SALES TEAM The Oakwood Traders and Residents’ Association (OTRA) is celebrating! After a highly successful awareness and fundraising campaign involving the whole community, it was recently awarded a grant of £100,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund for the refurbishment of the Oakwood Clock. The Clock has been an iconic feature in Oakwood for over 100 years, but had fallen into serious disrepair. In 2012, concerned residents and business owners got together to see what they could do to save the clock, launching a campaign that involved numerous fundraising activities and raising thousands of pounds. The Heritage Lottery funding will go towards the cost of refurbishment, as well as helping to fund an oral history project, which will involve interviews with people about the Clock and the surrounding area. The stories will be published and will form part of a time capsule to be buried at the base of the Clock, and all the material collected will be lodged with the West Yorkshire Archive Service. OTRA will work with the History Club at Roundhay School and with Leeds Museums and Galleries to prepare educational resources for local primary schools, and to create a
Heritage Trail with associated guided walks around the area. The remaining shortfall in funding has been made up by a donation from Grahame and Marilyn Stowe, “Grahame and I wish to honour our late parents and thank the great City of Leeds, which welcomed previous generations of ours and other Jewish families fleeing persecution”, said Marilyn. “We hope the restoration and rejuvenation of the area will benefit everyone for years to come.” “This is fantastic news!” said Alexis Keech, Chair of OTRA. “This means that the Clock refurbishment can start almost immediately. We are very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund and Marilyn and Grahame Stowe, as well as the whole of the local community who have pulled together to raise funds to make this possible.”

FRANK HARRIS FULFORD (1868-1943) BUSINESSMAN, MUSICIAN, PATRON OF THE ARTS
Frank Fulford led a double life. For over 30 years he was managing director of the Leeds-based company supplying the hugely popular and aggressively promoted patent medicines, Bile Beans (pills) and Zambuk (ointment), a business tainted by accusations of quackery. In his private life, he was a dedicated amateur musician, a generous patron of the arts, and a discriminating collector of objects of beauty, some of which he gave to enrich his adopted home city of Leeds. He was in his early thirties when he arrived in Leeds in 1902 from Canada, with his wife and three children. He had come to set up the UK end of the booming patent medicine business founded in Australia in 1897 by his younger brother Charles Edward, who concocted ‘Bile Beans for Biliousness’, supposedly from a secret native recipe discovered by an eminent scientist – all a myth! Phenomenal sales were achieved through door-to-door leafleting, free gifts, and blanket advertising in the popular press, featuring emotive personal stories of miraculous, life-changing cures, presented as news items. Charles was following in the footsteps of his uncle in Canada who had made millions marketing Dr Williams’ Pink Pills for Pale People, a commercial and advertising sensation around the world. The Lifelong Learning Centre at the University of Leeds is an important resource for adults who wish to return to study for a degree or those interested in just learning for pleasure. We have featured the Centre’s Spring into Summer programme in North Leeds Life for the last four years and it has proved very popular. The 2014 programme is shaping up to be very exciting too, particularly the free evening seminars on Women and the First World War and what promises to be a day full of argument and debate about the Scottish Referendum! The Centre delivers a range of flexible full and part-time undergraduate courses. Parttime degrees are available in Arabic and Islamic Studies, Business Studies, Family Support and Teaching and Learning and entry requirements are flexible. The lives and loves of a group of young bohemians in Paris return to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 29th April - Saturday 10 May with Opera North’s production of one of the most popular operas of all time – La Boheme. I first saw Mandy Long’s sculptures at an exhibition at Leeds Town Hall to celebrate the 2013 Rugby League World Cup coming to Leeds and the achievements of the Leeds Rhinos, who have been such an inspiration for her as an artist. The exhibition, organised by Leeds Rugby Arts (Leeds Rugby Foundation), was sponsored by Leeds City Council and Leeds Inspired.
lthough Mandy had done evening courses and, as she says, ‘bits-and-bobs’ over the years, she had always thought of her sculpture as a hobby. It wasn’t until she and her family moved to Leeds in 1999 that she decided, after years of teaching, to start taking it seriously. She took a BTEC in Ceramics and 3D Design at Harrogate College and never looked back. Drawn into the worlds of football and rugby by her sons, she soon started noticing how balletic it could be. Using a

