The service, funded by Leeds City Council, provides intensive support to owners of empty properties to help them work out what their options are, and then helps them practically to bring their home back into use. Depending on what the owner wants, Leeds Empties will explore options that could include renovation, rental, and sale through either an agent or auction. They can also help people find contractors, or advice on dealing with issues such as probate.

ALFRED AUSTIN (1835-1913)

POET, POLITICAL JOURNALIST AND CRITIC Leeds can boast only one poet laureate, but in fact nobody boasts about him at all. He’s more of a shameful secret. Alfred Austin, born and brought up in Leeds, was appointed poet laureate in 1896, after four years of tussle and argument about a worthy successor to the revered Lord Tennyson and William Wordsworth. His appointment unleashed a flood of criticism and insult which left his reputation in tatters and buried him for years. Search the poetry anthologies, look for a blue plaque on his birthplace: nothing. Complacent and egotistical, he lacked personal appeal, but some of his writing has charm and grace, reflecting his genuine, romantic love of English gardens and nature. Is it time to dig him up? He was born in 1835, third of the six children of Joseph Austin, a prosperous Leeds wool merchant and magistrate. He had just had a splendid new house built on Headingley Hill - ‘Ashwood’, off North Hill Road, its gothic arched windows and tall chimneys still a feature. In later memories Alfred recalled the open fields separating it from Woodhouse Moor, where cows grazed and he used to exercise his pony – an idyllic semi-rural childhood. Poetry, especially Byron, was an early passion. His father was Catholic, so after a day school in Headingley he was sent off to the Catholic Stoneyhurst College and then to St. Mary’s, Oscott, near Birmingham, where he studied for a degree of London University, the only degree open to nonAnglicans. With vague thoughts about a profession, he entered legal chambers in London and was called to the Bar in 1857. But he was a half-hearted lawyer – he really wanted to write, and had already published a book of poetry, funded by his uncle. It sold 17 copies! In 1860 he inherited money from this uncle, the distinguished railway engineer Joseph Locke, which freed him to write and travel. He published two books of satirical poetry, praised for their learning and

elegance, and spent a long period in Italy, which he grew to love. On his return to England he continued writing, published two novels, and married the daughter of an Irish landowner, Hester Homan-Mulock. They enjoyed a year-long honeymoon in his beloved Italy, embroiled then in political turmoil. Politics were close to his heart. A staunch, deeply patriotic Tory, he was taken on as leader-writer for the right-wing ‘Standard’ newspaper. As their correspondent he travelled to Rome in 1869 to cover the first Vatican Council and then in 1870 was at the Siege of Paris. He stood for parliament twice as a Conservative, for Taunton in 1865 and Dewsbury in 1880, egged on by Disraeli, but lost. So he focussed on political journalism, founding and editing the National Review, a platform for the Tory party. He was a close friend of Lord Salisbury, and totally in tune with his anti-reform policies. Disliking London, he looked for a rural retreat where he could live like a traditional country squire and write. In 1867 he and Hester fell in love with the picturesque Swinford Old Manor House near Ashford in Kent and bribed their way in. They spent the rest of their lives there creating their perfect garden, the inspiration for his most popular work: ‘The Garden that I Love’ (1894), and its sequels ‘In Veronica’s Garden’ and ‘Lamia’s Winter Quarters’, all running to many editions – idylls in prose, interspersed with poems and whimsical conversations on nature and life. Further volumes of lyrical poetry, poetic criticism (he harshly dismissed old favourites like Tennyson!), satires and dramas, and finally an autobiography flowed from his pen – over 40 books in all. In 1896, after other candidates had been rejected or had refused, he was appointed Poet Laureate, on Lord Salisbury’s recommendation as Prime Minister. The press had a field day mocking his work, picking on various dud lines particularly in his later ‘official’ odes,

and even poking fun at his short stature (about five feet). But he was impervious: confident, sure of his own worth and the rightness of his views on Queen, country, empire, and literature. He revisited Leeds in 1904 to receive an honorary degree from the newly created University, and gave a characteristic lecture on the ‘progressive lunacy’ of giving poor children free meals in schools. He died in 1913, on the brink of the great upheaval of the First World War. He was included in a famous anthology of bad poetry, but the kind view is that at his best he was ‘a true but not a great poet’ – you can taste his work yourself now on the internet.

n the morning of March 20th there will a total eclipse of the Sun, visible along a narrow band in the North Atlantic. The nearest place to see totality on land is the Faroe Islands. In Leeds the eclipse will be seen as a strong partial, with up to 90% of the Sun’s diameter covered … if clouds don’t spoil it.The Moon will start to cover the Sun at about 8:30 and to build to maximum coverage an hour later. The event will finish about an hour after that. Looking at the Sun directly damages the eyes. ‘Eclipse glasses’, purpose-manufactured from a special highly reflective film, can be obtained for a few pounds. A ‘pin-hole camera’ can project an image of the Sun. Another way to observe is to project the Sun’s image produced by a small telescope onto a white surface. The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) Collection is renowned throughout the world for its iconic and historically significant images, as well as examples of the technology that shaped photography from the 1820s to the present day. It forms part of the National Photography Collection, cared for by the National Media Museum in Bradford, where highlights will be displayed in the exhibition ‘Drawn by Light: The Royal Photographic Collection’ from 20th March – 21st June 2015. Germany, ‘Drawn by Light’ first appeared at Media Space in the Science Museum. It is presented in collaboration with the ReissEngelhorn-Museen, where it will go on display in 2017. Among more than 250 remarkable, rare and sometimes unique objects, the exhibition features key artefacts that tell the story of the development of photography: Nièpce heliographs from the 1820s, the first commercially published book illustrated by photographs William Henry Fox Talbot’s camera lucida sketchbook, ‘The Pencil of

Nature’ (1844 – 1846), and seminal works such as Oscar Rejlander’s ‘The Two Ways of Life’ (1857). Many historically significant figures from photography are represented, such as Nièpce and Talbot, as well as Julia Margaret Cameron, Roger Fenton, Lewis Carroll and Hugh Welch Diamond. And the collection is constantly expanding: renowned contemporary photographers whose work features include Don McCullin, Terry O’Neill and Martin Parr among others. Steve McCurry’s famed ‘Afghan Girl’ image, taken in 1984, is the most recent acquisition and was added to the RPS Collection in November 2014. “This is a great opportunity for visitors to see some of the world’s most important photography, by some of the greatest photographers, in the collection’s home, as well as to explore the rest of this wonderful museum”, said Michael Pritchard, Director-General of The Royal Photographic Society. The exhibition is part of the 2015 Art in Yorkshire programme. Entry is free. For further details visit www.nationalmediamuseum. org.uk

