Looking Forward to Celebrating 250 Years! Believe it or not, The Leeds Library at 18 Commercial Street will celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2018, and already it has started planning for this remarkable event. An international conference is on the cards, together with a civic reception and the publication of a book of essays.
espite its longevity, the library remains undiscovered by a huge number of people in Leeds – it is possibly the city’s best kept secret. Dating from 1768, it is the oldest surviving subscription library of its type in the UK. Located in a beautiful building, it has an absolutely stunning collection of books, some dating back to the 15th Century. There are some 80,000 books in its historic collection (before 1901), and 140,000 items in all. Thousands of new books are added to the collection each year. You’ll also find newspapers and magazines, films (including foreign language), audio books and a new music collection.
December2013 Area B.indd 6
The Leeds Library also runs a programme of lectures, exhibitions, films and other heritage and cultural events, all of which are open to the public. On Thursday 19th December Michael Meadowcroft presents a talk on Herbert Gladstone – the last in a sixth series of lectures on Leeds politicians. The Library has embarked on an ambitious development programme to ensure the future of the building and its collections, improve facilities and provide space for education programmes. It also aims to have its complete catalogue available on the internet It is free to visit the Leeds Library, but non members should make an appointment and will be given a guided tour. There will be guided tours on Saturday 7th December and Wednesday 18th December. All tours start at 10.30am and last about an hour. The Leeds Library is open Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm and Saturday 9.30am – 1pm. On the first Wednesday of the month they open from 10am. Researchers should make an appointment at least 48 hours in advance to consult a particular item. “The Leeds Library is a wonderful haven with a stunning collection of books. If you haven’t visited it, then give yourself a treat.” -Kay Mellor, writer and actress

PHIL (PHILIP WILLIAM) MAY (1864-1903) Artist in black-and-white, Caricaturist, Humorist
Phil May’s short life was one of extremes. From the depths of poverty and hardship he worked his way up to success and fame, only to plunge down again into illness and self-destruction. Gifted, funny, colourful, outrageous, he was loved and celebrated, not least in his home town of Leeds. He was born in 1864 at 66 Wallace Street, Wortley, the seventh of the eight children of Philip May and his wife Sarah. Phil’s father was an unsettled, feckless character, who had tried his hand at several jobs, finishing up in Leeds. He died when Phil was only nine, leaving the family in poverty. Phil had little schooling, and at twelve had to earn his way. He tried various office jobs until he found a niche at the Grand Theatre, helping to paint the scenery. He had loved drawing since childhood and made extra money selling caricatures of the actors, some published in local papers. At fifteen he joined a touring theatrical company, playing small parts on stage and illustrating the programmes and posters. By 1882 he had given up acting

A book based on stories collected from descendants of staff and patients will be published in time for next year’s Headingley LitFest in March. “The hospital developed several specialities during the course of the Great War”, said researcher Richard Wilcocks. “It became a centre for wounds to the face and teeth, and it had a reputation for artificial limbs, which were very much in demand because of frequent amputations.
Beckett’s Park Hospital was what the Second Northern General Hospital was called by most local people during the First World War, when it occupied buildings originally intended for training teachers. These are now part of Leeds
The first lightweight alloy prosthetic legs were introduced during WW1 - they were half the weight of wooden ones, and at first they were all made by the Desoutter Company. “I am now collaborating with the Thackray Medical Museum to find out as much as possible about this. The idea of an ‘artificial limb race’ is really interesting, so many years before the Paralympics.” If you know anything about this cigarette case, the winner, or Douglas Longmate, who made artificial limbs, please get in touch with Richard via headingleyhospital@gmail.com For further information on the project, visit

Northern Ballet brings a magical new production of Cinderella to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 17th December –Saturday 4th January. Photo: Jason Tozer
et in Imperial Russia, this World Première of David Nixon’s new adaptation of this gorgeous classic fairytale sees heartbreak turn to joy as the power of young love conquers all. The setting presents breathtaking Winter scenes and opulent ballrooms, all created by Duncan Hayler. Northern Ballet commissioned composer Phillip Feeney (who also created the music for David Nixon’s Hamlet in 2011) to write a brand new score. We caught up with Philip recently to ask how he had approached the project. “David and I have been

