Dear Readers,

Isn’t this year flying? I can’t believe that the time has rolled around again to start thinking about gift giving – Oh, I know, there are some organised people who finished their Christmas shopping in July! I have to say I like to get in the mood. Feel that chill in the air. See the posters for pantomimes. Start the mince pie tastings. We make a few suggestions and encourage you to seek out some of our lovely little local shops – and there are many! We also had a chat with BBC Radio Leeds’ Johnny I’Anson about local radio; and caught up with Liam Steel who is directing The Jungle Book at The West Yorkshire Playhouse (which sounds fabulous!). There is also news of a super community production of Narnia at Left Bank Leeds on Cardigan Road, Headingley; Inkwell in Chapel Allerton is becoming a real community hub; REAP held a very successful Green Fair; and, of course, there are lots of new Community Notices. Don’t forget to check our website as you’ll find even more stories that we haven’t been able to feature in the magazine (www.northleedslife.co.uk) and follow us on Twitter (@northleedslife) where we regularly post events. The editorial deadline for the December edition is 1st November (before if possible!), and for advertising it’s 6th November. January deadlines are 1st and 6th December.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards Carole, Jack and the team

Originally from France, Marjorie got married in Leeds earlier this year. As many of her family and friends couldn’t make it, she held a second celebration in France.

“Friends and colleagues told me how lucky I was to get to wear my dress twice and how they would love to wear theirs again. So I decided to organise the ‘Wear your wedding dress again’ fundraiser! We have included party dresses, as not everybody has a wedding dress, but most girls have a glam dress just waiting for an opportunity to be worn.” Marjorie hopes to raise

THOMAS HARVEY (1812-1884) Anti-slavery campaigner and philanthropist

In the austere, shaded quiet of the Quaker burial ground in New Adel Lane, the plain gravestones record only names and dates - no statues or florid verses here, where all are equal. One stone bears the name of Thomas Harvey, who during his lifetime fought against slavery, war, cruelty and deprivation. These causes took him across the world – to the West Indies, Finland, Russia, Canada – in an era when such journeys meant long months of danger and hardship. But his home, his family and his daily work were here in Leeds. He was born in 1812 into a Quaker family in Barnsley, where his father was a linen manufacturer. The second of five children, he was educated at Barnsley Grammar School and the Quaker schools at Ackworth and York. But money ran short and at fifteen he was apprenticed to a chemist and druggist in Birmingham, to train for his future. There he met fellow Quakers like the Cadburys and Joseph Sturge, the eminent anti-slavery activist. In 1836 he was invited to accompany Sturge to the British colonies of the West Indies to investigate the condition of the former slaves, freed in 1834 but still bound by the plantation owners into harsh apprenticeship schemes. He helped Sturge produce a long report that persuaded Parliament to change this abusive system. Back in England, he moved to

LIFE AND STYLE

Many would have thought that, with the development of the internet, radio would have been swept away by the tide of new media. Not so! In the digital age, radio not only survives but thrives and nowhere more so than in the case of local broadcasting. Today radio is more popular than ever and you can listen to local radio from anywhere in the world.

ut, where we remain really lucky is in the area of local radio. Whereas in North America small local radio stations have been eaten up by huge corporations and have lost a lot of their relevant local content, here in the UK local radio thrives. We dropped in to BBC Radio Leeds to catch Johnny I’Anson, who we are lucky enough to talk to fairly often on his Friday Drive Show, to ask about his experience in local radio. “Believe it or not, I studied Exercise & Health at Uni and worked as a Sports Development Officer with Leeds City Council for some time”, he told us. “After a while I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do. I did some work experience at a local radio station then managed to get a part time job with BBC and I haven’t looked back.” Johnny’s first break came when he was asked to cover for the Early Breakfast Show (4 - 6am!). “I had to get up at 2am! But I thought

November2013 Area B.indd 10

I’d give it a go. You have to keep saying ‘yes’! The only advice I was given was ‘don’t swear’ and ‘be yourself’!” He was soon filling in for the Mid Morning Show. Then a little over two years ago, the Friday Drive Show came up, followed by Weekend Breakfast and now he is soundly entrenched at BBC, just being himself! “It’s all about communication. I feel I act as a catalyst. I connect listeners to people they feel they do not have access to. The content is hyper-local. BBC has a certain gravitas so people are happy to come and talk to us. We regularly talk to organisations and local politicians and try to hold them to account on behalf of our listeners.

We address topics of interest to our audience, focusing on being at the heart of the community.” Johnny’s aim is to facilitate a sort of personal connection that only local radio can – to give the audience a voice and involve the wider community in the conversation. Off air, he’s out reporting, finding out what people care about. “I love getting out with the Show. Broadcasting from Leeds Festival this year was brilliant. I’d love more time to get out, to be more creative and add more colour and texture to what we say and do.” So, turn your radio on! Become part of that conversation and enjoy some great local radio!

