CHARLES TURNER THACKRAH (1795-1833) DOCTOR, RESEARCHER, REFORMER
‘The employment of young children in any labour is wrong’. So wrote Charles Turner Thackrah at a time when thousands of children in Leeds, many aged only six or seven, were roused from their beds at dawn, hurried to the mills to begin work at half past five or six, and kept there till late at night, with hardly a break. Fragile, vulnerable men, women and children had become, he said, ‘yokefellows to iron and steam’, enslaved by the mill engines. His passionate words, his documented research on occupational diseases, helped to bring about change. His life was short and contentious, plagued by illness, but his influence spread far; and had a significant impact on medical training in his home town of Leeds, where he was a founder of the first School of Medicine. e was born in 1795, the only

For too long, the only way many people could access the additional care and support they needed as they grew older was to sell the family home and dip into their assets to pay for it. hankfully, the government’s agenda to drive innovation into the provision of health and social care and increase the level of ‘personalisation’ has started to generate some positive results. Increasingly, providers are looking at how they can tailor their services to the needs of their clients, so that there’s a real choice and people no longer have to be shoe-horned into what’s available. Instead of having to move into a care home and pay an This all-inclusive weekly fee to cover accommodation and services model has (some of which you may not want or need), several providers numerous are developing some exciting advantages alternatives locally. One example is Westward and you Care, which now provides what it calls ‘independent living’ retain your apartments with care and support at two of its locations in assets North Leeds - Headingley Hall (Headingley) and Southlands (Roundhay). Located next to the company’s existing care homes in these locations, these fully equipped apartments (complete with kitchens, bathrooms and on-site concierge service, lounge, restaurant and a range of other facilities) are available for clients to buy. Clients with no care needs can live completely independently in their apartment, paying only for the services they use, but with the reassurance that help and support is on hand 24 hours a day should they need it. Meanwhile, clients

with greater care or nursing needs can access exactly what they need, when they need it. This model has numerous advantages – you own your own home, so you retain your assets; you don’t have to pay to rent; and, only accessing services such as nursing, care, meals, laundry etc. when required, substantially reduces the fees you would pay for full time care. An added bonus is that the company buys the apartment back when you no longer need it. “When we started to delve deeper into what our clients and potential clients wanted, a clear pattern emerged – for every client that needs round the clock care and support, there are more people that want to feel safe and secure, and would like companionship
and freedom from the worries of running a house, but would rather maintain their independence for as long as possible”, said Peter Hodkinson, Managing Director, Westward Care “My view is that later life is a time to broaden your horizons, not limit them. This has been the case for many of the clients that live in the 25 luxury apartments at our Headingley Hall location. Evidence shows that taking advantage of the wellbeing, social, leisure and community facilities on offer means they are staying active in body and mind for longer.” The show home for Westward Care’s 23 luxury new independent living apartments at Southlands on Wetherby Road opens in early November and five more apartments are being built at Headingley Hall (available Spring 2015). This year’s Leeds Voice Day – ‘Ways with Words: Success at Interviews and Presentations’ – is on Friday 21st November, 1.30 – 4pm at HEART Bennett Road Headingley. ‘Ways with Words’ is an opportunity to learn and practice key techniques that will help you become a more vital and engaging speaker. Irish broadcaster, director and writer Neil Donnelly (back by popular demand), will lead the session. His 2012 Voice Day workshop was hugely enjoyed and highly
acclaimed by participants. An inspiring, charismatic teacher, Neil strongly believes that: “Everybody has something individual to offer. Practicing in a ‘safe’ workshop environment shows you how to speak more vividly; how to cut out the thistle, daisy and dandelion; how to ‘tell it your way’ with conviction and vitality.”

Traditionally, Christmas is the time of year when thousands of families incorporate a trip to the theatre into their seasonal celebrations. This year in Leeds you have great choices – there’s plenty of ‘He’s behind you!’ at City Varieties and The Carriageworks, and West Yorkshire Playhouse presents Christmas shows that will enchant audiences of all ages.
IT’S PANTO ROCK ‘N’ ROLL AT CITY VARIETIES Following hot on the heels of the successes of Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Aladdin, the Rock ’n’ Roll Panto returns to City Varieties in December with Peter Rowe’s Dick Whittington. You can expect all the traditional elements of a family pantomime, with lots of audience interaction and heaps of corny gags – all soundtracked by classic pop and soul hits from the 60s, 70s and beyond. We have always been amazed at the talented cast of actor-musicians, who leap seamlessly from their character roles to become part of the band, performing all vocals and playing an array of instruments live on stage. And, let’s not forget the legendary ‘Rock Fight’ at the end of the show (now with added boulders!) that thrills Leeds audiences every year.
SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS AT THE CARRIAGEWORKS The Carriageworks’ production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs promises all the essential ingredients of a great pantomime. Headlining the cast are Jez Edwards and Jonathan Ansell. Christmas at the Carriageworks just wouldn’t be Christmas without Jez! This year he’s back to create more comedy clowning and chaos as Muddles. Jonathan Ansell shot to fame in pop-opera band G4 in the first series of The X Factor and since then has rarely been out of the spotlight. He will play the perfect panto prince in this new production of Snow White, which will incorporate great special effects and, of course, seven dwarfs full of mischief and merriment! Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs runs from 5th December until 10th January. Tickets are available from 0113 224 3801 and www. carriageworkstheatre.org.uk

