Dear Readers,

As we all put aside thoughts of holidays and look forward to tackling work with renewed vigor and seeking out new challenges and highlights that will carry us through to Christmas, we bring you a few suggestions. First of all there are lots of interesting courses on offer all over Leeds, including through Leeds Met, Swarthmore Education Centre, The WEA and Leeds City College. Why not try something new? In other news – September brings Cheese Week and Nick Copland of Homage2Fromage sings the praises of local cheese; and Skipton hosts its International Puppet Festival with over 30 puppet companies from all over the UK and Europe.

We were delighted to chat to Kenneth Tindall of Northern Ballet who has discovered that he’s really quite a good choreographer! We also caught up with James Brining at the West Yorkshire Playhouse as he set out to direct his first production as the Playhouse’s new artistic director. REAP have organized a Green Fair at St Edmund’s Church which will have all kinds of ideas for saving energy and money; we also find out about the WI group ‘Darling Roses’; Cllr Dan Cohen asks people to park considerately; and Cllr Bill Urry tells us about people with learning disabilities speaking out in the Leeds Council Chamber. And now it’s on to October! This year is flying by. Our deadline for all your news and notices is 1st September, for advertising it’s 6th September. We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards Carole, Jack and the team

So much to do, and in such a glorious setting, one of the great joys of visiting the Harewood Estate is that there is plenty of space to explore and you don’t feel corralled into a pre-determined tourist itinerary. The Bird Garden is a traditional starting point. The collection has been reduced over the past few years, but only to give better living conditions for the remaining birds, which enjoy spacious, carefully designed aviaries. The Humboldt penguins are a perennial favourite, but venture further and find a delightful young carrion crow which was hand-reared and donated to Harewood. It loves children and will come to the side of the aviary to exchange twigs with them. We saw a kookaburra, just a few months old, whose parents were trying to encourage it to move a little to collect food rather than expect direct delivery to its infant beak. The burrowing owl from South America, curiously long-legged, has a specially built home to stop it burrowing out, but enough territory to let it feast on voles and moles. Enjoy the constant gentle chattering and birdsong – it’s immensely therapeutic. The Himalayan Garden has been creatively nurtured over the past few years by head gardener, Trevor Nicholson, He visited Bhutan to advise their royal family and came back inspired. A steep area of garden, leading down to the lake, is now filled

with beautiful and unusual plants. There is specialist alpine planting in some rocky walls built from massive blocks from quarries near Howarth. Some tiny, delicate flowers have roots which wend more than 15 feet in to the rock crevasses. Orchids are protected from marauding local rabbits. Amble around the gardens, enjoy the lake, trip across the stepping stones, admire the waterfall. Then visit the walled gardens where they grow vegetables for the café. The further you go from the car park, the more you have the sense of the sheer size of the estate. See the deer grazing. Of course, there is the magnificent children’s adventure playground, but the more adventurous can enjoy hours of play in the woods. Harewood House is a delightfully un-stuffy stately home. You may recognise the library when you see ‘Death Comes to Pemberley’ on TV this Winter. It’s home to some exquisite Chippendale furniture, and some fine Victorian artwork, including Turner landscapes. Harewood is now open all year round. During the winter, some parts are closed for maintenance and restoration, so check in advance. But there is always loads to do, fun to be had, and much to learn. Enjoy! Miranda Hughes

ARTHUR MICHELL RANSOME (1884-1967) Author, War Correspondent, Journalist – and Secret Agent

You will still find Arthur Ransome’s famous series ‘Swallows and Amazons’, written in the 1930s, among the children’s classics on bookshop shelves, and this summer the BBC plans a new film version set on Coniston Water. The stories may seem outmoded now, yet they still appeal: tales of children joyfully free to sail their boats, camp out, enjoy adventures, live an imaginative life close to nature, unfettered by adults’ concerns or modern complexities. The Arthur Ransome Society thrives, with members all over the world who have been delighted, touched, and inspired by these books. Arthur Ransome himself led a life of improbable adventure, though it began conventionally enough in Leeds, where he was born at 6 Ash Road, Headingley, in 1884. His father was Professor of History and Literature at the Yorkshire College, the forerunner of Leeds University. Home life was happy but unsettled: every few years the family moved house: to de Grey Road off Woodhouse Lane; to Balmoral Terrace in Claremont Road, Headingley; to St Chad’s Villas, Otley Road. But the long summer holidays were always spent at Coniston. Arthur shared his father’s passion for fishing and sailing, and for the Lakes – more home to him, he said, than his beloved ‘smokey old Leeds’. At nine he was sent to prep on a guide book and a collection of school at Windermere, but he was folk tales. His stay coincided with desperately unhappy, hampered by one of the great turning points of severe short sight which no one had history: the First World War and the recognised. Four years later his father political upheavals leading to the 1917 suddenly died, leaving Arthur with a Russian revolution. He found a house in his beloved Lakes and settled into writing the first of his long series of children’s books, ‘Swallows and Amazons’, set in the Lakes and the Norfolk Broads. The stories embody, with affection and humour, his sailing experience and boats, personalities and incidents from his childhood onwards. After a slow start they became bestsellers, the final one published in 1947. Arthur retained his love of Leeds, and often visited his mother’s home at 28 Grove Road, Headingley, until her death in 1945. In 1952 he was awarded an honorary DLitt. by Leeds University, which now holds an outstanding collection of his papers. He and Evgenia continued their nomadic life, moving every few years to different houses in the Lakes, the Broads, and London, but they returned to the Lakes in the years before his death in 1967, and he is buried there in peaceful Rusland churchyard.

