An Alan Bennett Season at The Playhouse A Festival of Ideas in Headingley
The Etape du Dales
FEATURES
This month starts on a sad note with the news that Councillor Clive Fox, who had contributed a column to North Leeds Life for over five years, died suddenly. Many, many readers will miss his unique take on the antics of the Council and more besides. Our thanks go to Councillor Barry Anderson who helped us with his obituary further on in the magazine. There is lots of community activity this month – both Adel and Headingley are busy putting together Neighbourhood Plans, and the North West Leeds Transport Forum (www.nwltf.org.uk) questions the wisdom of the trolleybus on the A660 as the project goes to Public Enquiry. The first Festival of Ideas is taking place in
We look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Carole, Jack and the team.

Headingley; Friends of The Hollies are holding their annual plant sale; York Gate Garden reopens; and Meanwood has a Community Orchard. Fans of Alan Bennett are in for a treat as a season of his work launches at West Yorkshire Playhouse; Marti Pellow talks to us about appearing in Evita at The Grand; and there is a knockout exhibition coming to New Dock Hall. Plus, we find out about the Etape du Dales and lots of other physical challenges. And then it’s on to June! Please get all your news and notices to us as soon as you can (before 1st May if possible). The deadline for advertising is 9th May.

gly Duckling, choreographed by company dancers Dreda Blow and Sebastian Loe, was Northern Ballet’s first ballet created for children. The BAFTA award-winning television adaptation was commissioned by the BBC for CBeebies last year. Funding from the Leeds Inspired fund allowed Northern Ballet to create Ugly Duckling, with the aim of reaching children and families who wouldn’t normally go to ballet. Initially performed at community venues in Leeds, the ballet received further funding from Arts Council England to tour

throughout the North of England. To date more than 25,000 children and their families have seen a live performance, over 250,000 have watched the television adaptation, and 400,000 have experienced it through BBC iPlayer and the CBeebies website. “Our partnership with the BBC in the creation of Ugly Duckling was a fantastic way to introduce ballet to new audiences”, said Mark Skipper, Northern Ballet’s Chief Executive. “We are thrilled that it has received this recognition.”

FRANCIS MARTINEAU LUPTON (1848-1921) BUSINESSMAN AND HOUSING REFORMER
There are still streets and buildings around Leeds named after the Lupton family, and many reminders of their contribution over the years to the life and improvement of the city: in industry and commerce, in public service, in education, in housing. Francis (Frank) Martineau Lupton made his mark in the transforming work of slum clearance, helping to lift the city out of Victorian darkness and squalor. But alongside his public and professional work, he had to endure, like so many others, the unsparing personal tragedies of the First World War. He had a comfortable, favoured childhood: first at Potternewton Hall, a handsome Queen Anne house, long demolished, and then at ‘Beechwood’, an impressive mansion (now offices) set in parkland in Elmete Lane, Roundhay. His father Francis was a partner in the family wool business, while his mother Fanny was active in various social causes, particularly women’s education; her aunt was the writer Harriet Martineau, and this family connection gave Frank his second name. He had three younger brothers, all destined to play a part in the city’s life. After study at Leeds Grammar School, he went on to Trinity College, Cambridge, which had just opened its doors to non-conformists like him. Frank joined the family business, William Lupton & Sons, at Whitehall Mills, and in his spare time served in the volunteer Leeds Rifles. In 1880, when he was 32, he married Harriet Davis, daughter of the vicar of St John’s Church, Roundhay, near his home. Five children followed, three sons and two daughters, and they moved to a new, handsome house, ‘Rockland’, at the top of St Mary’s Road, Newton Park, Chapeltown, built on part of the Lupton estate. But tragedy struck in 1892 when Harriet, just after the birth of their second daughter, caught influenza and died. Frank never remarried. A fearsome housekeeper looked after the house and his five children until his daughters could take over. Frank entered local politics and was elected a Councillor and then Alderman. He had a particular interest in the housing and welfare of the poor, and as a follower of the social reformer Octavia Hill believed ardently in the need to improve and regenerate inner city

areas of working class housing. For 10 years from 1896 he chaired the Council’s Unhealthy Areas Committee, set up with new powers to tackle the ‘evil legacy’ of the Leeds slums, breeding grounds for disease and death. Its first major scheme was to clear the notorious York Street and Quarry Hill areas, with their crumbling, dank yards. Inspections had to be made, prices agreed, tenants moved out, the rotting buildings demolished, rehousing organised – almost four thousand buildings were cleared. Frank led the action, and promoted other more modest schemes, involving selective demolition to create light, air and open spaces, and the regeneration of existing still usable housing. He opposed the Council’s proposal to build flats (‘tenements’) for rehousing and this disagreement triggered his resignation as chairman, but he continued as a member, and later chaired the Council’s Improvement and Finance committees – a long record of dedicated public service. In 1914 his daughter Olive married a Leeds solicitor, Richard Middleton – a union which has famously linked the family story to the ancestry of the Duchess of Cambridge. But this happy event was overshadowed by the outbreak of war. All three of Frank’s sons went to the Front. One by one they were killed in action: Maurice, his middle son, in the trenches of Lille in 1915; Lionel, the youngest, at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, having returned to the Front after being wounded; and Francis, his eldest son, in early 1917, after an agonising wait when he had been declared missing. All three are
buried in France. Frank, a quiet, unassuming man, was said to have borne his losses stoically, but the light had gone out of his life. After the war he let his house ’Rockland’ at a nominal rent for use as a home for the children of soldiers and sailors lost in the war (it is used now as a NHS centre), and moved with his daughter to a smaller house. He died soon after, in 1921, and was buried at St John’s Church, Roundhay – now a sad place, desolate and barricaded. It was said at his funeral that he had ‘brought sunshine to the fetid slums of Leeds’, but his own life lay in shadow.

Dino Jaws - the Natural History Museum Exhibition - will open at New Dock Hall, Leeds, on Tuesday 3rd June and will run until Sunday 7th September.
The exhibition is coming to Leeds direct from the Hong Kong Science Museum where it was part of a larger display called ‘Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs’ and attracted well over half a million visitors. This spectacular exhibition brings together intriguing fossil evidence, fun interactive exhibits, fascinating scientific insights and the ten most lifelike and spectacular animatronics you have ever seen, to explore the sometimes gruesome, and often disgusting, subject of dinosaurs and their food! At New Dock Hall, visitors will find themselves stepping back millions of years in time, and walking straight into a feeding frenzy of hungry dinosaurs – from slow moving vegetarians like the Iguanodon, to fierce, agile flesh eaters like the terrifying Tyrannosaurus

