Gemma Kennelly, a Leeds College of Art Textiles and Surface Pattern Design student, took one of the top awards at this year’s New Designers (ND) show in London in June – the exhibition for emerging design. emma competed for one of twelve awards alongside 3,000 other promising design graduates, showcasing her work to an audience of over 18,000 visitors. Gemma, who has just completed her BA (Hons) degree in Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design, won the Wilko and W’Innovate Award for Innovation, a cash prize of £1,000, and a two week placement with W’Innovate (Wilko’s design development company). Her winning collection, entitled Garden Blooms, featured small ranges with ditsy florals, floral splash, garden blooms and secret gardens applied to greetings cards, giftware and stationary using mixed processes. “We chose Gemma for the breadth of portfolio and diversity of products it could be applied to”, said the judges. “She demonstrates a fresh and commercial approach.” “We bring our students to New Designers each year so they can build industry connections and showcase their work”, said Duncan Harrison, Programme Leader. “This is the third year one of our students has won the Wilko and W’Innovate Award for Innovation, and the tenth ND award in the last five years.”

SIR THOMAS CLIFFORD ALLBUTT (1836-1925) PHYSICIAN AND SCHOLAR
After visiting Leeds in 1868, the novelist George Eliot found consolation in her host and friend Clifford Allbutt: ‘a good, clever, graceful man, enough to enable one to be cheerful under the horrible smoke of ugly Leeds’. For 20 years he was Leeds’ most distinguished physician, serving at the Infirmary, teaching at the School of Medicine, running an extensive private practice, writing books and papers, and leading the field in developing new treatments and theories. One of his lasting achievements was the invention of the short clinical thermometer, still used today – the previous model was 10 inches long and took 20 minutes to register! homas Clifford Allbutt was born

Leeds Libraries recently launched a campaign to raise awareness of its varied services. #whatsyourstory is based upon real life studies of Leeds residents who have achieved something out of the ordinary after using the library services.
Sunday School Tea Rooms The Sunday School Tea Rooms, based at the Oxford Place Centre on Oxford Place, LS1, is run by the charity No Going Back, which offers free legal advice to vulnerable asylum seekers.
Pictured: Ma Maposa
t aims to raise awareness of both online and offline materials, activities and events that can be accessed free by adults in Leeds, and documents the ways in which the services empower the community. Leeds Libraries position themselves as ‘21st century libraries’, with an online app facility that allows users to access the library catalogues, and over 5,000 e-books. With services and activities from IT help and writing workshops, to intimate author meetings, Leeds Libraries have touched many lives. Two that are featured in the campaign are Ma Maposa from Harehills who started to build himself a successful future in music after discovering Studio12, a free production studio that is part of Leeds Libraries; and Wayne Levitt from Belle Isle who learned basic computer skills which allowed him to access the Local and Family History library and trace his family back to 1803.
No dream is too big, it’s just about finding the best way to achieve that dream “Ten years ago, I never would have imagined that I’d be where I am now”, said Ma Maposa. “No dream is too big, it’s just about finding the best way to achieve that dream – for me, this was down to the help of Leeds Libraries and Studio12. They changed my life.” Has your life been changed for the better as a result of the services available from Leeds Libraries? If so, they would like to hear from you. Contact them via Twitter -@leedslibraries/ Facebook – leedslibraries, using the hashtag #whatsyourstory or email whatsyourstory@leeds.gov.uk
The aim is to give clients hope and to improve their skills for future work in this country or in their home country, should they be returned there. You know when you’re invited to friend’s home for the first time, you walk through the door and you think wow! It also strikes you that this could only be this particular person’s home because it oozes their charm, and personality. e had such an experience when we visited a welltravelled friend in Chapel Allerton. She had styled her home in such a uniquely characterful and eclectic way. It brimmed with self confidence. We were so impressed we decided to dedicate this month’s feature to her interior style schtick! Vanessa travelled to Kenya in her twenties and was inspired by the vibrant colours and sounds of African textiles and music. She worked in journalism for years, writing about film and world music and continued travelling. All of this influenced her style. There is almost a freestyle jazz feel about it, evoking freedom not chaos. By mixing styles, eras, genres, and even art from different hemispheres, she has achieved what the more self conscious of us only aspire to. On paper, a richly patterned 70’s G Plan Aztec patterned velvet sofa shouldn’t work with a traditional Persian carpet but Vanessa pulls it off, and it’s not a fluke! Even her pragmatic solutions to storage, such
as using a grand French armoire as a filing cabinet, have her stamp on them. She acquired a 70’s Rockola jukebox to house her extensive 7” vinyl collection: hey-presto an elegant, simple and creative storage solution that looks amazing and is great fun for guests. Like us, Vanessa is an advocate of the idea of collecting beautiful and interesting items on one’s travels. No instant gratification here. For example the vintage lilac and white vinyl chairs she bought from a Brussels’ brocante market, now sit around her farmhouse dining table with an interesting mix of other styles of chairs she has collected. And a love of art means that the huge walls of the Georgian townhouse in Chapel A are full of original paintings, many by local artists and friends. Vanessa’s home is a fabulous example of how ditching fashions and trends, and instead filling your house with pieces that you love, being bold with colour and pattern, and giving personal mementos pride of place, creates a home that has real heart and soul.

Northern Ballet will present the world première of Jonathan Watkins’ 1984 at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from 5 – 12 September. his is the first full length ballet adaptation of George Orwell’s renowned novel. Choreographed by Jonathan Watkins, the production is set to an original score by Tony nominated composer and arranger Alex Baranowski, who recently worked with Mercury Prize winning band The XX, and will be performed by the 30 piece Northern Ballet Sinfonia conducted by John Pryce-Jones. “Jonathan is an exciting choreographic talent and I am delighted that he accepted my invitation to create 1984 with us”, said David Nixon, Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director. “This production promises to challenge the idea of what stories can be told through dance and the dramatic talent of our dancers will draw the audience into the very core of this literary masterpiece.”