habaz Hussain has already had an impressive, colourful career in the hairdressing industry – now he’s set to bring some of that excitement to Leeds as he takes the reins at Hob Salons on Duncan Street in the city centre. Having worked with Vidal Sassoon for 12 years – starting as an assistant and working his way up the ranks to become Creative Director and Education Trainer – he then teamed up with Wella Professionals as an Educator. Add to this his experience in TV on shows like Colleen’s Real Women, Katie Pryce’s Sky Living Model Search, and styling celebrities like Jade Jagger and Lady Gaga – yes, you read that correctly! When Lady Gaga appeared in Manchester a couple of years ago with the Pussycat Dolls, her hairdresser wasn’t available and quite by chance Shabaz stepped in giving her a striking bob style which she was still sporting weeks later in a music video. He has also worked on campaigns for leading fragrance companies and for

various designers at London and Milan Fashion Weeks. “I have covered a lot of territory in a relatively short time and I’ve loved every minute of it”, Shabaz told us. “Running my own salon was the next thing on my wish list. Hob Salons have 23 franchises down South – Leeds is the only one in the North. It is a family-run, innovative brand and definitely had the right feel for me. “Leeds has a real vibe about it. I love our central location – so near Trinity and the whole downtown shopping area. We have already extended our hours and are now open seven days a week so we can fit in with people’s work and shopping patterns. I’m also looking forward to getting involved in the Leeds Fashion Show in October. I already have a strong team in Leeds and aim to continue to deliver the ultimate HOB experience to our clientele and nurture some of Leeds finest hairdressers.”

Your bathroom is one of the most important rooms in your house. Let’s face it, we all spend a lot of time there – whether it’s getting ready for work, enjoying long, relaxing, luxurious bath, or recovering after your latest bout of extreme exercise. You want your bathroom obviously to be functional, but to also incorporate those touches that add the pamper factor. Daniel Landau of Coral Bathrooms believes they have the right formula. This family firm has been fitting bathrooms in North Leeds for the past seven years and currently fit around 100 bathrooms a year. “When my father and I set up Coral, we decided that we would specialise in bathrooms and wet rooms, build strong links with suppliers and always work with our own team of fully trained fitters plumbers, electricians and tilers. And, that is what we have done”, he told us. “With our suppliers (which include Vitra pottery, Mayfair taps and showers and Sherburn, as well as our own range of tiles featuring ceramics,

September2013 Area B.indd 10

natural stone, travertine and porcelain), we know we can rely on consistent quality and constant supply and we pass this reliability on to our customers. What’s more, we remain truly very competitive.” Daniel grew up in Alwoodley and knows North Leeds like the back of his hand. “I can honestly say we have fitted bathrooms all over North Leeds – from The Avenue in Alwoodley to The Becketts in Headingley, plus Horsforth, Adel and Bramhope to Roundhay and beyond”, he said. This widespread experience means that

Coral have an excellent understanding of the types of housing in the area, giving them an appreciation and recognition of both the type of design and equipment that would suit each installation. From Victorian terraces and Edwardian Villas to post war semis and contemporary homes – understanding both the limitations and the possibilities helps Coral to advise and guide their customers. “The important thing is that your bathroom suits you as an individual or family”, continued Daniel. “It’s more than a choice of taps or type of bath. Is it in the right place? Is there natural light? What’s the ventilation like? And, what about storage? You want to make the most of the space. It needs to be durable, functional and stylish. Many people like to stick with neutral colours which gives you the opportunity to really spice it up with accessories and mirrors. Of course, if you are brave, you can go wild with striking tiling or wall covering! But, whatever you do, money spent on bathroom design is well spent and will always add value and appeal to your home.” Coral Bathrooms pride themselves on their personal service and commitment to excellence in bathroom installation. Geoff Foote of Tadcaster recently commented: “This kind of service will take some beating!” And that is how Coral see it…..they set out to give a service that’s hard to beat.

For me, one of the highlights of the dance year for the last couple of years has been Northern Ballet’s Mixed Programme, held in June at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre. This is where I was introduced to Kenneth Tindall Choreographer, as opposed to Kenneth Tindall Principal Dancer. to the table. They were all fantastic experiences.” David Nixon, Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director, had just joined the company when Kenny left. Three years later David invited him back. “It was a totally different experience with David”, continued Kenny. “The repertoire and vision were different. I loved the variety of repertory…the acting side gave real meaning to the dance. I felt we really connected. “I love the creative process. Working with a new choreographer. I started inputting more and more. But I never saw myself as a choreographer and had no ambition to be one. But, I guess David saw something. One day he told me to take a few dancers into another studio and create a short piece. That’s where it started.” He couldn’t believe it when Project #1 was entered in the best choreography competition in the world and it didn’t just make the final….it won! “I was blown away by the level of talent.

