IVY BENSON (1913-1993) AND HER ALL GIRLS BAND

Leeds girl Ivy Benson topped the bill in the 1930s and 40s as a jazz saxophonist and leader of a talented, glamorous all girls band, beating off prejudice and competition from the many famous male dance bands of the time. She reached a peak of popularity in the Second World War, when she and her Girls toured the country and broadcast daily on the radio – everybody tuned in then – bringing rhythm and song, some joy, fun, and the promise of happier times, to people at home and the troops overseas. vy was born in 1913 in her grandparents’ pub, the Malt Shovel, in Lowerhead Row (now the Headrow), near the corner with Vicar Lane. Her father Douglas, ‘Digger’ Benson, worked originally as a riveter but doubled as a musician, playing trombone in the pit at the Empire theatre on Briggate. He was later to run his own dance bands in Leeds. When Ivy was six, the family moved to 59 Cemetery Road, Beeston (now with a blue plaque) and she went to the local school, St Luke’s. From the start her father had musical ambitions for her – she had piano lessons from age five, and he taught her the clarinet and the trombone. She was a born performer: aged nine, she featured in an early Children’s Hour radio programme playing ‘In a Persian Market’, and in 1923 she won a talent contest at the Empire singing the latest hit ‘Yes, we have no bananas!’ When she acquired a Benny Goodman record, she fell in love with jazz and was inspired to take up the clarinet and later the saxophone – mostly regarded then as for men only! She won a scholarship to the Leeds College of Art when she left school at 14, but money was short. So she went to work at Montague Burton’s huge factory in Hudson Road, Burmantofts, at 15 shillings

a week, and saved up for her first alto sax. She worked from 8 until 6, then played at dances most nights from 8 until 2 or 3 am – dancing was all the rage. In the end it was too much and she left the factory. She joined the Leeds-based ‘Rhythm Girls’ band and worked with them and other groups until, at 23, she got a chance to go to London where she found a job in a sleazy night club. There she was spotted by the bandleader Teddy Joyce, and toured with his band ‘the Girlfriends’ as a featured soloist – ‘the ace saxophonist of Great Britain’. When war began, with many male musicians leaving for the Front, she formed her own all girls band. The band won an audition for a popular touring revue, ‘Radio Rodeo’ starring Hylda Baker, and then, with the help of the impresario Jack Hylton, was booked into Covent Garden, which had been converted into a ballroom. In 1943 (to protests from male musicians) they got the coveted job of BBC house band, based in Bristol, broadcasting at all hours of the night and day to the troops as well as to home audiences. In 1944 Ivy’s band topped the bill at the London Palladium for six months, and at the end of the war was personally invited by Field Marshal Montgomery to fly to Berlin to join the victory celebrations. Tours with ENSA followed all over Western Europe, while at home they starred in shows around the country and at Butlin’s holiday camps. Ivy and her girls offered a sensational combination of musicianship and glamour. Her girls had to play brilliantly and look like film-stars. They worked hard and played hard: she had a constant turnover of band members who left to get married. Recruiting often from Northern brass bands, she gave many women the chance of an exciting life as professional musicians. Her own personal life was less successful – her two marriages ended in divorce, without children. She went on fronting her band into the 1970s, but the big band era was over. She lived with her father for many

years but after his death in 1977 she retired to Clacton-on-Sea, where she used to entertain holidaymakers by playing the electronic organ. She died in 1993. Over the years there have been several radio and TV interviews and programmes about her, the latest just a few months ago. And there are still people who remember hearing her and her band, with their signature tune ‘Lady be good’, playing wonderful music which had the power to lift the spirits even in the darkest times.

Ever since the Cistercian monks at Kirkstall Abbey began rearing sheep and selling their fleeces to European merchants, wool has played a vital role in the story of Leeds. Whilst wool and its products made Leeds wealthy, it also gave the city a Nobel prize winning scientific team whose legacy went far beyond the textile industries of West Yorkshire. n 1938, a young scientist called Archer Martin arrived in Leeds to work at the Wool Industries Research Association (WIRA), based in a Victorian house called ‘Torridon’ on Headingley Lane. WIRA was one of several research associations whose aim was to maintain the UK’s competitive edge against foreign rivals such Germany and the USA by improving industrial output through the application of basic science. Martin was fascinated by chemistry and whilst still a boy had built his own distillation apparatus from a stack of coffee tins filled with coke. It was this technical skill which enabled him, in 1941, together with his colleague Richard Synge, to develop a laboratory technique which allowed the precise analysis of the basic chemical building blocks that made up the protein fibres in wool. Known as partition chromatography, Martin and

Pictured: Archer Martin

These developments enabled scientists in the 1970s to produce human insulin from genetically modified bacteria

Synge’s method went on to become an essential tool in biochemistry and, although initially developed for the chemical analysis of wool fibres, its impact was felt far beyond the world of textiles. Using this method, the US biochemist Erwin Chargaff was able to analyse the chemical composition of DNA, the molecule of heredity, whilst the Cambridge biochemist Fred Sanger was able to unravel the entire chemical make-up of the hormone insulin. Both of these developments enabled scientists

in the 1970s to produce human insulin from genetically modified bacteria - which has since been of immense benefit to millions of patients with diabetes. In recognition of their achievements, Martin and Synge were awarded the 1952 Nobel Prize for chemistry and although the original Victorian house in which they once worked has long since been demolished, leaving only a solitary gatepost bearing the name ‘Torridon’ the impact of their work on biology and medicine will always stand as a lasting memorial to them. -Dr. Kersten Hall, Centre for History and Philosophy of Science, University of Leeds

The author will be giving a talk and signing copies of his recent book ‘The Man in the Monkeynut Coat’ which tells the story of pioneering Leeds scientist William Astbury and his long neglected role in the story of DNA, at Blackwells bookshop on Woodhouse Lane on Thur 26th February at 6pm. Admission is free and copies of the book will be available at a special event price.

