As I write this, it seems as though everyone is hurtling towards Christmas! Happily, at NLL Towers it’s already January and time to think about New Year resolutions and how to inject new purpose and fun into the coming year. We have a few suggestions. First of all, why not take a look at the huge range of courses available around Leeds? From languages to film, art to childcare, computing, cake decoration, and local history – you’ll find it all. Or, decide to get fit by taking up one of St Gemma’s great challenges or a more unusual sport. We also have news of exhibitions and successful community campaigns.

BENJAMIN GOTT (1762-1840)

MERCHANT, INDUSTRIALIST, PATRON OF THE ARTS It comes as a shock to find an empty space now in Wellington Street where the chunky, concrete Yorkshire Post building stood so recently, a familiar landmark to thousands of passing motorists. Fifty years ago another iconic building stood here, also swept away in the name of modernisation, though after a much longer existence. This was Benjamin Gott’s huge Bean Ing Mill, the first and largest of the Leeds woollen mills and famous in its day throughout Europe. Benjamin Gott revolutionised the production of woollen cloth and put Leeds on the map as a textile centre. In the process he made a fortune, building a great house and park and sponsoring buildings and works of art that remain part of the city’s heritage. Born in Calverley in 1762, he came

Lynda Benglis at The Hepworth Wakefield rom 6th February – 5th July, The Hepworth Wakefield will present work by Greek-American artist and feminist icon Lynda Benglis. This will be the largest presentation of Benglis’ work in the UK, featuring approximately 50 works spanning her entire career. Born in 1941 in Louisiana, Lynda is one of America’s most significant living artists. She was heralded as the ‘heir to Pollock’ by Life magazine in 1970, and is part of a generation of artists who forged new approaches to sculpture and painting in the wake of Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Pop Art. She became famous not only for her radical re-envisioning of sculpture and painting using wax and poured latex, but also for her works dealing with feminist politics and self-image.

This exhibition explores the breadth of Benglis’ work, highlighting her desire to challenge the traditions of sculpture and painting, and exploring the physical dialogue between work and viewer. The Hepworth Wakefield, Gallery Walk, Wakefield, WF1 5AW. Tel: 01924 247360

Before being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009 (although she had never smoked!), Julie was Head of Art at Allerton High School – in fact she had taught there for 35 years! She was treated in the Bexley Wing and cannot sing their praises highly enough. Since then she has been a dedicated fundraiser for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre. Julie has exhibited all over the country and her paintings have made their way all over the world. Her last exhibition virtually sold out! She is hoping this one will generate the same amount of interest, as the hospital will benefit so much from it.

oundhay artist Julie Barnham will be ex h i b i t i n g h e r l a t e s t paintings at The Atrium, Bexley Wing, St James’s University Hospital until 31st January, and 25% of all sales will be donated to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre. This is Julie’s second exhibition at the Atrium. The theme is journeys and the pieces relate to her travels over the last two years. Many depict scenes from the Hebrides where she spent time road biking across the islands, and some are of Bali where she taught English to children in a very poor village for three months.

Opera North is offering people the opportunity to delve into the heart of one of Mozart’s best-loved works, The Marriage of Figaro, with a series of preperformance talks. tarting with a special ‘Inside Opera’ event on Friday 30th January, members of the cast and creative team will give a unique insight into the new production. The discussion will be chaired by Dr Kara McKechnie, Lecturer in Dramaturgy and Literary Management at the University of Leeds, and author of ‘Opera North: Historical and Dramaturgical Perspectives on Opera Studies’, a beautifully illustrated study of the Company. In addition, most performances will be preceded by a talk. Chorus Manager Steven Phillips will set the scene for the evening’s performance, with insights into both the work itself and Opera North’s new production. The story is set on Figaro’s wedding day, when he discovers that his master, the Count, is in pursuit of his bride, Susanna. The Countess is heartbroken by her husband’s infidelity – but is

