We had a couple of very small issues and Kieran’s comment was, "they only become real problems if we don’t fix them", which he promptly did. JACOB KRAMER (1892-1962) ARTIST

In 1921 when Leeds Art Gallery reopened after the First World War, some striking new works went on show. Two pictures in particular stood out and provoked controversy – ‘The Day of Atonement’ and ‘Hear Our Voice, O Lord Our God’, both by the young Jewish artist Jacob Kramer, born in Russia but brought up in Leeds. The Jewish community in Leeds had commissioned them as gifts to the Gallery, and almost a century later they remain among the most powerful images in the city’s collection, still resonant today and a reminder of the tragic story of this gifted and passionate Leeds artist. acob Kramer was born in the

It’s NOT a way to find new business, pitch your product or to sell your business. Jelly was first established in 2006 by two New York freelancers as they discussed the drawbacks of working alone – namely the lack of company. They decided to invite a group of freelancers to bring their laptops and work together in their apartment for the day, and called it ‘Jelly’ as they were eating jelly beans at the time! Jelly started in the UK in 2009 and today over 50 groups meet regularly, from

Edinburgh to Plymouth. Nicola Sykes, a home-based marketing consultant from Oakwood, and Bhupinder Dev, a local government town planner who also often works from home in Moortown, heard about Jelly and decided to set one up in North Leeds. “Working from home can feel isolating and a change of scenery and opportunity to meet new people is always good”, said Nicola. “That’s why we looked into a suitable venue for Jelly and were lucky to find a space conducive to both working and socialising.”

This month we thought we’d shine a light on an aesthetic that has literally endured for millennia. Referring to it simply as a ‘style’ feels sacrilegious. African art, design and culture has made major contributions to European art, and its fingerprints can be found all over historical and contemporary music, sculpture, dance, fashion and art in general. frican style has waxed and waned in terms of its influence, but right now – it’s hot! Artists like Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh, Moore, and Pollock, to name but a few, knew what they were doing when they tapped into the inspirational, powerful and beautiful abstraction of African art. And dare we mention the explosion of free Jazz around the same time, with rhythms and an improvisational shtick that was solidly based on African music. Now, fast forward to today and you’ll find a plethora of design blogs, runway collections and interior design magazines inspired by African fabrics, art and culture.

If you don’t have the guts to dress head to toe in African fabric, Dolapo James of Urban Knit, based in London, makes beautiful designer clutch bags from colourful African fabric. Imagine black skinny jeans and sloppy black pullover combo with heels and a jewel bright African clutch. And for the boys, check out Samson Soboye - full of quirky, funky takes on tailored jackets, shirts, and jewellery for men inspired by tribal symbols. Totally cool. (www.soboye. com)

African Wax Fabric

African Mud Cloth

There are several different types of African fabric, but the one you will be most familiar with is wax printed. Extremely vibrant and colourful, the designs are often kaleidoscopic, psychedelic and wonderfully geometric but never, never dull! Faint hearted and retiring types beware: it screams ‘look at me!’ but in Africa people dress head to toe in it, embracing life, colour and fun. It has very gradually crept in and is beginning to be used by some

If bright colours are not your thing then another African fabric which has been popping up on the pages of Elle Deco and Pinterest is Mud Cloth. Hailing from Mali, it’s made from narrow strips of handwoven cotton, stitched together into a whole cloth, painted with geometric patterns and symbols using natural dyes, including aged river-mud. It is usually black & white, or brown & white geometric patterning, but always really earthy. Looks great hanging on the wall, made into cushions, or used to reinvigorate vintage armchairs. Incorporated into a mid century modern backdrop, and especially with teak furniture, they have a harmony that’s hard to beat.

forward thinking designer makers, not just for clothing, but to dress furniture and for accessories too! Right here in Leeds we have Heather Linnitt of Eclectic Chair Upholstery using African fabric to reupholster 1950s cocktail chairs, and Sally Stubbs of Twenty Watt using it to make splendidly vibrant statement lampshades.