LIFE AND STYLE

Recently, we were lucky enough to spend a night at Raithwaite Hall, just north of Whitby. It took just two and a half hours to get there and as soon as we walked in the door it felt like a great weight had been lifted from our shoulders!

www.raithwaitehallwhitby.co.uk 01947 661662 fabulous setting Raithwaite Hall is set in 80 acres. Bought by Skelwith Leisure, a York-based company, a few years ago, it has been transformed into a lovely, five-star hotel managed by Small Luxury Hotels (SLH), who manage exclusive properties all over the world. Starting with a small manor house and garden centre, Skelwith Leisure preserved what they could of the original building then wrapped a new building around it to create a luxury hotel with 45 bedrooms, a lovely little spa (with pool, Jacuzzi, fitness room and range of treatments); The Brace Restaurant, that opens into

a conservatory overlooking a beautifully kept garden; and Poachers’ Bar, which retains the layout of the original house. Skelwith’s ambition didn’t end there – they renovated the Lake House, just five minutes walk from the main Hall overlooking a small lake, as the name suggests. Consisting of just six bedrooms, this selfcatering facility with its super kitchen and large lounge is perfect for special gatherings. And, Raithwaite Hall will provide as much or as little catering as you like. The most recent addition is The Keep – its castellated façade hides a smart, contemporary interior. Twenty-eight rooms wrap around the building, each with its own little balcony area. A large central area houses a bar and lounge with numerous deep leather sofas and chairs in shades of grey and burgundy, and a restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. It is proving a very popular venue for groups.

They thought of everything! We stayed in one of the deluxe rooms in the Hall which was wonderfully spacious with a lovely seating area with circular table and armchairs and a king-

size bed that I seriously wanted to have wrapped so I could take it home – definitely the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in! The bathroom was large enough to swing a very large cat in – or even several of the smaller variety. Every detail was covered – lovely toiletries, soft robes and slippers, plenty of towels, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, tea and coffee, bottled water, Wi-fi, radio and huge TV. Although walking, golf (Whitby Golf course is just across the road), fossil hunting on the nearby beach or mooching around Whitby might beckon, you might be very tempted never to leave your room!

Sole on crushed potatoes, a green salad with tarragon dressing – all delicious. Desserts were works of art - Tiramisu with Liquorice ice cream, and Rhubarb flavoured Iced Parfait with Ginger ice cream – it was a shame to eat them, but force ourselves we did!

Yorkshire sourced products Of course, as far as possible, all ingredients are proudly Yorkshire sourced – the fish from down the road, the meat from Ripon, all the vegetables, cheese, preserves are local. The bar serves Black Sheep brews, the tea is Yorkshire tea and

devoured by one of us, while the Raithwaite muesli, fresh fruit salad and rhubarb (yes, from Wakefield!) was so good the experience had to be repeated.

A wonderful meal We did, however, leave it and made our way to The Brace for dinner. It was already busy when we got there and included a large birthday celebration – happily, at one end of the restaurant, folding doors can be pulled across so it didn’t intrude on other diners. The food was great. Being by the sea we thought let’s do seafood! Scallops (hand-picked – you’d never want to stress out a scallop!) and smoked salmon went down a treat. A basket of various delicious warm breads quickly disappeared. Then on to Turbot on a bed of spinach a n d

What a lovely team!

the coffee is from Taylor’s of Harrogate, and the biscuits in the rooms are from Botham’s in Whitby. Breakfast was another treat – what choice! A hot buffet and the largest selection of cereals, fruit and yogurts I have ever seen. The locally sourced sausages, bacon, eggs, mushrooms etc. were quickly

Everyone wants you to relax and enjoy yourself

I really have to mention the service. What a lovely team! Everyone was so enthusiastic about Raithwaite and was happy to chat about the development. When we bumped into one of the gardeners as we walked around he outlined future stages of development on the 80-acre estate, including eco cabins and chalets. Everybody we met had a smile and would enquire if we were enjoying our stay or ask if we needed anything. In the restaurant glasses were refilled almost before we were aware they needed to be and plates smoothly removed. They were lovely and it was a real pleasure to stay there. What’s great is that Raithwaite Hall is so accessible – a couple of hours and you reach this little haven where everyone really wants you to relax and enjoy yourself. They all seem to enjoy it so much you can’t help but do the same.

THE NARNIA EXPERIENCE AT L E F T B A N K

From 25th November to 8th December, Left Bank Leeds on Cardigan Road will be transformed into a world of magic, where animals talk and battles are fought. Step through the wardrobe and befriend the creatures, escape wicked plans, battle evil and triumph to be crowned kings and queens of Narnia!

