The BAFTA award-winning television adaptation was commissioned by the BBC for CBeebies last year. Funding from the Leeds Inspired fund allowed Northern Ballet to create Ugly Duckling, with the aim of reaching children and families who wouldn’t normally go to ballet. Initially performed at community venues in Leeds, the ballet received further funding from Arts Council England to tour

throughout the North of England. To date more than 25,000 children and their families have seen a live performance, over 250,000 have watched the television adaptation, and 400,000 have experienced it through BBC iPlayer and the CBeebies website. “Our partnership with the BBC in the creation of Ugly Duckling was a fantastic way to introduce ballet to new audiences”, said Mark Skipper, Northern Ballet’s Chief Executive. “We are thrilled that it has received this recognition.”

FRANCIS MARTINEAU LUPTON (1848-1921) BUSINESSMAN AND HOUSING REFORMER

There are still streets and buildings around Leeds named after the Lupton family, and many reminders of their contribution over the years to the life and improvement of the city: in industry and commerce, in public service, in education, in housing. Francis (Frank) Martineau Lupton made his mark in the transforming work of slum clearance, helping to lift the city out of Victorian darkness and squalor. But alongside his public and professional work, he had to endure, like so many others, the unsparing personal tragedies of the First World War. He had a comfortable, favoured childhood: first at Potternewton Hall, a handsome Queen Anne house, long demolished, and then at ‘Beechwood’, an impressive mansion (now oﬃces) set in parkland in Elmete Lane, Roundhay. His father Francis was a partner in the family wool business, while his mother Fanny was active in various social causes, particularly women’s education; her aunt was the writer Harriet Martineau, and this family connection gave Frank his second name. He had three younger brothers, all destined to play a part in the city’s life. After study at Leeds Grammar School, he went on to Trinity College, Cambridge, which had just opened its doors to non-conformists like him. Frank joined the family business, William Lupton & Sons, at Whitehall Mills, and in his spare time served in the volunteer Leeds Rifles. In 1880, when he was 32, he married Harriet Davis, daughter of the vicar of St John’s Church, Roundhay, near his home. Five children followed, three sons and two daughters, and they moved to a new, handsome house, ‘Rockland’, at the top of St Mary’s Road, Newton Park, Chapeltown, built on part of the Lupton estate. But tragedy struck in 1892 when Harriet, just after the birth of their second daughter, caught influenza and died. Frank never remarried. A fearsome housekeeper looked after the house and his five children until his daughters could take over. Frank entered local politics and was elected a Councillor and then Alderman. He had a particular interest in the housing and welfare of the poor, and as a follower of the social reformer Octavia Hill believed ardently in the need to improve and regenerate inner city

areas of working class housing. For 10 years from 1896 he chaired the Council’s Unhealthy Areas Committee, set up with new powers to tackle the ‘evil legacy’ of the Leeds slums, breeding grounds for disease and death. Its first major scheme was to clear the notorious York Street and Quarry Hill areas, with their crumbling, dank yards. Inspections had to be made, prices agreed, tenants moved out, the rotting buildings demolished, rehousing organised – almost four thousand buildings were cleared. Frank led the action, and promoted other more modest schemes, involving selective demolition to create light, air and open spaces, and the regeneration of existing still usable housing. He opposed the Council’s proposal to build flats (‘tenements’) for rehousing and this disagreement triggered his resignation as chairman, but he continued as a member, and later chaired the Council’s Improvement and Finance committees – a long record of dedicated public service. In 1914 his daughter Olive married a Leeds solicitor, Richard Middleton – a union which has famously linked the family story to the ancestry of the Duchess of Cambridge. But this happy event was overshadowed by the outbreak of war. All three of Frank’s sons went to the Front. One by one they were killed in action: Maurice, his middle son, in the trenches of Lille in 1915; Lionel, the youngest, at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, having returned to the Front after being wounded; and Francis, his eldest son, in early 1917, after an agonising wait when he had been declared missing. All three are

buried in France. Frank, a quiet, unassuming man, was said to have borne his losses stoically, but the light had gone out of his life. After the war he let his house ’Rockland’ at a nominal rent for use as a home for the children of soldiers and sailors lost in the war (it is used now as a NHS centre), and moved with his daughter to a smaller house. He died soon after, in 1921, and was buried at St John’s Church, Roundhay – now a sad place, desolate and barricaded. It was said at his funeral that he had ‘brought sunshine to the fetid slums of Leeds’, but his own life lay in shadow.

Dino Jaws - the Natural History Museum Exhibition - will open at New Dock Hall, Leeds, on Tuesday 3rd June and will run until Sunday 7th September.

