(EDWARD) ARCHIBALD RAMSDEN (1835-1916) MUSICAL ENTREPRENEUR
The highpoint of Archibald Ramsden’s rich life came when he was summoned to Balmoral in 1867 to play before Queen Victoria on his patented melody harmonium – what a moment for this innkeeper’s son from Sheepscar. He loved to tell the tale of his long train journey north, and his arrest at Edinburgh as a suspected Irish terrorist until his luggage revealed not guns but an innocent harmonium! He enjoyed a career as a performer, an impresario, an inventor and an entrepreneur, building a musical empire which stretched from Leeds to London and across the north. His multiple talents, humour, charm, and twinkling blue eyes took him far. e was born in 1835, the third of

The practical and economic benefits of re-upholstering furniture are well known but, let’s be honest, most people would not consider it an art. et, it can be exciting, fun and dare we say sexy! Imagine a sedate Louis chair recovered in what at first glance looks like a typical and traditional pastoral scene. But there’s a sting in the tail – the fabric is by one of the most creative and irreverent fabric designers, ‘Timorous Beasties’ (www.timourousbeasties. com). On closer inspection you’ll find that the pastoral scene is actually a run-down urban scene complete with smack addict and drunks! Does anyone remember the Thompson Twins? Well the crazy-haired singer in the 80s synth-pop band, Alannah Currie, has been reincarnated as enfant terrible artist-upholsterer! She is a vegetarian, but incorporates roadkill such as foxes in her work! Check out her astonishingly bizarre art pieces at www.misspokeno.com You might wonder who would buy this? “The people who buy them will want to own an extraordinary piece of furniture in the same way as people buy paintings and sculpture”, says Alannah. “I sell to collectors. My first piece - a chair that I had thrown off a cliff and then rebuilt - sold for £5,000!” Now not everyone is in the market for a taxidermy swan lashed to their chair, but if you find the right boutique upholsterer, the sky is the limit! Do you want a statement chair?
You become the designer
www.eclectic-chair.com
Do you crave a shlumpy TV chair covered in worn vintage leather? Then go for it! Or perhaps you’ve inherited your Aunt Maud’s moth eaten chaise longue and you picture yourself lounging elegantly in your bay window on a chaise transformed by vintage French linen. Does all of this cost a fortune? Well, it’s not cheap! But the cost of reupholstering is still less than buying new. As with most things, you get what you pay for, and cheap material doesn’t last, so it is worth spending a bit more on a quality fabric that will last for years. Sure you can buy a brand new sofa
from a place with three initials for £600, but the frame may be flimsy, the fabric banal, and it’s designed to both wear and go out of fashion like a Christmas onesie. After a few years you will be looking for another. It makes more sense to find a second hand quality brand, such as a George Smith, or a stylish vintage classic, and invest in the skills of a local upholsterer. You become the designer as you get to choose the colour, the pattern and the finish. We are fortunate to have several boutique upholsterers in and around Leeds, such as www.emilyfarncombe.co.uk, www.eclectic-chair.com, www. headingleyupholstery.co.uk, or www.helenfoxupholstery.co.uk so take your pick and get designing!