The Narnia Experience brings the C.S Lewis’ story ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ to life through immersive, walk-though theatre. Left Bank will become Narnia – the land where it is always Winter but never Christmas. Volunteer performers, set maker and creatives from across Leeds are currently preparing for a sensational two week run of this much loved tale. Launched at the beginning of September, with a script picnic for all the Narnian family, rehearsals are now underway. This is a big piece of community theatre requiring more than 160 performers, 40 ushers and about 200 construction workers, costumiers and set designers, all of whom are volunteers. This is not normal ‘sit down’ theatre, groups of 30 will enter through a wardrobe full of fur coats into a Winter wonderland. They then split into two groups – one group is ‘Lucy’ and the other ‘Edmund’. They take different routes through

November2013 Area B.indd 16

the story, interacting with the characters and experiencing the adventure together. Lucy’s group meets Mr Tumnus, Mr & Mrs Beaver, and Father Christmas, becoming friends and being led to Aslan’s camp. Whereas Edmund’s group has a scarier time, going to the White Witch’s palace, getting chased by wolves, taken prisoner and possibly turned to stone! The production will run morning, afternoon and evening from Monday 25th November to Sunday 8th December. Tickets are available from www. thenarniaexperience.com/booktickets For further information visit www.thenarniaexperience. com or email narniaexperience@ outlook.com

DOUBLE AWARD FOR FORMER THEATRE MANAGER Peter Sandeman, the former general manager at the City Varieties Music Hall, was recently presented with two awards – the Philip Windsor Spanner Award for outstanding services to theatre, on behalf of the Association of British Theatre Technicians NorthNet (ABTT); and Old Theatres Magazine presented him with a certificate recognising the huge contribution he has made to the theatre industry over 25 years and his achievements at the City Varieties. Before being made redundant by Leeds Grand Theatre & Opera House Ltd. last year, Peter had been general manager at the City Varieties since 1988. He transformed the popularity of the venue by presenting an eclectic programme of light entertainment. Among his achievements was the introduction of a different style of pantomime, the latest being Rock’n’Roll pantomime, which was an instant success. Sandeman was also heavily involved with the recent £9.9m refurbishment of the venue.

ARTS & CULTURE

The ideas behind The Paper Birds’ new play, ‘On the One Hand’, began at West Yorkshire Playhouse in April 2012. Director Jemma McDonnell and co-founder of The Paper Birds, Kylie Walsh, worked with a group of women aged 55+ who were attending ‘Heydays’, a Playhouse community arts initiative. Over a two-week period, the group devised ‘Aged’, a unique performance presented as part of the Playhouse’s Transform Festival. The project allowed The Paper Birds to collect stories, and conduct research that formed the background to ‘On the One Hand’. The aim was to explore age and how it affects people at different stages through life. “We wanted to make a show that explored age as a theme in response to our turning 30 and coming to terms with how our age defined us”, explained Kylie. “What was expected of us? What did society think of what we were doing? We started analysing our lives, and considering age in relation to other women.”

November2013 Area B.indd 18

In September 2012, The Paper Birds worked with a group of participants aged 9 -18 at Live Theatre, Newcastle, completing their research. Then Jemma and Kylie started to formulate the stories they’d collected into a script. Working closely with dramaturg Ben Francombe, they honed the intertwined narratives that form ‘On the One Hand’. With a cast aged 18 to sixty-something, the six roles present the many different stages of life. From youth, ambition and flying the nest, to care homes and dementia, this production explores the choices women are forced to make as they journey through life. Rehearsals began at West Yorkshire Playhouse in May this year, with Hannah Lambsdown from Bingley Grammar School cast in the role of ‘Teen’; Kylie from The Paper Birds as Thirty, Tracey-Ann Liles as Forty, and Illona Linthwaite as Sixty and Elderly. The Paper Birds musical director Shane Durrant, who has worked with the company for over 10 years, composed the original score, collaborating with local Leeds musicians Rosie Doonan and Gary Stewart in the recording. As The Paper Birds’ tenth anniversary production, this exploration of ageing is an apt and mature leap for the Leeds-based theatre collective. ‘On the One Hand’ is at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 21st – 23rd November. FOUR CITY COUNCIL HERITAGE SITES AWARDED TOP LEARNING AWARDS Leeds Museum Discovery Centre, Leeds Art Gallery, Thwaite Mills and Leeds Industrial Museum have each earned a Sandford Award from the Heritage Education Trust, recognising the high standard of heritage learning on offer.

A lot of hard work is put in on a dayto-day basis to provide the public with a great experience

he winners join four other city sites holding the award – Temple Newsam House, Leeds City Museum, Abbey House Museum and Kirkstall Abbey (which was recently shortlisted in the ‘Britain’s Favourite Heritage Site’ category of the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2013).

This success follows the news that all nine of the Council’s museums and galleries have also been granted full accreditation by Arts Council England, which sets nationally agreed standards for UK museums. To qualify museums must meet standards on how they are managed, for the services they offer and how they care for collections. “We are fortunate to have

some fantastic arts and heritage sites across the city”, said Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for leisure and skills. “I am delighted that this has been recognised in the Sandford Awards and by Arts Council England in their Accreditation scheme. “A lot of hard work is put in on a day-to-day basis to provide the public with a great experience, and I would like to thank the council’s heritage team for their efforts. These awards are recognition of their skill and commitment, and I look forward to seeing our heritage sites continuing to provide a great service in the future.”

