Broaden Your Horizons this Autumn

Do you fancy learning a language or taking up a new hobby? There is a huge variety of courses available across the city.

Dear Readers, This year is flying by altogether too fast! Children are heading back to school and people are considering what interesting things they might take up to help them through the dark days of Winter.

We got in touch with a number of higher and further education establishments to see what they had to offer and discovered that no one will be stuck for choice! This month also sees the start of some very exciting exhibitions – The Roman Empire: Power & People, is an important exhibition which will provide a rare opportunity to see objects from the British Museum, combined with items from Yorkshire’s own prized collections. And, ‘The Vanity of Small

Differences’, a series of six tapestries by Grayson Perry, will be on show at Temple Newsam House from 23rd August. Northern Ballet brings its stunning ‘Dracula’ to West Yorkshire Playhouse; and Phoenix Dance presents ‘Tenacity’, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre. There is also news of numerous community projects, snippets of history, restaurant reviews (and good news for coeliacs!), and various news from your councillors. The deadline for the October edition is before 1st Sept for news and events and 10th September for advertising (1st & 7th Oct for November edition.

We look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Carole, Jack and the team.

FRANK KIDSON (1855-1926)

FOLK-SONG COLLECTOR AND ANTIQUARIAN, ARTIST AND WRITER Frank Kidson was a musical Sherlock Holmes, tracking down the traditional songs and music of the past, recording, collecting and preserving the words and tunes that had once been a familiar part of people’s everyday lives but were rapidly being forgotten and lost. He pioneered the revival of interest in folk music in those late Victorian years when the old, popular tunes were being replaced by songs of the city music halls and concert rooms. But folk music was not his only passion. He painted, collected, researched and wrote, not only about music but also about the history of his beloved home town, Leeds. He was born in 1855 at 7

Discussing Once again, Heritage Open Days (Thursday 11th – Sunday 14th September) offers a feast of architecture, exhibitions, guided walks and activities, which are free to all, courtesy of custodians, building owners and knowledgeable volunteers. All across the country people will be celebrating their local area. So, whether it’s sport, family history, stained glass windows, village life in days gone by, architectural features, influential Leeds people, or just an opportunity to get behind those normally closed doors, there’s something for everyone! More reasons to celebrate North Leeds this year include a chance to tour Carnegie

Current Affairs in Leeds Professor Bill Jones from Liverpool Hope University, who recently moved to Leeds, is seeking to establish a Current Affairs Discussion Group in Leeds, similar to the one he has run very successfully in Manchester for 40 years. The aim of the course is to select a topic - either domestic or international - and, using a detailed briefing, subject it to a weekly analysis and discussion. The Manchester course attracts mainly retired people with a keen interest in such matters who enjoy discussion for its own sake, as a means of keeping up to date and keeping their intellects active and alive. Topics likely to be covered include: conflict in Middle East, prospects of the political parties and the coalition as the next election approaches, Scottish independence and the Centenary of World War I. The group will meet on Thursdays, 10.30am – 12.30pm in St George’s Centre, Great George St, Leeds, LS1 3BR, from 2nd October – 4th December. For further information about the course, fees etc. contact bill.jones@sky.com or call 0113 293 3548.

said Stef Stephenson, manager of the Business & IP Centre in Leeds Central Library. “Anyone who has started a business, or is thinking about starting a business, will find the workshops beneficial.” The Business & IP Centre has provided information, resources and workshops for business for many years, as well as guidance on protecting products and services by using Intellectual Property (IP) – patents, trade marks, registered designs and copyright. Susan, whose niece suffers from total alopecia, grew her hair to the required length (12 inches) before visiting Mutu. She also raised over £400 and this, together with the hair, was sent to the Trust to be made into a child’s wig. Mutu has already been contacted via facebook by a group of ladies who are going to grow their hair and do the same early next year. Mutu has offered to cut their hair for free and is extending this offer to any NLL readers who would like to do the same for this worthwhile charity. An alternative way to achieve your goals Pitman Training Wetherby is aiming to bridge the knowledge gap and provide more informed career advice and support for school leavers. Throughout August and September they are offering free career profiling sessions and showcasing vocational training as a viable, cost-effective alternative to university. Pitman Training offers students support and helps to guide them to possible job opportunities. There are many different ways of learning and, for those interested in acquiring further skills, online courses could be a great way to learn while you earn. “We regularly hear that school leavers often require training before they can be of real value to a business”, said centre manager Christine Walsh. “We are filling this gap and helping everyone to be more productive.” If you are interested in free course demonstrations, help in understanding the local job market, and advice on which skills are in demand by local employers, contact them on 01937 548533, http://wetherby.pitman-training.com/

This Autumn, The Romans are coming to Leeds City Museum! From 20th September – 4th January 2015, a new exhibition, ‘Roman Empire: Power & People’ will provide a rare opportunity for visitors to see objects from the British Museum, combined with items from Yorkshire’s own prized collections, giving the exhibition a unique local context. The exhibition includes some of the greatest treasures from the British Museum’s collections of Roman, Romano-British and Romano-Egyptian artefacts. Leeds City Museum has carefully selected rarely seen Roman items from its collections, and secured items from other local museums, to show alongside the extraordinary pieces provided by The British Museum, presenting an astonishing showcase of the Romans in Yorkshire, Britain and across the Empire to as far afield as the Eastern Mediterranean. Complementing the exhibition is an extensive schedule of activities and events to appeal to a broad range of visitors. A series of lectures will cover subjects such as Roman finds in Yorkshire, crime and punishment in Roman Britain, hoards of Roman coins, Roman York and new archaeological evidence, courtesy

of the development of University of York’s new campus. Peppered liberally throughout the exhibition will be audio visuals, interactives and family trails, helping to bring the ideas behind the exhibition to life and enhance the themes of the power and influence of Rome. “Being part of this tour means that we are once again pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve for our visitors”, said Katherine Baxter, Curator of Archaeology at Leeds City Museum. “These 160 objects from the British Museum will build a picture of life as a Roman. The exhibition addresses the vastness and power of the Roman Empire and Britain’s place within it, balanced with an insight into the personal lives of the Romans here. Was being Roman the same for people in Rome as it was for those in Yorkshire? Beautiful jewellery and near-perfect children’s clothes will be shown alongside a combination of personal, military and religious treasures. It’s a major exhibition for Leeds and we’re privileged to be able to show these extraordinary items

‘Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle: Made in the Great War’ is a multi-media performance telling the story of a Leeds fiddle which took nearly a century to complete.