veryone was welcome and people turned up laden with all kinds of food to share, plus there was a barbecue outside The Regent Pub. There was lots of excellent live music and chat and, to top it all, it was a beautiful sunny day (with a slightly chilly breeze!). An integral part of the day was the announcement of the winners in the Chapel Allerton Awards an annual competition run by cara, which celebrates unsung local heroes. People were invited to nominate their choices in ten categories, which were both community and commercially
focused. The cara committee then voted for the top three in each category, based on the reasons given for the nominations as well as the number of nominations received. Each winner received a certificate and trophy. Over 100 people submitted nominations, and there were many worthy contenders. The final winners were: Young Achiever – Alex Pagdin; Best Neighbour – Andy Yeung; Best Street – Methley Place; Best Shop – Chirpy; Best Place to Eat – The Sunshine Bakery; Best Place to Drink – The Mustard Pot; Best Member of Staff – Alex Graham, Opposite; Best Team – Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods; Contribution to the Community – Chapel Allerton Arts Festival; King & Queen of Chapel Allerton – Stephen Fleming & Jane Richardson. In addition to the Awards and the Big Lunch, cara also organise a range of classes and monthly
supper clubs at local eateries. It is currently working on a project to improve the children’s play area in the park. Membership is just £10 for 12 months, and members can use their cara card in approx 70 different shops, bars, restaurants and online businesses in the area to enjoy excellent discounts. Opera North’s Children’s Chorus and Youth Company will perform two newly commissioned short operas to mark the end of a fantastic year. he 75 strong Opera North Children’s Choir will bring ‘The Selfish Giant’, a new 70-minute chamber opera, based on Oscar Wilde’s classic children’s story, to The Howard Assembly Room on Sunday 12th July at 4.30pm. It uses music by Handel to tell the story of a giant who builds a wall around his beautiful garden to keep the world out. Justin Doyle, Music Director, has created the libretto for this special performance, together with new arrangements of
arias from some of Handel’s bestloved operas, specially arranged for children’s voices. It will be conducted by Justin Doyle and directed by James Hurley. The chorus is accompanied by a ninepiece chamber orchestra and features operatic bass Graeme Danby as The Giant.
On Saturday 18th July (also at the Howard Assembly Room, 7pm), the Opera North Youth Company will present ‘Opera Bingo’, a brand new piece of music theatre based on Leeds city centre social observations. The audience will be invited to take part in a highly irregular game of bingo. It features an original score by composer Eve Harrison and libretto by Doncaster-based Andrew Loretto, who also directs. Opera North’s youth projects provide opportunities for those aged seven to 19 to develop their skills as performers, whilst also engaging with professional artists. The Children’s Chorus is one of the only children’s ensembles to be led by a professional opera company in the UK and was recently nominated for Best Classical Music Education Initiative at the Music Teacher Awards. The Opera North Youth Company, which has over 50 members aged 13 to 19, encourages the development of advanced performance skills and the creation of new work as an ensemble. o et s Ja m es Na s h and Matthew Hedley Stoppard are about to release a collection of verse celebrating Leeds’ cinematic history. ‘Cinema Stories’, which they have collaborated on for over a year and is published by Valley Press, will feature the writers’ experiences of the city’s picture houses, past and present, as well as memories from the general public. “Leeds has a long history and association with the moving image – from the time that Louis le Prince filmed sequences of a Roundhay Gardens’ scene in October 1888, to the well established Leeds
International Film Festival today”, said James. “I have lived in Leeds for almost half a century and still remember picture houses dotted about the city and its suburbs and what it meant to our communities. “I think that our poetry and some well chosen images are a wonderful way to celebrate that historic relationship, whilst appealing beyond the city environs to anyone who has ever gone to the pictures.” In 1939, there were 68 picture houses in Leeds (five in Armley, eight in Hunslet and two within a mile of each other on York Road) and most of them are recognisable today. ‘Cinema Stories’ looks back at local moviegoers, but is also a lament for how such remarkable buildings are no longer used for their original purpose. Both James and Matthew will be reading from ‘Cinema Stories at various events over the Summer, as well as at Headingley Library on National Poetry Day (8th October), Leeds International Film Festival in November, and Headingley Litfest in March.
‘Cinema Stories’ will be available in the Autumn. You can tweet your own cinema stories to James and Matthew via Twitter @Cinema_ Stories

