Make Christmas a Grand Experience!

We like to champion the independent shops around Leeds. Have you explored The Grand recently? You may be surprised!

28 Save Red Ladder Campaign Goes into Overdrive Save Red Ladder joins the Localgiving.com ‘Grow Your Tenner’ campaign.

Dear Readers,

Just as we were starting to enjoy Summer it’s gone and we’ve been thrown back into work and the countdown to Christmas!

Always supporters of independent shops, this month we are urging you to step away from online shopping and investigate some of the interesting shops you’ll find in the smaller arcades around the city – we give you a quick tour of The Grand Arcade. We also bring you up to date on the ‘Save Red Ladder’ campaign; introduce the city’s newest television station, Made in Leeds, which launches this month; and catch up with Leeds Bread Coop, who have now been trading for over a year.

0 8 2 6 4 8

Two art exhibitions that are a must this month are the St Gemma’s annual Leeds Art Exhibition at The Grammar School at Leeds, and David Lyon at The Atrium in the Bexley Wing at St. James’s University Hospital. And, there are loads more interesting little tidbits of local news and events. And so we face November! Get all your news to us as soon as you can – the deadline for news etc. is 1st October (7th October for advertising). For December, those dates are 1st and 7th November respectively.

We look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Carole, Jack and the team.

06 Made in Leeds is on the Way The city’s newest television station prepares to launch. A place where new talent finds opportunities, local businesses find customers, and ordinary people’s stories find an audience.

OWEN BROOKS (1863-1947) PIONEER PHOTOGRAPHER AND MOTORCYCLIST FOUNDER OF COTTAGE ROAD CINEMA

There’s a wonderfully flamboyant photograph of Owen Brooks in 1906, with handlebar moustache and tight-fitting leather flying helmet, posing proudly by his motorcycle, the first to be registered in Leeds. He looks every inch a bold pioneer, and so he was. From humble beginnings as a grocery assistant he launched out into the new field of studio photography, developed his own cine-camera and worked on improved projection equipment, built himself a prototype motor-cycle, and in 1912 founded a new venture, an ‘electric picture palace’, in the expanding suburb of Headingley. His Cottage Road cinema survives today, the oldest continually operating cinema in Leeds. illiam (Willie) Owen Brooks

It was with this in mind that The William Merritt Disabled Living Centre invited MoreAbility and AKW (one of their suppliers) to give a presentation to a group of Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants, who regularly assess the needs of individual clients’ and advise on the most suitable equipment available. Tony Passmore, Director, and Dave White, a surveyor specialising in adapting bathrooms, gave a comprehensive presentation of the advantages and pitfalls of various installations – including the dos, don’ts and what to look out for with regards to the installation of wet floor showers and wet rooms. “With 25 years’ experience of fitting bathrooms and adapting the rooms to suit people with limited mobility, we have come across just about every problem imaginable!” said Tony. “What we have definitely learnt is that the bathroom must be designed around the individual’s needs and abilities and not around the fittings and equipment.” The William Merritt Disabled Living Centre, based at St Mary’s Hospital in Armley, has been providing impartial information, and expert advice and assessment on equipment and the practical aspects of

long-term posture problems and result in injuries! And, don’t forget to get properly kitted out! With our weather being so unpredictable getting the right gear will keep you comfortable and safe in the saddle. We always like to champion the wonderful independent shops around Leeds. Last year we highlighted Headingley, Chapel Allerton and Horsforth – and they are certainly worth investigating again. This year we are saying….. ‘Have you explored the small, city centre arcades recently?’ Thornton’s, Queen’s, Central or The Grand Arcade? You may be surprised! The Grand Arcade has exploded into life this year. The demise of Handpicked Hall has been the arcade’s gain, as a number of its independent retailers switched to the arcade, creating a unique, vibrant shopping experience. Today it’s home to original fashion, a vintage tearoom and vegetarian café, Casa Columbiana coffee shop and restaurant (be sure to pop upstairs to The Loft for designer jewellery, crafts and vintage), and some of the most exciting gift, craft and decorative shops in Leeds.

ur Handmade Collective has been described as an ‘Aladdin’s Cave of handmade treasures’ and was recently voted ‘Best Place to shop in Leeds’ in the Leeds Love Affair Awards. It brings together the work of 55 local designers to provide a shopping experience with gifts to suit every occasion – from contemporary to vintage and upcycled wares, jewellery, soft furnishings, cards, confectionery, craft kits and more. There are bespoke options, exclusive ranges and one off designs. And, if you really cannot decide what to buy, they also do a lovely range of gift vouchers! On Thursday 30th October, Our Handmade Collective is holding a Mistletoe Event. Enjoy mulled wine and mince pies as they showcase their Christmas ranges and snap up some unique, handmade offerings to tuck under your tree! www. ourhandmadecollective.co.uk

James has a long association with Huddersfield and the Festival and was one of the first winners of hcmf//’s Young Composer’s Award. Over the years much of his work has been premiered in Huddersfield. His combination of sonic immediacy and multilayered complexity creates some of the richest experiences a listener can have in new music. His music will be showcased in four concerts during the festival, performed by some of Britain’s leading ensembles – London Sinfonietta, BBC Singers, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Arditti Quartet. “We are all very excited to be welcoming James Dillon as Composer in Residence”, said Graham McKenzie, Artistic Director of the festival. “And we’re thrilled to be presenting the world premiere of a major new work by James, commissioned by hcmf// and BBC Radio 3, as well as celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Arditti Quartet.” As a celebration of this anniversary, the Arditti Quartet also presents a concert featuring works written especially for the quartet. Artist Jo Dunn will be displaying her paintings at Seven Arts, Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton LS7, from 1st – 31st October. Jo paints mainly with watercolour, but sometimes in oil or gouache. This Summer she worked in black and white using Chinese ink. These pictures are a bit different to her watercolours and she’s looking forward to seeing what people make of them at this new exhibition. “I paint a lot of landscapes, some are expressionistic and some are almost abstract”, said Jo. “Most of my current work is about where I live in Leeds 8, near to Gledhow Valley Woods. The woods are a great source of inspiration as they change with the seasons.” Jo is represented by Bono Art Gallery in Otley, where a lot of her work is on display. The official opening of her exhibition at Seven is on Wednesday 15th October, 6-8pm - all welcome. http://jodunn.co.uk