In 2009 Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with the group Bellowhead, bought a violin in Oxford. It looked like a new instrument, but the label inside gave its date as 1915, together with the name ‘Richard S Howard’. Research revealed that the violin had been made – but never finished – by a luthier and some-time music hall performer from Leeds. He had been conscripted in 1915 at the age of 35 and was killed two

years later during the battle of Messines Ridge. The unfinished violin was given to his daughter Rose, and on her death the parts were bought at auction. The violin was finally finished by luthier Roger Claridge in 2007. The fiddle was then placed in the window of an Oxford music shop where it was spotted by Sam. This multi-media performance telling the story of the fiddle, marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. Collaborating with award-winning storyteller Hugh Lupton, fellow Bellowhead band mate Paul Sartin and acclaimed concertina player Rob Harbron, as well as Bellowhead lighting designer Emma Thompson, who developed set, projections and lighting for the show, the performance brings the reality of World War I into 2014, as Sam plays the actual fiddle. ‘Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle’ is at City Varieties on Thursday 18th September at 7.30pm. Tickets (£15) are available from 0113 243 0808 or cityvarieties. co.uk

Headingley LitFest’s Work with Schools During Headingley LitFest, few people realise the work that has been going on behind the scenes with local schools. Last year, the festival completed poetry workshops with nine local schools, and commissioned local poet James Nash to explore the ‘inner poet’ with youngsters from Brudenell, Ireland Wood, Quarry Mount, St Chad’s, Shire Oak, Spring Bank and Weetwood primary schools. “I had three sessions in each school”, said James, “one to inspire, one to edit, and the final session was an opportunity for my young poets to share their writing with other pupils and parents. It engaged children with the idea of writing, developed key literacy skills and gave them an experience of performance. Their growth in confidence in all areas was remarkable.” Performance poet Michelle Scally Clarke worked with City of Leeds and Ralph Thoresby schools. Their joint poetry ‘slam’ was a huge success. “Spoken word is a great way to begin creative writing”, said Michelle. “It allows writing, literature and language to be enjoyed first then learnt. These pupils inspire me with their stories, poems and songs and I have no doubt that all will continue to perform, write and grow.” Read more about Headingley LitFest’s community programme at www.headingleylitfest.org.uk/

The longlist for the 2014 prize Minoli Salgado’s ‘A Little Dust on the Eyes’, the winning novel of the biennial SI Leeds Literary Prize 2012 for unpublished fiction by Black and Asian women, will be published this Autumn. The long-list for the 2014 prize has been selected by a panel of judges, led by Kerry Young, author of ‘Pau’ and ‘Gloria’. This year’s shortlisted writers will appear at Ilkley Festival at an event fronted by bestselling crime novelist Dreda Say Mitchell on Wednesday 15th October, when the winner and runners-up will be announced.

Meanwhile, northern cult band Sentimentalists is performing a benefit gig for the prize at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, on Saturday 6th September. The Fall’s guitarist, Pete Greenway, described Sentimentalists as “the band that the world is waiting for” and Radio Leeds’ Rozina Breen thinks their music is “Special, funny, just gorgeous”. Northern Ballet’s Dracula returns to West Yorkshire Playhouse This Autumn prepare for a performance with dramatic bite! Northern Ballet is resurrecting its wonderful Dracula, created by Artistic Director David Nixon and last performed in 2009. Based on Bram Stoker’s legendary novel, the ballet reveals the tormented world of the immortal Count, who should inspire repulsion but has instead seduced generations with his mesmerising sensuality. This dark and sinister tale is played out through Northern Ballet’s unique blend of dance, gripping theatre, gothic sets and costumes.

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 24

“The popularity of Bram Stoker’s Dracula has not only outlived its author but also gained popularity and many new interpretations”, said David Nixon. “What would you give to live forever rather than facing the unknown of death? To what ends are we prepared to let our bonds of friendship and love take us? These are some of the questions that fascinated me as I approached the ballet. “Dracula is often viewed as an evil, preying character but he knows love and will act upon it. All creatures need to be loved and Dracula is no exception, the love he shares with Mina transcends the boundaries of good and evil.” David’s choreography and costume designs are complemented by Ali Allen’s set design, which brings the Gothic style of Victorian England and the mysterious medieval world of Transylvania to the stage. LIDOS Presents ‘The Vanity of Small Differences’, a series of six tapestries

World Premier

by Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry, will be

of ‘Supertown’!

on show at Temple Newsam House from Saturday 23rd August – Sunday 7th December.

he tapestries tell the story of twenty-first century social mobility through the fictional character, Tim Rakewell. Created during the BAFTA winning Channel 4 documentary series ‘All in the Best Possible Taste’, they explore Perry’s fascination with British taste and class mobility, making direct reference to the series ‘A Rake’s Progress’ by William Hogarth (1697-1764), who has long influenced Perry’s work. Historic wall hangings are an integral part of Temple Newsam House. Grayson Perry’s contemporary tapestries will hang in six adjoining rooms, alongside fine art, furniture, ceramics and bed hangings from the 19th century. It is hoped that this will spark further debate about class and taste through time in British society. “Grayson Perry has infused a clever mix of form and colour to portray his fascination with taste, how this affects our choices and what it means”, said Leeds Museums and Galleries, Keeper Bobbie Robertson. “The images are imposing and somehow, as a nation, we understand

each tapestry perfectly. How Perry has shown this is supremely clever and these tapestries displayed amongst our collection at Temple Newsam House make complete sense. We couldn’t be more delighted to host this daring exhibition here in Leeds.” Unfortunately Grayson’s tapestries will be inaccessible to wheelchair users and people with limited mobility, as the South wing of the house is only accessible by stairs. Finding wall spaces large enough to accommodate the works has been a challenge. However, the interpretation space is accessible, with information about the show, a film of the tapestries in situ and a digital guide app to zoom in and view the details. Entrance to the exhibition is free with normal admission to the House.

This is an exciting year for LIDOS. Their September production will be the World Premiere of ‘Supertown’, a brand new comedy musical! Writing duo, James Sidgwick and musician Robert Sanders (who’s worked as both MD and pianist for LIDOS), are delighted for the opportunity to present a show that they’ve been working on for over a year. It is a twist on a comic book story about superheroes, and is full of songs and catchy tunes. “When we started writing it, we didn’t know where it would lead”, said Robert. “But seeing the posters and hearing our songs it’s quite amazing!” Both James and Robert are on the production team, along with choreographers Donna Wells and Emma Tempest, and stage manager Paul Harding. The cast is spending its Summer learning songs and dance routines and preparing to give Supertown a spectacular introduction! Supertown runs Wednesday 17th – Saturday 20th September at The Carriageworks. Tickets from 0113 224 3801.