paper-clay process, which entails making a wire armature, then padding out the form in paper before adding the clay, she creates figures that celebrate the dynamics of movement and physicality in sport. The sculpture goes through a biscuit firing first when the paper burns out leaving a wonderfully light sculpture. It is then Raku fired, which gives it its distinctive black and white finish. Her sculptures capture the game. Her figures are players in action, moments frozen in time.
Initially inspired by football, the raw energy and passion of the players, their phenomenal balance, and the unrehearsed grace of their movement, she soon moved on to rugby and contemporary dance, capturing the movement, strength and grace of the dancers and sportspeople. Today Mandy sells her sculptures through galleries all over the country, from Newcastle’s Biscuit Factory and Knaresborough’s Art in the Mill to the Isles of Scilly. Over the past four years Leeds Museums and Galleries have been working in partnership with St. James’ Hospital, curating exhibitions for The Atrium in the Bexley Wing. Each Spring sees a new display, featuring a variety of objects from anthropology collections to fine and decorative works of art, from social history to natural science specimens. This partnership enables Leeds Museums and Galleries to reach new audiences and exhibit artefacts outside their traditional contexts, and contributes to the wellbeing of St James’

Bexley Wing users. This year’s exhibition brings together a mixture of objects from all over the world, including games from Africa, Greek wine jugs, and Giant Snails from South Africa. Called ‘Small Pleasures’ this display was put together by Heather Mikhail, a Heritage Lottery funded curatorial trainee. It explores the small pleasures of life, from video games and bird watching, to a nice cup of tea!
At 07.30am on 1st July 1916, the men of the 15th Battalion, The Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), better known as the Leeds Pals, left their positions in a series of copses named after the Gospels and advanced towards the village of Serre, near Bapaume, in the Somme Valley, only to be met by heavy German machine gun fire, suffering over 500 casualties in a few minutes. Recruited from volunteers in the heady days of September 1914 following Lord Kitchener’s call to arms and trained at Colsterdale in the Yorkshire Dales, the battalion was initially deployed to Egypt to defend the Suez Canal before being sent to France in March 1916 to join the build-up for the Battle of the Somme as part of 31st Division, along with other famous Pals Battalions from Yorkshire and Lancashire. Stephen and his father Mike run a website devoted to the Leeds Pals which includes information donated by friends and relatives of the pals and personal case-histories of named soldiers, local history and military documents. A comic masterpiece comes to Adel Memorial Hall from 23rd-26th April when Adel Players perform Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. One of the most cherished plays in the English language, this Victorian ‘rom-com’ is renowned for its fast-paced dialogue and witty use of language. In addition, Wilde manages to satirise every aspect of the society that closeted him, hoisted him and eventually destroyed him. From the repartee of Algernon and Jack to the hilarious utterings of Lady Bracknell, ‘Earnest’ remains a bona fide classic almost 120 years after its first performance. The piece, ‘Elegy for an English Summer’ was written for small orchestra in 2006 and was recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Tim, who is principal of the Yorkshire College of Music and Drama, also conducts Leeds Male Voice Choir, the Heritage Singers, and the Masterworks Chorale, and is a widely published composer whose music has received widespread performances both here and abroad.

A new photographic exhibition ‘Yorkshire Made Me’ opens at Yorkshire Sculpture Park on Saturday 29th March and runs until Sunday 1st June. It features 37 of Yorkshire’s best known faces, all of whom are passionate about being Yorkshire born and bred and it is accompanied by a gorgeous book of the portraits. The idea came to Jennifer Robertson and Lynne Fletcher of award-winning Kyte Photography as they listened to Liz Green interviewing the great and good from Yorkshire on BBC Radio Leeds’ ‘One on One’ show. They heard her interview with Nicola Adams two years before she won Olympic Gold, and it got them thinking about how many other inspirational Yorkshire people there were about. They made a list and over the next three years approached them all sometimes several times! Dame Judi Dench was filming ‘Skyfall’ when they first called but some months later they were being served tea and cake in Dame Judi’s kitchen! As the project got underway they found they were being recommended to people – Leslie Garrett recommended that Jim Carter (of Downton Abbey fame) get involved. “Everyone was so lovely and welcoming”, said Lynne. “There were no bells and whistles, no stylists, no special lighting. We just asked for people to choose a favourite place to be photographed.” Obviously William Hague and Betty Boothroyd chose the Houses of Parliament. Duncan