If ever there’s a discussion of serious acting talent in modern American cinema there is one name that is ever present among the usual suspects; Pacino. Now the Oscar winning actor, director and ‘king of gangster movies’ is heading to Leeds for an intimate black tie dinner event on Saturday 16th May at Elland Road.

ith a career spanning four decades, Al Pacino has starred in many great films (and a few not so great ones) and he is never less than an utterly electrifying screen presence. Pacino is the whole package; a real actor with honest-to-god, heavy duty chops, a bona fide, charisma-oozing movie star. Coming to prominence in the 1970s, arguably the most exciting era in Hollywood history, Pacino found his first big screen part in the controversial ‘Panic in Needle Park’ which was swiftly followed by the role that would make his name and usher him into the annals of cinematic greatness - Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’. While Pacino later became known for the scenerychewing, shouty, bombastic acting style he brought to some of his famous roles, his work in ‘The Godfather’ is something else altogether. It is a master class of careful control and subtlety and his Michael Corleone is a chilling portrait of a man corrupted and consumed by dark forces. He would reprise the role in ‘The Godfather Part 2’ which also featured another rising star of his generation, Robert De Niro, although the pair had no scenes together. For that clash of the cinematic titans film fans would have to wait until 1995 and Michael Mann’s excellent ‘Heat’. Following ‘The Godfather’, Pacino continued his winning streak by portraying his ruthless crime boss’s polar opposite as the titular ‘Serpico’, a morally upright cop standing up to corruption, and delivered another outstanding turn as hapless would be bank robber, Sonny in Sidney Lumet’s superb ‘Dog Day Afternoon’, a stranger than fiction true life heist movie. Perhaps Pacino’s most iconic role came with 1983’s ‘Scarface’,

directed by Brian De Palma. While I personally don’t particularly regard the film as a high water mark for either director or star, with its garish 80’s production design, lurid ultra-violence, and Pacino’s hysterically over the top performance as the cokeaddled, machine gun-toting Tony Montana, it’s certainly unforgettable. Better, I think, and one of my favourite Pacino movies is ‘Carlito’s Way’ which saw Pacino and De Palma reunite a decade after ‘Scarface’ to tell the story of another Latino gangster returning to his old stomping ground after a stint in prison and trying to go straight. In gangland set films Pacino is usually the capo, the kingpin, a made guy. So it was an intriguing switch to see him convincingly inhabiting the role of down-at-heel mobster also-ran Lefty in ‘Donnie Brasco’. Lefty is a

pitiable figure and Pacino imbues the character with vulnerability, wounded pride and pathos. Of course, in a classic case of Academy oversight, Pacino belatedly received his Oscar for ‘Scent of a Woman’, after seven previous nominations. A decent enough film with a typically spirited performance from Pacino but few would regard it among his best work. With over fifty acting credits to his name there’s neither the time nor the space here for a comprehensive career retrospective but I’ve flagged up a few personal highlights from Al Pacino’s remarkable life in movies. ‘An Experience with…Al Pacino’ , will be at the Leeds Centenary Pavilion at Elland Road on Saturday 16th May. Organised by Olexy Productions, this is the first time Al Pacino will have hosted such a dinner in the UK. The event will include a revealing Q&A with the star as he shares anecdotes from his illustrious film career. Having played the region’s most infamous monarch, Richard III, several times on Broadway, Al feels he has a connection with Yorkshire. “‘I’m really looking forward to once again meeting UK fans, and this time from the north”, said Al. “I love Yorkshire and Leeds is a fantastic

city. I can’t wait to share untold stories with my fans in this intimate setting.” “Pacino has already stated that he will never write an autobiography, so this event is a very rare opportunity to hear directly from the star on his life and his outstanding movie career”, said Stephen Oleksewycz, Olexy Productions. Several different tickets are available, starting from £125 +VAT, and all include a threecourse dinner. Platinum (£2,000) and VIP (£1,250) tickets offer opportunities to meet and be photographed with Pacino. Guests will also be able to buy exclusive Al Pacino memorabilia during the charity auction . A percentage of the profits will be donated to the charity Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust. Tickets are available from www. olexyfresh.com/

om Conti leads the cast of Twelve Angry Men as it gets set to give its verdict across the UK. The acclaimed production is at Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 7th to Saturday 11th April, following its record-breaking run at the Garrick Theatre in the West End. Lauded as one of the great ‘must-see’ movies of all time, Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men originated as a television play and has been successfully adapted for film, radio and stage. The 1957 Academy Award-nominated film version starred, and was produced by, Henry Fonda. Twelve Angry Men follows twelve jurors who have murder

on their minds and a life in their hands as they decide the fate of a young delinquent accused of killing his father. But what appears to be an open and shut case soon becomes a dilemma for the twelve, as their prejudices and preconceived ideas about the accused, the trial and each other turn the tables every which way, until the nail-biting climax. Directed by Christopher Haydon, Artistic Director of The Gate Theatre, Notting Hill, Oscar nominee Tom Conti returns as Juror Number Eight, the role made famous by Henry Fonda. He will be joined by jurors Andrew Lancel (Frank Foster in Coronation Street), Robert Duncan (Gus Hedges in Drop The Dead Donkey), Andrew Frame (PC Hargreaves in EastEnders), David Calvitto (whose theatre credits include These Shining Lives and The Odd Couple), Mark Carter (Hollyoaks, Utopia and The Knock) and Sean Power, (Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Fright Night 2). Jon Carver, who has had a recurring role in Doctors, returns to play The Guard. The rest of the jury will be made up of Denis

Composed by one of Broadway’s most successful and enduring partnerships, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, the score is studded with some of the most powerful, uplifting and moving music ever written for the stage, including ‘If I Loved You,’ ‘June is Bustin’ Out All Over,’ and ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’ Set in a tight-knit fishing community on the New England coast, Carousel revolves around the ill-fated affair between Billy Bigelow

Tyrone Huggin’s critically acclaimed story of an elderly Caribbean beekeeper and a dysfunctional wealthy teenager comes to The Carriageworks, Leeds, on Thursday 19th March. eworked with striking visual design and projections by Timothy Bird and sound design from Joseph Roberts, ‘The Honey Man’ is a funny but highly moving exploration of Black British identity, ecological destruction and friendship that crosses generational and cultural divides. Through the story of an unlikely friendship between an elderly beekeeper and a troubled young teenager, the play looks at the relationship between two people on the fringes of society. In a derelict cottage in the grounds of a country house, ageing Caribbean recluse, Honey Man, tries in vain to save his colony of bees. His life is set to change when fiery teenage heiress Misty (Beatrice Allen) charges into his world and challenges all he knows. Initially, the two clash, but over time, an unlikely friendship develops. Events take a dramatic turn when an antique painting reveals a secret that connects their lives in ways they never imagined, shedding light on the histories hidden in art and the connections between English heritage and the history of slavery. “Over the last few years I’ve become aware that a generation of ‘digital natives’ has grown up surrounded by digital technology”, said Tyrone Huggins. “I began

imagining how it would be for a youngster from that generation to encounter someone who was almost locked in another time and way of life. I was also interested by how the momentby-moment connectedness of