Tickets are already on sale for the eighth Headingley LitFest, which begins in early March, and lasts until the end of the month. The theme this year is ‘Something Else’. enowned poet Lemn Sissay, and historian Juliet Barker will be headlining a diverse programme, which includes new work, book launches, and contributions from local writers and performers. “We are ecstatic that Lemn Sissay has agreed to come to Headingley”, said LitFest Secretary Richard Wilcocks. “He will appear on Friday 20th March at Leeds City Academy in Woodhouse. Students from several schools will share the stage, but the show is open to all. He’s a terrific performer!” Lemn is author of several books of poetry alongside articles, records, public art, and plays. He adapted Benjamin Zaphaniah’s ‘Refugee Boy’, a great hit, for West Yorkshire Playhouse last year and was an official poet for the London Olympics. Juliet Barker will introduce ‘England Arise!’ at Headingley Library on Monday 16th March. In her most recent book, she turns her attention to the Summer of 1381, when England erupted in the ‘Peasant’s Revolt’. There was a call for the abolition of serfdom, freedom from tolls and taxes, the right for men to choose who they worked for and, perhaps most revolutionary of all, for the seizure of the Church’s wealth and property.

Northern Ballet opens its Spring 2015 season with the UK Première of JeanChristophe Maillot’s, (Les Ballets de Monte Carlo), production of Romeo & Juliet at Leeds Grand Theatre from 4th – 12th March. et to P ro ko f i ev ’s unforgettable score, played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia, Romeo & Juliet is choreographed by Jean-Christophe Maillot. His interpretation captures the essence of what it means to be young and in love, and tells of the devastating tragedy that unfolds when tenderness and naivety is met with violence and pride. This is Northern Ballet’s first collaboration with Maillot and the first time that this production of Romeo & Juliet has been performed in the UK.

This is an inspired contemporary response to the classic play

“I have chosen to add Jean-Christophe Maillot’s interpretation of Romeo & Juliet to our repertoire as it is an inspired contemporary response to the classic play”, said David Nixon, Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director. “I was also looking for a production that would provide a complete contrast and different point of view for our audience and artists from our present signature production of Christopher Gable, Massimo Moricone

and Lez Brotherston’s Romeo & Juliet. We will not be losing this version from our repertoire but will be offering a new interpretation for our audiences to experience and to reflect upon. I am honoured to be the first British company to present Jean-Christophe Maillot’s work.” Visit www.northernballet.com for more information.

Five years ago artist Jo Lee was commissioned by East Street Arts and funded by Leeds City Council to produce a piece of work to celebrate the elderly residents of the city. The outcome was Wave – a mixed media installation that includes a hundred cast hands cradling old photographic memories. Jo worked with three care homes – Headingley Hall, Donisthorpe Hall and Carr Croft – to involve the residents, carers and their families in the creation of a work that explores the preservation of memories and challenges our perception of the elderly. Originally exhibited at Leeds City Museum it was also shown at Leeds Civic Hall, Leeds Art Library, Leeds University and Donisthorpe Hall. ive years on, Wave breathes again at The Bowery in Headingley. For this new showing Jo has added a further dimension to the work in the form of audio recordings of recent interviews with some of the original participants, played over a visual loop of photos. The voices reflect on the process of ageing and the experience of change. These include the thoughts of the oldest and youngest participants. Calum was a three-month-old babe in arms when his hand was cast but here tells us how being five is great as he now goes to school and makes potions for dragons! Meanwhile, Ann, who had already had her telegram from the Queen five years ago, expresses her mixed feelings about living to be 106. Jo sees Ann as a truly inspirational woman. “I am in awe of her”, she said. “She still lives independently, is sharper than most people half her age and is a seriously stylish woman. It has been an absolute privilege getting to work with her and all the other people who have shared

their memories and perceptions of the journey of life. The passing of time since the last showing of the work has also, inevitably, meant that some of those involved are sadly no longer with us. But the work is one way of maintaining a loving memory of all these wonderful people.” Wave is on show at The Bowery until 20 March. Jo is holding a ‘Tea and Gingers’ afternoon 4-6pm on Saturday 24th January where people are invited to contribute their thoughts on Wave, ageing, memories and mortality through either written or audio contributions. Since Wave, Jo has had a busy five years. As well as gaining her teaching qualification and running workshops, she has exhibited at the Potteries Museum in Stoke and various galleries and shows around the country. She has also created a ceramic menagerie of crazy inventions named Tribods, BabyDogs and EyeBalls. For further information, visit www.jolee.uk.com or follow her on Twitter @joleeworld.