he White Rose Orchestra is a performance-based orchestra that plays concerts all over Yorkshire and has built up a great reputation. It plays light classical music, including film music, opera arias, waltzes and general light music. The orchestra currently numbers about 25 players but is seeking more string players and some wind and brass players (Grade 6 or above) so it can extend its repertoire and fulfill all its concert requests.
White Rose recently performed at Connaught Court, York (in front of 500 people), Hebden Bridge (with a choir), The Northern Society of Gilbert and Sullivan in Manchester, and Oakworth Hall West Yorkshire. Last month the orchestra played with Russian Pianist Natalia Strelchenko in Leeds, which was such a success that Richmond House School has booked a repeat concert in November.
Chris Irvin, a talented oboe player, singer and composer, has conducted the orchestra for the last four years. He has just recorded his second CD with a professional orchestra in Ireland. The orchestra, which rehearses every Thursday, 7 – 9.30pm at Moortown Methodist Church, Alderton Rise, LS17 5LHY, would also like to find a local sponsor to help with ongoing costs. City Junk-tion, part of The Real Junk Food Project (TRJFP) network, has opened with Santiago Bar in the Grand Arcade. perating Thursday to Sunday, 12 noon to 5pm, the cafe uses intercepted waste food to create meals that people can buy on a Pay As you Feel basis. One can pay as much as they can afford or instead offer their time helping out or whatever skills they can contribute. The Real Junk Food Project, which started about 18 months ago, has expanded rapidly and scores of people have rallied to the cause since opening its first cafe in Armley. TRJFP now has over 40 operating cafes and numerous pop-up food stalls operating across the country, and the initiative has caught on internationally. In the week we spoke to Real Junk Food founder, Adam Smith, he said they’d received enquiries from Australia and South Africa. There are currently 110 members of the network worldwide. To date, the network has intercepted 68 tons of food, created over 42,000 meals and served over 38,000 people. So far the project has racked up over £60,000 in donations. The phenomenal growth of the project might seem at odds with their unique business model (surely considered counterintuitive by most); the ultimate aim of The Real Junk Food Project is to put themselves out of business. To Adam and the other members of the network what success looks like is a world where food waste is managed and food is distributed
to those who need it as a matter of course, therefore making initiatives like TRJFP unnecessary. Adam is keen to point out that TRJFP isn’t specifically about feeding the homeless. At their cafes they happily feed everyone, regardless of their situation or background. As such, TRJFP has made a considerable impact in some of the more disadvantaged

If Santiago Bar can help by feeding people, and stopping such edible food waste, then we go a small way to make that change.”

Residents in Gledhow and Brackenwood have set up The Friends of Gledhow Field to protect and enhance the field at the rear of Gledhow Primary School. This field has been freely accessible to the public for over twenty years and is the last such green space left in the area. sum of money was made available by the old rugby club to enhance the field for community use and preserve it as the last green space open to the public in the Brackenwood/Gledhow area when their grounds were developed into a housing estate. Although that was some years ago that money has never been spent. The Friends of Gledhow Field is seeking to protect and enhance the field for present and future generations and are looking for input from local residents so that they can make the best use of this money.
The aims of the group are:
•
To protect, conserve, enhance and
maintain Gledhow Community Field for community use with free access to the public to use as a playing field and green space, through lobbying, litter picks, planting etc.
•
To develop working relationships
with Leeds City Council, Gledhow Primary
School,
Brackenwood
Community Association, Education Leeds and West Yorkshire Police.
•
To create a safer, cleaner, greener
environment in and around the Brackenwood and Gledhow community.
•
To foster a strong community spirit
and give people the chance to get to know one another better through the association’s activities.
The name ‘Gledhow’ is derived from the Saxon words signifying ‘The Hill of the Kite’
•
To provide support from within the community to others in the community, particularly the more vulnerable. The area has strong historical significance. The name ‘Gledhow’ is derived from the Saxon words signifying ‘The Hill of the Kite’. The Gledhow Grange and Allerton Grange area was the site of the ancient Allerton Grange Farm, a Cistercian monastic farm of Kirkstall Abbey. The Brackenwood area was predominantly large open grassland
with a woodland area running along Gledhow Beck to the west and south, Lidgett Farm and Allerton Grange Farm to the north, and Gledhow Grange to the east. The ancient Allerton Grange Farmhouse and outbuildings were located near the site of two converging becks, which flow into Gledhow Valley Woods.

Better Leeds Communities are supporting Leeds families through a Children’s Centres project and has successfully helped its clients to claim over £1 million of unclaimed benefits in the last year. “It is testament to the work of our advisers and telephone assessors that they were able to identify £1,202,680 of unclaimed benefits”, said Richard Bridge, project supervisor. “It’s not difficult to imagine the difference this will make to some lower-income families around Leeds. It further confounds the common misconception of fraudulent benefit claimants. Instead, we see that many people are not claiming what they are due.