The play explores Black British identity, ecological destruction and friendship that crosses generational and cultural divides the digital world was squeezing out time to reflect and bringing its own form of loneliness. The Honey Man allowed me to bring two characters together who appear to have nothing in common. And, because neither has anyone else, they have to search for what they can share; survival of the bees and their British colonial history.” Tyrone Huggins co-founded the experimental Impact Theatre Co-operative. He has performed in numerous theatre productions across the UK including, most recently, ‘Electra’ with Kristin Scott Thomas at the Old Vic, and the UK tour of ‘Of Mice and Men’ with Matthew Kelly. He has written 12 plays including ‘Emigrating Home’ for The Bush and ‘Choo Choo Ch’Boogie’ for Bolton Octagon and is currently working with Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

communities, and this is reflected in her work. “As with my films, I am driven by a desire to eradicate injustice and believe art and culture are powerful tools in helping to bring about change – be it personal or political”, said Yvette. The exhibition features a screening of her ground-breaking film, ‘The Battle for Orgreave’. The award-winning documentary for Channel 4 was fuelled by the 1984 Rotherham riot, when many miners were charged and eventually acquitted for their part in the incident. ‘The Battle for Orgreave’ examines the trial as well as the economic and political aspects of the strike. Vanson took the miners back to the place where the confrontation with the police had happened on 18th June 1984, enabling the miners to re-enact their experiences of that day. The exhibition runs until 26th April. For more

Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya hits the Playhouse stage in a vibrant, newly commissioned version by playwright Samuel Adamson, whose plays and adaptations include All About My Mother, Southwark Fair, Pillars of the Community, Clocks & Whistles, and Gabriel.

Pictured: David Ganly

Directed by Associate Director Mark Rosenblatt, David Ganly as Vanya leads a wonderful ensemble cast, in this dark, funny, romantic exploration of cross-purposed love, bitter jealousy and family dysfunction. An illustrious professor returns to his country estate (run for years by other family

members) with his beautiful young wife. Already that spells a recipe for disaster. With the extended family and family doctor all brought together under one roof, resentments start to bubble to the surface, old wounds are reopened. People start to re-examine their lives and the choices they made. Thwarted ambitions emerge.

“This is a great play”, said Mark Rosenblatt. “ When I read it I was struck by how wise, funny and sad it was. A play rarely covers the whole spectrum of life like this. Chekov puts all the characters on stage and lets them revolve around each other. It touches on getting old, making one’s mark in life, falling in love – the rich tapestry of life. But people find themselves at cross-purposes and, as a result, stupid things happen. “Samuel Adamson is a brilliant adapter of Chekov. He has the ability to find a turn of phrase that is of the time yet contemporary. This is a version that is ‘front footed’ rather than reflective or over considered. It is dynamic and funny. Working with Sam we were able to tweak and adjust it during rehearsals. I can guarantee it will play in your head for ages afterwards!” First published in 1897, Uncle Vanya is considered one of the great plays of the 19th century. Appreciated widely for its themes of loneliness, love and hope, it remains an enduringly powerful reflection on the purpose of life. The cast for Uncle Vanya is completed by John Bett, Ryan Kiggell, Anne Lacey, Dorothea Myer-Bennett, Eve Pearce, Georgina Rylance, Graham Turner, and David Leopold. Uncle Vanya is at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 28th February – 21st March.

rish History Month is celebrated throughout March - the month in which St Patrick’s Day is internationally celebrated. An initiative introduced by the Leeds-based Irish Arts Foundation, it is now in its ninth year, and this year goes national – with events taking place in Leeds, London, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Sheffield. It aims to promote knowledge of Irish History and experiences in Britain, to highlight the contributions that Irish people have made to British society, and to introduce new audiences to the vibrancy of Irish arts, heritage and culture.

Particular highlights this year include ‘Tom Crean - Antarctic Explorer: one of Ireland’s unsung heroes…’ He was one of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive the three famous expeditions. The story is brought to life in a dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton on Saturday 7th March. ‘A Year of Festivals in Ireland!’ is an inspirational evening with author Mark Graham who recently completed a quest to attend three festivals a week in Ireland for an entire year! Part of the Headingley LitFest, it’s at The New Headingley Club on Sunday 8th March, 8pm. The annual St Patrick’s Day Parade takes place in Leeds city centre on Sunday 15th March, starting at 11am, followed by food, music, dancing and general celebrating in Millennium Square in the afternoon. Irish/Iranian festival favourite Patrick Monahan

presents a witty, charming family show ‘Adventures in Monahan Land’ at The Carriageworks Theatre on Saturday 21st March at 8pm. Luke Daniels Trio plays Otley Courthouse on Saturday 7th March at 8pm. And there are traditional Irish music sessions on Sunday 8th March, 2pm at The Grove Inn, Back Row (off Water Lane LS11), and on Tuesday 17th, 2pm at The Harp, Cromwell St, Lincoln Green, LS9.

ust look at this picture of Brian Conley – this is a man who is never happier than when he’s on stage! He told us the other day that he had never had a ‘proper’ job. He was born to entertain! In recent years he has taken on leading roles in ‘The Music Man’, ‘Jolson’, ‘Oliver’, ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, but ‘Barnum’ could well be his most challenging role yet. The Cy Coleman-scored musical is about Phineas T Barnum, circus entertainer extraordinaire, known as America’s greatest showman and first millionaire. “Although the setting is a circus, it is actually a love story”, said Brian, “that revolves around

his 44 year marriage, his relationship with his wife (played by Linzi Hateley who starred in ‘Mamma Mia!’, ‘Joseph’, and ‘Carrie’) and how he coped with her death. And there are wonderful songs which help to tell the story and really add to it.” Brian was delighted when Cameron Mackintosh asked him to take on the role of Phineas Barnum. “It’s a show that I’ve always admired. I saw this production in Chichester in 2013 and just loved it. And the wonderful thing with Cameron is that there’s absolutely no skimping; you know everything will be done to the highest degree.” Even the fact that he had to learn how to tightrope walk didn’t put him off! “I started high wire lessons over a year ago and found that it was harder than it looked! The first thing I had to learn was how to fall! It takes a lot of core strength and I still have to practice every day.” Given Brian’s hugely varied entertainment history, he already knew a little magic, how to juggle, and had done some fire-eating – all of which have come in handy for this role.

