CHARLES TURNER THACKRAH (1795-1833) DOCTOR, RESEARCHER, REFORMER

‘The employment of young children in any labour is wrong’. So wrote Charles Turner Thackrah at a time when thousands of children in Leeds, many aged only six or seven, were roused from their beds at dawn, hurried to the mills to begin work at half past five or six, and kept there till late at night, with hardly a break. Fragile, vulnerable men, women and children had become, he said, ‘yokefellows to iron and steam’, enslaved by the mill engines. His passionate words, his documented research on occupational diseases, helped to bring about change. His life was short and contentious, plagued by illness, but his influence spread far; and had a significant impact on medical training in his home town of Leeds, where he was a founder of the first School of Medicine. e was born in 1795, the only

For too long, the only way many people could access the additional care and support they needed as they grew older was to sell the family home and dip into their assets to pay for it. hankfully, the government’s agenda to drive innovation into the provision of health and social care and increase the level of ‘personalisation’ has started to generate some positive results. Increasingly, providers are looking at how they can tailor their services to the needs of their clients, so that there’s a real choice and people no longer have to be shoe-horned into what’s available. Instead of having to move into a care home and pay an This all-inclusive weekly fee to cover accommodation and services model has (some of which you may not want or need), several providers numerous are developing some exciting advantages alternatives locally. One example is Westward and you Care, which now provides what it calls ‘independent living’ retain your apartments with care and support at two of its locations in assets North Leeds - Headingley Hall (Headingley) and Southlands (Roundhay). Located next to the company’s existing care homes in these locations, these fully equipped apartments (complete with kitchens, bathrooms and on-site concierge service, lounge, restaurant and a range of other facilities) are available for clients to buy. Clients with no care needs can live completely independently in their apartment, paying only for the services they use, but with the reassurance that help and support is on hand 24 hours a day should they need it. Meanwhile, clients

with greater care or nursing needs can access exactly what they need, when they need it. This model has numerous advantages – you own your own home, so you retain your assets; you don’t have to pay to rent; and, only accessing services such as nursing, care, meals, laundry etc. when required, substantially reduces the fees you would pay for full time care. An added bonus is that the company buys the apartment back when you no longer need it. “When we started to delve deeper into what our clients and potential clients wanted, a clear pattern emerged – for every client that needs round the clock care and support, there are more people that want to feel safe and secure, and would like companionship

and freedom from the worries of running a house, but would rather maintain their independence for as long as possible”, said Peter Hodkinson, Managing Director, Westward Care “My view is that later life is a time to broaden your horizons, not limit them. This has been the case for many of the clients that live in the 25 luxury apartments at our Headingley Hall location. Evidence shows that taking advantage of the wellbeing, social, leisure and community facilities on offer means they are staying active in body and mind for longer.” The show home for Westward Care’s 23 luxury new independent living apartments at Southlands on Wetherby Road opens in early November and five more apartments are being built at Headingley Hall (available Spring 2015). Traditionally, Christmas is the time of year when thousands of families incorporate a trip to the theatre into their seasonal celebrations. This year in Leeds you have great choices – there’s plenty of ‘He’s behind you!’ at City Varieties and The Carriageworks, and West Yorkshire Playhouse presents Christmas shows that will enchant audiences of all ages.

IT’S PANTO ROCK ‘N’ ROLL AT CITY VARIETIES Following hot on the heels of the successes of Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Aladdin, the Rock ’n’ Roll Panto returns to City Varieties in December with Peter Rowe’s Dick Whittington. You can expect all the traditional elements of a family pantomime, with lots of audience interaction and heaps of corny gags – all soundtracked by classic pop and soul hits from the 60s, 70s and beyond. We have always been amazed at the talented cast of actor-musicians, who leap seamlessly from their character roles to become part of the band, performing all vocals and playing an array of instruments live on stage. And, let’s not forget the legendary ‘Rock Fight’ at the end of the show (now with added boulders!) that thrills Leeds audiences every year.

SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS AT THE CARRIAGEWORKS The Carriageworks’ production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs promises all the essential ingredients of a great pantomime. Headlining the cast are Jez Edwards and Jonathan Ansell. Christmas at the Carriageworks just wouldn’t be Christmas without Jez! This year he’s back to create more comedy clowning and chaos as Muddles. Jonathan Ansell shot to fame in pop-opera band G4 in the first series of The X Factor and since then has rarely been out of the spotlight. He will play the perfect panto prince in this new production of Snow White, which will incorporate great special effects and, of course, seven dwarfs full of mischief and merriment! Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs runs from 5th December until 10th January. Tickets are available from 0113 224 3801 and www. carriageworkstheatre.org.uk