Writing a ballet requires about 90 minutes of music Pictured: Phillip Feeney
talking since early in the year”, he told us. “I worked on a version with Christopher Gable in 1993 and had misgivings about doing the story again, but it was great to have a second shot at it. This has been a very collaborative partnership where I have been involved with molding the synopsis from the start. “I have tried to make it as bright and fresh as possible, working lots of musical colour into it and using sounds that reflect the eastern European setting. In the end it took on its
own dynamic. When I attended rehearsals it was extraordinary to see images where there had been none, movements creating the story – it was a great experience.” Coincidentally, John PryceJones, Music Director of the Northern Ballet Sinfonia who will perform the score live, also worked on Philip’s previous version of Cinderella. “This is quite a different version of the story”, said John. “Asking Phil to create a new score for a show he had previously written for is unique in the theatre world. The music is characteristic of the Russian setting, with lots of magical colour, providing the platform and inspiration for the choreography. “Writing a ballet requires about 90 minutes of music – the equivalent of three symphonies! Many companies opt for recorded music but nothing can beat the feel of music being created at that moment and the dancers definitely prefer it. Northern Ballet are champions of live music.” Cinderella is David Nixon’s fifteenth new, full-length production for Northern Ballet and his second for 2013 – the other being The Great Gatsby. Once again David is creating the costumes, assisted by Julie Anderson, and lighting design is by Tim Mitchell.

Otley Victorian Fayre
Otley’s Annual Victorian Fayre will be held on Sunday 8th December, from noon to 6pm. More stalls than ever will be groaning with Christmas goodies to buy and eat. You won’t see candyfloss sellers, helium balloons, flashing light stalls or beef burger vans, but you’ll be able to eat high quality street food and discover the many cafes, shops and pubs around Otley. Traditional street organs will play catchy tunes, dance troupes will perform, and local school and adult choirs will sing carols. For children there are Punch and Judy shows, traditional fairground rides, and reindeer to visit. And, every year more and more people join in the fun by dressing in Victorian costumes. The official programme costs just £1. There is a prize draw inside worth £200, and a map showing where everything is and timings for the stage.

Rediscovered Prints Present Opportunity for Cricket Club The re-emergence of a number of prints, which had been in storage for the best part of 20 years, has presented St Chad’s Cricket Club with a unique fundraising opportunity!
In 1993, local artist Rachel McNaughton was approached by Mrs Jan Ali to produce a watercolour of St Chad’s Church and cricket ground as a birthday gift for her husband Zai Ali, former Chairman and Life Member of St Chad’s Broomfield Cricket Club. A number of limited edition prints were produced for the club to sell. The club is offering these lovely prints to local residents for just £15 each. They are hoping to raise enough money to cover the cost of a level three coach for junior players next season. Zai Ali was Chairman of the club for over 20 years and is current Chairman of the Wetherby Cricket League, in which St Chad’s competes. If you would like to purchase a print, please contact Paul Berry on 07795 154 444 or paul@365cricket. co.uk

Leeds Art Gallery Celebrates Art and Life A major exhibition by two of the UK’s most important 20th Century painters, Ben and Winifred Nicholson, is currently at Leeds Art Gallery and will run until 12th January 2014.
‘Art and Life’ examines their work individually and in collaboration with friends and fellow artists Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, and potter William Staite Murray. Curated in collaboration with art historian Jovan Nicholson (Winifred and Ben’s grandson), the exhibition gives a unique insight into the work of the artists and shows key pieces from public and private collections in the UK and Europe. Focusing on the period 1920 - 1931, and the important relationships they had with Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis and William Staite Murray, ‘Art and Life’ looks at how their work

shaped and informed the story of 20th century modern art in this country and explores the key contribution they made to modernism. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with newly commissioned texts, illustrated in full colour. In it Jovan Nicholson explores the way ideas flowed between the Nicholsons and Christopher Wood when they painted in Cumberland and Cornwall. Art Historian, Sebastiano Barassi focuses on their visits to Paris, Italy and Switzerland, and the potter Julian Stair examines the importance of William Staite Murray.
City Varieties’ Rock ‘N’ Roll Panto is Back! It’s almost time for this year’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto at the City Varieties Music Hall! Since it was introduced in 2010, just after the theatre had been refurbished, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto brand has almost become a tradition. This year the amazingly talented cast will present ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto is always a great success”, says Frank Chambers, City Varieties House Manager. “Children, parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents love it! The auditorium is like a party – live music, laughter and dance. It’s a must for festive season!” The Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto has all the bearings of a traditional panto – audience interaction, custard pies, slapstick comedy - with the added bonus of live music played by the actors and a playlist of hits from the 60s, 70s and beyond that gets the audience rocking in the aisles. Jack & The Beanstalk: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto is at City Varieties from Saturday 30th November – Sunday 12th January. Tickets (£13.50 - £19.50) are available from 0113 243 0808, or online at www. cityvarieties.co.uk