“This is a wonderful show”, said Brian. “We have a really talented company, including proper circus performers, and an eleven-piece orchestra. The Victorian set looks amazing and on arrival the team works through the night to set it up. We even bring our own floor! “Barnum was a fascinating character, full of weird and wild ideas. He was famous for his threering circus – he knew that no one would be able to take it all in on one visit, they would have to come back to see what was happening in the other rings!” Brian is touring with Barnum until August, then what? Apparently there is a new TV serial for BBC on the cards. Barnum is at Leeds Grand Theatre from

his year, for the first time, The Picture Library at Leeds Art Gallery is extending its selection days to quarterly, two-day weekend events. Leeds Art Gallery is one of the few organisations in the country that runs such a lending scheme. For just £48 for a year (£98 for two) you can become temporary custodian of a wonderful work of art and it has hundreds of original artworks to choose from. According to The Times, Leeds Art Gallery has ‘probably the best collection of twentieth century British art outside London’. Set up with the aim of fostering an interest in original British art, The Picture

Library has been offering anyone based in Yorkshire the opportunity to enjoy original art at home for over 50 years. “It’s a simple process and our scheme makes it possible for everyone to take up this opportunity”, said Theodore Wilkins, Leeds Art Gallery. “There’s that classic quote from Shirley McLaine in the film Terms of Endearment where she invites Jack Nicholson to view her Renoir – whilst we can’t run to a Renoir, you could enjoy a Terry Frost or a Jacob Kramer in the relaxed setting of your home. Plus, you can change your artwork as many times as you like.” All you have to do to take advantage of the scheme is to attend one of their four selection events, bring proof of identity and your address in Yorkshire and sign up. The costs are £16 per quarter for one artwork or £32 for two – or the discounted annual rate of £48/£98. All works are insured by Leeds Art Gallery, but standard excess charges apply for damage or loss. You

Long before Leeds became the foodie mecca and gastro-paradise it is today there was Hansa’s! stablished in 1986, the longevity of this restaurant is a testament to the welcoming atmosphere, holistic ethos and, of course, the fantastic food that has made it a local institution for nigh on three decades. Featuring an all vegetarian menu of authentic Gujurati cuisine, Hansa’s remains in a league of its own. The food is distinctively different from the ubiquitous anglicised Indian cuisine many of us have grown accustomed to. This is genuine Gujurati style home cooking wherein even complex flavour combinations seem to be presented with an air of honesty and simplicity. Hansa’s, with its all-female, multicultural staff (some of whom have worked with Hansa since she started!) has been trading from the same premises for twenty-nine years – all of which enhances the welcoming, homely, lived in and relaxed ambiance. Rather than poring endlessly over the menu and agonising over what to choose, we capitulated and happily took Hansa up on her offer to bring us a selection of dishes. For starters we received a sharing platter comprising Hansa’s Muthiya (imagine an almost veggie sausage arrangement made with grated cabbage, gram-flour, mustard and sesame seeds), and the fantastic Bharela Marcha deep fried whole Romano peppers filled with spicy mashed potato and crunchy peanut mixture. Both were served with a lovely, piquant red pepper chutney. There was also

the Makai-no-chevdo - sweetcorn stir-fried with mustard seeds and chopped onions; Chilli Paneer, which delivered a tasty kick; and Pani Puri - bite-sized crispy puris filled with chickpeas and onion and served with a tamarind sauce

which are so moreish you’re actually relieved they’re not a readily available snack food as you would never cease popping these delicious little treats into your mouth. Mains-wise we had the Patra Special, which is very special indeed! A unique combination of flavours and texture, patra leaves are stuffed with all kinds of goodness (including chilli, ginger, cumin, coriander, mustard seeds) then compressed and served in a light curry with sweetcorn, really different and mouth-wateringly flavoursome. The Bhaji Paneer was a more familiar dish but no less satisfying, the combination of spinach and Indian cheese never lets you down. I’d previously only experienced lamb koftas but found the veggie

While the food at Hansa’s isn’t in the slightest heavy or stodgy it variation (here made with chickpeas) to be a great alternative in the Bhagat Muthiya with a consistency that chimed well with potatoes in a spicy curry sauce. The Urad was a very fine creamy daal curry which, made with urad beans, was refreshingly different to the usual lentil daal and had the hearty, warming qualities of proper comfort food. While the food at Hansa’s isn’t in the slightest heavy or stodgy it is filling and satisfying. Nevertheless, after polishing off every last scrap of our mains we didn’t hesitate to move on to dessert.

is filling and satisfying.

Khiloni’s Special (named for Hansa’s granddaughter) is a light but subtly rich chocolate cake in chocolate sauce. Somewhat more exotic was the Gajjar Halwa - grated carrots, almonds and raisins with cardamom, and the Fruit Shrikhand - a distinctive tropical fruit salad and yogurt affair, splendidly light and tasty. These topped off the meal perfectly, washed down with spicy, sweet chai. It’s hard to imagine how any aspect of the meal could possibly be improved upon. From the restaurant’s layout and décor to the service and the variety of tastes we were treated to, everything was absolutely top notch. At Hansa’s you’re always in exceptionally good hands and a visit to this exceptional and individual restuarant will leave you feeling well nourished in both body and soul.

Unfortunately, in last month’s edition we reported that applications to build on Moseley (Soggy) Bottom had been turned down. That information was incorrect and Cookridge Residents Action Group (CRAG), along with a number of other confused Cookridge residents, have been in touch to set us straight.

Lent Lunches 2015 Churches Together In Headingley Churches Together in Headingley are once again holding their series of Lenten talks with a light lunch at Headingley Methodist Church Hall (Chapel Street entrance). The theme this year is ‘Singing The Lord’s Song

RAG informed us that: “an initial application to build around 200 houses was refused in November 2014, however just a few weeks later in December, Leeds Council planners gave outline planning permission to build 135 houses on the same site, despite overwhelming objections from Cookridge residents. They did this despite the acknowledged lack of infrastructure, inadequate roads, lack of school places and declining facilities in the area for health care. In addition, getting to use public transport and access from the site will be almost impossible for those with small children and pushchairs, or disabled people. There has been insufficient work done to investigate the sources of water on site, and CRAG has evidence that any build on the land will be to the detriment not only of those who might buy a property there, but that increased risk of flooding to homes and businesses elsewhere in the area is a real possibility.

