Dear Readers,

Where has this year gone?! Time is going by way too quickly.

But don’t let that put you off taking advantage of all that Leeds has to offer in the run up to Christmas. There are great musicals on at both The Grand and West Yorkshire Playhouse; superb shows for children at the Playhouse; and another fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto (Dick Whittington) at City Varieties. Plus, there are all kinds of festive events and music performances for you to enjoy. There’s a new music festival – High and Lonesome – celebrating the influence of Americana. Once again, we’d like to point you in the direction of the markets. Not only will you find all kinds of fresh produce, gift ideas, and a

great atmosphere, but most markets also feature seasonal entertainment. Our local political representatives remind us to ensure we are all on the electoral register – with recent changes you may need to check this. Residents on Grove Lane, Headingley, are concerned about speeding traffic; Beck Art Trail is happening again; and Leeds City Academy (City of Leeds School) is wearing its new identity very well. Now it’s time to look to the New Year! Send us your news and events for January as soon as you can (before the end of November if possible!). The deadline for advertising is 1st December. In the meantime, we wish you a wonderful Christmas and Festive Season.

Kind regards, Carole, Jack and the team.

WASHINGTON TEASDALE (1830-1903)

CIVIL ENGINEER, PIONEERING PHOTOGRAPHER AND ASTRONOMER In the great Victorian age of scientific discovery, innovation and exploration, Leeds did not lag behind. New societies were formed to bring local people together to discuss, research and experiment with the new ideas and technologies of the time. Prominent in this bubbling cauldron of ideas and activities was an engineer and amateur scientist, Washington Teasdale. After years working in India he returned to his home town of Leeds in the 1870s and threw himself enthusiastically into the rich life of the town, joining all the forward-thinking groups and playing his part in local initiatives and research, particularly in photography, microscopy, and astronomy. e was born in Brunswick Place,

is about to celebrate its third Christmas in The Light Centre. It was originally set up in to provide work and retail space for designers and craftspeople who couldn’t afford the time or money to set up on their own. They soon found themselves running a huge range of classes – including sewing, printmaking, millinery, knitting, crochet, felt making, leatherwork and jewellery. Fabrication’s aim is to enable people to develop skills and be self- sufficient. They have worked in the adult social care field running weekly classes for adults with learning difficulties, and with refugee organisations, MenCap and Leeds Mind. They also work with organisations like TUC Yorkshire and various corporations. “Recent development in the city has removed the remaining affordable retail spaces leaving most independents to exist on the edges of the city or in less frequented areas”, said Dawn Wood, Fabrication’s CEO. “Our sellers work in the shop, as one of our remits is to stop social isolation. It also means that they can see reaction to their work, learn how to run their business and network with

I’m one of the ‘sanctuary knitters’ and we meet up every Wednesday to knit the horses. We also have ‘remote

We wanted to include products like food, furniture and specialist skills. We now have a blacksmith, leatherwork, glass and ceramics, as well as art, clothing, body products, lighting and jewellery. We’ve even a bridal department specialising in vintage, alternative and historic weddings. Fabrication, The Light, The Headrow, Leeds. Tel: 0113 243 910, www.fabric-ation. co.uk

Thirteen years have flown by since Tony Lynch opened Rainbow Windows, on Butcher Hill, West Park, and he still hasn’t lost his enthusiasm for the business. here’s no shortage of window companies around Leeds, so what’s special about Rainbow? Frankly it’s probably Tony’s enthusiasm and dedication to the job. With over 22 years experience in the industry, there isn’t much he doesn’t know about windows. What’s more – North Leeds is his patch. He has lived and worked here for years. He’s familiar with all the different styles of homes and knows precisely what will and won’t work. Today he employs 18 people, including three fulltime, skilled fitting teams (all of whom have been with him for years) and who are constantly working around the area. They know the exacting standards Tony works to and ensure that each job meets them – whether this is for just one window or an entire conservatory from start to finish. But, perhaps most of all, it comes down to customer service. “I love going out and meeting new customers”, he told us. “It’s all about delivering a job that they will be delighted with. So I sit down with them and we go over their budget, what they want to achieve, the style they have in mind and we come up with a solution to suit all of those things.” It certainly seems to work, as 70% of Rainbow’s jobs come through recommendations from happy customers! Another of Tony’s mantras is never to compromise on quality.

We have built our reputation on quality products and quality installation

“You can’t ever compromise on quality”, he said. “We have built our reputation on quality products and quality installation and it has stood us in good stead. As soon as new products come on the market we assess them to see how they can improve on our current offering. We recently upgraded all our locking systems and have opted for composite doors which are stronger, come in a variety of colours and look great.” In response to demand from customers, Rainbow also offers a guttering, fascia, soffit and cladding service – providing a complete service to revamp a home’s exterior.

As West Yorkshire Playhouse prepares for its biggest Christmas yet, the theatre’s workshop, wardrobe and rehearsal rooms are a hive of activity. his year the Playhouse is producing three Christmas shows, headed up by a brand new production of White Christmas. Darren Day and Oliver Tompsett lead a cast of 17 West End performers in this spectacular new staging of the Broadway musical. A new production of Roald Dahl’s family adventure James and The Giant Peach takes over the Courtyard Theatre and, following its huge success last year, Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas returns for little ones. The shows bring together more than 35 performers – including West End singers and dancers, actor-musicians and a young company of eleven including members of West Yorkshire Playhouse Youth Theatre. For the Wardrobe team, this means making a dazzling array of outfits. “We’ve counted up 230 costumes and we’re also creating 19 wigs”, said Victoria Marzetti, the Playhouse’s Head of Wardrobe. “Our White Christmas cast have 10 or 11 costume changes each – and one of the company, James Darch, has 15!” A team of five is cutting, stitching and fitting for all three shows. Many of the costumes are being made from scratch, from

sketches created by the shows’ designers, and involve making everything from ball gowns to ladybird, earthworm and centipede costumes for James and The Giant Peach. “We’re also working with a tailor and milliner”, said Victoria. “There are really big production numbers in White Christmas – for one we have 12 actors in matching outfits, and

we’re hand-stitching a lot of the detail. With up to seven performances taking place some days, the teams won’t only be busy making costumes but keeping them looking fabulous on stage. ollowing retirement from the West Yorkshire Police, ‘Peter Churchill’ published his first crime novel, The Cut, on Amazon last month, where it went straight to #2 in the Crime Thrillers free-download charts. Writing under a nom de plume to protect him from the criminal world he worked in as a covert officer for 22 years, Peter brings his experience and authority to bear in The Cut, an intriguing and gripping tale of international drug importation and murder, told in vivid detail

and with sometimes shocking realism. The story may be intercontinental, but The Cut is firmly rooted in and around 1990’s Leeds and local landmarks and locations feature prominently, lending a new menace and significance as the gritty drama plays out. The plot revolves around a ruthless gangster, Philip Simpson, and Detective Sergeant Robert Rawdon Wolfe’s attempts to bring him to justice, and is the first in a trilogy of stories centred around DS Wolfe. To further distance the author from the threat of repercussions from the criminal underworld, a new publishing company has been created to front the publication of the Wolfe Trilogy. just as exciting as the first and will be published later this year.