‘Voices of Asia’, a new gallery showcasing Asian culture and Leeds’ links with the continent, recently opened at Leeds City Museum. It celebrates the sights, sounds, diversity and culture of Asia and the different Asian communities that make up the thriving multi-cultural city today. The new gallery is the first major gallery refresh since the museum opened in 2008 and replaces the ‘Out of Africa’ gallery. The displays, which have been planned in partnership with the Asian community, will remain in place for around five years, but will change annually to reflect different projects, themes and world faiths. Developed with organisations like South Asian Arts, Leeds Hindu Mandir, Hamara, Jamyang Buddhist Centre, Leeds Asian Blind Association and Shantona, the

‘Around the World in 80 Textiles’, which runs from 30th April - 25th July, & 30th September - 28th November, celebrates the decade since ULITA opened at St. Wilfred’s Chapel in the Maurice

Keyworth Building, University of Leeds, and showcases the scope of the archive by presenting costume and textiles from all the countries featured in ULITA’s collections. None of the items selected have been displayed since the opening in 2004. The exhibition highlights some of the fascinating donors’ stories – including the adventurous Professor Barker, who brought together one of ULITA’s finest collections of nineteenth century Chinese textiles; and the amazing embroiderer Louisa Pesel, whose work was inspired by her extensive travels. ULITA has its origins in a university research collection brought together in the early twentieth century. With substantial recent additions, this exhibition provides an opportunity to view the diversity of motifs, symbols, patterns, techniques and constructions found in the world of textiles. Countries represented include Britain, Turkey, France, Hungary, Greece, Denmark, Moldova, Romania, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Iran, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Japan, China, Peru and Mexico.

ULITA is an Arts Council Accredited textiles museum housed at the University of Leeds. Its purpose is to collect, preserve and document textiles and other related items from many of the textile producing areas of the world for the benefit of researchers and the general public. Strengths of the collection include: Mediterranean, Indian and Chinese embroideries; Indonesian batiks and ikats; Pakistani prints; European pattern books; Kashmiri shawls.

Drawing up a programme for a theatre like West Yorkshire Playhouse must be both tremendously exciting and terrifying! James Brining’s choices have provided us with a superb programme, combining classic with contemporary and traditional with wildly innovative, whilst aiming to connect more with the community, to be rooted in the North but never losing sight of the wider picture. When James considered looking at the work of one writer from different perspectives and angles, someone who had a relationship with the city, but would not seem parochial, Alan Bennett seemed the natural choice. Choosing which pieces to include was diﬃcult. This selection is a small part of a major canon of Alan’s work, a celebration of and tribute to the life, times and work of Leeds’ most successful dramatist. Having read a lot of Alan’s work, James was drawn to ‘Enjoy’. “It’s a play I didn’t know very well”, he said. “It throws up surprises, challenges expectations. It’s hilarious and quite dark, funny on the surface, but disturbing underneath. It doesn’t necessarily fit his reputation – which doesn’t always respect his work or his view of the world. “We are the first theatre outside London to stage ‘Enjoy’. Although it was written over 30 years ago, it feels like a play written for now, exploring how we assimilate into contemporary culture. Intrinsically it is about being from the ‘North’ and how you carry that in you for your life.”

Set in the 1980s, ‘Enjoy’ is an idiosyncratic examination of northern working-class life. The poetry of everyday life starkly contrasts with the bitter reality of old age and the complexity of moving on. The cast includes Marlene Sidaway, Philip Martin Brown (Waterloo Road), and Sian Reese Williams (Emmerdale). The Alan Bennett Season also features his Untold Stories: ‘Hymn’ and ‘Cocktail Sticks’; three short plays from his wonderful ‘Talking Heads’ series; and the smash-hit musical ‘Betty Blue Eyes’ which is based on the screenplay of Alan’s ‘Private Function’. There will also be a raft of things going on both alongside and after the season. The short plays are perfect for taking out into the community and will be performed in several areas around the city. Not one to name drop, but when Marti Pellow called us recently……..! The Wet Wet Wet star was so delighted to be playing Leeds Grand Theatre again. He played a highly successful gig there just last year. “I love Leeds Grand”, he told me. “It’s a fantastic theatre and you really feel the love for the building from the audience.” He returns this year in a very different guise – that of Che Guevara in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Evita’. Tim Rice was a real Wet Wet Wet fan and approached Marti in 2005 to appear in the musical ‘Chess’. “It was a bit of a departure from what I had been doing, but I love their work – wonderful words and melodies and great accessibility.” In addition to Chess, Marti

has also appeared in The Witches of Eastwick, Jekyll & Hyde, Chicago and Blood Brothers. He is now so enamoured with musical theatre he is busy writing several musicals of his own! One of these is based in the 20s, another ‘Parcel of Rogues’ is based on a Scottish folk song whose lyrics are taken from a Robert Burns poem of 1791, deriding those members of the Parliament of Scotland who signed the Act of Union. He never stops writing. On top of that, Wet Wet Wet are coming out to play again over the Summer – they may all go their separate ways but this group of childhood friends can’t resist getting back together to perform for old and new fans.

For the last year, a group of Leeds artists has investigated the city from the outside in, developing ‘365 Leeds Stories’, a participatory arts project. The project began online in 2012, when local storyteller Matthew Bellwood began documenting the city as a series of tweets released over 365 days. The tweets told stories of the city in 140 characters – recounting fragments of conversations overheard that day and little known facts about the city. Since last September, Matthew has worked with theatre-maker Alison Andrews and seven groups of people from all over Leeds, recording sights and sounds, following routes taken through the city, places of happiness or discomfort, or of unrealised potential. People’s memories of Leeds as it used to be have been recorded, together with their thoughts about the city today, and

their hopes and fears for the future. Working in partnership with Leeds Library and Information Service, Leeds Museums and Galleries, East Leeds FM, three local primary schools and Pyramid of Arts, they have made a series of maps of Leeds, which describe the city in myriad ways. Leeds has been recorded in song, embroidered in cloth, imagined in shadows and written as stories. They have also worked with nine other local artists - including a choir leader, composer, graphic and textile artists, shadow puppeteer, photographer and scenographer. From Sunday 4th – Thursday 22nd May, some of the stories and maps will form the basis of an exhibition in The Arts Space, Leeds Central Library, Calverley Street. It will be presented as a walk through a labyrinth – who knows what’s waiting around the corner!