Luminous Junc-ture

Last year his Project #1 blew me away – I didn’t realise that it was his first major choreographed piece. Subsequently it was entered into the International Choreographic Competition in Hanover and walked away with the Production Prize. This Year Kenny produced ‘Luminous Junc-ture’ – another stunning piece. We caught up with him soon after and he was still on a high – it had been quite a year. And, he was just about to get married – to Northern Ballet’s leading soloist, Hannah Bateman. It’s hard to believe now that Kenny thought at one time that he might become a footballer or go into martial arts! Once he found dance he was hooked. Having trained at the Central School of Ballet in London, working with Christopher Gable, Murray Kilgour and Greg

He also guested at the XIII International Ballet Festival of Miami and the Fifth International Dance Festival in Beijing. “Japan was amazing”, Kenny told us. “It is fantastic to work in another country. So inspired. It certainly gave me the confidence to try again. Now I’m always searching for interesting music. I was on the train when I heard Charlie Chaplin’s speech from The Great Dictator (which I used in Luminous Junc-ture) and I thought ‘incredible’. How could I use it? How could I visually grab the audience? You’ve just got to be brave. I wanted to get an emotional response. To get the mood right. Lighting played an important part and it was great working with Alastair West on that.” Kenny is now being called one of the UK’s most exciting young choreographers. A SPINE-CHILLING SWEENEY TODD

COMES TO THE PLAYHOUSE It’s been a year since James Brining took over as artistic director at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. When we caught up with him he was about to start directing his first show there – the story of the demon barber, Sweeney Todd. This spine-chilling contemporary version of a musical masterpiece explores obsession, injustice and retribution in a dark and murky world. Torn away from his family on a miscarriage of justice, Sweeney Todd returns to London hellbent on revenge, takes up his razors and becomes the most infamous barber of all time. Dishing up his brutal recipe for justice with the help of enterprising pie-maker Mrs Lovett, Sweeney Todd begins to clean up London the only way he knows how.

“I have quite a special relationship with this show”, he told us. “I first saw it in the early 90s, an extraordinary production at the National Theatre which, when I saw it as a young director, I immediately thought ‘I want to direct this show!’ I was absolutely blown away by it. I directed it when I was at Dundee Rep and when I saw there was a chance to do it here, I knew it was something

September2013 Area B.indd 20

I’d really like to revisit. It feels even more relevant now than it did when I staged it four years ago. Plus, Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre was also interested in it, so it gave us an opportunity, as two fairly iconic and important theatres in the north, to make a piece of work together.” Of course one of the challenges is that James will stage this in the Playhouse’s

It explores injustice and retribution in a dark and murky world

Quarry Theatre first, and The Exchange is a theatre in the round, which requires an entirely different series of staging decisions. “It’s an interesting challenge! Whereas it is essentially the same production, it will feel very different. We’re also in discussions with a major opera company to do it as an opera in two years time. It’s great to have the chance to not just do the show again, but to reimagine it and evolve the show.” We wondered how much he would draw on successful elements that were in his previous production. As James pointed out: with anything that’s artistically rich, your relationship with it is a reflection of that moment in time. Four or five years later the world has moved on and some of the things in that earlier production now speak more powerfully because of what’s happened in society. “When you’re working with something like Sweeny Todd which, as a drama and a piece of musical theatre, is such extraordinarily rich material, you can go back and mine it, just like you can a Shakespeare play. You can reveal different layers and discover new things and that’s really exciting.” Of course, the excitement won’t stop with Sweeney Todd. James has very strong views on how The West Yorkshire Playhouse can best engage people and serve its communities “That’s what I’m really excited about”, he continued. “I want to make shows for kids in The Courtyard, big, sweeping, massive shows in The Quarry, small new plays, and things outside the theatre. There’s not much that I’m not interested in!”

16/08/2013 11:17

His ambition is for quality theatre, which is art driven, explores and pushes the boundaries, and draws in a broad audience. It all about creating the highest quality work, comparable to work you could see anywhere in the UK. It’s about bringing together high class, quality, artistically valid, popular work. Another really important aspect for James is the theatre’s relationship with communities – the education sector, young people, older people, learning disabled people.

“That’s what makes this place unique and, for me, an extraordinary theatre. It’s the marriage of high artistic ambition with genuinely making people’s lives more fulfilling, rich and engaged. “As a reflection on this year, I’ve had some really brilliant moments when I’ve looked around this foyer and seen different audiences flowing out of the auditoria and mixing together. To me that’s a reflection of what Leeds as a city is, and that’s when this theatre seem most exciting.” Sweeney Todd is at West Yorkshire Playhouse from Thursday 26th September to Saturday 26th October. Leeds Grand Theatre recently received a Blue Plaque from Leeds Civic Trust, honouring its heritage. Local writer, director and producer, Kay Mellor, unveiled the plaque in the Dress Circle Bar at the Theatre. “To me the Grand Theatre is the theatre for the people; it can be commercial and it can be life-changing”, said Kay. “It deserves its name because it is grand in its architecture, grand in its productions and its staff are grand too! It is one Leeds’ most wonderful highlights.” The plaque reads: “Leeds Grand Theatre & Opera House. Kay Mellor

FOOD AND DRINK

What is it about cheese that excites the senses, stirs the passions and gets people talking? Essentially a way of preserving surplus dairy product, cheese is ‘milk with a future’. And, if the growing cheese culture of Leeds is anything to go by, that future is looking good...