A Glorious Concert! Every year, Leeds Festival Chorus organises a concert at Leeds Town Hall. This year, it is entitled The Glory of Christmas and is on Saturday, 14th December at 7.30pm. The Chorus will be accompanied by the Orchestra of Opera North. Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio are both on the programme and the soloists are soprano Ruby Hughes, mezzo Kathryn Rudge, tenor Joshua Ellicott and bassbaritone Matthew Hargreaves. The Gloria was chosen partly because Antonio Vivaldi was one of the greatest Baroque composers to have lived in Venice, and Leeds Festival Chorus now has its own strong connection with that city. In
August this year, the Chorus sang at three well-attended events in Venice (one in St Mark’s Basilica) after being invited there by the concert pianist Alessandro Taverner, who was a finalist in the 2009 Leeds Pianoforte Competition. J S Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (WeihnachtsOratorium) is much better known in Germany, where it is thought of as very special, rather like Handel’s Messiah in Britain. “We try to be as adventurous as possible,” said Chorus artistic adviser and conductor Simon Wright, “and this great work by Bach is really going to surprise people who do not know it.” Leeds Festival Chorus has been booked to perform on two

occasions in the Leeds First Direct Arena – firstly as backing choir for Andrea Bocelli on 24th November, and secondly at Classical Spectacular on 30th November. Tickets for The Glory of Christmas (£16 - £31.50) are available from City Centre Box Office 0113 224 3801 or Chorus members.

At Leeds College of Art she developed her skills and design style to couture levels. The next natural step was for her to set up her own creative business. You can see her designs at www.mariehalewoodmillinery. co.uk
Along with the creative short courses, Leeds College of Art also runs portfolio development courses and a children’s arts school. This is a vibrant and inspiring collection of arts-based courses for 7 – 18 year olds, which aim to inspire creativity and teach new skills, and where children can explore creative subjects and meet new friends. FOOD AND DRINK
If not, that is definitely something that needs rectifying! The latest addition to Meanwood’s foodscape brings a fresh, new approach that is already rapidly gaining enthusiastic fans. For Chef/Patron James Coupland this has been a very personal journey. He has transformed what was previously a solicitors’ firm split up into little offices into a bright, open, contemporary space on two levels. To ensure the flexibility of the space, he sourced furniture from a reclamation yard in Guiseley and timber from Ripon to make the tables, and found a truly ingenious use for some copper piping found on site. When we dropped in recently we ensconced ourselves upstairs. As starters we opted for Home Cured Beetroot Salmon Gravlax with pickled cucumber and toasted brioche, and Chorizo Sausage with Crispy new Potato Salad topped with a poached egg. Interestingly, The Hungry Bear has its own little brewhouse on the premises – The Hungry Beer! There were three brews on offer –Golden Ale, Imperial Stout (described as ‘smooth, with chocolate and coffee notes), and Knot Two Pale Ale, an American pale ale made with Chinook hops. To try all three, their ‘tasting slate’, which gives you a 250ml glass of each, was perfect.
December2013 Area B.indd 24
They brew in batches of just 90 litres – apparently we can look forward to a ‘mossy, peaty’ New Zealand Pale Ale and a Maple Syrup Porter soon and a Christmas beer with flavours of the season is already bubbling away. As we waited for our starters we enjoyed some green olives, prawn and goats cheese and chutney hors d’oeuvres, and a taster cup of wonderful fresh mushroom soup with tarragon cream – who knew mushroom and

tarragon went so well together? The main courses included Seabass Viennoise with Crayfish; Baked Scarborough Woof on Creamed Truffle Gnocchi and asparagus; Sirloin Steak au Poivre and red onion tarte with whisky sauce; Beef Stew with garlic and thyme dumplings; Butternut Squash and Wild Mushrooms. We chose the Confit and Fired Belly Pork with honey roasted root vegetables, which was simply delicious and topped with very tasty little mushrooms; and Artichoke Forestière Parcels with soused pear and babyleaf salad – paper thin pastry wrapped around artichoke hearts and mushrooms… so tasty. Special little touches like the soused pears and bourbon roasted figs added lovely taste surprises. We finished off with a delicious Passion Fruit Tarte and a cheeseboard of five Yorkshire cheeses that nearly defeated us! The Hungry Bear is certainly a welcome addition to Meanwood. It has a lovely atmosphere, the music is great, the service friendly and efficient and, on top of that, it is reasonably priced! The Hungry Bear, 10 – 14 Stonegate Road, Meanwood. Tel: 0113 274 0241