Rex (watch out for his roar!). One large scene has two Velociraptors devouring the carcass of a Protoceratops with their grasping hands, climbing claws and teeth for ripping flesh! “We are delighted to have secured this popular exhibition”, said James Vincent, Managing Director of New Dock Hall. “There is always fantastic interest in anything dinosaur related. Everyone I have spoken to
immediately says: ‘we’ll be there’! “June – September is a peak period, covering the long Summer holidays. So, we are looking forward to welcoming children and adults of all ages to what promises to be a great day out.” Dino Jaws combines fun interactive exhibits with scientific insights. The spectacular animatronics will show visitors everything paleontologists know about what dinosaurs had for dinner! Using the same techniques as scientists, you can become a dino-detective and study dinosaur jaws, claws, guts and even a huge mound of dung piled high behind the plant-eating Euoplocephalus. The exhibition is aimed at school groups and families with children aged seven and older, with some activities aimed at children aged four to six. It will be open daily from 3rd June - 7th September, 10am - 6pm. Advance ticket prices are £5.95 per person, £22 for a family of four, £4.75 for groups, and children aged three or under go free. Have you noticed that authors have been coming out of the woodwork in North Leeds? It used to be that having your manuscript turned down by literary agents spelt the end to any dream of publication. Now it is possible for anyone to publish electronically, and even bring out your work in printed book form, without significant capital outlay. Neil Ashcroft and Pat Gerwat are the latest authors to take this route, having just self-published their own, very different, literary efforts. Pat married Michael Gerwat, a blind musician and piano tuner in 1988. Within a year he suffered a serious hearing loss and soon became completely deaf. What is the world like if you are totally deaf and blind? How do you communicate? How do you survive? Michael and Pat have written ‘Touch Me Please’ to answer these questions and tell the story of his life. Devastated by the onset of deafness, Michael looks back on his childhood, education and successful career including working with many famous rock bands like Elton John, U2, Bob Geldof, Tears for Fears, and talks of his favourite band, Genesis. He expresses his grief at the loss of his beloved music. Pat describes what it was like when he lost his hearing, and their struggle to build a meaningful life for Micheal. In those early, dark days they were lovingly supported by their friends and the Quaker community at Adel. Although there are moments of intense
May_2014_Area_A.indd 12
sadness there’s much humour too, and Michael’s indomitable spirit shines through. Pat admired the courage with which he faced his difficulties, and felt it was a tale that people would find uplifting.
Neil writes as Russell Croft Although Neil’s work is fictional, it is based on the real life story of someone who also suffered from considerable handicaps in his passage through life. Writing as Russell Croft, Neil has published ‘Bring Him in Mad’, a historical novel based on the William Windham Lunacy Trial of 1861/2. Windham, the eccentric young squire of Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk, was subjected to this public inquisition into his sanity by his aristocratic relatives, who abhorred his marriage to Agnes
Willoughby, a famous society courtesan. Neil’s book brings to life the principal characters involved in the affair and charts the twists and turns of a trial that was extensively covered in the press and which gripped public attention for weeks. Though often humorous, the book is a serious reminder of the relationship between madness and morality, which is as relevant today as it was in Victorian times. Both titles are available on Amazon, in Kindle and print editions, at a modest price.

Drawing up a programme for a theatre like West Yorkshire Playhouse must be both tremendously exciting and terrifying! James Brining’s choices have provided us with a superb programme, combining classic with contemporary and traditional with wildly innovative, whilst aiming to connect more with the community, to be rooted in the North but never losing sight of the wider picture. When James considered looking at the work of one writer from different perspectives and angles, someone who had a relationship with the city, but would not seem parochial, Alan Bennett seemed the natural choice. Choosing which pieces to include was difficult. This selection is a small part of a major canon of Alan’s work, a celebration of and tribute to the life, times and work of Leeds’ most successful dramatist. Having read a lot of Alan’s work, James was drawn to ‘Enjoy’. “It’s a play I didn’t know very well”, he said. “It throws up surprises, challenges expectations. It’s hilarious and quite dark, funny on the surface, but disturbing underneath. It doesn’t necessarily fit his reputation – which doesn’t always respect his work or his view of the world. “We are the first theatre outside London to stage ‘Enjoy’. Although it was written over 30 years ago, it feels like a play written for now, exploring how we assimilate into contemporary culture. Intrinsically it is about being from the ‘North’ and how you carry that in you for your life.”
May_2014_Area_A.indd 14
Set in the 1980s, ‘Enjoy’ is an idiosyncratic examination of northern working-class life. The poetry of everyday life starkly contrasts with the bitter reality of old age and the complexity of moving on. The cast includes Marlene Sidaway, Philip Martin Brown (Waterloo Road), and Sian Reese Williams (Emmerdale). The Alan Bennett Season also features his Untold Stories: ‘Hymn’ and ‘Cocktail Sticks’; three short plays from his wonderful ‘Talking Heads’ series; and the smash-hit musical ‘Betty Blue Eyes’ which is based on the screenplay of Alan’s ‘Private Function’. There will also be a raft of things going on both alongside and after the season. The short plays are perfect for taking out into the community and will be performed in several areas around the city. A photographic exhibition will feature premieres of Alan’s work, and a new play ‘Nine Lives’ by Zodwa Nyoni and set in Armley, will fill the ‘A Play, A Pie and A Pint’ slot from 27th – 31st May. The Alan Bennett Season at West Yorkshire Playhouse runs from 19th May – 5th July.

For the last year, a group of Leeds artists has investigated the city from the outside in, developing ‘365 Leeds Stories’, a participatory arts project. The project began online in 2012, when local storyteller Matthew Bellwood began documenting the city as a series of tweets released over 365 days. The tweets told stories of the city in 140 characters – recounting fragments of conversations overheard that day and little known facts about the city. Since last September, Matthew has worked with theatre-maker Alison Andrews and seven groups of people from all over Leeds, recording sights and sounds, following routes taken through the city, places of happiness or discomfort, or of unrealised potential. People’s memories of Leeds as it used to be have been recorded, together with their thoughts about the city today, and

People’s memories of Leeds as it used to be have been recorded, together with their thoughts about the city today
their hopes and fears for the future. Working in partnership with Leeds Library and Information Service, Leeds Museums and Galleries, East Leeds FM, three local primary schools and Pyramid of Arts, they have made a series of maps of Leeds, which describe the city in myriad ways. Leeds has been recorded in song, embroidered in cloth, imagined in shadows and written as stories. They have also worked with nine other local artists - including a choir leader, composer, graphic and textile artists, shadow puppeteer, photographer and scenographer. From Sunday 4th – Thursday 22nd May, some of the stories and maps will form the basis of an exhibition in The Arts Space, Leeds Central Library, Calverley Street. It will be presented as a walk through a labyrinth – who knows what’s waiting around the corner!

Milestone for Orchestra’s Conductor
Photo: Chris Midgley Martin Binks conducted his first concert with Leeds Symphony Orchestra in May 1970 and now, on Saturday 17th May at St. Chad`s Church, Far Headingly, he will conduct his 300th concert with the orchestra! The programme is an exciting one and features the renowned guitarist Craig Ogden who will play the Villa-Lobos Guitar Concerto. Craig, a close friend of Martin’s, has played with the orchestra on numerous occasions. His first concert with the LSO was in 1994, so this occasion will mark the twentieth anniversary. Also featured is ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’ by Copland and ‘The Planets’ by Gustav Holst. This work requires a huge orchestra similar In size to the one required for Richard Strauss’ ‘Alpine Symphony’, which the orchestra played at St. Chad’s in 2011. St. Chad’s is a regular concert venue for the orchestra and rehearsals are held there on Monday evenings, following the recent closure of the West Park Centre. The concert starts at 7.30pm. Keyworth Building, University of Leeds, and showcases the scope of the archive by presenting costume and textiles from all the countries featured in ULITA’s collections. None of the items selected have been displayed since the opening in 2004. The exhibition highlights some of the fascinating donors’ stories – including the adventurous Professor Barker, who brought together one of ULITA’s finest collections of nineteenth century Chinese textiles; and the amazing embroiderer Louisa Pesel, whose work was inspired by her extensive travels. ULITA has its origins in a university research collection brought together in the early twentieth century. With substantial recent additions, this exhibition provides an opportunity to view the diversity of motifs, symbols, patterns, techniques and constructions found in the world of textiles. Countries represented include Britain, Turkey, France, Hungary, Greece, Denmark, Moldova, Romania, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Iran, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Japan, China, Peru and Mexico.

‘Voices of Asia’, a new gallery showcasing Asian culture and Leeds’ links with the continent, recently opened at Leeds City Museum. It celebrates the sights, sounds, diversity and culture of Asia and the different Asian communities that make up the thriving multi-cultural city today. The new gallery is the first major gallery refresh since the museum opened in 2008 and replaces the ‘Out of Africa’ gallery. The displays, which have been planned in partnership with the Asian community, will remain in place for around five years, but will change annually to reflect different projects, themes and world faiths. Developed with organisations like South Asian Arts, Leeds Hindu Mandir, Hamara, Jamyang Buddhist Centre, Leeds Asian Blind Association and Shantona, the

Theatre of the Dales takes to the road again this May with Shakespeare’s rumbustious comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor.
It’s said that Queen Elizabeth wanted to see Falstaff in love. And Shakespeare obliged. However, fat old Falstaff is clearly in love only with himself. And when he tries to seduce two wives at once just for their money, the women soon send him packing - in a laundry basket bound for the Thames!