The choir is an amalgamation of the Heritage Singers, the service choir celebrating 20 years this year, and the Masterworks Chorale concert choir, which is celebrating its fifth year. “Touring is an important part of what we do”, said Musical Director, Tim Knight. “It enables us to take a rich variety of British choral music overseas and gives our singers the chance to experience the local cultures.” This will be the Heritage Singers third visit to the USA and they will be presenting a full range of concerts and services in the cathedrals of Manhattan, as well as New York suburbs. “Choir tours may seem like a holiday, but they are also hard work!” said bass Mike Rignall. “The experience is life enriching.

he Club is now in its 83rd season and is proud to maintain the tradition of arranging programmes made up of instrumental and solo vocal items, chamber ensembles, choral and orchestral works, all of which are performed by the members, who in turn provide an audience for one another. Initially all members were performers, but now there are members who come solely to listen and to enjoy the wide variety of programmes on offer.

The club is happy to welcome new members

The club is happy to welcome new members, especially those who wish to play or sing, either as soloists or as part of an ensemble. If you are interested, go along and experience a typical evening. The Club meets every two or three weeks at 7.30pm on Saturdays at Adel Methodist Church Hall. Full details of dates of meetings, together with examples of past programmes are available at www.theleedsmusicclub.org or, for more information, call he General Secretary, Dawn Lloyd, on 01924 252329.

Events like singing at the Menin Gate in Ypres are once in a lifetime opportunities.” Fundraising is underway and the choir welcomes opportunities to sing to help with this. The choir can be seen at the Leeds Russian and Polish Music Festival in December and at its annual Christmas events at Fountains Abbey and Kirkstall Abbey. The choir currently has a few vacancies. Affordable Actor Reece Dinsdale recently received the 2014 Yorkshire Award for Arts and Entertainment, in recognition of his distinguished stage and screen career, following his role as Alan Bennett in the West Yorkshire Playhouse’s critically acclaimed production of Untold Stories: Hymn and Cocktail Sticks. “What an honour!” said Reece. “To be rewarded for the whole body of my work by my own people gives me an enormous feeling of pride. For it to come hot on the heels of playing Alan Bennett, Yorkshire’s favourite son, at my favourite theatre is just the icing on the cake. I am deeply grateful.” Directed by Associate Director Mark Rosenblatt, Alan Bennett’s autobiographical double bill received great acclaim, with Reece in the role of one of our region’s most distinctive voices. The production received its regional premiere as part of the Playhouse’s Alan Bennett Season. “It was a natural choice to approach Reece Dinsdale for the role of Alan Bennett in Untold Stories”, said James Brining, the Playhouse’s artistic director. “Not only one of Yorkshire’s great, versatile actors, he has a special connection to our theatre having starred in its opening production in 1990. He rose to the challenge of playing Yorkshire’s most iconic writer in a season of plays in his home city, and his performance was praised by audiences and critics alike. We’re thrilled he’s won a Yorkshire Award in recognition of his work.”

Art for Cancer Research Students of the Howard Carlisle Water Colour Painting School will hold an ‘Affordable Art Sale’ on Saturday 13th December at The Grove Centre, New St, Horsforth, and 100% of all picture sales will be donated to Cancer Research. The paintings will range from landscape to abstract, and all will be very reasonably priced. All paintings will be mounted and included with each purchase will be a discount voucher for local framing. The watercolour school has be running for over 25 years and has 150 artists – some of whom have been members and painting for a similar period. Recent artistic ventures include a celebratory painting of the Queen, painted by all 150 members, which now hangs in Horsforth Museum. The School has also been commissioned to paint a large painting of the Brownlee brothers and David Stone, Olympic medalists, for the Brownlee Stone Centre in Horsforth. The exhibition is open to the public on Saturday 13th December, 10am – 4pm. There will be a small donation entry fee for Cancer Research.

eeds Minister will once again play host to the Macmillan Christmas Carol Concert on Wednesday 17th December, starting at 6.30pm. The concert will feature the Grammar School at Leeds and the Minster Choir. New acts include the Barbershop Quartet, a saxophonist, and singer Hayley Melling. Readings will be delivered by the Lord Mayor of Leeds and Katherine Dow Blyton, who plays Emmerdale’s entertaining vicar, Harriet Finch. The money raised will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support, which provides practical, medical and financial provision for those affected by cancer, and The Robert Ogden

Macmillan Centre, a cancer information and support centre at St James’s University Hospital. The organising committee is hoping to beat last year’s amazing total of £2,300 and is also seeking sponsorship for this year’s event. A donation of £200 would fund a Macmillan nurse for a whole day or could contribute towards the running of the new Leeds Cancer Support Group. The award-winning musical ‘Top Hat’ brings a real touch of romance and nostalgia to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 23rd December to Saturday 11th January 2015. f you saw Top Hat at Leeds Grand a couple of years ago, don’t think for a minute that this is the same show! We chatted to producer Kenny Wax who brought Top Hat to the UK. Needless to say, it wasn’t easy to get the rights to perform it. Irving Berlin’s two daughters and their New York office are regularly inundated with requests. But Kenny was determined and charmed his way into the office and persuaded them that his production would be the best!