Since Laura Wellington and James Abbott Donnelly launched Duke Studios in 2011 it has become a thriving hub for creative talent, opening the doors to a host of creatives, including web developers, online marketing & management for the music industry, an actors’ agency, designer makers, interior designers, photographers, film makers, music and event PR, architects, graphic designers, and a record label. While a plethora of businesses operate out of Duke Studios, it has the feel of being one company operating as a new type of creative agency. Part of the impetus behind Duke Studios was Laura and

James’ frustration at seeing a brain drain of some of the brightest creative minds of Leeds lured away by other cities perceived as having more opportunities for the creative industries. Duke away to galvanise their own creative communities, but the team remains fiercely and passionately Leeds-centric – sitting on the board at Leeds Inspired and the Civic Trust, working closely with the Council, opening lines of communication between local agencies and institutions, and striving to make Leeds the best city it can be. What’s brilliant about Laura, James, and more recent additions to the Duke team, Gem Smith and Kate Stevens, is that they don’t just dream up ideas and talk about them, they actually get things done. The Munro House location is already internationally recognised as one of the coolest workspaces around and the team is now looking to take it up a notch with the new digs on Sheaf Street, where a major addition will be a versatile events space which launches in May and will play host to everything from exhibitions to classical concerts. The team welcomes enquiries from anyone with a great idea who’d like to hire the space. There’s an outside yard for Summer barbeques and events. Duke Sheaf St will also feature a café bar where those who favour a coffee shop office can get unlimited broadband and coffee for £15 a day. And, the space will be open to the public so that they can gain an appreciation for the great things going on right under our noses and contributing to the culture of our city. www.duke-studios.com Twitter: @DukeStudiosLeeds

A year ago six dance organisations came together to highlight the strength of dance in Leeds, its contribution to the local economy and its influence on a national and international level. Now Balbir Singh Dance Company, Northern Ballet, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Phoenix Dance Theatre, RJC Dance and Yorkshire Dance, have been joined by Dance Action Zone Leeds (DAZL) and Leeds Beckett University in an updated map which shows the work and reach of these groups in the year 2013/14: www.cityofdance.co.uk

Adapting a famous classic like Tolstoy’s ‘Anna Karenina’ can’t be easy, but it is clearly a challenge that writer Jo Clifford relished. She was originally commissioned to do this by Sheffield Crucible about 15 years ago, but the production was shelved when the artistic director who had commissioned it left the theatre. The play, which is at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 9th May – 13th June, is now in its third production and Jo is immensely proud of it.

“It looks beautiful, the actors are fabulous and I’m in love with them all!” she told us. “And, it’s a multi-racial cast which is very much what I wanted. I’m working with a designer and director who understand what it’s about – it is so close to what I originally intended.” Directed by Olivier-nominated Ellen McDougall, with design by Joanna Scotcher, this more modern adaptation presents one of the most famous love stories of all time, exploring what happens when two very different couples grapple with their emotions.

Anna is the envy of St. Petersburg society. Glamorous and admired, but locked in a lonely marriage, her sudden but passionate affaire with Count Vronsky puts everything she has ever known at risk. In a parallel story, Levin is trying to live justly in a social system built on injustice. When his love for a childhood friend ends unhappily, he tries to deny its existence. But like Anna he can’t. Although there have been other stage adaptions, and a number of

films of Anna Karenina, Jo had not seen any of them. “It is a wonderful book”, she said. “In adapting it I literally immersed myself in it – becoming the characters and letting them speak to me, then playing all the parts. You have to find your own response and trust your instincts. I loved doing it.” This is the Playhouse’s second partnership with Birmingham’s Royal Exchange Theatre, following the huge success of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Ony Uhiara takes the title role and the cast also includes Robert Gilbert as Count Vronsky, Anthony Barclay, Donna Berlin, Claire Brown, John Cummins, Ryan Early, Jonathan Keeble and Gillian Saker. Jo Clifford is the author of over 70 plays, which have been performed all over the world. She is currently working on her ‘Gospel According to Jesus Queen of Heaven’, which will be performed at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Anna Karenina is in The Courtyard at West Yorkshire Playhouse, running alongside the Royal Exchange’s production of Chris Urch’s 2013 Bruntwood Prize winning ‘The Rolling Stone’ (12th – 23rd May).

edgepig Theatre’s dark, claustrophobic production of Jean Genet’s ‘The Maids’ at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, on 29th May combines their trademark flair for storytelling with jarring movement work, live music, innovative visuals and striking design. Genet’s blackly comic play follows the paranoia and destructive power play of two sisters, trapped between their love and hatred of their mistress and each other. They plot the murder of their mistress. It has to be perfect. Ritual turns to compulsion and compulsion to obsession, until their world unravels around them.