September marks British Cheese Week (7 – 15 September). It is also a special time for Homage2Fromage because it is our second birthday in October. Homage2Fromage began as a simple gathering of cheese lovers in Leeds, but has quickly outgrown our expectations, regularly attracting 90 people to The Adelphi in the city centre to enjoy wonderful cheese. Homage2Fromage is all about trying new cheese and we work hard to introduce more and more interesting cheeses every month. With themes ranging from countries – French, Spanish, Italian – to types such as soft white, rind-washed and blue, we are seeing the interest in great, artisan cheeses rise. Leeds is wonderfully placed for cheese, with a host of excellent cheese makers located in Yorkshire. I was recently invited to the International Cheese Awards and was bowled over by the variety and the quality on offer. I was proud that Yorkshire cheese makers Shepherds Purse won Silver and Bronze awards for their Mrs Bell’s Blue against stiff competition from 27 countries. Another British cheese - a Claxstone Smooth Blue produced by Long Clawson Dairy – was

crowned Supreme Champion winning the accolade ahead of 4,285 other competitors. A growing passion for great Yorkshire cheese is the driving force behind the new George and Joseph cheese chop in Chapel Allerton. The shop will specialise in local Yorkshire cheese, alongside a range of favourites from around the world. Owner Stephen Flemming is

fulfilling a childhood dream: “I’ve always loved cheese, and especially the idea of a proper cheese shop full of amazing cheeses. Seeing Homage2Fromage gathering steam gave me the boost I needed to start selling Yorkshire cheese at local markets and food fairs. A year later I spotted an empty shop in Chapel Allerton.” British cheese is world-class, and

Yorkshire cheese is among the very best there is. With a thriving cheese club, and new specialist shops opening in Leeds, there has never been a better time to enjoy it. • Richard III Wensleydale from Andy Ridley – moister, milkier and softer than the commercial varieties. • Cotherstone. Joan Cross uses the same method as her mother to produce this crumbly, lemonfresh Dales cheese. • Kirkham’s Lancashire. The only farmhouse Lancashire still being made with unpasteurised milk. • St James. A ‘washed-rind’ pungent sheep’s milk cheese made on the Holker Farm in Cumbria. • Dale End Cheddar. This tangy, rich, full-on Cheddar is made using unpasteurised Dairy Shorthorn milk and aged for 18 months. Other great places to check for cheese are Salvo’s Salumeria (Italian cheeses) on St Anne’s Parade, Headingley; Pookie & Grumps on New Road Side in Horsforth; and Haley & Clifford on Street Lane LS17. And, don’t forget Headingley, Oakwood, Horsforth, Bramhope and Otley farmers’ markets and Kirkstall Deli Market, where you’ll find the likes of Cryer & Stott and The Lincolnshire Poacher.

FOOD AND DRINK Greg Lewis

he Hummingbird Kitchen in Chapel Allerton had been beckoning for some time and, finally, we made it! We had popped in once before for a quick lunch – but dinner was a whole different proposition. Chef Greg Lewis has a slightly different approach. First of all he is very serious about sourcing fresh, local ingredients. You can have aged Yorkshire Steak, Best Roasted Beef or English Rose Veal all from award-winning Taste Tradition in Thirsk. Plus there are half a dozen other main dishes featuring fresh fish, free range chicken, Old Spot Pork and vegetarian options. But the intriguing part is his ‘Small Plate Dining Experience’. This is where you get to choose three dishes each from the ‘Small Plates’ or starter menu. Of course, when there are two of you this means six little dishes to share. Following colourful descriptions from our lovely

waitress, Ella, we decided this was definitely the way to go. As we waited Ella brought us some homemade bread with Yorkshire virgin Rapeseed oil and balsamic butter. We didn’t want to spoil our appetites, but soon there wasn’t a drop or a crumb left. The chosen dishes began arriving at various intervals – prepared, we were told on the menu, by their ‘handsome’ chefs, but when I asked to judge that for myself they chickened out! There was smoked salmon, smoked in-house over Yorkshire tea, on a bed of fennel with little squares of Yorkshire Tea jelly; tasty bean fritters with a tahini/ sumac yoghurt to dip them in; Salt-baked beetroot salad with

chic peas and goat’s curd; gin cured Mackerel with cucumber sorbet and grapefruit gel that really added a little zing to the fish; rare breed pulled Ham Hock with green beans, cider mustard and scratchings; and some seriously good crispy calamari and courgette fritters in crumbly, light batter. I looked around surreptitiously and wondered if anyone would notice if I licked the dishes but refrained! Dessert was too tempting…. Dark chocolate fondant with peanut butter ice cream and salt caramel popcorn; profiteroles stuffed with lemon curd, with raspberries and vanilla cream; panna cotta topped with tropical fruit jelly; and wonderful buttery shortbread with peach sorbet. Did you notice there were more desserts there than people? What? I couldn’t possibly comment! All in all it was a lovely evening. We thoroughly enjoyed the taste sensations of the ‘small plates’ – which were surprisingly filling. The desserts were delicious. There was also a great selection of Yorkshire cheeses. The music – jazz, blues, light rock classics was perfect. Wine was available by the glass, carafe or bottle and there were a couple of interesting local brews from Ilkley and Saltaire breweries. The whole meal cost in the region of £80. I could have been tempted to start all over again but that really would have been greedy!