The show has plot, story and humour, with great singers, dancers, actors and comic characters

The first version went on tour in 2011 and the New York office actually came over to catch the show in Canterbury. Afterwards they got together and discussed what they thought worked and what didn’t. Collaborating closely together they cut a couple of the less well known numbers and added 11 new ones! Irving Berlin wrote 1,500 songs but only five of these were included in the movie – so this stage version is a real treat. “I wanted our Top Hat to show the splendour of the period”, said Kenny. “I wanted the full version,

the full story, not just a selection of song and dance numbers. It is a big, spectacular, old fashioned show. If you’re expecting a Strictly Come Dancing concert, think again! This has plot, story and humour, with great singers, dancers, actors and comic characters.” The current show touring the UK is this new version. To date it has won ‘Best New Musical’, ‘Best Choreography’ and ‘Best Costume Design’ in the Olivier Awards, as well as the Evening Standard Award for ‘Best Night Out’. Jon Morrels costumes (of which there are 200!) and Bill Deamer’s choreography are absolutely stunning. Kenny claims that this tour has the best dancers ever, and the show will certainly over-deliver on your expectations. Just to give you some idea of the scale of the show…. It requires eight 40ft articulated lorries to transport the set, three days and 70 people to build it! Stepping into the shoes of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the roles of Jerry Travers and Dale Tremont, are Alan Burkitt and Charlotte Gooch. They are joined by Clive Hayward as Horace Hardwick, Rebecca Thornhill as Madge Hardwick, Sebastien Torkia as Alberto Beddini and John Conroy as Horace’s valet Bates. Performed by a cast of 29 and accompanied by 11 musicians, the show includes classics such as ‘Cheek to Cheek’, ‘Isn’t It a Lovely Day to be Caught in the Rain’ and ‘Top Hat, White Tie and Tails’, ‘Let’s Face the Music and Dance’, and the show opens with a rip roaring rendition of the fabulous ‘Puttin’ On the Ritz’.

Don’t miss it!

As Christmas draws closer, our thoughts turn to planning the wines we’d like to celebrate with on Christmas Day. erhaps the first choice could be between Champagne and Prosecco. The UK is the largest market outside France for Champagne and it’s synonymous with celebration. However there is a comparatively new Italian pretender challenging the status quo! This year, for the very first time, global sales of Prosecco have overtaken those of Champagne, and it is more reasonably priced. Its lighter body, citrus character, and frequently off-dry nature make it very quaffable. English sparkling wine is also on the rise – the quality has improved no end and it’s well worth a look.

To accompany the ubiquitous turkey, take a look at the fuller bodied whites such as Chardonnay or Chenin Blanc, or medium bodied reds, like Rioja or Pinot Noir. The key, no matter what food you are having, is to match the weight of both the food and wine taking into account the intensity of flavour and the texture of the food. Ports work really well with Christmas Pudding and Mince Pies (try an aged Tawny or LBV), and they go magnificently well with any chocolate-based desserts due to their depth of flavour. For sherry trifles, of course, it has to be Sherry (try a Pedro Ximenez which can be divine!). If you’re opting for fruit based desserts, try a more classic dessert wine like Barsac or Sauternes from France. The acidity/ freshness of a good dessert wine pairs well with any fruit acidity.

Ports work really

well with Christmas Pudding and Mince Pies

When it comes to cheese, both Port and dessert wine work well, depending on the strength of flavour, fattiness and saltiness of the cheese. Hard cheeses are definitely the most accommodating. Port and Stilton is a classic pairing due to the intense flavour of both. Another perfect match is goats’ cheese and Sauvignon Blanc, the acidity and tangy flavour marrying well. With softer cheeses, such as Brie, try a good White Burgundy (or other Chardonnay) as the acidity will cut through the gluey coating nature, while the wine’s body matches up to the weight of the cheese.

We recently spent a fabulous evening at the Crafthouse restaurant at the top of Trinity Leeds. What a location! ogether with its sister restaurant, Angelica, on the floor above, it has some of the best views across the city. Angelica’s heated, wrap-around terrace is the perfect spot to just relax and sip cocktails. You’d almost forget you were in Leeds! We were tempted by the special menu ‘Bridlington to Bordeaux & Between’, designed by Executive Head Chef Lee Bennett, with a nod to his Yorkshire roots and international experience. It turns out that Lee has worked all over the world, including Equinox Restaurants in Singapore and Alain Ducasse in Paris, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, and London’s Le Pont de la Tour. He has also appeared on Celebrity Master Chef, and represented Yorkshire on BBC’s The Great British Menu. “I am excited about returning to Yorkshire as it will enable me to use the amazing produce that the region is famous for”, he told us. “I have lived in Dubai, Paris, London and Singapore, working with some truly great chefs. For me, Crafthouse is an opportunity to run the kind of operation I have become accustomed to running yet being in my home region.” Lee isn’t one to sit on his laurels. He likes to keep things fresh (in all senses of the word)

– that’s why he slips in the occasional special menu like this. It’s an opportunity to source new suppliers and tempt diners back for yet another taste adventure. Bridlington to Bordeaux and Between (tracking Lee’s journey from Yorkshire to France) started with a Classic Salad Lyonnais with a soft poached egg on top and grain mustard dressing. This was accompanied by a small glass of Timothy Taylor Yorkshire ale, which was a bit of a surprise but went surprisingly well with the salad. Then came an absolutely delicious Bridlington Bay Lobster Bisque with fennel and

I was assured that this was a beast that certainly didn’t die in vain

dill. If you have been a bit sniffy about English wines, perhaps you should think again, because the 2013 Chapel Down, Primrose Hill, Bacchus, that Lee teamed with this bisque was so good! Next was a Vendee Quail Pithivier with wild mushrooms and shallot salad accompanied by a 2012 Chateau Laulerie Merlot, Bergerac. Not being a meat eater, I was treated to a gorgeous root vegetable terrine. This was followed by Black Angus South Devon beef fillet with potato fondant, braised red cabbage and parsnip puree. I was assured that this was a beast that certainly didn’t die in vain and the Chateau de Ricaud, Bordeaux was perfect with it. My meat-free dish was grilled Monkfish on a bed of superb

seafood risotto. I had no idea where I was putting all this food, but everything was so tasty I just didn’t want to stop….and I didn’t! The Blue d’Auvernge with Muscat grapes and oatmeal biscuits arrived with some wonderful Ampleforth Cider Brandy. Then Grandmarnier soufflé with blood orange sorbet and a glass of Vouvray ‘la Dilettante’ Breton, Loire, followed by coffee and Bridlington seaside doughnuts. As I saw the little donuts arrive I thought “No way!” I have no idea where they went but following much dipping in chocolate, not one remained! What I was most impressed with at Crafthouse, apart from the wonderful food of course,

was the service. Not only was it friendly and efficient, everyone was so knowledgeable. No matter what question we threw at them about the food or the wine, they had all the answers and were so happy to share it! I understand they have to sample all the menus – poor things! Crafthouse is perfect for special events, family gatherings – or any occasion really. A friend recently proposed to his girlfriend on Angelica’s terrace and I can’t think of a more romantic spot. Our dinner cost £55 per person (excluding wine), but you can also enjoy a three-course lunch or Early Bird Dinner for just £22.50. If you were looking for a reason to venture into the Trinity Centre…. this is definitely it! Crafthouse, Level Five Trinity Leeds Tel: 0113 897 0444