Hedgepig Theatre was founded by Andy Curry and Gemma Sharp. They produce work ranging from fullscale theatre productions and promenade storytelling performances in country houses, to intimate strippeddown pub theatre, and everything in between. They work closely alongside a team of creatives, priding themselves on original costume, music composition, filmmaking and innovative lighting and set design, that provide their productions with a unique, distinctive character.

or thern School of Contemporary Dance in Chapeltown recently received an ‘Outstanding’ rating for its Foundation Course in Contemporary Dance. One of only eight schools forming the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama, NSCD’s year long course provides over 16s with a springboard to degree level training and a career in dance. Following a rigorous first time inspection at the end of last year, the Ofsted inspectors praised NSCD for the quality of its teaching, learning and assessment. Ofsted also recognized the school’s

community work, commenting: “Residents of the city benefit highly from the excellent learning and participation activities at NSCD”. The Foundation Course complements NSCD’s degree and postgraduate programmes. Many of the school’s 200 UK and overseas students go on to

work with high-profile national and international companies, including Hofesh Shechter Company, Vincent Dance Theatre and Protein Dance. NSCD alumni, like choreographer Akram Khan MBE, also set up their own successful dance companies. “Leeds has a rich performing arts heritage”, said Principal Janet Smith MBE. “The School has produced some of the dance industry’s most talented artists and arts leaders, as well as inspirational performing companies. Our dance sector is pulling out the stops to raise the profile of Leeds as a dance destination. NSCD’s ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted report is not only brilliant for the school but also a boost to efforts to showcase the city as the premier home for high quality dance.”

As the world stands on the brink of war, King Edward VIII sparks controversy with his affaire with Wallis Simpson. As his position becomes increasingly untenable, his brother Bertie, who has always shied away from the public eye because of a terrible stammer, is thrust into the spotlight as his successor. ertie meets maverick speech therapist and failed actor Lionel Logue (played by Jason Donovan) at an office in Harley Street and together they embark on an unlikely journey to prepare Bertie to lead his country as King George VI. That pretty much sums up the story, as everyone who has seen the film with Colin Firth will know. However, when we caught up with Raymond Couthard (Miles Egerton in ITV’s Mr Selfridge and James Schofield in Hotel Babylon) who plays Bertie, we learnt that the play is very different. “The film changed lots of the lines and structure of the play”, he told us. “There is a lot more to it. It’s like a political thriller really. There’s much more on the political backdrop. WWI was not that long ago and now they were about to embark on it again. “It’s almost impossible to compare it with the film. The story is stronger. It ups the stakes between the two men. This is the journey of a man who never expected to be in this position. He is totally unprepared and is up against one of the greatest orators of all time – Hitler.” The play explores why Bertie is the man he is. He had a miserable childhood due largely to this debilitating stammer. He

had no friends and Logue, this extraordinary free spirit, changes his life and becomes his first friend – it is a true ‘bromance’. “It is such a heart-warming story”, said Raymond. “I am thoroughly enjoying it and audiences are loving it. You can’t help but be moved by this man’s struggle to overcome his stammer and deliver an iconic speech that is broadcast across the globe to inspire his people.”

Directed by Roxana Silbert, Artistic Director of Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the play also stars Nicholas Blane, Jamie Hinde, Felicity Houlbrooke, Claire Lams Katy Stephens and Martin Turner. The King’s Speech is at Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 26th to Saturday 30th May. Tickets (£18.50 - £34) are available from 0844 848 2700 or online at leedsgrandtheatre.com

Thursday 18th June 2015 marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, when an allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington finally defeated the Emperor Napoleon, bringing an end to major Europewide conflict for the next half century.

oyal Armouries Leeds is marking the anniversary with a special exhibition, running from Friday 22nd May to Sunday 23rd August, and bringing together works of art, arms and armour. Highlights include the monumental ‘cartoon’ by Daniel Maclise, on loan from the Royal Academy of Arts, and on display to the public for the first time in over forty years; and the magnificent painting ‘Scotland Forever!’ by Lady Elizabeth Butler from Leeds City Art Gallery. These stunning works will be displayed alongside unique objects from the Royal Armouries own collections, which together will help to unfold the dramatic story of the events of 18th June 1815. Daniel Maclise’s ‘cartoon’ for ‘The Meeting of Wellington and General Blücher after the Battle of Waterloo’ was considered to be a masterpiece and took over a year to complete. When it was first shown in