Milestone for Orchestra’s Conductor

Photo: Chris Midgley Martin Binks conducted his first concert with Leeds Symphony Orchestra in May 1970 and now, on Saturday 17th May at St. Chad`s Church, Far Headingly, he will conduct his 300th concert with the orchestra! The programme is an exciting one and features the renowned guitarist Craig Ogden who will play the Villa-Lobos Guitar Concerto. Craig, a close friend of Martin’s, has played with the orchestra on numerous occasions. His first concert with the LSO was in 1994, so this occasion will mark the twentieth anniversary. Also featured is ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’ by Copland and ‘The Planets’ by Gustav Holst. This work requires a huge orchestra similar In size to the one required for Richard Strauss’ ‘Alpine Symphony’, which the orchestra played at St. Chad’s in 2011. St. Chad’s is a regular concert venue for the orchestra and rehearsals are held there on Monday evenings, following the recent closure of the West Park Centre. The concert starts at 7.30pm. The Leeds Big Bookend, ‘a rock festival for words’ that celebrates Leeds’ rich literary heritage, young talent and cultural diversity takes place on 7th and 8th June. As part of the main programme, debates and panel discussions run alongside readings and talks from brilliant writers and performances from poets and musicians. The children’s and young adult programmes have competitions for aspiring writers. For five – 11 year olds it’s all about pirates! The challenge is to write a poem or adventure story of no more that 500 words. The competition for 12-18 year olds involves a 500 word book review. The competitions are open to anyone attending a Leeds

school, so get writing! Prizes will be awarded in each category and will be presented at special events during the weekend. Have you noticed that authors have been coming out of the woodwork in North Leeds? It used to be that having your manuscript turned down by literary agents spelt the end to any dream of publication. Now it is possible for anyone to publish electronically, and even bring out your work in printed book form, without significant capital outlay. Neil Ashcroft and Pat Gerwat are the latest authors to take this route, having just self-published their own, very different, literary efforts. Pat married Michael Gerwat, a blind musician and piano tuner in 1988. Within a year he suffered a serious hearing loss and soon became completely deaf. What is the world like if you are totally deaf and blind? How do you communicate? How do you survive? Michael and Pat have written ‘Touch Me Please’ to answer these questions and tell the story of his life. Devastated by the onset of deafness, Michael looks back on his childhood, education and successful career including working with many famous rock bands like Elton John, U2, Bob Geldof, Tears for Fears, and talks of his favourite band, Genesis. He expresses his grief at the loss of his beloved music. Pat describes what it was like when he lost his hearing, and their struggle to build a meaningful life for Micheal. In those early, dark days they were lovingly supported by their friends and the Quaker community at Adel. Although there are moments of intense

sadness there’s much humour too, and Michael’s indomitable spirit shines through. Pat admired the courage with which he faced his difficulties, and felt it was a tale that people would find uplifting.

Neil writes as Russell Croft Although Neil’s work is fictional, it is based on the real life story of someone who also suffered from considerable handicaps in his passage through life. Writing as Russell Croft, Neil has published ‘Bring Him in Mad’, a historical novel based on the William Windham Lunacy Trial of 1861/2. Windham, the eccentric young squire of Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk, was subjected to this public inquisition into his sanity by his aristocratic relatives, who abhorred his marriage to Agnes

Willoughby, a famous society courtesan. Neil’s book brings to life the principal characters involved in the affair and charts the twists and turns of a trial that was extensively covered in the press and which gripped public attention for weeks. Though often humorous, the book is a serious reminder of the relationship between madness and morality, which is as relevant today as it was in Victorian times. Both titles are available on Amazon, in Kindle and print editions, at a modest price.

This year the North Leeds Charity Beer Festival, organised by The Rotary Club of Roundhay, will have a Tour de France theme. Seventeen beers brewed specially for Le Grand Depart will take their place alongside beers from 11 Leeds’ breweries. There will also be a selection of Yorkshire ciders, English country wines and some exciting bottled beers from Ossett’s Bier Huis. The Festival runs Friday 30th and Saturday 31st May at St Aidan’s Community Hall on Roundhay Road. The Hall is set over two floors, so there is the

space to savour your beer in peace or enjoy the great entertainment. A number of exciting bands will be performing, including the Blind Dead McJones Band on Friday night. I have lost count of the number of times we have driven past El Bareto on Gledhow Valley Road and thought ‘must eat there’ and promptly forgotten again. Well, we finally made it! And, having been there once, it’s a dead cert that we will go back!