Tony Passmore, Managing Director of MoreAbility Bathroom Solutions, recently completed his third charity cycle ride in aid of the William Merritt Disabled Living Centre, based at St Mary’s Hospital in Armley. This time he undertook a 500km journey across Burma (Myanmar), raising £3,000 in sponsorship.
This was one of the hardest challenges I’ve done
he William Merritt Centre provides advise and assistance to the elderly and people with disabilities, helping them live independently in their homes and MoreAbility (a division of The Passmore Group) has worked with the Centre for a number of years promoting and supporting independent, safe living in and around Leeds. “In keeping with Tony’s admirable efforts in Myanmar, we have decided to put this money towards our Tryb4uFly service”, said David Blythe, manager at
the Centre. “This service is for disabled children and adults who are planning to travel. We provide cabin assessments, information about flying with a disability and hiring equipment to make the journey easier. “You can try out specialised seating, harnesses and positioning systems. We have a specially built plane fuselage that creates a real life situation. Our occupational therapists will guide you through boarding the aircraft, wheelchair transfer options and support systems available, helping you to plan ahead.”
Tony’s donation brings Passmore’s support of the Centre to over £10,000. “This was one of the hardest challenges I’ve done”, said Tony. “A 32 hour delay and over 50 hours travelling meant we had no time to prepare or acclimatise. We were thrown straight into tough hilly cycling in 40 degree heat, and extra miles were added every day to make up for the lost time. I have to admit, for a while I wished I wasn’t there! But that’s what such challenges are all about – it’s never meant to be easy!” For further information, about MoreAbility, please contact 0113 201 5030, info@moreability. co.uk, or visit www.moreability. co.uk To contact The William Merritt Disabled Living Centre Centre, call 0113 350 8989 or email info@wmdlc.org

Alwoodley Ward A big ‘thank you’ to all the North Leeds Life readers who wrote in with what they liked about Alwoodley and things that could be improved. I now have a list of street signs that need replacing, bins that need sourcing and one or two bushes that need trimming, to name just a few things!
CLLR BILL URRY
Roundhay Ward Walking in Leeds and Yorkshire Sunday 31st May saw the start of the Ramblers ‘Walk Leeds’ festival, in Roundhay Park, followed by a walk along the Roundhay Park valley, led by the Ramblers Vice President, Janet Street Porter. It was a great chance to get out of the car, get to know parts of our city, socialise and get healthy - a particular priority for the Council. I became seriously interested in walking in the early 1990s when we first lived in Roundhay and, with several other families with young children, started to explore the Dales. At the time the late Frank Wilkinson was writing a regular walking column for the Yorkshire Post, and Walking with Wilkinson books were regularly published. Always quirky, and often hard to follow with historical anecdote muddled
One interesting suggestion from a surprising number of people was a request that Neil, Peter and I come along as guest speakers, to meet local residents when they don’t have a problem. In part, this is the idea behind the community conversation dinners we held late last year and early this year, and which we will be holding again after the summer. However, if there are local groups that would like us to come along for a question and answer session, I know the three of us would be happy to be there. Alternatively, as one lady suggested, if a group of neighbours wanted to get together to meet with us, just tell us when and where. We are now, of course, in the midst of a balmy British Summer. With the longer days sometimes some of the basics in home security get forgotten – windows are left open, back doors left ajar. These matters were raised at a recent PACT meeting at Treetops (first Monday of every month, next meeting Monday
6th July), as things to take extra care over – nobody wants to make life easier for burglars. On the subject of burglars, it is really worthwhile giving some extra thought to how to make an unoccupied home look lived in, especially as so many people will be away for some time over the summer. For example: invest in a time switch for lights, ask neighbours to put bins out and bring them back in, stop your paper delivery, ask a friend to move post that has collected on the doormat, and don’t mention on social media or on an answerphone that you are away. All of these will help to keep our homes that bit safer. For any and all local queries your local councillors are always here to help.
with sometimes rather confusing directions, they introduced us to many delights across Yorkshire. Would we have found our way to the huge Hole of Horcum near Whitby, or the byways of Goathland and Grassington, or Malham Tarn if Frank had not found us the best routes to explore on foot? In the process we also learned to be wary of stampeding cattle and children treading on wasps’ nests - both of which we encountered on that memorable walk in 1997. I still have seven yellowing Wilkinson books on the shelf, well thumbed, in some cases out of date, and all showing signs of frequent Yorkshire drenchings. With the children all long gone, we are still using them and the original families are still involved. But the Walk Leeds programme demonstrates just how much there
still is to find on our doorstep. Thanks Frank for some great walks, and thanks to the Ramblers too.