In 2009, Laura Bailey was travelling around Australia and sending travel blogs home to friends and family. They were so taken with her antipodean tales that they encouraged her to write a book…. Well, she’s done it! It’s not like she had nothing to write about. She and her sister had nursed both their parents through cancer while still in their teens. They both managed to come through this traumatic time, got to university and carve out careers for themselves. “People told me my story was inspirational and that I should write about what I know”, said Laura. “So I completed a women’s fiction novel, using my experience as the basic premise.” ‘Beneath the Blossom Tree’ is the harrowing tale of Laylla Jonson as she struggles to overcome the death of both her parents. the world, having lost touch with her friends and abandoned by her relatives, she feels she has little to live for, but the memory of her parents drives her on. With nowhere else to turn, Laylla enrolls in university, and soon discovers that every life has a story and she is not as alone as she thought. Enter the very desirable Jacob Bennett! Both wrestling their inner demons, they fight their feelings. Then Jacob realises that Laylla means so much to him that he will do anything in his power to break down her barriers – but this is one battle he may be destined to lose….. It is directed by Alex Chisholm, who has just left West Yorkshire Playhouse where she was Associate Director for New Writing for 12 years. The young design team of

A newly completed version of Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, by German composer and musical academic Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs, will be given its UK premiere by Opera North at Leeds Town Hall on Sunday 26th October at 7.30pm.

Sam Chase (set and costume) and Natalie McLoughlin (lighting) are also from Leeds University, having just graduated in 2014. ‘It is fantastic to be working with such a talented group of young people”, said Alex. “This production really showcases what brilliant young artists we have in Leeds.”

ozart’s Requiem is one of the most famous and widely performed pieces of choral music, but mystery and intrigue surround the composer’s final work. Left incomplete following Mozart’s early death at the age of 35, it was quickly completed by his pupil, Süssmayr, and some parts were performed at Mozart’s own funeral. Dissatisfaction with Süssmayr’s additions led to several other versions, with many composers and academics creating their own interpretation of the missing parts. Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs is a highly respected musicologist and conductor who also supplied a finale to Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony and a finished version of Mozart’s C minor Mass. Cohrs’ new edition of

the Mozart Requiem received its world premiere in Germany in 2013. The full Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North will perform the new Cohrs’ completion. Dutch maestro and music director of the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra, Jac van Steen, conducts, having worked previously with Opera North on Britten’s Peter Grimes in 2013. The concert will include the Prelude to Act I from Wagner’s Lohengrin and Sibelius’ Symphony No.4 in A minor. Soloists are the young Irish soprano Aoife O’Sullivan, mezzo soprano Rosie Aldridge, tenor Rupert Charlesworth and bass-baritone Matthew Brook. Conscientious is a thrilling onewoman show which asks what you would do if pushed to the edge. Author AJ Kirby may be based in Roundhay, but he has recently been celebrating considerable international success. Not only has his new novel ‘Perfect World’ been picked up by the American genre-fiction specialists TWB Press, his most recent novella ‘Nu Gen’ was published by South Africa’s leading independent science-fiction publishers, Fox and Raven. ‘Perfect World’ is a highconcept, science-fiction novel that explores the complex intersection between our real and virtual lives. It is also a rip-roaring adventure story which one reviewer claimed “gallops along with the speed and dizzying swerves of a racehorse on acid”.

The paperback will be published in Autumn 2014 and follows in a long line of well-received genre-fiction offerings from Kirby (including the Amazon best-selling horror tale ‘Bully’, and the Leeds-based noir novel ‘The Magpie Trap’). To mark the release of the book, AJ will be appearing at a number of literary events in the Yorkshire area. It has been a particularly prolific year for Kirby. Not only did ‘Nu Gen’ – an action-packed, politicallycharged text exploring the shades of good and evil, and the dangers of propaganda and imagery – ride high in the Amazon science-fiction charts, his ghost story ‘Cow and Calf’ was serialised on, the Yorkshire-based arts website, The State of the Arts. AJ was voted one of the 20 best Leeds writers under 40 at the Leeds Big Bookend festival last year, and was also shortlisted for The Guardian’s Not the Booker prize.

When Catriona Moore’s father passed away at St James’s Bexley Wing, she and her husband, artist David Lyon, wanted to give something back for the superb treatment he had received there. To date they have raised thousands, including £10,000 on Trek India in 2011, and have travelled half way around the world doing it. or their latest venture, David is exhibiting his newest paintings, ‘Wildflowers’, in the beautiful, light-filled Atrium of the Bexley Wing and giving the commission from all sales to Yorkshire Cancer Centre to help provide specialist medical equipment, research and development and ‘home comforts’ to 2,000 patients each day. David has created a series of bright, intensely colourful images which are both inspirational and uplifting. The exhibition hangs on the 26m x 5m gallery wall in the entrance area and aims to stimulate patients, staff and visitors alike in a life-enhancing celebration of the natural world. The organic shapes and forms of the Wildflower series

are painted with areas of detail contrasting with open areas of pure colour and texture. Sizes vary from larger acrylic on boards 4ft x 3ft (1219mm x 915mm) to smaller acrylic on boards 1.5ft x 2ft (457mm x 610mm). David is inspired by the shapes, symbols and ideas that surround him. These, together with white scarves and black clothes, have become the Chorus uniform for this annual event. Leeds Festival Chorus rehearses on Wednesday from 7pm in St Chad’s Church, Headingley. Visitors and potential new members are always welcome. Details of concerts can be found at www.leedsfestivalchorus. co.uk