The story follows Ministry of Truth worker Winston Smith, who lives in a world of absolute conformity, his every action scrutinised by Big Brother. Whilst outwardly conforming to Party doctrine, he is secretly disillusioned, illegally documenting his thoughts in a diary. Then one day he receives a love note from Julia, a colleague he suspected of spying on him for the Thought Police and the pair start an illicit affair. As their romance develops and they prepare for an act of political rebellion, they discover that Big Brother is always watching and no one can be trusted; least of all themselves. “George Orwell’s 1984 has been a constant inspiration to
me since I first read it at 15”, said Jonathan Watkins. “It’s a powerful and thought provoking allegory that resonates now more than ever. “I am excited to be working with Northern Ballet and a wonderful creative team to realise this new ballet and I look forward to exploring a new way of seeing this modern classic through dance, music and film.” Tickets for 1984 can be booked online at wyp.org.uk or by calling the box office on 0113 213 7700
The National Coal Mining Museum for England’s summer exhibition – The Path of The Ponies - examines how the pit ponies lives were entwined with that of coal mining for many centuries. From conditions underground to training, from pony shows to retirement, the hidden lives of pit ponies continue to capture the imagination.
s pits grew deeper and thicker seams were worked, ponies were used for moving tubs underground. Women, and children under ten, were banned from underground work in the 1840s, so the use of ponies grew. In 1913 there were 70,000 ponies working in the British coalfields, but by 1992 this had fallen to just 23. The museum has two resident pit ponies, Eric and Ernie, and Clydesdale horse, Finn, and visitors can head to the stable yard and spend time getting to know the horses a part of their day out. The exhibition runs until 4th October and is open daily 10am – 5pm and entry is free. For more information, contact the Museum on 01924 848806 or info@ncm.org.uk, or visit www. ncm.org.uk

York-based Theatre Mill will present Agatha Christie’s celebrated courtroom drama ‘Witness for the Prosecution’ as a unique, in-the-round theatre experience at Leeds Civic Hall from Tuesday 28th July – Sunday 30th August. eonard Vole stands accused of murdering a rich widow. The stakes are high - a shocking witness testimony, impassioned outbursts from the dock and a young man’s fight to escape the hangman’s noose. You must shut out from your minds everything except what will take place in this Court... “It is always an exciting prospect to present a play for the first time in a building of great historical significance”, said Rebecca Stafford, producer and Theatre Mill’s founder. The work is shaped to capture the true spirit of a building, the Chambers are the perfect setting for audiences to witness the Queen of Crime’s shocking twists and turns that never fail to surprise.”
This is a gripping courtroom spectacle. Mathew Prichard, Grandson of Agatha Christie and C h a i r m a n of Agatha C h r i s t i e Limited, said: “It has been thrilling to follow audiences discovering my grandmother’s work from a new perspective. Theatre Mill’s approach in revealing plays and spaces together is a wonderful way to make this happen.”
The play’s sizeable cast will include celebrated regional actors Niall Costigan (The Legend of King Arthur, A Number, Rita, Sue and Bob Too) in the role of the accused Leonard Vole, and Gordon Kane (The Crucible, Wind in the Willows) as his defence barrister, Sir Wilfrid Robarts. Throughout the Summer holidays and beyond, the National Media Museum Bradford will host a series of free family events celebrating the UNESCO International Year of Light. ‘Light Fantastic: Adventures in the Science of Light’ runs until 1st November and explores the art and science of capturing and creating light with some unusual exhibits, fun workshops and interactive shows. The Museum will highlight the stories behind weird and wonderful inventions from the National Collections of Photography, Cinematography and Television that are dedicated to the use of light. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in specially commissioned art installations and demonstrations, as well as make their own light creations. The phenomenon of white light made from a spectrum of colour
is explored in ‘An Additive Mix’, a new installation by artist Liz West, where you will be able to walk among hundreds of coloured lights, which combine with infinity mirrors to create an endless white glow. Artists Martha Jurksaitis (Cherry Kino) and Christian Hardy (Alchemy Studio) create ‘Double Exposure: A Tale of Two Planets in Darkness and Light’ (Mon, Thurs, Sat until 4th Sept) – two fictional worlds, one permanently bathed in daylight and the other constant night. Interactive demonstrations of analogue and digital techniques in photography and film making, focus on the challenges of light conditions.
‘Get Hands On’ is a series of workshops and activities (until 4th Sept) that include experimenting with light and colour, creating camera-less photographs and making shadow puppets. ‘The Great Shadow Adventure’ explores ways that museum objects have used light to help tell tall tales; ‘Shaping Shadows’ creates beautifully intricate shadow puppets, inspired by the Java Puppets in the museum’s collection; ‘Colourful Chemistry’ experiments with colour and investigates the invisible; and ‘Light Printing’ uses lots of light but no camera to produce beautiful photographs. ‘Playing the Collections’ features Manchester-based artists David Birchall and Vicky Clarke, known collectively as Noise Orchestra (10th Sept – 1st Nov), who use electronics, photocells and sound frequencies to ‘play’ objects from the museum’s collection, culminating in an immersive, light and sound show. mmy Award-winning actress Greta Scacchi will star in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 12th September – 3rd October. This four-character memory play, which premiered in 1944, catapulted Williams from obscurity to fame. It has strong autobiographical elements, featuring characters based on Williams himself, his histrionic mother, and his mentally fragile sister Rose. A co-produced by Headlong, Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse and West Yorkshire Playhouse,
the story follows Amanda, the frustrated mother and faded Southern belle, a daughter lost in her imagination, and Tom - the son intent on rebellion. By night, he lives the life of an outlaw and assassin via his trips to the movies. By day, he works in a factory. The air in the apartment is thick with the scent of sickly sweet flowers and Amanda’s nostalgia. Laura barely survives it, clinging desperately to her only solace, her beloved glass menagerie. When Amanda insists Tom bring home a gentleman caller for Laura, the fragile dreams of all three are shattered with consequences they may never escape. Greta Scacchi as Amanda and Tom Mothersdale as her son are joined by Erin Doherty as Laura, and Eric Kofi Abrafa as Jim. The play is directed by Ellen McDougall, with design by Fly Davis, lighting by Richard Howell, and sound by Gareth Fry.