The Public Inquiry into the proposed trolleybus system between park & rides at Bodington and Stourton, originally scheduled for 30 days, finally ended on 31st October after 72 days. he proposal received 1,759 objections, whilst the Metro team proposing the scheme tabled over 1,100 official documents. These documents were supported by testimony from 16 NGT witnesses (five Leeds City Council, two from Metro and nine external consultants). The Inspector is expected to submit his report to the Secretary of State next Summer, probably after the General Election. In the meantime, the Inquiry has established some interesting facts. Metro’s own documents indicate that NGT would lead to reduced public transport service frequencies. Indeed, the envisaged service bus frequencies in parts of Cookridge and Tinshill would fall below the Council’s own accessibility standard. Metro’s figures also indicate that NGT would lead to increased door-to-door journey times for many journeys (including to Merrion Centre, The Core, St John’s Centre, Victoria Quarter, Victoria Gate, Leeds Market and Bus Station). And, most passengers would be expected to stand as the trolleybuses typically only seat about 40 passengers. Forecasts of NGT revenue are based on untested assumptions made by Metro’s consultants, whilst revenue predictions have not even been tested against possible serious and sustained competition from bus operators. The NGT model assumes most passengers would switch from

Public inquiry ends after 72 days

buses to the trolleybus. There are many other questionable aspects to the scheme. One is left wondering whether the proposal is just a white-elephant scheme for which the Council has agreed to cover any construction cost overruns together with any losses in operation. The proposal could prove costly to the city and its reputation, whilst squeezing other council budgets and damaging other council services. The Inquiry documents submitted by NWLTF can be viewed on www.nwltf.org.uk - The North West Leeds

Thank You! So many people are concerned about the proposed trolleybus scheme on the A660. However the majority of us were tied up with general living and working responsibilities and were unable to invest the time they might have liked to in challenging the plans. Thank goodness for the North West Leeds Transport Forum team (NWLTF), the A660 Joint Council and the many others who have put their lives on hold over recent months to attend and speak at the Public Inquiry. We were all very lucky to have a group of people who had the time and the expertise to go through the plans with a fine-tooth comb, flag up discrepancies and challenge aspects which showed the proposed plans to be unsuitable for this route.

Neighbourhoods – doing it better locally I want to congratulate the Headingley Neighbourhood Forum, of which I am proud to be a member, on being officially designated by Leeds City Council. If you want to be involved, visit. www. headingleyneighbourhoodplan.org.uk/ or get in touch via my contact details at the end of this column Speaking of doing things better locally, there is much discussion about government powers being devolved to an appropriate local level. To give you an idea of how slow Whitehall works, this process started in 2004! It’s a discussion that is urgent because we can do things so much better if ideas and policies are devised in Leeds rather than in London. For example, take the Government’s current

Some local authorities have decided to switch the majority of their street lights to part-night. Leeds is proposing to part-night switch around 8% of its 92,000 street lights. To date, no detrimental effects have been reported in areas of the country where this has happened. Risk assessments, including site visits, will be carried out in each area to determine which lights are appropriate. All residents living within 50 metres of one or more of the lights selected to be switched to part-night between midnight and 5:30am will receive a letter. All street lights will continue to be lit until midnight, and the majority will continue to be in operation throughout the night. Only those selected to be part-night will go out around midnight and signage informing road users will be installed. Part-night switching will be avoided in areas where, during the

flagship ‘The Work Programme’. It spends over £3 billion to achieve a success rate of 6-8% in getting long term unemployed people back into work. That’s statistically the same as doing nothing. The Leeds City Council approach is a bit different. Developed locally it achieves a success rate of over 60%. Imagine how many more people we could help if we had more funding? Areas with sheltered housing and other residences accommodating vulnerable people will not be affected, nor will areas around 24hr emergency services sites – including hospitals. Formal pedestrian crossings, subways, enclosed footpaths and alleyways where one end links to a street that is lit all night and where there are potential hazards on the highway such as roundabouts, central islands, chicanes and traffic calming features, and where public transport stops are in use, will also not be affected.

Bowel Cancer’s On 9th November, a plaque commemorating the 48 men from Meanwood who lost their lives in the Great War was unveiled at the War Memorial on Memorial

Decembeard Campaign

Drive, Meanwood.

Beating Bowel Cancer’s Decembeard campaign is calling on men to ditch their razors and grow a beard during the month of December to help raise awareness of the disease and funds for the charity.

ynthia Ruston spent twelve months researching the lives of those who fought and lost their lives in WW1 and, together with the Meanwood Village Association, has secured a grant of £7,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to honour them. The grant has funded the plaque, a memorial avenue of It has trees in Meanwood Park, and a book about the men, their been an families, and the impact the First World War had on the honour community. “It’s been a real labour of to reveal love”, said Cynthia, “and an the lives honour to reveal the lives of these brave men who fought 100 of these years ago. Meanwood was a very different place then, and their loss brave men had a huge impact on the village.” Cynthia’s research involved

piecing together information from Parish records, local archives, online genealogy sites, and interviews with relatives of the men. “It’s fitting that their names are commemorated alongside the Meanwood Men who lost their lives in the 2nd World War- we owe them all so much.” The book will be launched at a ‘Vintage Tea Dance’ on 21st December at the Parochial Hall. Copies can be purchased from Cynthia or through the Meanwood Village Association. The Association is very grateful to Cynthia for all her work in getting the sacrifice of these men properly recognised.