ed Ladder Theatre recently announced that Tessa Gordziejko was taking over as the chair of its board when Bernard Atha CBE retires from the post, after more than 30 years at the helm. Tessa is Creative Director at Imove Arts, as well as a freelance producer, consultant and writer. She was Creative Programmer for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad programme in Yorkshire and a Fellow of the Clore Leadership Programme 2005-7. Her early career includes working with radical theatre companies such as Monstrous Regiment and Half Moon Theatre (London). She also

worked for Red Ladder in 1986, as Company Manager for the tour of Back to the Walls. “I’m inspired and honoured to take on the role of Chair of Red Ladder in this time of change, and also of great opportunity for the company”, said Tessa. “My career has thrived on challenges, and I look forward to working with the Board to build a strong future for the company outside the Arts Council’s National Portfolio. I share the company’s passion for taking radical performance about big, important issues to new audiences. Never has Red Ladder been more needed than now and I intend to play a part in ensuring the company not only survives, but thrives.” “We are very sad to see Bernard go. Not just Red Ladder, but Leeds’ cultural and artistic landscape owes so much to this man”, said Rod Dixon, Artistic Director of Red Ladder. “As we transition out of NPO funding, with the highest profile and strongest body of work we’ve had under my eight years as Artistic Director, this

is set to be a new and exciting phase for the company. Tessa is a perfect match for us in many ways, and her dedication and enthusiasm is truly inspiring. The skills she is able to bring to the board are very welcome at this point in our development.”

hoenix Dance Theatre’s Mixed Programme 2015 features a double bill by Christopher Bruce, one of the most influential figures in world dance. It includes ‘Shadows’, a brand new work created especially for Phoenix Dance Theatre, and is a restaging of ‘Shift’, his energetic study of life in the 1940s. Having choreographed works for leading dance companies across the globe, this is the first time that Phoenix Dance Theatre will perform any of this renowned choreographer’s work.

The programme also features two world premieres

The programme also features two world premieres. Phoenix Artistic Director Sharon Watson follows up her audience favourites ‘Melt’ (2011) and ‘Repetition of Change’ (2013) with ‘TearFall’, a new work that builds on her exploration of science through dance using her mesmerizing, athletic choreographic style. The fourth piece is ‘Bloom’ by exciting New Adventures Choreographer Award winner Caroline Finn, whose work often presents darkly comic expressions of life and humanity in a playful, quirky and highly engaging choreographic style. www.phoenixdancetheatre.co.uk

he first year of a new Community Engagement Project at Opera North has been an unqualified success. Since the programme began there have been more than 2,480 attendances, and a further 774 attendances at special taster performances and workshops. A total of 72 different community groups in Leeds have become members of the scheme and enjoyed free or subsidised tickets to performances, including operas like La Bohème, La Traviata and The Coronation of

A total of 72 different community groups in Leeds have become members of the scheme

Poppea. Members also attended 23 events in the Howard Assembly Room, ranging from classical recitals to jazz, world music, talks and film screenings. The aim of the project, which is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, is to strengthen Opera North’s relationship with local communities and open up opera to a wider audience. The programme builds on Opera North’s strong track record in attracting ‘first-timers’ to the opera, with over 50% of

attendees at La Bohème in 2014 being new audience members. Initiatives have been put in place to tackle any barriers preventing groups from engaging with the company’s work, and taster performances and workshops are taking opera out into local communities. “Our constant aim is to fully engage with the many diverse communities here”, said Richard Mantle, General Director, Opera North. “I am delighted that in the first year of this project we have already seen significant numbers of people building a new relationship with the Company and our work. There is a very special atmosphere in the theatre when we have lots of new audience members - their pleasure in experiencing live opera for the very first time is palpable.”

rom 6th February – 5th July, The Hepworth Wakefield will present work by Greek-American artist and feminist icon Lynda Benglis. This will be the largest presentation of Benglis’ work in the UK, featuring approximately 50 works spanning her entire career. Born in 1941 in Louisiana, Lynda is one of America’s most significant living artists. She was heralded as the ‘heir to Pollock’ by Life magazine in 1970, and is part of a generation of artists who forged new approaches to sculpture and painting in the wake of Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Pop Art. She became famous not only for her radical re-envisioning of sculpture and painting using wax and poured latex, but also for her works dealing with feminist politics and self-image.

This exhibition explores the breadth of Benglis’ work, highlighting her desire to challenge the traditions of sculpture and painting, and exploring the physical dialogue between work and viewer. The Hepworth Wakefield, Gallery Walk, Wakefield, WF1 5AW. Tel: 01924 247360

Leeds Town Red Ladder Theatre Company brings a new musical comedy to City Varieties from 19th – 21st February. Written by ex-Chumbawamba guitarist and writer Boff Whalley, and directed by Red Ladder’s Artistic Director Rod Dixon, ‘We’re Not Going Back’ looks at the 1984/85 miners’ strike through the eyes of three headstrong sisters in a South Yorkshire pit village. The musical was commissioned by the North East, Yorkshire and Humberside regions of Unite the Union, and is performed by Victoria Brazier, Claire Marie Seddon and Stacey Sampson as Olive, Mary and Isabel – hit hard by the Government’s war against the miners and determined to set up a branch of Women Against Pit Closures. It’s February1984, and as the rumour mill stirs with developments of impending pit closures, the coal miners’ unions are drawn into a battle of attrition against an unbending government. Forced into poverty, miners and their families become part of a strike that will resonate through the coming decades. But for many people, the war fought between politicians, police and pickets took a back seat to the fight to hold families, friendships and community together – fought on the battleground of living room and soup kitchen, meeting hall and social club. It was a battle fought with laughter and songs, with kneesups, punch-ups and piss-ups. “Thirty years ago I was part of a miners’ strike support group in Leeds”, said Boff Whalley. “For me, the strongest part - the heart - of the miners’ strike was the family support, specifically the women. Despite the strike’s outcome, all the hardship and poverty, the main memory of that year for the women

was of laughter, fun and surprise - a big adventure. How to take on the machinery of the capitalist state; and have a good time doing it. I knew this feeling had to be the underlying belly of the play.”