RAYMOND BRIGGS’ FATHER CHRISTMAS RETURNS TO THE PLAYHOUSE Following last year’s success, this co-production with the Lyric Hammersmith and Pins and Needles returns to West Yorkshire Playhouse. Raymond Briggs’ ‘Father Christmas’ is a stunningly visual show for ages 2-6. It is packed full of fun, giggles and wonderful surprises. Briggs’ magical story is brought vividly to life using song, live music and puppetry. Look out for surprises around every corner with hidden hatches, secret doors and a truly magical set. Bloomin’ Christmas! Father Christmas awakes from a dream of summer sun only to realise that it’s bloomin’ Christmas Eve and the start of his longest night of the year. He gathers his reindeer and prepares his sleigh, beginning the long journey into the snowy night to deliver presents to sleeping children all over the world. But things don’t run smoothly! Father Christmas runs from 22 November – 3 January. Performances vary with shows at 10.30am, 12.30, 2.30 and 6pm. Tickets (£10-£12) available from 0113 213 7700 or www. wyp.org.uk
SLEEPING BEAUTY AT THE VILLAGE The Village Hotel on Otley Road is staging Sleeping Beauty on 30th November (plus 7th, 14th, & 21 – 24th December) A full cast will perform the story of Sleeping Beauty. Join Giggles the Jester, Fairy Nuff and their friends. The show starts at 12 noon with Christmas lunch before the performance, and fun and games for everyone. JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH One small boy and six enormous garden bugs land on the Courtyard stage at West Yorkshire playhouse from 5th December – 24 January, when Max Webster directs this captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl’s James And The Giant Peach by David Wood. Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker are spiteful and nasty. They hate James and love to show him just how much. But one afternoon James meets a strange old man who offers him a magical solution to all of his problems. Little does James Henry Trotter know but the greatest adventure of his life is about to begin.
Using storytelling, stage magic and Fly Davis’ wonderful designs, James and The Giant Peach brings Dahl’s magical adventure to life. Performances vary, with shows at 10am, 1.30 and 7pm. Tickets (£15-£18) are available from 0113 213 7700 or www.wyp. org.uk

Arts & Culture
If you missed The National Theatre’s award-winning comedy ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ last year, here’s your chance to catch it, or catch it again, as it returns to Leeds Grand Theatre from 4th – 8th November. It has just celebrated being the longest running show in the Theatre Royal Haymarket’s 192-year history! een by over a million people worldwide, this internationally-acclaimed smashhit is on its longest ever UK & Ireland Tour. Nicholas Hytner’s (Director of The National Theatre) production tells the hilarious story of Francis Henshall who, fired from his skiffle band, becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother – who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers – but to prevent discovery, he must keep his two guvnors apart. Keep up! Gavin Spokes takes the central role of loveable chancer, Francis Henshall and Norman Pace plays Charlie Clench. The only time a little jealousy crept in was when Gareth got the role of Arthur Doolittle in Pygmalion – Norman has coveted that role for years! “Being part of this National Theatre production is very special to me”, said Norman. “In a way it gives legitimacy to the last 30 years. I’m very proud to represent the National and take this great play around the country. I’m looking forward to Leeds and a packed theatre!”

As with other psychics, the thread linking the most fascinating episodes in Cannon’s life, is the desperation others. - Edward VIII thought a bit of psychic assistance might sort out his predicament. At the start of World War II, members of the military top brass, including those close to Churchill, were even more desperate - a successful German invasion seemed only a matter of time away. The Fosdyke Saga, adapted by Alan Plater from the saga by Bill Tidy with music by Bill Wrigley, will be performed from Tuesday 28th October to Saturday 1st November, 7.30pm at Adel & Ireland Wood Community Centre, New Adel Lane, LS16 6AZ. Created by well-known cartoonist Bill Tidy, The Fosdyke Saga comic strip ran in the Daily Mirror from 1971 – 1985. The play recreates the comic strip characters and is described as ‘a classic tale of struggle, power, personalities ... and tripe’! “STARS presented the play back in 1998 and it proved very popular”, said STARS Chairman, Chris Binns, “so we felt it was a good choice in the run up to Christmas, with comedy, songs, and larger-than-life characters.” There are still some tickets available at £7.50/ £6 concessions. ocal Printmakers Talia Russell and Laura Long have collaborated to organise a new Print Fair at Leeds Corn Exchange on Saturday 1st November. They have gathered together friends and fellow artists to create an exciting event where you’ll find a wide range of fine art printing techniques with a huge variety of themes, together with printed textiles in the form of lampshades, cushions, tea towels and much more. The idea for the Fair came about when Talia and Laura were looking for places to exhibit and sell their work. They decided to setup a Christmas Print Fair to celebrate the wealth of printmaking talent in the region and hope to make it an annual event.
Pictured:
“As Leeds has so many art courses and print studios, setting up a print fair seemed a great way to showcase the work of all our talented local artists”, said Talia. Meet and chat to your local artists, find unique gifts or just spoil yourself! The fair runs from 10am – 6pm on Saturday 1st November. For further information, visit www. leedsprintfair.wordpress.com