It’s one of Mozart’s most tender, funny and heart-warming works – from the moment the famous overture sets the scene for its comic misadventures. The cast includes baritone Richard Burkhard as Figaro, and Norwegian soprano Silvia Moi as Susanna. Quirijn de Lang and Ana Maria Labin are the Count and Countess, while Australian mezzo soprano Helen Sherman sings the ‘trouser role’ of the page boy Cherubino. The Marriage of Figaro is at Leeds Grand Theatre on 24 & 30 January; 5, 11, 17, 21 & 27 February. Cooking is an important life skill. Unfortunately, it has been diluted over the years. This is why Love Food Hate Waste has set out to enrich our culinary skills and help fight food waste.

ccording to research carried out by Love Food Hate Waste and Mumsnet, over 90% of parents rate cooking skills as an important part of education, yet 60% (with children over the age of three) spend three hours or less a month cooking with their children. Nearly 40% of people said that the time it takes to prespare a meal is one of the most important things they consider - which often means foregoing homemade meals. Not only can a lack of food knowledge and cooking skills have a negative impact on our health, but having these skills can also save us money and help to reduce

household food waste. To regain a lost generation of cooks, Love Food Hate Waste recently launched ‘Save More’ kitchen skills packs to help people get to grips with budgeting, planning, and portioning in the kitchen, along with money saving tools and tips. The pack is available to download from www. lovefoodhatewaste.com. In March the campaign is also launching free cookery classes in Leeds to help people with the basics of cookery and learn new ways to get creative in the kitchen. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste. By adopting

some easy, practical habits we can all waste less food, which will ultimately benefit both our purses and the environment. For free Love Food Hate Waste training in Leeds contact Cheryl Woodruff at Cheryl.Woodruff@ wrap.org.uk. Currently, sessions are planned for 26th January at Public Health Resource Centre, Tech North, Harrogate Road LS7 3NB, and 18th February at Oakwood Lane Practice, 2 Amberton Terrace, LS8 3BZ. More will common stream as interest increases.

Having been open for less than a year, this understatedly stylish tapas and pintxo bar in Granary Wharf has a growing reputation for food excellence but still seems to be a well kept secret on the Leeds culinary scene. Located under a railway arch, Bilbao is nicely kitted out, managing to overcome the aircraft hanger quality these structures sometimes have. The result is a stylish, intimate, informal space. he ethos of Bilbao is to combine elements of traditional Basque cuisine with the popular tapas of southern Spain and this fusion creates a unique and very special dining experience. We began with a very generous half potion of charcuterie selection including Iberico ham, so flavoursome and almost creamy in texture, and some delicious anchovies in sherry vinegar with perfectly tart saltiness. Deciding sharing a number of tapas dishes is the way to go we were advised that three per person would suffice. Something of an understatement, the amount of food we ended up with was more than ample but we weren’t complaining! We could probably have managed with a little less food but it was all so damn tasty we were unable to stop ourselves. Perhaps it’s the Basque influence, or the bar’s contemporary twist on traditional dishes, but the tapas here is often a little different to what you’d expect. The Patatas Bravas, for instance, were not the familiar tomato sauce smothered potato cubes but rather thin, slightly crispy potato slices drizzled with aioli and the enigmatic and piquant ‘Atomica’ sauce. Likewise, the Crispy Ribs

in sticky sauce defied expectation by arriving with the meat removed from the bone and compacted into an arrangement akin to a terrine and dressed, not drenched, with that

wonderfully rich sticky sauce. The dish had an intense, slightly smoky flavour and was incredibly moreish. While we couldn’t help being slightly dismayed that the Spicy Chorizo cooked in cider was unavailable (the meat eaters among us being full blown chorizo fiends) the abundance of deliciousness we received swiftly put paid to any sense of disappointment. The fillet of Cod with Vizcaian sauce had a delicate flavour with a melt-in-the-mouth consistency. Calamari, so often disappointing, was lightly tempura battered with a soft, yielding chewiness, topped

with a smattering of crispy fried onions and served with garlic mayo - simply squid perfection. Another highlight was the Avocado, King Prawn and Smoked Salmon Tartar, so fresh and light, it elicited a chorus of almost obscene groans of pleasure! The lovely Goats Cheese Salad with nuts, caramelised apples and rosemary had a superbly well judged combination of flavours with just the right amount of sweetness. By the time the Potatoes with Egg and Spanish Black Pudding arrived we were starting to think we may have overdone it, but we felt compelled to continue. This was certainly a more hearty, healthy portion, rich and filling and, I imagine, would be an ideal hangover remedy. While Bilbao’s food is irresistible, the bar also boasts a