If you missed The National Theatre’s award-winning comedy ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ last year, here’s your chance to catch it, or catch it again, as it returns to Leeds Grand Theatre from 4th – 8th November. It has just celebrated being the longest running show in the Theatre Royal Haymarket’s 192-year history! een by over a million people worldwide, this internationally-acclaimed smashhit is on its longest ever UK & Ireland Tour. Nicholas Hytner’s (Director of The National Theatre) production tells the hilarious story of Francis Henshall who, fired from his skiffle band, becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother – who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers – but to prevent discovery, he must keep his two guvnors apart. Keep up! Gavin Spokes takes the central role of loveable chancer, Francis Henshall and Norman Pace plays Charlie Clench. They are ably supported by, Emma Barton (Dolly), Jasmyn Banks (Pauline Clench), Alicia Davies (Rachel Crabbe), Michael Dylan (Alfie), Derek Elroy (Lloyd Boateng), Edward Hancock (Alan Dangle) and Patrick Warner (Stanley Stubbers). We caught up with Norman Pace in Leicester, after just his fourth appearance as Charlie Clench. He is thrilled to be part of it. “It’s one of the highlights of my career”, he told us. “I first saw it in the West End Years ago and immediately asked my agent to let them know that I wanted to do it!

Any part! It is one of the funniest plays and the most fun you can have in the theatre. It appeals across age groups and every demographic, and uses every comedy device. It is genuine comedy satisfaction!” After their 30-year comedy partnership, both Norman and Gareth (Hale & Pace) have been enjoying successful acting careers and, still the best of friends (“more like brothers”), work together from time to time. They did their Farewell Tour of Australia just last year, having completed 11 tours

there, and have acted in two plays together. The only time a little jealousy crept in was when Gareth got the role of Arthur Doolittle in Pygmalion – Norman has coveted that role for years! “Being part of this National Theatre production is very special to me”, said Norman. “In a way it gives legitimacy to the last 30 years. I’m very proud to represent the National and take this great play around the country. I’m looking forward to Leeds and a packed theatre!”

Woodbine Willie Returns to Leeds Minster ‘Woodbine Willie’ returns to Leeds Minster on Tuesday 4th November in a theatrical performance by Searchlight Theatre Company. The production honours Leeds born poet and priest, Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, affectionately known as Woodbine Willie, and marks the centenary of the First World War.

eeds-born ‘psychic’ hypnotherapist Dr Alexander Cannnon was a shadowy, behind-the-scenes figure during the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII, and at key moments during the Second World War. A new book, The King’s Psychic, by BBC Yorkshire producer Sean Stowell, opens up secret files and hidden archives, which took him years to track down. History might not have judged Churchill or Edward VIII in quite the same way had they been outed What is as having consulted a psychic guru who claimed to be able to harness amazing what the paranormal had to offer. is how Linking Dr Alexander Cannon with Edward VIII and Churchill has taken seriously years of research. He had already studied hypnotherapy in Vienna, and and latched onto the 1920s and 30s obsession with using the paranormal ‘treated’ to contact the dead. According to his rambling books and recordings, the paranormal was a friend and

servant only if you were a believer who embraced the ‘science’. His claims were ridiculous both then and now. What is amazing is how seriously he was taken, and who he advised and ‘treated’. As with other psychics, the thread linking the most fascinating episodes in Cannon’s life, is the desperation others. - Edward VIII thought a bit of psychic assistance might sort out his predicament. At the start of World War II, members of the military top brass, including those close to Churchill, were even more desperate - a successful German invasion seemed only a matter of time away. Why not look at what the paranormal could offer? Cue Dr Alexander Cannon, the ‘Yorkshire Yogi’, resplendent in his spats and bat wing collared cloak, and his psychic sister assistants, Dames Rhonda de Rhonda and Joyce de Rhonda. The King’s Psychic is available on Amazon and from Waterstones.

An Anglican priest, he volunteered as chaplain on the Western Front during the First World War. He won the Military Cross for his reckless courage, running into No Man’s Land to help the wounded. This production is based on original interviews with those who knew and loved him. A deep and real concern for his fellow man drove him relentlessly, and he played a vital role on battlefields, in the trenches and then the slums, sharing the love of God, and Woodbine cigarettes at a time when men needed both desperately. The show is the ideal addition to this year’s centenary celebrations, using drama, war poems and music to bring an incredible life to the stage as well as highlighting the horrors of the trenches. ‘Woodbine Willie’ is at Leeds Minster at 7.45pm on Tuesday 4th November. David Greed, long-serving leader of the Orchestra of Opera North, vividly remembers the day in 1989 when