Little London in inner city Leeds is one of the most diverse communities in the city. Largely comprising local authority housing built in the 1950s – 1960s, it is home to people of wide-ranging social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. he publication of ‘A Little Bit of History’, funded by the Heritage Lottery, is the culmination of a project undertaken by Little London Arts from 2010 to 2014. Its aims were to discover and share aspects of the history of the area through the experience of residents and former residents. The project was carried out through local research,
interviews, drop-in sessions and various events. Words are combined with images of life in Little London from individuals’ family photo albums. David Greed, long-serving leader of the Orchestra of Opera North, vividly remembers the day in 1989 when he expected to play Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in Grassington with the Sinfonia of Leeds. “It was exciting, and I was looking forward to it. What I didn’t see coming was being asked at very short notice to conduct and direct the entire concert, and become the orchestra’s Music Director!” wenty-five years on, David still leads this remarkable group, having overseen its transformation from a small chamber ensemble to a full-size symphony orchestra. A life spent in the orchestra pit has proved invaluable, allowing him to observe different conductors’ strengths and weaknesses. “With a non-professional orchestra you have to be very clear in everything you do”, said David. “It’s vital to remember that, when a rehearsal starts at 7.30pm on a Monday evening, most of your players have already spent a day at work. It takes patience – especially in the first stage of a rehearsal – but the orchestra’s achievements are an inspiration.” Juggling the Sinfonia with a full-time career doesn’t make for an easy life, so Greed now shares the season with his Opera North colleague Anthony Kraus. The two will collaborate on the Sinfonia’s concert on 8th November at Leeds University’s Great Hall – Kraus accompanying Greed as soloist in Shostakovich’s epic Violin Concerto No 1. The Sinfonia’s repertoire has become far more ambitious – recent programmes have included weighty symphonies by Mahler, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov. Thanks to a generous donation from the Liz and Terry Bramall Trust, and renewed support from the Sinfonia patrons, the orchestra can continue to push the boundaries. David is looking forward to directing his all-time favourite piece, Ravel’s ballet Daphnis and Chloe, on 17th January 2015 at St Edmund’s Church, Roundhay. Woodbine Willie Returns to Leeds Minster ‘Woodbine Willie’ returns to Leeds Minster on Tuesday 4th November in a theatrical performance by Searchlight Theatre Company. The production honours Leeds born poet and priest, Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, affectionately known as Woodbine Willie, and marks the centenary of the First World War. An Anglican priest, he volunteered as chaplain on the Western Front during the First World War. He won the Military Cross for his reckless courage, running into No Man’s Land to help the wounded. This production is based on original interviews with those who knew and loved him. A deep and real concern for his fellow man drove him relentlessly, and he played a vital role on battlefields, in the trenches and then the slums, sharing the love of God, and Woodbine cigarettes at a time when men needed both desperately. The show is the ideal addition to this year’s centenary celebrations, using drama, war poems and music to bring an incredible life to the stage as well as highlighting the horrors of the trenches. ‘Woodbine Willie’ is at Leeds Minster at 7.45pm on Tuesday 4th November. moving story. America is emerging from conflict and trying to find itself, trying to provide life with focus, purpose and a sense of identity. People are returning from war and trying to reintegrate into society.” Bing Crosby’s recording of ‘White Christmas’ was the best selling single of all time and you could be tempted to label it as saccharine, nostalgic, and over emotional, but when you think about when it was written and how people yearned for home and family, you can be excused a bit of nostalgia. And, if you can’t be nostalgic at Christmas, when can you! The show is full of vitality, unashamedly old fashioned and romantic, but it highlights the importance of sharing time with friends and family, caring about and helping people, and having a great time while you do it. The Spirit of Christmas Leeds Male Voice Choir is set to light up Leeds Minster with ‘The Spirit of Christmas’, on Saturday 13th December.
We have planned a cornucopia of Christmas music Beanstalk, the local children’s literacy charity, is part of a new campaign to get all eleven year olds reading well by 2025. Apparently, one and a half million children will reach the age of 11 unable to read well unless action is taken to tackle the reading crisis. alled ‘Read On Get On’, the coalition is made up of teachers, parents, businesses and charities including Save the Children. Last year, 1,128 pupils left primary schools in Leeds unable to read to the required level. The charity currently supports 372 children in over 60 schools across Leeds and Bradford and is currently recruiting and training volunteers to work with children who are falling behind with their reading. The ‘Read On. Get On’ campaign aims to create a nation of strong readers by supporting parents to read with young children; urging people to volunteer to help disadvantaged children improve their reading;