The Chorus has carefully explored its extensive repertoire to find pieces to entertain audiences of all ages. Last year conductor Simon Wright adapted ‘Nellie the Elephant’ and Julius Fucik’s famous ‘Entry of the Gladiators’ specially for Light Night. ocal Printmakers Talia Russell and Laura Long have collaborated to organise a new Print Fair at Leeds Corn Exchange on Saturday 1st November. They have gathered together friends and fellow artists to create an exciting event where you’ll find a wide range of fine art printing techniques with a huge variety of themes, together with printed textiles in the form of lampshades, cushions, tea towels and much more. The idea for the Fair came about when Talia and Laura were looking for places to exhibit and sell their work. They decided to setup a Christmas Print Fair to celebrate the wealth of printmaking talent in the region and hope to make it an annual event.

A couple of months ago, Red Ladder Theatre supporters Phill Jupitus and Paul Heaton launched the ‘Save Red Ladder’ #GisATenner campaign, which has raised over £12,000 to date, including £5,000 from Judith Kirton-Darling, MEP for the North East. Now, on 14th October the campaign goes into overdrive as it joins the Localgiving.com six month ‘Grow Your Tenner’ campaign. ocalgiving is dedicated to providing funding opportunities and advocacy for local charities and community groups. Throughout the campaign, they will match donations pound-for-pound up to £10. You can also take advantage of Gift Aid, adding a further 25% to your donation at no cost to you. Earlier this year, Red Ladder lost £160,000 of Arts Council funding in one fell swoop. So a team Red of supporters started a campaign Ladder’s to save the UK’s leading radical down theatre company. The #GisATenner campaign was based on the fact that to earth if each Red Ladder Twitter follower approach gave £10, that would cover the full production budget of one UK tour to the arts (£80,000). is exactly “Red Ladder is that rare thing within UK theatre – a company why it that has successfully continued to should produce theatre that is energetic, entertaining and angry at a time continue when it needs to be angry”, said Phill it’s vital Jupitus, who starred in Red Ladder’s 2012 show, Big Society. “But role more importantly, it consistently produces work that speaks to the

Pictured: Paul Heaton & Phill Jupitus wide majority of people who don’t consider themselves ‘theatre goers’. “Red Ladder’s down to earth approach to the arts is exactly why this small but mighty company should continue it’s vital role in the cultural landscape of Leeds, of Yorkshire, of the United Kingdom and the world! Red Ladder’s work is important. To lose them at a point in British history where the fight against everyday inequality and everyday injustice is being lost all around us would be a genuine tragedy.” Red Ladder champions new writing, particularly that which

challenges or agitates. It is acknowledged as one of Britain’s leading national touring companies producing high quality theatre contributing to social change and global justice. We can look forward to two Red Ladder productions in Leeds in the new year – ‘We’re Not Going Back’ by Boff Whalley at City Varieties (19 – 21 Feb), a hard-hitting musical comedy that follows the fortunes of three sisters in a pit village, determined to set up a branch of ‘Women Against Pit Closures’; and ‘Nicobobinus’ at The Carriageworks (27/28 Feb) - a new family musical based on Monty Python star Terry Jones’ much loved children’s book. It strikes me as somewhat ironically strange that Red’s self-styled ‘Church of True Barbecue’, with the quasi-religious lingo that adorns their menus, decor and branding, should be so enthusiastic in the promotion of one of the seven deadly sins; that of gluttony! ut so it is. In their dedication to authentic stateside c u i s i n e Red’s seem focussed on one particular element of the American culinary experience, n a m e l y pigging out to an almost obscene degree. On the plus side this means that you’ll never leave Red’s hungry, or more accurately, you’ll struggle to leave at all once the meat-heavy stuffing you’ve indulged in has rendered even basic bodily movement arduous.

American style restaurants have enjoyed popularity on these shores for some time, mostly in the guise of crass and cheesy chains such as TGI Friday’s or Frankie & Benny’s. Recently, with the rise of the street food revolution, and following the fetishisation of the ‘gourmet burger’, it seems the demand for US style food has been leaning toward something dirtier, scuzzier, tastier and altogether more hip. In this regard, Red’s, a small

indie chain whose city centre location on Call Lane has been doing a roaring trade for the last year or so, delivers in spades. The disclaimer ‘vegetarians need not apply’ should really have appeared at the top of this article. This place is all about the meat. And then some! If it’s a carnivorous, BBQ sauce drenched chow down you crave then this should be your first port of call. In the true spirit of barbecue dining we thought it would be remiss not to complement our meat odyssey with a goodly amount of booze and so we began with a pair of ‘Picklebacks’ (bourbon shots served with a pickle juice chaser. Sounds gross, actually delicious) and some beer, the Snake Dog IPA proving a

heady and flavoursome brew. For starters we went for the Jumbo BBQ Wings which were enormous, served with a creamy blue cheese dip and really pretty tasty, and the Rib Tips; trimmed ends from their St Louis pork ribs which were smoky and saucy, but perhaps a tad too chewy. On reflection I thought the BBQ Ribs Taster would have been a better choice. For mains we felt obliged to try Red’s signature burger, The Pit Burger. What arrived was a formidable, towering stack of meaty excess. To be fair, all the various elements they crammed between that brioche bun worked well together (sliced brisket, pulled pork, bacon, double beef patty, dirty sauce and BBQ sauce) there was just so damn much of it! We must’ve spent a good