very impressive drinks menu and it would be worth stopping in just to sample some of the tipples they have on offer. As we were there for the eats, we slaked our thirst with a couple of pints of Estrella and complemented our meal with the silky smooth Luberri Carbonic Maceration Tempranillo Rioja. Between us we shared a couple of desserts; the Cheesecake Bilbao Style which had slightly more coarse texture than one is used to (rustic, I guess you’d call it) and the Spanish Sponge Cake layered with custard, cream and caramelised sugar. Both were delicious but, not having much

of a sweet tooth myself and reeling from the considerable prior indulgence, I only managed a couple of forkfuls of each before slumping back in my seat in defeat. Overall, there wasn’t a bum note all evening – from the pleasant ambience, to the service and the individual qualities of everything we tasted, the entire experience was fantastic. Ridiculously good and yet reasonably priced, Bilbao Bar is a resounding success and I’d urge you hurry down there while it remains slightly under the radar of the Leeds foodnoscenti, I can see it becoming oversubscribed before too very long.

Work on the restoration of Oakwood Clock is due to start in January and should be completed in time for Oakwood Day – 2nd May 2015. akwood Traders and Residents Association (OTRA) recently completed their negotiations with Leeds City Council, and the contract has finally been awarded. OTRA decided that, as well as restoring the clock, the area surrounding it should also be upgraded – ensuring that it was fit for both the restored clock, and as the location for Oakwood Farmers’ Market and various community festivals throughout the year. As part of the redesign, people are being given the opportunity to purchase paving stones which can carry an inscription of the purchaser’s choice.

The Heritage Lottery funded part of the project also involved the creation of a new website which will help raise the awareness of the heritage of the area. This currently carries articles about the area’s heritage and will be further developed to include recordings of people recounting their memories of the area. In due course there will also be a heritage trail so people can explore the area on foot. The Oakwood and District Historical Society has provided invaluable assistance, as have David and Sharon Donaldson from Oakwood Church, whose website will take

Although started to ensure that the clock was not lost to the community, OTRA is keen to promote community activities. It has already organised two successful ‘Clock Rock and Two Empty Barrels’ and the recent Roundhay and Oakwood Festival, and earlier this year it hosted the first Oakwood Day beneath the Clock. Alwoodley Ward Happy 2015 and I hope it’s a good one for all of us. You may remember, last month I mentioned the Community Conversation dinners we are currently holding across the ward. These are an opportunity for councillors and local residents to meet and

Roundhay Ward Recycling I often wonder what happens to the waste that goes in our green bins and, in the approach to Christmas, I was pleased to join a recent visit to the Leeds Waste Recycling facility. My first impression was of the scale and noise of the operation. Dust carts driving in and dumping their loads looked small in the surroundings, especially as JCB diggers moved in behind them at high speed to scoop material straight into the process. Large conveyor belts took the raw material straight into the multi-stage separation. The second impression was of the degree of automation. There was blowing, shaking, and electro-magnetism, as well as some manual sorting, before the end product was squeezed into large

2015 will be an interesting year for a whole host of reasons. We will hopefully see work commence (and possibly even nearly complete) on the new King Lane Medical Centre that so many in Alwoodley and Moortown have been awaiting. Work will also continue apace within the city, in allocating land for the 70,000 new homes those running the Council have determined need to be built within the next 15 years. There is no question that in a vibrant, dynamic and growing city like Leeds, new houses are needed (whether we need 70,000

bales, including paper, plastics, aluminium, and other types of metal. The aluminium separation was particularly impressive with a violently shaking machine tipping material onto a fast moving conveyor before the electro magnets finished the process. A particular issue was glass which should not go into green bins, and which can contaminate whole loads. While the machines are designed to separate any that has got into the system at the beginning, no process can be perfect. Large scale landfill disposal costs council tax payers dear. Apart from the direct costs of managing landfill, councils currently pay £80 per ton landfill tax. There is also the local disruption that goes with sites, even once closed and re-landscaped. And methane - a potent greenhouse gas - may need

is a political debate that I would not dream of re-running here). What is clear is that no ward in Leeds will be unaffected by the need to build these new homes, nonetheless we remain committed to ensuring that where potential sites are brought forward, they are in the right place and that Alwoodley’s green spaces are protected for the future. This is the job that Neil, Peter and I have been actively, and so far successfully, engaged in over the past 18 months – there is no question that as the process comes to a close in the next 12 months we have our work very much cut out for us. For any and all local queries your Alwoodley councillors are always here to help.