Phoenix Dance Theatre presents ‘Tenacity’ at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from Wednesday 24th – Saturday 27th September. The show, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, starts with Jane Dudley’s striking short film ‘Harmonica Breakdown’ from 1939, which was her response to the American Depression and family life in the Dust Bowl era. This is followed by emerging choreographer Alessandra Seutin’s ‘1976’, which tells the story of two schoolgirls caught up in the Soweto uprising in South Africa. Incorporating projected images

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 27

and witness testimonies, the piece fuses contemporary with street and African dance. The finale, set to Bobby McFerrin’s ‘The 23rd Psalm’ is one of the most moving ever presented by Phoenix. Gary Lambert’s ‘Longevity’ is an emotional duet that looks at personal rights and freedom, inspired by the powerful vocal rhythms of Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a Dream’ speech. And, ‘The Audacious One’, by choreographer and former Phoenix dancer Warren Adams, is a taut, passionate look into a world of political intrigue and power. Based on Barack Obama’s keynote address ‘The Audacity of Hope’ it examines the question ‘What

do we do once we agree to disagree?’ Seven sharply dressed dancers perform this fluid, challenging and exciting choreography to selected movements from Mozart’s ‘Requiem’. ‘Tenacity’ is at Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, Quarry Hill, LS2 7PA at 7.30pm. Tickets from 0113 220 8008

It doesn’t hurt that the chef behind the enterprise is Michelin awarded Simon Shaw During the brilliant and hilarious first season of The Trip with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, I was surprised to see that at each of the prestigious and innovative restaurants the pair would visit, Coogan would invariably opt for the dullest menu items – soup to start, and for the main course, the chicken. The chicken?! Some of the finest and most interesting cuisine in the country is available to you and you go for the chicken? You disappoint me, Coogan. A talented comic you may be but a gourmand? Perhaps not. The inclusion of the inevitable chicken dish on more expansive or experimental menus seems often to be pandering to the unadventurous, those whose timid palates can’t handle the richness or complexity of red meat, game or (God forbid) offal. That said, however, I’m sure that even the most consummate carnivore would concede that sometimes, when it’s done right, nothing beats a really great chicken dinner. Which brings me (finally!)

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 30

to Bird and Beast, a new venture whose raison d’etre is the humble and unassuming fowl (free range, well bred and locally sourced from Sykes House Farms naturally) and which admirably abides by the guiding principle of keeping it simple and doing it well. In this case, extremely well. And it doesn’t hurt that the chef behind the enterprise is Michelin awarded Simon Shaw, proprietor of the highly acclaimed El Gato Negro in Ripponden. Amid Leeds’ current culinary landscape the opening of Bird and Beast seems like a bold move by virtue of its very ‘unboldness’. There’s little you can’t find food-wise ‘round here these days; we’ve got everything from Blumenthalesque gastro-science and a thriving street food scene, to a plethora of meat-orientated establishments offering burgers,

It’s reasonably priced casual dining carried off with class and panache

ribs etc. and I actually think one would now struggle to find any pork in this town that isn’t pulled. But chicken? Well, now that Nandos’ offshore tax-dodging ways have been exposed and it’s no longer the most ethically cool place to get your peri-peri fix, there are few quality options. And so it is that Bird and Beast strides confidently into the arena with its stripped down, no nonsense menu that’s all killer, no filler. When one sets foot inside the spacious, high ceilinged dining

room with its tastefully low key décor, you know exactly what you’re after. There’ll be no endless deliberating over the menu here; the chicken is served whole, halved or quartered, you pick which size, choose a side or two and you’re away! As we ordered our drinks and began our (swift) perusal of the menu, the chap serving us (who transpired to be one of the owners) explained how the chicken is prepared and pointed out the sauces on offer. They don’t make

15/08/2014 17:19

their own sauces at Bird and Beast, the time and effort required they feel is better spent getting the chicken right, but they’ve cherrypicked a selection of sauces they think are great. “We’ve even got Nandos sauces”, our waiter pointed out, pre-empting our puzzlement at their stocking a competitor’s product. “We’re not crazy about how they do their chicken but we really like their sauce.” Fair enough. As it turns out sampling the array of condiments ends up being part of the fun. So, to the food! The chicken is double marinated, then steamed,

oven cooked and finished on the rotisserie over cherry wood chips and charcoal to add a bit of smokiness. As there were two of us we ordered a whole bird with sides. Our waiter assured us we could take any leftovers with us for use in sandwiches the next day. No chance. As we began tucking in it quickly became clear; there would be no sandwiches! The preparation process produces a chicken feast that keeps the meat succulently moist, whilst unlocking flavour one might not have thought possible, encased in perfectly crispy skin (oh, chicken skin, how I love thee!). While the bird was undoubtedly the star of the show, the side orders more than held their own– the sweet potato wedges were just right and the coleslaw was delicious, the perfect balance of crunch and creaminess. Bird and Beast also pride themselves on their salads which they change frequently. We had the

orange and cashew with baby gem, spring onion, chillies and orange and balsamic dressing which was wonderfully light, refreshing and summery. As for the ‘Beast’ element of the operation, we’re eager to pay another visit to sample their Sunday roasts; sirloin or beef and slow cooked belly pork which, if their chicken is anything to go by, are bound to be outstanding and Bird & Beast’s roasts are all gluten free! For reasonably priced casual dining carried off with class and panache, look no further, and the restaurant is perfectly suitable for large parties or families. We’ll certainly be returning. More and more restaurants are offering gluten free choices on their menus, which is great for coeliacs and all those who suffer from wheat allergies. But now Leeds boasts a completely gluten free restaurant – 2 Oxford Place, right beside the Town Hall. Owner Victoria Hall was working as a speech therapist in London but, as a coeliac herself, she constantly baked. Well, one thing led to another – friends asked her to bake for them, shops asked her to supply them with bread and cakes. Soon she found herself working as a speech therapist all day, baking most of the night, and delivering to customers first thing in the morning. Her baking became so popular someone finally suggested she should ditch the day job and give in to her passion – food and baking. This was not at option in London, so she headed home to Leeds. 2 Oxford Place opened just a few months ago and is already building a loyal clientele – both with and without intolerances. Tucked around the side of the Town Hall, this little red brick terrace tempts you in with a lovely display of glass dome covered cakes in the window. Inside is warm and welcoming with recycled furniture and numerous touches of vintage. We stopped in for a quick supper. The dinner menu offered a choice of four starters and eight mains – perfect for someone like me who always has difficulty making decisions! We chose the asparagus with hollandaise sauce on a light brioche and smoked salmon with beetroot. This was followed by a rich Coq au Vin on creamy mashed potato, and Fisherman’s Pie topped with

