Physiotherapist Alison Rose opens clinic in West Park
Dear Readers, Welcome to the new edition of North Leeds Life for LS7, LS8 and LS17! Over the last couple of years we have received numerous requests to start an edition of our magazine that would cover Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown and Roundhay and we thought this would be a good time to do it! From now on we will be looking forward to hearing all your news, and to listing your community events and meetings. We are delighted to have Jessica Ennis on our cover, who we met when she and Dame Kelly Holmes were in West Park to launch Alison Rose’s new physiotherapy clinic. In this new issue, staying with the idea of fitness, we encourage everyone to get active this year and enjoy it! We also have news of what is on at our local theatres and upcoming cultural events. Councillor Alex Sobel comments on local successes and future projects; Alwoodley Parish Council puts out a call for new parish councilors; and a local charity wins a Duke of York Award. We hope you like your new community magazine! Don’t forget to send us your news and notices for February as soon as you can – absolute deadline is 3rd January (7th Jan for advertising), you know how the holiday season tends to slow people down! Wishing all our new readers and advertisers a very Happy and Prosperous New Year! Kind regards Carole, Jack and the team

0113 274 8776 eadingley LitFest has just been awarded £7,600 by the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project in 2013/2014 based on the military hospital, which was at Beckett’s Park, Headingley, during the First World War. The City of Leeds Training College was built at Beckett’s Park not long before hostilities started and, in 1914, it was established as the 2nd Northern General Hospital. Wounded soldiers replaced trainee teachers, and the Red Cross flag was hoisted above what is today the James Graham Building, part of Leeds Metropolitan University. “The news that we have the grant is really exciting!” said Headingley LitFest Secretary Richard Wilcocks, who submitted the bid last July. “We are particularly interested in collecting personal stories. Many thousands of men and women were involved with the hospital – soldiers of all ranks, doctors, surgeons, nurses and VADs – for the whole of the Great War and for several years afterwards. “We are looking for letters, diaries and newspaper articles and we will also be trying to trace the descendants of people who were there. We intend to put out appeals in print and online to find them, hoping that they have memories and photos to share. I would guess that they are scattered everywhere, because the patients were from far and wide, but some of them must live in Yorkshire.” Support and assistance will be provided
by the Legacies of War project at the University of Leeds. All available archives will be searched – at Beckett’s Park, Leeds University, Leeds Library and Information Service, Imperial War Museum. “We are very interested in photos and the names associated with them, as they could lead to what we want”, continued Richard. “There is plenty of neglected material in archives relating to the Beckett’s Park Hospital, and we are excited by some of the things we have found already – for example, a remarkable scrapbook of photographs compiled by Sergeant George Sprittles, a patient in 1917, discovered by Keith Rowntree, the archivist at the Beckett’s Park Library; and a ‘signing-in book’ with the names of patients who give the details of their wounds and where they were fighting, together with their answers to the question ‘What would you do with Kaiser Bill?’ “The men and women we are researching went through the most terrible experiences and they should not be forgotten. We are going to share the results of our research with local residents (the various audiences which we have built up over the years) through an attractive publication that will be printed at the beginning of 2014, in time Headingley LitFest in March 2014. There will also be a dramatic production based on the publication.” Please contact headingleyhospital@hotmail.com

THEY LIVED IN LEEDS LOUIS AIMÉ AUGUSTIN LE PRINCE 1841-1890 Artist, Iventor, Film Pioneer
ON A BRIGHT DAY IN OCTOBER 1888, A SUBURBAN GARDEN IN ROUNDHAY BECAME THE SETTING FOR A PIECE OF MOVIE HISTORY. LOUIS LE PRINCE CARRIED HIS HEAVY PROTOTYPE CAMERA OUT OF HIS IN-LAWS’ HOUSE, OAKWOOD GRANGE, AND ASKED FOUR OF HIS FAMILY TO WALK ROUND THE GARDEN WHILE HE FILMED THEM. ALTHOUGH ONLY SECONDS SURVIVE, THEIR IMAGES WERE CAPTURED FOR EVER IN WHAT HAS BECOME KNOWN AS THE ROUNDHAY GARDEN SCENE, GENERALLY ACKNOWLEDGED AS THE FIRST MOVING PICTURE. LOUIS LE PRINCE WAS TO BECOME FAMOUS AS THE FATHER OF CINEMATOGRAPHY – AND AS THE MAN WHO DISAPPEARED. Louis’ connection with Leeds came about when he befriended a young Englishman in Paris – John Whitley, who like Louis had studied sciences at the University of Leipzig, and shared his fascination with current scientific and technical advances. Louis originated from Metz, northeast France, where his father was an army major, and a friend of the pioneer photographer Daguerre – photography was an early interest. John Whitley’s father, Joseph, ran a brass foundry in Hunslet, Leeds, and was an enthusiast for technical innovation and development. In 1866 Louis accompanied his friend John on a family visit to Leeds. He took a great interest in the Whitley foundry and agreed to represent the firm in Paris. He also took an interest in John’s sister Lizzie. When her father sent her to study art in Paris the following year, they met again and married in July 1869. They chose to settle in Leeds – first in Hunslet, then at Brandon Villas, Chapeltown Road. The next year was anxious and difficult, as Louis felt he had to join the volunteers defending Paris, besieged by the Prussian army. He returned to Leeds to work as a draughtsman at the Whitley foundry, but he and Lizzie dreamed of uniting their skills and training in art and science to develop and teach techniques of painting and enamelling on ceramics. In 1874 they set up their own School of China Painting, and moved to 33 Park
Square. The unique, delicate artistic work they and their pupils produced was much admired. In 1875 two of their miniature portraits were chosen for presentation to the Duke of Edinburgh when he opened the massive Yorkshire Exhibition in Leeds, and a royal commission followed. Their paintings won awards at the Paris exhibition of 1878, when several were purchased for the French national collection. And when the monumental Cleopatra’s Needle was erected in London that year, one of their royal portraits was among the medley of objects buried beneath it, entombed in a bronze capsule made at the Whitley Foundry – still there as far as
anyone knows! Alongside teaching Louis continued to experiment with new materials and techniques, focussing particularly on photography and its commercial possibilities. But money was tight and he now had six children to support. In 1882 Lizzie’s brother John persuaded the family to move to New York to join him in a new interior design business. When this failed, Lizzie took up teaching art again while Louis worked at designing and building huge panoramic displays, a popular attraction of the time. Meanwhile he worked obsessively on his photographic experiments, convinced of the feasibility of taking and projecting moving images. He was not alone: other inventors were busy working in this potentially lucrative field, and rivalry intensified to be the first to register a patent. In 1887 Louis decided to return to Leeds to work full-time on his project. With Joseph Whitley’s support he set up a workshop at 160 Woodhouse Lane, where, with a devoted team including his son Adolphe, he succeeded in developing a single-lens camera, which he tried out in the Oakwood garden and filming traffic on Leeds Bridge. He also worked on projection methods and new forms of film, and managed to obtain several patents. In 1890, just before a long-planned exhibition in New York, he went to France on business, and visited his brother in Dijon. There, on 16 September, he boarded the train back to Paris. He was never seen again. In a world without phones, no one knew he was missing for several weeks, and his distraught family in New York waited in vain for his return. No body or luggage was ever found. Was it murder, perhaps by rivals as his family thought, suicide, even a planned change of identity? The mystery remains unsolved today, fertile ground for speculation, fed by the later death of his son Adolphe in a mysterious shooting accident. Louis’ pioneering work is remembered in Leeds by two blue plaques, one in Woodhouse Lane, the other by Leeds Bridge. And that first brief film in the garden at Oakwood can still be viewed, the jerky figures imperishable now, a poignant glimpse into the past.