It was a battle fought with laughter and songs

Last year, Red Ladder lost £160,000 of Arts Council funding. So a team of supporters started a campaign to save the UK’s leading radical theatre company. The #GisATenner campaign is based on the fact that if each Red Ladder Twitter follower gave £10, that would cover the full production budget of one UK tour! To donate, visit www. saveredladder.co.uk

The Food Academy, formerly housed on the top floor of the Flannels store on Vicar Lane, has a new home at Leeds City College’s Printworks Campus on Hunslet Road and, while it may not enjoy as much passing trade as before, it is now a destination spot well worth the short journey from the city centre. t the heart of Leeds City College’s culinary department, The Food Academy has the distinction of being the only restaurant in Leeds run entirely by students. If, however, you just read students as ‘amateur’ or ‘subpar’ then think again. The restaurant’s menu features inventive and considered dishes that can easily hold their own amongst the best our city’s finest eateries have to offer. The somewhat sparse and unassuming dining room strikes a comfortable balance, being neither too casual nor too swanky and the style of service is professional yet relaxed. Back of house, however, it seems there is no space for half measures or compromise; the focus is squarely on a diligent commitment to quality and it is with what appears on the plate where the Academy really shines. To start there was the Round Green Venison Carpaccio whose rich gaminess was cut through with tart rhubarb

Vegetarian options rarely come as robust and intensely flavoursome as the Winter Truffle Risotto

and a subtly sweet and smoky whiskey dressing. The Queenie Scallops were served with exceptionally light and fresh handmade linguini and sultana, pepper, courgette and ginger. The Mackerel Escabeche was a veritable festival of smoky flavours served as it was with smoked baby gem, tobacco apple and celeriac. Between courses the subtle

but tasty Winter Vegetable Broth was a perfect palette cleanser and then it was on to the mains. The Cider Braised Pork Belly brought out the best in the deliciously juicy and fatty cut of meat accentuated by the slightly coarsely textured homemade black pudding and offset with the fruitiness of rhubarb and apple. As for the vegetarian option, they rarely come as robust and intensely flavoursome as the Winter Truffle Risotto wherein the delectable pungency of the truffle combined with the sharpness of the Harrogate Blue croquettes and pickled Jerusalem artichoke to create a particularly heady taste

The Food Academy is a bona fide hidden gem which boasts some sensation. The Plate of Yorkshire Lamb was an outstanding triumvirate of cuts with succulently pink herb crusted rack, crispy belly and shoulder hot pot, complimented with a rich and tasty pearl barley stew and Vichy baby veg. Not only was every dish perfectly cooked and presented, we were also happy to find the portions quite substantial. To finish there was the gloriously rich Dark Chocolate Truffle with blood orange, pistachio cake and Greek yogurt, the Classic

Bread and Butter Pudding with clotted cream and apricot, and a delicious Iced Rhubarb Mousse with (deep fried!) cinnamon porridge. All in all, every aspect of our meal was superb and The Food Academy is a bona fide hidden gem which boasts some serious talent in the kitchen. I urge you to seek it out and pay this excellent restaurant a visit, you certainly won’t regret it! Based in the commercial wing at the Printworks Campus (123 Hunslet Road, LS10 1JY), it is a short stroll from Crown Point Shopping Park, Costco and the Royal Armouries. orty eight oak trees were recently planted in Meanwood Park in remembrance of the Meanwood men who fell in the Great War. This was the culmination of the Meanwood Men Project, which included a book about the men, their families and the impact their deaths had on Meanwood. The project also featured a plaque listing the men’s names on the War Memorial in Meanwood. This was made possible by the Heritage Lottery First World War Centenary Fund, whose grant of £7,500 was secured through the Meanwood Village Association. Over the past year, local resident Cynthia Ruston researched the lives of the men who fought and lost their lives in WW1. “When I started the names were quite meaningless to

It turned into a real labour of love. It was an honour to reveal their lives and the devastating impact that losing so many men had on Meanwood, which was a small village community at that time.” Today’s Meanwood community has been behind the project all the way, with many people turning out to plant the memorial avenue of trees, and for the book, which was fittingly launched at a Vintage Tea Dance on 21st December. Leeds Community Foundation (LCF) recently celebrated its 10th anniversary of grant giving. Over the past decade, thanks to the generosity of donors both large and small, LCF has distributed over £23m in grants to over 2,000 community organisations and has helped to transform the lives of thousands of people.

he work of the Leeds Community Foundation is all about finding people who have the financial resources to give, and creating links between them and the community projects that can use the money to best effect. Unfortunately, the local need continues to grow – last year alone, LCF received nearly twice as many applications as it could actually fund. To meet that demand, LCF launched the LCF Birthday Challenge which aims to raise money through a wide range of methods, encouraging as many people as possible to get involved. “Whether you can afford £10 or £10,000, the support you provide

can really help us increase our reach and continue to make a difference in Leeds”, said Sally-Anne Greenfield, LCF’s Chief Executive. During the celebration in December, over 20 pledges were made. They came from individuals, community groups and companies, and included offers to join the 100 Club, selecting LCF as Charity of the Year and two donations of £5,000! Horsforth on Track to Become Fairtrade Town The campaign for Horsforth to become a Fairtrade town started a year ago and has already met three out of the five goals required by the Fairtrade Foundation. ecoming a Fairtrade town involves thinking ethically about how we live and, in the process, helping others. The campaign is backed by both Horsforth Churches Together and Horsforth Town Council, who have been busy encouraging businesses, schools and individuals to commit to choosing Fairtrade products where possible.