El Bareto is a little Spanish oasis in North Leeds, regularly frequented by the local Spanish community. As we pushed our way into the bar we felt as though we had gatecrashed a private party! It was just abuzz. We resisted joining in and made our way downstairs to the restaurant, which was quieter. El Bareto, very much a family affair, has been operating from this little corner of North Leeds for over nine years and has a lovely friendly vibe. The décor is very ‘rustic taverna’ with dark, homemade tables and benches, terracotta rough plaster walls and flickering candles. We were immediately approached by Shaun and given a quick run down of how things worked and how many dishes to order – it’s so easy to get carried away when you’re

talking tapas. We were advised to order between four and six dishes between us, which was not easy, given the choice. But we were soon diving into Padron Peppers - small peppers briefly salted and quickly deep-fried. Then there were fabulous grilled king prawns; ratatouille on a perfectly cooked fried egg; and chorizo that was cooked in cider and oh so good. An amazing monkfish special that was apparently quick fried and then steamed, with wonderful m e l t i n g ,

caramelised onions and fresh asparagus on the side followed and, finally, duck with caramelized onions and cheese – so rich and tangy. This was all washed down with an excellent house Rioja. Then I espied an array of dishes arriving at the table next to us, felt decidedly jealous and wanted to start all over again! As they noticed us coveting their food they jokingly invited us to join in and I almost took them up on it! All in all a lovely evening – great, relaxed atmosphere; friendly, efficient service; and lovely food. What more could you ask for? The dishes we chose ranged from about £5 to £12.95 (the monkfish). The meal (excluding wine) cost about £58. Now, having finally made it across the threshold into this little Spanish enclave, that one visit was definitely not enough! I should also mention that there are regular music evenings, which add to the authentic Spanish atmosphere and, if you want to get even further into Spanish culture, there are Spanish classes on Monday evenings! Anne Aitken from Bramhope recently won Lorraine’s ‘Taste Off’, part of the Lorraine programme on ITV, and the prize was the opportunity to have her wonderful Ginger and Orange Cherubs on the patisserie counter at Waitrose supermarkets across Britain! A keen home baker, Anne, a nurse at Street Lane Practice, Roundhay, applied to the Lorraine Taste Off competition when she saw it advertised on the Lorraine show. She knew just the recipe – a firm family favourite she had made for years with her grandma, mother and her two sons. Her recipe was shortlisted, impressing the judges, including actress Debbie Rush who plays

The cherubs are a type of Rascal – a cross between a rock cake, scone and a biscuit. The recipe was passed down from her grandma and is in her mother’s recipe collection, which she started in 1947. It has been refined over the years and today suits her family of gingerholics! As you eat a cherub, the flavours hit you bit by bit. First you taste the ginger and spice. This is followed by orange from fresh chunky orange zest. Raisins and apricots provide additional texture and flavour.

One effect of the wettest Winter on record, albeit one in which temperatures barely touched freezing, has been damage to local roads. Highways have been working flat out to make repairs, but resources are limited. I promised last month that as soon as we had any updates on the proposed new health centre for Alwoodley, I would share it here first with readers of North Leeds Life. Well, after a huge amount of work by the GP practices involved, and support from a whole range of local organisations, and not least Peter, Neil and I, NHS England has recognised the need for this health centre and has found the funding necessary for the project to go ahead. I have no doubt that the coming months will throw up a whole range of challenges that will need addressing. As Alwoodley Councillors we will continue to do all we possibly can to ensure that this new Health Centre is delivered as successfully and as quickly as possible.

Finally, as we are now in a new Leeds City Council financial year, we have a newly replenished pot of money available to make small grants to community groups in need of funds to set up a project or to buy a particular piece of equipment. For example, last year we were able to help the Friends of Wigton Moor Wood buy a gazebo and to cover some of the transport costs of the Moortown Social Club Over 60’s Section on their days out, to name just two from a long list of worthy beneficiaries. A Car After last year, the organisers of this year’s Otley Show are hoping for a dry, warm day on 17th May!

Rally for Alzheimers Research Lee and Faye Thornton are planning to drive 670 miles in a 24 hour endurance car rally in October this year to raise money for Alzheimers Research UK.

Councillors Support Social Action Project Together for Peace’s (T4P) Active Citizens’ Social Action Project, a scheme helping people to make positive changes in their communities by giving them the tools, knowledge and experience to tackle problems, recently received £3,000 funding from local Councillors Sharon Hamilton, Jane Dowson and colleagues on the Inner North East Area Committee.

The project is delivered by T4P and various other bodies in conjunction with the British Council. Groups of 30 young people initially take part in workshops and residentials, then go on to create and deliver social action projects tackling issues in their neighbourhoods. There are around 80,000 ‘Active Citizens’ from diverse communities in over 30 countries, including 21 communities in the UK. T4P asked the Area Committee to fund support for participants in Chapeltown and the surrounding area. The Committee’s funding will provide 40 hours of mentoring spread over six months. T4P has been involved in a number of pioneering projects,

including The Leeds Poverty Challenge, and was awarded the ‘Partner of the Year’ award by the Council in 2012 in recognition of their excellent work in the city. “Together for Peace does some brilliant work helping communities to address their own problems, and promoting social cohesion in deprived communities”, said Councillor Jane Dowson. “The Active Citizens Project has been running in Leeds for three years and many communities have relished the opportunity to work on this scheme. Early Aviation in Roundhay Park A blue plaque on the wall of Tesco’s Roundhay Road store is the only remaining physical reminder of the important role played by Leeds in the history of aviation.

obert Blackburn (1885 – 1955) who built his first monoplane in Leeds in 1909, opened his aircraft factory, the Olympia Works, on what is now the Tesco site in 1914. The planes built there were hauled up the road to Roundhay Park and test ﬂown from Soldiers’ Field. Planes continued to be produced there until the 1930s and the factory was reopened during the second world war. Professor Robert Blackburn, grandson of the man who put Leeds on the aviation map, will talk about the life and times of his grandfather and early aviation in Yorkshire on Monday 12th May, 7pm at St Andrews