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 32

cheese (knowing I was definitely going to have dessert, I had to leave some of the velvety mash - it was a substantial portion!). The pie’s flavour was subtle and packed with salmon. Knowing Victoria’s reputation for baking, dessert was a must! Although there is a constant choice on the menu, there are new delights baked fresh every day. We were lucky enough to hit on a day when these included a superb Walnut Tart and an unbelievable Cherry and Almond Cake – just imagine homemade marzipan grated into the sponge. It has been calling me back ever since! 2 Oxford Place is open from 11am every day (except Monday). It serves brunch with all kinds of eggs and pancakes, lunches with sharing boards, quiches, risotto, pastas and salads, as well and sandwiches. And, always cake! Victoria also serves Very

Steve Lovell had always admired the design of the London Underground map. He also enjoyed going out in Leeds – so he decided to combine the two and create a map of the pubs around Leeds in the style of the London Underground map and ‘Leeds Orderaround’ was born! He spent a lot of time researching and figuring out how to suitably distort the different areas and routes within Leeds but still make it all fit together in a way that worked. Checking the location of places and whether or not they were open or closed and so on was done through a combination of various online maps and directories, Google

Street View and many driving and walking trips. The map, now in its third edition, currently features 568 places. “I can’t say I’ve been to all of the places on the map and probably never will”, said Steve. “But I’ve been to lots of places I didn’t know about before as a result of researching and designing this. Removing places that had closed down for this third edition was sad, but it was great to see how many new places had opened up too.” The ‘Leeds Orderaround’ map costs just £13 (including personal delivery in the Leeds area) via www. albanydesign.co.uk.

Leeds North Foodbank Opens in Horsforth Leeds North Foodbank at Lister Hill Baptist Church, 1 Brownberrie Avenue Horsforth, recently started providing emergency food to people in Horsforth and the surrounding areas. A team of Church leaders and volunteers recognised a need locally and opened the outlet. The aim is to give three days’ emergency food to people in crisis. Since launching its first outlet in Moortown last September, Leeds North Foodbank has fed 1,678 people. Vouchers for food are available from a range of places, including health and children’s centres, via the Welfare Rights team and CAB. As well as providing food, volunteers will be able to suggest where further help and support is available, and everyone is welcome.

News From Your Councillors CLLR DANIEL COHEN

Alwoodley Ward The glum look on the faces of children in the street, tells us that September is here and it’s back to school time (interestingly parents seem to be especially jubilant!). Not wanting to sound repetitive, but I do want to take this opportunity to make an annual plea. Firstly to parents

Obstacle one has been overcome

CLLR BILL URRY

Roundhay Ward Begging Nobody likes being asked for money on the street. We may want to help - we know that Welfare Benefits are ever harder to obtain, so where else can this person turn? How will a well meant donation be used? A recent injunction was granted against begging in parts of Leeds. So what is going on? There is real need - I wrote before about searching at night for rough sleepers. Leeds has a policy of no second night out, and the local statutory and voluntary services work hard to find people on the street, and to deliver safe accommodation, food, and clothing. This unseen work saves and restores lives, and personal donations of food, money and clothing to the different agencies are well used.

dropping their children off at school, please remember to park with consideration for local residents. It is never acceptable to block someone else’s drive and this is one of the biggest gripes I have from those living near schools. To long-suffering neighbours of schools, my annual plea for patience. Most parents go to the ends of the earth to be considerate about where they park It is not fair to blame them for the minority who do not show such regard. One great legacy of the Tour de France could of course be more children cycling to school – though I’m not sure how well that would go down in the Cohen household on wet and rainy winter mornings! On the subject of the Cohen household, we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our latest baby due early September. If therefore I am a little slower

at replying to emails in the next few weeks (or you see me wandering around Alwoodley looking half asleep) you will I hope understand and bear with me. Finally, some really great news. It seems obstacle one, in the development of our New Health Centre, has been overcome and the Council has formally agreed terms for the proposed site on King Lane (with some gentle nudging from your Ward Councillors). As promised, Neil, Peter and I will keep pushing to ensure this much needed health centre is built as quickly as possible and I will of course keep you updated with developments. As always if you have any problems or issues, we’re here to help.

But experienced workers say that homeless people rarely beg, and that beggars are rarely homeless. So giving to beggars may simply take money from those in most need. It is much better to give money, food and clothes through a charity or food bank or to a badged Big Issue seller. If you want to help directly, Saint George’s Crypt sell vouchers for £1 which can be given to beggars to exchange for food, accommodation and support at the Crypt or Trinity Church. These are available through many organisations and churches. If a voucher is not used, the Crypt still receives the £1 to spend on its other work. But if it is, the material help in food, clothing and accommodation is worth much more than £1. A voucher for support at

Saint George’s Crypt, or a meal at Trinity really can start to change lives, and you have the guarantee it will be well used. If it is not wanted, ask yourself why?

Have a great month! Daniel.cohen@leeds.gov.uk 0113 204 1094

Unemployment Tops Agenda for New Committee Tackling unemployment, health inequality and promoting apprenticeships were some of the top priorities agreed at the first meeting of the new local Inner North East Community Committee (covering Chapel Allerton, Moortown and Roundhay Wards) chaired by Councillor Sharon Hamilton. Pictured: (Front) Cllrs Taylor, Dowson, Hamilton, Charlwood. (Back) Cllrs Sobel, Urry, Rafique, Hussain and Macniven

A Name in Time Earlier this year, Oakwood Traders and Residents’ Association’s application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for help to restore the Oakwood Clock was successful and work will begin soon. To show the restored clock off to best advantage, local residents felt that the area around the clock should also be improved – so a new campaign ‘A Name in Time’ was launched at the recent Clock Rock event.

he meeting, attended by local Councillors and up to 50 people, discussed the priorities that the Committee should address over the next year, including tackling high levels of unemployment on particular estates, improving health and wellbeing in disadvantaged communities and ensuring that a greater number of young people take up apprenticeship opportunities. The Committee approved a raft of funding measures totalling almost £37,000, including money for Potternewton Park, the Leeds West Indian Carnival and Scotthall Sharks Community Athletics Club.