“We always welcome new additions to our steering group”, said Matt Wright, Minister, Lister Hill Baptist Church. “We also need more local schools and businesses to declare their support for Fairtrade. We’re currently offering a free Fairtrade hamper to the business in Horsforth that drinks the most tea and tells us about it! “We plan for Horsforth to become a Fairtrade town in 2015 and want to thank all who have supported us so far. Headingley and Kirkstall councillors are pleased that, after much lobbying of Central Government, funding has been allocated to make Headingley Station fully accessible, with step free access onto both platforms for passengers.

If you would like to buy a brick for £50 or make a donation of any amount, please make cheques payable to ‘OPAL’, write your name, address and ‘Bedford Arms’ on the reverse of the cheque, and send it to OPAL, Unit 10, Holt Park District Centre, Leeds, LS16 7SR. ould you help OPAL – the charity Older People’s Action in the Locality, which supports the over 60s living in Cookridge, Ireland Wood, Tinshill, Holt Park, Adel and Bramhope – buy and transform the Bedford Arms pub on the corner of Silk Mill Drive and Bedford Drive into a LS16 Community Centre, owned and overseen by OPAL? OPAL urgently needs to raise £35,000 to secure the property before it is sold for development. For £50 you can ‘buy a brick’ and have your name, or the name of a loved one engraved on the brick. If they sell 700 bricks they will have secured the building!

Just buy a brick!

Obviously not everyone can afford £50, so any donation would be greatly appreciated. OPAL are busy making as many grant applications as possible, but the application process takes months and they could lose the chance of buying the building.

eadingley Development Trust (HDT) is a residentled, enterprise-based organisation with over 1,000 members, which delivers, brokers and supports a range of initiatives and services of benefit to the community in Headingley. In 2005 Headingley was identified by Sheffield Hallam University as having the weakest community bonds in England. The influx of students had unbalanced housing and the local economy. An estimated 80% of the population was transient, creating associated problems like antisocial behaviour and a lack of care for neighbours and the environment. HDT was created in response to this. The aim was to create a sustainable, healthy and balanced community, where people would want to live at all stages of their lives and achieve a good quality of life. With this in mind, it has delivered a wide variety of enterprises

and projects, all dependent on the energy and enthusiasm of its members, who contribute on a voluntary basis. These include: HEART – HDT’s flagship enterprise in a redundant primary school on Bennett Road, which was partly financed through a community share scheme. It opened in January 2011 and houses PULSE (flexible workspace), a cafe, meeting rooms, exhibition and performance space. It has become the hub for a wide variety of community activities and events and employs 15 staff (www.heartcentre. org.uk). Headingley Farmers’ Market began in 2007, providing an outlet for local producers. it quickly became an invaluable social space, featuring live music monthly and spawning enterprises like the Fowl Co-op, a community supported scheme providing organic, free range chickens, and Headingley Country Markets – a co-op of local bakers and cooks (www.headingleyfarmersmarket. com). Headingley Community Orchard identifies land where fruit trees and bushes can be planted. It is currently working on five sites, including at a local school and a major project at the edge of ancient woodland (www.headingleycommunityorchard. org.uk). Headingley Homes –was formed to bring more families back into the area, it manages three houses (owning one), which are let to long-term residents,

and seeks to influence housing policy and work constructively with other local bodies. Plus, there’s Films at HEART featuring monthly film screenings (www.heartcentre. org.uk/films-at-heart; Cafe Scientifique which organises speakers and discussions on scientific topics and, in 2008, HDT sponsored the buy-out of the Natural Food Store on North Lane, which is now a thriving independent co-operative . HDT is always on the lookout for new ways whereby collective enterprise can contribute to the wellbeing of Headingley. It provides the space and support for new projects to emerge to meet the changing needs of the community and is always keen for new members to get involved and bring their ideas to the table. t a f f, st u d e n t s a n d governors from Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College celebrated its 25th anniversary in December with a Mass at Leeds Cathedral followed by dinner at the college itself. Catholic education has been provided on this site since 1898, when the Sisters of Notre Dame came to Leeds. In 1904, what is now the Sixth Form College was built and opened as Notre Dame Collegiate School for Girls. In 1978 the school became the Notre Dame High School, a catholic comprehensive school for pupils aged 13 to 18, with around 650 girls. When Catholic education in Leeds was restructured in

1989, the school became the sixth form college for Leeds Catholic high schools, and also became co-educational. It now educates almost 1,900 16 to 19 year olds from a wide variety of schools across Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford and beyond, making it ten times larger than the average Leeds sixth form, and provides qualifications in over 30 subjects. Previous notable students include BBC sports presenter Gabby Logan, Professor of Planetary and Space Sciences at the Open University Monica Grady and Alicia Blagg, diving bronze medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

We make it easy...

Over 300 staff, governors and students celebrated the occasion, including three past principals of the college. Several students provided entertainment. “December 8th was a special day for a special college”, said Terry Coen, Principal. “It was wonderful that so many current and past students, staff and governors could join us to give thanks for the last 25 years and to celebrate our community - a community which we hope will continue to provide excellent education for the young people of Leeds and surrounding areas for many years to come.” Pictured: Members of the English Department - Sarah Birkett, Christine Cox, Kath Owen and Mark Anderson enjoying the celebrations.