Leeds International Piano Competition Global Ambassador and acclaimed pianist Lang Lang, and 2012 Competition winner Federico Colli, are to perform a benefit concert at Leeds Town Hall on Wednesday 9th September in aid of the Leeds International Piano Competition.
“This is a great honour for Leeds and the Competition”, said Dame Fanny Waterman, who founded the Competition in 1961. “People come from all over the world wherever Lang Lang plays and you can’t get in! It is amazing to have someone of his calibre coming to the city and it shows that Leeds is a vibrant cultural centre. My hope is that the concert will benefit the Leeds International Piano Competition for years to come and demonstrate why Leeds should be named European Capital of Culture in 2023.”
Lang Lang is a firm supporter of the Competition’s work. His influence is firmly establishing the appeal classical music can have in popular culture. He has appeared in Time Magazine’s annual list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. In 2008 over four billion people viewed his performance in the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. In July 2012 he carried the Olympic torch in London prior to the opening of the 2012 London Games and in 2013 he

was appointed a Messenger of Peace for the United Nations by the Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. His influence has inspired over 40 million Chinese children to learn to play classical piano - a phenomenon which lead to The Today Show coining the phrase “the Lang Lang effect” which is evidently as strong as ever. The 18th Leeds International Piano competition will take place from 26th August – 13th September. Leeds West Indian Carnival, Europe’s longest running Caribbean carnival parade, takes to the streets once again on bank holiday Monday 31st August, with stunning costumes that have been months in the making, music and dance. And, afterwards, the party continues at Potternewton Park with more music and great food.
“For almost 50 years, Leeds Carnival has shared its recipe for a great day out with the perfect blend of stunning costumes, mesmerising music, delicious food and a great atmosphere”, said Carnival Founder, Arthur France. “Our planning for 2015 started the day after last year’s event to ensure that we continue to thrill audiences.” Carnival King & Queen Preceding the parade, West Yorkshire Playhouse will once again host the Carnival King and Queen Show, bringing breathtaking costumes to Its stage to compete for the Carnival King and Queen titles. “We were thrilled to host the Carnival King and Queen show last year,” said James Brining,
West Yorkshire Playhouse Artistic Director. “This spectacular event was a huge success and provided a fantastic start to our partnership with Leeds West Indian Carnival. We’re looking forward to this year’s show and celebrating the culture, inspiration and imagination this iconic event brings to Leeds.”
RJC & DAZL are Set to Dazzle in Carnival Parade! This year, young people from RJC Dance and DAZL (Dance Action Zone Leeds), are teaming up to create a choreographic fusion that will surprise and
captivate audiences. This unique artistic collaboration will perform as the Carnival parade passes through Chapeltown & Harehills. Both RJC Dance, based at the Mandela Centre in Chapeltown, and DAZL, who are based in Middleton, have won awards for their dance styles and practice, so this project promises to be a vision of creativity, style and community cohesion. The idea behind the collaboration is to give young people from different cultural backgrounds and parts of the city the opportunity to work together through workshops and dance sessions.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time started life at the National Theatre’s Cottesloe Theatre in 2012, transferred to the West End in 2013 (winning seven Olivier Awards) and is now simultaneously running at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End, on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, and is on a major tour of the UK and Ireland. It comes to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 25th to Saturday 29th August. Christopher, fifteen years old, stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog that has been speared with a garden fork. It is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in a book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has

Northern Ballet is committed to making ballet accessible for everyone, whether it is participating in a workshop or watching a dance performance. Offering programmes for children and adults, as well as specific projects for those with learning difficulties or physical disabilities, Northern Ballet reaches more than 50,000 participants annually and plays a vital role in enabling more people to access dance. ecently, the company hosted ‘Expressions’ at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, bringing together 75 participants from nine different dance groups from across the North of England and giving disabled dancers the chance to showcase their skills on a professional stage. Dancers from two of Northern Ballet’s programmes, Ability and ‘in motion’, performed. Ability is a programme designed for adults aged 16+ with mild to moderate learning difficulties. The course helps participants to improve their dance and performance skills, develop their communication and social interaction skills, and enables creativity and expression. ‘in motion’ was created for 8 – 19 year old self-propelling wheelchair users, and explores movement in and out of a wheelchair, aiming to develop strength, flexibility and creative expression. “Expressions emphasised the importance of making dance accessible to all by providing opportunities for disabled people to watch and participate in high quality dance”, said Selina McGonagle, Northern Ballet’s Director of Learning. “Our programmes provide the support and remove barriers to engagement for people with special needs.”
Northern Ballet has also created opportunities for visually impaired audiences to engage with dance. It offers audio described performances accompanied by a touch tour, enabling audiences to feel the props and costumes, and giving an insight into the movements from the production, assisted by the dancers. Northern Ballet offers ‘relaxed
performances’ for their ballets for children, which are aimed at people with autism and sensory or communication disorders. An extra ‘relaxed performance’ has been added for their latest ballet for children ‘Tortoise & the Hare’, which premieres in September. With their first Nourish restaurant thriving in Sheffield, nutritionist David Stache and his partners Ben Pryor and Richard Pryor have just opened their second location here in Leeds. This is fast food with a difference…. It is all really healthy and good for you! ithin days of opening, the Leeds location at 31 Bond Street, was out-performing the mother-shop in Sheffied! One day they actually ran out of food! So it all augurs well for David, who is definitely a man on a mission – the mission being to raise awareness of the nutritional values of food and tempt people away from unhealthy choices with delicious healthy options.
He’s all about fresh, ethically sourced ingredients and inspiring others to eat more healthily
I mean, when you think of fast food, you don’t usually envisage things like Sweet Potato, Poached Egg and Pesto, Mackerel Omega Power Salad, or Quinoa Porridge, do you? Nourish’s philosophy is to provide healthy fast food that is accessible and affordable, as well as to educate people on healthy choices. The menu lists not only the ingredients, but also their nutritional values, with a carefully considered balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats in every meal. It took David, who trained at university here in Leeds, years of research to create the right balances for Nourish’s
menus. As a nutritionist he works with a huge variety of people, including elite athletes, and he believes implicitly in the vital role food plays in good health…. like I said, he really is on a mission! Perhaps it was his mother’s cooking that first got him interested in food, as that was the one thing that drew him back to Sheffield every week during his student
days. Now he’s all about fresh, ethically sourced ingredients and inspiring others to eat more healthily. There will be classes and workshops at Nourish to help people turn their diets around and David is even offering people 20 minute free consultations. Recently we were treated to a taster evening and got to try Super Greens and Almond Butter Chia Smoothies (delish!), followed by Green Tea Poached Salmon, a fabulous Superfood Salad, Chicken Quinoa Satay and Miso Quinoa Pots, Moroccan Spiced Chicken, Thai Vegetable Curry with Rice, and a Super Greens Wrap. Apart from the fact that I would have liked the veg curry to be a little spicier (but then I am a bit of a spice hound), it was all so good – and, of course, we all felt so pleased with ourselves for having eaten so healthily!
Pictured: Ben Pryor, Richard Pryor & David Stache
The Leeds restaurant has a cool, industrial chic and eco friendly vibe with interiors modelled from recycled and reused materials. The menu has been designed specially for the new restaurant, catering for people’s nutritional needs and never compromising on flavour. Nourish is open from 7am until 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am-5pm Sundays, you’ll find a plethora of healthy options, including wraps, sandwiches, curries, salads and superfood boxes. Prepare to be well and truly Nourished this Summer!