We are delighted to be a part of ‘Read On. Get On.” Beanstalk is currently looking for volunteers to work across Leeds and Bradford. Joined by a host of soloists and guest choirs, the choir will mark the festive season with popular Christmas songs. “We’re delighted to be returning to Leeds Minster after the success of ‘The Best of British’ in June”, said Tim Knight, the choir’s director. “We have planned a cornucopia of Christmas music for the whole family, with well-known Christmas songs, new pieces, traditional carols and a few surprises.” The Spirit of Christmas looks set to be a spectacular fun filled affair for the whole family, with free entry for accompanied children, a host of special guests and even a visit from Santa Claus! The Spirit of Christmas is on Saturday 13th December, 7.30pm at Leeds Minster on Kirkgate. Tickets are available via www.leedsmalevoicechoir. eventbrite.co.uk or 0113 243 1605

When the winners were announced they were ‘shell-shocked – like a rabbit in the headlights’. “They didn’t look like they thought they had won!” said Sue Clifford, CEO of No Offence. “There are no other awards that do this – we are trying to show that people can and do change. David Pilling, Head Chef for Nurture said: “It feels great that the work we do with our clients, and especially the work they do here, has been highlighted nationally and we’re over the moon to have won such an auspicious award.” “Nurture is an intrinsic part of the work we do here at St George’s Crypt and they are thrilled to have won this award “, said Chris Wilson, St George’s Crypt Project Manager. “We are very proud of the charity’s work in establishing a robust and inclusive employment strategy - 92% of the Nurture team has been through the criminal justice system.”

Holt Park Regeneration Project I recently asked the Scrutiny Board (Housing and Regeneration) to consider carrying out an inquiry into the Holt Park Regeneration Project in terms of the potential brownfield site developments that could be brought forward, the mix of housing that could be produced, plus other regeneration benefits. I was concerned that the consultation exercise carried out with local residents had been concluded for some time

JONATHAN PRYOR Headingley Ward
Since being elected in May, I have been thinking about the impact I’d like to make during my time as a Councillor. Leeds City Council’s work towards making Leeds an age-friendly city is really inspiring, and I recently spoke in Council about how we can support older people in our communities who may become isolated and suffer from loneliness or dementia. I am honoured to represent Headingley, one of the most diverse and vibrant corners of Leeds. When speaking to people on the street or in community meetings, I’m often told that they love living in an area which includes families, older people and students too. Headingley’s diversity makes it an amazing place to live. But there are some aspects that may make it harder for families and older people, and that’s what I hope to address. Leeds and Headingley must be a

and things are not progressing at the speed either I or residents would like. A report went to the Scrutiny Board in September and an extract of the report includes the following update: 1. Following the public consultation in late 2013, Asda approached the Council and confirmed a serious interest in reconfiguring their existing store, presenting an alternative redevelopment option which is being explored further. This would involve the acquisition by Asda of Council-owned land. Asda requested access to the land to undertake a survey. It is anticipated that the survey will take place in the Autumn, following which Asda will present their proposals. 2. The involvement of Asda will help to secure a more comprehensive regeneration and development approach to the
safe and happy place for people of all generations and I’ve been looking into ways in which we can build on that. A recent report by the ‘Transport Research Laboratory’ found that pelican crossings did not give enough time for some people to cross the road. Older people and families with children and pushchairs are particularly affected – especially on busy roads like Headingley Lane. I’m working with the Council’s Highways Department, and writing to the relevant Government Minister to see if we can add perhaps three seconds onto crossing times. Small changes like this all contribute to making Headingley and Leeds just that bit closer to being an age-friendly city. 07515400109 jonathan.pryor@leeds.gov.uk www.facebook.com/ HeadingleyCouncillors Twitter: @Jonathan_Pryor
district centre and surrounding land, maximising the benefits to residents and visitors to the area. This is the basis on which work is continuing with Asda to determine the acceptability of their proposal, which will also help to confirm the location and quantum of new housing development. 3. It is anticipated that Asda will share a detailed development proposal with the Council for consideration by March 2015, following which a report will be presented to Executive Board. I have submitted questions to the Scrutiny Board regarding these proposals as I feel that there is no reason why the site identified for housing cannot be progressed in tandem with Asda’s redevelopment proposal. I will continue to keep residents up to date with this issue.

Parliament Week
Member of Parliament for Leeds North West Every year Parliament designates a week of activities aimed at informing people of the way that our democracy works and tries to inspire them to get involved and play their part as a British citizen in having a say in how our country is run. Parliament Week this year (14-20 November) is working in partnership with over 260 organisations from across the UK to put together a programme that includes historical walks, art exhibitions, online debates, panel discussions, school council projects and more.

The recent debate in Scotland, which culminated in the referendum on 18th September, was remarkable in engaging the interest of many who had no previous involvement in politics and the turnout of well over 80% was wonderful to see. It was also a ground-breaking vote in that the electorate included, for the first time in the UK, 16 and 17 year olds. Parliament Week also has a strong focus on young people, and schools are invited to get involved in a variety of ways. This year there is to be a social media campaign called ‘Do Democracy’ aimed specifically at 16 to 24 year olds, to encourage younger people to participate in politics.