Leeds Symphony Orchestra at St Chad’s

he expected to play Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in Grassington with the Sinfonia of Leeds. “It was exciting, and I was looking forward to it. What I didn’t see coming was being asked at very short notice to conduct and direct the entire concert, and become the orchestra’s Music Director!” wenty-five years on, David still leads this remarkable group, having overseen its transformation from a small chamber ensemble to a full-size symphony orchestra. A life spent in the orchestra pit has proved invaluable, allowing him to observe different conductors’ strengths and weaknesses. “With a non-professional orchestra you have to be very clear in everything you do”, said David. “It’s vital to remember that, when a rehearsal starts at 7.30pm on a Monday evening, most of your players have already spent a day at work. It takes patience – especially in the first stage of a rehearsal – but the orchestra’s achievements are an inspiration.” Juggling the Sinfonia with a full-time career doesn’t make for an easy life, so Greed now shares the season with his Opera North colleague Anthony Kraus. The two will collaborate on the Sinfonia’s concert on 8th November at Leeds University’s Great Hall – Kraus accompanying Greed as soloist in Shostakovich’s epic Violin Concerto No 1. The Sinfonia’s repertoire has become far more ambitious – recent programmes have included weighty symphonies by Mahler, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov. Thanks to a generous donation from the Liz and Terry Bramall Trust, and renewed support from the Sinfonia patrons, the orchestra can continue to push the boundaries. David is looking forward to directing his all-time favourite piece, Ravel’s ballet Daphnis and Chloe, on 17th January 2015 at St Edmund’s Church, Roundhay. On Saturday 8th November, Martin Binks conducts the Leeds Symphony Orchestra in an exciting programme of music by Berlioz, Brahms and Rachmaninov at St Chad’s Church, Far Headingley. The orchestra welcomes back two outstanding soloists, Sophie Rosa (violin), and Mikhail Nemtsov (cello), both graduates of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Sophie and Mikhail are to play the great Brahms double concerto. The programme also features Berlioz’ colourful Scottish overture ‘Waverley’, and Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony, regularly voted in the top ten most popular symphonies by Classic FM listeners. Tickets are available from the Leeds Box Office at The Carriageworks, Millennium Square (0113 224 3801), or on the door. For further information, please visit www.lso.org.uk

Musicians Gather at St Matthew’s to Commemorate WWI To mark the centenary of the start of WWI, St. Matthew’s Parish Church in Chapel Allerton is commemorating the occasion on Remembrance Sunday with a service of readings and music involving musicians from across the region and culminating in a performance of Mozart’s Requiem. ingers are invited to join St Matthew’s Choir and the West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra in a weekend of rehearsals from Friday 7th November (7.30pm). The commemoration will take place on Remembrance Sunday 9th November at 7pm. Mozart’s Requiem is one of the most haunting pieces of classical music ever written. The work was commissioned by Count Franz von Walsegg in 1791, who was most likely planning to pass

the work off as his own. It was unfinished at the time of Mozart’s death on 5th December 1791 and was completed a year later by Franz Xaver Süssmayr, one of Mozart’s pupils. St. Matthew’s has an established choir and a strong musical tradition. The conductor and Director of Music is Aljoša (Josh) Škorja, a graduate of the School of Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music. Josh also studied musicology and church music (majoring in choral conducting) at the University of Ljubljana. He has conducted various amateur and professional orchestras, including the Manchester Camerata and London Sinfonietta. www.stmatthewschapelallerton.org.uk/music. html

A Little London History

Little London in inner city Leeds is one of the most diverse communities in the city. Largely comprising local authority housing built in the 1950s – 1960s, it is home to people of wide-ranging social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The publication of ‘A Little Bit of History’, funded by the Heritage Lottery, is the culmination of a project undertaken by Little London Arts from 2010 to 2014. Its aims were to discover and share aspects of the history of the area through the experience of residents and former residents. The project was carried out through local research, interviews, drop-in sessions and various events. Words are combined with images of life in Little London from individuals’ family photo albums. The project was carried out by community based organisation LLA - Little London Arts. Before even a note of melody has been heard, the mood is set and the audience prepared. It is perfectly magical. And the idea of closing the first movement quietly leaves the listener anticipating how this storyline might unfold and be resolved.” The programme, conducted by

his is the first ever major non-replica production of the show and is quite a coup for The Playhouse. There will be a brand new, freshly orchestrated, jazz infused score by Tony Award-nominated composer Jason Carr (who also worked on A Christmas Carol), and fabulous new choreography by Nick Winston who has choreographed numerous successful shows (including Annie at The Playhouse). Nikolai Foster returns to The Playhouse to direct this original staging of Irving Berlin’s musical, bringing together an ensemble of 17 led by Darren Day and Oliver Tompsett as entertainers Bob Wallace and Phil Davis (played by Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye in the film). Helen Anker and Holly Dale Spencer play the sparky Haynes sisters. “I’m really excited by this new vision”, said Nikolai. “The costumes, the choreography, the arrangements are all brand new with an exciting jazz feel. moving story. America is emerging from conflict and trying to find itself, trying to provide life with focus, purpose and a sense of identity. People are returning from war and trying to reintegrate into society.” Bing Crosby’s recording of ‘White Christmas’ was the best selling single of all time and you could be tempted to label it as saccharine, nostalgic, and over emotional, but when you think about when it was written and how people yearned for home and family, you can be excused a bit of nostalgia. And, if you can’t be nostalgic at Christmas, when can you! The show is full of vitality, unashamedly old fashioned and romantic, but it highlights the importance of sharing time with friends and family, caring about and helping people, and having a great time while you do it. The perfect Christmas show!