he sound track of any Summer trip to the countryside has to include the twittering and buzzing of swallows and house martins as they swoop and dive over fields, lakes and rivers. For months we take them for granted, then one day they are gone. In July the young are fledging and all birds are feeding up for the long journey to their wintering grounds. So this is a good time to take a look at these remarkable creatures. The swallow is blue-black above, with a reddish brown front, pale underparts and conspicuous tail streamers. The house martin can look very similar at first, but it has a white rump when seen from above, and a forked tail.
House martins often nest under the eaves of houses

Swallows prefer to nest in nooks and crannies in outbuildings, and avoid built-up areas, whilst house martins often nest under the eaves of houses, although before the 19th century they used cliff faces. Both species will remain faithful to the same nest site from one year to the next, and build their nests of mud and plant material lined with feathers. Recently, house martins have been declining in the UK. You can encourage them to nest by providing artificial nests or nest platforms.

If the weather is kind there is nowhere nicer than an English garden in July. Think of cream teas and lazy afternoons spent sitting outside.

Five things to do this month
• Help your lawn to look splendid by giving it a summer feed.
• Move conservatory plants such as oranges and lemons outside into the garden for the summer. • Be sure to keep watering all your containers and baskets as they dry out quickly. Rain doesn’t always get past the plant leaves and into the soil. If in doubt test the soil for moisture by poking your finger in. • Treat your garden furniture to a new coat of paint. Why not have a change and choose from one of the many exciting colours now available for wood or metal? • Keep deadheading your bedding and container plants to keep the blooms coming.
English Gardens On recent travels I visited numerous gardens in the warmer climate of the Atlantic Isles where sub-tropical conditions enable a huge variety of plant species to be grown. On coming home I still maintain that our English gardens have a charm that is hard to match, with their lush greens and delicate flower colours they are, in my opinion, the best in the world. Enjoy some of the finest local gardens at Harewood House, York Gate, Stillingfleet Lodge, Newby Hall and Beningbrough Hall to name but a few, or dip into the

Plant radishes or salad crops such as lettuce, rocket, mizuna or spring onions and you will be enjoying tasty home grown food in just a few weeks. You could also plant a few Spring cabbage seeds for crops to enjoy later on. Vegetables ready to pick this month include Carrots, Lettuce, Beetroots, Peas, Courgettes and Broad Beans.

his Summer, thousands of wildlife lovers will go back to basics and spend a night under the stars for the RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout. For the third time, the charity is encouraging people to sleep out in their gardens or outdoor space to get close to nature and discover which creatures they share their homes with. The event will take place over a weekend (7th – 9th August) and campers of all ages are encouraged to take part. From the adventurous, who will be building and sleeping in dens and shelters, to traditional tents and caravans, and those who will just sleep under the stars – all are welcome to take part! Nature comes alive at night. At dusk, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers emerge to forage for food, and bats flutter through the air after moths and other insects. Sounds can give a good indication of what is happening – from birds singing just before they go to roost to the
snuffling of hedgehogs and the clicks and whistles of bats’ echolocation. Frogs and toads are also more active at night. S l e e p o u t events are taking place at RSPB nature reserves across the country. Special nighttime ventures will vary
for each event, but a few of these include outdoor cooking, fireside fun with stories round the campfire and night time strolls. A full list, together with a range of activities, including den building, torchlight safaris and bug hunting, is available at www. rspb.org.uk/sleepout. A free pack with all the info you need will be available from the website from 1st July.