Leeds Seventeen is an award-winning restaurant tucked away in the leafy suburb of Alwoodley, Leeds. It’s been voted both ‘Best Suburban Restaurant,’ and ‘Best Modern English’ and has a dedicated following of local diners. The restaurant and banqueting venue is an independent, family owned business that celebrates its Yorkshire heritage with zeal. The owners and staff pride themselves on their strong focus on fresh, locally sourced produce, choosing to use the best seasonal ingredients available from small producers in the area. Their passion for contemporary British food with particular focus on Yorkshire, has certainly gained them a reputation. Head chef, Wayne Brimicombe, developed his skills over a career spanning 20 years, working for both Gary Rhodes and JeanChristophe Novelli. His experience and commitment to creating deliciously exciting dishes are a winning combination for the restaurant. “Championing Yorkshire and all its culinary delights is very important to me,” says Wayne. “Supporting the independent businesses and local producers and suppliers of quality food is key to the ethos of Leeds Seventeen. News From Your Councillors CLLR DANIEL COHEN

Alwoodley Ward Last month I clearly struck a chord with my request to parents delivering children to school to park as considerately as possible. My inbox was literally bursting with emails from residents, from right across the North of the City (it’s amazing how far this magazine travels) all giving me their own horrendous examples of nightmare parking, rude and abusive ‘parkers’ and in one case a tale that ended up with the Police having to be called! With schools starting again in the next few days, I would just like to reiterate my plea to parents to try and keep those

As a Governor of the East Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre, I was delighted recently to attend a special event in the Leeds Council Chamber for people with Learning Issues, chaired by House of Commons Speaker John Bercow. The initiative of Council Leader Councillor Keith Wakefield, it was moving to hear disabled people putting their case and putting professional politicians under real pressure.

COMMUNITY NEWS who live near our schools in mind when engaging in the joyful morning task of ‘hunt for a parking space near school’. I would also ask those who live near schools to please have that extra bit of patience ... especially for the vast majority of parents who try hard to park thoughtfully (and legally!) In the words of the Highways officer from the Council who, when I asked for some possible solutions to this issue said: “It is a huge problem, right across the city, with almost every school and no easy answers ... save for patience, thoughtfulness and tolerance on all sides”. Well said that man! On the subject of parking, a different issue recently raised its head while Neil, Peter and I were engaged in Street Surgeries around Alwoodley. This regards the number of people who don’t use their drives and inadvertently block narrow streets, by parking on the road instead. We saw some quite dangerous examples of this in both the Lintons and the Buckstones. A thought that did occur to me (with winter around the corner ... Sorry to have to remind you), was how much better it would be, if we could keep the roads that bit clearer – with cars that have a drive, actually being in them! Then in the event of an occasional icy night it would be that much safer. For any and all local queries your local councillors are always here to help. Daniel.cohen@leeds.gov.uk 0113 2041094

Most children with special needs are supported in mainstream schools. Inclusion is also supported by the East SILC’s partnership arrangements with other local educational establishments, so that young people with severe challenges can be educated with their peers. I hope that these partnerships increasingly become the norm, so that whatever their needs and abilities, children will routinely mix and understand each other. Hit and Run - Can you help? Local cyclist Stephen Biscoe, aged 70, faced four hours of surgery and weeks in hospital after being knocked off his bike on Roundhay Road at about 6pm on 16th July while travelling towards the Oakwood Clock. OAKWOOD CLOCK RESCUE DINNER GREAT SUCCESS The Oakwood Clock Rescue Dinner at the Mansion Restaurant, Roundhay Park, on 5th July was a great success, raising £2,130 for the cause! Fifty nine diners packed the restaurant. £590 was raised from the meal, £800 from the wonderful painting of the clock donated by the artist Mark Sofilas that was auctioned, and £740 from the raffle for an incredible cake donated by Kathryn Timoney of Timoney’s Café and a bottle of quality Champagne donated by Paul Mitchell of the Harris Partnership Ltd. It was a sun-drenched, mellow evening that started on the garden terrace with Champagne sponsored by the Mansion Restaurant, Simon Falk Eyecare and Roger W Williams Financial Planning Ltd. After a delicious meal, Fabian Hamilton MP gave a very enjoyable after-dinner speech, and Howard Lee rounded off the evening with another jokepacked, speech. A memorable evening and a fundraising success!

The Darling Roses WI group formed in November 2012, brought together by common interests and a desire to meet new people and learn new skills. They have attracted members from a huge variety of backgrounds and from all across West Yorkshire. Based in Moortown, their unique nature ensures that their membership base is very broad.