ten minutes considering a tactical approach as to how to tackle the thing and in the end were forced to go at it with knives and forks. The Pit Burger was undoubtedly impressive, almost intimidating and it’s a testament to its tastiness that no trace of it remained, but there’s still something about the employment of utensils with a burger that strikes me as somehow wrong. The other main course, and probably the best thing we had If it’s a that night, was the Beef Long Ribs. We opted for two bones and were carnivorous, again taken aback at the size of BBQ sauce the dish that was delivered to us. Now, I loves me some ribs and drenched this was the first time I’d tried chow down this particular variety. I must say they were superb; the tender meat, you crave sticky with BBQ glaze came away then this from the bone effortlessly and had a delicious smoky flavour of should be surprising depth and richness. As your first for the sides, they’re divided into port of call Humble and Divine so we had one from each; the mayo-free, tangy slaw (humble) and the smoky,

spicy BBQ Pit Beans containing burnt ends (divine) both of which were very good and suitable accompaniment to the mains. In terms of ambience, the place had quite a buzz to it when we visited, the small dining room surprisingly full for mid-week. The service was prompt and efficient and the staff upbeat and accommodating. Also, a very agreeable music policy added to the atmosphere. Any playlist that takes in Bowie, Zeppelin and the

Beastie Boys gets two thumbs skyward from me. Red’s certainly seems to know what it’s about and what it’s there for. The booze-friendly food menu is heavy, hearty, smoky and BBQ saucy. What sets it apart from the competition (which is growing ever more legion) would have to be their in-house smoker and those fantastic ribs. I will most definitely be heading back to get me some more of that action.

Some time ago we featured a crowdfunding campaign for a new community bakery for Leeds on our website. The founders of the initiative required funding for ovens and an appropriate industrial unit and hoped to attract local investors. If, like us, you value really good handmade bread you’ll agree it seemed like a cause well worth supporting. Pictured: Phil Dacey Leeds Bread Co-op

he project soon morphed into Leeds Bread Co-op and has now been trading for just over a year. We decided to check in and see how things were going, and it seems they’re going pretty well. Word of the co-op’s wondrous baked goods is spreading rapidly throughout the region and they now supply a number of Leeds’ finer food establishments such as The Reliance, The Greedy Pig, Laynes Espresso, Friends of Ham, Outlaws Yacht Club, The Bridge

Pub in Kirkstall, and Mill Kitchen in Farsley to name but a few. It’s easy to see why, once you’ve tried it you won’t want bread from anywhere else. One of their specialities, which you could perhaps call their signature loaf, is the fantastic sourdough – you’re either hopelessly addicted to this bread or you’ve never tried it. The Co-op doesn’t have a shop, nor do they have any plans to open one in the foreseeable future. They’re currently concentrating on expanding their wholesale business, but they do run a subscription scheme through their website. Once you sign up you can order the bread you want every week and collect it from one of their many pick up points dotted around

the Leeds area. You can also find Leeds Bread Co-op at the regular farmers markets in Horsforth and Kirkstall. Although the co-op has been venturing further afield (such as to Pontefract for its annual liquorice festival), they are mindful of keeping things local and Leedscentric. Its ethos focuses on the importance of handmade, additivefree produce and also on how to share their knowledge and skill. They are currently running baking classes which are fully booked but they will be announcing new dates for 2015 so keep an eye on their website and social media if you’d like to get involved. As we love to champion local independent food producers and traders we’re properly chuffed to see Leeds Bread Co-op thriving. With their ethical approach, their commitment to quality and craft and, above all, their outstanding bread they’re a shining example of what makes Leeds’ food and drink scene so great.

The evening was an outstanding success and, as everyone gave their time and services totally free, it raised over £5,000 for St Gemma’s.

It was a breath of fresh air to meet people who genuinely and generously work for no financial gain for the benefit of vulnerable members of our society.” The All Star Variety Show committee will be staging another fundraising concert at the Queen’s Hall on 18th November.

The furniture is particularly interesting, with unique pieces created onsite by volunteers. Customised patterns and designs are produced to order. The Chapel Allerton shop also offers opportunities to learn to up-cycle so you can shabby chic your furniture at home.

This is when coughs and colds spread as we spend more time together indoors – so it’s a good time to think about our health over the Winter. Following my column last month I have been overwhelmed with people emailing me and stopping me in the street to ask if my wife has now had the baby, was it a girl or a boy and what was the name. Baby Gabriella was born right at the end of August and weighed in at 6lb 12oz. Many thanks to the many well-wishers (and even to the couple who told me that we must have had the baby as I looked terrible … and that was two days before she was born!) Well, Autumn is well and truly here. For the romantics amongst us tis the season for brisk walks in the park, berry picking and watching the landscape turn from green to gold. For me though, Autumn is very much about ensuring our locality team keeps on top of collecting fallen leaves from around our ward.

Year on year the leaf collections are really improving, but if you see an area that has clearly been missed, please do let me know so that I can get it actioned as soon as possible. Slippy, wet, mushy, leaves can be a real hazard, but the council is well geared up to moving them quite quickly – so if you could be our extra pair of eyes, it would be a huge assistance. Finally, I still have funds for a few more grit bins for this year. If you would like me to add your street to the list for a grit bin – do let me know and I will (as always) try my very best to help. For any and all local queries your Alwoodley councillors are always here to help.

be purchased from pharmacists - whatever your age and health. If you are ill, remember that A&E stands for Accident and Emergency. A sick child could have meningitis, and chest pains could mean a heart attack - so if you are genuinely worried don’t hesitate to go there. But for minor illness, a well stocked medicine cupboard, or discussion with a pharmacist or your GP surgery could suffice. A&E is not for minor illnesses - by the time you have been triaged (prioritised) you could be in for a very long wait, especially with the NHS nationally missing its four-hour waiting targets more and more often. If you are in doubt, call111 for advice. Finally, please look out for elderly friends and neighbours. Their living rooms should be 70F/21C and bedrooms 64F/18C,

Member of Parliament for Leeds North East On 25th July I set off from Donisthorpe Hall, off Shadwell Lane, to cycle to the town of Drancy on the outskirts of Paris. I discovered last year that my great-grandmother had been killed in AuschwitzBirkenau extermination camp in July 1942. Reina Sevilla was one of more than 70,000 Jews who were rounded up in Nazi occupied Paris in June 1942 and taken to La Muette, the halffinished social housing project that had been commandeered and made into a concentration camp.