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 38

The meeting discussed the priorities that the Committee should address over the next year

Councillors also agreed to appoint additional members, drawn from local residents, community groups, schools and businesses in the area, in order to ensure the views of as many people as possible were considered. Councillor Hamilton was delighted with the progress made at the first meeting and encourages the local community to get involved and go along to future meetings, the next being scheduled for October. Details of forthcoming meetings can be found at http://democracy. leeds.gov.uk/ or contact the Area Support Team on 0113 336 7638

This new initiative will allow people to have inscriptions engraved on the paving stones around the clock. These could be in commemoration of a loved one or a special event. The number of inscribed stones will be limited to 500 and the restored clock and revitalised space around it will be unveiled by the Lord Mayor on Oakwood Day 2015 (Saturday 2nd May). This is a unique opportunity, so anyone interested is advised to be quick off the mark! Further details can be found at https://mydonate. bt.com/events/nameintime

A New Way of Seeing at MAECare The Mind and Body Project at MAECare aims to improve the mental health and emotional wellbeing of people over 60 in Moor Allerton, Alwoodley and Shadwell. Thanks to a generous grant from the Big Lottery Fund, they were able to explore a number of approaches, one of which was a photography workshop with photographer Lizzie Combes. She wanted to give people the opportunity not only to learn the basics of digital photography, but also to see how photography can change the way we see the world and ourselves. Ten members with varying levels of fitness and mobility (some suffering from anxiety and depression) signed up, all ready to try something new. Lizzie suggested including local poet and musician Peter Spafford and expanding it into a ‘Poem Portrait’ project. Peter met with everyone individually to craft a poem about themselves, whilst also encouraging them to do their own writing. Lizzie turned the meeting room at Moor Allerton Library into a portrait studio and spent one session taking photographs of everyone. The initial selfconsciousness soon melted away and the result has been the creation of beautiful Poem Portraits, which will be displayed as part of the annual Love Arts Festival in October, organised by the Leeds NHS Trust, which aims to get people thinking and talking about mental health and believes the arts are a fantastic vehicle to explore these complex issues. At the end of the project, everyone reflected on what had

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 40

happened – they thought it was going to be about their cameras, it turned out to be about them! The process opened their eyes to new experiences, new friendships, and new ways to think about who they are. Everyone wanted to keep exploring this new lens on the world. White Cloth Gallery will display the Poem Portraits, along with work by each of the participants, from 24th September – 1st November.

Anyone who has a story to tell, or who knows someone with a story, should contact Edna Murray at tomandedna@icloud.com. They will be interviewed and their reminiscences recorded for posterity. The project is interested in reminiscences on all aspects of Oakwood, but would be particularly interested to hear from people with memories of the Blackburn aircraft factory, and of the Second World War and the period after the War. https://mydonate.bt.com/ events/nameintime

Oakwood’s Oldest Resident Raises Over £400! Jack Barstow, aged 101 and an accomplished artist, painted a lovely picture of the Oakwood Clock and decided to sell prints of it in aid of the Oakwood Clock Restoration Fund. He recently presented OTRA with a cheque for £440! Jack lived in Oakwood for over 70 years and the Oakwood Oral History Project was quick to pick his brains on his experiences in the area. Jack recently moved to Grove Lane Residential Care Home in Headingley.

It will also enable us to subsidise more events and social evenings for our members. The Friends of Wigton Moor Woods are celebrating after receiving over £1,600 from the Co-operative Membership Community Fund for their project to improve woodland and green space between the High Ash/Plantations and Shadwell Lane. A representative from the Co-operative Membership Community Fund, Jean Martin, commented that the Friends were one of just a few groups to be awarded the full amount requested, as the project benefited the community close to the local Co-operative branch. The selection panel was impressed that the group was doing so much without outside support. “One of our aims is to encourage people to use this community green space more”, said a spokeswoman for the group. “We hope that by siting picnic benches close to the playground we will encourage more people to make use of the playground facilities and arrange picnics and other outdoor family activities in the park.” The group has also arranged with the Council to extend the pathway through the woods and hopes

to encourage people to walk to the school and other amenities in the area, thereby alleviating some of the parking issues. Benches will be sited along the route so people can relax and appreciate the natural green space on their doorstep. The group’s chairwoman thanked the Co-operative and everyone involved in the making the application. The grant will be used to purchase the benches and, with the help of the Council, it hopes to have them in place before the end of the Summer. If you are interested in joining Friends of Wigton Moor Woods, please contact Debbie on 07943 277867, email them on wigtonwoods17@gmail.com, or check their facebook page for details of activities e.g. Batwalk 31st August.

Moortown Community Group Annual Open Meeting Nearly 100 local residents, MCG committee members and volunteers, and the Moortown Ward Councillors (Cllrs Charlwood, Hamilton & Sobel) attended the Annual Open Meeting at the Queen’s Hall in July. One of the main items was the proposed Moortown Park. The general feeling was one of support. Up until recently concerns had been expressed by parents and staff of Moortown Primary School about the loss of outdoor play area. This has now been resolved and the developer is to gift a plot of

land to the school. The concerns of nearby residents about obstructive parking were allayed when Cllr. Sobel indicated that if it became a problem, it would be possible to introduce residents-only parking. The Casino building at Moortown Corner is to become apartments and a Morrison’s Local. There will be 42 parking spaces for residents and shoppers. Parking at Moortown Corner, where the forecourts are all privately owned, has been of concern to MCG

for a long time. Cllr. Hamilton has been in touch with ten of the owners and is hoping to resolve the issue. A local information board is to be erected on Moortown Parade and Cllr. Sobel informed the meeting that the stone for ‘Welcome To Moortown’ signs has been ordered. Potential projects for the coming year include improvements to Moortown Corner and Stainburn Parade, compiling a list of buildings of heritage interest, a Farmers’ Market and the Friends of Moortown Park. If any local residents wish to join the new Friends of Moortown Park group, please contact Jon Pedlar. MCG welcomes comments and suggestions – please contact 0113 266 8480, moortowncommunitygroup@ hotmail.co.uk, or via www. moortowncommunitygroup.co.uk

CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence

If you struggle to get yourself out of bed in the morning, or just can’t fasten your shoelaces as easily as you used to, it doesn’t mean you need some form of residential care – perhaps all you need is a helping hand in your own home. Sometimes a little bit of help can dramatically improve your quality of life and enable you to maintain your independence and continue to enjoy living in the comfort of your own home. Bluebird Care is available to any adult who needs specific help with everyday tasks around the home. These may include help getting in and out of bed or getting dressed, preparing meals, shopping, washing and ironing, personal hygiene, cleaning, helping with mobility issues and accompanying to appointments or to see friends or relatives. Bluebird Care normally involves one or more visits a day for relatively short periods, possibly up to an hour, to help with everyday tasks. Longer visits are also available, including overnight help or even live-in care. “People are looking for the best quality care for themselves or their loved ones but they need to know they are getting value for money”, said David Brown, Director of Bluebird Care in North Leeds. “At Bluebird Care we provide what people want and carefully measure the way we deliver care. We train, monitor and supervise our staff closely and effectively, and ensure that all staff members have the right temperament and attitude. We will only deliver care at the level we would expect for our own relatives. That way we know we have got it right!” Quality Care should be all about maintaining people’s independence and confidence, not taking it away. “Everyone is unique, and our care packages are tailored to suit each person’s specific requirements, promoting independence and ensuring dignity and respect for the individual”, said David. Bluebird Care’s helping hand enables people to continue to appreciate life, without having to struggle with those little things.