The Darling Roses are apparently the first WI group in Britain to meet on Saturdays! Many women would love to join the WI, but struggle to attend meetings on weekday afternoons and evenings. The Women’s Institute has made an enormous difference to so many women’s lives. From the outset, Darling Roses wanted to look at doing things in a new way. Rather than sticking to the usual two-hour format, they meet for a whole afternoon at the end of each month, so there is ample time for a brief WI meeting and a different workshop each time. Everyone who takes part gets

an opportunity to try something new and develop their skills and interests. Plus, the friendly, relaxed format means that members have plenty of time to socialise too. In the last year members have learnt how to make handcrafted chocolates, scented candles, Christmas wreaths, cushions and bunting, and have taken in a horticultural trip where they made hanging baskets. They recently visited West Yorkshire Playhouse’s wardrobe department, and enjoyed a private tour of The Leeds Library, the oldest surviving private subscription library in Britain. They are keen to hear from potential new members. To find out more visit www.darlingroseswi. org or find them on Facebook.

Tangled Roots is Interested in the Experiences of Mixed Race Families

The homeless charity Simon on the Streets, which supports the homeless and rootless in Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield, is looking for corporate sponsorship to ensure the success of its biggest annual fundraising initiative – the Sponsored Sleep Out. The Sleep Out is currently scheduled for 9.30pm on Thursday 26th September. No fewer than 100 members of the region’s business community are expected to sleep in the open air at a city centre location to raise money and highlight the plight of those sleeping rough. Now in its fourth year, managers at Simon on the Streets are seeking commercial sponsors to support the cost of operations and logistics, as well as contribute towards the overall fundraising target of £20,000. “We’ve really come to depend on the funds that the Sleep Out generates”, said Clive Sandle from the charity. “Without it, we couldn’t maintain the front-line emotional and practical support we currently offer to hundreds of people across the area. “The Sleep Out has proved to

It provides our sponsors with an ideal opportunity to prove their support and their determination to address one of the most pressing local issues.” For more information about corporate sponsorship packages or the Sleep Out itself, email Helen: helen@simononthestreets.co.uk

Tangled Roots is an Arts Council funded project that will explore and represent the experiences of people who have grown up in mixed race families in Leeds, or are currently part of a multi-racial family. The project will launch a website and publish a book featuring the experiences of ordinary mixed families, alongside memoirs from professional writers commissioned by the project. Tangled Roots was conceived by Dr Katy Massey, a former journalist living Chapel Allerton. “Growing up in Leeds, I never saw anything that reflected my family’s experience”, said Katy. “Now I have my own daughter and I am surprised to find that this hasn’t changed. The aim is to start a conversation where people of mixed cultural backgrounds can reflect on their lives and meet other people to share their stories.” The project will kick off with an exhibition of photographs of Tangled Roots featuring local writers who all have experienced growing up in a multi-racial family. The exhibition, with photography by Anthony Ferrimond (www. anthonyferrimond.com) will be displayed at Seven Arts, Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton, from mid September to mid-October 2013. The Tangled Roots website will be launched in September too, and early next year a book will be published, based on the stories collected on the website. There will also be a series of events in Leeds in 2014 where professional and amateur authors who have contributed to the book will read their work. Tangled Roots is looking for contributions from North Leeds Life readers for the book and website. If you are considering a wood burning stove, new-style boiler, electric car, or growing your own food – the Green Fair could help with your decisions. There will be advice from a variety of top suppliers and installers of green home improvements and transport options, including Renault (try their Zoe and Twizy cars), Solar Utilities, the Green Building Store with their exceptional range of insulation products, the Edinburgh Bike Co-op and many more. You’ll also be able to learn from local people who have already invested in green improvements. For example, using solar panels to generate your own electricity and save money. “Solar panels remain a good deal”, said Nigel Jones. “Our solar panels have reduced our energy bill by at least 50%. A fantastic investment!” Energy use is also about travel choices. Local families are enthusiastic about electric bikes, dual fuel cars and giving up car ownership completely. “Electric bikes put the smile back into cycling”, commented Nick Munton. “They take the sting out of steep hills. No pain, lots of gain!” Toyota Prius owner Paul Ellis would like to see a lot more dual fuel cars on the road as a spur to even faster technological progress. Marie Curie Cancer Care is appealing for volunteers in the LS16 community – Bramhope, Adel, Cookridge, Ireland Wood, Weetwood, West Park – to take on key roles on a new fundraising committee that will meet on a monthly basis. They are particularly looking for a Community Ambassador, Event Coordinator and Event Helpers. Community Ambassadors need to be able to give up a few evenings every other month to go into schools, associations (such as Rotary Clubs) and churches, to speak about the work of Marie Curie Cancer Care and its team of dedicated nurses and how people can access this care. An Event Coordinator would be responsible for planning out the group’s event activities, generating ideas from the group

and delegating actions such as booking venues and sourcing raffle prizes. Event Helpers would help at the group’s events every couple of months – with duties such as welcoming guests, helping serve refreshments and preparing rooms for events. “We need people with a broad range of skills to help us with our local fundraising activities, from people with the gift of the gab through to organisers who can come up with event ideas”, said Hannah Saxon, Community Fundraiser for West Yorkshire. All money raised by the group goes towards providing high quality nursing care to terminally ill patients in the local area. If you think you have a few hours to spare and would like to get involved, please contact Hannah on 01274 386190 or hannah.saxon@mariecurie.org.uk