Reina, my father’s maternal grandmother, had moved to Paris from Geneva in the mid 1930s. I decided that my 430mile charity bike ride to raise money for the nursing home should also be a trip to find out more about the role Drancy played in the tragic story of the Jews of Paris. Although I am an experienced cyclist, I found it hard going because I wasn’t fit enough and hadn’t done sufficient training. But after the first three days muscles grew stronger and my resilience greater.

Perhaps the best way to see the beautiful English countryside is to cycle through its back lanes and cycle paths at the height of Summer. I crossed the Channel from Newhaven to Dieppe and, riding the fabulous Avenue Verte, I arrived in Drancy eight days after leaving Leeds to be greeted by the town’s Deputy Mayor. The Shoah Memorial in Drancy is extraordinary, but the survivors of the Holocaust even more so. I was privileged to hear the first hand account of Parisian André Berkover, which was truly amazing and made me feel that my 700km ride had really been worth the effort, but that’s another story. And I raised £4,500 (so far) for Donisthorpe as well. Thank you to all the generous donors.

Inner Wheel Leeds By October 1914, the beds that had been installed in the Great Hall and library in the wartime hospital at Beckett Park were filling up fast. The buildings that had opened as a new training college for teachers the previous year, had now been taken over by the army and were renamed the Second Northern General Hospital.

Holds Tea Party for Marie Curie Cancer Care Inner Wheel Leeds has chosen Marie Curie Cancer Care as its charity for the year and recently held a Mad Hatter’s Blooming Great Tea Party in Adel to raise funds for the charity.

he first wounded men arrived at Leeds Station in September, to be greeted by the Lord Mayor and well-wishers who threw presents of tobacco and cigarettes whenever they could. “They came with the soil of France upon their great-coats”, wrote the hospital chaplain, Lieutenant Colonel J F Phillips for Leeds in the Great War (1923) “A few with support walked from the ambulance to the wards, the rest the stretcher-bearers carried. Some were entirely covered from view and these would not have been recognized by those who knew them best.” Some of the extraordinary stories from the hospital are told in the book Stories from the War Hospital, written and compiled by Richard Wilcocks, which was launched during the Headingley LitFest in March and has received a number of glowing reviews.

“The achievements of the medics at Beckett Park should be remembered and celebrated”, said Richard, Secretary of Headingley LitFest. “They worked extremely hard in difficult circumstances and saved many lives. The stories are mostly about survivors, but there are some inspiring romances there as well. Most of them come from descendants, because most of the official records have been lost. “I have included some of them in an illustrated talk for groups – this includes schools.” This month, Richard will be telling extraordinary true stories from the book at the Ilkley Literature Festival, in a free event at the Ilkley Playhouse on Tuesday 14th October. Contact Richard Wilcocks at headingleyhospital@gmail.com. Book details at www.firstworldwarhospital.co.uk

“We had a fantastic time at our Blooming Great Tea Party and were delighted to have raised over £995”, said Jenny Jones, President of Inner Wheel Leeds. “It was a great day with some fabulous hats and we had a lovely day with friends new and old. All the money we raised will help Marie Curie Nurses provide more free care to terminally ill people in West Yorkshire as well as vital emotional support for their families. We are delighted to support Marie Curie Cancer care for the whole year” To get help from the Marie Curie Nursing Service, talk to your GP, district nurse or discharge nurse. eanstalk, the local children’s literacy charity, is part of a new campaign to get all eleven year olds reading well by 2025. Apparently, one and a half million children will reach the age of 11 unable to read well unless action is taken to tackle the reading crisis. Called ‘Read On Get On’, the coalition is made up of teachers, parents, businesses and charities including Save the Children. Last year, 1,128 pupils left primary schools in Leeds unable to read to the required level. The charity currently supports 372 children in over 60 schools across Leeds and Bradford and is currently recruiting and training volunteers to work with children who are failing behind with their reading.

The ‘Read On. Get On’ campaign aims to create a nation of strong readers by supporting parents to read with young children; urging people to volunteer to help

disadvantaged children improve their reading; building a coalition of the county’s most influential public, private and charitable organisations to support the mission; and urging all political parties to support the 2025 target. “The one-to-one support offered by Beanstalk’s reading helpers plays a vital role in helping children to read well by age 11”, said Sue Porto, Chief Executive of Beanstalk. We are delighted to be a part of ‘Read On. Get On.” Beanstalk is currently looking for volunteers to work across Leeds and Bradford. Leeds for Change works to promote social change across the city

Leeds for Change is a collaboration between Leeds Tidal, Taking Soundings and Together For Peace, and works to promote social change across the city. They aim to connect groups, facilitate cooperation and collaboration; improve access for individuals who want to campaign, take action or get involved at any level, whether on an issue in their local area, or further afield; and create a hub for sharing resources and skills amongst those who hold a similar vision for Leeds. For more information and to book your free ticket to Summat New.