Not one to name drop, but when Marti Pellow called us recently……..! The Wet Wet Wet star was so delighted to be playing Leeds Grand Theatre again. He played a highly successful gig there just last year. “I love Leeds Grand”, he told me. “It’s a fantastic theatre and you really feel the love for the building from the audience.” He returns this year in a very different guise – that of Che Guevara in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Evita’. Tim Rice was a real Wet Wet Wet fan and approached Marti in 2005 to appear in the musical ‘Chess’. “It was a bit of a departure from what I had been doing, but I love their work – wonderful words and melodies and great accessibility.” In addition to Chess, Marti

has also appeared in The Witches of Eastwick, Jekyll & Hyde, Chicago and Blood Brothers. He is now so enamoured with musical theatre he is busy writing several musicals of his own! One of these is based in the 20s, another ‘Parcel of Rogues’ is based on a Scottish folk song whose lyrics are taken from a Robert Burns poem of 1791, deriding those members of the Parliament of Scotland who signed the Act of Union. He never stops writing. On top of that, Wet Wet Wet are coming out to play again over the Summer – they may all go their separate ways but this group of childhood friends can’t resist getting back together to perform for old and new fans.

Anne Aitken from Bramhope recently won Lorraine’s ‘Taste Off’, part of the Lorraine programme on ITV, and the prize was the opportunity to have her wonderful Ginger and Orange Cherubs on the patisserie counter at Waitrose supermarkets across Britain! A keen home baker, Anne, a nurse at Street Lane Practice, Roundhay, applied to the Lorraine Taste Off competition when she saw it advertised on the Lorraine show. She knew just the recipe – a firm family favourite she had made for years with her grandma, mother and her two sons. Her recipe was shortlisted, impressing the judges, including actress Debbie Rush who plays

café assistant Anna Windass in Coronation Street, and family cook Alex Hollywood. In the semi-final Anne was one of only three bakers to be chosen as a finalist. The cherubs are a type of Rascal – a cross between a rock cake, scone and a biscuit. The recipe was passed down from her grandma and is in her mother’s recipe collection, which she started in 1947. It has been refined over the years and today suits her family of gingerholics! As you eat a cherub, the flavours hit you bit by bit. First you taste the ginger and spice. This is followed by orange from fresh chunky orange zest. Raisins and apricots provide additional texture and flavour.

Guiseley and District Lions Club is holding its fourth Charity Beer Festival at Coopers Bar, Guiseley, from Friday 16th – Sunday 18th May. The theme is ‘Le Tour De Beer’. Twenty four real ales from the Yorkshire Grand Depart region will be available, along with a choice of wine and cider. Local businesses are sponsoring the beers and all proceeds will go to local worthy causes. Last year, the event raised over £4,500 and the main charity supported was The Callum Hall Trust. Callum, a former pupil of St Mary’s Menston, contracted a rare spinal infection, which has left him paralysed. He was able to
purchase an ‘Easy Stand’ –a piece of equipment that helps him to stand. It is hoped that this equipment will help to establish new connections between his brain and his legs. Wharfedale Scout Sailing Centre also benefitted and was able to purchase twenty junior Crewsaver buoyancy aids.
The main charity this year is Wesley’s Wish Trust. Wes Knight of Guiseley was born at just 31 weeks. After a month in intensive care a scan revealed that part of his brain had been damaged. As a result he has cerebral palsy and is unlikely to walk without specialist surgery. Wesley’s Wish was set up to raise funds to get him to the USA for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) – an operation which has helped over 2,000 children with Wes’s condition to walk. Tickets (£5) include a souvenir glass, two half pints and a programme. Additional beers will be priced at £2.50 a pint. Sessions are from 7-11pm each evening, 1-4pm on Saturday and 12 -3pm Sunday. Tickets can be purchased from Coopers or www.wegottickets.com For more information visit, www.guiseley. co.uk/lions

I have lost count of the number of times we have driven past El Bareto on Gledhow Valley Road and thought ‘must eat there’ and promptly forgotten again. Well, we finally made it! And, having been there once, it’s a dead cert that we will go back!
El Bareto is a little Spanish oasis in North Leeds, regularly frequented by the local Spanish community. As we pushed our way into the bar we felt as though we had gatecrashed a private party! It was just abuzz. We resisted joining in and made our way downstairs to the restaurant, which was quieter. El Bareto, very much a family affair, has been operating from this little corner of North Leeds for over nine years and has a lovely friendly vibe. The décor is very ‘rustic taverna’ with dark, homemade tables and benches, terracotta rough plaster walls and flickering candles. We were immediately approached by Shaun and given a quick run down of how things worked and how many dishes to order – it’s so easy to get carried away when you’re
May_2014_Area_A.indd 30
talking tapas. We were advised to order between four and six dishes between us, which was not easy, given the choice. But we were soon diving into Padron Peppers - small peppers briefly salted and quickly deep-fried. Then there were fabulous grilled king prawns; ratatouille on a perfectly cooked fried egg; and chorizo that was cooked in cider and oh so good. An amazing monkfish special that was apparently quick fried and then steamed, with wonderful m e l t i n g ,
You might have thought we would stop there, but no – we had to try the homemade deliciously creamy white chocolate cheesecake
caramelised onions and fresh asparagus on the side followed and, finally, duck with caramelized onions and cheese – so rich and tangy. This was all washed down with an excellent house Rioja. You might have thought we would stop there, but no – we had to try the homemade deliciously creamy white chocolate cheesecake with Baileys and a beautifully light crème caramel. Then I espied an array of dishes arriving at the table next to us, felt decidedly jealous and wanted to start all over again! As they noticed us coveting their food they jokingly invited us to join in and I almost took them up on it! All in all a lovely evening – great, relaxed atmosphere; friendly, efficient service; and lovely food. What more could you ask for? The dishes we chose ranged from about £5 to £12.95 (the monkfish). The meal (excluding wine) cost about £58. Now, having finally made it across the threshold into this little Spanish enclave, that one visit was definitely not enough! I should also mention that there are regular music evenings, which add to the authentic Spanish atmosphere and, if you want to get even further into Spanish culture, there are Spanish classes on Monday evenings! They aim to avoid as many A roads as possible and take to country roads and back lanes, starting in Leeds and passing through North Yorkshire, County Durham, on to the Scottish borders, through the Lake District, then back across to the North East, down to Scarborough and then back to Leeds. “The main reason we are doing this is because my Nan passed away last year after a twelve year battle with this cruel disease”, said Lee. “My wife also lost her grandma through the same illness a few years ago. “We have already held a successful coffee morning, which included special guest speaker Rupert Stroud, who was featured in North Leeds Life.” Lee and Faye aim to raise £3,000 to purchase a PET Scan. They would love people to sponsor them so they can reach their goal. For further information, visit www. fltrally14.co.uk

Betty Williams celebrated her 100th birthday at home on April 8th, surrounded by her family and friends. Originally from South Wales, Betty and her husband Monty moved to West Park in 1946 after the second of the two world wars, which they both lived through. She has loved living in Yorkshire ever since!
“Interest in the choir continues to grow“, said Deborah Fletcher, Cookridge Primary`s music co-ordinator and choir leader. “Since Christmas we have had various requests to perform, as well as interest in collaborative performances. It is a wonderful opportunity for the children and older members of the community to spend time together.” The choir, which consists of children from Cookridge Primary and people from the community, including members from OPAL (Older People`s Action in the

The Choir meets from 3-4pm at the school during term time. If you are interested in joining, (regardless of your singing ability!), or are interested in the choir performing at a venue in the Cookridge area, then please contact Mrs Fletcher through the school on 0113 386 2500.
Betty’s first job was with Lloyds Bank in Swansea, but on her marriage at the age of 21 it was then bank policy that she left to become a housewife. This was a role she was to enjoy for many years! A keen caravanner, she and Monty toured extensively in the UK and Ireland, and they were enthusiastic members of Headingley Golf Club as well as avid bridge players. Betty is shown with members of her family, some of whom travelled from Spain to be with her on her special day.