You’re no doubt aware of Sunshine Bakery, the quaint Chapel Allerton establishment presided over by top chef David Bennett, creator of cupcake masterpieces and confectioner extraordinaire. But, are you as clued up about Sunshine’s savory offerings and its weekly transformation into a restaurant in miniature? Relaxed, cosy and low key, the space offers pleasing respite from the often frantic hustle and bustle that accompanies weekend dining out and the lack of distractions allows one to really focus on the food which is uniformly outstanding. News From Your Councillors CLLR DANIEL COHEN

Alwoodley Ward Many thanks to all those Alwoodley residents who came to me with grit bin requests – we are working through the list and trying to meet as many of the requests as we possibly can. At the beginning of the October I attended the monthly PACT (Police and Communities

Roundhay Ward A Great Teacher I recently attended the Town Hall Memorial Service for the late Corpus Christie teacher, Ann Maguire. I never met Ann, but everyone was determined that she should have a fitting memorial from the City where she had taught for 40 years. But much more than that came through. There was testimony from past and present head teachers, teachers, and pupils to the influence that she’d had on the 40 cohorts of children that had entered the school over those years, measured by many thousands of alumni. There was the sense that they had lost someone who believed in people when they did not believe in themselves. She was the person who always had time for pupils, who was always last to leave school, and who forced herself to

Together meeting) at Treetops Community Centre, Shadwell Lane. These meetings are usually chaired by our Alwoodley beat manager, PC Christian Fletcher, who genuinely goes by the nickname Fletch. At the meeting he introduced a new way of communicating with members of the local neighbourhood policing team. Every Wednesday members of the team will be available from 5 - 6pm at the entrance to Sainsburys, Moor Allerton. While this is clearly not the venue for raising confidential matters, it is a perfect opportunity to get some quick advice, raise a local concern, or just get to know our local Alwoodley team. On the subject of the Moor Allerton Centre, it is worth highlighting that the library is the location for our councillors’ surgeries on the first and last Thursdays of each month. Finally, and on a totally

different note, the state of the nation’s roads has recently been in the news. It is no secret that Neil, Peter and I believe that a radical programme of road resurfacing is very much needed in Alwoodley. Each year we press highways to ensure that the worse roads do get resurfaced, our view is that this is the tip of the iceberg. If there are potholes in your street that need attention, please do let me know so we can get them fixed. This is all the more important, before the weather takes a real winter downturn and the roads become more hazardous.

do things that she found difficult - like skiing ever more complex slopes, simply so that she could teach her charges to do the same. The gifted Spanish and guitar teacher was also a devoted family woman who enjoyed chaotic caravan holidays. We rightly spend much time finding ways of improving education, and providing the organisation and structures that will provide sound support for children. But above all education relies on the talent and inspiration of teachers. All of us remember the teachers who stood out from the crowd, but no one twenty years on will be praising the organisational arrangements that their school introduced. Ann Maguire stood out for the very best reasons for a great many people.

The awards were hosted by No Offence, a Community Interest Company that works to promote a more positive image of offenders and ex-offenders, and are the most inclusive awards for justice ever presented, with nominations from across the country. When the winners were announced they were ‘shell-shocked – like a rabbit in the headlights’. “They didn’t look like they thought they had won!” said Sue Clifford, CEO of No Offence. “There are no other awards that do this – we are trying to show that people can and do change. It’s great to be able to reward

and raise the profile of those who make this change possible.” There were nine awards in total, recognizing the achievements of people who change themselves and support others to change, and those who help to make change possible. David Pilling, Head Chef for Nurture said: “It feels great that the work we do with our clients, and especially the work they do here, has been highlighted nationally and we’re over the moon to have won such an auspicious award.” “Nurture is an intrinsic part of the work we do here at St George’s Crypt and they are thrilled to have won this award “, said Chris Wilson, St George’s Crypt Project Manager. “We are very proud of the charity’s work in establishing a robust and inclusive employment strategy - 92% of the Nurture team has been through the criminal justice system.”

Have Your Say on Allerton Grange Fields Friends of Allerton Grange Fields are launching an online

Park User Survey and inviting local residents to have their say on how to improve Allerton Grange Fields. hey are working with the Council’s Parks & Countryside Service through a Partnership Agreement to protect, maintain and enhance the 2.5 hectare space off Talbot Avenue as a public green space for present and future generations.

