claustrophobic, hot, stormy evening. The dialogue has almost a lyrical, singing quality – Sarah describes it as being “...more emotionally complex than the mastery of an accent”.
Sarah is passionate about that group of American playwrights – Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Terence Rattigan. They have a way of layering human emotions, loading each scene with complex, raw feelings.
Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955, ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ gained worldwide recognition three years later as a film starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. In this version Zoe Boyle, who played Lavinia in Downton Abbey, plays Maggie and Jamie Parker (Brownlie in Parade’s End) is Brick her husband. The Pollitt family is gathered together for patriarch ‘Big Daddy’s’ birthday. The stage is set for an outpouring of hate, greed, lonliness. Uncomfortable truths are unearthed as the simmering pain in Williams’ emotionally charged drama comes bubbling to the surface.
“It is quite intimidating”, said Sarah. “The more you look at it, the more there is. It is very complex. The key is to recreate that world.” And what a world! Set in the Mississippi Delta, it is a hot, humid, languid world full of poetic realism. Outside a storm is brewing. Nature reflects the mood of the play as the family indoors is busy tearing itself apart. The heat is unbearable. The sexual tension is palpable. And, death is lurking in the corner. 22 October 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

NEW EXHIBITION FEATURES
BOOK ILLUSTRATION FROM 20S AND 30S
The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery is staging an exhibition that will delight lovers of book illustration. ‘Austerity and Invention: Illustration between the Wars’ runs until 1st December and features a magical mixture of styles and imagery from the 1920s and 1930s. In addition to Art Deco, the era was also informed by constructivism, cubism, modernism and the stark utilitarian Bauhaus. Everything, from architecture and travel to fashion and advertising, was affected. Printing and book design followed suit. The exhibition traces the development of the genre and the variety of media and styles between the wars, through artwork by renowned British illustrators.

GARDENROUND-UP By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural
.............................................. Frosts are quite common now so any tender plants you want to retain in borders need to be potted up and put into frost-free greenhouses or conservatories. There is less time to garden in the evenings now, which means getting it all done at the weekend. Clear fallen leaves and either bag them to rot down or build a wire cage for the same purpose, leaf mould is a good soil conditioner. Tidy up ponds and remove pumps for the winter, lift and store Dahlias, Gladioli, and Summer flowering bulbs. Leave seed-heads and hips for the birds. Finish planting Spring bedding plants and bulbs, except for tulips which can be planted next month. Harvest apples and pears before they are damaged. Lift and store carrots and potatoes, parsnips taste better with a touch of frost on the ground, and the same goes for sprouts.

Trees, Maples in particular, look great at this time of the year, with colours ranging from burning yellows to rich reds and bronze-purples. The stems of Cornus are also showing their colours now that their leaves have fallen. Nerines, Colchicums, Japanese Anemones and Kaffir Lilies are in flower, adding colour to the garden. Choose more tall growing grasses – they can add not only colour, but also movement in the wind. Collect seeds from trees and shrubs for children to grow. They don’t need warmth to germinate. Berries also can be started off by squashing them and separating the seed and plant. Prepare the ground for planting any new bare rooted stock next month, and make a start on broad beans for next year. Sow Sweet Peas under cover for an early show. Tall shrubs like Lavateras and Buddlejas, which will be pruned again in Spring, can be cut back by half their height to neaten them and help with wind rock. Check any new plantings to make sure they are stable, staking if necessary. While the ground still has some warmth, move any evergreens which have been planted in the wrong place. Check around rock plants, take off any rotting leaves, and cover them to protect against the frost and wetness of Winter.

Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon
Cormorants are large, dark water birds often seen perching upright on rocks and posts in the water. Essentially black with a greenish gloss in good light, they have a long thick neck, rather angular head and thick bill. They swim low in the water with uplifted head, and dive frequently. A characteristic pose is to perch on a rock with wings spread out to dry. Originally, cormorants were mainly coastal birds, breeding on cliffs as at Filey. Increasingly, over the last forty years, they have spread inland and can be seen on rivers, lakes and reservoirs at any season. There are now substantial breeding colonies on the Ings at Fairburn and Wheldrake. With necks outstretched, they are often seen flying along the Aire and Wharfe valleys. Inland birds tend to disperse to the coast in winter when numbers are further augmented by seasonal visitors from mainland Europe. A fairly common bird, cormorant numbers are relatively stable.

Such an obvious change to their appearance can have a huge affect on their confidence and self-esteem. ‘Get Wiggy With It’ is a fun way to support Teenage Cancer Trust and help young people diagnosed with cancer. You can take part by wearing a wig, hat or crazy hair at work, school, or even out socially during October. To get your ‘Get Wiggy with it’ fundraising pack, just contact www. teenagecancertrust.org Teenage Cancer Trust would also like you to enter their ‘Get Wiggy’ photo competition by sending your best ‘Wiggy’ photos to www.facebook.com/TeenageCancerTrustGetWiggyWithIt 34 October 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

LEEDS CITY FC ARE WEST RIDING COUNTY CUP WINNERS Leeds City Amateur Football Club, based in Adel, recently won the prestigious West Riding County Cup! Having triumphed in a thrilling semi-final against West Yorkshire Premier League rivals, Bardsey (3 – 2 after extra time), Lepton Highlanders stood between Leeds City and a first taste of glory. It was a tense spectacle. They led twice, only to be pegged back by two perfectly executed strikes. The two sides could not be separated after 120 minutes, so a penalty shoot-out was the deciding factor. City held their nerve, Lepton lost theirs. The trophy belonged to Leeds City! Leeds City was established in 2006, taking its name from the leading professional football club in Leeds before World War I. The intention was to develop a progressive, forward-thinking club, which would adopt the right attitude in its endeavour to play attractive, competitive football at the highest level possible. Leeds City 1st Team began the 2006/07 season in the West Yorkshire Division 2 and finished in second place, gaining automatic promotion. The 2007/08 campaign in Division 1 followed a similar pattern and the second promotion meant that the team had reached the West Yorkshire Premier League.

In 2008/09 Leeds City proved they were more than capable of holding their own in the Premier League. Eleven wins from 12 games meant they were just two points behind leaders, Knaresborough Town, heading into the last game of the season. However, despite an emphatic 6 – 1 win against Sherburn White Rose, news arrived that Knaresborough had rallied from a goal down to defeat Pool 2 –1. For a third consecutive season, Leeds City finished as runners-up. It would prove to be their highest finish in the West Yorkshire Premier League as they finished both 2009/2010 and 2010/11 in third position, and in seventh in 2011/12. Now, with the West Riding County Cup firmly in their grasp, they are looking forward with renewed enthusiasm to the 2012/13 season. Leeds City is a progressive, forwardthinking club, that aims to play attractive, competitive football at the highest level.
SUPER LEAGUE STARS COMPETE FOR RUGBY LEAGUE’S BEST GOLFER TITLE More than 20 Super League stars recently swapped their boots for spikes at Cookridge Hall Golf Club to compete in the inaugural event to find Rugby League’s Best Golfer. Cookridge Hall’s General Manager, Gary Day, joined forces with Wakefield Wildcats to launch the event in support of the ‘Joining Jack’ Campaign and Children’s Ward 41 at Leeds General Infirmary – Cookridge Hall’s designated charity. Players recorded an individual Stableford score from which they created a team event and determined the all important winner of the title. Bradford Bulls star Tom Burgess took first place in the team event alongside Wakefield Wildcats’ Danny Kirmond and Paul Johnson with 48 points over 12 holes.
Now the event is in place, Cookridge Hall hopes to increase the numbers for next year. It seems the Rugby League’s Best Golfer event is now well and truly on the cards.