Moortown Community Group Update The Moortown Community Group (MCG) committee meets every month to discuss and action a variety of topics of interest to the local community. One of these is the issue of parking at Moortown Corner. The two shopping parades provide parking and pedestrian access together, thich is potentially dangerous. Last year an elderly lady was knocked down by a reversing car. MCG has tried to liaise with both LCC and the shop owners (who own the frontage) on several occasions. Local councillors are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. Everybody will have noticed the displays of Spring flowers on our grass verges. These have been planted by Moortown In Bloom volunteers with bulbs donated by LCC. We have the opportunity to obtain more bulbs, so if you know a piece of land that would benefit from planting, do let us know. We are also responsible for the planters at the upper end of Moortown Corner, the rockery at the top of Scott Hall Road and the wildflower patch at the junction of the Ring Road and Harrogate Road. This year, the centenary of WW1, we will also plant poppies in the wildflower patch. Other topics discussed on a regular basis include a community noticeboard, ‘Welcome to Moortown’ signs, and transport.

In May, Headingley sees its first ‘Festival of Ideas’ – a series of community-led events to inspire debate and discussion, with the theme ‘Cycles’. The Festival is all about creative ideas that may not necessarily lead to anything (although some might). The main purpose is to tap into the joy of ideas, debate and discussion, and to appeal to the wide variety of people who live in Headingley, and to all age groups. The Festival is the brainchild of Richard Crossley, recently awarded an OBE for services to neighbourhoods and social housing tenants. “I thought something like this would go down really well in Headingley”, said Richard. “To create a space

for ideas and debate in a community with a whole variety of ways of exploring ideas.” The festival runs from 6th – 24th May with an interesting and varied programme, ranging from family cycle rides (11th May) taking in the homes of Headingley literary figures, to seminars, discussions and entertainment. ‘Breaking the Cycle of Violence’ is the theme for three seminars and discussions on Peacekeeping without Weapons, Lad Culture, and Bridging the Gap (between Israel and Palestine). Sam Watts gives a piano recital at HEART, interspersed with thoughts and ideas about music. Trio Literati performs ‘What! An idea?’, and Free Range Choir presents ‘Sing Freedom’, a personal story in song and narrative on the liberation struggle in South Africa. Shire Oak Woodcraft Folk are running a ReCycle Fete on Saturday 17th May with music, mud, paint, games and food guaranteed! And, Year 10 and 11 pupils from Lawnswood, Cardinal Heenan and Abbey Grange schools go head to

head in a debating competition on 19th May. Students Raise Funds for Village Schools in India and Nepal

Opportunity Knocks Event Success

One-teacher schools, known as ‘Saraswati Vidyalayas’ are transforming the lives of children in remote villages in India and Nepal. Now, thanks to a donation from students at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), another five can be built.

Student members of the Hindu and Sikh societies at GSAL recently presented a cheque for £5,000 to the charity Saraswati Vidyalaya, bringing the sum raised over the last six years to a total of £10,000. The main fundraising event each year has been the Diwali Show, organised by the Hindu and Sikh student faith leaders. This event brings the whole community together for an evening of Indian food, music and dance. “Education is empowerment, and through your sponsorship of

The second Opportunity Knocks event organised by the Family Hub and Programming team at Leeds Jewish Welfare Board and held at the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Community Centre, featured motivational speakers and presented over thirty stalls, including information and advice on slimming, healthcare and guidance for older people. Motivational speaker and Paralympian medallist Elizabeth Wright, who won bronze in Atlanta (1996), and silver and bronze in Sydney (2000), explained how she achieved Olympian success by sheer determination and self-esteem. “No matter what life throws at you, and no matter where you start from, you can get out there and succeed. I am living proof that you can! If you have a dream, then as long as you have the determination and believe in your gut that you can attain your dream, then what’s stopping you? The answer is, absolutely nothing!”

The first Oakwood Day will take place on Saturday 3rd May, 9.30am – 3pm, and will commemorate the merger of Oakwood into the City of Leeds just over 100 years ago, alongside the excellent news that the Heritage Lottery Fund has donated £100,000 to the Oakwood Clock Project. As well as full restoration of the clock, the project includes an exciting Oral History strand, and will be launched by Councillor Tom Murray, Mayor of Leeds, at Oakwood Library (junction of Oakwood Lane and Roundhay Road) at 2pm on Oakwood Day. The Day will also feature an arts and crafts market with music around theDancing clock. 110x153mm.ai

Led by OTRA, in partnership with the local history group of the University of the Third Age and pupils from Roundhay School, the oral history project will involve interviewing people and inviting them to share their stories about the Clock and the surrounding area. The resultant stories will be published and, in addition to being available for sale, will be buried in a time capsule at the base of the Clock. OTRA will work with the History Club at Roundhay School and with Leeds Museums and Galleries to create educational resources for the local primary schools. A heritage trail with guided walks around the area will also be created. Plans to mark the 40th anniversary of Leeds Concord Interfaith Fellowship are underway, thanks to support from local Councillors Jane Dowson, Sharon Hamilton and their colleagues who provided £300 in MICE money. Concord is the longest running interfaith organisation in the city and one of the oldest in the country. A wide variety of projects and events is planned to celebrate. One of these will be led by Leeds Women of Faith, who are encouraging women across the city to come together to create a commemorative textile banner, to celebrate not only the anniversary, but also Leeds multi-faith and multi-cultural diversity. The project will last a year with workshops being held across

the city. The completed banner will be shown at various interfaith events before being displayed at Leeds City Museum for six months. It will also be shown at Leeds Story Gallery and various places of worship. Councillors Dowson and Hamilton hope that the project will help to bring together women from a variety of social and religious backgrounds to develop their skills, learn about each

other’s faiths and cultures and make new friends. The Councillors went along to a recent session to have a go with some of the women taking part. “I am excited to see this project with Concord and Leeds Women of Faith develop over the next few months”, said Councillor Sharon Hamilton. “It will bring together women from a variety of backgrounds to work together and learn from each other.”