Food & Drink
At other times of the year, you can whet your appetite with wild greens, or forage for flowers or fungi, but we pick the widest variety of produce on my foraging walks in August. hose fruit blossoms I’ve been watching since they opened in the early spring will finally be ready for picking. August is all about fruit – bilberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherry plums…all abound in the hedgerows and green spaces. This year promises to be one of the best I have seen since about 2007 for plums, and the sunshine we’re having means the blackberries should be extra sweet and juicy and the bilberries are looking fab too.

Yorkshire’s great for bilberries. They love acidic, poor soils. The straggly little bushes hug our moors and hillsides looking like a carpet of green and nothing more. But get closer and you will spot the tiny little berries that look like blueberries. They are actually the wild parent to cultivated blueberries and what they lack in size, they make up for in flavour. Darker than their

cultivated cousins, picking them will leave you with purple hands and mouths, so a berry picker is a handy tool to have. You can use them in any recipe that calls for blueberries like drop scones, jams or pies (bilberry pie is divine!). I will be celebrating the summer and fruit season in style with a Wild Food Garden Tea Party this August and I thought I would share one of the recipes that I will be serving…Bilberry Cupcakes. The yoghurt/milk combo means they work well made with gluten free flour, just add ¼ tsp xanthan gum.
Bilberry Cupcakes 75g butter (melted and cooled), 200g plain flour, ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda, 2 tsp baking powder, 80g caster sugar, 100g yoghurt, 100ml milk, 1 large egg, 175g bilberries
Preheat oven to 200C/gas mark 6. Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl. Beat the yoghurt, milk, egg and melted butter together. Using a wooden spoon, pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix gently until combined (slightly lumpy is fine, just don’t overmix). Quickly and gently fold in the bilberries. Spoon into 12 muffin cases and bake for 20 minutes until risen, golden and firm on top. Serve with a dollop of icing and decorate with fresh bilberries. As always, do not eat anything unless you are 100% sure of what it is. To learn more, visit www.msitu.co.uk
Help for Heroes (H4H) is asking the public to turn their BBQs into an opportunity to fundraise for wounded, injured and sick service personnel, veterans and their families. hether you invite friends over for a BBQ in your garden in exchange for a donation, or arrange a bigger community event, it all makes a difference to the support H4H can provide. “H4H is all about ‘doing your bit’ and this event is a wonderful example of people rallying support and having fun while they raise money”, said Emma Parry, CEO and co-
founder, Help for Heroes. “The money you raise is needed, it is being used and it is hugely appreciated.” H4H offers comprehensive support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses in the line of duty. This is provided through grants to individuals, other charities and organisations, capital build projects and four Recovery Centres across the UK which
offer support for life. The money raised has been used to support the wounded, but there is much more to do. Soldiers, sailors and airmen who are injured today will still need support tomorrow and often for the rest of their lives. A free fundraising pack is available, containing H4H wristbands, lapel pins, collecting boxes, bunting, balloons and a BBQ for Heroes banner. The ‘BBQ for Heroes’ campaign runs from 15th – 31st August, but if this isn’t convenient you can choose a date that is. lwoodley Quilters are holding a twelve-hour Quiltathon on 22nd August in the church hall of Lidgett Park Methodist Church, Lidgett Place, Roundhay LS8 1HQ. The aim is to make as many patchwork quilts as possible for the charity Women’s Aid, which helps women survivors of domestic abuse. These will be donated to the Leeds Woman’s Aid refuge and will be available for the women to take with them when they leave to start a new life. “As women we wanted to use our skills to support other women”, said Val Barnard, Alwoodley Quilters Committee member who organised the
event. “There’s a long tradition of making quilts to comfort those who suffer upheavals in their lives, and we hope that women who have had to flee their homes, often leaving all their possessions behind, will enjoy and draw comfort from the quilts we make. We intend to make this an ongoing relationship with Leeds Womens Aid.” Members of the public are invited to come along and see what is going on and meet the quilters between 10.30am and 5pm. Light refreshments will be available. For further information please contact Sandra Wyman on 0113 26 23791

Three years ago Leeds set out to be the best city in the UK for children and young people to grow up in. There are currently 180,000 children and young people in Leeds and, in a city of over 750,000 people, that’s a lot of young voices! Pictured: Sue Rumbold, Cllrs Lucinda Yeadon and Alice Smart, & Nigel Richardson
eeds City Council’s children’s services believe that these voices need to be heard and should be able to influence the decisions affecting their lives, particularly those young people who are either in foster care or supported by social care. Child Friendly Leeds is about making sure young people live in a place where they feel supported, valued and enjoy growing up. As part of this, the people of Leeds have been asked to play their part and put them at the heart of everything they do. Over the past three years, 350 ambassadors have signedup, pledging to improve the lives of young people in our city. These include individuals, businesses,

Anybody is welcome to get involved, and more people are joining the campaign every day. “It’s fantastic to see how much our ambition has grown over the past three years”, said Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, executive member for children and families. “It’s great that so many people are committed to our child friendly Leeds ambition and I hope even more people will join us as we continue to grow!” If you’re interested in joining the child friendly campaign, contact childfriendlyleeds@leeds. gov.uk , or visit www.leeds.gov. uk/childfriendlyleeds