The Association of Blind Asians (ABA) was founded in 1989 to provide a range of support services to visually impaired people in Leeds, and to help potentially isolated people to connect with other service providers. The Initiative, which was founded by the Duke of York in 1998, exists to both encourage and reward innovative and inspirational community projects in Yorkshire and the Humber. ABA representatives travelled to Bridlington’s Royal Hall to attend the luncheon at which His Royal Highness presented recipients with their citations. ARTS & CULTURE

A celebration of Irish arts and culture kicks off on 31st October and runs until 26th November. Dozens of events, including music sessions, literary events, film and educational events will take place at venues across Leeds, bringing some of Ireland’s finest artists to the city. Organised by the Leeds-based Irish Arts Foundation, events are designed to appeal to both those of an Irish background and people from the wider community with an interest in music and the arts.

“The thinking behind the Leeds Gathering is to provide a platform for the Irish community in Leeds to showcase their rich and vibrant cultural traditions”, said Des Hurley, CEO at Irish Arts. “We are also interested in developing new audiences for Irish arts and culture.” The Leeds Gathering features some of the most dynamic local, national and international performers in the world of Irish and Celtic arts. This year’s festival features performances from supergroup Lunasa, Dervish’s Cathy Jordan with Rick Epping and Seanan Brennan, a concert in the beautiful settings of the Leeds City Varieties from Cara Dillon, Scottish stars Lau and, from Waterford, Martin Murray & Dylan Bible. Two films by Thaddeus O’Sullivan will also be screened, with an introduction from Professor Lance Pettit. And, a play about the 1978 Rugby match between Munster and the mighty All-Blacks, ‘Alone it

November2013 Area B.indd 22

Lunasa Stands’, will be presented. Add to this traditional Irish music sessions, instrument workshops and a presentation of Donal Cox’s ‘A Journey to the Fifth Province’ and there is surely something to appeal to all tastes. The official launch of the festival is at 8pm 31st October in the O’Meara Lounge, Leeds Irish Centre, with special guest speakers Keith Wakefield (Leader, Leeds City Council), Tommy Moran (Business Development & Operations Director, Moran Hotel Group), Professor David Cooper (Chair, Irish Arts Foundation) and a representative of the Irish Embassy. ARTS & CULTURE

The Quarry Theatre at West Yorkshire Playhouse will be transformed into the humid jungles of India from 30th November – 18th January, as The Jungle Book is brought to life by multi award-winning director and choreographer Liam Steel.

e caught up with Liam recently to try and find out what he might have in store for us and, frankly, cannot wait to see it now! Disney may have offered a ‘a good introduction’, but this new version for the Playhouse offers so much more. “We have gone back to the book”, explained Liam, “and have commissioned a new script from Rosanna Lowe. The Jungle Book is made up of a number of short stories. We go back and forwards in time, taking sections and making a complete story out of it. We are currently tweaking it here and there. It is constantly evolving. What we will end up with will be a very exciting, original piece of work.” Liam has a passion for family shows and has worked with theatres all over the country, including Nottingham Playhouse, The Lyric Hammersmith, Birmingham

November2013 Area B.indd 24

Rep, The Royal Court, Manchester Royal Exchange, The Royal Shakespeare Company, and six productions at the Library Theatre, Manchester. “This could be a child’s first theatre experience and it’s really important that it is an exciting piece of theatre”, he said. “The Jungle Book is all about a young man’s search for identity. He’s asking questions about the world – who am I? Where do I belong? Especially when he comes from a different culture. It’s an amazing story.” This mesmeric adaption uses dance, physical theatre, puppetry, masks, song and

theatrical-magic to tell Mowgli’s story. The jungle is alive with creatures and finding the essence of the animals has been crucial to creating the spectacle. The actors have worked hard to capture the physicality of the beasts. For example, the wolves appear on blades like those worn by paralympians. They move in a different way projecting the strength and power of the wolf. Each animal’s movement has been carefully observed – even entailing a trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park! The puppets (made by Rachel Canning), masks headdresses and the wonderful costumes by Laura Hopkins all contribute towards creating this fascinating world, as do the lighting and the music. Liam commissioned composer Niraj Chag to write the music for the show. It has a specific traditional Asian feel, but is very contemporary too. I think we are in for a treat! Liam and The Playhouse have brought together an amazing group of actors and an incredibly talented creative team. From what we’ve heard, The Jungle Book will be absolutely stunning. Liam Steel also created all the musical staging and choreography for the film version of LES MISéRABLES.

Rugby League will feature in an art exhibition at Leeds Town Hall, timed to coincide with the Rugby League World Cup coming to Leeds. ‘ On the Edge – the moving body in sport’ will feature ceramic sculpture that captures the movement and physicality of sport by local artist Mandy Long. The exhibition will include several pieces featuring Rugby League, inspired by the Leeds Rhinos, and Mandy will donate 40% of any sales to the Leeds Rugby Foundation charity.