Waterloo 1815 Study Day As part of the Royal Armouries’ commemorations, they will be hosting a Study Day on Saturday 13th June (9.30am – 4.30pm) to explore the significance of the battle both today and at the time; examine the arms and armour used; look at how weapons were depicted in

contemporary art; and re-examine the recently conserved Siborne model. Tickets £30/ £25 from 0113 220 1888 or bookings@armouries.org.uk Pictured above - The Duke of Wellington’s telescope, used at the Battle of Waterloo. Copyright Royal Armouries, Leeds XV1.74

The Swine That Dines is the evening hours supper club alter ego of favourite café and breakfast/lunch hotspot The Greedy Pig, and it’s an absolute must for those partial to some porcine delicacy. ne of The Swine’s specialties is a nose to tail feast, which is amazing! It showcases a passionately inventive approach to dishes featuring offal or uncommon cuts of meat, as well as promoting The Swine’s waste not, want not ethos. Supper club numbers are limited to around 12, due to the modest size of the premises, but this only enhances the lovely, cosy and intimate vibe of the evening. Not to mention that one couldn’t ask for more welcoming and hospitable hosts than The Swine that Dines Jo and Stu. With Stu at the helm, we were quickly and acutely made aware that here was a man who really knows his meat and his experience, ingenuity and enthusiasm was brought deliciously to bear in a fantastic procession of dishes. The meal got off to a cracking start with the home-smoked pig’s liver with parsley, shallot and chive salad and brandied fruit. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a less than entirely easy relationship with liver; while I have, from time to time, been pleasantly surprised, I wouldn’t usually be inclined to select it from a menu. This, however, was a revelation, the smokiness of the meat, cooked just-so to retain a delicate texture, chimed brilliantly

with the oniony salad and the boozy sweetness of the fruit. An impressive opening act that had our taste buds standing to attention. Next up was the phenomenally tasty crispy pig’s head, served with green lentils, salsa verde, apple and confit garlic. A personal highlight of the evening’s menu this was really something; the crispy exterior coating of the compact slab we were presented with giving way to a blend of various cuts from the head (cheek, jawbone and a little brain among them) served up in a

texture close to that of a terrine and sumptuous flavour which entwined wonderfully with that sharp hit of garlic and the vinegary tang of the lentils and salsa verde. Perhaps to return our palates to somewhat more familiar territory we were next treated to ox tongue pastrami, which had been diligently home cured and brined by Stu. The rigorous pastrami prep had really done the job as the slices, ever so slightly charred at the edges, delivered a rich, lip-smacking saltiness accentuated by the accompanying beetroot and almond, the stealthy spiciness of the confit green peppers adding a hidden kick. Fittingly, the de facto ‘main’ course was, very literally, the heart of the matter. This lamb’s stuffed heart with sourdough, lemon and

Serrano ham and served with peas and a root veg puree (somewhat dal-like in flavour and consistency) was a real beast of a dish; intensely rich and gamey flavour with a dense yet succulent texture it was, pardon the pun, outrageously hearty. By this stage in the proceedings some of us were feeling the strain and tackling the heart did require a measure of exertion. For a couple of our party who, heretofore, had managed to overcome any offal-based reservations or squeamishness, this was the point at which they finally met their match (I’m happy to say I soldiered on, leaving my plate spotless) but special mention must go to one of our fellow diners who, having demolished his own portion, wasted no time in wolfing down his defeated neighbour’s leftover! Dessert was a heady, aromatic and spicy affair; chai-steamed pudding with An evening rhubarb and cardamom Anglaise and ginger snap which definitively drew of fantastic a line under an evening of fantastic food with charming company. This is food with a supper club certain to attract ardently devoted regulars. charming What I find appealing among the myriad charms of The Swine that company Dines and their approach is that they appear utterly unconcerned with

fitting in with the try-hard, ultra-hip (and often rather pretentious) foodie scene, content instead to carve out their own inimitable niche doing what they do tastefully and with good humour. Approachable, friendly and possessed of a miraculous way with food, you know where you are with Jo and Stu. And that is a very good place indeed! If nose to tail isn’t your thing, The Swine That Dines also does amazing things with fish/

seafood (PigNSquid) and cheese (CheeseAndSwine). As places are extremely limited and these events have proven so popular, one would be wise to book as soon as possible when they announce the next supper club. There’s not a moment to waste! eadingley Neighbourhood Plan is currently being drafted by a Special Drafting Group. It will consist of planning policies and non-planning projects, based on extensive consultation. Over five thousand leaflets were delivered to houses in the Neighbourhood. And, in the words of the YEP, ‘Headingley Plan draws crowds’when a workshop was held in March. The consultation began last Summer and it soon became clear what residents wanted to achieve – ‘A friendly, clean, family-friendly neighbourhood that has a mix of older, younger and student populations’. We drafted a vision for the Plan ‘to develop a sustainable, inclusive and mixed community’. This has been enthusiastically endorsed by 96% of respondents to our consultation.