The driver would be required to drive the bus a just few hours a week. They would need a PCVD1 style license and be qualified in MiDAS. PATS is an advantage but not essential. “We’d like to have a driver who could join us for ideally for two days a week”, said Cathryn Dixon, centre manager. “It’s a very rewarding job and a great place to work. You’d be helping children with additional needs reach the centre, where they benefit from donkey assisted therapy - riding, grooming and spending time with the donkeys.” The Donkey Sanctuary provides donkey assisted therapy to 190 local children with additional needs from Leeds and the surrounding area each week, as well as outreach visits to care homes. eeds Lions recently hosted their latest exchange holiday, welcoming a group of disabled German young people to Leeds. The Leeds Lions have been ‘exchanging’ for over 40 years. Over the years, young people have been joined by disabled adults too. This trip has been the first real holiday for many of their guests. This year four Leeds Lions groups participated in organising the holiday- Leeds, Leeds Skyrack (Headingley), Garforth and District, and Otley Lions all worked together to give the group days out to remember. They stayed at Hinsley Hall in Headingley and went bowling, boxing (at Hunslet Boys Club), to the seaside and to

Four Leeds Lions groups participated in organising the holiday the Deep (Hull), and enjoyed many meals out. “This was the first time I had been able to participate in the exchange and, as I enjoyed it so much, I sincerely hope it won’t be the last!” said Caroline Fields, who also hosted one of the events at her home. “I hope to accompany our Yorkshire disabled children over to Germany in the near future.”

Freemasonry in North Leeds is thriving and, in these uncertain times, the principles which underlie Freemasonry have never been as relevant and important. Founded on three great principles of brotherly love, relief and truth, it’s the charitable side of Freemasonry that will, perhaps, come as a surprise to many. After the National Lottery, Freemasons are responsible for the most substantial donations to charitable causes. A great many worthy causes in our local community have benefitted from very substantial donations from Freemasons. Freemasons are, generally, a conservative bunch and very rarely shout about their achievements or contributions to society. Local Freemasons (many of whom meet at Lodges at Castle Grove Masonic Hall

in Headingley) have made donations to 14 local hospices in the last year, and to the Yorkshire branch of the British Red Cross to go towards the purchase of two non-emergency ambulances. Since April 2008, Freemasons across the West Riding of Yorkshire have given 20,000 teddy bears to children attending accident and emergency departments in local hospitals as part of our TLC (Teddies for Loving Care) campaign. Masonry welcomes members from all backgrounds and religions and information about Freemasonry in our region can easily be obtained by visiting the Province of Yorkshire West Riding’s website at www. wrprovince.net For those who are genuinely interested in finding out more, they

eeds Older People’s Forum recently secured Big Lottery funding of £1M per year for six years, starting July 2015. This will be used to help tackle the loneliness and isolation experienced by many older people. There are 246,000 older people in Leeds, and 14,500 of these are over 85. Numbers are growing every year and it is estimated that about 15% of older people are lonely and socially isolated. This amounts to 37,000 people in Leeds. The funding from Big Lottery will allow Leeds Older People’s Forum to establish a wide range of services and projects to tackle this serious and growing problem.

Community News

Loneliness blights both individual lives and our communities through ill-health and unhappiness. It puts carers and relatives under enormous pressure. The Forum aims to reach at least 15,000 older people and help them to move out of the shadows cast by loneliness. Working with a wide range of organisations, including Leeds City Council, as well as the voluntary and business sectors, the project will: • promote Leeds as an age friendly city, • develop inter-generational links, • improve connections with older people from street level up, • provide support and friendship at home, • increase the number of volunteers in local communities. The project will build on the excellent work being done across Leeds and focus on the more vulnerable, hard to reach people. Most importantly, older people

will be at the heart of managing and designing this work. “This is great news for Leeds”, said Bill Rollinson, Chair of Leeds Older People’s Forum, which supports organisations across Leeds providing services for older people. “We will offer older people currently living in the shadows of loneliness a time to shine. This is why we have called our project ‘Out of the Shadows: Time to Shine’.” For further information, contact Rachel Cooper, Project Co-ordinator at Leeds Older People’s Forum, on 0113 244 1697, or rachel@opforum. org.uk

Home & Garden

A month for planning and planting to give your garden the best start for next year. Cut Flower Patch My garden is only small but for the past few years I have devoted a little patch to growing some flowers for cutting. Hardy annuals are great for this. Many have a long flowering season and it’s possible to make it even longer by doing Autumn sowings as well as Spring ones. The seeds planted in Autumn will be large enough to flower much earlier than the Spring sown ones. Seeds can be sown directly into soil that has been raked and weeded during September, and if the weather is mild, in early October too. Here are some lovely ones to try: Cornflowers,

Bulbs are the most wonderful way to add splashes of colour to the Spring garden. I use them in all my planting schemes to start the season as early as possible often matching them to the colour scheme of the rest of the planting. In a pink and purple border I might use white and pink Anemone blanda and white crocuses for early interest, followed by Tulip ‘Purissima’, purple/pink ‘Maytime’ and the lovely double

pale pink ‘Angelique’. Later tall mauve Alliums would make a statement with their spherical heads of starry flowers. A bed with a ‘hot’ colour scheme could start off with golden Crocus and little yellow Narcissi then Tulip ‘Prinses Irene’ or ‘West Point’. Fritillaria imperialis (Crown Imperial) can be added to bring dramatic shape and colour in late Spring. You can plant your bulbs this month to be rewarded with lovely colour when you need it most. So what are you waiting for?

It won’t surprise you to learn that you can also plant your garlic this month. It is worth buying special garlic from a seed supplier or garden centre rather than using garlic from the supermarket - the reason being that supermarket garlic often comes from warmer climes and may not do well in our Yorkshire conditions. Garlic specially bought for planting is also free from diseases and fresh so it should grow well.