Mandy held a very successful exhibition at Headingley Carnegie Stadium in 2012, which led one leading sports coach of Olympic medal winners to comment, “every sports stadium should have an art gallery”. One of Mandy’s works featuring football was recently presented by Bournemouth FC to Real Madrid at a pre-season friendly with the famous Spanish club. FOOD AND DRINK

In the past couple of years there has been an outbreak of supper clubs. Apparently there are even websites that can direct you to supper clubs all over the world! Leeds is alive with them! But it wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago that I actually experienced one.

his supper club was billed as an ‘authentic Persian experience’. That was intriguing enough but when I realised that Afsaneh Kaviani, who was hosting it, had also made it to the last eight on Masterchef, I thought ‘This has to be good!’ And it was! Thirteen strangers turned up to share the experience and left nearly four and a half hours later as friends. It was a lovely evening, starting with a refreshing watermelon cocktail and tasty hors d’oeuvres. We then sat down to a veritable feast featuring dishes from all over Iran. There was a smoked aubergine, garlic and tomato dip; fried aubergine topped with whey, mint and saffron; spicy chic pea, spinach and cumin stew in lavash bread baskets; spinach and yogurt dip topped with fried onions; and herb salad with caramelized butternut squash and crumbled feta,

layered with sour bay berries and topped with pistachios and almonds; braised lamb shanks in saffron jus; tomato, split lentils and okra stew. This is really the way food should be enjoyed – in comfort and sharing with others. The conversation flowed and the food kept coming until eventually C we were sated! The meal was rounded off with baked M fig with saffron ice cream and rose Y cream, followed by black Persian CM tea and mint tea and Persian sweets. WOW! MY “When I was applying for CY Masterchef I never realised just how much of a life-changing CMY experience it would turn out K to be”, said Afsaneh. “It has allowed me to pursue something I have always been passionate

There seemed to be an endless stream of dishes being passed from one to the other… Chicken with prunes and straw potatoes; a delicious rice with broad beans and dill; a positively gorgeous sea bass stew with tamarind and herbs; saffron rice

about and cooking has now taken over my life!” Long may it continue. This was such an enjoyable evening – fabulous food and great company.

COMMUNITY NEWS

News From Your Councillors CLLR DANIEL COHEN

Alwoodley Ward

This month I need to talk rubbish!

If all goes to plan, at some point this month we will all receive leaflets from Leeds City Council’s Refuse Team, informing us of a major change to how our wheely bins are collected. Instead of our black bins being collected each week

Let me have your thoughts on alternate weekly collections

Sleeping Rough Like most people, I have pretty well always known where I will sleep the night. But on 26th September I arrived in City Square to join Cllr David Nagle and around 100 others, touring the rough sleeping sites of Leeds before bedding down in Leeds Minster churchyard for a sponsored sleep-out for Simon on the Streets.

and green bins collected monthly, we will be moving to each bin being collected on alternate weeks. Put simply, while we will still all receive a weekly bin collection – one week our green bin will be collected, the following week our black bins will be collected. This is definitely going to help with the green bins, which by the end of the month are usually full to overflowing for many of us. As for the black bins, hopefully being left for two weeks won’t lead to them being be too unpleasant and unhygienic, especially in the summer months. Do let me have your thoughts on the new alternate weekly bin collections – particularly if you encounter any problems or difficulties once it is brought in. While I am asking for your thoughts and feedback,

here is another topic where I would very much welcome your views. As regular North Leeds Life readers will know, driving too fast down narrow streets and in built up areas, is a regular concern of North Leeds residents. There are moves across the city to introduce 20mph zones on quite a number of roads that are currently 30 mph. What do you think about this? Will it slow cars down or will drivers ignore this in the same way as some do the 30mph limits? Do let me know so we can feed this back to Highways Officers. For any and all local concerns and queries your local councillors are always here to help. Have a great month

The familiar Headrow and Briggate felt different and threatening in the dark as a completely unknown world was revealed. Our guide told of sleeping off the ground on fire escapes to conserve heat, sheltering near particular buildings to avoid wind, and the risk of being urinated on in your sleep. She also told of being attacked and kicked in the head, only to receive a profuse apology from a reveller because he had not realised she was a woman, and tragic stories of close friends dying every Winter. More heartening were tales of care from volunteer workers, and rough sleepers moving on after years on the streets to get accommodation and jobs.