Greg Mulholland MP joined hundreds of local residents, and the Cookridge Residents Action Group (CRAG) in objecting to the original proposal by Taylor Wimpey to build 200 houses in October 2013, and the second application in August 2014, objecting to the development on the grounds that local infrastructure is insufficient to support the increase in population new housing would

Greg supported the Cookridge Residents Action Group (CRAG) saying the site should not be allocated for housing at all due to the risk of flooding. “Local infrastructures including school and medical services would not have been able to cope with the increase in population that the proposed development would have brought, and there was also serious concern of increased flooding”, said Greg. “Cookridge Residents Action Group and local residents have worked extremely hard to ensure that their concerns and opposition to the application were listened too.”

A report to planners said that outline planning permission should be refused as it would cause harm “to the amenity of the neighbouring residents on Moseley Wood Rise”. The report also highlighted the problem of accessing the site. Their decision is a relief to the local community due to real concern of increased flooding of the Moseley Wood Beck if the new development were to

y next Summer, Leeds C h i l d r e n ’s Charity (previously known as Leeds Children’s Holiday Camp Association and Silverdale) will have helped 60,000 youngsters from around Leeds. To celebrate this milestone, it is appealing for people who were helped by the charity as children to get in touch and share their memories. LCC runs a respite centre for disadvantaged children in Silverdale, Lancashire, where over 500 children every year enjoy a week by the seaside. The aim is to collate their memories into a

It is also planning to hold a reunion and would like as many people as possible to attend. “There must be people who made lifelong friends during their breaks, or who learned new skills or were given inspiration that made a lasting impact on their lives”, said Verlie McCann, LCC Chairman. “We would love to find out what our children are doing now as adults and help people understand the work the charity does.” If you have memories to share, contact Verlie McCann on 0113 245 4281 or info@ leedschildrenscharity.org.uk

s a result of our consultations, we have now set out key policies for the Neighbourhood Plan. Our Vision for Adel is to build on our ancient history and ensure that future developments define, protect and enhance Adel as a modern settlement, known for its landscape, green spaces and gardens, together with the character of its buildings. The quality of our amenities and education provision will also be major priorities, which will help to strengthen our sense of community. Excellent accessibility to the city will be increasingly important for economic and social benefits. The Plan will cover the design,

layout, character and mix of proposed housing. We recognise that more housing is required and have supported, in principle, cases where brown field sites have been proposed. However we are opposed to development on green field sites. Education and the lack of primary school places to meet new demands, and traffic problems arising from new and proposed developments are important issues that will be addressed. The impact of additional housing on the community has identified issues such as the need for children’s play provision, the absence of a Community Centre, and the need for additional GP provision. Our environment and heritage policies will include: - Identifying Adel as a green gateway to Leeds through large tree planting on wide grass verges, and improvements to the character and appearance of the retail frontages on Otley Road; - Creating a network of green links between the open areas in and around Adel through new foot and

cycle paths that connect Adel to a city-wide network; - Protecting the setting of heritage buildings such as Adel Parish Church and features like Long Causeway, Scotland Mill and other important historical elements. It is hoped that The Plan will become a statutory document and the Forum will have to be consulted by anyone wishing to undertake development in Adel. The Leeds and District National Trust Association celebrated its fortieth anniversary in December with a meeting attended by more than 150 members. he Association’s President, Honorary Alderman Bernard Atha CBE, presided and recounted how in 1894 three undistinguished individuals decided to set up an organisation to save our heritage. “Who would have thought”, he said, “that more than one hundred years later the initiative of these three individuals would have led to an organisation which owns and protects vast areas of land, some of the most beautiful coastline in the country, innumerable stately homes, historic buildings, castles, and ancient monuments, and now employs 5,000 individuals and deploys an estimated 30,000 volunteers. “Forty years ago, a small number of individuals met at Leeds University to form an association to play its part in supporting this great organisation. Originally called ‘The Mid Yorkshire Centre’, the name was subsequently changed to the Leeds and District Association of the National Trust.” The Leeds organisation makes donations every year to local National Trust properties. As there are none in the Metropolitan District of Leeds, donations are made to sites such as Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks and East Riddlesden Hall. The Leeds Association also organises visits to National Trust and other properties and has an interesting lecture programme. In an era when opportunities for social contacts are reducing, the Association offers people the opportunity to socialise and work

together on a common interest. The fortieth celebration was organised by the secretary of the Association, who for ten years has organised the Coffee Mornings that have raised over £3,000. A magnificent celebration cake, made by Christine Harrap, was ceremonially cut by Christine, Jane Pronay and Pamela Fishwick (one of the members who set up the Association 40 years ago). eadingley Neighbourhood Forum is now preparing a plan for Headingley Neighbourhood Area. The Forum and its Steering Group have both held meetings, and agreed the basic structure of the Plan.

The Group is focussing on consultation, from which the content of the plan will be developed. The first phase took place last Summer, consisting of a public meeting and a questionnaire, which asked about people’s hopes, fears and aspirations for Headingley. From these responses, we have drafted a vision ‘to develop a sustainable, inclusive and mixed community in Headingley’.