EP Review:
Fitzwallace – Sweetheart Having only been around for a couple of years and barely out of their teens, Fitzwallace have already made something of an impact, finding themselves championed by local BBC radio DJs and appearing on the line up of Country to Country at London’s O2, Europe’s largest country music festival. This accomplished EP shows that this is no accident.
igeonholing Fitzwallace as Country does seem to do them something of a disservice, while there is a rootsy feel underpinning their sound, they easily incorporate other influences that see them transcend the genre. Opening track Ballad of a Star hits the ground running with an upbeat shuffling rhythm underlying jangling, twangy guitars and an insistent bassline. It’s a rollicking, Tex-Mex flavoured nugget that, in its brisk running time, establishes the group’s knack for dynamic arrangement and skilful instrumentation. Title track Sweetheart of Mine initially conjures a folk-rock feel with some very tasty, rhythmic mandolin taking centre stage and gathers momentum as driving percussion and soaring vocal harmonies are added to the mix. Golden State of Mind is a bright and breezy ditty that evokes both the sun-soaked west coast vibe of The Byrds and the proto-country-rock of The Flying Burrito Brothers. It also shifts the spotlight to the group’s female vocalist whose work here really lifts the tune while calling to mind obvious but certainly favourable June/Dolly comparisons. The EP’s closing track, Somebody New initially gives one a sense of déjà vu with a can’t quite put my finger on it/feels like I’ve heard this before quality, but if it is somewhat derivative this is but a trifling quibble which is swept aside when you’re hooked in by a liltingly melodic chorus that is positively Beatles-y and a fleeting but effective guitar breakdown. The EP displays oodles of early promise that points to great things in Fitzwallace’s future. Definitely worth checking out and keeping an ear out for.
he charity ‘Right Choices’ is holding another exciting cultural day at HEART on Bennett Road in Headingley on Saturday 18th July. Hot off the production line, the contributors were the first to receive their copies. “There is a real feel-good factor to the latest White Rosettes album”, said supporter, Alys Galloway. “Not only is it a great representation of our barbershop music but every time I press play I remember that I helped make this happen.”

McCarthy
FILM
REVIEW BY BRENDAN CAMPBELL
SPY DIRECTED BY: PAUL FEIG STARRING: MELISSA MCCARTHY, ROSE BYRNE, JASON STATHAM, JUDE LAW, MIRANDA HART CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 120 MINS aving scored a monster hit and delivered a solid retort to the nonsense “women aren’t funny” charge with Bridesmaids a few years ago, Paul Feig again utilises the considerable comedic talents of Melissa McCarthy in this slight but fun espionage romp. McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a deskbound CIA analyst who can barely suppress the crush she fosters for Bradley Fine (Jude Law), the suave, Bond-esque agent she remotely helps guide through missions. When Fine is killed in action Susan is given the opportunity to step up and prove her worth as an agent while attempting to foil a dastardly international arms trade plot. Correctly acknowledging that the spy spoof genre has more or less been done to death, writer/director Feig wisely chooses to focus on the character comedy here and is helped by some star turns by members of a cast which is, frankly, a bit of a mixed bag. While McCarthy effortlessly carries the picture with a typically spirited performance (particularly when she turns the air blue with some of the most inspired swearing this side of The Thick of It) and has a nicely spikey rapport with Rose Byrne as her nemesis, Rayna Boyanov, Jude Law is as blandly ‘meh’ as he’s been in anything else I’ve seen him in and I could have done with far less of Miranda Hart in the sidekick role.
gamely throws herself into the film’s high octane action set pieces
The revelatory turn here, though, surely must be Jason Statham. While the rest of the world seems to have enthusiastically embraced ‘The Stath’ as the premier action movie star of our times, I’ve struggled to get on
board with this assessment which I put down to what I perceived as his utterly humourless demeanour. Well, it seems I have unfairly underestimated Mr Statham who here shows off his rarely glimpsed, impressive comedic chops bringing some of the movie’s biggest laughs and damn near stealing every scene he’s in. As the two funniest people in the movie McCarthy and Statham also seem to be participating in a kind of job-swap for, as The Stath gives his funny bones a work out, McCarthy gamely throws herself into the film’s high octane action set pieces (surprisingly deftly
handled by Feig) particularly a superbly choreographed kitchen-set knife fight. On the whole, Spy gets by on its buoyant, daft energy and the strength of its central performances. It has enough laughs so as not to disappoint but it falls somewhat short of being a Bridesmaidsstyle comedy blockbuster. It does further confirm, though, that as a director and star combo Feig and McCarthy are a winning team and goes some way to assuaging one’s instinctive scepticism regarding their upcoming gender-flipped Ghostbusters remake.