Album Reviews Serious Sam Barrett – Anyroad X-Ray Cat Trio – Bloody Deeds Brudenell Social Club

An evening of superb performances by some of the best musicians in town succeeded in conjuring up an atmosphere redolent of the American Deep South in the Brudenell’s main room to mark the launch of a pair of excellent albums. n amusing sight on the night was what amounted to a crowded cloakroom-like depository for skateboards. It was on the skating scene, after all, where Serious Sam earned his nickname, due to his single-minded determined approach to honing his boarding skills. The Yorkshire Rambler’s supportive buddies The climax from the scene were obviously to that out in force. thrilling It’s this same seriousness and devotion that Sam has night at the evidently also applied to his Brudenell guitar chops and songcraft. ‘Anyroad’, released on his saw the Roots/Americana orientated stage label, Yadig, is a superb longplayer, which successfully pulls crowded off the feat of presenting classic, with a old time country-folk-blues plethora styles in a manner that feels authentic and at the same time of guests fresh and contemporary. and friends With album opener, Back on the Jack, Sam sets his stall out for an allearly with a booze-soaked ditty together jam underpinned by an Appalachian out fingerpicked guitar style that runs throughout the album. The likes of She’s My Only One,

Better Give it Up and title track, Anyroad, also incorporate some very tasty, slinky slide guitar that intertwines beautifully with Sam’s picking and strumming. The stripped down, straightforward arrangements, acoustic instrumentation and rhythm work are all laid down here with sparkling production that makes every element shine. Over the album’s eleven tracks Anyroad sustains an upbeat, bittersweet mood of nostalgia, poignancy and optimism. It’s a compelling listen and a particularly accomplished piece of work. Having caught X-Ray Cat Trio once or twice before, it seems this no-nonsense outfit has morphed into a different kind of beast. The rockabilly song stylings have been somewhat dialled down in favour of dirty, swamp-blues instrumentals. The scuzzy, reverb heavy guitar of tracks like Miss October (Serious Bogart) have a Waitsian (that’s Tom Waits, if you’re unclear)

quality and could conceivably soundtrack a Jim Jarmusch movie (obviously a good thing). The trio seems newly energised by the addition of Joe Love on drums, whose rumbling, rattling rhythm work fuses perfectly with the almost terrifyingly muscular and intense double bass playing of Adam Richards and frontman Nico’s growly vocals and dynamic fretwork. The notion that XRCT’s punk-blues remit has been broadened to incorporate more of a surf-rock ‘n’ roll element is confirmed by Bloody Deeds’ closing track, a version of Dick Dale’s Taco Wagon. Both live and on record X-Ray Cat prove themselves to be on top form and one hopes that the members other projects (among them Nico’s role in heavy, gothmetal powerhouse Black Moth) allow them sufficient time to pursue this further. The climax to that thrilling night at the Brudenell saw the stage crowded with a plethora of guests and friends for an alltogether jam out, throwing accordion, harmonica and more besides into the mix (duelling double basses, anyone?). Thus was brought to a close an evening of sterling work by some of our finest home grown talent. The hugely enjoyable and highly recommended albums, Bloody Deeds and Anyroad are available now from Jumbo Records on both compact disk and vinyl. Do yourself a favour and go snap ‘em up.

I imagine

FILM

REVIEW BY BRENDAN CAMPBELL

drawn much comparison to

OBVIOUS CHILD DIRECTED BY: GILLIAN ROBESPIERRE STARRING: ::JENNY SLATE, JAKE LACY, GABY HOFFMANN, DAVID CROSS CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 84 MINS don’t know if it’s a result of Obvious Child being referred to in the media as ‘the abortion rom-com’ or a particularly meagre marketing budget, but I found it somewhat telling that when I caught this film only a week after its release it was tucked away on the smallest screen in the multiplex and I had the cosy auditorium all to myself. A shame, really, as this charming, honest and funny picture deserves a bigger audience (well, at the very least, bigger than just me). Jenny Slate (whose stint on Saturday Night Live was cut short when she accidently swore on air) is superb as Donna, a young Brooklynite who works in a second-hand bookstore by day (Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Books – best name for a bookstore ever!) and performs raw, confessional stand-up comedy by night. Donna’s already somewhat squalid life begins to unravel further when she’s unceremoniously dumped by her jackass boyfriend and soon thereafter loses her job. Following an alcohol-fuelled bitter, vitriolic and mortifying to watch post-break up onstage meltdown, she runs into a genuinely pleasant chap, shares some more beverages with him and, well, I think you can see where this is heading. Not too long after, Donna begins exhibiting pregnancy symptoms and casts her mind back to that boozy evening (“I remember seeing a condom, I just don’t know exactly

it has

what it did”) and is gently chided by her friend Nellie (Gaby Hoffmann) for “playing Russian roulette with your vagina”. At this point Obvious Child reveals itself to be interesting, brave and important in an understated kind of way. You see, what happens next is Donna decides to have an abortion. What’s more, she makes the decision as a sensible, pragmatic

Lena Dunham’s series, Girls, chronicling as it does, the messy lives of characters muddling their way through

choice that is entirely hers to make. More astounding still, she actually goes through with it. She isn’t shamed or guilt-tripped into changing her mind and she doesn’t suffer any terrible consequences as a result of her decision, in fact (spoiler alert) everything works out okay. Just why this is such a big deal is because it’s such a rarity (virtually unprecedented, in fact) for an American film to deal with such a scenario and have it play out in this manner. Something that irked me somewhat about Juno and