Plans to mark the 40th anniversary of Leeds Concord Interfaith Fellowship are underway, thanks to support from local Councillors Jane Dowson, Sharon Hamilton and their colleagues who provided £300 in MICE money. Concord is the longest running interfaith organisation in the city and one of the oldest in the country. A wide variety of projects and events is planned to celebrate. One of these will be led by Leeds Women of Faith, who are encouraging women across the city to come together to create a commemorative textile banner, to celebrate not only the anniversary, but also Leeds multi-faith and multi-cultural diversity. The project will last a year with workshops being held across

The Councillors went along to a recent session to have a go with some of the women taking part. “I am excited to see this project with Concord and Leeds Women of Faith develop over the next few months”, said Councillor Sharon Hamilton. “It will bring together women from a variety of backgrounds to work together and learn from each other.”

It was with great sadness that we received the news of Clive Fox’s death recently. A stunned Councillor Barry Anderson told us: “If anyone in Bramhope wanted to know which City Council department to contact, or something about the village, the solution was always ‘Ask Clive’. If he didn’t know, he’d soon find out. He was equipped with a wealth of local knowledge. “Clive, Les Carter and I played an important role in running the city council when the Conservatives were in coalition from 2004 – 2010. Following that, we worked in the Ward together and I feel we complemented each other’s work. “I have received a number of messages from colleagues on Council who served with Clive on various committees, all of them saying how much they enjoyed being on committee with him.” Clive had lived in Bramhope for over 55 years, attending Bramhope School and then Moorlands. After graduating from Manchester University, he qualified as a chartered accountant and spent most of his career in local industry. He had been a city councilor since 2000 and a member of both Bramhope and Arthington parish councils for 25 years – the longest serving councilor on both of them. In fact, he had been a councilor most of his adult life - initially on the West Yorkshire County Council. Clive was also a long standing environmental campaigner and former chairman of the Leeds Branch of Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), and served on the local Access Forum which deals with issues affecting access to the countryside. He was a member of the Council’s

Development Plans Panel, which takes an overview of planning and land use, and the Corporate Audit & Governance Committee, and was a member of the Council’s Health & Wellbeing and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Board, taking the lead on community safety issues for our area. He served on a number of charitable trusts supporting young people and was a former governor of Leeds College of Technology. He also served on the Schools’ Organisation Committee, handling the difficult issue of school closures and amalgamations. For at least the past five years Clive had written a column for North Leeds Life, which we looked forward to receiving and thousands of readers
enjoyed reading every month. He had a wicked sense of humour and people really appreciated his unique take on the various activities of the Council. He will be sorely missed.
Colin Robertson from Bramhope writes: I would like to express my sympathies and shock at the death of Councillor Clive Fox. I had known Clive for over 40 years as friend and colleague on Bramhope & Carlton Parish Council. His role as both Parish Councillor and Leeds City Councillor was an enormous support during my seven and a half year tenure as the PC’s Chairman, particularly regarding planning. He helped me in carrying out a lot of reforms and improvements to the village properties and environment, including the setting up of the Bramhope Village Property Trust to buy land for the village. He worked tirelessly for the residents, which was reflected in his repeated re-election as a ward councillor for Leeds. He was also a walking reference book on Bramhope’s history, which was superbly deployed in several history walks during village festivals. Clive’s commitment to Bramhope was unfailing and he will be greatly missed. My wife and I extend our deepest sympathies to Diane and their family.

We all want to build a better future for Headingley. The Ward faces a broad range of challenges over the next twenty years. The population structure is changing; what will happen to the students? How do we attract more families? How will that affect housing? How will that change the social and environmental situation? What will be the impact on public transport? Our Inner City location presents challenges of congestion and poor air quality, for example. As for landlords, well, let’s just say there are too many who are not the best custodians of their properties!

These are big questions with no easy answer. However, we do have a useful tool – a Neighbourhood Plan. This is a way of shaping our shared destiny; a way of channeling development and answering questions such as ‘what green space and where’? How will we walk and cycle through Headingley? What sort of housing tenure types do we want? How do we make sure Headingley is the cleaner, greener place we all want to see? The Plan is developed by a Neighbourhood Forum, made up of people who want to be involved. I see it as a way to build a sustainable Headingley and if you do too, then get in touch!

Anyone who has lodged an objection or a letter of support is allowed to speak at the meeting. A large number of residents groups all along the proposed routes, plus the Environment Agency, local businesses in Headingley and West Park, plus a number of others have all submitted objections. The Inquiry will continue for six weeks (excluding bank holidays and half term), with objectors and supporters presenting their cases. www.barryanderson.yourcllr.com Twitter @barryanderson19

Around 1840 a large lake, known as Eccup Reservoir, was built by Leeds Water Works Company on land donated by the Earl of Harewood. The Seven Arches Aqueduct was built to carry water across the Meanwood

Valley from the newly built reservoir to Headingley, to provide clean drinking water to the rapidly growing population in Leeds. The Seven Arches Aquaduct.
The attractive, curved bridge soon became a wellloved feature of the valley. But it was inadequate and two large water mains were buried, one on each side of the aqueduct, which was taken out of service in 1866, twenty-four years after it was built. The bridge was a popular walkway, children would play
on it and one little girl’s proud boast was that she had crawled from one end to the other through the piping. It became a Grade II listed structure but in due course it started to lean. Civil engineers decided that it was at risk of collapse. The lean became almost as bad as Pisa’s famous tower. The decision to stabilise the bridge was made, and many ideas were discussed. Because it was a listed structure, work could not affect its appearance, and the water mains at each side had to be protected. The footpath, part of the Dales Way, had to be

kept open too, as it was a public footpath, and access to the site was via a narrow track. The engineers had difficulty finding solid rock, and the fact that the bridge was curved was an extra problem. It was decided to use cables, which pass through from end to end. The scheme received the Historic Bridge Award in 2000.

The Adel Neighbourhood Forum has now received formal designation, which means that the specific details of the geographical area to be covered by the Forum has been agreed. It is the first non-parish council in the Leeds City Council area to receive such designation.
Supporting Communities in Neighbourhood Planning led by ‘Locality’ has confirmed that the Forum will receive advice and a grant to purchase reports on key issues such as highways, the environment and housing needs. These will be central to the draft and final Neighbourhood Plan. The next step is to produce a draft Neighbourhood Plan which will be the subject

of a Community Engagement exercise to enable residents and other interested parties to have their say. At the same time our six focus groups on Housing, Traffic, Education, Environment, Community services and Business will be finalising their reports. And, there will be on-going communication via www. adelneighbourhoodforum.co.uk. A recent meeting on the issue of education underlined the fact that existing schools are full to capacity and the demand resulting from housing developments cannot be met by the existing primary schools. Leeds Children’s Services have asked the Forum to work with them on an ‘outcomes-based’ exercise. If a new school is to be built, should the developers pay for it and where should it be? Residents feel that if the infrastructure is not in place, the development is not ‘sustainable’ and should not go ahead. Meanwhile, David Wilson Homes (DWH) are pressing ahead with their proposal to build 177 homes opposite Adel Parish Church on Church
Lane. Leeds City Council has now received a planning application for 88 homes on the upper northern field. The proposed access is off Otley Road. Residents question why the application is being brought at this time when the site allocations have not yet been decided. This year will be critical in terms of future developments and residents’ responses to them. If you have any comments on the above, or on any other issues, please contact me or visit www.adelneighbourhoodforum. co.uk