In the last year, the Friends, in partnership with Roundhay Environmental Action Project (REAP), have planted a community orchard, edible flowerbed and three yellow flowerbeds along the cycle path, dedicated to the Tour de France Grand Depart. The fields have been used by local sports clubs and associations – including The Roundhegians Rugby Football Club, St Edmund’s Scout Group, the Council’s Multi Sports Coaching Camp, and a five-aside football tournament on Brackenwood Community Fun Day. The Friends also oversaw a major makeover project to paint the boundary fence on Lidgett Lane and Talbot Avenue (funded by ASDA and Leeds City Council Housing Advisory Panel, as part of the Voluntary Action Leeds ‘Business Doing Good in Leeds’ initiative). Roundhay and Moortown councillors have supported the work of the Friends by funding two new entrance signs, creating a welcoming gateway to the Fields and providing information on

local wildlife and history. The survey will gather information about how people use the fields and what improvements, events and activities they would like to see. The feedback will inform the Greenspace Management Plan for the Fields and help to prioritise future environmental improvement activities. Happy 25th Anniversary to Roundhay WI lmost 25 years to the day, president Pauline Buckley and ex-president Joan Bowers cut the cake to start the ball rolling for the silver anniversary of Roundhay WI on 9th October. The theme of the evening was ‘Inspiring Women’, reflecting the choice of the National WI which celebrates its centenary in 2015. A lively evening of poetry, paté and prose followed a heartfelt rendition of ‘Happy Birthday to us’. A quiz on inspiring women, raffle, and game of stand up sit down bingo all added to the fun. A highlight was a quintet singing about their favourite things, but with a marked, age related difference!

From the start Roundhay WI proved to be successful and lively, attracting nearly 40 members at the first official meeting, all of whom paid the princely sum of £7.50 to join. Many of the talks and activities which took place in those early years are still replicated in some way today. Twenty five years ago there were ‘knit ins’, whist drives, games evenings and talks on such things as first aid, clocks and watches, local government and wine tasting. Today there are interest groups such as strolling, ‘meat and eat ‘, discussion and crafts. Talks in the coming months will include photography, blue plaques, the fun side of banking and hand bells. The anniversary evening was thoroughly enjoyed by both members and visitors and proved to be a fitting celebration of 25 successful years. Long may Roundhay WI continue!

CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence

If you struggle to get yourself out of bed in the morning, or just can’t fasten your shoelaces as easily as you used to, it doesn’t mean you need some form of residential care – perhaps all you need is a helping hand in your own home. Sometimes a little bit of help can dramatically improve your quality of life and enable you to maintain your independence and continue to enjoy living in the comfort of your own home. Bluebird Care is available to any adult who needs specific help with everyday tasks around the home. These may include help getting in and out of bed or getting dressed, preparing meals, shopping, washing and ironing, personal hygiene, cleaning, helping with mobility issues and accompanying to appointments or to see friends or relatives. Bluebird Care normally involves one or more visits a day for relatively short periods, possibly up to an hour, to help with everyday tasks. Longer visits are also available, including overnight help or even live-in care. “People are looking for the best quality care for themselves or their loved ones but they need to know they are getting value for money”, said David Brown, Director of Bluebird Care in North Leeds. “At Bluebird Care we provide what people want and carefully measure the way we deliver care. We train, monitor and supervise our staff closely and effectively, and ensure that all staff members have the right temperament and attitude. We will only deliver care at the level we would expect for our own relatives. That way we know we have got it right!” Quality Care should be all about maintaining people’s independence and confidence, not taking it away. “Everyone is unique, and our care packages are tailored to suit each person’s specific requirements, promoting independence and ensuring dignity and respect for the individual”, said David. Bluebird Care’s helping hand enables people to continue to appreciate life, without having to struggle with those little things.

ork Gate Garden in Adel was recently awarded three Yorkshire in Bloom Awards. The garden, which is owned and run by horticulture charity Perennial, received a Gold Award in the ‘Public, Private and Charitable Establishments’ category. It was also presented with the Yorkshire Rose Community Award for small groups, recognising the work of the volunteers at York Gate. The garden was praised not only for the exceptional standards of the garden but also the knowledge and talent of its staff and volunteers. Just one acre in size, York Gate is the flagship garden of Perennial. The judges were impressed with its imaginative style, and the wide range of plants and features packed into the space. They also commended the way the garden is being maintained

in the manner of the Arts and Crafts movement in the spirit of the Spencer family’s original design, while investing in exciting plans to develop the site in the future. “I am so proud of our achievements and of the

efforts of our garden volunteers who spent hours preparing the garden for judging, and of our front of house volunteers for their help in making York Gate such a special place to visit”, said Martin Walker, Head Gardener. “York Gate has a very small staff so we are totally reliant on the hard work of our wonderful volunteers to keep the garden going.” Perennial is reliant on donations from the garden-loving public and the horticulture industry and the upkeep of York Gate depends on these contributions. You can join the Friends of York Gate scheme for an annual membership of £19.50 or make a one-off donation at www. perennial.org.uk. Growth in the garden has slowed right down and leaves are falling as the days become shorter. Leaves, leaves, and more leaves! There is no need to rush out and tidy up every fallen leaf but it’s wise not to let them sit on the lawn for too long, or to allow deep drifts of leaves to swamp the plants in your borders. A thin layer can be left for worms to pull into their burrows and it can act as an insulating mulch. Collected leaves rot down more slowly than the rest of the compost so it is a good idea to keep them separate. I usually scoop mine into black bin bags and leave them in a corner of the garden to decompose. The process needs air, so a few holes made with a garden fork

will help. In a year or so when it is crumbly and dark, the leaf mould will be a great soil conditioner or mulch and can be dug into the soil or left on the surface. It does not have the high nutrient content of things like manure or compost so it’s not good for feeding hungry plants.