It is exactly 150 years since Leeds became an ‘Assize town’ and the High Court moved in. On Friday 16th May, the Town Hall will open its courtroom for a special Charity Gala Performance of ‘Trial By Jury’ by the Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society. The performance is sponsored by Headingley Rotary Club, in aid of Leeds Foodbanks. Gilbert based his operetta on a comic sketch. Impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte suggested he work with Arthur Sullivan and their first collaboration was an instant success. The plot involves a learned judge trying a breach of Promise of Marriage. Edwin, the plaintiff, is being sued by Angelina. The judge entertains the court with a song outlining his dubious rise to distinction. The jury is sworn in and Edwin is called. His
defence is simple: that a chap should be allowed to change his mind and, since he is a violent, drunken cad, she is well shot of him. With the entry of the stunningly beautiful Angelina in her wedding dress, all the men in the court go weak at the knees. A feeble-minded usher suggests that since Edwin is violent when drunk “Let’s make him tipsy, gentlemen, and try”. Uproar ensues, ending only when the judge throws his papers in the air and comes to judgement. Exactly how, you can find out on Friday 16th May. The performance lasts just 40 minutes (benches a bit hard – you might like to take a cushion!). There is a Gala Reception at 6.30pm,

The Dales Festival of Food and Drink, which takes place just outside Leyburn over the May Bank Holiday (3rd – 5th May), is one of the largest events in Wensleydale.

I suppose the exciting thing about Dough Bistro is that it is always changing! It started out as Dough Bakery, which morphed into Dough Deli, which in turn became Dough Bistro!
It all comes down to Luke Downing’s passion for food and trying out new tastes and combinations. There is no standing still! The menu changes every month. When we dropped in recently we had a choice of a two course menu for £22, a four course for £ 27, or a seven course taster menu for £40! Tempting though it was we decided that the seven courses might defeat us, so we opted for the four. This evening of culinary delights started out with a little cup of delicious Mushroom Forestiere soup with lovely homemade bread. This was followed by Pine Smoked Salmon with asparagus, watercress, mixed bean and artichoke salad, prawns and mustard dressing; and Seared Whitby Scallops with

sauted potato, apricot and pear salsa and Grassington ham crisps. Then a little Grapefruit and Mint Sorbet appeared….and disappeared. For main courses we chose Swordfish with a wonderfully fresh and tasty salsa verde, Whitby crab croquette, saffron mayonnaise and balsamic syrup; and Pork tenderloin with homemade black pudding, tiger prawns, mashed potato and rhubarb puree – adding sides of sweet

potato chips with goat’s cheese and chorizo and some veg. What was really lovely was the element of surprise. I never would have put pork and prawns together but it worked so well. The same with the mixed bean salad and smoked salmon. The crab croquette was not an after-thought, it was a definite flavour statement. The goat’s cheese really complemented the sweet potato chips. You didn’t rush through this food – you savoured every bite, wondering what you were going to encounter next. Of course, every restaurant likes to boast that they use local produce but Dough takes that a step further – Luke actually has his own allotment in Roundhay! If he doesn’t have what he needs there, he also has a plot at Swillington Farm. As I mentioned, Dough never stands still….. there are changes afoot. There’s a new Early Bird menu (£13.95 for two courses, £17.95 for three), new signage, an extended bar area with nice comfy seating where you can just drop in and have a drink and enjoy the new bar menu, and even a takeaway menu. Although these events are not obviously linked, it is worth asking just what our grandchildren will make of our climatic legacy. Instead, it is asking councillors and others to spread the word. Finally, I have had a number of emails, phone-calls, and conversations in the street about progress towards the new Alwoodley Health Centre. As North Leeds Life readers will know, this is a project that Neil, Peter and I are working on incredibly hard, with local GPs, to persuade the NHS Board that this is essential for the whole of North Leeds. This part of Leeds must have the same level of health provision as other parts of the city. We are hoping to get an update very soon and, as soon as we do, we will report back to you. rising CO2 in the atmosphere it was predictable that the climate would destabilise and that dramatic weather events would follow. It is often said that we cannot link any specific weather event to climate change, but it is obvious that extreme phenomena are becoming more frequent, and that more and more weather records are being broken. This is just as climate scientists predicted. Like many people I have long thought the solution to climate change lay in finding better ways of generating power sustainably and using energy more efficiently. But that is not enough in itself because oil, gas and coal, that is not consumed in one household, factory, power station or country, is likely to
be bought and used somewhere else. This is especially true as new industries develop around the world and economies grow. A better solution is to start by reducing the extraction of, and trade in, these fossil fuels by enforceable treaties. Reducing the production of fossil fuels internationally could drive the development of sustainable alternate energy technology, and lead to reduction in waste. We have a long way to go, but I would rather not be the one telling my grandchild that climate scientists have predicted that our CO2 legacy will reverse naturally over the coming 50 to 60,000 years.