Nike Savvas
HAS THE RIGHT FORMULA! eeds Ar t Gallery is hosting a new, exciting exhibition featuring the work of Australian artist Nike Savvas until 24th February. ‘Liber ty and Anarchy’ features some of Nike’s latest work. Her use of mathematical formulas allows her to explore the meticulous and exciting world of art. The central installation ‘Liberty and Anarchy’ will take over the largest gallery and will involve 18 large screens which hold hundreds of individually placed, taut, brightly coloured ribbons. The installation can only be fully appreciated in person as it creates a three-dimensional moiré effect.
Her use of mathematical formulas allows her to explore the meticulous and exciting world of art In a second gallery, Savvas will premiere eight 3D wooden geometric shapes of varying sizes, previously only exhibited in Australia. The shapes, some
of which are split open whilst others remain complete, have been designed and crafted according to a meticulously worked mathematical formula. Savvas then uses wool and steel to create her own unique moiré motif on the surfaces, a design that took a year to develop. Alongside these structures, seven moiré black and white paintings use the same mathematical formula and are, in effect, painted representations of the 3D shapes. Nike Savvas will be in conversation with Patricia Ellis at Leeds Art Gallery on 12th February at 6pm. The event is free but booking is essential as places are limited. AYCKBOURN’S CHAOTIC COMEDY COMES TO ADEL!
MURDER MOST MUSICAL! THERE WILL BE MURDER AT THE HARROGATE THEATRE IN JANUARY WHEN THE PHOENIX PLAYERS, ONE OF THE LEADING AMATEUR MUSICAL GROUPS IN HARROGATE, PRESENTS THE HARROGATE PREMIERE OF KANDER AND EBB’S HILARIOUS MUSICAL MYSTERY ‘CURTAINS’. lthough less wellknown than their block-busting shows ‘Cabaret’ and ‘Chicago’, ‘Curtains’, which was nominated for eight Tony Awards, features an equally brilliant musical score, witty lyrics, larger than life characters and a plot that twists and turns. When detective, Frank Cioffi, arrives at a Boston theatre to investigate the suspicious death of the tone-deaf leading lady, he finds no shortage of suspects; everyone wanted her dead! But as the body count rises, the stagestruck sleuth seems more concerned with rescuing the show than apprehending the killer, with some very surprising results. The show runs from 24th – 26th January 2013 at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. It contains occasional bad language that may be offensive or unsuitable for young children.
Tickets are available from Harrogate Theatre on 01423 502116 or at www. harrogatetheatre.co.uk. Fifty pence from every ticket will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