The festive season is upon us again! This is the time of year when it is not only acceptable, but indeed expected, that our thoughts turn continually to tasty food and warming beverages. What to eat, where to eat and what to give to our favourite food lovers are all questions to be addressed on a daily basis.
SEASONAL FOOD CELEBRATIONS Christmas markets are always a great starting point for festivities and Leeds is crammed with appetising options. As usual the city centre welcomes back Cristkindelmarkt in Millennium Square, with its stalls of German delicacies like Stollen, gingerbread, mulled wine, and bratwurst sausages with goulash and dumplings. New this year is Winter WonderLeeds from 6th – 22nd December, which will transform Briggate with a huge marquee hosting independent food and craft stalls, as well as entertainment. But, with all of this flash and dazzle, don’t forget Leeds Kirkgate Market where you will find the very best deals in fresh ingredients – from seafood and fine meats to great produce and seasonal goodies. Pigging Out with The Greedy Pig! Many people are familiar with The Greedy Pig – a great little sandwich shop and café on North Street in Leeds. Since Jo and Stuart Myers took it over two years ago it has gained a reputation as one of the best places for breakfast and turns out many a mean sandwich. You may have thought that was it – but, the pig is out! A couple of months ago The Greedy Pig held its first supper club, at Outlaws Yacht Club. “We wanted to show that there was more than one string to our bow”, said Stuart. “I have always loved to cook and constantly have ideas for new recipes – the supper club gives us a creative outlet…an opportunity to pull out all the stops and share some great food ideas.” Stuart has been gathering experience for years and has worked at some top restaurants around Leeds, including five years with a great team at Harvey Nichols and a couple of years with chef John Vennel at Haley’s Hotel, who now runs Vennel’s in Masham. Jo and Stuart decided to enter the supper club arena with a bang! Their first menu was an ambitious ‘Nose to Tail’. Almost every bit of that pig was served up in some mouthwatering combination. Oddments Jelly was a savoury jelly with trotter, cheek, tongue and ear, served with beetroot and horseradish; Rustic Country Pâté was made from shoulder, belly and homecured bacon, served with mustard pickles; Three Little Pigs presented black pudding with saffron and apple chutney, Boudin Blanc with remoulade and Chorizo Tortilla; Yorkshire Tapas included Serranitos – spleen, pepper and air dryed ham and Pinchitos Murranos – marinated heart kebabs. All served with a chicory salad with sherry dressing. This was followed by The Greedy

Pig Hog Roast served with a Madeira and kidney sauce. Had they put all their little piggies in one basket? How to top that for their next supper club? Simple… the Pig vegged out! Not being a meat eater this was right up my street. ‘Roots to Shoots’ was held upstairs at Handpicked Hall in The Grand Arcade – a lovely setting. A carpaccio of vegetables with avocado cream and black olive dressing was followed by Kitcheree balls, pickled cauliflower, confit lemon and curry mayonnaise; then Truffled Yorkshire Brie, filo pastry, mushroom & walnut salad with Old Winchester

pesto; Plantain Empanada and green rice with a corn salsa; followed by a light and lovely Autumn Chestnut Cheesecake with pear and cranberry salsa and candied chestnuts. Oh yes, there is definitely more than one string to that bow! It was a lovely evening of enthusing about the food and the non-vegetarians being truly surprised! Once again, it was so nice to sit down with a bunch of strangers and share a fabulous meal. The cheese came from George and Joseph, the new cheese shop in Chapel Allerton. The coffee was served up by North Star Roast (Meanwood) a brand new business and the only roasterie in Leeds. The Pig’s November outing was ‘Surf n Turf’ at The Stew & Oyster in Oakwood; and December’s ‘Olde English Christmas’, which will include partridge and stuffed goose (plus a veggie option of course!) will be at The Arch Café in the city centre – a café with a social conscience run by Age UK.

Cold Weather! With November, Autumn really turns to Winter. The clocks have gone back, the nights are long, cold and often wet, Bonfire Night has been and gone, the shops are full of Christmas offerings, and thousands of tons of leaf mulch are being deposited on our local roads and pavements. If we could just get Leeds United promoted and the Rhinos to regain their Super League title, almost all would be perfect (I did say almost!). The coming year will bring its own excitement and challenges. In Summer, Leeds will welcome the Tour de France – which will wheel its way (literally) through the centre of our ward. This is hugely exciting and a great opportunity to see a world-class event right on our doorsteps. It will require some significant road closures on the day though and some forward planning by many – watch this space for updates. In the coming year Neil, Peter
and I will continue to work hard to address the issues you bring to us during our surgeries, street surgeries, meet and greet events and through the many emails and calls I get in response to this column. Hopefully we will be able to bring some positive news about a new health centre for Alwoodley, overgrown trees, 20mph speed limits near schools, the list goes on and of course gets added to on a daily basis. We are also always on the look out for projects, groups and organisations within Alwoodley who need our help, either with a grant or with some advice (or both!) to start up their group or new project – not to be too clichéd – but your local councillors are always here to help. But please do contact your local Councillors if there are problems on particular roads so that, if necessary, we can arrange an extra sweep. Meanwhile, please also watch out for your elderly neighbours - they may be worried about the cost of fuel, particularly with the huge increases in fuel prices announced by some of the major suppliers just as Winter sets in. The Oakwood Farmers’ Market Committee is always looking for effective ways to reach new and established customers. The Market is already on facebook and is active on Twitter, as well as having a popular, regularly updated website. At one of their ‘thinking sessions’, they came up with the idea that a video promoting the market, its supporters and fantastic stallholders could be really useful…..and it’s a beauty! This lovely little film shows – volunteers set up the stalls early in the morning; how enthusiastic the community, stallholders enjoy the camaraderie and banter with customers and stallholders are customers; shoppers browse and try new things; and about the market. oundhay Park is not only a beautiful space in which to relax and enjoy nature, it also plays host to numerous activities and events throughout each year. The 2014 calendar, produced by Friends of Roundhay Park (FoRP), provides glimpses of just a few of these activities including the triathlon, rowing on the lake and Roundhay Primaries School Run, whilst at the same time showing the beauty of the Park across the seasons.
Pictures for the calendar were selected from entries to a photographic competition organised by FoRP earlier this year. “Response to the competition was excellent and we had a huge amount of material to select from”, said Mike Farnham, calendar production