Insufficient work has been done to investigate the sources of water on site

Leeds Council planners have largely ignored the overwhelming evidence submitted to them by residents and have repeatedly refused to provide information requested through the Freedom of Information legislation, citing unreasonable requests and demands on staff time. In short, they have closed ranks and have failed miserably in terms of giving a voice to residents, despite all the rhetoric about localism. This is not what we pay our Council Taxes for, and residents need to be heard. CRAG is determined to continue to fight this, and wants to make it clear that they will do everything possible to support residents opposed to any form of building on this flood prone site. ‘Call My Wine Bluff’, the first fundraising event for the Adel Neighbourhood Forum, took place the end of January. It was a fun evening with a difference, with ‘The Three Muscateers’ each describing a wine, but only one was telling the truth and six teams had to pick the right one. There were generous tastings of quality wines accompanied by a great cheese board. The event was also the occasion to celebrate Dr Barrie Hopson’s considerable and lengthy contribution as Chairman of the Adel Association. Cllr Barry Anderson presented Barrie with a caricature on behalf of The Forum and Adel Association.

A local resident recently asked whether anything could be done about the sightlines for drivers leaving the Meanwood Road Waste Sort Site, as they felt it was difficult to pull out of the exit safely. NEIL WALSHAW Headingley Ward

Let’s talk bins, recycling and cleaning the neighbourhood One of my objectives, and one shared by Janette and Jonathan since their elections, has been to provide Headingley residents with the environmental service they deserve. We are a complex community with a range of environmental issues, including wildly varying rates of recycling and bins left on streets, which are not only a hazard for people using the pavements but also cause problems for street cleansing.

that alterations had been made to the car park and disabled markings had been removed from four of the bays – freeing up four wide bays to the public. These will not be signposted for specific users as they do not have the capacity to monitor the car park continuously.

The City Council has put a lot of effort into raising recycling rates

The City Council has put a lot of effort into raising recycling rates across the city and these are now approaching 50%. This means we send much less waste to landfill and pay less landfill tax. What Headingley and Hyde Park councillors have successfully argued is that, despite the brutal budget cuts imposed on our communities, those savings should be invested in a better environmental service for our residents. Result! We have been running a successful pilot in the Ash Road area that has increased recycling and is to be extended over the course of this year across Headingley and into Hyde Park. The pilot allows residents to opt into recycling or to have one bin for all rubbish (which is

off street parking so resident permit parking has been provided on street. Recent surveys have shown this is well used and needed following a request from the locality asking the if the parking could be extended, which we currently do not support. “There is a ‘no waiting at any time’ restriction between the end of the marked bays and the site access to the recycling centre to provide a sightline for exiting vehicles. In the past five years there has been one recorded injury accident, it had a severity rating of slight and occurred when a vehicle turned right into the site in front of an oncoming car. No accidents have been recorded by exiting vehicles, which I hope demonstrates that the sightline offers a suitable view of approaching vehicles.” www.barryanderson.yourcllr.com Twitter @barryanderson19 sent to a sorting centre for recyclables to be extracted). Crucially it includes a wheel back service of all wheelie bins, improving the street scene and allowing improved street cleaning. In Hyde Park we will be improving the bin yard service as well, again improving quality of life for residents. The sum total of all these improvements is a ‘win win’ for everybody in Headingley and Hyde Park and I am pleased that residents’ and councillors’ hard work is paying off!

t its worst, aphasia can lead to loss of a job, friends, even family break-up, and for many, feelings of isolation and loneliness are all too common. The charity Connect helps people with aphasia reconnect with everyday life. At their new Leeds drop-in, launching on 5th March, people with aphasia can come together in a relaxing environment to share stories, offer ideas, support each other and rebuild confidence. Simply meeting in a friendly setting will be an invaluable lifeline for many, and it is an approach that is supported by doctors and speech and language therapists.

Drop-in will be led by four ‘peer leaders’ from the Leeds area; each has had a stroke and now lives with aphasia. They will be supported by trained volunteers from Leeds Beckett University. atie West recently found a letter written by her grandfather, whom she had never met. It gave her his address from many years ago and enclosed with it was a picture of a new family, a family she never knew existed. It dawned on her that her father had siblings he had never met. He is 80 next year and she would love to be able to solve the mystery.

Can you help? Do you recognize anyone in the photograph? At some stage of his life, her grandfather, Ronald Holt, lived at 2 Cambridge Gardens, Bramley, Leeds. He was born around 1914, married Stella Hodgson, and had two children, Ronald and June. For a number of years he operated a garage and had a beard! That is all the information Katie has. ‘The Armed Man’, a Mass for Peace, was commissioned by the Royal Armouries, and written by composer Karl Jenkins for the millennium celebrations. A rich and varied piece, it offers a hopeful message for a world without war, and was voted best piece by a living composer by listeners of Classic FM. (Listen to it at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Oc8bc-bA1JM) While the main aim is for people to enjoy coming together to sing, Lawnswood Community Choir also performs regularly. In a new departure, they are hosting a Come and Sing event on 20th June. It is open to all and will be led by

Imelda Shirley, a highly experienced teacher and choral conductor, who has vast experience in leading choral workshops. The choir, part of the Friends of Lawnswood School association, is open to parents, pupils, teachers and members of the wider community. They meet Thursdays, 7 - 9pm during term time at Lawnswood School. A friendly and informal choir, they sing a wide range of music including folk songs, pop, jazz and world music, under the guidance of choir leader, Tricia Kyte. If you would like to join them for this day of singing, go along and enjoy the rehearsal and early evening performance at St. Chad’s Church,

Far Headingley. You do not need any previous experience of the work. You are also welcome to rehearse with the choir in the weeks leading up to 20th June. For full details and a booking form, please contact Janie Percy-Smith at percysmithjanie@ gmail.com

The old concept that Freemasonry is a secret society has long since been banished. It is a society of men intent on helping others, not just Freemasons but ordinary people in need of assistance but without the ability to find it. core principle of Freemasonry is charity. In fact, it is the second largest charitable contributor in the UK - the largest being The National Lottery. It is first to provide relief in disasters, often responding within 24 hours. The Air Ambulance Services are supported by Masonic donations, as are Cancer Research and many other worthy causes. Over Christmas they were inundated with requests to help all types of good causes financially – from animal charities to a whole range of health issues. Today there are more widowers than ever before and this trend is predicted to rise by 60% in the next 15 years. Men often have less contact with friends and family than women

of a similar age and are more likely to experience a high degree of loneliness, making them more socially isolated. This is another area where Freemasonry can help – you’re never alone with Freemasonry. On a local level, a huge number of charities benefit from Masonic grants, including Learning Partnerships in North Leeds and The Sick Children’s Trust at the LGI (Clarendon Wing), who received help from Allerton Lodge in Headingley last year.