On the basis of the preoccupations that emerged from the initial meeting, the Steering Group drafted a dozen or so objectives, which have also been supported. The single most popular objective was ‘to reserve greenspace and trees’. Not surprisingly, the group of objectives concerning Community Together proved most important to residents, including developing a ‘balanced’ and a ‘sustainable’ community, and the means to do so – diversifying housing provision. Other objectives were equally important, including ‘diversifying shops and facilities’ to promote a ‘sustainable economy’; another

was ‘tackling noise and waste management’; and, a third was the problem of traffic in Headingley. Finally, residents were keen to promote a ‘sustainable environment’ and preserve our ‘built heritage’. At the workshop, we considered policy options to achieve these objectives. Once drafted, the Plan will be published for everyone to comment on. On his return he continued to work for Leeds City Council until his retirement in 1992, in a career spanning 44 years. Many of the control measures seen on his Fellowship travels have now been implemented in this country. To mark its 50th anniversary, the Trust has just awarded 150

Better Homes Leeds Better Homes Leeds launched on 18th March and will enable householders to access funding for energy efficiency measures for their homes on a rolling programme across the city. These measures will include cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, window and door replacement and solar panels. Under the current funding arrangements, this scheme will provide an ‘able-to-pay’ offer for householders in a position to make personal contributions towards these measures. The priority areas have not all been confirmed yet but there will be an opportunity for citywide cavity or loft insulation from May onwards. Travelling Fellowships – investing at least £1.3m in British citizens. This year’s Fellows will travel to 58 countries, across six continents, where they will carry out a wide range of projects. The average length of a Fellowship is six weeks. In addition, many events will be held during the year to celebrate Sir Winston’s life and legacy. “We were delighted and honoured that the Queen hosted a reception to mark our anniversary year”, said Jamie Balfour, Director General of The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. “Sir Winston’s legacy lives on through our Fellows – individuals who, like him, have vision, leadership, a passion with a purpose, and a commitment to help their fellow citizens.”

The Fisher family from Adel recently demonstrated the true value of teamwork when they travelled to the other side of the world to offer their combined skills, in support of The Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

pecialist Neurological Physiotherapist Jill Fisher of Leeds Neurophysiotherapy, together with physiotherapist Linzi Meadows, set off for Bangladesh with the aim of teaching a five-day course, for physiotherapists. The same course had run four years previously just for CRP staff, but on this occasion it was opened up to members of the wider physiotherapy community. The final 25 days were spent working alongside staff, giving clinical support and teaching a number of workshops – each session including patient treatment demonstrations and group activities, promoting learning through problem solving and discussion. Jill was joined by her husband Paul, a dentist, daughter Lana (an officer at Leeds City Council), and son in law Crispin Northey (a fundraiser

for Christians against Poverty), for the final two weeks. Lana and Crispin worked in an advisory capacity in the fundraising department sharing skills in bid writing, communications and presentation skills. It wasn’t long before Paul also got his teeth into things. He was soon running dental health education sessions and giving individual advice to parents or carers. One of the most important aspects of his work there was educating people about the dangers of chewing Betel Nut, which can cause mouth cancer. It was Paul, and Crispin’s first visit to CRP, but the warm welcome, coupled with the need for further help in these fields, mean it is unlikely to be their last.

Tim Goodall, Leeds University Employability Officer, is the Green Party candidate for Leeds North West. Protecting the NHS is one of his chief concerns. “I spent some years in the USA”, said Tim. “They have privatised healthcare and if you are not insured the treatment you can get is the bare minimum. I’m worried that the NHS could be taken down that road – private health companies are watching to see how much money they can make from NHS contracts. “We also want to put an end to austerity. Cuts are

not paying off the debt, but they are destroying many of the services people need, like care for the elderly. This is a rich country but the Coalition government is making ordinary people pay for a banking crisis they didn’t cause. That has to change. “The Green Party is still the only party that takes environmental protection seriously. We want people to ask themselves what kind of world they want to hand on to their children and grandchildren. “This election is an exciting time for the local Green Party. Over 150 people have joined in the last year, and we’re getting a tremendous response to our polices from people in the area.”