It was also essential to make sure pictures were clearly identifiable as Roundhay Park. “Many of our calendars are bought as gifts for people who no longer live in Leeds. We’ve even had letters and donations to our funds from people living abroad who have received our calendar. “The calendar is hugely important as a fundraiser for the work we do in the Park. We have created the Friends’ Garden and opened the Geology Trail in the Gorge (in association with Leeds Geological Association). The History of Yorkshire in Just 150 Minutes! Over 4,000 years of Yorkshire’s history have been condensed into a two and a half hour epic by Horsforth residents Mark Saville and Geoff Druett. This amazing feat has taken over a decade to film. “Amassing the footage needed to encompass everything from the Ice Age up to today has indeed taken over 10 years”, said producer Mark. “Along the way 20 other films have been released, telling the story of individual towns and documenting people, industry and events that are now passing into history – such as the last coble fisherman at Filey.”

Former YTV Calendar newsman Geoff Druett presents the programme. He and Mark have worked together for the past eight years and it is he who is filmed walking up to Victoria Cave above Settle, being shown around Wentworth Woodhouse, and following the trail of Yorkshire’s textile industry from the abbeys to the handweaver, then on to the mills and the cloth being sold at Halifax’s Piece Hall. Mark also wrote the book
‘Horsforth at War’ and is currently writing a sequel, this time on World War I. He would like people whose relations lived in Horsforth at that time and/or served in the Armed Forces to contact him. Over 1,000 men were called-up from Horsforth and nearly a quarter of them were killed. The DVD (£14.99) is available from Mark on 0113 258 4680 or marksaville@btconnect.com, and on-line retailers.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Groundwork Leeds recently started a Men in Sheds project, based in Holbeck at Barkston House, Croydon Street, Leeds LS11 9RT (near Dunelm Mill).
Christmas Carol Concert for Cancer Charities at Leeds Minster The Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre and Macmillan Cancer Support are joining forces to host their first Christmas Carol Concert at Leeds Minster on Wednesday 18th December at 7pm.
It’s aimed primarily at men over 55 who’d like to try their hand at carpentry, woodturning, carving and whittling, in a fully equipped workshop - and it’s absolutely free! They can make whatever they like, learn new skills, revisit old ones, socialise, and help the local community while they’re at it by donating items or making items to order.
So, if you’re over 55, Men in Sheds is inviting you to get involved either as a participant or a volunteer – they are on the lookout for people with woodwork experience to share their skills. They would also welcome donations of wood and tools. Men in Sheds is open every Monday and Thursday from 10am - 4pm. For further information, contact Will Gore on 0113 238 0601, email will. gore@groundwork.org.uk or visit www.meninshedsleeds. org.uk

NCS Project Raises Funds for LGI Neo Natal Unit As part of a citizenship project, a group of young people held a variety of fundraising activities over the Summer and raised £316 for the Neo-Natal Unit at Leeds General Infirmary.
The money will buy a new ‘Apnoe Alarm’, which will provide further support for babies with breathing problems. The idea was born out of their involvement in the National Citizen Service (NCS) project delivered by Leeds City Council’s youth service. The project offers young people aged 16-17yrs the opportunity to meet new people, learn key life skills and do something positive in the community. NCS believes