Neighbourhood planning was made possible by the Localism Act 2011 and, so far, Leeds is way ahead of other towns and cities, with some two dozen Neighbourhood Plans designated to date and more on the way. One of these is now Headingley!
We have submitted an application to the Council for a Neighbourhood Area: our proposal is focussed on Headingley Town Centre, and extends from Beckett’s Park to Hyde Park, between Shaw Lane and Victoria Road. We have also applied to set up a Neighbourhood Forum, including local residents, businesses and councillors. Neighbourhood Plans enable people to prepare
planning policies for local areas. Our aim in Headingley is to provide a space where the residents, businesses and organisations, and local councillors, can work together to build a confident, sustainable community, to improve the wellbeing and quality of life for everyone who lives and works here. It will develop trust and understanding between people and groups in the area, which are often perceived as having conflicting interests, and enable them, as a community, to shape their own destiny, creating a sustainable, mixed and inclusive community. Our application is now open to public consultation. For details, go to http://www. leeds.gov.uk/council/Pages/

In May, Headingley sees its first ‘Festival of Ideas’ – a series of community-led events to inspire debate and discussion, with the theme ‘Cycles’. The Festival is all about creative ideas that may not necessarily lead to anything (although some might). The main purpose is to tap into the joy of ideas, debate and discussion, and to appeal to the wide variety of people who live in Headingley, and to all age groups. The Festival is the brainchild of Richard Crossley, recently awarded an OBE for services to neighbourhoods

As things stand, Leeds City Council will put £65m from its resources towards the trolleybus (NGT). There is an allowance for overrun, but no clear plans as to how to deal with any increase in costs above the planned spend. Should the capital costs exceed budget, the Council and the Integrated Transport Authority will have to find additional funds from council tax payers, or change the specification of the scheme. Should the Public Enquiry allow the scheme to go ahead, NGT predicts that it will make a loss in its first few years. It is only when NGT is well established that it is expected to make an annual surplus of £3m, with revenues of £20.6m and running costs of £17.6m.The annual revenue
of £20.6m is uncertain as both demand and fare levels cannot be predicted. There are no guarantees that commuters will use the trolleybus, or that bus companies won’t cut fares to retain customers. Also, running costs may increase as energy costs rise, and maintenance costs could be higher than expected – remember this is likely to be a one-off designed trolley bus vehicle. A reduction in revenues of 15% and an increase in costs of 15% would result in an annual loss of £2.7m. No surprise that council tax payers will be expected to pick up any bill. Improved public transport could achieve similar benefits by introducing smart cards and improving buses and bus stops, all without the monetary risks associated with the construction and operation the trolleybus scheme. But it is not just the finances of the scheme that cause concern. In terms of value for money, the scheme does not meet its own and the Council’s objectives – It does not serve areas of multiple deprivation; It does not serve areas of regenerative development or land use change; It reduces air quality; It even reduces cycling and walking on the
route by about 7%. Most telling perhaps is that it will increase congestion. However, commuters will have the time to admire the various conservation areas whilst queuing in their cars – provided these are still worth looking at after the road widening and tree loss. Seeds and Seedlings Tender seedlings from March and April sowings will soon be ready to put outside but don’t be tempted to do this before the end of the month when all risk of frost has passed. You can start to acclimatise plants to outdoor life by leaving them out during the day and bringing in at night for a week or two prior to moving them to their new homes. This applies to things like tomato, courgette and Summer bedding plants whether home grown or bought at a garden centre.

have plummeted by over a third in the last ten years and one of the factors contributing to this decline is tidy fenced in gardens. They need a much larger area to roam than you would imagine, the average range for a hedgehog in an urban area being about 500 gardens! One of the simplest steps we can take to help hedgehogs is to link gardens in a neighbourhood by making a small hole in shared boundaries so that the creatures can roam freely. A hole that is just 13cm square at or near ground level is big enough for hedgehogs to pass, enabling them to find shelter, food and mates. Keeping the Rest Looking its Best Herbaceous perennials grow rapidly this month, so continue to support them with twiggy sticks or plant supports. Late flowering varieties can be given the ‘Chelsea Chop’ towards the end of the month – i.e. reduce their height by one third to make stronger, bushier plants with more flowers. Good subjects for the treatment include Helenium, Echinacea, Rudbeckia and upright varieties of Sedum. Fading Spring bulbs can be deadheaded but leave the foliage in place to feed the bulb for next year’s flowers and remove it when it begins to turn yellow.

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON Symbolic of Spring and Summer days is the Swallow, now arrived for the breeding season. Glossy and fork-tailed with thin tail streamers, swallows are blue-black with a red throat and forehead and white underneath. Swallows prefer cultivated lowlands. Insects, their favourite food, are caught on the wing as, typically, they swoop low among grazing cattle in elegant fluid flight. Farmyard barns and sheds are a characteristic nesting site, but they also frequent isolated barns high in the Dales as well as domestic garages and outbuildings in and near villages. Their cheerful, loud, liquid ‘switswit-swit’ call enlivens these

locations. Sociable birds, they gather to feed over pastures and lakes and in Autumn assemble in twittering flocks, perching in long rows on wires before migrating. Though still a relatively common bird, numbers vary annually, perhaps depending
on Winter conditions in South Africa and experience on migration routes. Counts are holding up well and swallows occur throughout Britain, except on the highest ground and in the main built-up areas. Of all Summer migrants to our shores, the swallow has the widest distribution.

York Gate Reopens York Gate Garden, on Back Church lane in Adel, has reopened for the 2014 season. Parts of the garden, which is run by national horticulture charity Perennial, have been replanted and refreshed as part of the garden’s ongoing programme of restoration.
Help Save Our Bees! Friends of the Earth have been creating a buzz about bees, hosting events to celebrate their brilliance, and successfully persuading the government to draw up a Bee Action Plan to save Britain’s bees before it’s too late.

ver the Winter, the White Garden has been replanted and the mature beech hedges surrounding the garden restored. York Gate is widely recognised as one of the most innovative small gardens of its period and contains 14 distinct ‘outdoor rooms’ each with its own character. The garden received a Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Award last year. “It is a challenge refurbishing a mature garden in the modest space we have at York Gate”, said Head Gardener Martin Walker. “Thanks to a very mild winter, we have been able to get more done than expected. We have replanted the perennial borders in the White

Garden and plan to introduce annuals to give a longer and more sustained display.” As well as new planting, visitors can expect to see fantastic displays of Spring bulbs, as well as new plantings of primulas and hostas in The Dell. These will be followed in late Spring by displays in the Cutting and Kitchen Gardens. York Gate is owned and managed by horticulture trade charity Perennial, which this year celebrates its 175th anniversary. They have big plans to make Leeds a bee-friendly city. Wildflowers help create habitats for bees because they feed on their pollen, and some species nest in the grasses and flower stems. The Friends are launching a number of planting projects to transform unused outdoor spaces into lush wildflower meadows, and you can get involved! Visit www.foe.org.uk and request your free Bee Saver Kit, complete with seeds, planting tips and a guide on how to identify bees. Or, go along to one of their regular meetings on the first Tuesday of the month at Pomegranate Café, Great George Street from 6.30pm.