Setting the pace for the main title was Jordan Tansey. Having only completed 12 holes, due to heavy downpours, he returned an impressive 28 points. In a closely fought competition, Huddersfield Giants’ Tommy Lee returned a fantastic 37 points 79 gross only to be beaten by one point by Salford City Reds Chris Nero with 38 points, recording his best ever gross score of 78.

CHARITIES INSTRU-MENTAL IN PROMOTING MENTAL HEALTH WELLBEING Instru-mental, a group of local charities promoting mental wellbeing, is organising a unique music event at Swarthmore Education Centre on Saturday 20th October starting at 6.30pm.
The packed bill includes Biscuithead & The Biscuit Badgers, The Sentimentalists, The MoMos and Oui Bee along with acoustic performers Solaris, Lunar Calling and Miranda Arieh.
“During a recession, people are under a lot more pressure and are naturally worried about keeping their jobs and being able to look after their families”, said Mike Jolly, Project Co-ordinator of music charity Cloth Cat. “It is crucial that people know what help and support is around them in the city. Instru-mental aims to target music fans rather than targeting traditional groups working in the sector who are already aware of what support networks exist.” One in four of us will be affected by a mental health problem at some point in our lives. Instru-mental is a collaboration of local organisations working within the field to provide activities and services for those living with mental health conditions, including Arts & Minds, Cloth Cat, The Swarthmore Education Centre and the High Royds Memorial Garden. Admission is £4 on the door. More information can be found at http:// leedsinstrumental.wordpress.com

CHANTEL MCGREGOR WINS AGAIN AT BRITISH BLUES AWARDS
This year’s British Blues Festival weekend at Newark Castle, Nottinghamshire, was another rip roaring success. An integral part of the Festival was the presentation of the British Blues Awards and superb local guitarist and vocalist Chantel McGregor, a recent graduate from Leeds College of Music, was awarded the coveted ‘Female Vocalist’ of the year.
This is the second time that Chantel has won a British Blues Award – last year it was for ‘Best Newcomer’. Since then she has been pretty busy performing all over the UK and touring in Finland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Holland. She brought out her first album ‘Like No Other’, and is currently working on her next, which she hopes to start recording early next year. Needless to say, Leeds College of Music is delighted with Chantel’s success. “She was an excellent student throughout both FE and HE and took advantage of all the opportunities presented to her”, said Charlotte Orba, Head of Undergraduate Studies (Popular & Production). “Chantel has worked extremely hard, ensuring that her natural talent has been given every chance of success. She is an astonishing guitarist and vocalist and quite rightly, she is carving out a real niche for herself in the British and European Blues Scene.” She was in good company at the festival – Ian Siegal took ‘Best Male Vocalist’, Paul Jones got the award for Harmonica and Joe Bonamassa was awarded ‘Best Overseas Artist. King King were Best Band, Matt Schofield took Best Guitarist and Steve Cutmore took the Drummer award. Tony McPhee of The Groundhogs, Del Bromham of Stray and Andy Fraser, bassist with Free, were all presented with the new British Blues Greats Award. Being part of the centenary album ‘100 Years of the Blues’ in the company of the all time greats and ‘Blues Fury’, the new rock revolution, is testament to how highly she is regarded in the music world! When 40 October 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk
our reviewer went to see Chantel in York last year, he described her as being ‘a genuinely natural musician whose ease and fluency with her instrument is an awesome thing to behold’.
Chantel will be back in familiar territory soon, so you can grab an opportunity to see her. Catch her at Fibbers in York on Friday 12th October; she’s playing a Special Solo Weekend at the Town Hall in Ripley from 2nd – 4th November, and she’s at Joseph’s Well in Leeds on Friday 9th November (details www.chantelmcgregor.com).
FILMS AT HEART
A group of Headingley residents are setting up a Film Club at HEART on Bennett Road, Headingley. They will be showing independent films, initially on a monthly basis. The response to this initiative has been very encouraging and they are confident that it will be a huge success. The club has already raised money to purchase equipment to get started – but there’s more equipment they would like to purchase in the future.
“First screening is the award-winning and
Oscar nominated French-Canadian film Monsieur Lazhar on 16th October
“
Membership of ‘Films at HEART’ is just £20 a year. Ass well as a reduced price for screenings, members can take part in the running of the club, help choose future films and participate in a web-based film discussion forum. They also hope to set up a DVD swap-scheme. Film at HEART’s first screening is the award-winning and Oscar nominated French-Canadian film Monsieur Lazhar on 16th October. On 20th November it’s ‘Senna’, and ‘The Well-Diggers Daughter’ on 11th December. Enjoy a drink and food in the HEART café before the films, which will start at 8pm. Tickets available from HEART - £4 members and concessions (60+, students, unwaged), £6 others.