Bowel Cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer, but it’s a very treatable condition if caught early. So it’s important that people are aware of the symptoms. Decembeard is a fun, easy way for people to raise awareness of the condition - no 100 mile treks or jumping out of planes, just stop shaving! The charity is hoping a total of 2,500 men throughout the UK will raise £100 each. The money will help to fund the charity’s work supporting people with bowel cancer and their families, together with raising awareness of the symptoms and the need for early diagnosis. For further information and to sign up, visit www. decembeard.org and join the rest of the ‘grizzlies’ for December!

deputation of Grove Lane (Headingley) residents recently went to Leeds City Council to request that action be taken to reduce the incidents of speeding traffic, dangerous driving and accidents on Grove Lane and surrounding roads. The residents also cited difficulties with crossing the road, cycling, and for families walking their children to local schools and nurseries. There were five accidents in a period of just eight weeks over the Summer, four of which involved cars crossing the pavement and damaging walls, fencing, road signs and a telecoms box. Had pedestrians

been on the pavements at the time there would most certainly have been injuries. More recently a car mounted the pavement when swerving to avoid another, close to a family on its way to Shire Oak School. In October a resident carrying her two year old child over the zebra crossing was lucky to escape injury when two cars ran into the back of the car stopping to let her pass, shunting the car forward and narrowly missing them. In response to residents’ complaints, the police have carried out speed operations over the last few years and have always found a large proportion of motorists driving at over 30mph. The most recent speed operation resulted in 20 motorists being stopped for going over 30mph. Two were issued with tickets for doing over 40mph – many of the drivers believed the road to be a 40mph road. In January this year, 42 vehicles were recorded doing speeds of over 35mph in just one hour.

Are you at or near retirement?

The road is wide and unrestricted. Drivers appear to find it easy to get up to speeds of 40mph or more. The road crosses the Meanwood Valley Trail and at that point there is no safe or supported crossing, resulting in pedestrians, wheelchair users and cyclists waiting long periods to cross. Cars are frequently observed overtaking at speed, sometimes close to the zebra crossing, and often fail to stop at the only pedestrian crossing. The deputation requested that a number of measures be taken to improve the safety for all users of Grove Lane, Shaw Lane, Grove Road and Monk Bridge Road, so that everyone can cycle and drive safely in the local community.

id you know that the electoral registration system is changing? And it’s going to affect everyone living in North Leeds. The new system is the biggest change to the electoral registration system in nearly 100 years! It is being introduced to replace the one where the ‘head of household’ registered everyone living in a property. Now, each individual will be responsible for registering themselves. People who were on the old electoral register will be transferred automatically onto the new one. However, if you weren’t registered before, or if you’ve recently moved, you won’t be automatically transferred. That, of course, applies to a

lot of people in Leeds North – including students. And remember - students may register to vote at both their term-time and non term-time addresses – though they can only vote at one of these in a general election. Many North Leeds residents who haven’t yet registered may have received a letter through the post reminding them. But be careful – the letter suggests there’s a deadline coming up for registration. You’ll actually be able to register until well into 2015. You can also register online. ast week, a team of volunteers from Leeds University and Leeds Beckett University Unions braved the weather to visit over 500 households in the Hyde Park, Headingley and Beckett’s Park areas as part of the Get To Know Your Neighbour campaign. This annual initiative aims to make students aware that they are living in an established community, as well as fostering a greater sense of community for all residents. The campaign was born from a partnership between the university unions, West Yorkshire Police and Leeds City Council.

The team visited over 500 households

We make it easy... ...and we’re local too.

Central to this initiative is the belief that dialogue between neighbours is the most effective way to address any social issues that may arise during the year, such as noise. The campaign also advocates greater integration of students into their local community, as this is one of the best ways to realise the vast potential students have to offer their community. To facilitate this dialogue, a leaflet with two postcards was handed out with a teabag, encouraging residents to introduce themselves to their

neighbours and get to know one another over a cuppa. This was accompanied by the ‘Your Guide To Living in Leeds’, which provides excellent communityrelated information. October’s campaign was extremely successful and well received, with volunteers engaging with over 280 residents. Following this success, the Get To Know Your Neighbour campaign was rolled out again in November. So, take advantage of the opportunities provided by the initiative and Get To Know Your Neighbour!

he newly-designated Headingley Neighbourhood Forum held its inaugural meeting recently at HEART, attended by about 30 people. This was the first meeting of a Neighbourhood Forum in Inner North West Leeds. The Forum, consisting of people who live and work in the area and local councillors, is responsible for preparing the Neighbourhood Plan for the Headingley Neighbourhood, which has also been designated by the Council. The area extends from Beckett’s Park across to North Hyde Park, and from Shaw Lane down to Victoria Road. The meeting began by explaining what a Neighbourhood Plan involved, and the work that

local residents have done so far. Officers were elected, including, Rev Tony Whatmough of St Michael’s Church as Chair. The programme of work which lies ahead was outlined, and the available resources noted – including grants from the Council and the Government, and expert advice from local planners. And, a Steering Group was set up to get down to practical business. The second part of the meeting was concerned with the Headingley environment. It looked at the Headingley & Hyde Park Neighbourhood Design Statement, which already lays down many guidelines. City-wide policies which have to be abided by were considered, and new proposals for green space discussed. If you live in the area, and would like to join the Forum, visit www.headingleyneighbourhoodplan. org.uk/, complete an application form, and send it to the Secretary, Headingley Neighbourhood Plan, c/o HEART, Bennett Road, Leeds LS6 3HN, or email info@headingleyneighbourhoodplan.org.uk

he refusal of planning applications for housing opposite Adel Parish Church has been warmly welcomed. At a meeting on 9th October Leeds City Council refused two amended applications by David Wilson Homes and Hallam Land to build housing on the site opposite Adel Parish Church between Church Lane and Otley Road. Adel Neighbourhood Forum had led the campaign to engage with the Community, which resulted in over 700 objections. Cllr Barry Anderson was a strong supporter in achieving this excellent result, as were MP Greg Mulholland, Adel Crag, Adel Association, English Heritage, Ancient Monuments and The

Protection of Rural England. The main reasons for rejection of the applications were: - The applications were premature. - Failure to produce necessary highway information. - Unsuitable access onto Otley Road. - Holt Avenue and Ash Road have inappropriate layout and geometry for the safe flow of traffic. - Failure to produce information on the necessary contributions to support the infrastructure of the proposed developments. The developers now have the right of appeal to the Planning Inspector. The Forum

is considering further research on key issues, and whether it should be legally represented by a barrister at any future hearing or appeal. This will obviously be expensive and money will need to be raised. Shorter days may mean that there is less time to spend in the garden, but there are plenty of useful jobs to do when you can get out there. Shrubs to Enjoy Even in Winter, a walk in the garden can bring unexpected pleasures. Many shrubs look spectacular, with beautiful bark, berries or flowers, and some of those flowers have the most delicious scent. Mahonia x media ‘Winter Sun’ produces fingers of fragrant bright yellow flowers above its Holly-like leaves; Hamamelis offers little tassels of gold, orange or red with surprising citrus scents in late winter; and Sarcococca hookeriana humilis (the Christmas Box) is one

Pair these with the colourful winter stems of Dogwoods such as Cornus Alba and long lasting berries of Pyracantha or Cotoneaster and you will have a display to warm the coldest of December days.