this makes them cheaper, lighter and much easier to plant. So, November is the ideal time to do some planning and re-design your garden. You can move small shrubs and trees to where you want them, and bring in new ones. Planting design starts by choosing the trees and shrubs that will give the garden its structure and then filling the spaces around them with other plants. Remember to leave enough space around each plant for it to grow to its mature size. Look out for some of my favourite small trees: Sorbus ‘Jospeh Rock’ has fiery autumn foliage and long lasting yellow berries, whilst Cercidiphyllum japonicum has interesting leaf colour through the seasons and an amazing candy floss scent in Autumn.

It’s film festival time and once again LIFF has unveiled a fantastic programme. The 28th Leeds International Film Festival runs from 5th to 20th November and features the best new and classic cinema from around the world, including comedy, drama, thrillers, animation, documentaries, music film, short film and horror, sci-fi and cult screenings. There are over 250 screenings at venues across the city including Leeds Town Hall, Hyde Park Picture House, Everyman Leeds, City Varieties, Cottage Road Cinema, Vue and more. mong the highlights is the critically acclaimed black comedy ‘Birdman’ or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), one of the most anticipated films of the year. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams), it stars Michael Keaton who, famous for portraying an iconic superhero, struggles to mount a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory. special guests. Singer-songwriter and former frontman of Orange Juice, Edwyn Collins, will appear for a Q&A and performance at Hyde Park Picture House to accompany a screening of ‘The Possibilities are Endless’, about his gradual recovery from a cerebral haemorrhage. Another not to miss is Michelle Heighway’s ‘Mr. Somebody?’ about Huddersfield’s greatest eccentric, Jake Mangle Wurzel. This is a truly compelling portrait of an unforgettably oddball lifestyle.

Michell and Jake will be at The Town Hall on 12th November at 9pm for a Q&A. DJ Gilles Peterson will appear for a Q&A with his film ‘Brasil Bam Bam Bam: The Story of Sonzeira’, about his passionate project to create the Brazilian super-group Sonzeri. The UK Premiere of ‘Heaven Adores You’ examines the life of much-missed US indie musician Elliott Smith. We absolutely can’t wait for ‘Once in a Lifetime’, a music film event where the Town Hall will be transformed with festivalstyle deck chairs to create an atmosphere celebrating concert films. The line-up includes the UK Premiere of a new digital print of Talking Heads’ ‘Stop Making Sense’, and The Who’s ‘The Kids Are Alright’, ‘1991: The Year Punk Broke’ (starring Nirvana and Sonic Youth), and the Beastie Boys’ ‘Awesome; I __ Shot That!’ There will be street food available and drinks by Northern Monk Brewery. Dedicated to horror, sci-fi and cult screenings, Fanomenon’s globally renowned Day of the Dead 8 is headlined by a special

preview of ‘Tusk’, the new horrorcomedy by director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats), while ‘ABCs of Death 2’ leads its legendary allnight horror marathon Night of the Dead XIV. Anime fans will be treated to ‘The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness’, an unprecedented behind-the-scenes documentary about Studio Ghibli. Horror fans will also get to see the UK Premiere of ‘Patch Town’, ‘A Masque of Madness’, ‘Asmodexia’, and the English Premiere of ‘Witching and Bitching’. The Masters of Film Comedy selection plays out over one day, with Bill Murray’s ‘Groundhog Day’ at Leeds Town Hall and Buster Keaton masterpiece ‘The General’, with live musical accompaniment, at City Varieties. To talk about this film is to attempt to navigate one’s way through a minefield of spoilers. If you’ve not yet seen it and managed to go this long without having had it ruined for you, then firstly congratulations and secondly, why haven’t you seen it yet? Adapted from Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel (she also penned the screenplay) Gone Girl is a film that ties its audience in knots that tighten exponentially throughout its running time. Ostensibly presented as a murder mystery, as the layers are peeled back it’s revealed that the troubling themes examined here run deeper than flesh and blood; it’s emotional violence that lies at its dark heart. Nick and Amy Dunne are a married couple. In flashback we see them meet and fall in love, brief glimpses of the halcyon days of their (nauseatingly smug) early courtship and, after their move from New York to Nick’s small Missouri hometown, the inevitable trouble-in-paradise cracks beginning to show. On the morning of their fifth anniversary Amy disappears and Nick is suspected of her murder. Immediately finding himself under scrutiny by the law and at the centre of a media circus, Nick doesn’t exactly appear innocent or, at least, is certainly not as distraught as he should be. In