austerity is the problem The Lib Dems have spent 5 years supporting austerity policies that have damaged the UK economy & society. Austerity resulted in the slowest recovery from a recession since the Great Depression, with average disposable household income still lower than it was in 2010, and inequality rising. Far from tackling the deficit, by delaying the recovery the coalition built up the biggest rise in the debt to GDP ratio of any peacetime government since the 1800s. All 3 of the other major parties intend to continue with further deep cuts.

voting Green is the only solution Austerity is a red line. If elected, Tim Goodall will join Caroline Lucas & any other Green MPs in an anti-austerity alliance with SNP and Plaid Cymru to oppose further cuts to public services. Instead the Green Party would support measures to raise up to £189 billion a year in extra tax from the corporations, financial sector, aviation, landlords and rich individuals who aren’t paying their share. Other key economic policies we support include; # 1 million new green and public sector jobs # 500,000 new social rented houses being built # A £10 minimum wage, so everyone can live on their wages

The first ever Meanwood Festival launches on Saturday 16th May, concluding ten days later with the Family Fun Day, to be opened on Bank Holiday Monday 25th May by Kay Mellor OBE, writer of TV’s Fat Friends and ‘The Syndicate’. rganised by the Meanwood Va l l e y Partnership, over 60 events will take place at 15 different locations, encompassing music, art, dance, film, sport, health, heritage, drama, food and drink. “We decided to organise a Festival for Meanwood to build on the momentum of last year’s Fun Day, which attracted nearly 2,000 visitors”, said Chris Swales, Festival Organiser. “We wanted to showcase the range of activities this vibrant, energetic community has to offer. Generous funding from Skipton Building Society’s Grassroots Giving Programme, and sponsorship from Moores Homes and Leeds City Councill have enabled us to develop the Festival, which we hope will become an annual event.” There is a real enthusiasm to get involved amongst the different

groups and businesses, as illustrated in the variety of events. Many are offering free taster sessions. If you fancy learning to play the ukulele, cycle, salsa or try Tai Chi, now’s your chance! Events range in size too from the inaugural concert of the 50 strong SingMeanwood! choir to a solo performance of ‘The Turn of the Screw’. Leeds Rhinos legend Jamie Jones Buchanan will be on hand to coach young rugby enthusiasts. There’s a Teddy Bears’ Picnic and DramaRama children’s theatre will perform ‘Matilda’ and ‘Snow White’. Ridgeside Brewery has produced ‘Stonegate’, a special Meanwood Festival Ale that’ll be available in

local pubs. Restaurants are offering special menus. And Majestic Wines is holding a wine tasting course. The Festival also features numerous opportunities to get active – from Kettlebells, Kung Fu, bootcamp, and Qi Gong, to a gentle jog in the park. And, if you like hanging around, there’s Aerial Yoga! Exhibitions of photography, art and crafts present the creative side of the area. Share your memories of Meanwood Park and the Hollies with writer Peter Spafford. And, let’s not forget the Fun Dog Show where pampered pooches show off for the judges. The Family Fun Day on the cricket pitch, Parkside Road, will be bigger and better than ever with over 40 community and craft stalls, food from around the world, a children’s activity marquee, climbing wall and bouncy castle. Kids can also meet the Minions and Olaf the snowman. “We have some great entertainment too”, said Chris, “with a brass band, African drummers, Gothic Morris Dancers, RAF display, Tai Chi and the Tailwaggers Dog Display Team. It’s going to be great.” The Festival runs from Saturday 16th – Monday 25th May. Many activities are free but some places are limited so you may need to book to avoid disappointment. astlehill Estate Agents in Headingley have been shortlisted in the Best Estate Agency and Best Letting Agency categories for the Yorkshire and Humber region in this year’s Estate Agent and Letting Agents Awards – known as the ESTAS. It is the first time the company has entered the awards – which will be presented by TV property expert and presenter of Channel 4’s Location Location series, Phil Spencer. Castlehill is Headingley’s longest-established estate and letting agency. “We are proud to be flying a flag for independent agencies and for Leeds in these awards”, said Simon Ketteringham, Director. “They are unique in the way they are judged – not by a panel of experts, but by 25,000 votes cast by customers nationwide throughout the year. “Agencies win their way through to the finals solely on research carried out amongst their clients. They are

asked a series of questions about the standard of service and score us on the professionalism they received when buying, selling or letting a property. Because of the way performance is measured, they carry a lot of kudos. “We would like to thank all those customers who took the time to offer their feedback, which we have drawn upon over the year to make further improvements to our service.”