Jobs for Fine Days Tidying and sweeping are the traditional pastimes of the winter gardener and there are certainly great benefits to be had from both.

Sheds and greenhouses that have been cleaned and tidied will be ready for action when the growing season begins again in Spring and pests will have nowhere to hide to overwinter. Drives and patios will be much less slippery if swept and kept clean over the winter months, preventing the growth of algae and moss. As the plants die back, fences and structures will be exposed and easier to treat or paint. What better time to choose a striking new colour for your fence? You will also be able to make an access hole in your fence for hedgehogs and other wildlife to use when they awake in the Spring. The hole can be just 130mm square and can be cut into the fence or a ‘tunnel’ made by scraping out soil from underneath.

The Veg Plot In the vegetable garden leeks, sprouts, winter cabbage and some root crops can still be harvested. Potting up a few herbs to keep on the kitchen windowsill is a nice way to bring the garden indoors.

Album Review:

Tim Loud – Born to Lose

This fine eight track collection by tireless and talented local artist Tim Loud delivers a rousing shot of country/folk /blues with a punk edge and shows Loud to be a singer-songwriter/arranger of some considerable skill. lbum opener and title track, Born to Lose eases one in gently with an undulating honky tonk feel and a vintage blues structure augmented with harmonica and piano. The jaunty skiffle of Is That All There Is? throws some exuberant fiddle into the mix and Loud’s masterful strumming and picking is underpinned by tasteful slide guitar touches. The galloping rhythm of the forceful, driving Not a Number is propelled by a sense of simmering agitation and dissatisfaction with the status quo also evidenced on the radgey, pissed off Age of the Idiot, a full throated howl of discontent delivered at breakneck speed. The haunting strings and striking fingerpicking of November Sky evokes the classic alt/psychfolk of Pentangle or John Martyn and boasts some fine lyricism and vocal work while showing Loud to be adept at blending musical textures. Songs like this and the brilliant closing track, Razorblade Valentine reveal Loud to be a songwriter of insight and wit while straightforward blues romp, Other Guy recalls Robert Johnson’s Red Hot and shows him to be also partial to a footsomping knees up. Overall, the album finds Loud in fine voice indeed and

Increasingly enjoyable and rewarding with every listen

the ensemble playing by his small, mostly acoustic backing group is tightly cohesive and impeccable throughout. The folky, countryish, blues-tinged singer-songwriter scene is a fairly crowded marketplace and too few artists manage to bring anything suitably unique to the table to distinguish themselves. Here, Loud succeeds with aplomb armed with well written songs, a confident swagger and an undertone of unpredictability and bristling punk attitude. Increasingly enjoyable and rewarding with every listen, there’s much more to Born to Lose than first meets the ear and if forced to pick fault I would only say that, clocking in at just over 23 minutes, it’s just all over far too quickly. To purchase your copy of Born to Lose (and you really ought to) go to Timloud.bandcamp.com. Do it now!

FILM

REVIEW BY BRENDAN CAMPBELL

NIGHTCRAWLER DIRECTED BY: DAN GILROY STARRING: :JAKE GYLLENHAAL, RENE RUSSO, BILL PAXTON CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 117 MINS This supremely confident directorial debut from screenwriter Dan Gilroy is a decidedly dark and disquieting glimpse at the morally bankrupt machinations of the more exploitative elements US news media. It’s also an unnerving character study of what’s sure to become one of cinema’s more memorable sociopaths brought vividly to life by Jake Gyllenhaal’s intense and focussed central performance. Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a maniacally driven chancer consumed by an obsessive/ compulsive pursuit of success at any cost. Gaunt, hollow cheeked and bug eyed, Bloom has a frenzied, hungry air about him and is given to spouting self-actualisation business seminar waffle at anyone within earshot. One night while driving he witnesses a car crash and sees the scene set upon by cameramen. This is his introduction to the predatory, competitive world of ‘stringers’, freelance film crews who monitor police radio and race to crime scenes aiming to capture the most lurid, sensational footage they will then sell to local TV news networks. Sensing an opportunity, Bloom doesn’t hesitate to jump on this bandwagon and his utter lack of empathy or scruples means he’s a natural. He has no qualms, for instance, about manipulating a crime scene to get a better shot or even engineering ‘newsworthy’ incidents himself.

cutting media satire and an adrenalized crime thriller, the film succeeds on many levels

Bloom’s persistence and talent for thrusting himself into the centre of the story earn him traction with, and the begrudging professional respect of, Nina Romina (Rene Russo) the morning news director at a local station. Under pressure to bolster her falling ratings, Nina is also desperate and with the shocking and compelling footage Lou can provide she sees an asset. What she’s perhaps not prepared for is Lou’s fierce and tenacious negotiating style. Always reaching, Lou drives a hard bargain and even, during cringe-making and ‘is this guy for real?!’ dinner scene, tries to negotiate Nina into sleeping with him. Yeah, the guy’s a real piece of work. Much like the seamy world it portrays, Nightcrawler is fast paced, morally murky and deeply

unsettling. It serves as confirmation, if any was needed, that Los Angeles is a hellish, debauched cesspool and that US television news seems to exist primarily to terrify the bejesus out of the American populace. Both a cutting media satire and an adrenalized crime thriller, the film succeeds on many levels and features truly outstanding work from Gyllenhaal and Russo. Like the character of Lou Bloom himself, Nightcrawler is relentless and nasty but, like a highway car wreck, it’s hard not to look. It may leave a bad taste in the mouth but it’s certainly worth a watch. recommend it. A word of warning, however, to married couples who choose to catch a screening on date night; your spouse will likely be eyeing you with wary suspicion afterwards.