A Fruitful Community Project A previously unused patch of Meanwood grassland is to be turned into a wonderful community garden and orchard. Councillors Sharon Hamilton, Rebecca Charlwood, Alex Sobel and colleagues on the Inner East Area Committee have provided £1,200 for the establishment of the Meanwood Community Orchard, which will be organised by Transition Meanwood, a community-led group helping to improve the local area by running green projects. All of the trees have been purchased by ward members, and planted by volunteers. The Council’s Parks & Countryside Service also assisted in setting up the project. “Transition Meanwood have done a fantastic job creating this

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON Symbolic of Spring and Summer days is the Swallow, now arrived for the breeding season. Glossy and fork-tailed with thin tail streamers, swallows are blue-black with a red throat and forehead and white underneath. Swallows prefer cultivated lowlands. Insects, their favourite food, are caught on the wing as, typically, they swoop low among grazing cattle in elegant fluid flight. Farmyard barns and sheds are a characteristic nesting site, but they also frequent isolated barns high in the Dales as well as domestic garages and outbuildings in and near villages. Their cheerful, loud, liquid â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;switswit-switâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; call enlivens these

UNDER THE SKIN DIRECTED BY: JONATHAN GLAZER STARRING: : SCARLETT JOHANSSON, JEREMY MCWILLIAMS, LYNSEY TAYLOR MACKAY CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 108 MINS This fantastically strange, disorientating and utterly original picture might seem, at first glance, to share its premise with a mostly forgotten mid-90s daft Sci-Fi horror B movie called Species. Both films feature aliens in attractive female human form seductively luring men to their doom. That’s where the similarities end, however. Rest assured, Under The Skin is nothing like Species. This is a film I’ve been excited about for some time as it’s the long awaited new feature from Jonathan Glazer, director of the superb, genrewarping Sexy Beast, although an appreciation of the director’s previous work doesn’t prepare you for Under The Skin, which is nothing like Sexy Beast either. Okay, let’s just say that Under The Skin is pretty much unlike anything else out there. It’s a haunting, disturbing, creepy, sexy and unnerving piece that worms its way into your consciousness and rattles around in there making you feel odd for quite some time afterwards. With its Glasgow setting, the film manages to seem both out of this world and down to earth. Much of it is taken up with Johansson’s alien cruising the Scottish streets in a white van, on the prowl for lone men whom she ensnares and then ...

devours? Collects? Drains of life essence? As with much in the film, what occurs isn’t explicitly clear but it’s certainly unsettling. The only other main character is the enigmatic presence of a

familiar seem strange and intimidating. This is achieved through Johansson’s wonderfully otherworldly performance and Glazer’s cannily counter intuitive direction

man on a motorcycle whom we see at the opening of the film seemingly procuring a human body for the alien to inhabit. The relationship between them remains ambiguous; is he another alien guiding her way on earth? It might be he’s there to protect and clean up after her but when she allows one of her victims to escape he appears to become a threat. What the film does brilliantly is show us our world as if viewed through the alien’s eyes, making the familiar seem strange and intimidating. This is achieved through Johansson’s wonderfully otherworldly performance and Glazer’s cannily counter-intuitive direction. The camerawork is largely cinema verite, recalling the bleak and grimy socialrealist style of Mike Leigh or Ken Loach and, when observing ordinary folk in street scenes that could be any homogenised city centre in the UK, seems like a natural history documentary, lacking only a voiceover by David Attenborough. This Lo-Fi visual motif is punctuated by

highly stylised, surrealistic scenes that take place in the alien’s lair, which many have called Kubrickian. Given her celebrity and sex symbol status, the casting of Johansson is a masterstroke and I doubt the film could have worked as well with anyone else in the role. The incongruity of seeing her (often filmed on hidden cameras) rendered oddly anonymous by a dark wig and tatty fake fur coat, wandering around a place much like the Merrion Centre, is bizarrely effective. The closest reference point for Under The Skin would be Nic Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth, which Glazer acknowledges as an influence, and Johansson’s alien shares an air of chillingly dispassionate detachment with David Bowie’s character in that film.

Making the alien relatable is quite a stretch, unable as she is (initially, at least) to comprehend or experience human emotion. However, perhaps due to the melancholic note that underpins her travails, we come to see more than a predatory monster and by the end we’re acutely concerned for her safety. The film has received a great deal of appreciation from critics but I can’t see it becoming widely loved by audiences as (and I’m aware this phrase may smack of cultural snobbery and condescension) it might just be too weird for most people. As for myself, Under The Skin absolutely knocked me for six and it’s one of the most unusual, beguiling and unique things I’ve seen for quite some time.

The renowned kora player Toumani Diabaté recently recorded an album of duets with his son Sidiki, the instrument’s emerging star, and they are playing at the Howard Assembly Room on Friday 6th June.