We were watched over near the Minster, but it was still unnerving to hear drunken disturbances in the small hours knowing we were unprotected by physical barriers, to have sleep disturbed by wind, and to be rudely awakened in the dark before bussing home for a shower, donning a suit, and getting off to a regular trustee meeting. Thanks to Simon on the Streets for showing us the practical reality of homelessness however briefly. If you would like to sponsor this sleep-out, please go to www.justgiving.com/bill-urry

COMMUNITY NEWS

Inkwell, on Potternewton Lane in Chapel Allerton, is rapidly becoming a ‘community hub’. Located in what was previously the Shoulder of Mutton pub, and run by Leeds Mind, Inkwell was set up to improve mental wellbeing through engagement in creativity. Since it opened three years ago, Inkwell’s activities have expanded to include a programme of community art classes; a craft café on Thursday afternoons; numerous workshops; and a fabulous vegetarian café on Saturdays (the cakes look amazing!) all run by volunteers. The community is taking advantage of the relaxed ambiance, and at different times in the week you’ll find Secret Cinema screenings, acoustic music evenings, the Seven Jazz choir practicing; workshops run by the music charity Cloth Cat and various meetings. When we dropped in recently on a Saturday there was a gathering of 16 expectant parents who, following a talk, were sitting down to a very yummy looking lunch in one area, whilst a needle felting class was winding up in another. And, everyone could still enjoy the exhibition by local artists that was part of the Chapel Allerton Festival. Four part-time staff and a great bunch of volunteers keep everything ticking over seamlessly. In fact, there are some super volunteering opportunities. Inkwell also works with organisations like The Swarthmore Centre and the WEA, and offers work experience and training in partnership with Workplace Leeds. Outside, a terrace and large

garden provide the perfect setting for community gatherings – like Bonfire Night on 5th November, 5.30 – 7.30pm. Work is about to start on the fine wooden sculpture (made out of scraps of wood!) that will be set alight. There will be a small entry fee and a fireworks display. To one side of the garden is a thriving vegetable patch that was set up with the help of The Conservation Volunteers. The fruits of the garden are used in Inkwell’s Saturday café of course. There are plans afoot for more drop-in session and day-long workshops that will be open to all – including pottery, jewellery and felt toys. You could also choose to join the Friends of Inkwell (just £15 a year) – so far they have raised the money to purchase the café’s coffee machine. HOME & GARDEN

34

Falling leaves and cool temperatures prevail as the garden begins to sleep for the Winter, but there are still plenty of jobs to be done. In the Borders Chopping back the perennials can be very therapeutic, and floppy dead plants should be removed to the compost heap. But resist the urge to clear everything away. Many grasses and perennials will still be standing tall with dried flower or seed heads that can look stunning. These also make perfect Winter homes for hibernating beneficial insects such as ladybirds as well as providing seed for birds. Examples include Teasels, Fennel, Sedum and Verbena. Best organic practice is to keep soil covered over Winter. A cover of fallen leaves or a suitable mulch helps to stop soil erosion and the washing away of nutrients and it also insulates your plants. If you use fallen leaves, make sure that you spread them around

evenly and don’t leave them in thick drifts. There are many things you can to use as mulch – from composted bark to mushroom compost or leaf mould.

Winter Pots Plant up a few pots of Winter bedding to cheer up your door step. Winter pansies look sweet and cheerful in little terracotta pots and can be under-planted with bulbs such as mini narcissi or tiny tulips for an extra burst of colour in Spring. Fabulous Winter arrangements can also be created using evergreen perennial plants such as Carex, Ivy and purple leaved Heuchera. Pots that you are leaving out through the Winter need to be raised raising onto ‘pot feet’ or bricks to help prevent them from freezing and cracking.

On the Veg Patch Vegetable growers are being rewarded with a harvest of Pumpkins

Hasn’t it been a great Summer? Vegetable growers are still being rewarded with a harvest of Pumpkins, Onions, Leeks, Beetroots and Swedes amongst other things. If you would like to be harvesting this time next year, start planning what you would like to grow. Garlic cloves can be planted now (any time before Christmas is fine) and each clove should have formed a new bulb by about August next year. Push them into the soil about 15cm apart so that the pointed tip is uppermost and is just under the surface.

YORK GATE WINS YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM GOLD York Gate Garden on Back Church Lane in Adel was recently awarded a Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Award – and this was the first time it entered the competition! York Gate was created by the Spencer family during the second half of the twentieth century and bequeathed to the national horticulture charity Perennial in 1994, so that it could continue to be enjoyed by the garden-loving public. The judges were impressed with the garden’s unique style and Perennial’s work in maintaining the character of the original design, while investing in its future. Perennial has undertaken works to refurbish various sections of the garden this year and has plans to develop it further. The garden was recognised under the ‘Public, Private and Charitable Establishments’ category. As well as reaching an exceptional standard of horticulture, it was commended for fitting well with the charity’s aims and being a good vehicle to promote its work of helping horticulturists and their families during times of need. “It is a great achievement that York Gate has been recognised with this award”, said Martin Walker, Head Gardener at York Gate. “It is testament to the hard work of our small team. Perennial exists to support everyone who works in the UK’s green spaces when the going gets tough – be that through illness, bereavement, debt or workplace injury. Perennial’s help is needed more than ever at the moment, so it is important to be able to raise the profile of the charity among the garden-going public. We have had a fantastic Summer at York Gate and we hope that this award will help attract even more visitors to the garden.” For further information visit: www.perennial.org.uk or call 0113 267 8240.