A Fruitful Community Project A previously unused patch of Meanwood grassland is to be turned into a wonderful community garden and orchard. Councillors Sharon Hamilton, Rebecca Charlwood, Alex Sobel and colleagues on the Inner East Area Committee have provided £1,200 for the establishment of the Meanwood Community Orchard, which will be organised by Transition Meanwood, a community-led group helping to improve the local area by running green projects. All of the trees have been purchased by ward members, and planted by volunteers. The Council’s Parks & Countryside Service also assisted in setting up the project. “Transition Meanwood have done a fantastic job creating this

The renowned kora player Toumani Diabaté recently recorded an album of duets with his son Sidiki, the instrument’s emerging star, and they are playing at the Howard Assembly Room on Friday 6th June.
heir album is a dialogue conducted through the kora, the 21-string West African harp that the Diabaté dynasty has elevated to iconic status. Descended from a line of griots - custodians of the ancient oral traditions of West Africa’s Mandé people - Toumani and Sidiki are significant names in the annals of African music. Toumani’s father recorded the first ever kora album in 1970, unwrapping the instrument’s

potential as a virtuosic instrument. Toumani has taken it further, weaving together bass lines, ancient melodies and astonishing improvisations. He has collaborated with the likes of Ali Farka Touré, Taj Mahal, Herbie Hancock, Damon Albarn and Bjork, and has built an impressive collection of fans, including President Barack Obama, who chose Toumani’s collaboration with Taj Mahal as his alltime favourite album. Sidiki moves things forward again. Voted Mali’s best beat maker in 2013, Sidiki runs his own recording studio and, alongside rapper ‘Iba One’, is one half of the country’s premier hip-hop duo. “Yes I’m a hip-hop artist, but I love and respect my roots as
a kora player”, he said. “I want to know more. This is my chance to learn directly from my father.” Toumani and Sidiki play with verve and attack, groove, wit, swing and bounce, and exquisite intimacy. “We’re not going backwards and trying to play how my father and grandfather did”, said Toumani. “We have to do it our way. We’re modern griots, we live in the city, we’re connected to the world.”

UNDER THE SKIN DIRECTED BY: JONATHAN GLAZER STARRING: : SCARLETT JOHANSSON, JEREMY MCWILLIAMS, LYNSEY TAYLOR MACKAY CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 108 MINS This fantastically strange, disorientating and utterly original picture might seem, at first glance, to share its premise with a mostly forgotten mid-90s daft Sci-Fi horror B movie called Species. Both films feature aliens in attractive female human form seductively luring men to their doom. That’s where the similarities end, however. Rest assured, Under The Skin is nothing like Species. This is a film I’ve been excited about for some time as it’s the long awaited new feature from Jonathan Glazer, director of the superb, genrewarping Sexy Beast, although an appreciation of the director’s previous work doesn’t prepare you for Under The Skin, which is nothing like Sexy Beast either. Okay, let’s just say that Under The Skin is pretty much unlike anything else out there. It’s a haunting, disturbing, creepy, sexy and unnerving piece that worms its way into your consciousness and rattles around in there making you feel odd for quite some time afterwards. With its Glasgow setting, the film manages to seem both out of this world and down to earth. Much of it is taken up with Johansson’s alien cruising the Scottish streets in a white van, on the prowl for lone men whom she ensnares and then ...

devours? Collects? Drains of life essence? As with much in the film, what occurs isn’t explicitly clear but it’s certainly unsettling. The only other main character is the enigmatic presence of a

man on a motorcycle whom we see at the opening of the film seemingly procuring a human body for the alien to inhabit. The relationship between them remains ambiguous; is he another alien guiding her way on earth? It might be he’s there to protect and clean up after her but when she allows one of her victims to escape he appears to become a threat. What the film does brilliantly is show us our world as if viewed through the alien’s eyes, making the familiar seem strange and intimidating. This is achieved through Johansson’s wonderfully otherworldly performance and Glazer’s cannily counter-intuitive direction. The camerawork is largely cinema verite, recalling the bleak and grimy socialrealist style of Mike Leigh or Ken Loach and, when observing ordinary folk in street scenes that could be any homogenised city centre in the UK, seems like a natural history documentary, lacking only a voiceover by David Attenborough. This Lo-Fi visual motif is punctuated by
15/04/2014 10:28
highly stylised, surrealistic scenes that take place in the alien’s lair, which many have called Kubrickian. Given her celebrity and sex symbol status, the casting of Johansson is a masterstroke and I doubt the film could have worked as well with anyone else in the role. The incongruity of seeing her (often filmed on hidden cameras) rendered oddly anonymous by a dark wig and tatty fake fur coat, wandering around a place much like the Merrion Centre, is bizarrely effective. The closest reference point for Under The Skin would be Nic Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth, which Glazer acknowledges as an influence, and Johansson’s alien shares an air of chillingly dispassionate detachment with David Bowie’s character in that film.
Making the alien relatable is quite a stretch, unable as she is (initially, at least) to comprehend or experience human emotion. However, perhaps due to the melancholic note that underpins her travails, we come to see more than a predatory monster and by the end we’re acutely concerned for her safety. The film has received a great deal of appreciation from critics but I can’t see it becoming widely loved by audiences as (and I’m aware this phrase may smack of cultural snobbery and condescension) it might just be too weird for most people. As for myself, Under The Skin absolutely knocked me for six and it’s one of the most unusual, beguiling and unique things I’ve seen for quite some time.

Single Review:
The Talks: Don’t Look Behind You Daniel Pearson – Escape Acts EP Escape Acts, the new EP from singer-songwriter Daniel Pearson, was released recently. The four new studio recordings follow his second album Mercury State, which earned international acclaim last year. In the last two years, which included releasing two albums, Daniel has received a string of rave press reviews, gained thousands of fans through word of mouth and Twitter, over 10,000 download sales, and received widespread airplay. His music has been played on TV shows and he has toured the UK & USA - all while maintaining an independent, DIY approach. The EP’s infectious lead single Lost My Way reboots 60s pop with sharp riffs and a stomping kick drum and showcases keen and considered songwriting and arrangement sensibilities which recall Crowded House or the countrysoul of Ryan Adams, tied together by deft lyrical skill and great production by Ed Heaton at Eiger Studios in Leeds.

It’s great to have people respond to my music and so nice to hear positive things
This new EP is a departure from his previous album, released in January 2013, which was a stark acoustic recording based around the recession. This new EP is far more positive, up-beat and pop sounding. Daniel is very prolific and is constantly writing. He is playing the Live at Leeds Festival this month, when no doubt his huge Twitter following (which seems to gain more fans by the day) will turn out in force to soak up more of the music that has been sending them into raptures! “Twitter has been really good for me”, said Daniel. ”It’s great to have people respond to my music and so nice to hear positive things. I’m so fortunate to have a job that I love and I love having that contact with people.”
This new single by 2 Tone revivalists The Talks is a jaunty slice of vintage-feeling Ska in the fine tradition of The Specials, The Beat and The Selecter et al. Choppy guitars and pleasingly swirling Hammond carry a tune with plenty of bump and bounce and more than enough “mmm chh, chh” bang for your buck. Not 100% sure about the rap breakdown that appears shortly after the midway point which, judging from the video, seem to be delivered somewhat half-heartedly, but generally Don’t Look Behind You is a tasty, upbeat, poppy skank reminiscent of the best of 70’s era Ska-Punk. There’s a propulsive energy to The Talks’ sound which suggests the band has little trouble getting a crowd moving and I’d be keen to see them live. Unfortunately, the band aren’t hitting Leeds on their upcoming UK tour but if you feel like breaking out your porkpie hat, braces and DMs and cracking on with the old two-step it might be worth making the trip to Sheffield or York to catch the guys on stage.