Descended from a line of griots - custodians of the ancient oral traditions of West Africa’s Mandé people - Toumani and Sidiki are significant names in the annals of African music. potential as a virtuosic instrument. Toumani has taken it further, weaving together bass lines, ancient melodies and astonishing improvisations. The Talks: Don’t Look Behind You Daniel Pearson – Escape Acts EP Escape Acts, the new EP from singer-songwriter Daniel Pearson, was released recently. The four new studio recordings follow his second album Mercury State, which earned international acclaim last year. In the last two years, which included releasing two albums, Daniel has received a string of rave press reviews, gained thousands of fans through word of mouth and Twitter, over 10,000 download sales, and received widespread airplay. His music has been played on TV shows and he has toured the UK & USA - all while maintaining an independent, DIY approach. The EP’s infectious lead single Lost My Way reboots 60s pop with sharp riffs and a stomping kick drum and showcases keen and considered songwriting and arrangement sensibilities which recall Crowded House or the countrysoul of Ryan Adams, tied together by deft lyrical skill and great production by Ed Heaton at Eiger Studios in Leeds.

This new EP is a departure from his previous album, released in January 2013, which was a stark acoustic recording based around the recession. This new EP is far more positive, up-beat and pop sounding. Daniel is very prolific and is constantly writing. He is playing the Live at Leeds Festival this month, when no doubt his huge Twitter following (which seems to gain more fans by the day) will turn out in force to soak up more of the music that has been sending them into raptures! “Twitter has been really good for me”, said Daniel. ”It’s great to have people respond to my music and so nice to hear positive things. I’m so fortunate to have a job that I love and I love having that contact with people.”

This new single by 2 Tone revivalists The Talks is a jaunty slice of vintage-feeling Ska in the fine tradition of The Specials, The Beat and The Selecter et al. Choppy guitars and pleasingly swirling Hammond carry a tune with plenty of bump and bounce and more than enough “mmm chh, chh” bang for your buck. Not 100% sure about the rap breakdown that appears shortly after the midway point which, judging from the video, seem to be delivered somewhat half-heartedly, but generally Don’t Look Behind You is a tasty, upbeat, poppy skank reminiscent of the best of 70’s era Ska-Punk. There’s a propulsive energy to The Talks’ sound which suggests the band has little trouble getting a crowd moving and I’d be keen to see them live. Unfortunately, the band aren’t hitting Leeds on their upcoming UK tour but if you feel like breaking out your porkpie hat, braces and DMs and cracking on with the old two-step it might be worth making the trip to Sheffield or York to catch the guys on stage.

Countdown to Le Grand Depart The Etape du Dales Lizzie Armitstead described Yorkshire as the ‘best cycling destination in the world!’ and what better way to experience it than by taking part in the Etape du Dales? This is one of the most popular and challenging sportives in the UK and one of the country’s top ten rides. Organised as a sponsorship event by the Dave Rayner Fund, it is a day-long ride covering 112 miles (180km) of punishing terrain. The Fund, which was set up in 1995 to provide financial assistance to aspiring young riders, was named after Dave Rayner, one of Britain’s best young professional cyclists in the late 80s and early 90s, until his career was tragically cut short following his death (age 27) outside a Bradford nightclub. Everyone talks about the Etape du Tour as one of the most grueling cycle rides around, but we have been assured that parts of the Etape du Dales are every bit as difficult as the French Etape mountain stages.

Every year about 1,000 intrepid cyclists take part and it requires an excellent level of fitness, taking in as it does major climbs as well as steep and technical descents. Starting and ending in Threshfield, just outside Grassington, lovely country lanes soon give way to killer climbs – like the beast that is Buttertubs, the mightly Fleet Moss, the punishing leg to Nateby, and the climb at Tan Hill to reach the highest and possibly the most isolated pub in England. Then there’s speeding down to the Moorcock Inn, the tough climb up Garsdale Head and the endless undulations of Silverdale, not to mention other famous ascents like Mallerstang, the Coal Road, Newby Head and Halton Gill. The reward is stunning Dales scenery, the satisfaction of completing one of the hardest cyclo-sportives in the country, and raising money for a good cause - the Dave Rayner Fund. Of course, the Yorkshire Dales can be as hostile as they are beautiful. The weather can change in an instant and with very little shelter across the tops of the moors, you could find yourself in serious trouble if you’re not properly equipped. Tempted? An Etape du Tour Experience! Last year, in a moment of madness, I decided to take on the Etape du Tour – a 130km leg of the Tour de France through The Alps. The cycling brand Rapha contacted me to see if I’d do it, in an attempt to encourage more women to take part. On my spikesandheels.com blog I constantly champion women in sports. I run, I box, I do Pilates, but I definitely wasn’t a cyclist, so this would be a special kind of challenge.

I got on my bike and started training and quickly realized, cycling was not for the faint hearted. I spent weeks thinking simply not falling off was an achievement, but at some point I realised I’d have to get serious about tackling hills - I mean, the leg of the Tour I’d be doing covered six mountains! I’m a Leeds lass but live in London, where decent hills aren’t easily accessible. It was time to make a pilgrimage to the hills of God’s Own County. I packed my bags and prepped myself for a weekend of riding, Yorkshire-style. Prior to this, my rides had consisted of a lot of distance, but no real inclines. This would be a test to see how I could handle the hills. I set out optimistically, little did I know that by the end of that day, the hills would almost break me. I found out later that some of the hills we took on that day are in some sort of ‘100 Greatest Hills of the UK’ cycling masochist manual. As I tried to ascend one, I felt pain searing through my thighs as my legs gradually got slower and slower. I felt as though I were pedaling through mud. Then my legs came to a complete stand still mid-pedal stroke. Then I started going backwards! My upper body felt so weak, I could barely hold on to the handlebars. Sweat was pouring off me from everywhere, even my shins – who sweats from their shins?! ‘This is what being close to death must feel like’, I thought to myself.