When it comes to local publications you can’t beat North Leeds Life for quality, readership and content. A magazine to be proud of. Rachel Poole, Head of Sales & Marketing, Leeds Grand Theatre

Clock, Rock and Two Empty Barrels rocked the Oakwood Clock again on 2nd August. Dreamt up by some local residents last year to help to rescue the Oakwood Clock, it returned by popular demand. Stalls brimmed with great street food and a wide variety of products, from stain glass to baby clothes, petal art to music orientated gifts. And, Preston’s Super Bar was drunk dry by thirsty patrons who queued up to try the 13 local beers from Ilkley, Kirkstall, and Great Heck Breweries. Local bands, including The Casinos, African Passport, Moonshine Five, and Roundhay Ukulele Band, played to a packed audience in between rain showers.

Up and coming musicians Jack Haining and Peter Stagg delighted the audience, and Palace Lights, Issimo, The Kamuls and headliners Skinny Living, entertained the audience with powerful songs. The event was organised by OTRA (Oakwood Trader’s Residents Association), local residents, Leeds City Council, Tasty and Preston Bar and was funded through grants from local councillors and the Leeds City Council Inner East North East Committee team. This year OTRA raised a fantastic £3,200 for the Oakwood Clock restoration fund and to help fund future community events in Oakwood. For further information, visit www.loveoakwood.co.uk

Pictured: Das Pain

Tom Attah, a strong, soulful performer will play original songs inspired by the music of the old deep South. Patrick Duff, best known as the singer from Strangelove, will present disarmingly honest, dark folk songs. And Das Pain, who have been described as ‘lurching rock ‘n’ roll that takes in the rainy, booze-soaked atmosphere of Crime & the City Solution and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’, will present ‘songs of indefinable yearning’. Their new single - Joyride / Haunted Heart - comes out on vinyl in October. Saturday 6th September Left Bank Leeds, Cardigan Road, Leeds LS6 1LJ Doors 7pm. £5 / £4

action

Since the release of Iron Man, the now seemingly unstoppable powerhouse Marvel Studios has realised that, when it comes to comic book movie adaptations, brand awareness for the audience isn’t as important as you might have thought and the stratospheric box office performance of their cinematic outing for little known title Guardians of the Galaxy appears to bear this out. This lurid and frenetic sci-fi extravaganza gleefully bucks the trend of gloomy, earthbound post-apocalyptic dystopia that has been par for the science fiction course for the last decade or so. Guardians of the Galaxy marks the return of the ‘space opera’ end of the genre, characterised by multiple planets, spaceship battles and freaky exotic aliens, the gold standard benchmark of which is, of course, the original Star Wars trilogy (the less said about the prequels the better), and JJ Abrams, who is currently reviving that franchise, would do well to take note. Yes, it’s a Marvel comic book movie, it’s a loud, action packed, SFX laden spectacle and it’s utterly ridiculous. It’s also tremendous fun if you’re willing to hang up your higher critical faculties and enter into the spirit of the thing. The film revolves around

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 56

a merry band of misfits led by Peter Quill aka Starlord (Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt, an endearing comic actor now recast in the buffed up action hero mould), a swashbuckling, treasure hunting outlaw who’s an amalgamation of Han Solo

packed, utterly ridiculous and tremendous fun

and Indiana Jones. We first meet Quill on earth in 1988 where, moments after the death of his mother (a surprisingly dour and macabre opening to this day-glo, knockabout feature) he is abducted (by aliens, of course) and spirited away to the far reaches of the galaxy. Flash forward and the adult Quill gets his hands on some kind of mystical orb containing an infinity stone (or something) capable of destroying whole worlds and much sought after by evil galactic baddie (and apparently goth-rock band member), Ronan. The procurement of this prized trinket lands Quill/ Starlord in hot water and thrusts him into the company of the other “Guardians”. There’s Gamora, a kick-ass assassin (Zoe Saldana here swapping her blue complexion of Avatar for a green skin tone), musclebound, literal-minded Drax the Destroyer (WWE wrestler Dave Bautista) whose inability to grasp metaphor makes for an amusing running gag and, best of all, Rocket, a wise-cracking, gun-toting racoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) accompanied

15/08/2014 17:20

by his lumbering sidekick, Groot (Vin Diesel) a verbally limited humanoid tree creature. Look, I told you it’s ridiculous. With another more po-faced sci-fi feature the labouring of plot points (which sound like complete gibberish) would quickly become exasperating. Luckily in this case the filmmakers seem to have as little patience for the particulars of the storyline as we do. Every now and then there’s some perfunctory blather about whatever the hell’s going on before swiftly launching into the next comedic scene or action set piece. Director, James Gunn handles both the slapstick laughs and the ray-gun zapping and fisticuffs with aplomb and while the film is inevitably CGI heavy it manages to avoid having the numbing effect of bludgeoning one insensible with pixels, as

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 57

is the case with Michael Bay’s god-awful Transformers movies. It’s probably impossible for a movie featuring a talking racoon and Vin Diesel as a tree to take itself at all seriously and so Guardians of the Galaxy wholeheartedly embraces its absurdity and runs riot with it. It also boasts some eye-popping art direction with alien planet landscapes that look like a Yes album cover come to life and the hair/makeup and wardrobe departments seem to have a field day. Benefitting from the likable charm of its central cast, a killer retro soundtrack and smart pop culture references l i b e r a l l y p e p p e r e d throughout, GATG bounces along with enough wit and verve to distinguish it from the glut of other brash summer blockbuster fare and is absurdly, mindlessly enjoyable on its own terms.

Ocean Film Festival at The Carriageworks

The International Ocean Film Festival is set to make a splash at The Carriageworks on 24th September. The festival, which originated in Australia, will feature a selection of the world’s most captivating ocean-themed short films and will be shown in 14 towns and cities across the UK. It will showcase over two hours of sublime footage taken above and below the water’s surface. The films document the beauty and power of the ocean, and celebrate the divers, surfers, swimmers and oceanographers who live for the sea’s salt spray; who chase the crests of waves; and who marvel at the mysteries of the big blue.

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 58

Heart-stopping shots of surfers riding wild waves and adrenalin-inducing scenes of divers swimming with white sharks will leave you on the edges of your seat. The festival is also full of touching interviews and insightful narrations from characters whose lives are inspired by the ocean. The 2014 highlights include: ‘And Then We Swam’ - an incredible story of adventure, foolhardiness and survival as two friends set out to row across the Indian Ocean with no rowing experience and no support boat.