Leeds Rhino’s player, Danny McGuire, recently launched ‘Space for me’, a new fundraising campaign for Leeds Mencap, which aims to raise £750,000 towards the total £2.5 million cost for a new building in East Leeds. he new building will enable the charity to help 2,000 people every year and provide a community space for local groups, and will also house a much needed
nursery. Built on the site of Mount St. Mary’s School on Raincliffe Road, just off the York Road, it will be double the size of the charity’s existing space.
“There are hundreds of young people and families with learning disabilities that won’t get the support they need without this new centre”, said Danny. “I’ve worked with Leeds Mencap for a long time and I’ve seen the positive impact they have. The new building will expand services making the impact even greater.” The charity, which has been supporting children and adults with learning disabilities in Leeds for over 60 years, has identified a number of other groups and service providers to work with in the new building. The initiative is supported by pledges from Jimbo’s Fund, managed by Leeds Community Foundation, Trusts and individual donors. For further information, www.leedsmencap.org.uk/ spaceforme

News From Your Councillor CLLR DANIEL COHEN
Alwoodley Ward To slightly misquote the great Robert Burns “The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray” – or as we often say in these parts – if it can go wrong it will. I was reminded of this famous line during a telephone conversation with a local resident who wanted to know
CLLR BILL URRY
Roundhay Ward Local Environment One of my hats is as Environment Champion for Inner North East Leeds - Roundhay, Moortown and Chapel Allerton. Environment means everything from street cleaning to graffiti, gulley clearing, fly tipping and the state of grass verges. The Community Committee covering the area now has its own small dedicated team responsible for this work. This is a diverse area, ranging from vibrant Oakwood with its Farmers’ Market and brilliantly renovated clock, through to the similarly lively streets of Meanwood and Chapel Allerton, to the Brackenwoods and Queenshills. For the Environmental team, the whole area needs particularly high levels of leaf and detritus sweeping year round.
what the delay was with our much needed health centre. I explained that there had been an unavoidable delay in finalising the land transfer from the Council over to the developer of the Health Centre – fortunately this has now happened and all is once again running smoothly. As always, watch this space for the latest developments with our new health centre. I have had a number of emails this month asking me to encourage those who live in narrow roads to, please, park in their drives rather than on the street (often half off and half on the kerb). I have also had a large number of emails concerned about hedges straying from peoples front gardens, onto the pavement and causing something of an obstruction. In both cases I have been exhorted upon to write about these issues in this column, which I have now done. I
appreciate that these may not be the issues that change the world, but they are the issues that can make our part of the city that bit better if we all work to improve them. Returning to Mr Burns’ quote, I am mindful that many will seek to grab a few weeks in warmer climbs in the coming weeks. If you are lucky enough to be having a summer break I wish you a bon voyage and a safe return and, whether you are going to Toulon, Tortula or Torbay, remember the great man’s words and while we’re at it one of my favourite lines from my own father “I’ve always thought that a family holiday was a contradiction in terms.”
Roundhay Park is a city-wide facility, but delegation has been broadened to include maintenance of more locally managed sites, including community parks, cemeteries, recreation grounds, urban and natural woodland, local green spaces, and sponsored roundabouts. Investment decisions on these sites are now decided locally to help achieve the Leeds Quality Park Standard. The Community Committee will be responsible for the allocation of labour resources in discussion with Parks and Countryside officers. Inevitably, all areas have their problems ranging from neglected gardens, to intermittent fly tipping. But what delegation does mean is that priorities can be set, and decisions and action taken on these fundamental problems that affect people’s lives within
the community by councillors and officers who know the area well.
Have a great month! Daniel.cohen@leeds.gov.uk 0113 204 1094

n late Summer many birds become less visible as they moult their feathers, often worn out by the pressures of the breeding season, and grow new ones in preparation for the Winter. At this time, they may be unable to fly well and are vulnerable to predators, skulking in bushes and the tops of trees to avoid exposure. The opposite is however true for their newly fledged young, so the birds you do see can sometimes be confusing to recognise. They are often as big as the adults, but can look very different, a bit like ‘unfinished versions’ of their parents. Young robins are speckled brown on the breast instead of red, and young goldfinches

lack the striking red and black patterns on the head. Juvenile woodpeckers can be recognised by the large red patch on the top of their head, and you may sometimes see the adult introducing the juvenile to your feeders. Juvenile blue tits have yellow instead of white cheeks, and young great tits are generally duller than the adults, and sooty where the adult is jet black. Young house sparrows and chaffinches are very like adult females, but young starlings could not be more different – mostly muddy brown and whitish on the front, with none of the adults’ gorgeous iridescence.

Make a chive hedgehog Cut a large hole in the side of an old plastic squash bottle and make some drainage holes in the other side. Wrap it in old sacking or the leg of an old pair of tights and tuck the fabric inside the hole in the bottle. Fill with compost and plant up with
chive seeds. Sew on beads for eyes and a pom-pom nose to give him his face. 2. Harvest together! Picking and eating fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden is an eternally popular activity for children. Strawberries, tomatoes and peas are especially good. 3. Paint some pebble animals These lovely ladybirds or bees, bugs

and any other animals can be made by painting pebbles with acrylic paint and a coat of varnish. 4. Collect seeds for next year. If some of your flowers and vegetables have gone to seed you can leave the seed heads in place until the seeds are dry and ripe. It’s fun for the kids to help you collect seed to put into envelopes for planting next year. It will save you money too. If the weather is wet you can make and decorate envelopes together to collect your seeds in. 5. Decorate plant labels. Wooden lolly sticks can be bought really cheaply at craft shops and have the advantage that they can be painted easily and are better for the environment than plastic. I use match pots of colourful garden paint (such as Cuprinol Garden Shades) to make a cheerful base coat and then the children can write or draw on them with felt tip pens.