Northcall Spruces Up Café and Launches New Housekeeping Project Northcall Community Centre at 53-55 Cranmer Bank, LS17, provides a wide variety of services. Last year, it spruced up its Community Cafe and secured funding for a part-time café manager, to attract more customers. The changes have worked a treat and the café is now turning into a profitable enterprise. There is a teatime club for families, a luncheon club for older people, and it is used for cookery lessons for young and old. It’s open from 9am – 2pm and serves, amongst other tasty morsels, what Northcall boasts is the best bacon sandwich in Leeds and possibly the cheapest!
The Centre, a registered charitiy, has recently also received funding from Leeds City Council for a new housekeeping project designed to help older people stay in their own homes for longer. At just £11 an hour they believe it is one of the cheapest such services in Leeds. “We have just become Green Tick Registered with the Council”, said Janet Pike, Project Manager. “This means

Outline planning permission has already been given and detailed plans will be submitted by the end of March, after which there will be a period of public consultation. The plans will be available on the LCC Planning Department site. The houses (24 detached and four affordable townhouses) will be built along the perimeter of the site, bordering Allerton Grove and behind Windsor Court to The Spinney.
Parkland will cover the remaining 78% of the land and will include a children’s play area with wooden and natural features, mown grass and areas of grasses and sedges, wildflower plantings, and an area of wetland. Some trees without preservation orders will be felled but new ones will be planted. Access will be by footpath only from Shadwell Lane and Allerton Grove. It is likely that LCC Parks & Countryside Department will construct the park area and will have future responsibility for its maintenance. It is hoped that work will begin by the end of July this year and that the houses will be completed by Summer 2015. A new group, ‘Friends of

Older Wiser Local Seniors (OWLS) and students from Leeds Metropolitan University recently held their annual volunteer party at the Great Hall on Headingley Campus.
There will be an Easter Family Fun Day and Welly Walk in Golden Acre Park, Otley Road, from 10am – 4pm on Saturday 19th April. The event will feature an Easter trail around the lake, a larger than life Easter chick, Easter crafts, planting vegetables, face painting, hook-a-duck, new and nearly new toys, a fantastic raffle and all the fun of the fair! The Welly Walk is a lighthearted, fun, sponsored event. The organisers are currently recruiting walkers - all they ask is that you raise £10 in sponsorship. The event is in aid of Joseph Lillywhite (6) who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, a year ago. He has undergone numerous stays in hospital and unpleasant treatment, and is on the third cycle of chemotherapy.

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON A welcome harbinger of Spring is the Wheatear, which arrives from Africa to nest in the upper Dales. En route it appears briefly on farmland, golf courses and the coast. Wheatears are greyish above and buffish below with a conspicuous white rump and black tail-bands. Males have a black eye-mask, black wings and a pinkish-buff breast. Attractive birds, they prefer upland pastures, rocky hillsides and stone walls. A characteristic habit is flying ahead of people, then perching before moving on again. They are hardy birds and can withstand brief hill snowfalls by moving temporarily to lower ground. Insects are their staple

diet. These active birds have a ‘wheet-chuk-chuk’ call. The song is a rapid series of rasping notes often delivered in excited display flight. Numbers of Wheatears have declined over the years.