Two Leeds Beckett University academics were recently shortlisted for a Royal Television Society Yorkshire award for their animations which were commissioned by the Kaiser Chiefs for their tour earlier this year. enior Lecturer in Broadcast Media Technologies, Tim Blackwell, was approached in December 2014 for the group’s arena tour which took place in January and February this year, culminating in a sold out concert at Leeds’s First Direct Arena. He worked with colleague and award-winning animator, Ashley Dean, to develop a film to accompany ‘The Occupation’, a poem written by singer Ricky Wilson, which featured on their 2014 album, ‘Education, Education, Education and War’. Tim has a long association with the band, having studied with Ricky at Leeds Beckett. “We were under quite a bit of pressure to turn the work around quickly in time for the Kaiser Chiefs tour, so there wasn’t much time to enjoy any plaudits that came our way”, he said. “I’m proud to be nominated for the award alongside Ashley, as it gives us an opportunity to demonstrate to our students the value in teamwork and underlines how important the bonds they make on the Broadcast Media Technologies course may prove in their professional lives. “‘The Occupation’ is about the futility of war, narrated from a soldier’s perspective, so we knew we ideally wanted to create something visually striking that drew on the iconography of war, but that was removed from time and place”, said Tim. “We discussed Raymond Briggs, Pink Floyd and Terry Gilliam as points of reference. During the tour the poem was narrated in a pre-record by actor Bill Nighy. The only direction from the

band was that they wanted something poignant to reflect the mood of the poem and a moment in their live set.” The first that the Kaiser Chief’s saw of the animated film was a week before their UK Arena tour was due to start at the Liverpool Echo Arena. “Thankfully they really loved it,” said Tim. The film has been shortlisted

Laura Crane Trust Funds Chill Out Space at St James’ Connor Woods, who lives in Chapel Allerton and attends Abbey Grange Academy recently attained another Personal Best of 49.53 when he won the U-17 400m at the 2015 Yorkshire Athletics Championships in Cudworth, as well as adding the 200m title to his range of gold medals. nother prodigy of Lutel James and the Chapeltown Youth Development Football set up, Connor had trained with Leeds United as a 14 year old. Soon after his school asked him to travel with their athletics’ team to the West Yorkshire Schools’ Championships at Cleckheaton in June 2013 as they were short a runner in the 200m U-15 category. He had never run before in any competition but he surprised everyone by beating a field of long time junior athletes in a time of 23.93. In six further meetings that Summer he won three!
As luck would have it, in the crowd that day was the renowned track coach Brian Scobie, who holds senior coaching roles at English Athletics and UK Athletics. He noted Connor’s potential and invited him to train at the Leeds City Athletics Club. That was two years ago. In the last 12 months Connor has continued to impress by winning a number of firsts at athletics events. Connor’s next target is the English Schools International later this Summer. Look out for him on athletics tracks in the future.
The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust has many ongoing projects at St James’ Hospital. Its latest funding has helped build a chill-out space and treatment room for young patients aged 13 – 24 in the radiotherapy department, where it match-funded £20,000 for the construction, and plans to give a further £10,000 to equip the unit when completed. This age appropriate unit will provide a relaxing environment where patients can socialise, and another area for them to talk confidentially with nurses about their treatment. The Trust also pledged £80,000 to St James’ for research into the treatment of ovarian and testicular cancer in young people, which is in its final stages. On a wider scale, the Trust provides hospitals with laptop libraries to help young people keep connected with friends, family and school work, as some patients have to travel far from home, and may be hospitalised for long periods and suffer from social isolation. HS Leeds North CCG and Leeds South and East CCG, have launched the NHS CCG Third Sector Health Grants scheme, aimed at reducing the gap in life expectancy between the most deprived and most affluent communities and reducing health inequalities. Funding is available to support various projects – such as developing or delivering services, establishing and maintaining partnerships and involving people in community activities surrounding health and wellbeing. Both funds will be managed by Leeds Community Foundation, the largest independent grantmaking organisation in the city, and activities being targeted include tackling alcohol addiction, providing support for those with mental health concerns and addressing the healthcare needs of children.