‘Duct Tape Surfing’ - Pascale Honore, who is paralysed from the waist down, was fascinated by the ocean and dreamed of being able to surf. With the help of a roll of duct tape her dream eventually becomes reality. ‘Sportlife Saga: Water’: World champion free-diver Guillaume Néry transforms the sport of free-diving into an art, reaching depths of more than 100m For tickets and information, visit www.oceanfilmfestival.co.uk Pictured- Diver, Guillaume Néry Photo- Julie Gautier

More than 400 people will take part in the 2014 Starlight Hike in aid of Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley. The event on 27th September is open to everyone (and their dogs!) and aims to raise £30,000 towards the cost of running the hospice. The walk sets off at 10pm and follows a 10K marshalled route of landscaped gardens and parkland at Temple Newsam, parts of which are lit with a multitude of lights, and participants are asked to raise as much sponsorship as possible. Paul and Becca Swinfen took part in the Leeds Starlight Hike last year in memory of Becca’s grandfather, Roy, who developed a terminal brain tumour and opted for palliative care at home in Horsforth. The Wheatfields community nursing team supported Roy throughout his illness, providing not only superb care for Roy, but also respite care for his wife Barbara and the family. They raised over £600, which would cover the cost of a nurse in the community for four days. “Taking part in the Starlight Hike was a great way to raise funds and say thank you to the community nurses at Wheatfields”, said Paul. “The level of support Roy received was outstanding. We would definitely encourage others to get involved. It was a fantastic experience walking under the stars through the grounds of Temple Newsam, and a perfect opportunity to take part in a sporting event knowing that we had helped raise money for this worthwhile cause.”

The Hospice provides care for people with incurable illnesses. Many of those taking part in the walk do so because someone they knew was cared for at Wheatfields. Others take part just for the fun of it. It’s thanks to the thousands of people across Leeds who care and take part in events like this that much needed money is raised to help Wheatfields carry out its vital work. The event opens at 8.30pm with entertainment. The walk gets underway at 10pm and ends around midnight with a hot butty and a goodie bag! To register, visit www.sueryder. org/StarlightHike

Moor Allerton Golf Club Ladies Support Mencap Moor Allerton’s Lady Captain, Lyn Fromant, added a charitable twist to her Lady Captain’s Day this year. The format was specifically altered to allow the members to contribute to Leeds Mencap. Mary Martin was the overall winner, coming in with a very respectable net 73. This was followed by some entertaining chipping and putting competitions, a cocktail reception, high tea and prize giving presentation. The day raised over £300 for the charity. “I’d like to thank Moor Allerton Golf Club and Lyn Fromant for organising such a hugely successful day”, said Cath Lee, Leeds Mencap CEO. “We very much appreciate the fundraising support of Moor Allerton Golf Club’s Ladies’ Section, which will allow us to continue supporting families and individuals with learning disabilities.” Anyone wishing to organise similar events or support Leeds Mencap in any way, should contact the fundraising team on 0113 235 1331 or catherine. storey@leedsmencap.org.uk, or visit www.leedsmencap.org.uk

Over the last two years, Leeds College of Chinese Physical Culture participated in an EU Lifelong Learning project funded by Grundtvig. This was a partnership project between France, the Netherlands and Germany to deliver and promote good practice in the traditional Chinese art of Lishi, a form of Tai Chi, Chi Gong and Taoist Yoga. Lishi teachers took part in intensive courses, enhancing the quality of training and stimulating them so as to encourage more people to experience the benefits of this traditional Chinese art. “It has been a wonderful experience to work with our European partners”, said John Garland, senior Lishi instructor who attended several of the courses in Germany. “The challenges we face are very similar, especially in terms of promoting a very physical culture in the digital era. We are

now working together to deliver online Lishi classes, which is really exciting.” The participating organisations were: The College of Chinese Physical Culture, UK, The Foundation for Traditional Chinese Movement Arts, Netherlands, The Association de Gymnastique Chinoise de Lyon, France, and Lishi Germany. ‘Lishi International’ has been established as an umbrella organisation. The partners all use traditional Chinese performing arts to help adults acquire knowledge and skills which help them take responsibility for their own lives. It promotes a healthier lifestyle, a healthy and supple body, selfconfidence, social and practical skills such as managing teams

and resolving conflicts. The joint project had three main objectives: the exchange of training methods, enhancing the quality of teachers, and increasing the number of people practicing traditional Chinese performing arts. For further information, visit www.lishi.org

The Leeds Softball Association’s (LSA) annual Softball Tournament was held the end of June at Grange Park Sports Club, Wetherby. Around 250 players, umpires and tournament organisers from around the country attended, and 20 mixed teams slugged it out across six full softball diamonds, specially marked out for the occasion.

Pictured: Leeds Lighting Team The first stage saw a round robin where all the teams faced off against other teams in their respective groups. In the Competition division, there were teams representing Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester; and teams from as far away as Liverpool, Nottingham, Manchester and London in the Recreation division. It took months of careful planning to ensure the tournament’s success. An Executive Committee of around 12 volunteers worked tirelessly booking entertainment and catering, marking pitches, recording scores and organising match fixtures. At the top level B-comp division, Leeds Terriers endured some tough fixtures but successfully defended the previous year’s coveted Cup. Larry Chan, Terriers Captain, said: “Last year was obviously a big win for Leeds, as none of the Terriers ever remembered a Leeds team winning our own tournament in as long as any of us had played. To be able

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 68

to defend our title, especially coming back from three disappointing one-run losses, felt amazing and was a testament to the resolve of our players.” This season, Leeds Terriers have already chalked up wins at East Midlands Firstball and the British Airways Plate competition. Also representing the city was Leeds Lighting, who recently made it to the finals of four separate softball tournaments, claiming silverware twice. Leeds Softball Association membership consists of over 300 men and women actively playing and representing a dozen teams in the league. Matches are currently played at Roundhay Park (off Princess Avenue) usually on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Along with local fixtures, the organisation regularly sends teams around the country to compete in weekend tournaments. How Does Cinema Deal with Age? Researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University are recruiting over-60s to give their views on how age is portrayed in cinema and to make their own short films. Jennifer Granville and Ann Tobin of the Northern Film School, and Dr Mark Robinson of the School of Health and Wellbeing, recently received funding for a programme entitled CINAGE, to explore the EU’s recommendations for healthy, active ageing and see whether the needs and concerns of older people are reflected in contemporary cinema. A focus group was invited to watch a range of European movies and discuss how the problems of aging are addressed through film. They are now recruiting volunteers to take part in filmmaking workshops, culminating in the production of a series of short films, to be screened at a festival next July. Volunteers must be able to commit to the whole series of workshops and classes. Researchers will use films made in the UK, Portugal, Italy and Slovenia as part of an information pack for those working with older people, to show how to engage people in learning for active ageing through film. Delighted with his progress, Paul wanted others with similar problems to benefit from his experience. With this in mind, he has organised a choral concert and hopes to raise significant funds, which will go towards promoting singing as a recognised therapy. The concert will feature The Fairfax Singers, a much loved local mixed choir, and White Rose Barbershop, a local male voice chorus (Paul sings bass in