I am delighted that a primary school from my constituency will be visiting the House of Commons during Parliament Week. Schools are always welcomed into the Palace of Westminster and I particularly enjoy meeting visiting students and teachers. There is plenty to see and do at Westminster at any time of the year, but during Parliament Week there are extra exhibitions and activities. Free resources and information about Parliament Week are available to schools and to other organisations that are interested in taking part and can be accessed via www. parliamentweek.org/partners/ I and my fellow MPs make every effort to celebrate Parliament Week by making ourselves available for debates and Q&A sessions in schools in our constituencies. CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence
If you struggle to get yourself out of bed in the morning, or just can’t fasten your shoelaces as easily as you used to, it doesn’t mean you need some form of residential care – perhaps all you need is a helping hand in your own home. Sometimes a little bit of help can dramatically improve your quality of life and enable you to maintain your independence and continue to enjoy living in the comfort of your own home. Bluebird Care is available to any adult who needs specific help with everyday tasks around the home. These may include help getting in and out of bed or getting dressed, preparing meals, shopping, washing and ironing, personal hygiene, cleaning, helping with mobility issues and accompanying to appointments or to see friends or relatives. Bluebird Care normally involves one or more visits a day for relatively short periods, possibly up to an hour, to help with everyday tasks. Longer visits are also available, including overnight help or even live-in care. “People are looking for the best quality care for themselves or their loved ones but they need to know they are getting value for money”, said David Brown, Director of Bluebird Care in North Leeds. “At Bluebird Care we provide what people want and carefully measure the way we deliver care. We train, monitor and supervise our staff closely and effectively, and ensure that all staff members have the right temperament and attitude. We will only deliver care at the level we would expect for our own relatives. That way we know we have got it right!” Quality Care should be all about maintaining people’s independence and confidence, not taking it away. “Everyone is unique, and our care packages are tailored to suit each person’s specific requirements, promoting independence and ensuring dignity and respect for the individual”, said David. Bluebird Care’s helping hand enables people to continue to appreciate life, without having to struggle with those little things.

What, another Referendum? The purpose of the Adel Neighbourhood Forum, a recognised body of local volunteers, is to give a renewed sense of ownership to the Adel Community on land development and the issues arising. We are in the process of finalising a draft of The Neighbourhood Plan for Adel, which has been informed by our open days, surveys, focus groups and events. We are grateful for the financial support from ‘Locality’, Leeds City Council and local residents and businesses. The Plan will not only
cover the design, layout, character and mix of proposed housing, but also critical issues arising from such developments such as education provision, traffic, heritage and green issues, community facilities and business support. This Plan will be circulated on-line and in printed form so that the Community can voice any concerns, omissions and amendments. The Plan will then be subject to a referendum and, like recent events in Scotland, a 50% plus majority will be required for the Plan to be accepted. Once accepted it will give The Forum statutory powers to be formally consulted on development issues. We welcome any feedback from residents and those with an interest in Adel. eadingley is pleased to report that the Council has now formally designated the Headingley Neighbourhood Area and Forum. This means that the Forum can now meet to consider the needs and aspirations of the area, and thence to prepare a Headingley Neighbourhood Plan. The purpose of neighbourhood planning is to promote and improve the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of local communities. Residents worked hard to put together our application for designation in only a month. Unfortunately, it took a full six months from the submission of the application to the final designation! Meanwhile, the government has been consulting on neighbourhood planning and other planning matters. The good news is that they plan to streamline the neighbourhood

planning process. The bad news is that they propose to remove, not only from local councils, but also from local neighbourhoods, the very powers that enable them to manage development in the interests of everyone. In the meantime, the Council has given Neighbourhood Forums
a further opportunity to propose development sites. So our Interim Forum has put forward a number of new proposals for protected greenspaces, in Headingley Town Centre and across the Area, often reflecting our historic heritage (like the remnant of the old village green). Headingley is so intensively developed, we have proposed no new housing sites. But we have suggested amendments as to how Headingley Centre might develop. Home & Garden
Growth in the garden has slowed right down and leaves are falling as the days become shorter. Leaves, leaves, and more leaves! There is no need to rush out and tidy up every fallen leaf but it’s wise not to let them sit on the lawn for too long, or to allow deep drifts of leaves to swamp the plants in your borders. A thin layer can be left for worms to pull into their burrows and it can act as an insulating mulch. Collected leaves rot down more slowly than the rest of the compost so it is a good idea to keep them separate. I usually scoop mine into black bin bags and leave them in a corner of the garden to decompose. The process needs air, so a few holes made with a garden fork

will help. In a year or so when it is crumbly and dark, the leaf mould will be a great soil conditioner or mulch and can be dug into the soil or left on the surface. It does not have the high nutrient content of things like manure or compost so it’s not good for feeding hungry plants.

this makes them cheaper, lighter and much easier to plant. So, November is the ideal time to do some planning and re-design your garden. You can move small shrubs and trees to where you want them, and bring in new ones. Planting design starts by choosing the trees and shrubs that will give the garden its structure and then filling the spaces around them with other plants. Remember to leave enough space around each plant for it to grow to its mature size. Look out for some of my favourite small trees: Sorbus ‘Jospeh Rock’ has fiery autumn foliage and long lasting yellow berries, whilst Cercidiphyllum japonicum has interesting leaf colour through the seasons and an amazing candy floss scent in Autumn.