Based on this, we have identified a number of objectives, such as promoting a balanced community, developing diverse housing, preserving our built heritage and greenspace, encouraging a sustainable economy, and so on. These are the subjects of the second phase of consultation, in which we offer the opportunity for input to everyone who lives, works or carries out business in our area. We will then move on to phase three, and consider options for the plan. These will be carried out by means of planning policies in some cases, and by nonplanning projects in others. A workshop on Headingley’s

If you live or work in the area, you can contribute in a number of ways. As Winter wears on and our evenings become a little lighter the whole cycle of growth begins again. Sweet Peas Seed sowing is my favourite garden activity of all, and although February seems very early, it is in fact the preferred time for sowing sweet peas in the North of England. They can be sown into good potting compost with plenty of space. Sow one seed to a 9cm pot or six to a 15cm pot and place them in a cold frame or greenhouse, covered with a sheet of newspaper, which you can remove when they germinate. If hard frosts are forecast they may need a little extra protection in the form of newspaper or horticultural fleece. Once the seedling has

Trees in the Garden The cool winter months are the best time of year to plant new trees. Your choice of tree should be made with great care to ensure it will not outgrow its space, and will provide you with plenty of interest through the year. Some excellent small trees include Acer ‘Sango kaku’ or Coral Bark Maple. With its striking red bark to enjoy in Winter and beautiful fresh green foliage,

it reaches around six metres in height. The Amelanchier is also a good choice offering white Spring flowers followed by red berries and wonderful leaf colour in Autumn. Amelanchier x grandiflora ‘Ballerina’ reaches around six metres and is a lovely variety, suitable for most gardens. I love the Mountain Ash, Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ which is a little taller, reaching up to 10 metres and producing the most amazing red Autumn foliage. Glowing amber coloured berries adorn the bare branches well into Winter.

The Veg Plot Rhubarb can be covered over with a large upturned pot to ’force’ it so that you have delicious early pink stems to enjoy. You can also begin to ‘chit’ your seed potatoes – which simply means leaving them on a cool windowsill to form small shoots before you plant them out.

Surveying your lawn these days is not a pleasant occupation – after all the rain it is a sad sight and may even represent more of a moss pit than a lawn! And there is probably more bad weather on the way. What should you do? Pictured: David Lawless

e spoke to David Lawless, who runs Green Thumb North and North West Leeds, to find out what the experts say. “Lawn care can start at any time of the year”, he told us. “We continue to care for lawns throughout the Winter months – scarifying to remove thatch build up and aerating to relieve compaction. This allows the lawn to absorb the water, oxygen and nutrients needed to encourage deep root growth and sustain a healthy lawn. Club The regular live music events at the New Headingley Club (56 St Michael’s Road, Headingley), have their roots in blues, folk, country and jazz. They’ve been running on the last Friday of each month for over four years, bringing a great variety of established artistes - both local and others on national tour. Periodically they put on fresh, local, younger talent. Now, to assist Paul Connor who returns after a brief sabbatical, a new team is set to find great new music for you, including Sally Coe who has close connections to the Breeze youth events run in Leeds during the Summer and is passionate about opportunities for the most talented. The ‘New Roots’ gig on 27th February includes two great performers – Tim Loud, whose album was reviewed in the December issue where he was rated a tireless and talented artist performing well written songs with aplomb and an undertone of unpredictability; and Dylan, whose fresh lyrics and sound secured his place amongst the winners of Breeze Has Talent 2013. Since then he has continually been gaining accolades through live performance and radio exposure. A fantastic night is in store!

he Grammy nominated Godfathers of alternative cabaret are back on tour with a show celebrating 25 years of dark and deviant theatrics and will be at The City Varieties on Tuesday 17th March at 7.30pm. With an international reputation for being the foremost avant-garde band in the world, Olivier award winners The Tiger Lillies never cease to surprise, shock and entertain with their inimitable musical style, conjuring up the macabre magic of pre-war Berlin and fusing it with the savage edge of punk.

They create a truly extraordinary atmosphere – a sort of dark gypsy cabaret

The Tiger Lillies attracted mainstream recognition for composing the music and starring in the junk opera Shockheaded Peter and recently won rave reviews with their new shows The Ancient Mariner and Lulu - A Murder Ballad. ‘They create a truly extraordinary atmosphere on stage – a sort of dark gypsy cabaret shimmering with menace. The music is also gorgeously beautiful, tender and delicate – although the sweetness is almost always followed by outrageously funny or horrible twist. It is hard to

do justice to the dark, poetic brilliance of The Tiger Lillies, so the best thing I can advise is that you seek out a ticket for this glorious show’ **** (The Scotsman)

Album Review:

The Big Easy – Get Rhythm in Your Feet

With this album of covers The Big Easy are here to show you a swinging good time and do so with a no messing, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it approach to vintage arrangements. What we have here is unpretentious, popular jazz/blues that’s all too easy to get on board with and features ensemble performances and soloing with an open-hearted, playful quality that confidently does justice to these much loved classics.

An Evening of Inter-Celtic Music Celebrating the musical crossover between Ireland and Northumberland, Irish Arts Foundation presents an evening of Inter-Celtic Music on Saturday 7th February, 8.15pm at Inkwell on Potternewton Lane, LS7. The evening will feature Gemma Irving (singer/ guitarist), Ian Pearson (fiddle), Des Hurley (fiddle), Chris O’Malley (keyboards) and Dave Wood (guitar) … plus special guests.

Gemma and Ian are gaining a following on the Leeds scene As the group’s name implies, The Big Easy’s sound is infused with the spirit of New Orleans as evidenced on a rendition of Minnie The Moocher, which begins languidly before erupting into a double time swing frenzy, a horn led O’ When The Saints with intertwining baritone sax and trumpet and an irresistibly jaunty take on Horace Silver’s The Preacher. The admirably cherry-picked selection of tunes on offer here also includes Ray Charles’ Hallelujah I Love Her So and, a personal favourite, Is You Is? by Louis Jordan. Over thirteen tracks this sunny side up set is unashamedly feel-good and carefree and while the playing is extremely accomplished throughout, the

instrumentation is laid down with an easy, nonchalant air even in the midst of sometimes dizzyingly complex piano or guitar solos. Get Rhythm In Your Feet is a fine recording indeed and a satisfying listen which leaves one eager to hear the band perform live. Fortunately, an opportunity to do so is afoot! The launch gig for the album is on Saturday 31st January at Seven Arts, Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton, 8pm. You can also catch The Big Easy at Friends of Ham in Leeds every other Sunday.