There was a sense of déjà vu in the doubles final, as Shayan and his partner James Smith from Kent went 0-2 down against Harry Dai and Ethan Walsh. Once again, he came back from the brink as he and James rescued the match to win the last three games by a convincing margin and make it Shayan’s second title of the day. Shayan qualified for the national championships through his UK ranking, and was seeded fourth for the competition. He has represented England in a number of competitions in singles and with his doubles partner James Smith.

Get Active with Carnegie Sports Camps
eeds Beckett University has lined up an exciting programme of Carnegie Junior Rackets and Athletics camps at Headingley Campus from 27th July to 28th August. The camps are based at the University’s Carnegie Sports Centre, where children will have access to some of the finest tennis and sports hall facilities in the country.
“The camps are fun, friendly and a great opportunity for children to keep active over the holidays”, said Kirsty Mcphee, Racket Sports Development Officer at Leeds Beckett. “They will have access to high-class facilities and the opportunity to work with an elite coaching team. The teaching is focused on specific sports, developing new skills whilst improving existing ones.”
Both camps will be led by performance coaches The Junior Rackets Camp (ages 8 – 14) focuses on four racket sports – tennis, badminton, squash and table tennis. It runs from 9am to 4pm every day for a week, alternating each week throughout the Summer programme with a pure Tennis Camp, which runs from 10am to 4pm. Both camps will be led by performance coaches. Children will be placed in appropriate groups, according to age and ability. They can choose to attend the Tennis Camp any day for £20 (£90 for the full week), or Rackets for £25 a day (£110 for the week). A Mini Tennis Red Camp (ages 4 – 7) will run from 9 -10am each day for £5.50 per session or £25 for a full week. The Athletics Summer Camp (ages 8 – 16) is a balanced programme of activities, techniques, skills and games delivered by fully qualified UK Athletics coaches. Participants will take part in a wide range of events, including: sprinting, hurdles, javelin, discus, long jump, shot put and high jump. Once again, children are split into appropriate groups. The five-day camp (10am to 1pm) is priced at £60, with individual days available for £14. Leeds Youth Dance Groups Through to National Competition n April, 25 youth dance groups from around Yorkshire performed at West Yorkshire Playhouse and Yorkshire Dance as part of Fresh 2015. The competition was fierce but the judges finally chose ‘Atmosphere’ (Cockburn School, Beeston) and ‘DAZL Male Youth Dance Company’ (Leeds) to go on to U.Dance (Youth Dance England’s annual competition) in Plymouth from 22nd – 25th July. The judges commented that Atmosphere’s ‘The Wolf’ ‘stood out stylistically from the rest of the programme’. The piece followed Red Riding Hood and the Woodcutter on a dark journey through the forest and
Engaging, authentic and visually strong questioned the idea of whether or not ‘good’ can always overcome ‘evil’. DAZL’s ‘Contaminated’ was described as ‘thoroughly engaging, authentic and visually strong’. It looked at transmitted diseases and

hildren and staff at Rose Court, the nursery and pre-prep of The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), teamed up and recorded a CD as a tribute to retiring head Anne Pickering, whose love of music was an inspiration throughout her 25 years leading the school. “I chose the title ‘Time for a Song’ because Anne has always been so incredibly supportive of music”, said music teacher Chris Turner. “At Rose Court there was always ‘time for a song’!” “There’s nothing I would rather be associated with more than music”
said Anne. “Music teaches so many other skills – listening, cooperation, teamwork, self-confidence and selfesteem. A musical school is a good school; children can develop a love of music that stays with them for life.” GSAL’s principal and chief executive Mike Gibbons said: “Anne has been an outstanding head teacher, who was loved and respected by pupils, parents and staff. Many of our senior pupils started their school career with Anne at Rose Court and think of her with great affection. “We are sorry to see her go and wish her a long and happy retirement.”
The CD was recorded by School Recording Stars and the sleeve artwork is by Year 2 pupil Dimitra Pountou, who won a competition to design the cover. Anne Pickering’s successor will be current deputy head Mrs Jo Hall.