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON As Autumn advances, many birds from Iceland, Scandinavia, northern Europe and Russia are arriving to spend the Winter here. Among these are wigeon, a mediumsized duck with a short neck, large rounded head, small bill and pointed tail. Males are colourful with chestnut head and neck, creamy-yellow forehead and crown, greyishpink breast and white belly patch, the rest of the body being grey with a black and white stern. Though squat and shortlegged on the ground, wigeon are swift, elegant birds in flight, with pointed wings.Little Egrets frequent muddy or sandy shores or marshy lakes, feeding on small fish, frogs and snails.

Though squat and shortlegged on the ground, wigeon are swift, elegant birds in flight

Autumn and Winter dusks echo to the evocative whistling call of these birds. Wigeon inhabit coastal estuaries and salt marches but also inland lakes and reservoirs. They are, for example, regularly found at Eccup Reservoir, Fairburn Ings and on the sea at Scalby Cliffs, Scarborough. A small resident

population breeds in upland Britain such as in the Pennines and including Grimwith Reservoir, near Hebden. Winter birds feed on grass in dense flocks and also by dabbling and upending in shallow water seeking seeds, shoots and roots. Numbers are relatively stable year by year.

The highly anticipated sci-fi drama ‘Gravity’, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, will open LIFF27 on Wednesday 6th November, screening in 3D at the new Everyman cinema. From Alfonso Cuarón, director of Children of Men, Gravity is a unique and unforgettable cinema experience about a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission with a veteran astronaut. On a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes.

Leeds International Film Festival runs from Wednesday 6th – Thursday 21st November, and includes 163 feature films, short film programmes and events, presented at over 250 screenings in four main venues: Leeds Town Hall, Hyde Park Picture House, Vue Leeds at the Light, and the Everyman. The Official Selection hosts special previews of some of the most acclaimed films of the year, such as the winner of the Palme d’Or, ‘Blue is the Warmest Colour’ , a beautifully crafted love story about a deeply passionate relationship between two young women. Other award winners in the Official Selection include Romanian drama ‘Child’s Pose’, which won the Golden Bear at the

November2013 Area B.indd 38

Berlin Film Festival, Alexander Payne’s meditative and often hilarious delight ‘Nebraska’ and Alain Guiraudie’s striking and offbeat ‘Stranger by the Lake’. Fanomenon is the home of cult and fantasy cinema at Leeds International Film Festival and the line-up for this year is a heady mix of exciting new genre experiences. Thrilling exclusives include the superb South Korean action blockbuster ‘Cold Eyes’, and a unique cinema presentation for the complete animated ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Returns’, screening with a brand new documentary about Frank Miller. The ever popular annual marathons of Night of the Dead at the Hyde Park Picture House and Day of the Dead at Leeds Town Hall will together feature more than twenty hours of international horror with highlights including Australian black comedy ‘100 Bloody Acres’ and brilliant Israeli thriller ‘Big Bad Wolves’. Retrospective programmes offer opportunities to rediscover forgotten gems and to see celebrated classics in the grand setting of Leeds Town Hall.

Director retrospectives include Walerian Borowczyk, the maverick Polish animator and avant-gardist, and Japanese master Masaki Kobayashi, with rare screenings of his breathtaking samurai classics ‘Hara-Kiri’ and ‘Samurai Rebellion’ alongside his milestone Japanese wartime epic, the 579minute ‘The Human Condition’. Cinema Versa is dedicated to the documentary, showcasing low budget, independent features: alternative music docs, grassroots political activist films and profiles of mavericks and outsiders. This year’s Music on Film section celebrates a diverse range of musical and film styles including the unconventional new tour film ‘Mistaken for Strangers’ about indie darlings The National and ‘Harlem Street Singer’ about the legendary ragtime guitarist Reverend Gary Davis, whose story mirrors that of popular music in the twentieth century. Closing LIFF27 on Thursday 21st November is a rare screening of Hungarian director Gyórgy Pólfi’s unique ‘Final Cut: Ladies and Gentlemen’, an irresistible celebration of cinema, telling the ultimate love story using tiny excerpts from hundreds of movies ranging across film history.