After a bit of walking, some crawling, some crying, a mini-tantrum, threatening to throw my bike in a hedge, then eventually getting back on it, I did indeed make it up that hill. Not only that, but a couple of months later, as I was on the final climb of the Etape du Tour – a brutal 16km long incline of about 20%, I thought back to that day on that Yorkshire hill that nearly broke me and thought ‘Give me your best France – you ain’t got nothin’ on Yorkshire!’ With the Tour de France starting in Yorkshire this year, it’s such a great opportunity for us to see these incredible athletes up close and personal. Le Tour de Roundhay The fun filled Tour de Roundhay at Roundhay School, Old Park Road on 22nd June (12 – 5pm) continues to develop. Cycling activities for children are being organised by West Yorkshire Track Cycling and Bikeability. There will be track races, skill tests and mini time trials for different age groups (including U-5s!), on the school field and off-road paths. Details are available through local primary schools. Leeds Cycling Campaign is organising several rides for adults (16+). These will be tailored to different abilities. Children aged 12-15 can take part in the adult rides if they

Leeds Petanque Club Shoots for Top Spot Leeds Petanque Club won the Leeds North/York Petanque trophy for 2013. The club has been playing at the Richmond House School playing fields on Glen Road, Far Headingley, for eight years and is very well established. It has a whole programme of events planned for this year, including the Waterfront Festival on 28th / 29th June, in conjunction with its sponsors Brasserie Blanc, and the Kirkstall Festival on Saturday 12th July. Many in-club competitions are arranged throughout the season and members now play Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm, and Sundays from 11am â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 1pm. Radiotherapy Can Cure Cancer The Leeds Cancer Centre at St James’ Hospital is one of Europe’s largest cancer treatment facilities, serving

Radiotherapy, widely used in cancer treatment, is one of its core services. Although less well known than chemotherapy, it can and does cure cancer. Second only to cancer surgery, radiotherapy is used in 40% of cases where cancer is cured, and in many of these it is the primary treatment used.

The Radiotherapy Department has become nationally and internationally recognised for pioneering radiotherapy treatment. Support from the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation and the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal has enabled the radiotherapy team to pioneer new technology and techniques in more targeted treatments, such as intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and image guided radiotherapy (IGRT). These new ways of delivering radiotherapy are transforming the lives of patients as cancer

cells are targeted more precisely, increasing cure rates. And, patients experience fewer side effects. These innovations also allow patients with potentially curable lung cancer, who previously had no treatment options, to be successfully treated using a technique called stereotactic ablative body-frame radiotherapy (SABR). Leeds has pioneered this technique and been able to offer a chance of potentially curative treatment to the people of Yorkshire and beyond. But there is still more to do to increase the number of people being cured with radiotherapy. New technology and software is expensive and cannot all be funded by the NHS. As part of the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal, a radiotherapy equipment fund has been set up. Entry for the Ilkley Triathlon on 21st September, run by the Leeds Bradford Triathlon club, opens 1st May. Last year the event sold out in just four days and had a record number of entries. Held at the Ilkley Lido, the sprint distance course is an ideal event for beginners, with an indoor swim, scenic 15km bike ride, followed by 5km run. Last year’s race was nominated in the top three races with under 500 entries for the UK, and has been a previous winner. Now well established and in its 22nd year, it is now a fixture in the local sporting calendar. It’s a great event to participate in either as an individual or as part of a team. The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has reclaimed a national title last won by the school in 2012 – England Netball U16 National Schools Champions. For the second year running GSAL was represented at the national final in all three age categories – U14, U16 and U19. The U16s clinched the trophy with a hard fought 7-6 win in their final match against The Fallibroome Academy, while the U14s and U19s finished as runners up in their competitions. “It was a fantastic team effort from every member in the squad”, said Cath Johnson, head of netball at GSAL. “Winning a national competition is an unbelievable experience for the girls and having three teams in the finals is exceptional.”

Another Successful Rotary Technology Tournament Despite lower registration, the eighth Annual Technology Tournament run by Leeds Rotary Clubs was a great success and very enjoyable for all concerned. Thirty-two teams descended on the John Charles Stadium. The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councilor Tom Murray was there along with the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, who presented the trophies. The winning schools, in the categories Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, were Cockburn School, Silcoates School, and Pudsey Grangefield respectively, and the Innovation Prize was awarded to Farnley Academy. The students had an enjoyable

and challenging day. The task that they were set tested the students’ knowledge and ingenuity, as well as their manual skills and ability to work in a team. They also had to produce a ‘portfolio’ documenting their ideas and designs. Teams of four tackled designing, developing, building and testing a model of a rescue module, intended to carry equipment across a ravine on an aerial ropeway. The vehicle had to be made from strip

wood, dowel, cardboard, glue etc. The nine Rotary Clubs in the Leeds Group generously sponsored the event and acted as judges. The trophies were sponsored by Woodhall Hills Golf Club. See www.rotary-technology-leeds. org for more details.