ctor Ashley Tabatabai, who has been based in Leeds since 2006 and splits his time between the UK and Los Angeles, stars in the World War II Film ‘Allies’, which has just been released. He joined the project earlier this year playing the role of an American Commander. Although British, Ashley grew up in Spain and went through the International school system, where everyone speaks American English – luckily, in this case, the accent stuck! The movie was produced for an estimated $3m and shot on location across the UK. It is based on true events and follows the story of a team of British soldiers dropped behind enemy lines in

France. They are lead by a US captain, played by Julian Ovenden (currently in Downton Abbey) and are on a mission that could shorten the war. “The scale of the project was very ambitious and what has been produced is really incredible”, says Ashley. “It’s a great promotion for independent film in the UK. -There’s lots of great talent here. In my experience, who you know does matter, but it’s ultimately your ability that gets you the work on an ongoing basis. I was referred to the Casting Director on Allies by an actor friend. That got me in the door. Then they reviewed some of my previous work and offered me the role. I’d like to think that’s because of the quality of what I’ve done to date.” Ashley is currently working on a feature film that he has developed with Leeds-based filmmakers. “Leeds may not be an epicentre for film yet, but we have been able to bring together some amazing local filmmakers for this project.” ‘Allies’ is available to buy online and in store.

he Club has a long history of playing in local leagues, having joined the Leeds League in 1978. After the demise of that league, the club joined the Wetherby League, where it has had much success in both the league and cup competitions for the last 14 years. The club runs two senior men’s teams and a very successful junior section, with age groups ranging from U9s through to U17s. Following the recent invitation to join the Airedale and Wharfdale League, the club is busy preparing itself for greater challenges ahead, and player recruitment is top of the agenda for the committee. A working party has been set up to identify and recruit talented cricketers from the area. These players may already be playing in the Airedale and Wharfdale League looking for a fresh challenge or they

could be from other local leagues and have the ability to step up to a higher grade of cricket. With five qualified ECB Level 2 coaches, junior cricket is in very good hands and there is still availability for boys and girls aged 7 – 17 to join the club for season 2015. The club is also seeking new sponsors to support the development of cricket at both junior and senior levels for the years ahead. So, if you are a player looking to play a good quality standard of cricket, a junior looking for a new club, or a business that would like to support local cricket and market their brand at the same time, please contact Mark Ripley on 07970 566139.

“It has been great to meet with Pat and get some top tips”, said Emily. “I have started training and am really looking forward to completing the race for Marie Curie.” Emily and Pat are raising money to support Marie Curie Nurses in West Yorkshire. “The money Emily and I raise will help to support the nurses, who do an incredible job supporting terminally ill people in the area”, said Pat. Research across disability groups has shown that participation in sport and physical activity leads to improved levels of physical health and wellbeing. ittle Hiccups, a local group providing support for families with children with special needs or disabilities, is seeking funding to start a regular disability multi-sports event for under eight year olds.

If you have a child with special needs you will know the frustration of trying to find a sporting activity that suits your child. Although most mainstream sports accept all children, the reality is that a child with disabilities just cannot compete at the same level as other children. Most sports centres now offer a Disability Multi-Sports Day but these are generally aimed at older children. There is very little out there for the under eights. Little Hiccups recently arranged a Disability Multi-Sport Day for under eights. It was run

by coaches Brad Spurrs and Nick Smith, who were excellent role models as both have a disability and compete at quite a high level in their respective sports (cricket and wheelchair racing). They engaged the children beautifully with fun and accessible playground games and FUNdamentals – basic coordination games. “There is just nothing out there for young disabled children”, said Rochelle who attended the day with her daughter. “Isabelle had a great time. She rarely gets to join in sports and activities as most are aimed at children who can run or jump, or older disabled children. It’d be great for her

physical and social development.” “Little Hiccups is all about allowing children with disabilities to access areas they cannot normally access”, said event organiser Miriam Watson. “We were surprised to find that there was not more out there for under eights and, from the feedback we received from families, there is obviously a demand. It is vital that we get the financial support as it cannot go ahead without it.” For further information, contact Little Hiccups on 0783 123 0741, info@littlehiccups.co.uk or visit

RHS Maximises Outdoor Space with a Yurt! Richmond House School is maximising use of its ten acres of outdoor space by erecting a yurt in the school grounds.

With the launch of a new development project in West Yorkshire, educational charity Woodcraft Folk aims to support communities to set up new groups for children of all ages, he New Groups project, funded by the Youth United Foundation, hopes to recruit 120 new volunteers and create 400 new Woodcraft Folk places in West Yorkshire, starting in Headingley, Hyde Park, Meanwood, Harehills, Gledhow and Kirkstall Valley. support to new groups”, said Ellie Julings, Support Officer for the New Groups Project. “We are in a great position to reach those most in need of top quality youth provision.” The New Groups team would like to hear from people interested in helping with a new group; schools and community centres looking for activities for toddlers up to teenagers; and children and parents/ carers looking for fun activities and a friendly community. For further information about the new Woodcraft Folk plans nearest to you, contact: 07850 391637, email newgroups@ woodcraft.org.uk, or visitwww. woodcraft.org.uk/ngp

The yurt will be used as an outdoor classroom by all year groups, enabling the children to benefit from spending more time outdoors. Open space presents a new educational experience offering children opportunities for physical activity, exploration and greater engagement with nature. “The vision is to be a school that continues to develop the whole child, not just in the classroom, but beyond too”, said Paul Oldham, Deputy Head. “Our fields are a tremendous asset and we want to make best use of them. “All of the children will benefit from having lessons beyond the school building. They will be immersed in a multi-sensory experience. We aim to embed outdoor learning within the school curriculum e.g. history - an archaeological dig could be created; geography – learning about coordinates and direction; in maths, too – the list is endless. We have even installed giant musical instruments beside the yurt.”

ames Goldberg, in Year 7 at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), wanted to raise money to help beat cancer in memory of his father Richard, who had been a keen cyclist and charity fundraiser. He persuaded four friends to saddle up during the Summer holidays and cycle the LeedsLiverpool canal, pedalling 127 miles in the space of just three days. Joining James on the ride were Adam Best, Finlay Bruce, Oli Walton and Benjie Ambler and three of their dads. They raised a grand total of over £11,000 for Cancer Research UK, thanks to sponsorship from Hunters Estate Agents and the

generosity of family and friends. Chloé Williams, Cancer Research UK’s local fundraising manager for Leeds and Wakefield, came to school to thank the boys. “We are grateful and stunned at this amazing achievement by