Each Lodge has its own ‘Lodge Almoner’ who looks after the needs of each lodge member on a personal basis, as well as maintaining contact with the widows of former lodge members. Allerton Lodge in Headingley is holding an Open Evening on Monday 13th April, starting at 7pm. Men aged 21 and over are always welcome. Please let them know if you are interested in attending. Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice recently launched ‘Challenge24’ a new fundraising campaign that invites you to take on a personal challenge for 24 hours. The aim is to raise both money and awareness of the incredible 24-hour care provided by Wheatfield’s nurses.

The Chevin Cross The cross on the Chevin, first installed in 1968, has become a well-known Easter symbol of hope. It was the brainchild of the Otley Council of Christian Churches and is an example of a co-operative initiative, which has become a source of inspiration for many people.

At least 50 people are needed to pull the cross into place “We are looking for enthusiastic, creative people to take on this challenge to see what they can do for 24 hours during the week of 9th March”, said Georgie Abbott, Senior Hospice Fundraiser. “Participants can approach this alone or get together with a group of friends to rack up a 24 hours challenge together. So far we have people baking, tweeting and giving up caffeine and sugar. It’s the perfect opportunity to test your stamina and determination!” Charlotte Stern (above) has challenged herself to stay silent for 24 hours! “I have always been a chatterbox”, she said. When I heard about the challenge I suggested to my team that I stay silent for 24 hours when they all doubted I could do this it made me even more determined! It will be hard at work - but then I always have email! My fiancé will probably sponsor me the most money for a bit

of peace and quiet!” Established over 35 years ago, Wheatfields not only provides specialist medical care to ease pain and discomfort, but also offers people and their families real emotional support during what can be an extremely difficult time. Last year alone the hospice provided care for over 2,500 people living with an incurable illness in the Leeds area. To take part in Challenge24, just register at www.sueryder.org/ challenge24. Every £240 raised will cover the cost of a nurse providing 24 hour care for patients when they need it most.

At least 50 people are needed to pull the cross into place at Surprise View above Otley (Grid Ref. SE 203442) where it will remain for four weeks throughout the Easter celebrations. This year it will be erected on Saturday 21st March at 9.30am. All helpers should be at Surprise View, opposite The Royalty, at around 9.15am. On Easter Sunday morning 5th April, the usual sunrise service will be held at the Chevin Cross at 7am.

Home & Garden

A busy month for gardeners but undoubtedly one of my favourites.

Be sure

Lawns

to raise

As the temperature rises, the grass begins to grow and March is often the month when we can start to mow our lawns again. Be sure to raise the height of your cutting blades so the first few cuts are gentle. If you have worm casts on the surface, brush them in with a stiff brush before mowing. This is an ideal month to lay new turf too.

Sowing and Planting Sowing seeds is the best bit of the gardening year for me. Every day I eagerly check my seed trays for signs of new life. On your windowsill you can plant seed of Celeriac, Peppers and Chillis, Sweetcorn,

It may be early in the year

Tomatoes and herbs such as Basil, Chives, Coriander and Marjoram. Some flowers will also enjoy an early start indoors. Try Sunflowers, Snap Dragons and Zinnias. You can plant onion and shallot setts straight outside now too, taking care to ensure the tips are just under the soil, as Blackbirds are tempted to pull them up if anything protrudes above the surface.

Prepare for Summer Maintenance jobs such as pressure washing the paths and patio to remove algae, or taking the netting off ponds are good energetic tasks for cold, bright days and will help to prepare your garden to be used again. Fine days are also perfect for painting fences

It may be early in the year but there are still wonderful gardens to explore and in Leeds we are blessed with several excellent examples within striking distance. One of the best for early Spring interest is the RHS garden at Harlow Carr where plantings of Dogwoods, Hellebores, Bulbs and Heathers lift your mood with wonderful warm colours however cold the temperature.

TCV’s Skelton Grange Environment Centre has a great programme of events lined up for children and adults to get involved in and enjoy learning in the natural environment.

kelton Grange offers an inspiring setting for both creativity and fun. There’s the special Bushcraft event for adults, an opportunity to learn knife skills, fire lighting and tracking games. Plus there are the ever popular bushcraft days for children, and a whole week of outdoor playscheme fun, with den building, campfires and woodland crafts – there’s even a two-day adventure with a sleepover! The centre is delighted to welcome back wirework sculptor Chris Moss, who will teach you how to create amazing life-sized chickens or ducks that you will be able to take home. It also welcomes Annie Russell for a Lino printing master class. Her nature-inspired prints are spectacular. “My work is largely figurative, drawing inspiration from nature and other hobbies, like gardening and woodwork”, said Annie. “I favour woodcuts and linocuts, because I love the way that these techniques combine practical craft, planning, creativity and composition. I like the physical process of carving a piece of lino or wood.”

Skelton Grange offers an inspiring setting for both creativity and fun.

Master willow weaver Phil Bradley (above) also returns. An excellent teacher and craftsman, Phil will present a willow weaving and sculpture workshop, where participants can make a deer or hare for their garden. Craig Worrall of Edible Leeds will lead two Wild Food Walks around the Centre’s beautiful wildlife area. You will learn about the abundance of edible plants and fungi available in Yorkshire. Craig will prepare some delicious food to share, as well as preparing foragings from the event. All proceeds from the workshops will go towards the charitable work of The Conservation Volunteers, improving people’s lives, health and skills through the natural environment. More Bulbs in Adel Adel Primary School children and local residents recently planted over 500 Spring bulbs at the junction of Tile Lane and Sir George Martin Drive. Local Ward Councillor Billy Flynn was on hand, together with a great turn out of residents on a lovely, but cold day.