HOME & GARDEN
Garden centres may be devoted to Santa but gardeners need not worry, the best way to buy for your garden this month is by post! Armchair shopping The internet and more traditional garden catalogues mean that no one has to battle through the tinsel to buy garden supplies. One of the nicest treats at this time of year is to leaf through one or two seed catalogues and choose what you will be growing next year, be it flowers or vegetables. The winter months are the perfect time to plant bare root trees, hedging and roses and there are many excellent on-line
suppliers whose websites you can browse to make your choices.
Jobs for fine days Fruit trees should be pruned now, the idea being to maintain an open ‘goblet’ shape. This ensures that air can circulate around flowers and developing fruit. Remove any crossing, diseased or dead branches. Clear fallen leaves from paving, ponds and lawns and save them in a compost heap or perforated bin bag to make leaf mould.
Spare a thought for the birds
Don’t forget to leave food out for the birds who will bring colour and song to your garden
Please don’t forget to leave food out for the birds who will bring colour and song to your garden on the coldest of days. In freezing weather they will also appreciate a bowl of water. Look out for flocks of long tailed tits seeking refuge in our gardens over Winter. With their pretty pink and black markings they are one of the smallest garden birds, each one weighing less than a one pound coin.
Natural Decorations
Christmas
Greenery from the garden adds a classic touch to festive decorations with Holly and Ivy being the most traditional of all. Any evergreen leaves will combine well with twigs and berries or fruits. To make a sumptuous wreath, make (or buy) a ring of strong wire and pad out with moss, then attach twigs and bind them in place firmly with fine wire. Birch twigs are perfect for this because they bend easily and have a lovely purple colour. Add sprigs of any garden evergreen such as Camellia, Laurel or Euonymus Fortunei and finish off with thee evenly spaced bold clusters of pine cones, brightly coloured fruit or berries. Things like chillies and mini oranges from the greengrocer can be attached using florist’s wire and will add an exotic touch.

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON After two cold Winters and a poor breeding season in Spring and Summer 2012, the numbers of resident birds were depleted at the start of this year’s nesting season. Conditions did not auger well in the cold March, but birds tended to delay activity until April. Little Egrets frequent muddy or sandy shores or marshy lakes, feeding on small fish, frogs and snails. In the event, a warm, dry Summer has delivered mainly good breeding success. Outcomes vary, however, according to species and local weather conditions. Familiar garden birds such as Blackbirds and Robins seemed to do badly. Rock-hard
A warm, dry Summer has delivered mainly good breeding success
ground in the dry Spring made it hard to find enough food for nestlings. By contrast, birds such as Blue and Great Tits, reliant on tree caterpillars to feed their young, did well in the dry June. The arid Spring benefitted ground-nesting birds, in sharp
contrast to the successive floods of 2012. Lapwings and Meadow Pipits, for example, did much better. Other beneficiaries were water birds such as Moorhens and Little Grebes and those nesting in holes in river banks such as Kingfishers and Sandmartins. Summer visitors, arriving late and benefitting from the glorious July and August did well, given the abundance of insects. Typical are Swallows and Blackcaps. Some species managed second and even third broods. A further consequence of recent conditions is the abundance of tree seeds and berries which will help to sustain birds in the coming Winter.