Fantastic Response to Charity Appeal Leeds Children’s Charity was inundated with a mountain of food as a result of generous donations from primar y schools across the city. The food will provide a vital supplement to the catering requirements at Silverdale, the charity’s purpose-built centre overlooking Morecambe Bay, which provides hundreds of children from across Leeds with a holiday each year. For 2015, the 110-year old charity is gearing up to provide

These aids are tuned for each child’s specific hearing loss and can be retuned to suit their developing needs. Better hearing will lead to improved education, speech and social skills. This, allied to progress in English and IT (thanks to support from Roundhay Rotary who funded an IT room at the school), is providing a real boost to the pupils’ education. Earlier this year, Headingley resident Dianne Ward (Hearing Aid Project Co-Ordinator) asked the Hear the World Foundation for support and it responded by supplying a further 175 new aids! “It was wonderful to witness the moments when the children’s new hearing aids were programmed. ritten in 1965, ‘Relatively Speaking’ was originally conceived when Scarborough’s late great Stephen Joseph asked Ayckbourn to write a play which would simply make people laugh! At the London Premiere in1967 it enjoyed rave reviews and launched Ayckbourn as one of the most prolific and popular writers of comedy drama in the modern era. Between 1970 and 2000 there was at least one, and sometimes as many as five, Ayckbourn plays being performed every year in the West End. The setting for ‘Relatively Speaking’ is the Swinging 60s, when Britain was in the grip of

a cultural and pop revolution with Beatle mania at its height. The play is a comedy about relationships, infidelity and misunderstandings where Ayckbourn fully exposes the genteel politeness of the British middle class. He was able to do this thanks largely to the imprecision of the English language and the peculiar reticence endemic to British culture, which encourages the sort of mistaken-identity plotting Ayckbourn has mastered, and which leaves largely unspoken the painful truths of his characters’ lives.

Abbey Upholstery in Cookridge has been operating for nearly 40 years. Originally set up by Tom and Mary Burke as newly weds in the basement of their first home, it has grown year on year to become a thriving repair, upholstery and retail operation. ow daughter Karen, armed with a degree in furniture design, years of experience in furniture retail and, of course, an intensive Abbey apprenticeship dating back to school days, joins the business on a permanent basis. “I decided it was time to step aside and make way for youth and dynamism!” said Tom. “Of course I’ll still be around – my own father worked in the business into his 80s! But I don’t intend to stretch it that far. Karen’s experience adds new skills that will take the business into the future.” Today Abbey can handle jobs as small as a single castor repair, up to reupholstering an entire hotel, and everything in between. The highly experienced team includes skills like woodcarving and both traditional and modern polishing. A separate retail division deals specifically with high seat chairs (www.highseatchairs.co.uk) – ideal for those with back problems or in post-operative recovery. service throughout the UK “I was brought up in this business and I love it”, said Karen. “This is where I earned my first pocket money! I know it inside out and I’m determined that the business continues on an upward trajectory. “Every year I attend the big NEC furniture show to get a feel for current trends. All the big names exhibit – like Parker Knoll, Ercol, Vale Bridgecraft, Durestra – which all helps me to guide people when we are recovering furniture from the same manufacturer, the shapes don’t change too much, it’s more the fabrics. And, we have access to thousands of fabrics that are not available to the public. Choosing fabrics to complement what people already have and helping to coordinate pieces with other furniture can be really enjoyable.” Karen has recently designed a range of children’s headboards to be launched in January. They feature lovely castles, princess crowns, train engines, toys and animals. Under the name KAOA Designs, they were developed in Abbey’s workshops and will be manufactured locally, creating new jobs. The support offered is centred around helping people to develop ways of coping, being more in control and finding ways to overcome stress, anxiety and low mood.” For further information, visit www.LeedsIAPT.com

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown & Roundhay areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