At the start of this school year, the City of Leeds School in Hyde Park became Leeds City Academy. he academy is part of the White Rose Academies Trust , an independent charitable trust established by Leeds City College as ‘sponsor’ and currently comprising Leeds City Academy, Leeds West Academy (the former Intake), and Leeds East Academy in Seacroft. Head teacher, Georgie Sale, is delighted to see City of Leeds converted into an academy. Soon after becoming head three years ago the school was put into special measures and she was presented with a challenge! “I couldn’t have hoped for more”, she told us. “Being an academy brings more funding into the school and gives us more control of the budget. We have had great support from Leeds City Council. But the biggest advantage of all is that now our students will have access to all the courses Leeds City College offers, giving us one of the most extensive curricula in the area.” The students themselves have a new sense of pride in the school. They have a new uniform (which they have chosen), and standards have risen rapidly, with GCSE results in English doubling from 30% - 60%! “This is going to be an exciting and productive year”, said Georgie Sale. “We are looking forward to working in partnership with Leeds City College, which wants to offer a wider range of courses to our students, as well as raising standards in all subject areas.”

Talking to The World! Pupils from Leeds City Academy recently got up at the crack of dawn to take part in a BBC World Service programme in the build-up to the Scottish Independence referendum and focusing on identity. With 50 different nations represented, LCA provided the perfect location. Presenter Nuala McGovern was charmed by the students. The BBC team spent time in various classes interviewing the children, who they described as “clever, articulate and funny!” They talked about their experiences in Leeds and, after their birth nationality, identified with Yorkshire before England!

We are looking forward to working in partnership with Leeds City College

Following the broadcast, the school received tweets from all over the world and the BBC team described their visit as one of the best outside broadcasts of the year! “We have a population of eager, articulate young people”, said Ms Sale, “most of whom are new to this country. But they want to make Leeds their home, be involved and play a positive part in society.”

Let’s ‘Communicate’! The school made national headlines earlier this year when it proposed teaching English as a foreign language to all its pupils. As a result the school received a

flurry of both plaudits and abuse. The idea was to help the children achieve top grades in English. “The new GCSE exams demand a much higher level of English”, said Georgie Sale. “The levels of grammar, spelling and vocabulary needed to improve to get them.” Instituting this new regime went far beyond classroom English teachers. The entire staff (from Woodworking to Geography!) was trained to teach English as a second language by experts from Leeds Beckett and Sheffield Universities. Although a little skeptical at first, everyone soon threw their support behind the programme. “This new approach will equip all our children with the English language skills they need to reach their full potential”, said Georgie Sale. “The classes are taught according to the pupils’ fluency in

English. Fluent English speakers get a very different lesson to those with little or no English, and this is complemented by the efforts of the entire teaching staff throughout the school. “We are proud to be a multicultural school and will continue to promote new ideas encouraging a learning environment where all pupils are given the same chances to learn.”

This new approach will equip all our children with the English language skills they need to reach their full potential

The museum is currently exhibiting over 160 stunning artefacts from the British Museum as part of its ‘Roman Empire: Power & People’ touring exhibition, which runs until 4th January. I loved dressing up in the armour.” ‘We love the Romans’ was the latest in a series of fun and educational holiday workshops organised through a partnership between Leeds City Museum and GSAL. The next event will be ‘We Love Ancient Egypt’, which takes place at the museum on 20th February 2015.

‘Prime Minister’ Esther’s rousing opening speech set out a strong argument for school uniform to which ‘Leader of the Opposition’ Laraib, delivered a robust response. A spirited debate followed, with all members of the class joining in. Greg took the role of Speaker and called for order as the enthusiastic youngsters jumped to their feet to make their points. In the end the motion was carried decisively on a vote of 18 to eight. “This was a really lively debate that all the children took part in, making strong arguments for both sides”, said Greg. “They quickly grasped the way that parliamentary debates proceed and clearly enjoyed playing the roles of MPs, with more than half saying that they would like to be an MP one day! “I always enjoy these visits. If any other school would like me to come in to lead a mini parliament session, do contact my Leeds office.” Class teacher, Michael Pratten, added: “The experience was a great example of children learning through an activity that had relevance to their topic and to them as citizens.”

group of Horsforth and Cookridge toddlers recently helped to launch a charity campaign that aims to feed one million hungry children every day. Mary’s Meals launched its ‘Make it a Million’ campaign to raise awareness of its school feeding programmes in some of the world’s poorest countries. The charity currently reaches over 920,000 impoverished children with a nutritious meal every day they attend school. Supporters from Horsforth and Cookridge toddlers groups and child minders are encouraging

people to join the campaign and help the charity provide meals for a million children. Mary’s Meals attracts hungry children into the classroom where they can learn, thrive, and work towards a more positive future. It costs just £12.20 to feed a child for a whole school year. Mary’s Meals works across five continents, supporting children in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Last year, the local group undertook a sponsored toddle and raised enough money to feed a whole school for an entire year! “We’re all really proud to be involved in such a good cause and help launch this latest campaign”, said Sharon Key, chairperson. “Last year we were so pleased to raise such a significant amount. We’re hoping more groups in our area will get behind the Make it a Million campaign.”

asks volunteers to use their entrepreneurial skills to turn £10 into £100 or even more! “The £10 challenge is designed to bring communities together to support families in need without having a huge impact on time or resources”, said SNAPS Chair Samantha Grundy, who founded SNAPS. “We hope that the challenge will be fun for all those taking part and look forward to featuring the fundraising schemes on our website. We’re putting the fun into FUNdraising!” SNAPS now helps over 350 families whose children have a range of disabilities ranging from autism to complex physical needs. It holds its sessions at Pennyfield School, Meanwood. “We know there are many more families in Yorkshire that

SNAPS has already transformed hundreds of lives. The group supports families with disabled children through its unique Saturday group where it offers hydrotherapy, swimming lessons, dance, arts and crafts and coffee mornings for more than 50 families. Each session costs over £900 to run, as specially trained and qualified staff is needed to help the children and their families get as much out of the activities as possible. The £10 Challenge

“Today, around the world, 57 million children miss school because of poverty”, said Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, Founder and CEO of Mary’s Meals. “Instead of getting an education, they are working in fields, begging on street corners, or scavenging to survive. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