Countdown to Le Grand Depart The Etape du Dales Lizzie Armitstead described Yorkshire as the ‘best cycling destination in the world!’ and what better way to experience it than by taking part in the Etape du Dales? This is one of the most popular and challenging sportives in the UK and one of the country’s top ten rides. Organised as a sponsorship event by the Dave Rayner Fund, it is a day-long ride covering 112 miles (180km) of punishing terrain. The Fund, which was set up in 1995 to provide financial assistance to aspiring young riders, was named after Dave Rayner, one of Britain’s best young professional cyclists in the late 80s and early 90s, until his career was tragically cut short following his death (age 27) outside a Bradford nightclub. Everyone talks about the Etape du Tour as one of the most grueling cycle rides around, but we have been assured that parts of the Etape du Dales are every bit as difficult as the French Etape mountain stages.
Every year about 1,000 intrepid cyclists take part and it requires an excellent level of fitness, taking in as it does major climbs as well as steep and technical descents. Starting and ending in Threshfield, just outside Grassington, lovely country lanes soon give way to killer climbs – like the beast that is Buttertubs, the mightly Fleet Moss, the punishing leg to Nateby, and the climb at Tan Hill to reach the highest and possibly the most isolated pub in England. Then there’s speeding down to the Moorcock Inn, the tough climb up Garsdale Head and the endless undulations of Silverdale, not to mention other famous ascents like Mallerstang, the Coal Road, Newby Head and Halton Gill. The reward is stunning Dales scenery, the satisfaction of completing one of the hardest cyclo-sportives in the country, and raising money for a good cause - the Dave Rayner Fund. Of course, the Yorkshire Dales can be as hostile as they are beautiful. The weather can change in an instant and with very little shelter across the tops of the moors, you could find yourself in serious trouble if you’re not properly equipped. Tempted? Start training for the Etape du Dales 2015 now! For further information, contact Nigel Bishop at etapedudales@live.co.uk or visit www.daveraynerfund.co.uk Photo: Coals Rd from Garsdale to Dent. An Etape du Tour Experience! Last year, in a moment of madness, I decided to take on the Etape du Tour – a 130km leg of the Tour de France through The Alps. The cycling brand Rapha contacted me to see if I’d do it, in an attempt to encourage more women to take part. On my spikesandheels.com blog I constantly champion women in sports. I run, I box, I do Pilates, but I definitely wasn’t a cyclist, so this would be a special kind of challenge.
Pictured: Muireann Campbell
I got on my bike and started training and quickly realized, cycling was not for the faint hearted. I spent weeks thinking simply not falling off was an achievement, but at some point I realised I’d have to get serious about tackling hills - I mean, the leg of the Tour I’d be doing covered six mountains! I’m a Leeds lass but live in London, where decent hills aren’t easily accessible. It was time to make a pilgrimage to the hills of God’s Own County. I packed my bags and prepped myself for a weekend of riding, Yorkshire-style. Prior to this, my rides had consisted of a lot of distance, but no real inclines. This would be a test to see how I could handle the hills. I set out optimistically, little did I know that by the end of that day, the hills would almost break me. I found out later that some of the hills we took on that day are in some sort of ‘100 Greatest Hills of the UK’ cycling masochist manual. As I tried to ascend one, I felt pain searing through my thighs as my legs gradually got slower and slower. I felt as though I were pedaling through mud. Then my legs came to a complete stand still mid-pedal stroke. Then I started going backwards! My upper body felt so weak, I could barely hold on to the handlebars. Sweat was pouring off me from everywhere, even my shins – who sweats from their shins?! ‘This is what being close to death must feel like’, I thought to myself.
After a bit of walking, some crawling, some crying, a mini-tantrum, threatening to throw my bike in a hedge, then eventually getting back on it, I did indeed make it up that hill. Not only that, but a couple of months later, as I was on the final climb of the Etape du Tour – a brutal 16km long incline of about 20%, I thought back to that day on that Yorkshire hill that nearly broke me and thought ‘Give me your best France – you ain’t got nothin’ on Yorkshire!’ With the Tour de France starting in Yorkshire this year, it’s such a great opportunity for us to see these incredible athletes up close and personal. St Gemma’s Three Peaks Challenge!
Mob Run is Back!
St Gemma’s Hospice has teamed up with Kuta Outdoors to organise its first Three Peaks Challenge on Friday 5Th September. This year the hugely popular and successful ‘Mob Run’, the parkrun club challenge, is back!
This challenge sets out to climb Yorkshire’s highest peaks – the magnificent Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. It is suitable for beginners, as well as experienced walkers. You will be supported every step of the way, with free weekend training walks, fundraising tips, a St Gemma’s t-shirt and a talk to prepare you for the big day. The route will be fully marshalled and staff from Kuta Outdoors and St Gemma’s will be there to support and encourage you.
May_2014_Area_A.indd 62
It is hoped that the event will raise over £24,000
It’s a great opportunity to take in some of Yorkshire’s most stunning scenery while raising vital funds for your local hospice. It is hoped that the event will raise over £24,000, which will cover the cost of running the hospice for a day. Registration is £30 (nonrefundable) and each walker is asked to raise at least £250. For further details and to register, visit www. stgemmas3peaks.co.uk.
Started by Leeds parkrun, last year the event spread its wings and visited Temple Newsam, and this year it will be hosted by Roundhay parkrun on 17th May. Last year’s event was hugely popular amongst runners and brought a record attendance to Temple Newsam. The challenge is a very simple one – which athletics club can bring the most runners (Valley Striders brought 41 last year!), and which club has the fastest average runners (it was Barnsley AC in 2013). You’ll find a facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/ events/448660708598221/ parkrun organises free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone and are safe and easy to take part in. With four events in the Leeds area – Woodhouse Moor, Roundhay, Temple Newsam and Cross Flatts – around 1,000 people take part every Saturday morning. For the past five years, Sustrans has been working with the University of Leeds, Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Trinity University to promote walking and cycling. Under the banner of ‘UTravelActive’ they provide a range of practical and motivational support to help staff and students improve their health, bank balance and environmental footprint. The most visible tool on offer is the 400 plus branded bikes that you can spot all over the city. Students can hire bikes for just £50 a year, which allows them to keep fit, save
money, and never be late for lectures! There is maintenance support on both the Leeds Uni and Leeds Met Headingley campuses. Staff can also see if cycling is for them through the ‘Try Cycling’ bike loans at the universities and hospitals. With lock, lights, helmet, pannier, and
bags of support the majority of participants go on to join the increasing numbers of people enjoying cycling in Leeds. Many volunteers support Sustrans’ activities, allowing them to offer a range of extra events – from walks to cycling film nights. Their theme for 2014 is ‘Bike Belles’, featuring women-focused events and stories of women overcoming personal barriers. The Grand Départ is a huge opportunity to offer people of all abilities the help they need to get started. For more information see www.utravelactive.org.uk or Facebook

Radiotherapy Can Cure Cancer The Leeds Cancer Centre at St James’ Hospital is one of Europe’s largest cancer treatment facilities, serving

2.8 million people across the Yorkshire region.
Radiotherapy, widely used in cancer treatment, is one of its core services. Although less well known than chemotherapy, it can and does cure cancer. Second only to cancer surgery, radiotherapy is used in 40% of cases where cancer is cured, and in many of these it is the primary treatment used.
The Radiotherapy Department has become nationally and internationally recognised for pioneering radiotherapy treatment. Support from the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation and the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal has enabled the radiotherapy team to pioneer new technology and techniques in more targeted treatments, such as intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and image guided radiotherapy (IGRT). These new ways of delivering radiotherapy are transforming the lives of patients as cancer

cells are targeted more precisely, increasing cure rates. And, patients experience fewer side effects. These innovations also allow patients with potentially curable lung cancer, who previously had no treatment options, to be successfully treated using a technique called stereotactic ablative body-frame radiotherapy (SABR). Leeds has pioneered this technique and been able to offer a chance of potentially curative treatment to the people of Yorkshire and beyond. But there is still more to do to increase the number of people being cured with radiotherapy. New technology and software is expensive and cannot all be funded by the NHS. As part of the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal, a radiotherapy equipment fund has been set up. If you would like to contribute in any way, please contact Julie Owens, Radiotherapy Manager, on 0113 2067456 or julie. owens@leedsth.nhs.uk
Entry for the Ilkley Triathlon on 21st September, run by the Leeds Bradford Triathlon club, opens 1st May. Last year the event sold out in just four days and had a record number of entries. Held at the Ilkley Lido, the sprint distance course is an ideal event for beginners, with an indoor swim, scenic 15km bike ride, followed by 5km run. Last year’s race was nominated in the top three races with under 500 entries for the UK, and has been a previous winner. Now well established and in its 22nd year, it is now a fixture in the local sporting calendar. It’s a great event to participate in either as an individual or as part of a team. With multiple laps it’s perfect for supporting friends and family taking part. For more information about this year’s race visit http://lbt.org.uk/ IlkleyTriathlon.aspx or find them on facebook or twitter.