PARKOUR/FREE RUNNING LACROSSE hen you see some of the top Parkour practitioners performing you might not believe that it is basically a movement discipline for all abilities and fitness levels. We were assured by Jim Key of Singlebound that that is exactly what it is. “It’s about learning to move efficiently”, he told us. “It’s full body training the fun way and is great for overall health and fitness. We learn an almost infinite variety of movements to run, jump, climb and vault over the obstacles around us in order to improve our strength, fitness, coordination and general physical ability. Run by Jim and Dale Annous, two of the very first qualified Parkour coaches in the UK, Singlebound runs a variety of indoor and outdoor classes for all ages (including a new class for adult beginners), nearly every day of the week, mainly at Pudsey Gym Magic. For further information, visit www.singlebound.co.uk

Leeds Penguins Lacrosse Club is based at the Adel Sports and Social Club, Church Lane, Adel LS16 8DE, where they both train and play matches. They train on Mondays from 7.15 to 9pm on the astro turf pitches and matches are on Saturdays at 2pm. Leeds Penguins play in the Northern Women’s League against teams from across the north of England – mostly from Manchester and Cheshire but they go as far as Newcastle and the Wirral. The season runs from September to March and they also play fun summer tournaments in the off season. The club currently has a ladies first team, but is planning to start a ladies development team and always welcomes new players (experienced internationals or complete newcomers!) to the sport. THE ULTIMATE CHOICE!

TCHOUKBALL

ltimate is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of players the world over. A fast-moving team sport, its unique features are that it is played with a flying disc, and there are no referees!

choukball is a fast paced game, invented in the 1970s by Herman Brandt, a Swiss biologist who wanted to create a sport that would keep people relatively injury free.

It is easy for newcomers to pickup and there are competitions at all levels of ability. The rules are simple but the strategies are complex. You can have as many players as you want on your squad, but only seven can be on the pitch at any one time. Players make their own foul calls and settle disputes according to the rules. Upholding the principles of fair play is one of the defining aspects of the sport. To compete at the highest level Ultimate players must possess a degree of speed, stamina and agility that is matched in few other sports. A skillful player can make the disc fly straight or in a curve, hover in mid-air or drop like a stone.

It’s played on a court about the size of a netball court, with a three-metre ‘D’ and a trampett at either end. To score you have to throw the ball against the trampett and have it land on the floor outside the D – no one is allowed to stand inside this area with the ball. No contact or interference is allowed between players. The only way to gain possession of the ball is by catching it after the opposing player has shot against the frame or if the opposition makes a mistake.

The Leeds club, LeedsLeedsLeeds, has a men’s and a women’s team – the men being at high-mid level. The women’s scene isn’t as big. There are 24 odd teams competing regularly and the LeedsLeedsLeeds Women’s team is comfortably in the top eight.

It’s a great game that anyone can pick up really quickly. Leeds Tchoukball Club currently has about 25 members and is based at Leeds Beckett University, but the club is open to all (male or female).

Most people pick up the sport at university level, but the youth scene is growing.

Two teams –Leeds Galaxy and Leeds Cosmos – play in National League competition and last year Leeds Galaxy came second in National Championships, qualifying for European Winners Cup. Club players have also represented Team UK at international level.

The club would welcome new members and has plans to expand membership in the New Year. Open sessions are scheduled for Saturday 17th & 31st January at Batley Sports & Tennis centre (small contribution towards pitch hire requested). For further information and to register attendance at one of the open sessions, please use the contact form at www. leedsultimate.com/contact

The club is always looking for new members. They train twice a week, at Leeds Beckett (Headingley Campus). To find out more, email leeds@tchoukball.org.uk or find them on facebook.