ADEL PLAYERS ARE BRINGING ALAN AYCKBOURN’S CLASSIC 70’S COMEDY ‘BEDROOM FARCE’ TO NORTH LEEDS IN JANUARY. THE PRODUCTION WILL BE STAGED AT THE ADEL WAR MEMORIAL HALL, LS16 8DE, FROM WEDNESDAY 23RD – SATURDAY 26TH JANUARY AT 7.30PM. Four couples, three bedrooms... too much excitement for one night? In ‘Bedroom Farce’, Ayckbourn turns his humorous gaze onto relationships - there’s the long married and the short of patience, the young at heart and old flames too - as circumstances conspire to prevent much chance for romance in the suburbs. As the action hops between the different houses, the audience is able to share in the laughter on an entertaining evening behind closed doors. The play is the second of the 2012-13 season for Adel Players, an amateur dramatics group which was founded in 1945. Their October production of Arthur Miller’s ‘All My Sons’ was described as ‘superb’ by amateur theatre magazine Sardines, and they also received rave reviews for their 2011-12 season of plays – ‘When We Are Married’, ‘Blithe Spirit’ and ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’. Tickets for ‘Bedroom Farce’ (£7) are available from 0113 275 5585. For further information, visit www.adel-players.org.uk
Leeds Photographic Society he Leeds Photographic Society made a great start to the season, securing first place in the first West Riding Interclub competition of the season, against 11 other competing clubs.
The first meeting of the New Year, The Presidents Evening, will start at 7.30pm on Tuesday 8th January and will feature a talk by the society’s president Ray Hattrell, illustrated, of course, by a selection of Ray’s images. Gail McIntyre in rehearsals
BLAME THE BABUSHKAS! REMEMBER THE BABUSHKAS AT EUROVISION 2012? BELIEVE IT OR NOT THEY WERE THE INSPIRATION FOR MIKE KENNY’S ‘SLEEPING BEAUTY’, WHICH IS CURRENTLY SHOWING AT WEST YORKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE! Mike specialises in writing for families and the very young and this Christmas has shows playing in Leeds, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Nottingham, Keswick, Dundee, London, Toronto, Greece, Germany, France and the USA! He and Gail McIntyre (who directs Sleeping Beauty) worked in theatre education together when The Playhouse was still based at Leeds University. His first play for this age group, ‘The Lost Child’, was staged at The Crucible in Sheffield 22 years ago. “It was a revelation”, said Mike. “Little kids are a brilliant audience. You know when you’ve captured them or when they are bored. There are no limits as to where you can go – their imagination is so fertile.” This is Mike and Gail’s seventh collaboration at The Playhouse. Each time it’s a bit like a big merry band getting back together! This year composer Oliver Birch and designer Barney George are part of the team again and actor Simon Kerrigan returns. Mike’s approach involves more storytelling than panto or Disney. It is more theatrical and grittier. Although
he targets the younger audience, adults can also relate to it. He takes a familiar fairytale and gives it a good shake up and a twist. That’s where the Babushkas come in. They are a group of good fairies, or Nannas, but one is not so good, especially when it comes to anger management, and casts a spell on Briar Rose that she sadly regrets.
In a fabulous show that covers 115 years, there are princes and princesses, kings and queens, a few frogs and lots of magic. It is truly funny, even though Briar Rose spends a whole chunk of the show as a baby and another whole chunk asleep! The Nannas are left holding the baby, so to speak, and if you are not careful you might be too! Sleeping Beauty is in the Courtyard Theatre and takes place virtually in-the-round, so the audience could find itself inadvertently drawn into the show. Tickets for Sleeping Beauty are available from 0113 213 7700 or www.wyp. org.uk

IAN BROWN IS BACK IN TOWN!
LAST JUNE LEEDS BID FAREWELL TO IAN, WHO HAD BEEN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF WEST YORKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE FOR TEN YEARS. DURING THIS TIME HE DIRECTED AND BROUGHT SOME FABULOUS PLAYS, ACTORS AND DIRECTORS TO LEEDS. HIS DEPARTURE WAS SOFTENED BY THE PROMISE OF A RETURN IN DECEMBER TO DIRECT ‘THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS’, WHICH HE ALSO DIRECTED TEN YEARS AGO AT THE PLAYHOUSE.
e caught up with him and wondered how he was managing not to slip back into his previous role and start bossing people about! But that wasn’t really his style. “It’s so nice to come back”, he told us, “and to present ‘Wind in the Willows’ again. I’m working with a very talented group of actors and musicians and it’s lots of fun. This is a brand new production with a totally different look to it. I’ve worked with Colin Richmond (the designer) quite a lot and his designs are sharp and edgy – I’m sure kids will really respond to it.” It was Alan Bennett who adapted ‘The Wind in the Willows’ for the stage. Very fond of it as a story, he’s added his own quirky little touches. “Alan Bennett made Toad very funny”, continued Ian.
“He also added a depressed horse – a new character, or rather one that didn’t speak before. There’s a touch of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh about him, which offers a nice counterpoint. Wind in the Willows is tender, funny, sad, joyous. It’s not just for kids and that is one of the joys of it.” Since leaving The Playhouse, Ian has moved to London and has been busy setting himself up as a freelance director. This Spring he is tackling a new play by Michael Kingsbury called ‘Contact UK’, a comedy drama about internet dating. The play will be staged in London, followed by a short tour. Hopefully more opportunities will arise back here in Leeds so he can come back and throw his weight around again! The Wind in the Willows is at West Yorkshire Playhouse until 19th January, ticket details from 0113 213 7700 or www.wyp.org.uk
“It’s Better than the Play!” When I caught up with Ronald Samm, who sings the title role in Opera North’s Otello, my first question was “Why should I go and see it?” I have to admit I’m not a great opera fan (having sat through Benjamin Britten’s ‘Death in Venice’ many years ago could be responsible for that!), so I would really need a little coaxing. Mind you, I am partial to a bit of Verdi. Well, Ron soon had me wrapped around his little finger. “Don’t tell anyone I said this, but it’s much better than the play!” he told me (you’re all friends, so it’s OK to tell you!). “It’s full of drama, you are plunged right into the heart of the story. Otello and Desdemona are just married, and by the next night she’s dead. It is so intense, a real roller coaster ride. Verdi was in his eighties when he wrote Otello, his second to last opera, and I believe these last two are his best. “This will be the third time I’ve sung the role and no two have been the same – one was a promenade production set during the Iraq war and this one is a
8
Join our
20th century setting (I can’t give away any more!). I can say the set design by Leslie Travers is fantastic, very exciting, with lots of movement – that’s all I’m saying! There are huge choruses too. “When I was young and first heard this music I thought ‘That is glorious’. It moves you. I wondered if I would ever get a chance to sing it. Now I thank my lucky stars every day!” Ronald almost considers Leeds his second home – having appeared in ‘The Magic Flute’, ‘House of the Dead’ and ‘Carnival Messiah’ he has numerous friends and always looks forward to singing here. With a strong reputation for serious, intense roles, he would now quite fancy trying his hand at comedy – oh, I didn’t tell you that, by the way! Opera North’s ‘Otello’ is at Leeds Grand Theatre in January and February. For full details visit www.leedsgrandtheatre.com or call the box office on 0844 848 2700