The aim the Family Fun Day was to raise awareness about the Woods and the Friends’ group, as well as provide an afternoon of fun and entertainment for the community. In

addition to the numerous activities and displays, there was live music, games, and some wonderful food. The grant from Aviva will enable the group to get started on their Meadow Regeneration Scheme, which will create a wildflower meadow in the woods that will offer a diverse habitat using a wide variety of planting to attract insects, butterflies, bees and birds to the woodland. They will be looking for volunteers to work with the Group. If you are interested, contact them via www.fgvw.co.uk or facebook

Kapadia
FILM
REVIEW
presents this heartrending story with
BY BRENDAN CAMPBELL
AMY DIRECTED BY: ASIF KAPADIA STARRING: ASIF KAPADIA CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 128 MINS ike Senna, director Asif Kapadia’s stunning documentary about the life of Ayrton Senna, Amy is another revealing, intimate and ultimately tragic portrait of an incredible talent whose flame was snuffed out too soon. The film is a fittingly heartfelt and respectful tribute to Winehouse’s outstanding artistry and highlights not only her natural musicianship and incredible vocal prowess but also her considerable gifts as a songwriter. If only we were able to appreciate the wonder of Amy Winehouse purely as she wished and longed to live – in song, free to explore her limitless creative potential. Unfortunately, any document that would attempt a testimony of Amy’s life must inevitably veer into darkness and journey to the end of the harrowing and devastating spiral that eventually claims her. In recounting in agonising detail a tale we all saw played out before our eyes, Amy inspires awe and sympathy for its subject and, carrying the weight of its foregone conclusion, is heartbreakingly sad. The film’s first hour re-humanises Winehouse by introducing us to a young girl with an extraordinary voice who is open hearted, disarmingly forthright and honest, fun and funny. It reclaims the private persona that was lost amid the throng in the voraciously carnivorous media circus that was instrumental in her demise. We are reminded that
sensitivity and palpable sympathy and compassion for his subject
here was a person, a gifted, intensely vulnerable person utterly unprepared for the attention and pressures that her talent would draw to her. The story of an incredible artist, a sensitive soul battling demons who descends into a drink and drugs hell is so familiar to us now it is understandably the stuff of cliché. Amy Winehouse’s struggles were played out very publicly, exacerbating the situation. The depressing suggestion is that, in today’s celebrity obsessed culture, it’s not enough to be a singular talent who gives the world sublime music, but seeing a troubled young woman hounded to the grave is the kind of sordidly cathartic ‘entertainment’ the public craves. The film has generated controversy as some people don’t emerge looking particularly good, least of all Winehouse’s husband, Blake Fielder Civil, and her father, Mitch, who has
publically taken issue with his depiction in the documentary. Not surprising, as the film tacitly begs the question; who is ultimately responsible for Amy’s death? The tabloid press is a prime suspect, but Mitch’s assertion that Amy didn’t require rehab (when she clearly did) and her toxic, drug fuelled relationship with the exploitative Blake also suggest that a lack of attentive compassion from those around her also played a considerable part. As for Fielder Civil, I found myself clenching fists and teeth any time this crashing asshat appeared on screen, feeling disgust that this pitiful excuse for a human could serve as paramour and muse to one of the greatest musical figures of her generation. But I guess, as Winehouse herself acknowledged, love really is blind. The film puts the audience through the emotional wringer, engendering a genuine sense of loss and frustration during the fleeting glimpses of false dawns when it seemed Winehouse may have been able to pull herself out of the spiral only to be consumed by it once again. But among the horrors there are also beautifully touching and affecting moments such as when a newly (and briefly) clean and sober Winehouse is in the studio recording a series of duets
with one of her most revered idols and inspirations, Tony Bennett. Star-struck and putting pressure on herself to rise to the occasion, Winehouse feels she’s making a hash of it while Bennett reassures her she’s doing great. In that moment you feel her confidence may shatter and worry she might just unravel. However, not only does she keep it together but she absolutely nails the session leading Bennett to express his admiration and respect for ‘a true jazz singer’ who he considers to be of the calibre of Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald. Coming from one who knows, there really isn’t any praise higher than that. One of the saddest and most galling things about the Amy Winehouse story is to see how a genuinely unique talent was reduced to a punchline and treated like a sideshow freak. It makes you realise that she was failed by many more people than just her inner circle. Kapadia has done an impressive job by presenting this heartrending story in the best way possible, with sensitivity and palpable sympathy and compassion for his subject. It’s a difficult watch at times but perhaps it’s a necessary one. I would urge you to see it and then listen to the albums Frank and Back to Black on repeat.

EP Review:
Fuzzy Jones – Junk Shop Folk The announcement of new music from Fuzzy Jones is always welcome news and this short but sweet EP delivers the delectable aural treats we’ve come to expect from this bewitchingly brilliant psych-folk pixie. aving moved on from previous full band project Love of the Brave, Fuzzy has now confidently re-emerged as a solo artist aided and abetted by guitar-wielding sideman, Johnny Flockton (moonlighting from his day job in Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip) and has clearly been busy crafting some really quite exquisite fresh tunage.
The Junk Shop Folk EP serves to whet our appetites for the forthcoming album, Blood & Coffee and certainly leaves one hungry for more. It’s the album’s title track which kicks off the proceedings here and it’s a woozy, bluesy delight embellished with subtly shaky, clattering percussion which adds to the elegantly loose, somewhat hungover feel of the song.
Medicine My Wine opens with Fuzzy’s light and breezy vocal drifting over a thrumming fingerpicked guitar line and picks up pace with the addition of synthy keyboard sounds and a rhythm track that calls to mind Beck or The Beta Band. It’s wonderfully balanced in composition and arrangement with a haunting melody. The ukulele-led This Ole Hammock is as jauntily carefree as its title implies and seems to gently insist upon becoming your summer soundtrack. As ever, Miss Jones’ voice is exceedingly pleasing to the ear and this new batch of songs is like the musical equivalent of comfort food; reliably nourishing and feel-good. The instrumentation here is thoughtfully and tastefully laid down and everything is held together by Fuzzy’s enchanting, one-of-a-kind voice that is truly capable of transporting you somewhere very special. Welcome to Night Vale is a podcast presented in the form of a local news radio show for the fictional town of Night Vale, reporting on the strange events that occur within it. If you imagine a mash-up of the imaginations of David Lynch, HP Lovecraft and Tim Burton with a little X-Files and Twilight Zone thrown in for good measure, you’re on the right track.