The programme will include a mixture of modern and classical songs, including many popular favorites. This promises to be a fine musical evening, ending with the two choirs performing together in a presentation of ‘Finlandia’ (This is my song). The concert will take place on Saturday 4th October at the Queens Hall, Burley in Wharfedale. Doors open at 6pm and a bar will be open before,

Who would imagine a sporting competition where you needed to be over 90 years old to enter? Jack Barstow of North Leeds Bowling Club had just this idea and in 2005, bowlers from Leeds who were over 90 years old competed together for the first time on Jack’s home ground. Sunday 2nd August saw the 10th anniversary of this event. A capacity crowd of over a hundred gathered around the green. There were ten competitors from clubs around Leeds, three women and seven men. One was already one hundred and another due to celebrate her hundredth birthday this year. The first round was a ‘round robin’ where everyone plays everyone else in their group. After

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 71

this there was a rush to the clubhouse for sandwiches and homemade cakes. Then it was back to the green for the semi-final and final. The players all competed with strength, skill, determination and not a little cunning. Those who reached the final had been on the green for over three hours. As the MC for the day said: “I can’t wait to be ninety to be able to bowl like that.”

Congratulations to all the competitors and especially the runner up, Dorothy Carey and winner, Ron Jackson. Jack Barstow who had the original idea, has now retired from bowling at 101, but he was there to present the trophy. Prizes were generously donated by Bluebird care, who have sponsored the event for four years and were awarded by David Brown. If you want to enjoy a sport into your nineties and beyond, or simply watch in lovely surroundings, and enjoy regular social events, get in touch with Trevor at North Leeds Bowling Club on 0113 267 1071, trevmar32@ aol.co.uk, or Frances on 0113 269 0978, francesdada6@gmail.com Club membership is £35pa for players/ £10pa for social membership.

Self Storage Can Provide Many Solutions When you think of using self storage it is usually to free up some room in your house, store sports equipment, a place for granny’s furniture – but you’d be surprised by what some people are using it for! We have heard of bands using it for rehearsal space, artists storing their precious paintings, and people using it as an essential business space. With 24-hour access and security, and endless flexibility, it is the solution for a huge variety of people. Jane Whitmore, Director at Bikes4fun, has been a keen off roader for many years and has put that expertise to good use. She now sources bikes from as far afield as China! As her business grew, Jane needed to find somewhere to store her bikes. She wanted somewhere flexible that would allow her to expand or contract space as required, and save her money in the process – why pay for a large space that she probably would only fully utilise at Christmas? “Self storage is the perfect solution to ever moving stock levels”, said Jane. “It allows us to cut the storage down instantly as the stock sells and reserve more space when a shipment is imminent. The extensive security in and around the premises is also a great comfort. I also really appreciate the 24-hour access and the friendly, efficient service provided by Darrell and his team at Kirkstall Road.” Bikes4fun uses Ready Steady Store’s Receipt & Dispatch service, which means that stock can be delivered to store and held in a secure unit, until Jane can get

SEPTEMBER2014 Area B.indd 72

down to put them in her own unit. This means she is free to get on with business rather than hang around waiting for couriers. When DJ, magician and balloon modeller Daniel Dancer needed space to store his equipment, he went to Ready Steady Store on Roseville Road. He has had a small storage unit there since 2008. With the 24-hour access and the service he receives from the store team, it was an easy choice and great value! Dan is in high demand for charity events, weddings and parties and is the only DJ in Leeds to have been on Britain’s Got Talent! Originally he looked at renting a warehouse, but this was costly and gave him little flexibility. Choosing Ready Steady Store meant there was no long-term commitment, and he only pays for the space he needs at any one time. Usually this is a very small unit, but when gigs require extra equipment he can rent an extra unit or move to a larger one. As an entertainer Dan is usually working at night, so the 24-hour access and

Self storage is the perfect solution

the option to have things delivered and held securely for him while he catches up on some well earned rest is invaluable. Find out all about him on Facebook or call him on 07887 566905.

This was not only an historic occasion for the Jewish community, but also a significant new development for Leeds, not least because of the unique partnership it has with the Rodillian Academy in Wakefield, which provides all the secular teaching.

We had high expectations and all the pupils have exceeded them

“As an educational establishment we are extremely proud of our performance in the first year, in terms of the academic progress and the amount of social interaction”, said head teacher Jeremy Dunford. “We had high expectations and all the pupils have exceeded them. Their academic progress shows they have made two or more years progress in one year.” The LJFS teaching facilities provide access to first class shared learning environments with Brodetsky Primary School. The

new buildings offer a series of linked open learning spaces, mixed with specialist teaching areas including food technology, material technology, science and performing arts. Having the two educational establishments together is proving a huge advantage. The whole campus offers a package similar to facilities found in the independent sector. Pupils at Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School are stock market champions! The school beat 18 other teams from schools across West Yorkshire as they traded shares and cash with the aim of making the most money in simulated stock market trading. The team of five 14 year olds – Sally Greaney, Joseph Fahy, Frances Grindrod, Lauren Hamilton and Sam Morris – was taking part in ‘Stock Market Challenge’, a business and enterprise event run by Leeds Metropolitan University and educational publisher 10 Lane Learning. The organisers praised the Cardinal Heenan team for its well-researched, but risky strategy, which involved buying a large number of shares in one company towards the end of the competition. Sally Greaney was awarded special commendation for her work as media analyst, which influenced her team’s decisions to buy and sell shares. “Our pupils enjoyed the excitement of a live trading floor”, said Business Teacher, Luke Matterson. “They made decisions under pressure and took calculated risks. Year 8 pupils Jenni Greenfield, Nikita Bharath and Laura Memmott designed ‘Phoebe R’ (the planning, helping, organising, excellent, best ever robot!) which will get you organised – from waking you in the morning, to reminding you to do your homework. From around 1,000 entries, 50 were shortlisted and their creators invited to the awards ceremony at Harper Adams. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Paul Mullen feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Paul is

finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BUSINESS APP

If you have a problem we can help!

Do you Spend Hours Quoting for Work? ...I run a small business and I was looking for an App that I could do an instant quote on while with my customer. I wanted to put together a quote for a finished product using different elements and services. (for me this is Design, Paper and Printing, but for you this might be Planning, Bricks & Labour)

There was nothing online or in the App store that did what I wanted, so I made Quick Quote. The app is suitable for all businesses that sell bespoke products and or services. Please take a look at: www.quickquoteapp.co.uk