KORFBALL orfball has similarities to netball and basketball, but it’s also very different. It’s faster, and there are no set positions. Everyone learns to both attack and defend. There are currently around 100 people playing Korfball in Leeds across three clubs - Leeds City, Leeds University and Leeds Beckett University. The two University clubs typically only have students playing for them, but Leeds City is a welcoming community club and is always looking for new players. The clubs currently play in the Yorkshire Korfball league(s) against four teams in Sheffield. Korfball is the only true mixed gender sport. It is perfect for both men and women, and there is no expectation of having any prior knowledge of the game. If you’re a total beginner, they still want you! Your first month with Leeds City is absolutely free to give you the chance to decide if it’s for you. For further information, contact Leeds City via leedskorfball@gmail.com, or visit www.leedscitykorfballclub.co.uk

Stagecoach Theatre School Principal Ken Davison recently celebrated ten years of running the local Stagecoach franchise and was presented with a pair of crystal champagne glasses by Stagecoach Director Mansoor Ishani at the Stagecoach Annual Conference in Chipping Norton.

eflecting on the highlights of his ten years, Ken commented: “It certainly hasn’t been all plain sailing! Through the recession we had to work hard to keep the numbers up. However, the highlights far outweigh the challenges - when children land TV appearances and parts in touring shows, it’s great. These can be lifechanging opportunities that really inspire them. “We’ve also performed showcases at West Yorkshire Playhouse, and Leeds Town Hall,

The highlights far outweigh the challenges

and the children always love these big events. Our quiet successes include children who didn’t like singing in public suddenly finding they want to do solos; and all the children who’ve achieved exam grades far exceeding their hopes. “Running a Stagecoach School isn’t a job – it’s a way of life! I just hope the kids have as much fun at Stagecoach as I do!” For more information contact Ken Davison on 01757 248884 Horsforth@stagecoach.co.uk

Fabian Hamilton Visits GSAL Fabian Hamilton MP recently gave Upper Sixth students at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) an insight into his life in politics. The visit was part of the PSHCE programme, which includes learning about the political system.

Fabian has been the MP for Leeds North East since 1997. By taking the students through his week he demonstrated how wide-ranging his role is. An opposition backbencher and a member of the International Development Committee, Fabian deals with a wide range of issues in Westminster, as well as meeting with constituents in Leeds. Fabian fielded questions on Nigel Farage and UKIP, private education, Ed Miliband’s leadership of the Labour party, the potential for a coalition with the Liberal Democrats and devolution to the regions.

This boost to pupil funding for 2015/16 will help teachers support those children most at risk of falling behind. The Pupil Premium has been shown to help youngsters achieve better exam results. Figures from last year show that 30.9% of children from poorer backgrounds achieved five or more GCSEs at A* to C grade. This compares to 26.7% in 2012. Schools Minister, David Laws,

Talbot Primary Wins the Numbers Game albot Primary School got its sums right to take the trophy in the annual Leeds Junior Schools Maths Challenge for Year 6 pupils, run by The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL). Teams from 52 schools took part in the two semi-finals, 21 of which made it through to the final. Teams of four tackled maths questions based on the school curriculum and, in a highscoring competition, Talbot Primary School emerged as winners – six points ahead of their nearest rival, Richmond House School, who were just three points up on third placed Spring Bank Primary.

The Leeds Junior Schools Maths Challenge was introduced by GSAL maths teacher Pat Brotherton seven years ago. “It was great to see so many talented children taking part and enjoying maths”, said Pat. “The standard was very high and, once again, we had a different winner, demonstrating what an open competition it is.” “I’m very proud of our pupils”, said teacher Olivia Wagstaff, from Talbot. “They worked well together as a team and set a high standard for our school

Moor Allerton Hall Primary Sees Huge Upturn in Applications oor Allerton Hall Primary School in Moortown has seen a huge upturn in applications for places after teachers and parents worked together to make significant changes throughout the school. On the back of a massively successful programme aimed at improving the school’s facilities and academic results, whilst remaining true to the ethos of inclusion, Moor Allerton Hall not only received a ‘Good’ rating in its most recent OFSTED evaluation, but the work of all staff received glowing praise.

The assessment noted that, ‘under the inspired leadership of the current head teacher, senior leaders, governors and staff have worked hard to make far reaching changes which have rapidly improved achievement’. The school also applied to become the city’s specialist provision for deaf and hearing-impaired children of primary school age. “We consulted with our parents before applying and the response was overwhelmingly positive”, said head teacher Lesley McKay. “Establishing t h e D e a f and H e a ri ng

With everyone’s support we were able to quickly make all the necessary changes in anticipation of our newest arrivals last September. “We firmly believe that our children should learn about differently abled people at an early age, together with multiculturalism and an understanding of religious beliefs, to provide a grounding for later life.”