NOVEMBER2014 Area B.indd 60

fact, the presumption of guilt is such that this is less a whodunit and more a how-dunit, his flimsy defence unravelling from the word go and only his twin sister taking him at his word. And that’s pretty much the extent of the plot outline I’m at liberty to offer here. I’ll only say further (and I hope this isn’t a spoiler) that there’s a WTF

framework of a crime thriller we’re given a cruel dissection ofmarriage

moment around the midpoint that will leave you reeling. In bringing this novel to the screen David Fincher is undoubtedly the man for the job. One of the few directors I know who can make sunlight look dark and foreboding, Fincher conducts this psychodrama with the cold,

clinical precision we’ve come to expect. Within the framework of a crime thriller we’re given a cruel dissection of relationships, marriage in particular, the roles people are expected to play and what’s going on beneath the surface. How much do we really know about the people we share our lives with and how deep and wide is the gulf between public presentation and perception and private deceit, discord and malice? “What are you thinking? What are you feeling?” asks Nick in voiceover, “What have we done to each other? What will we do?” Ben Affleck (often unfairly underestimated) and Rosamund Pike both put in sterling work as Nick and Amy, managing to make their unsympathetic characters nonetheless compelling, and a

NOVEMBER2014 Area B.indd 61

great supporting cast is headed up by Kim Dickens (of TV’s Deadwood and Treme) and Tyler Perry successfully playing against type. Unrelentingly gripping to the last, Gone Girl is masterfully done and Fincher is once again abetted in his dark arts by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross who provide a chilling and menacingly pulsating score. Not least due to the uncomfortable questions it raises, the film resonates for some time after viewing and I’d unreservedly recommend it. A word of warning, however, to married couples who choose to catch a screening on date night; your spouse will likely be eyeing you with wary suspicion afterwards.

We recently went along to the echoey hall of Leeds Futsal Arena to see Leeds Roller Dolls and seven other teams from around the region do battle in the Great Yorkshire Showdown. stablished in 2007, Leeds Roller Dolls (LRD) were Yorkshire’s first roller derby team and, since gaining membership of the Women’s Flat track Derby Association (WFTDA), they are now skating into the international competitive arena. Although the sport has been gaining recognition and popularity in the last decade or so, its roots can be traced back to the depression era of the 1930s. In those days it was primarily an endurance event with skaters just whizzing around until they dropped. By the 70s things had developed somewhat but it was still less sport and more spectacle, not unlike wrestling with bouts being largely staged. Over time things grew more competitive and those participating in roller derby became determined to re-imagine it as an organised, modern sport leading to the formation of the WFTDA in 2006. Today roller derby is a pretty big deal with over 100 teams in the UK. It’s fast, furious, and wildly exciting. The evolution of the sport to this point has been a distinctly femaleled endeavour, with more and more people attracted to this intensely physical, empowering pursuit for badass women. Previously, the attention the sport received tended to focus on its stylistic trappings; think hot-pants, fishnets and tattoos (a glammed-up, Hollywood version of which was portrayed in Drew Barrymore’s fun 2009 movie, Whip It) but recently those involved have been determined to show that roller derby is about much more than its punk aesthetic and is an inclusive, accessible spectator sport. Roller derby does retain similarities with the punk scene, however (or more accurately, the Riot Grrrl movement) with its fiercely DIY ethos and the fact that it is a sport spearheaded by women who make the rules and call the

NOVEMBER2014 Area B.indd 68

shots. As the sport has its origins in the US (due to an abundance of roller rinks in pretty much every town) the structure of gameplay is not unlike American football. However, despite the frequent stoppages and the numerous rules and regulations, roller derby is easy to get on board with and it takes no time at all to pick up on the gist of the action. It is a fast-paced, full contact, all-female sport played on quad roller skates. In a bout each team fields a point scoring skater (called a ‘jammer’) whose object is to lap as many opposing skaters as they can. The remaining skaters work to both block the opposing jammer, and clear a path for their own jammer to help them score points. Over 90 women and girls currently skate in the Leeds Roller Dolls League – at competitive, recreational and junior league levels. The next skater intake is on Sunday 23rd of November, please email recruit@leedsrollerdolls.co.uk for more information, or visit www. leedsrollerdolls.com Make sure you keep an eye on their website and social media for upcoming bouts and get down to support our Roller Dolls!

new £1 million boathouse, situated next to Thwaite Mills in Stourton, recently threw open its doors to rowers from across Leeds. The new facility will be used by both Leeds Rowing Club and Leeds University Boat Club. It includes a boat store for up to 50 boats, changing facilities, a meeting/training room and car parking. The boathouse has been built as the result of a partnership between the University of Leeds, Leeds Rowing Club, British Rowing and Leeds University Union and has been funded by the University, British Rowing, Sport England and WREN, which awards grants for community projects.