Yorkshire to Turn Yellow for Tour de France
Gardeners across the county are being encouraged to plant yellow flowers in honour of the Tour de France 2014 and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), in conjunction with Welcome to Yorkshire, is producing a factsheet to help gardeners turn Yorkshire yellow. There are over 80 different plants with yellow flowers or yellow foliage – including four varieties of rose. The factsheet has tips on what and when to plant, and how to maintain the plants to ensure that they will be at their blooming best when the world’s largest annual sporting event races through the county. “With the help of the RHS we want to enhance the county, creating show stopping floral displays that will wow the crowds next Summer”, said Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire. “The colour is synonymous with the Tour de France, so what better way to celebrate the race coming to the county than by
December2013 Area B.indd 40
With the help of the RHS we want to enhance the county, creating show stopping floral displays
drawing on the beauty of nature and making Yorkshire glow a gorgeous yellow while the world’s spotlight is on it”, added Ruth Evans, RHS Director of Education, Funding and Communities. Tracy Foster, a gold medal winning garden designer at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012, and North Leeds Life new garden columnist commented: “I think it is a fantastic idea that a county with so many beautiful gardens should welcome the Tour de France with flowers! With a dazzling variety of yellow flowers and plants to choose from we can be really creative and make The 2014 Grand Départ even more memorable.” So, the message is ‘Think Yellow’ when you are planning your planting! The Grand Départ of the Tour de France takes place in Yorkshire on 5th and 6th July. For more information on Le Tour, visit www.letouryorkshire.com
Skelton Grange Volunteers Undertake Wildlife Project The Conservation Volunteers Green team is carrying out a range of practical tasks to improve the urban nature area for wildlife and for visitors at Skelton Grange Environment Centre. This work is part of the Skelton Grange Wild Area project (supported by a grant of £16,635 from Biffa Award), which aims to improve the experience of visitors to the wildlife area. Volunteers have already carried out almost 150 days of work - improving access routes, installing new mushroom seats in a woodland classroom, and learning to use traditional scythes to manage the wildflower meadows. “The work we do with the Green Team will make a real difference to the children who visit the centre, as well as the wildlife that lives here”, explained project officer Toby Roberts. “It’s also been a fantastic opportunity for people to learn new skills – learning to use a scythe has been a real highlight!” The Green Team volunteer days take place every Friday. The group is open to adult volunteers of any level of experience, and sessions are led by experienced leaders who support and train new volunteers in the skills to improve the site for wildlife and visitors. SOUND & VISION If you’re
FILM
REVIEW
not bowled over by this movie you seriously
G R AV I T Y DIRECTED BY: ALFONSO CUARON STARRING: SANDRA BULLOCK, GEORGE CLOONEY CERT: 12A - RUNNING TIME: 91 MINS For the opening film of the 27th Leeds International Film Festival the organisers couldn’t have chosen a more auspicious feature. Gravity is truly an event movie in the best sense of the term, offering audiences a unique and unprecedented cinema experience. Since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival the buzz surrounding Gravity has risen to fever pitch with terms such as ‘game-changer’ and ‘groundbreaking’ tossed about with abandon. So, I’m pleased to report that Gravity is an example of hype and hyperbole being entirely justified. It is all of these things and more. If you’re not bowled over by this movie you seriously need to check your critical faculties and perhaps concede that cinema just isn’t for you. Much of the beauty of Gravity is in its simplicity and economy of setting and premise. To borrow a phrase from the title of Spiritualized’s seminal album, “Ladies and Gentlemen, we are floating in space”, and to witness this film in 3D is to experience that sensation in a particularly queasily visceral way. As the slow, creeping opening shot closes in on a spacecraft in earth’s orbit we are introduced to cocksure
December2013 Area B.indd 42
veteran astronaut, Matt Kowalski (Clooney) and nervy rookie Ryan Stone (Bullock), a medical engineer, who, after six months training, is on hand to assist with maintenance to the Hubble space telescope. Just as the routine operation is
need to check your critical faculties and perhaps concede that cinema just isn’t for you
about to be completed things go catastrophically wrong when a nearby satellite explodes and showers the astronauts with debris, destroying their shuttle and cutting off communication with mission control. What follows is the most breathlessly intense and deliriously exciting 90 minutes you’ll have spent in a cinema for quite some time. The stakes here are, quite literally, astronomically high as Kowalski and Stone risk becoming untethered and drifting out into infinite blackness. To my mind there are few things more terrifying than this prospect. The nearest comparable circumstance would be that of being adrift in open water in the middle of the ocean – in which case, while not exactly on terra firma, you’re at least still on Earth. In space, with no gravity, atmosphere, oxygen, essentially nothing to support life, one’s chances of rescue or survival quickly drop to zero. The title of the film refers to the one aspect of the situation that is most notable by its

absence. Gravity here is really the ghost at the feast, if it were a character it would be akin to that of Godot. What the film does brilliantly is use its expansive canvas to accentuate the human element of the story. We learn that Stone’s earthbound life has been touched by grief and loss. When Kowalski asks what she likes most about being up there she replies that she appreciates the silence. By placing the characters in such extreme isolation, Gravity’s human drama is writ large and, while there are many moments of armrest-clawing tension and hyperkinetic activity, the film reveals itself as more a meditative and philosophical piece than an action movie. It’s worth remembering that Gravity is not strictly a Sci-Fi film, it’s a drama about people confronting their humanity that happens to be set in space. Much has been made of the mindblowing technical achievements of the film and the innovative techniques used. Truly, special effects have rarely seemed so special. And yet, there have been naysayers, space-boffins who have been quick to point out the scientific inaccuracies in the film. This is just so much
December2013 Area B.indd 43
killjoy nitpicking and, I feel, easily dismissed as, for the layperson, Gravity retains an air of Science-Fact rather than Science-Fiction. It’s not often a film absolutely demands to be seen in 3D but this is certainly one example. However, while many would consider the jawdropping effects to be the star of the show, they don’t entirely eclipse or upstage the human performances on show. George Clooney exhibits his trademark reassuring and reliable charismatic charm and is perfectly cast as the personable and loquacious Kowalski. However, it’s Bullock’s portrayal of the fragile yet resilient Stone that really carries the film. The finely struck balance between strength and vulnerability in the face of such extreme and seemingly impossible odds underscores a picture that speaks to our inherently human need to connect with each other and the insistent and irrepressible urge to continue, to fight, to live when all seems lost. A resounding triumph, Gravity is a stand-alone feature and I wholeheartedly implore you to boldly go and catch it in 3D post haste.