News From Your Councillor COUNCILLOR ALEX SOBEL Moortown Ward
Looking Forward to 2013 I am absolutely delighted to be writing in the first edition of North Leeds Life for North East Leeds on behalf of the Councillors representing this part of the City.
Twenty Twelve has been an eventful year for the nation with the Jubilee and the Olympics which were both celebrated by local communities – especially the Olympics where we had such local success. We have also seen a number of local projects completed such as the installation of the Captain Oates Memorial at Meanwood Park, the tiled wall on Chapeltown Rd and the completion of a new playground at Roundhay Park. Next year presents us with a new set of opportunities and challenges. We are already planning an extension to existing 20MPH zones to improve road safety as well as improving road surfaces across North Leeds, which we know are a high priority locally. We are very proud of our parks and further improvements including new tree planting, benches and signage have been secured and will be installed in the new year.
Councillors are also involved in a number of larger projects such as working with local traders to restore the Oakwood Clock and working with the local community to secure the Yorkshire Bank Playing Fields in Moortown as an area of community use. On a more troubling note, the last few years have been hard on many families. The Council budget has been cut by £145 million in the last two years and a further cut will be announced shortly. In April significant changes will come into force regarding benefits (especially of those who work), making life even more difficult for families struggling to get by. As local councillors we are here to help and the Council has a dedicated team to assist you. So, if you are facing difficulty please do get in touch with your local councillor. COMMUNITY NEWS
ALWOODLEY PARISH COUNCIL SEEKS NEW MEMBERS ALWOODLEY PARISH COUNCIL IS CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR TWO NEW MEMBERS. THE NEW MEMBERS WILL BE CHOSEN BY BALLOT BY THE NINE EXISTING MEMBERS AND WILL SERVE UNTIL THE NEXT ELECTION IN 2015. ANYONE OVER THE AGE OF 18, WHO LIVES IN THE COUNCIL’S AREA (WHICH COVERS THE AREA WEST OF HARROGATE ROAD, NORTH OF NURSERY LANE AND INCLUDES THE BUCKSTONES ESTATE AND ECCUP), OR NEARBY, AND IS QUALIFIED, CAN PUT THEIR NAME FORWARD. The work of a parish councillor is unpaid. The full council meets about ten times a year, usually on the first Monday of the month. However, the existing councillors are looking for people who can contribute to the council’s work outside the formal meetings too. Although the Council’s powers are limited, it has the right to be consulted on all planning applications in its area, and can award grants to local worthy causes. It raises its money through an extra council tax on residents in the area. This year Alwoodley Parish Council has refurbished the King Lane playground, installed picnic tables, created a Jubilee flowerbed, and organised a Jubilee Fun
Day, as well as supporting local community groups. It is now in the process of planting trees along King Lane and creating an allotment site for Alwoodley residents. If you would like to be considered as a
councillor, please contact the Clerk at the. clerk@alwoodleyparishcouncil.org or write to The Clerk, Alwoodley Parish Council, The Community Hall, 60 The Avenue, Leeds LS17 7NZ.
TOP CLEANING TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS THE NEW YEAR IS UPON US, WHICH MEANS NEW RESOLUTIONS AND DUSTING AWAY THOSE BAD HABITS. WHETHER YOU HAVE FAMILY COMING TO VISIT OR JUST WANT TO RELAX AFTER A HECTIC CHRISTMAS, YOU ALWAYS WANT YOUR HOME TO LOOK ITS BEST!
Keeping your house clean need not use up all your energy. Today many people are seeking help around the home so they are free to spend more quality time with their family doing the things they enjoy. Here are five top tips from Rachel Williams, Molly Maid franchise owner for North Leeds and Wetherby, to help you get through, and perhaps even complete your annual Spring clean. 1. To remove finger prints from stainless steel appliances, add a small amount of baby oil to a clean, soft microfibre cloth and wipe the surface in the direction of the grain. 2. To clean the inside of your microwave fill a bowl with water and microwave on high for a few minutes until boiling. The steam will loosen any baked on food so you can easily wipe it clean. 3. To unclog shower heads, remove and soak the head in boiling water and vinegar. 4. A damp cloth or rubber glove is great for removing pet hair from the upholstery or the furniture.
5. Dish cloths and sponges can be incubators for germs. Wash dish cloths regularly, and microwave damp sponges in the microwave on high for several minutes to kill bacteria.
Alternatively you can always call on Molly Maid, the domestic cleaning experts. For further information, contact Rachel for a free estimate on 0800 840 0343, rachel-williams@mollymaid.co.uk or visit www.mollymaid.co.uk

GARDEN ROUND UP
HOPEFULLY THE WEATHER WILL BE KIND AND THERE ARE SOME DAYS WHEN WE CAN SPEND AN HOUR OR TWO IN THE GARDEN. TAKE A WALK AROUND BUT, IF THERE IS FROST AND SNOW, KEEP OFF GRASSY AREAS. WHERE POSSIBLE, PICK A STEM OR TWO OF SWEET SMELLING SHRUBS FOR THE HOUSE, LOOK OUT FOR THE FIRST SNOWDROPS PLUS THE BUDS OF HELLIBORES AND ACONITES. If the ground is frozen but not snow covered, and you’re not able to keep on top of the weeds, you can spread well-rotted manure and compost as another way of suppressing weeds. Brush snow off small trees and shrubs to stop damage and breaking branches. If the weather is just too cold or wet to venture out, this is a good time to start planning for the rest of the year. It’s not too soon to start sowing early crops but these do need some heat, start to chit early potatoes even if you are only growing in large pots or tubs. Check any pots of forced bulbs for growth and bring them into the light if you haven’t already done so. Visit garden centres and pick up plants that may have caught your eye during the year. Do check the growth height and spread before buying to ensure that they will fit in the area you have in mind. If you fancy dogwoods, perhaps you have friends who grow them and are willing to give you a few stems when they cut them back. Take a stem about twelve inches long, trim off the soft growing tip and snip the base to just below a bud, dip in hormone rooting powder and place in a slit trench made by inserting the spade into the soil working it backwards and forwards. If the soil is heavy or clay based, line the trench with fine sand, plant about six inches apart and two thirds down, fill in. You can also plant it in pots, if you prefer. Come Autumn they will have rooted and be ready to
plant wherever you want them for both colour and structure. Friends and neighbours are a good source for new plants for your garden, and a great chance to swap some of yours. If you are new to gardening they can be a great source of advice too. I wish you all a very Happy New Year and a fruitful gardening year!