The Friends Garden – a Hidden Gem in Roundhay Park One of the lesser known gems in Roundhay Park is the Friends’ Garden, located just inside the small gateway into the Park from Old Park Road and behind Canal Gardens. It was planned and created by Friends of Roundhay Park (FoRP) and is now maintained by a small dedicated team. In 2001, FoRP decided they would like to create a garden and the Park allocated an area that was once a small zoo. It was a daunting sight! At one side was a stagnant watercourse, overgrown with huge phormiums, day lilies and 20ft high holly trees, which thrived despite a soil full of stony debris.
However, there were beautiful old stone walls on two sides and two charming Acers and a Weeping Cherry were discovered among the overgrowth. Judith Rothenberg, a member of FoRP, designed the garden, taking her inspiration from the Yorkshire Dales with rock outcrops, steppingstones over the stream, and woodland beyond. Since the site was too confined for heavy machinery, all work had to be done by hand, including the handling of enormous stones and construction of
gabions to consolidate the ground around the stream. FoRP pushed, pulled and lifted an estimated 200 tonnes of materials onto the site! No commercial contractor was employed. The entire project was carried out by volunteers, with advice on dry stone walling from The Conservation Volunteers. The Friends’ Garden was officially opened in 2005 and today is a quiet, cool oasis enjoyed by by visitors to the Park. Things to Enjoy in the April Garden
Keep Your Garden Looking Good
With beautiful pink and white blossom in the trees and brightly coloured bulbs such as Narcissi and Tulips growing beneath, our gardens are beginning to look glorious! There are delicious food plants to harvest too, including Rhubarb and Sprouting Broccoli. Most of our region’s splendid gardens open their gates in April, so it is a perfect time to get out and pick up some ideas and inspiration. York Gate and Stillingfleet Lodge are two of my favourites as they are both small enough to feel homely and full of good ideas that you can adapt to your own garden. They both sell homegrown plants too.
The grass is growing and your lawn will need regular trims from now on. Make sure you are gentle with it and only cut off a little for the first few cuts of the season. Cutting once a fortnight is usually sufficient this month. It is time to prune back stems of Cornus, Willow and Rubus grown for their coloured bark. Taking them right back to just a few inches above ground level encourages new growth for good colour next Winter. You can use the Cornus twigs as supports for tall border plants like Delphiniums and Lupins and this is the perfect time to put them in place before the plants are taller than knee

CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 99 MINS Merely the fact that The Grand Budapest Hotel is the latest film from leftfield auteur Wes Anderson should tell you almost everything you need to know. Those familiar with Anderson’s work will recognise the hallmarks of his signature style; a high calibre, stellar cast, titles in Futura font, meticulously detailed production design, vintage soundtrack, literary sensibilities and an air of cultivated eccentricity, whimsy and gentle melancholy. As such, you’re likely to know already if you’ll be going to see The Grand Budapest Hotel, depending largely on whether or not you’re a fan of Anderson’s stylistic flourishes and find his characteristic flights of fancy enchanting and endearing or if, like some, you consider his films overly contrived, self-conscious and (that lame and overused to the point of meaninglessness adjective), ‘quirky’. I am firmly in the former camp having heartily enjoyed the majority of Anderson’s previous features, particularly Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr Fox. Not only does Grand Budapest deliver everything we’ve come to expect from an Anderson production, but I consider it to be one of his best.

H (a delightfully camp comedic performance by Ralph Fiennes) during his tenure at the GBH between the wars of the fictional eastern European country of Zubrowka. The tale is recounted in flashback by Zero Moustafa, once Gustave’s protégé and loyal ‘Lobby Boy’, now the enigmatic owner of the hotel. Through Zero’s reminiscences we see Gustave as the lynchpin of the hotel’s operation, charming and accommodating to a fault. He’s also in the habit of conducting amorous affairs with the hotel’s wealthy older female patrons. When one such guest (a barely recognisable Tilda Swinton) drops dead and bequeaths Gustave a valuable painting he is forced to go on the run with lobby boy in tow, pursued by both the authorities, who suspect him of the old lady’s murder, and by the deceased’s family attempting to lay claim to her fortune. As I say, this film is either up your alley or it isn’t but, if you’re at all susceptible to the myriad charms of Anderson’s filmmaking, then this buoyant,