ickey Thompson, the new manager at The Cardigan Arms on Kirkstall Road, is determined to revitalise the pub as a music and arts hub. He has already enlisted the help of Ben ‘Blue’ Waters to establish a regular Blues Club. The first event, held in August and featuring an electric band and four acoustic acts, was a great success. The club will start in earnest in January 2015, on the last Sat of every month. Already there are some great bands lined up, including The Kingstown Bluesband from Hull, supported by Ged Wilson from Bury and Leeds own Martin Plock (31

Jan); the popular Rusty Nails Band, supported by Jake Segrave (Bradford), and Scott Wainwright (28 Feb); and New Haze, a four piece blues/ rock band from Liverpool with support from Gerry Cooper (28 March). These are all top performers with varied styles. The Blues Club nights will be hosted by Ben, who may even play a few songs himself. There will be other genres of music on other nights, and an open mic session every Sunday, as well as DIY gigs, where, for a small refundable deposit, bands and solo acts can run their own gig their way.

It’s film festival time and once again LIFF has unveiled a fantastic programme. The 28th Leeds International Film Festival runs from 5th to 20th November and features the best new and classic cinema from around the world, including comedy, drama, thrillers, animation, documentaries, music film, short film and horror, sci-fi and cult screenings. There are over 250 screenings at venues across the city including Leeds Town Hall, Hyde Park Picture House, Everyman Leeds, City Varieties, Cottage Road Cinema, Vue and more. mong the highlights is the critically acclaimed black comedy ‘Birdman’ or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), one of the most anticipated films of the year. special guests. Singer-songwriter and former frontman of Orange Juice, Edwyn Collins, will appear for a Q&A and performance at Hyde Park Picture House to accompany a screening of ‘The Possibilities are Endless’, about his gradual recovery from a cerebral haemorrhage. Another not to miss is Michelle Heighway’s ‘Mr. Somebody?’ about Huddersfield’s greatest eccentric, Jake Mangle Wurzel. This is a truly compelling portrait of an unforgettably oddball lifestyle.
Michell and Jake will be at The Town Hall on 12th November at 9pm for a Q&A. DJ Gilles Peterson will appear for a Q&A with his film ‘Brasil Bam Bam Bam: The Story of Sonzeira’, about his passionate project to create the Brazilian super-group Sonzeri. The UK Premiere of ‘Heaven Adores You’ examines the life of much-missed US indie musician Elliott Smith. We absolutely can’t wait for ‘Once in a Lifetime’, a music film event where the Town Hall will be transformed with festivalstyle deck chairs to create an atmosphere celebrating concert films. The line-up includes the UK Premiere of a new digital print of Talking Heads’ ‘Stop Making Sense’, and The Who’s ‘The Kids Are Alright’, ‘1991: The Year Punk Broke’ (starring Nirvana and Sonic Youth), and the Beastie Boys’ ‘Awesome; I __ Shot That!’ There will be street food available and drinks by Northern Monk Brewery. Dedicated to horror, sci-fi and cult screenings, Fanomenon’s globally renowned Day of the Dead 8 is headlined by a special

preview of ‘Tusk’, the new horrorcomedy by director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats), while ‘ABCs of Death 2’ leads its legendary allnight horror marathon Night of the Dead XIV. Anime fans will be treated to ‘The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness’, an unprecedented behind-the-scenes documentary about Studio Ghibli. Horror fans will also get to see the UK Premiere of ‘Patch Town’, ‘A Masque of Madness’, ‘Asmodexia’, and the English Premiere of ‘Witching and Bitching’. The Masters of Film Comedy selection plays out over one day, with Bill Murray’s ‘Groundhog Day’ at Leeds Town Hall and Buster Keaton masterpiece ‘The General’, with live musical accompaniment, at City Varieties. To talk about this film is to attempt to navigate one’s way through a minefield of spoilers. If you’ve not yet seen it and managed to go this long without having had it ruined for you, then firstly congratulations and secondly, why haven’t you seen it yet? Adapted from Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel (she also penned the screenplay) Gone Girl is a film that ties its audience in knots that tighten exponentially throughout its running time. Ostensibly presented as a murder mystery, as the layers are peeled back it’s revealed that the troubling themes examined here run deeper than flesh and blood; it’s emotional violence that lies at its dark heart. Nick and Amy Dunne are a married couple. In flashback we see them meet and fall in love, brief glimpses of the halcyon days of their (nauseatingly smug) early courtship and, after their move from New York to Nick’s small Missouri hometown, the inevitable trouble-in-paradise cracks beginning to show. On the morning of their fifth anniversary Amy disappears and Nick is suspected of her murder. Immediately finding himself under scrutiny by the law and at the centre of a media circus, Nick doesn’t exactly appear innocent or, at least, is certainly not as distraught as he should be. In
November_2014_Area_A.indd 60
fact, the presumption of guilt is such that this is less a whodunit and more a how-dunit, his flimsy defence unravelling from the word go and only his twin sister taking him at his word. And that’s pretty much the extent of the plot outline I’m at liberty to offer here. I’ll only say further (and I hope this isn’t a spoiler) that there’s a WTF
framework of a crime thriller we’re given a cruel dissection ofmarriage
moment around the midpoint that will leave you reeling. In bringing this novel to the screen David Fincher is undoubtedly the man for the job. One of the few directors I know who can make sunlight look dark and foreboding, Fincher conducts this psychodrama with the cold,
16/10/2014 09:09
clinical precision we’ve come to expect. Within the framework of a crime thriller we’re given a cruel dissection of relationships, marriage in particular, the roles people are expected to play and what’s going on beneath the surface. How much do we really know about the people we share our lives with and how deep and wide is the gulf between public presentation and perception and private deceit, discord and malice? “What are you thinking? What are you feeling?” asks Nick in voiceover, “What have we done to each other? What will we do?” Ben Affleck (often unfairly underestimated) and Rosamund Pike both put in sterling work as Nick and Amy, managing to make their unsympathetic characters nonetheless compelling, and a
November_2014_Area_A.indd 61
great supporting cast is headed up by Kim Dickens (of TV’s Deadwood and Treme) and Tyler Perry successfully playing against type. Unrelentingly gripping to the last, Gone Girl is masterfully done and Fincher is once again abetted in his dark arts by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross who provide a chilling and menacingly pulsating score. Not least due to the uncomfortable questions it raises, the film resonates for some time after viewing and I’d unreservedly recommend it. A word of warning, however, to married couples who choose to catch a screening on date night; your spouse will likely be eyeing you with wary suspicion afterwards.