ouncillor Javaid Akhtar (Hyde Park & Woodhouse) is leading discussions with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust on improving their approach to managing bereavement, following concerns raised by community groups. As a member of the Council’s Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Board, Councillor Akhtar recently met with Clare Linley, Deputy Chief Nurse, and Krystina Kozlowska, Head of Patient Experience, at Leeds Civic Hall to discuss the Trust’s policy. Additional work will be undertaken over the next three months and changes will be made to address some of the concerns raised.

Discussions focused on the Trust’s handling of bereavement with the Muslim and Jewish communities specifically, particularly at weekends and bank holidays, when it is important that funerals take place quickly to meet faith requirements. Councillor Akhtar is confident that these issues have been acknowledged by the Trust and will be addressed in their new policy. “Muslim and Jewish residents from across the city have contacted the Council regarding their concerns over the handling of family bereavements by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and officers have worked really

well with the Health Scrutiny Board to address these concerns”, said Councillor Akhtar. “I think the draft policy discussed at the last meeting addresses all these concerns and I hope it will be approved following the consultation period.” “It is really important that we listen and respond when members of the community who use our services tell us that we need to do better to deliver the care that they need”, said Krystina Kozlowska. “The new bereavement policy shows that we have taken the concerns raised into account and it will support our staff to ensure that at these very difficult times, we get our care right, for every family.”

Headingley Library celebrates a famous, former Headingley resident this month when Dr Kersten Hall of the University of Leeds discusses his book ‘The Man in the Monkeynut Coat’ on Thursday 14th May, 7pm-8pm (admission free). The book, which was published last year and was recently included on a list of ‘Science Books of 2014‘ in ‘The Guardian’, tells the story of local scientist William Astbury who helped to pioneer the powerful new science of molecular biology and whose role in one of the biggest discoveries of the 20th century has long been overlooked.

Astbury is by no means the only scientific pioneer to which Headingley can lay claim, and Dr Hall is gathering material for a possible book about the Nobel Prize winning chemists Archer Martin and Richard Synge who worked at the Wool Industries Research Association (WIRA) site on Headingley Lane. He would be delighted to hear from any former employees of WIRA who would be happy to share their recollections, and can be contacted at medkth@leeds.ac.uk

ay is the best month of the year to see birds. Not only are all our resident species in the full frenz y of breeding ac tivity, but they will have been joined by mig rants who have spent the Winter further south. The earliest, the chiffchaff, you will have heard singing its name in late March, and it will have been followed by willow warbler, blackcap and many others. One of the loveliest is the wood warbler. Found mostly in sessile oak woodlands, it is a tiny bird with a greenish back, a lemon yellow breast and very pale underparts. Although it builds its nest in vegetation on the ground, it spends a lot of its time flitting about in the

tree canopy in search of insect food for its young. It has two completely different songs, one a descending trill, which has been described as the sound of a coin spinning on a hard surface, and the other a plaintive “tiutiu-tiu. Its favoured habitat is sadly in short supply in the northeast. The best place to see wood warblers locally is Strid Woods at Bolton Abbey, but they have been reported on Otley Chevin and at the St Ives estate near Bingley in the past.

too, but Summer Pots and Baskets Grow Your Own You can plan what you’re going to plant in your hanging baskets and containers, but it’s too early to put any bedding plants outside until the end of the month. If you have a greenhouse or bright shed then you can get your containers planted up and ready to go, enabling your plants to get a head start indoors so that your pots and baskets will look full and established as soon as you place them in position. Try the eye catching lime green foliage of Ipomoea Sweetheart ‘Light Green’ with bright blue Heliotrope and add a lipstick pink Pelargonium to give you a vivid summer show.