In early September, music students of all genres will come together to study Indian music at HEART, Bennett Road in Headingley. The three day course, entitled IMOWI (Indian Music on Western Instruments), will be the second of its kind.
Pictured: Jesse Bannister
MOWI was founded by Jesse Bannister, a leading classical Indo jazz saxophonist with years of international touring, education and composition under his belt. He is now making an impact with his captivating blend of Indian classical music and contemporary Western styles. The sessions will be co-led by Indian vocalist Anol Chatterjee, visiting from India, who will provide a rare opportunity for vocalists wishing to deepen their understanding of Indian music.
“Indian music has such a wealth of knowledge and tradition which can be applied to all forms of music”, said Jesse. “I believe it is very important to continue to develop my education work as well as my performance work. I always learn the most when I am teaching and consider it a great privilege to meet so many talented musicians within Leeds and to pass on my knowledge of Indian music.” The techniques of practice known as ‘Riaz’ are crucial to the overall discipline of this ancient traditional artform. With

The course will run 10am – 5pm, Thursday 3rd – Saturday 5th September. Jesse also hopes to resume his regular classes starting in September. powerful new drama about a war hero’s last game of cricket on the eve of World War Two will be performed at Headingley Stadium on Tuesday 1st September, the first day of the LV= County Championship match against Somerset, and Thursday 24th September, the third day of the Championship match against Sussex. The Last Match is the story of the 1939 county cricket match between Yorkshire and Sussex where Leeds-born bowling legend, Hedley Verity took seven wickets for nine runs in a phenomenal game which saw Yorkshire storm to victory as the clouds of war gathered over Britain. The play explores the emotions of a generation clinging on to the last moments of peace in full knowledge that war was on the doorstep. The performance at Headingley on 1st September will
mark 76 years to the day that the match took place, two days before Britain declared war on Germany. It was Hedley Verity’s last ever match – four years later he died of his wounds after fighting in Sicily. The Last Match is written and directed by Yorkshire duo, author and former Head of BBC Yorkshire, Colin Philpott, and film director and digital artist, Kit Monkman. “As a cricket fan I have always been fascinated by Hedley Verity and the final match he played against the powerful backdrop of a country entering into war”, said Colin. “But this is a story which transcends cricket. It’s about people reacting to a moment of crisis and their differing attitudes to duty.”
The play explores the emotions of a generation clinging on to the last moments of peace There will be two performances each day, at 12.30 and 6pm. Tickets (£5) are available from the Ticket Office in the Yorkshire Cricket Centre, Headingley, or online at www. yorkshireccc.com/lastmatch

Bushcraft adventures have always been portrayed as more suitable for men than women, but that is all about to change! ayley Gillard, founder of ‘Wild Goose’, has just launched a series of workshops inspired by the power of outdoor adventure and the positive impact of nature on mental health. Aimed at women in search of adventure, fun and relaxation, Wild Goose is an innovative Social Enterprise delivering activities like campfire cooking, barefoot walking, outdoor yoga and natural crafts to promote positive wellbeing. At ‘Women Get Wild’ women will learn bushcraft, how to build shelters and perfect campfires; ‘Be a Natural Beauty’ is all about pampering in the beauty of the great outdoors, creating your very own beauty products, being mindful and taking a barefoot walk, all in the stillness of the forest.
Wild Goose promotes positive wellbeing and challenges the stigma that surrounds mental health conditions. It is inspired by Haley’s own experience of anxiety and how the great outdoors helped her through, and she invests the profits from her bushcraft and natural beauty workshops back in to the community, to help support individuals with depression and anxiety. Maths Camp Has the Answer for Number Whizz-Kids Young number crunchers from primary schools around Leeds got together recently to multiply their maths skills at a summer camp run by The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL).
Pictured: Aryan and Iptisam from Brownhill Primary
hirty six pupils from 14 schools attended the threeday camp, which expanded their maths knowledge interactively to a level beyond their school year. The pupils, from Years 4 and 5, were selected on the basis of their ability in maths. The children spent two days at GSAL Junior School, working on fun maths games and activities designed to develop their problemsolving skills and teamwork. The third day was spent at the University
of Leeds, where they did a maths-themed campus trail and experienced their first university lecture. The programme was devised by GSAL Junior School teacher James Shepherd, together with colleagues from the White Rose Maths Hub at Trinity Academy, Halifax. “We aim to raise aspirations and attainment for more able young mathematicians, and provide an opportunity for children of similar ability to work together”, said James. “We hope to encourage them to think more logically and realise where maths can take them.” The summer camp is supported by the Department for Education’s Independent State School Partnership primary curriculum project. GSAL was one of a number of schools that successfully bid for funding by submitting
proposals for cross-sector projects to strengthen the teaching of subjects in Key Stage 1 and 2. Primary schools taking part in the camp were Pool-in-Wharfedale, Rawdon St Peter’s C of E, West End Primary Horsforth, Beeston Hill St Luke’s, Carr Manor, Kerr Mackie, Gledhow, Allerton, Brodetsky, St Peter’s C of E and Brownhill Primary, Fountain Primary in Morley, Crossley Fields in Mirfield and Harewood Primary School.

orthern Ballet has been working with three children’s centres in Leeds to explore classic children’s books like Michael Rosen’s ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ and Maurice Sendak’s ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. This year 31 children under the age of three and their parents from Castleton, Quarry Mount and Shepherd’s Lane children’s centres were involved in the five-week project led by Sophie Alder, Northern Ballet’s Dance
Younger Life
Education Officer. The sessions, at both the children’s centres and Northern Ballet’s HQ, set out to engage young children with dance through music, storytelling and multisensory play. The project also aims to develop centre staff confidence and skills in delivering creative movement sessions. “Northern Ballet believes in the importance of providing access to dance for people in the community of all ages, backgrounds and abilities”, said Sophie.
They set out to engage young children with dance through music
“For children’s centre staff these projects provide a unique opportunity to work alongside a professional dance artist to develop their skills and the children themselves respond wonderfully to these sessions, especially when they are linked to stories that the children know.” For more information on Northern Ballet’s Learning projects, visit northernballet. com/joinin.