Volunteers Needed at St Chad’s Cricket Club
Pictured: Ellie Hopkinson
Planning has already started for the 2015 season. As well as new players and sponsors, the club is also looking for volunteers.
Last September, North Leeds Life ran a small article about Ellie Hopkinson, a 16 year old Adel resident, who was heading to Arctic Norway as one of the youngest members of a British Exploring Society expedition. ow 17, Ellie has returned from spending the Summer in Arctic Norway and would like to thank our readers for their support. “I was overwhelmed by the support I received from friends, I was family and strangers alike”, said Ellie. “Thank you to everyone who overwhelmed helped me reach my fundraising target. by the “The time I spent in the Arctic support I was truly fantastic. We divided our time between scientific study and received from adventure. I had some exciting and memorable times on the icecap friends, family (including falling into a crevasse!), and strangers and scaled some breathtaking peaks. In science we concentrated alike on analysing glacial lake algae in partnership with a local university.
November_2014_Area_A.indd 66
The expedition was everything I expected and more. I have made some friends for life and tested myself in one of the remotest and most beautiful parts of the earth. new £1 million boathouse, situated next to Thwaite Mills in Stourton, recently threw open its doors to rowers from across Leeds. The new facility will be used by both Leeds Rowing Club and Leeds University Boat Club. It includes a boat store for up to 50 boats, changing facilities, a meeting/training room and car parking. The boathouse has been built as the result of a partnership between the University of Leeds, Leeds Rowing Club, British Rowing and Leeds University Union and has been funded by the University, British Rowing, Sport England and WREN, which awards grants for community projects.
“The new boathouse is a fantastic addition to the University’s sporting facilities”, said Rob Wadsworth, Head of Sport and Physical Activity at the University of Leeds. “It is also a great example of local and national organisations coming together to see an important project realised.” David Cottrell, vice chair of Leeds Rowing Club commented: “In practical terms, the new boathouse will mean we are able to increase our membership threefold and bring the sport to many more people of all ages and abilities. It’s fantastic to think that it could help to produce the next generation of stars from the Yorkshire region for Team GB.” Annamarie Phelps, Chairman of British Rowing, said: “This development will enable many

new people to access rowing: students, young people and the local community - from those who merely wish to enjoy access to the waterway, right through to those with aspirations to represent their country at the highest level. I am delighted we have been able to support this project.”

We recently went along to the echoey hall of Leeds Futsal Arena to see Leeds Roller Dolls and seven other teams from around the region do battle in the Great Yorkshire Showdown. stablished in 2007, Leeds Roller Dolls (LRD) were Yorkshire’s first roller derby team and, since gaining membership of the Women’s Flat track Derby Association (WFTDA), they are now skating into the international competitive arena. Although the sport has been gaining recognition and popularity in the last decade or so, its roots can be traced back to the depression era of the 1930s. In those days it was primarily an endurance event with skaters just whizzing around until they dropped. By the 70s things had developed somewhat but it was still less sport and more spectacle, not unlike wrestling with bouts being largely staged. Over time things grew more competitive and those participating in roller derby became determined to re-imagine it as an organised, modern sport leading to the formation of the WFTDA in 2006. Today roller derby is a pretty big deal with over 100 teams in the UK. It’s fast, furious, and wildly exciting. The evolution of the sport to this point has been a distinctly femaleled endeavour, with more and more people attracted to this intensely physical, empowering pursuit for badass women. Previously, the attention the sport received tended to focus on its stylistic trappings; think hot-pants, fishnets and tattoos (a glammed-up, Hollywood version of which was portrayed in Drew Barrymore’s fun 2009 movie, Whip It) but recently those involved have been determined to show that roller derby is about much more than its punk aesthetic and is an inclusive, accessible spectator sport. Roller derby does retain similarities with the punk scene, however (or more accurately, the Riot Grrrl movement) with its fiercely DIY ethos and the fact that it is a sport spearheaded by women who make the rules and call the