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON Many birds from Scandinavia and northern Europe escape to Britain and Ireland in Winter to enjoy the normally milder conditions. Some, such as fieldfare, arrive regularly, others such as waxwings erratically. This is another waxwing winter, with large numbers already recorded in eastern England, spreading further inland. Thus several flocks have been seen in and near Leeds, including one of 200 in Woodhouse Square. Waxwings resemble starlings in size and flight silhouette. Exotic looking and very tame, they are plump with a thick neck. They are pinkish-buff with a prominent crest on the crown, black eye mark and bib, yellow tail and waxy red spot on the wings. These invasions seem to be triggered by prospective food shortages. In summer they eat insects, and berries in winter. Poor fruit crops in their homeland send them abroad in search of rowan,
hawthorn and cotoneaster berries in particular. As a result, they will visit parks and gardens large and small in town or countryside. Because cotoneasters are a favourite landscaping plant
for supermarkets and petrol stations, they are frequently seen there. Voracious eaters, they will strip trees quickly and then move on in search of fresh supplies.

KEEPING ROUNDHAY PARK LOOKING ITS BEST FRIENDS OF ROUNDHAY PARK CONTINUE TO MEET ON TWO MORNINGS EACH MONTH. n November they planted 10,000 daffodil bulbs, with the help of children from Kerr Mackie Primary School. Thanks to bulb planting by the Friends over the last three years, there will now be daffodils stretching from the bottom of the Upper Lake, down the hill to Waterloo Lake, along the footpath to the Lakeside Café and then up Carriage Drive past Barran’s Fountain and back to the Upper Lake. Primulas and ferns were also planted, so Spring promises to be very colourful as a result! “It’s a great way of getting fresh air and exercise in the company of interesting and friendly people – as well as improving the Park and keeping it looking good”, said Jon Vogler, who leads Friends of Roundhay Park working parties.
With the help of local canoeists, the Friends have also cleared debris from the lakes, as well as weeding, clearing drainage gulleys and removing litter and other debris from various parts of the Park. Clearing laurel and small self seeded sycamores, to make way for new specimen trees in the ravine, is also on their task list and is part of a major project to restore this area of the Park, which was an arboretum in Victorian times, to its former glory. If you would like to be involved, meet at 10am in the Mansion Car Park on the second Saturday or fourth Thursday of each month. Tools, protective clothing, tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, but you need to wear suitable clothing and stout footwear. If you would like more information, contact David Binns on 0113 293 2893 or news@forp.co.uk

SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS DIRECTED BY: Martin McDonagh
STARRING: Sam Rockwell, Colin Farrell, Woody
Harrelson, Christopher Walken, Tom Waits
CERT: 15
RUNNING TIME: 110mins I caught this one at the recent (and excellent) Leeds International Film Festival. I had a feeling I was in for a treat when I noted that Seven Psychopaths is the new film written and directed by Martin McDonagh, who gave us the brilliant ‘In Bruges’.
Satisfaction was further guaranteed by the cast, which included Tom Waits and Christopher Walken. The appearance of one of these legends in a film is enough to lift it to greatness, but BOTH? Well, it’s like, “you had me at ‘hello’”.
Seven Psychopaths also reunites McDonagh with Colin Farrell, from whom he coaxed such a winning performance in ‘In Bruges’. Here, Farrell plays Marty, an alcoholic Irish screenwriter living in LA who’s struggling with his latest script, called ‘Seven Psychopaths’. Marty sceptically receives an offer of help from his slacker friend Billy (the underrated Sam Rockwell), who seems a little unhinged himself. Billy runs a scam with his accomplice Hans (Walken), which involves abducting dogs then returning them to their owners for cash rewards.
Satisfaction was guaranteed by the cast, which included Tom Waits and Christopher Walken
DELIVERING MORE DOOR TO DOOR
As a soused Marty casts about for inspiration for his movie psychos, Billy lands in a pickle when he and Hans inadvertently dognap the beloved Shih Tzu of violent, deranged local crime boss Charlie (Woody Harrelson). As with his previous film, McDonagh here offers up another spirited, blackly comic crime caper, aided by a fantastic ensemble cast. The caustic one liners and sublime comedy moments are evenly distributed and pretty much everyone is hilarious – Walken, in particular, is superb. With an amusing post modern twist, as Marty’s screenplay evolves, we find ourselves watching the movie being written which leads to a crescendo of laughter as we see Billy’s deliriously over the top scenarios played out. McDonagh again has plenty of fun riffing on genre clichés and performing a deft balancing act between the light and breezy and the dark and grizzly, the madcap and the poignant.