For the past two years, Bracken Edge Primary School in Chapeltown has enjoyed huge success with their filmmaking club for children aged 8 to 11. This month, they took their work to the big screen with a cinema showcase event for local councillors and media professionals, where a number of local schools completed in an Oscar-style event recognising their achievements at the Cottage Road Cinema in Headingley.
Student Engineering Project Wins Gold A team of students from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has scooped two sought after awards at the Big Bang Fair Yorkshire and Humber, which celebrates science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people. The five lower sixth students designed and built a prototype quadcopter for conducting aerial roof inspections, which actually took off and impressed the judges. The team – Cathy Wicks, Nat Kunin, Andrew Huff, Faizan Siraj and Sam Seldon – came away with both the regional prize for Best Project (Computing) and the CREST Gold Award from the British Science Association that recognises achievement in STEM project work. The students now have the opportunity to develop their ideas further and represent the Yorkshire and Humber region at The Big Bang
he children of Bracken Edge Film Club were incredibly excited about this event, which has seen support from Child Friendly Leeds, ArtForms, Vista and big names from the celebrity world. With a camera crew on site from MadeInLeeds it promised to be an event they would never forget. Teacher and Film Club coordinator, Harry Shires said: “I am so proud of these young people. We have all been on such a wonderful journey together producing films that really stir your emotions and tackle world issues. We’ve won two awards so far (Chapel Allerton Film Festival in November 2014 & Leeds Golden Owl Awards in April 2015) and this is just the beginning.”
Beau Gilligan (Y-6) is one of the editors in the Film Club and he said, “I think the biggest thing I am going to miss from Film Club is just all the experiences that we’ve had. It’s unbelievable the things we have achieved.” Ellis Williams (Y-6), one of the camera operators, said: “We had such good times it’s just going to be sad to leave them all behind.” The cinema showcase event was a great success with a huge turnout. For one day, their lives were transformed into that of Hollywood actors with all the associated glitz and glamour! To find out more about Bracken Edge Film Club, visit www. brackenedge.leeds.sch.uk
UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair next March. “The team has worked very hard since October, designing their model and sourcing all materials themselves to construct it from scratch”, said GSAL physics teacher Rory O’Flanagan. “To produce a working quadcopter that can fly is an incredible achievement.” A second team from GSAL also won through to the national Big Bang event next year. Calling themselves Bamboozle, John Greathead, Alexandra Lethenyey, Oliver Bell, Thomas Bell, and Arvind Narayan won Most Innovative Idea and the CREST Gold Runner Up Award for their sustainable bamboo quadcopter.
n preparation for the world of work, 168 pupils at Carr Manor Community School recently attended a morning of mock interviews which tested communication skills, body language, and the pupils’ general attitude and ability to sell themselves. Organised by Carr Manor and the Leeds Ahead Partnership, the feedback from the session was overwhelmingly positive. “I learnt a lot about how to cope in an interview situation, which is really useful”, said Madhiye Ahmed (Y-11). “I got really good feedback”, said Jake Wray. “The lady said I was very enthusiastic and that I had good knowledge of where I wanted to be in five years. It was very useful because it gave you an idea of what to expect when you leave school and made you think about what you wanted to do.”
The pupils’ maturity really shone through
Interviewers from the NHS, Asda, and Eversheds Solicitors, all commented on how impressed they were with the pupils’ confidence and attitude, and commended them for having plans for the future at this early stage. “The pupils’ maturity really shone through”, said Anita Simey, Leeds Community Healthcare. “They know where they are going and that is a really good outlook to have.” The interviews were part of a scheme from the school’s careers department. Each pupil was given their feedback sheets so they could learn further from the session. Those displaying particularly impressive skills were presented with certificates of achievement.

Fulneck School physics students spent five days in Naples this term, working with pupils from three other schools on a European seismology partnership programme.
Picture Award Akram
welve Years 9 – 12 pupils took part in the Erasmus + Project (funded by the European Union) and presented their work into studying earthquakes at a workshop hosted by IT IS Majorana, Nola, Naples. During their stay, they were exposed to a wealth of new experiences, including coping with a language barrier, cultural differences, and developing skills such as teamwork, leadership and social interaction. Fulneck is one of two schools from the UK chosen for the ‘Teaching Seismology in School’
(TeSS) initiative to develop low cost, reliable seismometers to be used by schools in Kenya. Once developed, these will be linked to Raspberry Pi computers and programmed to record seismic activity in the country, with the results being fed back to the four European schools. The pupils will also be engaged in activities using practical measurements of earthquakes as an inspirational tool to reinforce their learning in physics, earth sciences and computing.
“The five days in Naples was an incredible experience for our pupils, where they had to work side by side with counterparts from schools in Naples, Nice and Torquay”, said Ian Harrison, Head of Physics. “This is an important project that is helping youngsters to take up science subjects and will ultimately lead to a number of participants becoming scientists of the future. Our seismology club runs as an extracurricular activity after school and it is very well attended. There is a real interest in this subject.”
Pictured:Jamie Jones-Buchanan with Governors’ Award winner Aleksandra Trzcionkowska and Akram Khammo Award winner Danny Jackson.
Leeds Rhinos player Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Fabian Hamilton MP were among the special guests celebrating the achievements of Carr Manor Community School pupils recently. Certificates and trophies were awarded for subjects, character for learning, contributions to coaching a n d t h e c o m m u n i t y, work experience and attendance, in addition to the prestigious Akram K h a m m o Awa rd f o r achievement in the face of adversity, and the Governors’ Award.
“Children and staff at our school work incredibly hard throughout the year and it was a privilege to celebrate their success with families and the wider community”, said Executive principal Simon Flowers. “The ceremony particularly recognised the strength of character that all our children routinely display and we are very proud of their achievements.”
Jamie Jones-Buchanan spoke about his experiences in the world of rugby and said the values the pupils were already displaying would be invaluable to them in the future. “These young people are the new citizens of Leeds and making my home town even better”, he said. “There is nothing special about me or where I grew up, but because I had an opportunity to fulfil my potential I have been able to go on a really good journey and win some medals. You have got to be you, when you realise what your special talent is you have to ask what you are going to do with it, and be consistently resilient.” Fabian Hamilton, MP for Leeds North East, paid tribute to the teachers and pupils, saying that their efforts had made the school one of the very best. “They say the quality of teachers has a profound effect on the future of the pupils they teach. If that is the case, there is no doubt that the pupils of Carr Manor Community School are going to have a very bright future indeed.”