Originally from the North East, Gemma and Ian are gaining a following on the Leeds unplugged scene. They are joined by established local musicians Des, Chris and Dave, to present a selection of traditional tunes from the world of Celtic music. Tickets £8/£6 on the door or via www.eventbrite.co.uk/ For further information, contact 0113 278 7442 or info@irisharts.org.uk

It would be easy to dismissively prejudge Foxcatcher as quintessential Oscar-bait, bearing as it does the hallmarks of those self-consciously worthy pictures that tend to appear in the run up to awards season. And while the film does have the unhurried pace, overall air of gravitas and an attention grabbing central performance by an actor ‘as you’ve never seen them before’ playing out of their comfort zone, Foxcatcher is a good deal more than your typical, cynical statue-grab and is in fact a compelling true life tale expertly told. The story concerns Olympic wrestling brothers, Mark and Dave Schultz, both gold medal winners, and the bizarre and ultimately tragic chain of events set in motion when the younger sibling, Mark (Channing Tatum) is approached by the eccentric heir to the Du Pont dynasty, John Du Pont (Steve Carrell). Mark is summoned to Du Pont’s opulent, palatial family home where the multimillionaire lays out his proposition; Mark and his brother are to join him at his family’s Foxcatcher farm with its state-of-the-art training facility and as their patron, benefactor, coach and mentor Du Pont will lead the US Olympic wrestling team to victory at Seoul ’88. While Mark is ready to jump at the opportunity Dave (Mark Ruffalo), settled into family life, requires more convincing.

tension that builds to its shocking denouement

What follows is an engrossing drama of shifting loyalties and alliances played out with mounting tension that builds to its shocking denouement. What makes Foxcatcher so riveting is the exploration

of the relationship dynamic between the Schultz brothers and Du Pont, with each of these characters fully realised in excellent performances by the three leads. The fraught fraternal bond between Mark and Dave is palpably evoked and a real sense of history is conveyed. Much has been made of Steve Carrell’s transformative, very creepy turn as Du Pont and deservedly so. Barely recognisable under nasal prosthetics and an ashen pallor, with an odd, halting manner of speech, Carrell’s Du Pont is portrayed as a man alienated by wealth, socially awkward, profoundly lonely and given to seething resentment. The approval he seeks from his aloof mother (played by Vanessa Redgrave) eludes him and, while he would like to

imagine himself as a leader of men, he lacks the qualities required to make it so. This is key in the antipathy he develops towards Dave who, as a celebrated sportsman and inspirational figure, has the admiration and devotion of his team. Director Bennett Miller presents this story with a masterful touch. Shot with a muted colour palette and subdued in tone, the film is a slow burn which is devastatingly effective. M i l l e r has also succeeded in coaxing absolutely o u t s t a n d i n g performances from Carrell, Tatum and Ruffalo. Foxcatcher is the real deal, a big, serious important movie that genuinely has the goods. Whatever nods it receives come Oscar night will be well earned.

Following personal experience of the importance of organ donation, two musicians team up to raise awareness

ast year, singer Jen Armstrong’s friend Rex ‘s mother was seriously ill and required life-saving transplant surgery. She had been on the waiting list for over a year and all he could do was watch as she gradually deterioriated. That watching and waiting is so frustrating – you are helpless, desperate to do something but unable to do anything…..just wait for a suitable donor. Thanks to Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the generosity of someone who had registered as a donor, she received that lifesaving operation just in time. As both Jen and Rex are musicians, they decided to create a piece of music, put it on YouTube, and campaign to raise awareness of the importance of donor registration. Their striking and emotional video

Time was also spent in the public galleries of the House of Commons, where they were fortunate enough to hear both David Cameron delivering a

Two of the girls were particularly keen to learn more and Krina Patel and Tara Mogridge were delighted when, on the train back to Leeds, they received an email from Rachel Reeves inviting them to shadow her for a day or two, in London or Leeds, to get a feel for life in politics. Organiser, Ruth Dass, was presented with a Prime Minister’s Points of Light award, which recognises outstanding individuals who are making a difference in their communities and inspiring others.

The winner in each age group won £500 for their school, a visit from author Sam Hay to read the winning story in an assembly, and a goodie bag worth £50 for themselves.

We have been bowled over by the quality of the stories and the imagination of the children

“This story is written in a punchy style that keeps you wanting to know more”, said Sam Hay. “It’s a great story that really shows off the imagination and creativity of its writer.” “We have been bowled over by the quality of the stories and the imagination of the children”, said Ian Cowley, managing director of cartridgesave.co.uk. “We’d like to thank everyone who took part.” The top 50 entries are available in a lovely, freeto-download e-book at www.cartridgesave.co.uk/ writechristmas

Thelma Wilson from Guide Dogs recently visited The Froebelian School in Horsforth, bringing with her two guide dogs, Alma and Rhoda, and accepting a cheque for £5,400, which the children had raised for the charity. Thelma led a special assembly where she talked about the important work done by the charity. The children now have the opportunity to name their very own Guide Dog puppy and will get regular updates on the puppy’s progress, as it trains to become a real guide dog. Guide Dogs transform the lives of blind and partially sighted people. It costs £5,000 to raise each guide dog and the lifetime cost of a guide dog is nearly £50,000. As each guide dog owner may have up to eight guide dogs during their lifetime, this requires a lot of fundraising.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