“The children who planted the bulbs last year still talk about it”, said Rebecca Walton, who runs the gardening club with Mrs Roberts. “Hopefully this year’s children will feel the same when they see the results next Spring.”

t Gemma’s Hospice’s popular ‘Open Gardens’ programme is now open for registration! Once again, here’s your opportunity to display your gardening skills, and explore other gardens around the city too. The hospice invites you to allow people access to your private garden, for one or several days between June and September. Large or small, paved or turfed, whatever your style they’d love you take part! Every Summer, this flourishing initiative raises thousands of pounds through entry fees, all of which go directly towards caring for patients with life-limiting illnesses. If, like thousands of others across the country, you love your outdoor space, then this is the initiative for you. We’ve always loved our lawns and been proud

of our pruning, and in recent years we’ve grown even more passionate about gardening. Spending time in the fresh air and getting back to nature provides relaxing time

away from our busy, technological lives. And, younger gardeners are sprouting up everywhere! A survey of 25-35 year olds revealed that gardening was now even more popular than going to the cinema! Exploring other people’s gardens is a great way to spend a weekend and get inspiration for your own patch of greenery. To launch the Open Gardens season, the Hospice’s own awardwinning gardens will also open to the public. Visit the hospice on 27th June and explore the grounds – there will be plants and gifts for sale, and much more. You can register for the scheme now at www.st-gemma.co.uk. Album Review:

Fran Wyburn – Little Moments

With this acoustic folk gem of an EP, Fran Wyburn appears to have emerged fully formed onto the fecund local folk scene with a bewitching voice and cannily astute songwriting nous. Intriguing from the first listen, ‘Little Moments’ continues to open up to deeper levels of appreciation. With beautifully rendered, heartfelt and evocative songs of love, longing and loss, the EP mines its material

from the minutia of close relationships and is emotionally stirring without becoming cloying or mawkish. Opening/title track, Little Moments begins deceptively with sparse guitar and gently lilting vocals before gathering pace and taking flight with propulsive fingerpicking and overlapping harmonies.

‘Growing Away’ sees more of that fine guitar work augmented by cello and with a distinctive harmonised melody, the song has the familiar feel of a forgotten folk-pop classic with just the merest hint of a country twang. The delicate and enchanting ‘The Well’ highlights the choral quality of the multi-layered vocals and ‘November Night’ with its unexpected arrangement and expressive strings somehow recalls Leonard Cohen. Closing track ‘Days Like This’ is an endearing and heart-warming tale of lovers embracing each other’s foibles and optimistically looking forward and the tune skips along very pleasantly. The skill of the songwriting and the musicianship on show here is worn lightly, almost with an air of nonchalance, but though the EP thematically resides in ‘Little Moments’ this impressive handful of songs is far from trivial and warrants wide listenership.

This incredibly powerful and stirring film chronicles a monumenttal moment of the civil rights movement – Dr Martin Luther King’s campaign to secure equal voting rights, culminating in the historic 1965 march from the city of Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. A law had been passed which supposedly guaranteed AfricanAmericans the right to vote but this was far from the reality with many black people, particularly in the south, facing intimidation and obstruction to their participation in democracy. Following a meeting with president Lyndon Johnson, who pledges support but insists the time is not right to push through further legislation on the issue, King resolves to take the fight to the heated and contentious heart of the conflict. He focuses his campaign of peaceful protest and civil disobedience where it’s needed most and where, it is hoped, it will have the desired impact.

Director Ava DuVernay has crafted an impressive and impassioned film that does righteous justice to the real life events depicted and the characters concerned and there is a forceful sense of gathering momentum

leading to the climatic march. Perhaps the most striking thing about Selma, though, is the absolutely magnificent performance at its centre by David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King. In his portrayal of Dr King, Oyelowo has overcome the common challenge of playing a known historical figure (namely, that it can amount to little more than an impersonation or an exercise in mimicry) and has somehow distilled the essence of his character. Whenever he’s on screen, especially in scenes of oratory, one is struck by his commanding and inspirational presence, his skill as a communicator. He’s like a lightning rod of passion, belief, energy and conviction that draws all eyes and ears to him. Interestingly and bravely the film touches briefly on the sensitive subject of King’s marital infidelities and their impact on his marriage. Though some might consider it risky to puncture the aura of saintliness that surrounds King, I contend that it successfully restores a measure

of humanity that is in danger of being lost if the myth obscures the man. By showing King as fallible and as susceptible to moments of weakness as any of us he becomes relatable as we are able to better identify with him. For figures such as King to remain as heroic and inspirational as they are we must be able to believe that they are truly one of us. Reflecting on the film after watching it I was reminded of Spielberg’s Lincoln, another film focusing on a pivotal moment in the life of an iconic historical figure (another notable performance) and which, at its heart, concerns the battle for equality and civil rights. Selma highlights the necessity of telling these stories of upstanding people with the courage of their convictions, of leaders we can truly believe in and rally behind. It’s important to be reminded of these men and women and their deeds, of their battles hard fought and won. In dark times such as these we need leaders such as Martin Luther King and we require films such as Selma.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Adel Cricket Club on Church Lane, next to St John the Baptist Church, is a thriving, long established (1876!) club at both senior and junior levels, and an integral part of the community.

Is There an Allergy Sufferer in Your Family? Allergy UK’s recent annual awareness week drew people’s attention to the plight of allergy sufferers across the country. Allergens in the home can cause conditions like allergic rhinitis and asthma, but you can help to reduce symptoms and keep them under control by following a few useful tips. • Apparently, the average bed can house over 10,000 house dust mites. Cover duvets and pillows with anti-allergy covers and encase the mattress in a barrier cover. Wash all bed linen weekly at 60 degrees using non-bio detergent. • Keep bedrooms well-ventilated and

he club is very family focused and has a highly organised junior section catering for the under 9s to under 17s. It regularly attracts over 100 junior members to Monday night coaching. These sessions go beyond teaching cricket skills, encouraging lifelong discipline, fitness and sportsmanship values too. They also run fun cricket camps during the school holidays. The Club fields three senior teams in the Airedale and Wharfedale Senior Cricket League, a senior team in the Dales Council Cricket League, and maintains strong links with Leeds Beckett University, Leeds University, and Yorkshire County Cricket Club through their coaching programmes. In fact, one of their pro coaches, Andy Laws, will be playing for the club this season. Both senior and junior sections are always looking for new players – whether you’re an established player or new to the game, there is a place for you at Adel!