“The new boathouse is a fantastic addition to the University’s sporting facilities”, said Rob Wadsworth, Head of Sport and Physical Activity at the University of Leeds. “It is also a great example of local and national organisations coming together to see an important project realised.” David Cottrell, vice chair of Leeds Rowing Club commented: “In practical terms, the new boathouse will mean we are able to increase our membership threefold and bring the sport to many more people of all ages and abilities. It’s fantastic to think that it could help to produce the next generation of stars from the Yorkshire region for Team GB.” Annamarie Phelps, Chairman of British Rowing, said: “This development will enable many

new people to access rowing: students, young people and the local community - from those who merely wish to enjoy access to the waterway, right through to those with aspirations to represent their country at the highest level. I am delighted we have been able to support this project.”

he scholarships provide students of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects with a £600 financial award to enhance their A-level studies, and fund activities to enrich their understanding and experience of engineering. Applicants had to complete a rigorous selection process consisting of a detailed application form, a two-hour aptitude exam and an interview at Sheffield University, a top engineering university. Each Arkwright scholar is matched with an industry sponsor and a mentor, who provides help and guidance to the students. Two of them, John Greathead (sponsored by Controls & Data Services- part of Rolls-Royce Group) and Andrew Huff (sponsored by The Reece Foundation), are considering

Cathy Wicks, from Alwoodley, whose sponsor is the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Newcastle University, said: “Being an Arkwright scholar will help me stand out from the crowd when I apply to university, and the scholarship will help me to pay for text books, materials and course fees during sixth form.” Dr Martin Thomas, chief executive of the Arkwright Scholarships Trust, said: “With competition for rewarding jobs becoming ever fiercer, an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship can really help dynamic young people at the start of their journey to be the country’s future leaders in engineering and technical design.”

It’s the best way to get to know the sanctuary’s animals A Hope Pastures Experience is the best way to get to know the sanctuary’s animals. It can be for one or two people (or children) and includes a personal tour of the sanctuary (including ‘behind the scenes’), plus time grooming/looking after one of the horses/ponies/donkeys. It lasts for about an hour, but you can also organise longer visits if you wish. The cost for the hour is £30 (£15 per person).

and collect his Bronze medal. Following this, Jake attended the Child of the Year Awards 2014 in Scunthorpe, where he had been shortlisted for his achievements in becoming the ‘Youngest Black Belt in the World’, overcoming so many illnesses and being an inspiration to other children. Here he won the Child of the Year 2014 Steve Prescott Sports Award and was thrilled to receive his award from actor Scott Maslen (Eastenders. The Bill). Peter Andre, who also attended the awards, got Jake up on stage at the end of the event to dance to Mysterious Girl.

Local theatre company, Mimika, is presenting a new performance, Small Worlds, at Headingley HEART on Saturday 1st November at 10 and 11.30am, and 1 and 2.30pm. ased on the border between Meanwood and Headingley, Mimika is internationally re-nowned and ‘Small Worlds’ actually had its world premiere in Singapore and its European premier in Madrid. Mimika’s performances are presented in a large white tent where children and adults alike experience an intimate, atmospheric and spellbinding

show full of magical and poetic imagery. Using immersive soundtracks, puppetry, digital animation and miniature land-scapes, doors are opened to reveal moving images, a wooden set transforms into a river bank, a tiny fox plays in a pop-up meadow and a cat and a girl dream their stories. All without a word being spoken. There are four performances on 1st November. Tickets (£6 adults/ £4 children under 18) are available from HEART, Bennett Road, Headingley, on 0113 275 4548, www.heartcentre.org.uk. Places are limited, so book soon!

Harry Checks Out World Chess Competition in South Africa arry Li, a student from Horsforth in the lower sixth at The Grammar School at Leeds, recently returned from the World Youth Chess Championships in Durban, South Africa, having represented England. A member of both the school chess club and Alwoodley Chess Club, Harry played his first competition aged just five, when he stepped up to win the under seven age group. His performance in high level competitions, such as the Leeds and Yorkshire Chess Leagues, caught the eye of the England selectors. The World Youth Chess

Championships is held in a different country every year. Ninety countries were represented and Harry competed in the U-16 age group. “The competition was very intense, with 11 rounds, each involving a match of at least four hours”, said Harry. “Although England isn’t known as one of the top countries, we all put up a strong fight and caused a lot of upsets.” Players have to meet most of the costs of the trip themselves. Harry’s attendance was made possible thanks to contributions from the DLA Piper Charitable Fund, TD Wealth, his school and individual supporters. “I would like to thank all those who sponsored me”, he said. “Without their support I wouldn’t have benefited from this experience. I’ve learned a lot, both from playing and observing other matches. I intend to continue training hard and hope to be back for next year’s competition.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Paul Mullen feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Paul is

finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