energetic picture is a splendidly enjoyable farcical romp. Like the rest of his oeuvre The Grand Budapest Hotel is absolutely gorgeous to look at and listen to, the costume and set design are just stunning to behold and virtually each frame is packed with an abundance of visual treats. It’s almost like a work out for your eyes. With bold colours bursting from the screen and kinetic camerawork the audience is swept up in the giddying swirl of exhilarating set pieces such as a brilliant prison break sequence and a snowbound, high speed chase. The cast, generously populated by thespian heavyweights and featuring cameos from a host of Anderson
regulars (Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, Jason Schwartzman et al) are uniformly great (particularly Fiennes in a refreshingly atypical role) and newcomer Tony Revolori, at the centre of the film as the young Zero, casually holds his own among such esteemed company. In terms of creating a beautifully realised, fantastical world the film is painstakingly crafted and aesthetically rich and sumptuous. It’s also an involving, rollicking yarn played out with verve, panache and an infectious, mischievous sense of fun. I’d strongly suggest you hasten your way to the front desk and check in to The Grand Budapest Hotel.

In 2012 Tony cycled over 1,000 kilometers across Zambia and then from Vietnam to Cambodia, while in 2013 Steve part took in the 10K Jane Tomlinson Run. And, later this year, the directors and a number of staff plan to enter into the Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for local charities.

Second Americana Series at Seven Arts
It’s the 60s. What do you do when your brother (Sir Paul) has taken over the world with his band? Mike McCartney changed his name to Mike McGear, formed his own band ‘Scaffold’, and moved into the satire and comedy field. Hit records and TV series followed before Mike turned his back on showbiz to return to photography – his first love. That was 42 years ago. Mike has documented Liverpool since the late 50s, developing his films in the back bedroom and building up a fantastic collection. His portraits have been bought by The National Portrait Gallery and he has exhibited at The Smithsonian Institute. As well as the 60’s scene and famous faces, he captured a whole other side of Liverpool that nobody knows about. Someone invited him to do a Q & A in a bookshop and the

idea of a ‘One Man Show’ was born. The show is called ‘Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘N’ Roll (I Wish!)’ and is a hilarious and nostalgic look back, chronicling his life as seen through the photos he’s taken along the way. Mike’s show, which combines reminiscence, striking photography and a few songs too, is at City Varieties – the perfect venue for such an evening - on Saturday 19th April. He’s looking forward to plenty of audience participation!
Following a successful series of Americana gigs last year at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, the new 2014 series kicks off on Saturday 5th April with Rita Hosking from Northern California.
Hosking sings original mountain roots music, soulful ballads and old time drive. She has a voice that really grabs your attention - a kind of cross between the haunting delivery of Gillian Welch and the richness of Iris Dement. She is one of the best-kept secrets in country folk and her razorsharp songs and great live performances attest to that. Also included in this year’s series is sensational newcomer Amanda Shires and established stalwarts Kim Richey and Eve Selis. Seven is rapidly becoming known on the Americana circuit as a venue with quality sound, encouraging fans to travel considerable distances to attend events.

Award for Excellence for Knock on Wood The 2014 Music Teacher Awards for Excellence, sponsored by Classic FM and Yamaha were announced recently at a ceremony in London. Out of 200 nominations, the judges selected 12 winners – and the winner in the ‘Most Innovative Retailer’ category was Knock on Wood, who they described as: “achieving outstanding commercial service by bringing practicing musicians and experts to the forefront of its operations’. hen Leeds-based singersongwriter, Fuzzy Jones attended the premiere of ‘50 Kisses’, London Screenwriters’ first crowd-sourced feature film, in London recently she’d gone along because one of her songs is included on the end credits of the film. What she didn’t know was that her track, ‘Swans’, had just been voted ‘Best Song’ at the London Screenwriters’ Awards. Fuzzy got involved when a friend who was working on the film, suggested she should enter the 50 Kisses ‘Music Challenge’ competition to find music for the film. She decided to enter ‘Swans’, a hauntingly beautiful ode to lost love that she co-wrote as part of her musical project ‘Love of the Brave’. It won the Music Challenge and was chosen to play over the film’s end credits. An initiative to showcase