Both senior and junior sections are always looking for new players

The club also has a great social programme featuring race nights, wine tasting, and the renowned Adel Cricket Club Beer Festival. The current development plan includes the continued revamping of the cricket squares, and a new drainage system. The next major goal is the redevelopment of the Pavillion, to incorporate additional showers and changing rooms, plus ladies facilities, and a refurbished kitchen area. In addition the club is launching a new sponsorship drive to help keep their valuable community work going and is offering a number of exciting sponsorship opportunities. If you have a local business, get in touch and see how your association with Adel Cricket Club can be mutually beneficial. windows slightly open at night, and air the room in the morning - except during pollen season when windows should be kept closed early morning and evening • Consider replacing curtains with roller blinds. Curtains should be washed every three months at high temperature • Soft toys should be kept in a drawer rather than on the bed and should be washed weekly at 60 degrees with non-bio powder or liquid. • Carpets should be vacuumed weekly, but this increases the amount of house dust mite allergen in the air for 20 minutes. if possible, ask someone else to vacuum and wait 20 minutes before re-entering the room. One of our advertisers, Declan Faherty of DJF Plastering, is aiming to complete the 190-mile coast to coast in just six days! Leaving on 4th May he plans to walk an average of 32 miles a day – which he estimates will take him about 12 hours (excluding breaks). He completed this walk in eight days last year and is convinced he can shave off two days. Declan is undertaking the walk in aid of cystic fibrosis. “I have a friend whose son has cystic fibrosis, so I’m doing it for him and the thousands of others suffering from the same condition”, he told us. “I hope to raise at least £3,000 and have set up a Justgiving account so as many people as possible can sponsor me.” Declan will set out from St Bees in

Cumbria and head for Robin Hood’s Bay, travelling on his own and sleeping outdoors each night. If he is successful in completing the walk in six days (most walkers would take about 14!) he will try to do it in five next year!

Through the two-year partnership, YCCC players, staff and supporters will be encouraged to get behind Yorkshire Cancer Research and play their part in supporting and promoting a range of activities aimed at reducing the impact of cancer in Yorkshire. The partnership aims to reach the full cricket community, raising awareness of the disease that kills 253 people every week in Yorkshire and that has survival rates below the national average. “We believe that we can make a real difference by creating much needed awareness to improve cancer outcomes in Yorkshire”, said Andy Dawson, Commercial Director at YCCC. We will be planning lots of

activity both at Headingley Cricket Ground and through recreational cricket around the region.” One of the main initiatives will be focused on raising

awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers across the 747 cricket clubs in the county. Members of the Yorkshire first team will act as ambassadors and will dedicate time to support projects across the county. Supporters of the Club will be able to use health and wellbeing clinics that will be created at Headingley Cricket Ground on matchdays. And, as part of the agreement, Yorkshire Cancer Research will provide a dedicated community officer, who will work on specific projects with The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, which engages with over 35,000 children every year promoting healthy lifestyles.

Kathryn (42) and Martin (43) adopted seven year old James (not his real name) when he was five years old. When the idea of adopting arose, Kathryn immediately thought of Barnardo’s as her father had grown up in a Barnardo’s home.

For more information about fostering or adopting with Barnardo’s, go to: www.barnardos.org.uk/ fosteringandadoption

Adoption

“I know it sounds strange”, said Kathryn, “but one night I dreamt that I was the mother of a small boy who we’d adopted. I had this tremendous sense of peace and joy and it wouldn’t leave me. I knew that adoption was for us. At first Martin said he didn’t know if he could love a child that wasn’t biologically his own. But we decided to look into it further.” Having discussed things with friends who had adopted children, they met up with a Barnardo’s worker and, after going through the assessment process, they were approved as adopters just six months later. “We were told that the approval process was intrusive”, continued Kathryn. “Yes, you are scrutinised, but for us I can honestly say it was very pleasant and, dare I say, fun. I put that down to the experience and commitment of Barnardo’s. For us it was an extremely positive process.” Kathryn and Martin were shown a video of James, a lively five year old. “He looked wide-eyed and beautiful”, said Kathryn. “We immediately wanted to meet him. That first meeting was wonderful. We met after school at his foster carers’ home. He had an awkward way of saying hello and spoke to us through his teddy. Then he got a board game out and we played - it was lovely.” There were several more introductory days before James moved to his new home in Yorkshire. “James’ foster carers were such lovely people it hurt to take him away. That first night we didn’t sleep, we took it in shifts to be near him and listen to him breathing. It reminded me of what friends had told me - it’s like when you first bring a baby home. Martin was able to take four months off work so we had a blissful Summer getting to know each other. It was a very precious time.” There have been many highs since James became part of their family. “I believe he understood from day one that we were his forever family. There have been lots of precious moments – taking him to buy shoes for the first time, giving him his first bath, reading his first bedtime story. Walking to school now James grabs your hand - it’s just magical.” When James went to live with Kathryn and Martin he was not reaching his milestones at school. He refused to write any letters and couldn’t count. Now he’s flourishing.

He has a passion for learning and can’t get enough of books. “Adoption has been like therapy for James. Before he came to us he had some behavioural problems, but with love, encouragement and security, he doesn’t identify as that boy any more. We have a really deep and special love, it doesn’t matter that the biology isn’t there. We are the luckiest people in the world to have found James and that is thanks to Barnardo’s. We know it’s their passion to place children with safe, secure and loving families. The support throughout the process, the speed with which they make things happen and the after support are all brilliant.”

When you change a child’s life by adopting, we’ll help you deal with the changes in yours.

Younger Life

Freemasons Local author Loretta Hourigan recently released her first children’s book, ‘The Adventures of Cameron Carter, Knight in the Forest’, in which Cameron discovers a mysterious tent that leads him to embark on a series of thrilling challenges. he e-book is aimed at readers aged 7-11 and is the first in a series of four that is guaranteed to see children discard their gadgets and race outdoors to reconnect with nature! Loretta claims that it has the potential to be a real catalyst for change. “I’m so proud of it”, she said, “and hugely excited by the notion that not only does it inspire children to read, but also fires them up about the possibilities that await outdoors – two things that children aren’t doing nearly enough of these days!”

Not only does it inspire children to read, but also fires them up about the possibilities that await outdoors

The idea of an exciting adventure series set in a child’s back garden developed after she was approached by parents who were concerned about their children’s reluctance to play outdoors. Children from all walks of life will identify with Cameron. He will fire up their imagination and open up endless possibilities of thrilling outdoor adventures. Loretta, whose career spans over 18 years in the fitness industry, both as a personal trainer and lecturer in Exercise & Fitness, is planning to approach schools to talk about the book and the benefits of outdoor play. If you would like Loretta to come to your school, please contact her at Loretta.hourigan@sky.com ‘The Adventures of Cameron Carter, Knight in the Forest’ is available from Amazon.

Support Lineham Farm Lineham Farm Children’s Centre in Eccup is now able to offer six more residential places, thanks to a donation of £4,500 from the Zetland Lodge Freemasons, based in Headingley.

The donation will also enable the charity to unlock other pots of funding, allowing three more projects to start at the farm. Lineham Farm provides residential breaks for disadvantaged and disabled primary school children, and welcomes over 100 children every year. It has excellent facilities, including an indoor climbing wall with a special disabled access climb, outdoor low and high ropes course, cycling tracks, an art room and a small farm with ponies, chickens, sheep, goats and pigs. Children can enjoy a break in the countryside and increase their confidence through trying out new experiences.