ALBUM LAUNCH DAN BEESLEY & THE S.S.S.S.S. Get Romantic
DAN BEESLEY HAS LONG BEEN ONE OF THE LEADING LIGHTS OF LEEDS’ FERTILE (AND MORE THAN A LITTLE INCESTUOUS) FOLK BLUES/ AMERICANA SCENE, A ROSTER OF MADDENINGLY TALENTED PLAYERS WHO FLIT BETWEEN SEVERAL COMBOS AND GIG COMPULSIVELY AROUND THE CITY’S BARS AND CLUBS. WITH THE S.S.S.S.S., BEESLEY HAS ASSEMBLED A FORMIDABLE BACKING GROUP OF SOME OF THE TOWN’S FINEST MUSICIANS WHO, CONSIDERING THE NUMEROUS SIDE PROJECTS EACH MEMBER IS INVOLVED IN, CAN LAY CREDIBLE CLAIM TO BEING ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING BANDS AROUND.
The release of this superb album was celebrated with a barnstorming gig at Sela, which saw the band on cracking form. Having seen members of the S.S.S.S.S. play with other combos in the past, I knew to expect something special but I was absolutely floored by a faultlessly performed set of blistering, vigorous Blues-infused Rock ‘n’ Roll par excellence. Get Romantic’s succinct nine tracks, all Beesley-penned originals with the exception of Mailtrain, a reworking of Bob Dylan’s It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry, have the down home feel of forgotten blues classics
and both Beesley’s vocals and stunning guitar work convey a sense of raw honesty with an authentic grittiness. The record captures perfectly the energy the band generates live. The crisp, clear as a bell instrumentation framing the vintage feel and making a set of songs marinated in retro influences sound fresh and immediate. Album opener Fortune & Love put me in mind of Dylan’s recent output, a rollicking blues number given a tasty Country twang by the lashings of slide guitar. Rumbling baritone sax enhances the sleazy barroom groove of Place Your Life, which breaks into a foot-stomping, stabbing chorus. The aforementioned Mailtrain features the never less than outstanding work of the city’s go-to fiddle player and gigging machine Kieran O’Malley. The age old, well worn blues themes of booze and women are present and correct here, but with songs like the great Cheatin’ n Lyin’ Blues, built around an archetypal blues riff, and the pared down Whiskey No More, they’re delivered with such verisimilitude and gusto that nothing ever feels hackneyed or clichéd. A personal album highlight is the brilliant Don’t Run, which showcases the solid work of the rhythm section and whose call and response chorus echoes its catchy guitar hook. Both on record and onstage Beesley projects an easy charm, a truthful voice with surprising range and unfussy, down-to-business fretwork. Given the fact that he’s one of our city’s finest blues guitarists (to say nothing of the estimable abilities of his backing group) the set is refreshingly free of showboating or indulgent noodling. Dan Beesley & The S.S.S.S.S. are a fantastic live act who have produced an excellent album. I highly recommend you avail yourself of a copy of Get Romantic forthwith and prepare to be dazzled by this exemplary bluesman of the Aire Delta.

Get Fit and Enjoy it! ith the New Year comes the inevitable vow to get fit, lose weight and start caring about our health. Expensive gym memberships are bought and by March, they’re a distant memory. ‘I’ll go tomorrow’ turns into next week and so on, until all healthy intentions have become drowned in a world of ‘too busy.’ So how do we break the cycle?
By Muireann Carey-Campbell www.spikesandheels. com
Change Your Approach All too often the motivation behind exercise is losing weight. Let’s be realistic; we have a growing obesity problem in this country, so this definitely needs to be a concern, but when that’s the only focus, it’s easy to get distracted if you don’t see immediate results. The real problem we’re facing at the moment is inactivity. If you start thinking about building exercise into your lifestyle, so it’s fun, rather than it being a punishment and a chore, the natural benefits will just occur and in the end, you’ll be happier.
Set Realistic Goals Signing up to a gym and vowing to go three times a week when you previously haven’t been that active at all, is simply setting yourself up to fail. Maybe plan to go once or twice a week and build your fitness through other healthy choices the remainder of the time – be it getting off the bus a few stops early and walking the rest of the way or
cycling to work one day a week. If you’re looking to make changes to your body, understand that it takes time so be patient. Small changes add up to a big difference.
Redefine ‘Active’ Exercise doesn’t always mean two-hour gym sessions or running marathons. At the beginning of your fitness journey, walking the dog may be the starting point, and that should absolutely be classed as being active. Going for a walk at lunchtime rather than sitting at your desk, having a kick about with your kids in the park – all this movement counts. As we’ve become so sedentary as a nation, our main goal should quite simply involve just getting off our collective behinds! Get your heart rate up and a little sweaty, whether it’s a brisk walk or playing Frisbee, it all benefits you.
Hang Up Your Excuses With all the different ways we can work out now, we are really running
out of excuses not to be active. Can’t afford a gym membership? No time to get to a gym? No problem! There are all sorts of apps you can download straight onto your phone now that will give you a workout just as good as a class. You can choose workouts that take as little as 15 minutes and who can’t spare that kind of time?!

New Year New You!!
The key is in finding an activity you enjoy doing. Focus on the feeling it gives you, the sense of accomplishment and the endorphin rush after each session. Clearly exercise benefits your physical health, but the other effects start to spill out into every area of your life. You’ll be focused, driven, happier and less stressed. Plus, if you find some friends to do it with, it’s a wonderful reason to be social. So this year, let’s stick to the resolutions, enjoy being active and push forward with the knowledge that quite literally, every little step gets us closer to where we want to be.