Countdown to Le Grand Depart
he excitement surrounding Le Grand Depart continues to gather momentum! Cycling clubs are organising rides taking in parts of the route and inviting as many people as possible to grab a bike and join in. The cultural festival has lined up photographic exhibitions and bike stories; David Hall of Sustrans invites everyone to ‘Free your bike’; and there’s to be a special Hospice Cycle Sportive. You absolutely cannot avoid thinking about cycling!
AlbaRosa – More than a Club! Although AlbaRosa started just over a year ago, it is now Leeds’ largest cycling club with over 300 members and caters for all levels, from novice through to racer. It started casually with a small group that wanted to push a competitive element, strava-based activity, and faster social rides than didn’t quite suit their previous club, and it just grew! “I believe our success comes primarily from our member input”, said club captain Jamie Tweddle. “Because we are young we have the luxury of being able to constantly change and adapt to our members’ suggestions. We run regular polls asking how they would like to see things done.

“AlbaRosa is a really busy and vibrant place to be. You can get caught up in it and it can take up a lot of your time. We offer three days’ training and five club runs a week – not to mention the constant interaction that goes on 24/7 on Facebook. Bike Story: Life on Two Wheels Through Everyday Stories Bike Story wants your recollections! This memorable outdoor theatre event will start and finish in York and will be scripted by playwright Mike Kenny using your tales of city streets and rural rides; of breakdowns, riding in packs, bike envy and much more. Touring festivals and events across Yorkshire, it will be a feast of storytelling on a cyclocentric set with real actors, real bicycles and real tales of life in the saddle. Whether you are a regular or occasional cyclist, this is the year to free your bike. The Tour de France sets off from Leeds on 5th July and races round Yorkshire in two days. For the slower paced cyclist, however, there’s another Tour de Yorkshire out there, using routes on the National Cycle Network. Forget about busy roads and stress, give your bike a relaxed day out using some of the Network’s 1,000 Yorkshire miles. For hassle free gentle cycling choose one of the classic railway paths – the Cinder Track between Scarborough and Hayburn Wyke; the Nidderdale Greenway between Harrogate and Ripley, crossing the Nidd gorge and ending with ice creams at Ripley Castle; or Yorkshire’s original railway path from Selby to York, continuing on the riverside path and quiet lanes to Beningbrough Hall for afternoon tea.
For rides in West Yorkshire, your bike will really enjoy the Wetherby to Thorp Arch railway path, or follow the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath route from Leeds City Centre to Saltaire and Bingley. You can also escape to the Pennine foothills on the Great Northern Railway Trail (Cullingworth to Queensbury), or cruise the Spen Valley Greenway from Low Moor Bradford to Dewsbury and Ossett passing through Earlsheaton tunnel. Especially spruced up recently for Le Tour visitors are the miles of canal and riverside route from Brighouse to Hebden Bridge and Todmorden through the dramatic landscape of the Calder Valley. It’s fun to ride with a few friends, there’s always plenty to talk about and you can stop at a café for a drink and some cake! Consider joining a local cycling club. Do a quick web search to see which ones are in your area. There are usually some experienced riders who are happy to give tips and pass on advice. They’ll also have a good knowledge of quiet routes into the countryside.

The Hospice Cycle Sportive St Gemma’s Hospice, together with three other Yorkshire hospices are launching a brand new cycle event. The Hospice Cycle Sportive will be on Sunday 13th July and involves a choice of a 70 or 46 mile circular routes. Starting at St Gemma’s in Moortown, the longer route takes cyclists past other hospices including Overgate, Kirkwood, Barnsley and Wakefield; whilst the shorter route passes through Overgate and Kirkwood. Softball is a fun, friendly, inclusive sport played by men and women of all ages, regardless of athletic ability or skill level.
Rather than relying on athletic prowess, softball requires communication, teamwork and the ability to think on your feet. As well as offering players a chance to keep fit and develop important skills, softballers enjoy unmatched camaraderie and support on the field. Teams are made up of at least five men and five women. Each