THE BOURNE LEGACY DIRECTED BY: : TONY GILROY STARRING: : JEREMY RENNER, RACHAEL WEISZ, EDWARD NORTON CERT: 12A LENGTH: 135 MINS When ‘The Bourne Identity’ emerged in 2002 it took many by surprise – it was better than anyone expected. The two sequels that followed, with the directing reins handed to Paul Greengrass, improved on the original and raised the bar for the entire action genre, causing the flagging Bond films to up their game (the partial reboot, Casino Royale could be seen as 007

playing catch up to Jason Bourne’s new type of action hero). With the previous movies being such a critical and commercial success, there were obviously those in Hollywood unwilling to let the Bourne franchise die and hoping, with both Matt Damon and Greengrass having moved on,
‘The Bourne Legacy’ is a perfectly functional and fairly watchable actionthriller but it sadly fails to live up to its predecessors. It all looked promising on paper; Director Gilroy worked as screenwriter on the previous films and therefore had a firm handle on the Bourne universe, and Jeremy Renner seemed an inspired choice for the lead, having turned heads with his excellent work in ‘The Hurt Locker’ and his roles in ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’ and ‘The Avengers’ indicating he was being groomed for action star status. However, while all the Bourne hallmarks are present (far flung exotic locations, High level CIA paranoia, bone-crunching fight scenes, parkour rooftop action, high-speed car/ motorcycle chase) we’re left with something altogether less satisfying that what came before, a bit like a lacklustre cover version of a hit song. Neither a sequel nor a prequel, Legacy has been described as a ‘parrallelequel’ (I promise never to use that word again) as the events in this picture run concurrently with those in ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’. At the centre of the action this time is Aaron Cross (Renner) another of the US military’s top secret brainwashed super-soldiers (there was never just one, the film’s poster assures us). No previous experience or skill needed! Come prepared to gently move: comfy clothes/ bare feet having gone rogue and his search for the truth threatening to expose the CIA to unwanted scrutiny, the agency sets about cleaning up before their rather dodgy practices are brought to light and this means wiping out scores of top ‘assets’, Cross among them. In a new development, Aaron Cross is shown to be the next phase of super agents, not merely psychologically and physically tinkered with, but also pharmaceutically enhanced. Having become dependant on his meds, Cross enlists the help of Dr Marta Shearing (Weisz) so that he might avoid his brain turning to mush when he goes cold turkey. So, essentially, whereas Jason Bourne was searching for the truth of his identity, Aaron Cross spends most of the movie looking for a fix.

As a fan of the franchise, I was fairly excited about the prospect of another Bourne movie and foolishly allowed myself to harbour high hopes. Not that it’s a particularly bad film, it’s just with its forerunners representing such a high water mark for contemporary action cinema it has a great deal to live up to and unfortunately falls somewhat short. Stepping into the shoes vacated by Matt Damon, Renner does a good job in the lead role and, I’d say, is more convincing than Damon as a haunted, battle-worn soldier. But, for all that, while Gilroy can adroitly tell a story, he’s not quite the helmsman Greengrass is and Legacy therefore lacks the frenetic, hyper-dynamic excitement that made Supremacy and Ultimatum so thrilling. One comes away from the film feeling more than a little short changed in the action stakes.