Be Inspired, Get Involved
hilst London 2012 is still fresh in everyone’s mind, Greg Mulholland MP, West Yorkshire Sport, Leeds City Council and the Sport and Recreation Alliance decided to channel that enthusiasm and build on the legacy left by the Games to encourage people to get active. Whether it’s taking up a sport or volunteering to help teams or clubs – whatever the reason, ‘Be Inspired, Get Involved’ is designed to help people find an activity to suit them. “I am very excited about the launch of ‘Be Inspired, Get Involved”, said Greg Mulholland. “I believe it is so important to do something positive with the Olympic and Paralympic legacy before it slips away, and showing communities how they can capitalise on that legacy is a great way forward.” “The launch at Lawnswood School included special sporting guests as well as sports clubs and teams from all around north-west Leeds. This was just the first event of many. We are determined to go all out and
try to get people really engaged in how they can be a part of keeping London 2012 spirit alive.” The initiative centres around community sports fairs, where local clubs, coaches, leisure centres and other associations get together to show people the range of sporting and recreational activities available – from football to fencing, athletics to aikido, yachting to yoga. “It will showcase the opportunities available locally and offered by sports clubs, the council and other legacy programmes”, added Nigel Harrison, Chief Executive of West Yorkshire Sport. “We are determined that more people playing sport will be a genuine legacy of 2012.” Sports fairs have already been held at Lawnswood School and St Mary’s, Menston and more are planned for the New Year. Exclusive and Specialist weight loss programme Are you keen on losing weight permanently? Do you want to be fit and healthy for life? Do you want to be able to wear anything you want and feel confident? Do you need help managing weight related medical problems? Have you lost weight with dieting and put it back?
If you answered YES to any of the above questions, you need to read this… Why do all my diets fail?
Most diet plans fail in the long term. This is because your body learns to conserve energy with significant calorie restriction. Most diets are low in calories or they may place emphasis on a certain food type. For example, it may be a low carbohydrate or high protein diet. Some fad diets which are not evidence based can be harmful to your body. Most diets are based on the concept of reducing total calorie intake and suppressing your appetite to make you feel full. This approach may not be suitable for you and even if you are successful, you may not be able to maintain your weight loss. Some diets can be so dangerous that they could irreversibly damage your health.
One size does NOT fit all!
Each one of us has a different physical, psychological, genetic and hormonal make up. We think differently, feel different, have different metabolic rates and have different hunger patterns. This is why we do not benefit from diet plans and weight loss programs. They are not designed for your body. A plan which helps someone to lose weight may not always be beneficial; even if it does help, it is not for long.
So what’s the solution?
A weight loss programme should be personalised to your emotional, social, hormonal and psychological needs. It’s important to remember that weight loss is only one factor in your journey to gaining health. You also need to be happy, confident, successful and have a high self esteem. With weight loss your medical problems associated with body weight should improve. Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, poor mobility and infertility should get better and in some cases be completed resolved.
Why are we different?
We are a specialist team of Consultant Physicians, Specialist Dietitians, Bariatric Surgeons, Clinical Psychologists, Obesity Physiotherapists, Expert Patients and Fitness Experts. We provide comprehensive care with the aim of helping you lose weight and maintain it for life without surgery. We thoroughly analyse your medical and psychological state before providing you a personalised programme with long term support. EVANGELICAL ABOUT PILATES
Leeds Pilates Place was founded by two local mums who have taught Pilates across Leeds since 2004 and built up a loyal following. Kath Nisbet & Claire Sparrow are both passionate, bordering on the evangelical, about the endless benefits of Pilates and the importance of highly qualified teachers.
“Our motto is ‘access for all’, meaning we will accept anyone whatever your health, age or fitness level”, says Kath. “Most of our clients have been with us from the very start and have made enormous improvements in their health & physique. Our clients stay with us because they get such great quality!”
“Pilates is not just for the ‘six pack’ seekers; It plays a huge role in rehab, injury prevention and postural improvement. We teach all ages from pregnant mums and babies to marathon runners, through to granddads. Our oldest Granny is 85 and can effortlessly touch her toes” adds Claire. Located in a beautiful converted church, Leeds Pilates Place studio is light, spacious and has a friendly, warm atmosphere. Kath, Claire and their experienced team don’t teach Pilates as you may know it, they teach specialised machine-based Pilates which is so beneficial you will feel an instant improvement; such as feeling longer, lighter and more coordinated. If you’re wondering if Pilates is for you, or if you’ve tried it before but not had a great experience then give them a call. Every reader who quotes ‘I’m up for it’ will receive 50% off their first three sessions (terms and conditions apply); offer lasts till Easter 2013.

THE WOMAN BEHIND JESSICA ENNIS
BEHIND EVERY GREAT ATHLETE IS A TRUSTED PHYSIO
Graeme Everard, Kelly Holmes, Alison Rose and Jessica Ennis. Photo: Joe Stenson
IN SPORT, WE TEND TO HEAR ABOUT PHYSIOTHERAPISTS WHEN ATHLETES ARE INJURED – VITAL AS THEIR INPUT IS THEN, THEIR REAL ROLE IS ACTUALLY ENSURING THAT THEIR ATHLETES REMAIN INJURY FREE. THEY ARE THE ‘MECHANICS’ BEHIND THE SCENES! LITTLE DID WE REALISE IT, BUT WE HAVE A ‘HOT’ TEAM OF PHYSIOS RIGHT HERE IN LEEDS WHO HAVE COME INTO THEIR OWN OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS. lison Rose set up her practice at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2003 and since then Jessica Ennis, Dame Kelly Holmes, Alistair and Jonny Brownlee and world squash number one James Willstrop have all passed through her hands. Ten years on, having outgrown facilities at Leeds Met, and with a team of ten physios, three soft tissue therapists and a consultant podiatrist, she and business partner and fellow physio Graeme
Everard have opened their new Coach House Sports Physiotherapy Clinic in West Park. Needless to say, Jessica and Kelly were among the guests celebrating its launch in November. A marathon runner herself (having represented the GB Team at the 1994 European Athletics Championships, 1995 World Athletics Championships and 1995 World Marathon Cup), Alison understands the world of athletics inside out. Having qualified in physiotherapy in Edinburgh, and worked in Australia and Ireland,
Alison was approached by Malcolm Brown, (high performance coach with UK Athletics and British Triathlon, and Director of Sport at Leeds Met, who coaches the Brownlee brothers), to set up at the university. She hasn’t looked back. Since she came to Leeds, Alison has worked with top athletes and taken in three Olympic Games. She still works with Kelly supporting developing athletes through Kelly’s ‘On Camp With Kelly’ Scheme, that now has about 45 up and coming young athletes. She also works with the City of Leeds Divers who are doing so well. Certainly, since talking to Alison, how I perceive physiotherapy has completely changed. I saw it as a possible solution to a problem, not necessarily a preventive measure. Alison is working with young athletes who may have growth related issues – it makes sense to address these when they are young. If they have flexibility, strength or biomechanical issues these can be ironed out when young, with the right exercises, so they grow and develop into adults more physically healthy, remain healthy and enjoy their sport. Identifying problems early is so important. You’d be amazed at the range of problems where physiotherapy can help – from skeletal and muscular to visceral and performance improvement. And, of course, you don’t have to be a top athlete to benefit – Alison’s oldest client is in her 90s! She would like to suggest an MOT for everyone! “We spend a lot of money keeping our cars on the road – we should treat our bodies with as much care”, she told me. “We would all be happier, do our jobs better and stay active and healthy a lot longer.” CSPC is at The Coach House, 184 Otley Road, West Park, LS16 5LW Tel: 0113 275 0606, info@cspc.co.uk, www.cspc.co.uk