side takes turns to hit a ball into a field and scores runs by running around a set of bases, during which time the opposing team attempts to limit their scoring by gaining outs. The Leeds Softball Association (LSA) was established over twenty years ago by a group of engineering firms that wanting to get together, compete in sport and socialise outside office hours. Today it caters for about fourteen private and corporate teams with around 250 active players. As well as a rich social calendar, members
have the option to compete in regular weekend softball tournaments across the country. In the UK alone there are nearly 10,000 active players. The LSA is currently looking for corporate and private teams to join its competitive but fun and informal league for the 2014 season, which runs from May to August. The club is one of 23 projects to share £7.3 million of Lottery investment, focused on minimising the environmental impact of sports facilities by investing in sustainable projects with a clear local need. The Chapel A club will use this money to reduce energy usage, whilst improving the sporting facilities, as part of a £280,000 investment
programme. A biomass boiler will be installed along with energy efficient lighting on all six squash and three indoor tennis courts plus new surface on the indoor tennis courts. A typical sports clubs spends around 30% of its running costs on energy, and about £10,000 a year on electricity alone. By becoming more environmentally sustainable, clubs can reduce their energy bills by 10-20%. Chapel A will work closely with Sport England, the LTA and England Squash and Racketball to develop an ambitious community programme. These initiatives will begin after Easter and coaching staff will run taster sessions and coaching classes for both children and adults around Leeds. There will also be a number of one-off events to encourage people of all ages to have a go at a new sport. Look out for tennis in the local parks and schools.

Leeds Midnight Walk The eighth annual, ladies only, Leeds Midnight Walk, in aid of St Gemma’s Hospice, takes place on Saturday 17th May. The seven or ten mile circular walk around Kirkstall, Horsforth and West Park is along well lit streets, starting and finishing at the Xercise 4 Less Gym on Kirkstall Road. Once registered, each walker will receive a fundraising pack full of information, as well as a stylish T-shirt. Registration on the night starts at 8pm. A group of parents is currently seeking to raise awareness for a new Steiner Academy that could help to tackle the shortage of school places in Leeds.
According to a report by Leeds City Council, the lack of 753 primary school spaces last year meant that children had to be educated outside the city. The proposed academy (for children aged four – 16), is due to open in 2015 and will offer an alternative way of learning based on the Steiner Waldorf method, which encourages children to explore the world through play until they are ready for formal lessons at

the age of seven. The first intake of pupils will be for children aged between four and six in 2015. There will be an increased intake each year until a total of 624 pupils (up to age 16), is reached in 2025. The school will use a specific curriculum to teach children, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and experiential learning, ensuring that pupils leave with the National Standard of eight GCSEs, or the equivalent. “We are a group of parents, teachers and community leaders who are trying to get this application through”, said

ope Pastures’ ‘Pony Days’ are hugely popular. Children spend a day caring for the ponies – including mucking out, grooming, plaiting manes and tails, leading the ponies and having lots of fun. Games, quizzes and activities take place in the visitor centre, giving the children a chance to relax and socialise in between stable activities. They meet the horses, ponies, mule and donkeys and get to know them all. It is the closest thing to actually having a pony of their own!

With funding from Community First, the Hollybush Café at Hollybush Conservation Centre (run by The Conservation Volunteers) now has interactive exploration bags for children. The kits contain magnifying glasses, binoculars, pond nets and bug boxes. They are designed for pond dipping, insect hunting, identifying trees, birds and wildflowers. The Hollybush café, located on the canal path where Broad Lane meets Wyther Lane, is open 11am – 2pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Roundhay St John’s Ramps Up the Red Roundhay St John’s Primary School Ramped Up The Red in support of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in February. Inspired by Sue Green, BHF Fundraising Volunteer Manager, the pupils took Ramp up the Red day to heart to raise funds for vital research and care for those suffering from heart disease. The children came to school in every shade of red imaginable, even customising their school uniform jumpers. Dinner staff joined in the fun offering special heart-friendly lunches. An ‘active playground’ challenge gave children the chance raise their own heartbeats. And, a display of heart-healthy hints created by the children was unveiled.
“We wanted to get involved because it’s so important for children (and parents!) to take action towards healthier hearts”, said Andrew Graham, Head Teacher. “It’s never too early to start living healthily and we think the BHF is doing great work. We have raised both money and awareness, as well as having lots of fun.” Louise Parkes, Fundraising Director at the BHF, said: “Ramp up the Red is a opportunity for people to think about how many lives are affected by heart disease. By organising this event the school has helped us to raise much-needed funds. The BHF is the biggest funder of lifesaving heart research in the UK.