Knocked Up (both good movies that I otherwise enjoyed) was that when, in those films, the notion of termination gingerly reared its head it was pretty much dismissed out of hand as if that option simply isn’t on the table. Admittedly, they would have been much shorter movies had those pregnant characters decided to abort and their dramatic narratives would have been derailed, but stay with me here. What it comes down to is the studios bankrolling these pictures being terrified of angering the American religious Right and bending over backwards to make sure they don’t risk losing the god-fearing dollar. It’s probably just as well then that Obvious Child was made on a shoestring and is unlikely to be expected to make a great deal of money. It’s a quiet kind of landmark movie; low-budget and low-fi, managing to make its point by flying under the radar and avoiding incurring the deranged wrath of

the bible belt nut-jobs. Also, as it’s written by, directed by, starring and about a woman and dealing with its subjects the way it does, it’s a small but significant triumph for feminism in film. But, perhaps I’m making too much of what the film skilfully plays down. In the end, Obvious Child is a romantic comedy, albeit an unlikely one. I imagine it has drawn much comparison to Lena Dunham’s series, Girls, chronicling as it does, the messy lives of characters muddling their way through. It’s funny, astutely observed, very crude and disarmingly, surprisingly sweet. Slate’s irresistible leading performance alone is worth the price of admission and hopefully means we’ll be seeing a lot more of her. And, it features the great Paul Simon song with which it shares its title. Sold? I hope so. I’d hate to think I’m one of only a handful of people to see it.

Skelton Grange Environment Centre recently received funding from the Big Lottery and National Grid for ‘access2nature’, a five year project to improve the wellbeing of people in Leeds, by providing a range of social, learning and volunteering opportunities in the outdoors.

un by the charity The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), the team at Skelton Grange has long recognised that looking after green places isn’t just about caring for nature, but also about caring for people. “We welcome thousands of people every year to take part in environmental education and play activities”, said Manager Caroline Crossley. “We also support adult trainees and volunteers to lead education sessions, conservation and biodiversity projects. This gives people the opportunity to learn new things, make friends, build confidence and develop skills for further training or employment.” In the last six months, over

2,000 people have visited Skelton Grange as a part of the project. Children and adults have learnt about nature, bushcraft skills, being active outdoors and volunteering. The site is full of ponds, woodlands and wildlife. People have commented that they feel happier, more confident and healthier outdoors than they did before and understand more about what they can do to look after the environment. ‘One Day’ Aims to Improve Treatment and Support for Trauma Patients Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation recently launched ‘Day One’ a new fundraising initiative designed to support trauma patients across Yorkshire. Leeds is one of 22 Major Trauma Centres in England, providing around-the-clock lifesaving treatment for seriously injured patients. Major trauma is the sixth highest cause of death across the globe and the fifth highest cause of disability in all age groups. Day One aims to improve treatment for patients who have suffered major trauma; provide support for their families; support staff with training and education; fund state-of-the-art medical equipment; and fund research and innovation here in Leeds. It will deliver the very best support for patients through all aspects of their recovery – from simple advice and education via its website, to legal and financial support from experts. Donations are critical to help fund this much needed care for patients and their families, as well as for research and equipment. HS Blood and Transplant is asking people to make giving blood a part of their routine, and is urging donors to make an appointment to donate and help keep stocks healthy throughout the Autumn months. Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales. It is vital that blood stocks are maintained at all times, as red blood cells have a shelf life of just 35 days and platelets a shelf life of only seven. The Service needs to collect enough blood to meet patient needs

and regular donors are crucial in enabling it to do so. “Some donors may have been abroad recently to someplace that means they need to take a break from donating”, said Donna Batty, Lead Donor Relations Manager. “Whether you’ve donated before or are thinking about giving blood for the first time, check if your foreign holiday has affected whether you can donate now.” Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in good health could potentially become a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. To register as a donor, find

Teeing Off for Charity Philip Goldberg, a partner at Lester Morrill Solicitors in Leeds, recently hosted a golf day at Moor Allerton Golf Club, in memory of his brother, Richard. This was the second annual golf day held in aid of the Richard Goldberg Foundation and it raised over £21,000 for charity. The day saw 96 players in 24 teams participate and money was raised through entry fees and a fantastic auction – prizes included tickets to an England qualifying match at Wembley, Centre Court tickets for Wimbledon, and corporate tickets for Leeds Rhinos.

The money raised will be distributed to local youth groups, scouts and guides associations, and children’s charities including Grief Encounters, an organisation that helps bereaved children. “I’m very proud that money we have raised in Richard’s name will benefit children both locally and nationally”, said Philip. “The day was a huge success and I would like to thank everyone who attended.”

Trade Secrets from Molly Maid Cleaning Experts It’s a common misconception that the toilet is the place where most germs can be found in the home or workplace. Molly Maid North Leeds and Wetherby reveals five shocking things dirtier than the toilet and top tips to help clean them 1. Keyboards - When was the last time you cleaned your computer key board? Never..... well that’s the problem. Unplug the keyboard and use a soft bristled brush or can of compressed air to remove the dust. Then dampen a napkin by rubbing alcohol or a keyboard friendly cleaning solution and gently clean the keys

2. Mobile phones - Use a clean microfiber cloth and cotton buds to remove dust and marks from your phone. 3. Office desk - We sit at it five out of seven days a week, we lean on it, we eat at it - but it’s often not cleaned thoroughly. Regularly dust and clean your desk with antibacterial spray. 4. Light switches - We touch these almost every time we enter or leave a room. Disinfect them by wiping with a cloth, slightly dampened with alcohol. Credit cards – they are more well travelled than you realise, they’ve been to bars, restaurants and even abroad. Clean with a damp disinfectant wipe. Molly MAID is the UK’s leading professional domestic cleaning company, established more than 30 years ago. Rachel Williams who runs Molly

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Paul Mullen feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Paul is

finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