All the beautiful Autumn colours of dahlias, chrysanthemums and nasturtiums are now in evidence, and the hydrangeas are beginning to turn colour too. Sometimes an Indian Summer will help to keep the gardens flowering. BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON August sees the return of common gulls as winter visitors, having nested mainly in Scotland with a few in the northern Pennines. The name ‘common’ is misleading, since three species of gulls are more numerous in Britain, including the familiar blackheaded gull. Some maintain the name originates from its preferred breeding grounds on bleak moorlands and upland commons. An elegant bird, it is intermediate in size between the slightly smaller black-headed gull and much larger herring gull, the typical ‘sea gull’. Adults are pure white with a pale grey back, black eye and greenish-yellow bill and legs. Wing tips are black with a large white spot at the end. Flight

is altogether more active and easy than that of herring gulls. Local common gulls favour farmland, notably ploughed fields and playing fields and appear in urban areas such as Woodhouse Moor and Lawnswood playing fields. The largest roosts in

Top screenwriter, director and actress Kay Mellor will show her feature film ‘Fanny and Elvis’, starring Ray Winstone and Kerry Fox, at Cottage Road Cinema, Headingley, on Tuesday 24th September at 7.45pm. This is a fundraising event for Macmillan Cancer Support and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). Kay, well known for her work on several successful drama series, including Fat Friends, Band of Gold, and The Syndicate, will also take part in a question and answer session with television presenter Gaynor Barnes. “Kay is a tremendous advocate for Leeds and Cottage Road is a historic cinema. I thought it would be a great idea to bring the two together and raise money for two great charities”, said organiser Karen Duffield. “I have personally seen the amazing work of these two charities and know how important it is that funds are raised to allow the continuation and development of the fabulous work they do.” Fanny and Elvis is a romantic comedy at the onset of the new millennium. When would-be author Kate Dickson finds out that she has a year left to get pregnant and her

husband Rob has run off with one of his students, her biological clock starts ticking away like a time bomb. The search for a sperm donor who is intelligent, healthy and has the right look is the focus. Kate is thrust into a world of sperm counts, ovulation and IVF. Relationships, sex and fertility in a new millennium are at the heart of this exciting film. “When Karen approached me to show Fanny and Elvis at Cottage Road I was delighted to be

part of such a wonderful event at my favourite cinema and the opportunity to support these worthwhile charities”, said Kay. Tickets (£10) are available from Cottage Road Cinema (0113 2751 606, www.cottageroad.co.uk), from Karen Duffield on 07930 355622 or Susan Preston on 07970 898923. FILM

REVIEW

ONLY GOD FORGIVES DIRECTED BY: NICOLAS WINDING REFN STARRING: RYAN GOSLING, KRISTEN SCOTT THOMAS, VITHAYA PANSRINGARM CERT: 18 - RUNNING TIME: 90 MINS This stunning, blood soaked tale of violent retribution sees Nicolas Winding Refn reunited with Ryan Gosling, star of his earlier feature, Drive, and is a visceral, utterly gripping film distinguished by an unsettling strangeness. Gosling here turns in another tight-lipped, virtually monosyllabic performance as Julian, an American expat fleeing past demons in Bangkok where he runs a boxing gym with his brother, Billy, as a front for their drug smuggling operation. A violently destructive cycle of revenge is set in motion when Billy, who from the outset strikes one as a particularly reprehensible piece of work, murders an underage prostitute. At this point the enigmatic, sword wielding police chief, Chang enters the fray. A self styled avenging angel, Chang gives the murdered girl’s father leave to do what he will with his daughter’s killer whereupon he wastes no time in caving in Billy

September2013 Area B.indd 38

skull. Chang’s redressing of the karmic balance doesn’t stop there, however. Appalled by the man who let his daughter become embroiled in the sex trade,

It’s a curveball of a film, delivering something more and quite different from what one would expect from a standard issue ‘Violent Revenge Thriller’ genre flick

Chang makes him pay by slicing off an arm. Thus is Chang’s particular brand of brutal justice administered. So far so messy. And it’s about to get messier with the arrival of Julian’s mother Crystal (an unrecognisable Kristen Scott Thomas). A fearsome, no nonsense crime family matriarch, Crystal chidingly goads Julian into seeking out and exacting revenge on those responsible for Billy’s death, an action they will both come to regret.

16/08/2013 11:18

Having been somewhat underwhelmed by Drive I was halfway expecting to be left cold by Only God Forgives. As it turned out I was completely transfixed. The film looks incredible, the cinematography, with its extraordinary richness of light and colour is mesmerising, almost every frame is painstakingly, beautifully composed. Slow, prowling tracking shots and a menacing, rumbling score imbue each scene with a sense of foreboding. The effect is almost trance-inducing as the film immerses us in a simmering, seething, murky underworld and seduces with its lushly lurid visuals

until the next explosion of violent brutality jars us from our reverie. There’s no question that Only God Forgives is not for everyone. The film’s screening at Cannes divided critics, with responses ranging from the effusive to the derisively dismissive. I would recommend it purely for it being such a curveball of a film, delivering something more and quite different from what one would expect from a standard issue ‘Violent Revenge Thriller’ genre flick. It’s quite unlike anything else out there at the moment and, if you have the stomach for it, I’d suggest you give it a look.