Coeliac UK Awareness Week Coeliac disease is a lifelong auto-immune disease caused by the immune system reacting to gluten - a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten, their immune system reacts by damaging the lining of the small intestine. The only way to ‘treat’ Coeliac disease is to exclude all foods with gluten ingredients and stick to a strict gluten-free diet.

Supermarkets are offering more and more products that are suitable for a gluten-free diet but Coeliac UK is asking them to go a step further and sign up to the Gluten-free Guarantee, which means having the eight core

A number of Leeds restaurants have taken up this challenge and their details can be found at www.leedscoeliacgroup.org.uk
Food shopping and eating out are particularly challenging which is why Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week (12th-18th May) is focusing on the availability of gluten-free food in stores. This year’s campaign will hopefully make it easier to source gluten-

Bramhope ‘Walk, Jog or Run’ Raises £830 It was great to see the people of the village coming together
Now in its third year, the Bramhope ‘Walk, Jog or Run a Mile’ event on the cricket field raised just over £830 for Sports Relief. It was a beautiful, crisp morning, ideal for running. The running track was marked out with paint and cones (lent by Adel Cricket Club). Nearly 40 people of all ages
took part. There were even some very young participants in pushchairs. “It was great to see the people of the village coming together, having fun, and helping a very good cause at the same time”, said Tariq Qadeer, who helped organize the event. “With the help and kindness of local people, we have raised just under £21,000 for different charities in the last six years. “Next, Team Bramhope will take part in the Leeds Half Marathon on 11th May, when we will be raising
funds for Candlelighters and a cancer hospital in Pakistan. And, in August, we are planning to do the Three Peaks challenge for the second year running. Last year 21 people from Bramhope took part – they all loved it and wanted to do it again! Anyone interested in raising money for Candlelighters and having an amazing experience, should contact me as soon as possible.” Tariq Qadeer at The Village Newsagents, Bramhope. GSAL Reclaims National Netball Title The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has reclaimed a national title last won by the school in 2012 – England Netball U16 National Schools Champions. For the second year running GSAL was represented at the national final in all three age categories – U14, U16 and U19. The U16s clinched the trophy with a hard fought 7-6 win in their final match against The Fallibroome Academy, while the U14s and U19s finished as runners up in their competitions. “It was a fantastic team effort from every member in the squad”, said Cath Johnson, head of netball at GSAL. “Winning a national competition is an unbelievable experience for the girls and having three teams in the finals is exceptional.”

Another Successful Rotary Technology Tournament Despite lower registration, the eighth Annual Technology Tournament run by Leeds Rotary Clubs was a great success and very enjoyable for all concerned. Thirty-two teams descended on the John Charles Stadium. The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councilor Tom Murray was there along with the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, who presented the trophies. The winning schools, in the categories Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, were Cockburn School, Silcoates School, and Pudsey Grangefield respectively, and the Innovation Prize was awarded to Farnley Academy. The students had an enjoyable

and challenging day. The task that they were set tested the students’ knowledge and ingenuity, as well as their manual skills and ability to work in a team. They also had to produce a ‘portfolio’ documenting their ideas and designs. Teams of four tackled designing, developing, building and testing a model of a rescue module, intended to carry equipment across a ravine on an aerial ropeway. The vehicle had to be made from strip
wood, dowel, cardboard, glue etc. The nine Rotary Clubs in the Leeds Group generously sponsored the event and acted as judges. The trophies were sponsored by Woodhall Hills Golf Club. See www.rotary-technology-leeds. org for more details.

Ridiculous Witches in Headingley! Local children’s author Sarah Shafi launched the latest book in her ‘Ridiculous Witches’ series at Headingley Library during Headingley LitFest. Coincidentally, this witch actually lives in Headingley!
“The Lit Fest event was fabulous”, Sarah told us. “There was a great turnout. Being a Leeds lass, I really enjoyed telling them about ‘The Odd Legged Car Crashing Witch of Leeds’! The book has strong ties to Yorkshire Cricket Club and Headingley Cricket Ground, and there are also references to JRR Tolkien who lived at the end of my street!” Sarah started writing poems when she was about 17 and moved on to novels. The Ridiculous Witches series came about following a Halloween party. When
May_2014_Area_A.indd 70
everyone had left the place looked a bit like a bat cave, with flickering pumpkins all over the place. There, sitting beside one of them and a broomstick, was a little black cat. “That got me thinking – a black cat, a broomstick, a pumpkin….I must be a witch! I instantly knew I would be a ridiculous one…Et Voila! Ridiculous Witches were born! “I decided they would take on everyday behavioural problems and exaggerate them in light-hearted, slightly disgusting and fun way to engage kids, and added a few moral twists and turns along the way. I like having each witch from a different city so as to stimulate regional attachment.” The books are aimed at children aged six and up. Sarah is particularly keen for them to connect with boys as there are not many books out there for boys
in this age bracket. If you would like to find out more about the Ridiculous Witches, visit www.ridiculouswitches.com

Richmond House Revels in Rhinos Relay Win Leeds Rhinos invited schools to participate in the Cravendale Milk Relay to raise money for Sport Relief and an outstanding performance from Richmond House Year 3 and 4 pupils ensured they took first place! Six schools took part in the race during half-time at the Leeds Rhinos vs London match at Headingley Carnegie on 21st March. “It was really exciting”, said Joseph Latham (Y4). “There were loads of Leeds Rhinos fans cheering us on. We were all really happy that we came first.” The team of 15 each received a medal and won a year’s supply of Cravendale milk for their school! Leeds Rhinos donated £2 to Sport Relief from every ticket bought by supporters of the children. Donations were also collected on the night. The event was organised by the Leeds Rugby Foundation, which aims to ‘inspire people through sport’ and give young people the opportunity to experience playing sport on the Rhino’s pitch.

City of Leeds School recently made the headlines in both national and local press regarding a new course the school plans to introduce from September. Currently, City of Leeds School teaches children of around 55 nationalities, including pupils from Europe, a number of African nations, the Middle East, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India. This extra English course is designed to help children achieve top grades. “The new GCSE exams, starting in September, demand a much higher level of English”, said Principal, Georgie Sale. “The level of grammar, spelling and vocabulary of the children needs to be much better to get those top grades.
We are committed to giving all our pupils the best possible education
“We are committed to giving all our pupils the best possible education and we are passionate about driving up standards. This innovative new approach will equip all our children with the English language skills they need to reach their full potential. “The classes will be taught according to the pupils’ fluency in English – fluent English speakers will be in a different class, getting a very different lesson to pupils who speak little or no English. This approach will see all of our pupils receive one extra, 50 minute lesson a week, which will boost their
fundamental English skills and improve their basic spelling and grammar. “We hope this will allow pupils who speak English as a first language as well as our multi-lingual learners the same opportunity to accomplish A and A* grades at GCSE. We are proud to be a multi-cultural school and will continue to encourage new ideas to help us to be a supportive and encouraging learning environment where all pupils are given the same chances to learn.”