OLYMPIC BOXING HOPES FOR ALLERTON GRANGE STUDENT
Years of hard work have paid off for Allerton Grange Student Izram Chaudry, who recently won the Amateur Boxing Association Junior Novice Championships Final (Yorkshire). Izram (16), from Harehills, achieved the under 46 kilos title by intensive training over the past seven years, which included training twice a day, six days a week. Working at the Karmand Centre Boxing Club in Bradford and Virgin Active in Leeds, Izram’s weekly schedule included 26 miles running, intensive swimming, strength and conditioning the body, and a high intensity fitness plan, as well as watching his diet to maintain the correct body weight. “I will be training alongside Team GB at Bradford Sports College next year and will be aiming and training for the 2020 Olympics”, Izram told us. “I would love to be ready for the 2016 games but this would be too soon due to the enormous amount of training that would be required.” The school will be monitoring his progression to the Olympics over the coming years.
PARENTS CONTINUE TO CAMPAIGN FOR NORTH’S FIRST STATE-FUNDED STEINER SCHOOL
Aissa Gallie (left), with other members of the application team and children nspired by the success of state-funded Steiner schools in the south, plans to establish the north’s first mainstream Steiner school in Leeds have been submitted to the Department of Education under the Government’s Free Schools scheme. Leeds Steiner School would provide the equivalent of primary and secondary education for around 600 mixed ability pupils aged four to 16 and would be linked to the international Steiner Waldorf movement, which aims to teach a ‘holistic curriculum’ in an unhurried and creative learning environment. The Steiner system is one of the most consistently successful international educational systems. Established almost a century ago, Steiner education enjoys state funding in most European countries. The curriculum is broad and balanced, integrating art and science, practical activity and theory to support the academic, emotional, physical and spiritual needs of children. “We feel strongly that the north of England deserves mainstream Steiner education as a fair choice for parents
in our region”, said Aissa Gallie of the Leeds Steiner School (LSS) working group. “The only Government funded Steiner academies are in the south, while all Steiner provision in the north past the age of five is private. Parents in Leeds who can’t afford private education are looking for choice and the Free Schools scheme offers us the best chance of getting it.” Currently, the only early years Steiner education available in Leeds is at Beechtree Kindergarten. “The proposed Leeds Steiner School will welcome children of all faiths and backgrounds”, said Helen Pearson, Chair of Trustees at Beechtree. “Steiner education is based on a clear understanding of how children develop, rigorously applied so that learning opportunities are provided when children are ready for them.” Residents, MPs, nearby schools, community and faith groups have all shown support for the bid, while over 500 people signed a petition backing the previous application in May. LEANNA WINS A KINDLE FOR HER ‘MAGIC STORIES’ DESIGN
AMARA IS A WINNER!
LEANNA COHEN (7), WHOSE TWIN OBSESSIONS ARE READING AND DRAWING, HAS WON THE TOP PRIZE IN A COMPETITION RUN BY THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL AT LEEDS (GSAL) AT THE ILKLEY LITERATURE FESTIVAL.
Leanna with Principal of GSAL, Mike Gibbons
n Year 3 at Brodetsky Primary School, Leanna won an Amazon Kindle for designing the cover for a book that she called ‘Magic Stories’. “I made up the book because I love books about fairies and magic”, said Leanna. “I read all day and at bedtime I read to my little sister and make up stories too. I’m excited about the Kindle because I can read it anywhere.” GSAL was the main sponsor of
the Children’s Festival at Ilkley and children who visited the Children’s Weekend in October were invited to enter the competition by designing a book cover for either their favourite book or a story of their own invention. Two runners up each received a book token. They were Jojo Lyons (8) from All Saints Primary in Ilkley, with her spooky entry ‘The Haunted House’, and Rebecca Rose (9), Embsay Primary School, who designed a brilliant ‘Bad Girls’ cover.
Amara Okereke from Adel was a recent winner in the Festival4Stars 2012 national competition (15 and over musical theatre singing category). She joined 16 other finalists having won regional heats and finals earlier in the year. A year 11 student at the Grammar School at Leeds, Amara had her first experience of musical theatre when she took part in national auditions for the Youth Music Theatre in 2011. She went on to play a leading role in their production of the musical ‘Out There’, written by James Bourne and Elliott Davis, who also wrote ‘Loserville’, which had its premiere at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. She was also selected for a lead a role in ‘13’, a musical produced by the National Youth Music Theatre, directed by its American writer, Jason Robert Brown and performed at London’s Apollo Theatre. Before following her dream of a career on the stage, Amara plans to study psychology at university. She attended dance classes at Headingley Dance Centre from the age of five, receives classical singing training from Sue Lees, retired Opera North singer, and musical theatre training from Helen Leaf in Wetherby.