shots. As the sport has its origins in the US (due to an abundance of roller rinks in pretty much every town) the structure of gameplay is not unlike American football. However, despite the frequent stoppages and the numerous rules and regulations, roller derby is easy to get on board with and it takes no time at all to pick up on the gist of the action. It is a fast-paced, full contact, all-female sport played on quad roller skates. In a bout each team fields a point scoring skater (called a ‘jammer’) whose object is to lap as many opposing skaters as they can. The remaining skaters work to both block the opposing jammer, and clear a path for their own jammer to help them score points. Over 90 women and girls currently skate in the Leeds Roller Dolls League – at competitive, recreational and junior league levels. The next skater intake is on Sunday 23rd of November, please email recruit@leedsrollerdolls.co.uk for more information, or visit www. leedsrollerdolls.com Make sure you keep an eye on their website and social media for upcoming bouts and get down to support our Roller Dolls!

Three students from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), Andrew Huff, Cathy Wicks and John Greathead, have been awarded Arkwright Engineering Scholarships, identifying them as some of the country’s future leaders in engineering and technical design.
Pony Adoptions and Hope Pastures Experiences A Pony Adoption is £15 and the recipient receives photos and a letter from the animal, plus updates about how it is getting on. There’s a choice of ten ponies, (donkeys or mules) that can be adopted, then you can visit your pony any day between 10am and 3pm. For more details on adoption, visit www.hopepastures.org/ ways-to-adopt
he scholarships provide students of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects with a £600 financial award to enhance their A-level studies, and fund activities to enrich their understanding and experience of engineering. Applicants had to complete a rigorous selection process consisting of a detailed application form, a two-hour aptitude exam and an interview at Sheffield University, a top engineering university. Each Arkwright scholar is matched with an industry sponsor and a mentor, who provides help and guidance to the students. Two of them, John Greathead (sponsored by Controls & Data Services- part of Rolls-Royce Group) and Andrew Huff (sponsored by The Reece Foundation), are considering

applying to study aeronautical engineering and hope to explore this with their sponsors. Cathy Wicks, from Alwoodley, whose sponsor is the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Newcastle University, said: “Being an Arkwright scholar will help me stand out from the crowd when I apply to university, and the scholarship will help me to pay for text books, materials and course fees during sixth form.” Dr Martin Thomas, chief executive of the Arkwright Scholarships Trust, said: “With competition for rewarding jobs becoming ever fiercer, an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship can really help dynamic young people at the start of their journey to be the country’s future leaders in engineering and technical design.”
It’s the best way to get to know the sanctuary’s animals A Hope Pastures Experience is the best way to get to know the sanctuary’s animals. It can be for one or two people (or children) and includes a personal tour of the sanctuary (including ‘behind the scenes’), plus time grooming/looking after one of the horses/ponies/donkeys. It lasts for about an hour, but you can also organise longer visits if you wish. The cost for the hour is £30 (£15 per person).

reland Wood Primary School has successfully revalidated its ‘Healthy Schools Award’. The assessor was impressed with the inclusive school ethos, which supports the school’s ‘whole child’ approach to its pupils. Parents described the school community as ‘a family where everyone is included’. The outdoor space and how it is utilised was highlighted as outstanding. It is well resourced and engaging, promoting physical activity at every opportunity. According to the children “playing outside is the best thing about this school”! All pupils are proud to belong to the school community and went to great lengths to act
as ambassadors for the school, clearly valuing the input they had received. They were happy, confident, engaged, polite and friendly and demonstrated a good knowledge of health and wellbeing. The pupil voice is strong and effective, which is evident in the various pupil voice groups and the strong Investors in Pupils focus. The School Council is an effective key stakeholder with a good structure and the children know what their roles and responsibilities are within the Council. A healthy tuck shop is available twice day a week, with fruit smoothies available at the end of the month – a direct request of the pupils through the School Council.

The Froebelian School in Horsforth recently welcomed paralympic sprinter Lee Whiteley to a special assembly. Lee gave an inspirational talk and hosted a Q&A session about his career as an athlete. The children were keen to find out about the life of an athlete. Lee gave them exercise tips and advice on healthy eating. He then led the children in a sponsored fitness circuit. The money raised will be used to buy sports equipment and support Team GB and Paralympic athletes. Lee’s visit was truly inspirational and left both staff and pupils feeling really motivated. He showed just what could be achieved when you go for it!

Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis. Last year their UK foodbank network fed over 128,000 people. The school decided to support the food bank this year so as to benefit families living in the community.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Paul Mullen feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Paul is
finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