The Horsforth 10K on Sunday 29th September experienced another bumper entry – which must have pleased Horsforth Harriers’ Race Director Bob Foulkes, who is stepping down after five years at the helm of both of the club’s annual 10K races. Earlier this year, in the Apperley Bridge Canter (ABC), Woodhouse Grove’s Director of Music, Phillip Tedd, romped home in 33:06. Proving this was no fluke, he was also victorious in the Horsforth 10K, completing an impressive double win in 33:18. He was closely followed by Ian Fisher of Otley AC in 33:52, with Harrogate Harriers’ Chris Miller third in 34:13. In the ladies race, Keighley and Craven’s Amy Green was triumphant in 38:29. Runner-up was Donna Edmondson-Booker of Idle AC in 39:29, who also finished in second place at the ABC. Third placed was Skyrac’s Jenny Beaumont, 41:38, a mere seven seconds ahead of Kirkstall’s Shamiso Sisimayi. This year saw the introduction of team prizes and the men’s team prize was claimed by Valley Striders, while Bingley Harriers took the ladies team prize. 543 runners completed the 2013 race and full results can been viewed on the Horsforth Harriers website at www. horsforthharriers.co.uk. Thanks to the generosity of the running community, a sizeable sum was raised for the race’s designated charity, the Joint Activities and Motor Education Service (JAMES). JAMES has operated in the Bradford and Keighley district for nearly 30 years, working with disadvantaged young people and their families and providing a

YOUNGER LIFE

At the start of each school year, Froebelian School in Horsforth adopts a new charity. This year the children were excited to learn that their new charity would be Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Thelma Wilson, the local Guide Dog representative, recently visited the school to tell the children all about the charity and she brought along two guide dogs – ‘Alma’ (a retired Guide Dog) and the young, lively ‘Titan’, who is just completing his training. “This is such an important charity and one that the school strongly believes in”, said Mr Tranmer, the Headmaster. “We

have a lot of dog lovers at the school and everyone is really excited about raising money for such a special cause. Thelma will be coming back to the school to speak to each class individually, to raise awareness and understanding, and to help with fundraising ideas.” The Froebelian School is a thriving

independent school for 190 boys and girls aged from three to eleven. It aims to provide children with a happy learning environment where they are challenged and supported to achieve personal excellence.

On Saturday 9th November, Stockeld Park (between Wetherby and Spofforth) will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Gathering of Santa’s Elves! The current record stands at 762 and they are hoping, with a little help from their friends, to smash this and bring the record to Yorkshire. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. The event starts at 10.30am with the official count taking place at 11am. Each elf will be provided with T-shirt, elf hat and elf ears, and is encouraged to wear red or green trousers. Elves will also receive a certificate commemorating the fact that they have been part of a world recordbreaking attempt and will also be entitled to a 50% discount on one activity at Stockeld Park on the

day. You can choose from ice-skating, Nordic Ski, the Enchanted Forest, the Maze and much more. There will be reindeer in their pen from midday and Santa will arrive for a sleigh parade at 3pm. All proceeds from the event will go to Martin House Children’s Hospice. “This is going to be a fantastic event involving the whole community and we are delighted to be involved”, said Martin House Events Manager Caroline Hudson. “Fingers crossed that we break the record. Martin House needs to raise nearly £5 million every year, most of which comes from fundraising and donations.” To enter, visit www.martinhouse.org.uk or call 01937 844569. For Marcus Sedgwick, a garden shed is more than a place to store the lawnmower. The award-winning author of young adult fiction got his audience of Year 9 pupils at The Grammar School at Leeds involved by showing them pictures of his shed, where he works every day, and asking them to select objects to quiz him about.

The images on the shed wall triggered fascinating insights into how Marcus approaches his writing. For example, Star Wars serves as inspiration whenever he suffers writer’s block – like much fantasy it follows a standard structure for the journey of the archetypal hero. The word PLAY reminds him that writing is sometimes easy and sometimes not, it’s important to play and enjoy it! “The pupils were a delight and made my life easy by asking good, pertinent questions”, said Marcus. “I ask them to choose

November2013 Area B.indd 48

the objects they were curious about, so they could feel they had invested something in the presentation. “I love chatting to young people - I meet great, intelligent and smart teenagers every week.” Marcus’s ‘Revolver’, a psychological thriller set in a snowy Arctic wilderness, seemed to be a favourite. “You have to think hard about what’s going on in the book”, said Hassan Iqbal. “It was great to meet Marcus and get an insight into how he writes.”

CHILDREN GET SET AND GO AT NEW ROUNDHAY PARK RUN Children in North East Leeds will benefit from a new free weekly run at Roundhay Park, thanks to funding from local Councillors. Councillor Sharon Hamilton and colleagues on the Inner North East Area Committee have provided £1,500 to set up the Roundhay Junior Park Run. The 2km for children aged 4 – 14 will be organised by Parkrun UK, and will take place every Sunday morning. Volunteers will be on hand to help children and encourage spectators to take part. Funding will go towards special equipment which will allow runners to log on to the Parkrun website to check their running times. Funds will also be used to purchase high-tech stop watches, shirts for runners and volunteers, and cones and bollards. Parkrun is a worldwide organisation which sets up and manages free weekly timed runs in parks. It is largely funded by sponsors and is run by volunteers. There are also events on Saturdays at Woodhouse Moor and Temple Newsam. Councillors hope that this free event will encourage more children and young people to take up running as a hobby, meet new friends and get active.