Brawlers - Mothers and Fathers /Instagram Famous
Having seemingly exorcised some personal demons with his low-key and downbeat Post Breakdown Blues, singer-songwriter and erstwhile metaller, Harry George Johns, returns with a new band and seems to be having a great deal more fun. Indeed, as the chorus of Instagram Famous proclaims, “I feel better now we’ve talked about it”.
This freshly formed outfit comprises members of We Were Frontiers and Castrovalva and offers as excitable and propulsive a dose of Skate/PopPunk as one could hope for. The jagged, stabbing riffage of Mothers and Fathers sets the tone and shows Johns’ knack for tight concise arrangements with a keen ear for melody, there’s even the slightest hint of Beach Boys-esque tunefulness about the chorus. Similarly brisk, Instagram Famous springs out of the traps with the same pedal to the metal rockingness driven by frantic, ferocious and outrageously tight drums. On both tracks the band display impressive dynamism and rhythmic exactitude. Ahead of an official release these two cracking tracks can be found online and streamed from Brawlers Bandcamp. Brawler play The Cockpit on 14th December with support from Gnarwolves, a gig I suggest will be well worth checking out.

his first stage adaptation of the festive classic premiered at The Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, last year and was a smash hit. Beloved by generations, Briggs’ story is brought vividly to life by Pins and Needles Productions, who are passionate about finding theatrical, imaginative ways of telling stories and have produced six shows for a range of ages since forming in 2009. Father Christmas is aimed at the 2 – 6 age range. This warm and funny show is packed full of giggles for them and their families. Father Christmas awakes from a dream of Summer sun only to realise that it’s blooming Christmas Eve and the start of his longest night of the year. He gathers his reindeer together and prepares his sleigh and sets out on his long journey into the snowy night to deliver presents to sleeping children all over the world. But things don’t run smoothly. He

soon encounters soot covered chimneys and treacherous weather conditions. Meanwhile his cheeky pets, Cat and Dog, are up to plenty of mischief. Forty years after the story was first published, the story is as magical as ever and full of fun. Directed by Emma Earle and designed by Zoe Squire of Pins and Needles, it features original music played live by Jared Ashe, and the brilliant puppetry of puppeteer and theatre maker, Max Humphries. It is a Christmas treat not to be missed!

Chapel Allerton Wins Maths Competition! A team of young number crunchers from Chapel Allerton Primary School had all the right answers in the annual maths competition run by The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL). The team of four Year 6 pupils overcame teams from 23 other schools to take the trophy in GSAL’s Junior Maths Challenge. They earned their places following semi-finals involving nearly 50 schools from across Leeds and surrounding area. The team of Faith Hardy, Bethany Hare, Kaustabh Bhatnagar and Adam Powell proved to be a winning combination, as each decided a different part of the competition was their favourite. The tests included number grids, puzzles and a multiple choice maths challenge. “It was hard for us to pick a team from all our talented Year 6 mathematicians”, said Mrs Boland who accompanied the team to the competition. “I felt they had a good chance because I know how bright they are and they had come second in their semi-final. But it all comes down to how it goes on the day against some tough competition.”

Jake is Youngest Black Belt in the World! Jake Frood (5) from Meanwood, who attends Carr Manor Primary School, recently gained his Black Belt in Mixed Martial Arts, making him the youngest Black Belt ever! To achieve this he had to run two miles and then take part in a four-hour Martial Arts skills test, which included thin air work, work on pads, partner work, then sparring and exercises. At the graduation ceremony at The Grammar School at Leeds, he did a demonstration in front of 500 people. Jake’s achievement is amazing as he has battled through several
illnesses and operations. He has arthritis in his legs, which causes him extreme discomfort. Doctors advised gentle exercise and, as he had developed a keen interest in the martial arts after seeing ‘The Karate Kid’, his parents decided to sign him up for classes at the National Martial Arts College in Leeds. Because of his health problems, which included serious problems with eating, swallowing and breathing, Jake has failed to grow properly and is less than one metre tall. Without his love for martial arts he would never have had the determination to get through his illnesses.
He is now focusing on becoming a martial arts instructor himself and has started instructor training. If he carries on at the rate he is going he could be a certified qualified Martial Arts Instructor by the age of ten!

We Love Stories From panto to picture books – there was plenty to appeal to young story lovers during a recent event organised by The Grammar School at Leeds in partnership with Leeds City Museum. ‘We Love Stories’ was a free family fun day during half term. Harrogate Theatre ran panto workshops and brought plenty of costumes so children could get into character and enjoy their favourite stories. The event was inspired by the museum’s current exhibition ‘Through the Magic Mirror’, which takes young readers through a recreation of the imaginary world in the books of Anthony Browne. Children also had the

opportunity to try out the illustrator’s art, thanks to Huddersfield author and illustrator Stephen Waterhouse, who was invited along by Ilkley Literature Festival. “It was interesting to get some tips and find out how Stephen creates his ideas and see all the different media he uses to make his pictures”, said Megan Fletcher (11) from Spofforth. “I try to open up their imaginations and inspire them to create their own characters and express themselves through drawing”, said Stephen Waterhouse. “Everyone has a special style, there’s no actual way to draw and you’ll uncover your own drawing language so it has personality.”