We are looking forward to another sell out race

rganised by Horsforth Harriers Running Club, registration for the Horsforth 10K Road Race is now open. This year’s race will take place on Sunday 29th Septembe, starting at 10am from its established base at Woodhouse Grove School, Apperley Bridge. Once again Horsforthbased medical software company TPP has agreed to sponsor the race – their fifth consecutive year of sponsorship. This year’s nominated charity is the Joint Activities and Motor Education Service (JAMES), a local charity that works with over 2000 disadvantaged young people and their families every year. They aim to provide a caring environment where young people can overcome disadvantage and lack of provision to achieve their full potential through the delivery of relevant education, training and leisure opportunities.

Horsforth 10K has earned a justifiable reputation as one of the best and most popular 10K races in the area

“Every year we choose a different local charity to benefit from our race”, said Race Committee member Ian Park. “The ever-generous running community support the charity via additional funds with their entry, which we, as a club, match pound for pound.” The Horsforth 10K course sticks mainly to roads as it heads back towards Horsforth following a sharp uphill start, with a long stretch of flat on the canal towpath from near Rodley back to Apperley Bridge with just the final couple of hundred metres on the grass of the Woodhouse Grove playing fields. The race

has been previously won by London 2012 Olympic Triathlon Champion Alistair Brownlee. “Horsforth 10K has earned a justifiable reputation as one of the best and most popular 10K races in the area”, said Race Director Bob Foulkes. “We are looking forward to another sell out race. Entries on the day are permitted up to the race limit but to be sure of a place it is best to enter prior race day via the Horsforth Harriers website.” Entry forms can be downloaded from www. horsfor thharriers.co.uk, www.ukresults.net and www.runnersworld.co.uk/ horsforth10K. Every finisher will receive a technical race t-shirt.

Councillors Sharon Hamilton, Asghar Khan, and colleagues on the Inner North East and Inner East Area Committees, have approved funding totaling £12,000 for improvements to Gledhow Cricket Club. Gledhow Cricket Club was set up in 2011 in response to local needs in Harehills. Over 70 young people had been attending community cricket session but there was no local club that they could join. So the community Group ‘CATCH’ and West Yorkshire Police established two junior teams at the Club. The junior teams have now expanded and the Club is attracting young people from

Roundhay and Chapeltown and has received a local award for building partnerships in the community. It has also been recognised by the English Cricket Board, which wants to use their strategies as a national template for increasing participation in grass roots cricket, especially in disadvantaged and deprived communities. The funding will go towards building a new artificial cricket practice area including nets and steel cages. These new facilities are urgently needed as Gledhow Club is struggling to accommodate the increasing numbers of young people who want to play cricket. “Gledhow Cricket Club has gone from strength to strength but has struggled with the demand for places”, said Councillor Sharon Hamilton, Chair of Inner North East Area Committee. “These improvements will help the Club to expand and allow even more children to benefit from the first-rate classes provided. We are delighted to have been able to fund these works.”

The Leeds Starlight Hike in aid of Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, returns on Saturday 28th September and is set to be bigger and better than ever! The 10km route takes walkers through the picturesque grounds and woodland of Temple Newsam estate. “This will be our biggest fundraising event of the year and we’re hoping to raise over £50,000”, said fundraiser Joseph ClarkBland. “Events like this are crucial to our survival. Without them we simply could not continue caring for people with cancer and other serious illnesses from across the Leeds community.”

The quality of care is phenomenal. Nothing is too much trouble

Those taking par t include Janine Silkstone, who completed last year’s Starlight Hike in memory of her mum, who was cared for at the hospice. This year she will complete the hike with her daughter and 15 other friends and family. “Wheatfields Hospice has been quite a big part of my family’s life”, said Janine. “The quality of care is phenomenal. Nothing is too much trouble and the staff is so dedicated. I decided to

do some fundraising to give something back.” This year, it will cost over £4m to run Wheatfields – and with 47 per cent funded by the NHS, £2.1m needs to be generated through donations and fundraising events. FROEBELIAN WIN IN NATIONAL ART COMPETITION

Issy Hill from Froebelian School won first place in the minimecardco.com nationwide art competition, which had over 3,000 entries from across the UK. Issy’s design won the school a fabulous forest bird box, which will attract more birds and allow the children to study wildlife in the school grounds. “Creativity is really important for children and this is encouraged through the many art projects we do in the school”, commented head teacher Mr Tranmer. The Froebelian School is an independent school for 190 boys and girls aged three to 11 years. It aims to provide children with a happy learning environment where they are challenged and supported to achieve personal excellence. Ac a d e m i c success is at its heart and this is complemented by plenty of sport, music, art and drama. There is also a full programme of extra-curricular activities, including opportunities for outdoor pursuits.

YOUNGER LIFE

CHILDREN GO POTTY FOR MARIE CURIE CANCER CARE This year, thousands of children (aged 3 – 11) will help to raise vital funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care by growing daffodils (the charity’s logo) as part of the Mini Pots of Care appeal.

Now in its ninth year, Mini Pots of Care is a project for schools and teaches children about science, nature and the work of Marie Curie Nurses. Free detailed lesson plans supporting Key Stages 1 and 2 are available online. Activity resources for youth groups are also available to download. Last year 117 schools in West Yorkshire took part and raised over £10,000, which helped to provide over 500 hours of nursing care. Schools receive a free kit, including