NORTHERN BALLET’S SHORT BALLET FOR SMALL PEOPLE ‘Ugly Duckling’, Northern Ballet’s first short ballet for small people, will be performed at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre at Northern Ballet, Quarry Hill, from Monday 29th October – Friday 2nd November. The project is designed to encourage children (from age four) to see their
first ballet and introduce young families to Northern Ballet. The colourful production will feature a host of animal characters including cats, frogs and a fox. The performance lasts 40 minutes and the music ranges from classical to the theme tunes of popular children’s cartoons.
Choreographed by dancers Dreda Blow and Sebastian Loe, the ballet is based on the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale – the story of a lonely duckling who doesn’t fit in. Gradually she learns about herself and those around her then, when she learns to love who she is, she turns into a beautiful swan. “The great thing about ‘Ugly Duckling’ and other children’s stories is that they teach important and timeless values”, said Sebastian Loe. “The message we want to get across is that we should be confident in embracing who we are and not be afraid of being ourselves.” Dreda saw her first ballet when she was only two years old and was absolutely riveted. “If our production inspires children to start ballet lessons then that’s great, but most importantly, I hope it awakens in them a love and appreciation for the magic of dance and theatre in general. Sebastian and I want to create a performance rich in personality and humour with lots of impressive, beautiful dancing. I can’t wait to see the children’s reactions!” Tickets £4/ £5 are available from the box office on 0113 220 8008

“The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is about individuals striving to meet challenges, regardless of personal circumstances”, said Dr Lynne Gilbert, Award Group Leader at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) at the recent launch of the fund, where GSAL teamed up with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for Yorkshire and Humber. Former mountaineer Steve Derwin gave an inspirational talk about discovering what he could do after breaking his back and becoming a wheelchair user. “Steve hang-glides, para-glides and scuba dives”, said Sue Emmerson, Operations Officer for the scheme in this area. “He makes people realise how capable those with disabilities are. Many young people with special needs think they can’t take part, but with the right support they too can fulfil their potential.” The week after the talk, Sue headed to Morocco to climb Mount Jebel Toukbal, the highest mountain in the Atlas range. Accompanying her were Katie Roelich and Ben Robinson from Menston, who volunteer with the D of
E scheme in Bradford, Sue Johnson and Helen Wedge from Sheffield, and Penny and Robin Hudson from North Yorkshire, all D of E employees. They all paid their own expenses, so all sponsorship will go directly into the fund to benefit disabled youngsters in the Yorkshire and Humber region. The Duke of Edinburgh Award supports over 275,000 people every year, including 30,000 from disadvantaged backgrounds. As a youth charity its ethos is to enable young people (aged 14 – 24) to take part and succeed. To contribute to the fund, please visit www.justgiving.com/YorksandHumberDofE

“
We associate the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme with challenges for the fittest teenagers. Now there is a fund which will provide extra support and enable youngsters with disabilities to participate.

SPORTS OFFER VITAL SKILLS FOR LIFE This Summer, the Government was criticised for not featuring sport highly enough in the school curriculum – illustrated by cuts to the Schools Sports Partnership budget and the continued selling off of school playing fields. Jane Disley, Headmistress of Richmond House School in Far Headingley, the former prep school of Olympic medallists
Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, believes that sport at school has never been more important, especially with the renewed appetite for sport across the country following the Olympic Games. Exercise generates energy, aids concentration and makes children more open to learning. Other vital skills for life, such as teamwork and forming friendships, are also developed through sport. Richmond House School is fortunate to have ten acres of sports fields and offers a wide range of sports, with talented staff dedicated to finding each child’s strengths and nurturing their talents. Children of all abilities are encouraged to participate in sports and find their passion. Those who excel are given opportunities to grow and compete at high levels. This combination of competition and opportunity is what delivers sporting success.