Sow Green Beans, Courgettes and Sweetcorn in pots on your windowsill ready to plant out next month or plant the seeds of more hardy vegetables straight into the soil outside. These include Broad Beans, Beetroot, Broccoli, Carrots, Peas, Lettuce, Radishes and Spinach. There are lovely things to harvest in May too including Asparagus, Rhubarb and Spring Cabbage. Keep everything free of weeds and well watered to ensure you have plenty of crops later on.

make sure there are no nesting birds before you get out the hedge trimmers

Maintenance Lawns are growing quickly now and need regular trimming. Hedges may need trimming too, but make sure there are no nesting birds before you get out the hedge trimmers. Keep removing weeds from your borders and staking herbaceous perennials as they grow. Now that the daffodils have finished flowering, you can lift and divide groups that are getting too crowded and plant some elsewhere

Wage War on Slugs Lovely young green shoots are adored by slugs so it is especially important to protect your plants this month. Barriers such as copper rings and wool pellets are good defences around single plants. For a larger area slug nematodes can be applied to give up to six weeks of slug control and these have the advantage over slug pellets that they continue to work in wet weather and don’t harm other wildlife. Lau appear to inhabit the space where traditional folk fuses with contemporary chamber pop while maintaining an exploratory and experimental approach to composition. The centrepiece of this wonderfully evocative album is the incredible title track, a collaboration with London-based strings outfit Elysian Quartet. The stunning, epic seventeen minute piece is a real showstopper, by turns beautiful and unnerving. The pairing of these two groups seems a perfectly intuitive and harmonious conjoining of like musical minds. Anyone with a taste for expansive, idiosyncratic modern folk would be well advised to obtain The Bell That Never Rang and the live show promises to be something very special indeed. STARRING: :BEN STILLER, NAOMI WATTS, ADAM DRIVER, AMANDA SEYFRIED CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 97 MINS Noah Baumbach, one time Wes Anderson collaborator and director of ‘The Squid and the Whale’ and ‘Greenberg and Francis Ha’, is an auteur who, much like Alexander Payne, specialises in making smart, emotionally complex comedy/ dramas and doesn’t shy away from having deeply flawed characters at the centre of his films. While billed as comedies, his films are more likely to elicit wry smiles or rueful chuckles than gutbusting guffaws. His latest, ‘While We’re Young’, is no exception and is a shrewdly observed, incisive take on the theme of aging and youth in contemporary culture. It’s certain to resonate with viewers rounding the four decade mark. Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts are mid-forties couple Josh and Cornelia who feel a creeping sense of stagnation in their personal and professional lives. The feeling of an age threshold being passed is compacted by their friends settling into comfortable domesticity, particularly the newly babied Marina and Fletcher (a telling appearance by Adam Horovitz, the Beastie Boy formerly known as Ad-Rock looking every bit of his forty-something years). When Josh and Cornelia cross paths with freewheeling, charismatic twenty-something couple Jamie and

Darby, Josh is immediately charmed by their youthful exuberance and the analogue trappings of their Lo-Fi, DIY lifestyle. Cornelia is initially reticent but soon she, too, is swept up in their rejuvenating aura. Josh is a documentary filmmaker whose latest project has been stalled for years. As it turns

contemporary culture. It’s certain to resonate with viewers rounding the four decade mark

out, Jamie is also a budding docmaker and his admiration for Josh’s work initially endears him to Josh. As they set about working together the cracks begin to show, especially when Cornelia’s father, a revered film-maker in his own right, enters the frame and Josh begins to doubt Jamie’s motives. The background theme of documentary filmmaking is an effective touch here, bringing together elements of authenticity (that quality so highly prized by hipsters), ethical integrity and the nature of truth, particularly how the truth can be hard to perceive when one is not being honest with oneself. The film accurately manages to show how, as we age, we regard

youngsters (youngsters?! Geez, I’m sounding old!) with a mixture of jealousy and disdain. Josh and Cornelia forging their friendship with Jamie and Darby could be seen as accessorising with people, and it does initially put some pep back in their step as they bask in the energising glow of endless opportunity. It could easily be said that their bridging of the generation gap smacks of desperation. What is more frequently glimpsed in the faces of the older couple is bewilderment and fear; fear of dwindling into irrelevance and bewilderment at how people with half as many years under their belts can be so certain of who they are. In less assured hands, ‘While We’re Young’ could have been a fairly broad, knockabout comedy packed with obvious gags riffing on clueless youth, jaded middle age and the pathetic tragedies of mid-life crises. Here though, sharp writing and solid work by a great ensemble cast deliver an astute, honest and wise treatment of the subject. The film echoes themes explored in Greenberg, Baumbach’s previous collaboration with Ben Stiller, who turns in one of his more finely tuned, nuanced performances

here. The always watchable and often superb Naomi Watts shows off a too rarely seen knack for comic timing and a gift for physical comedy. The standout here, though, would probably have to be Adam Driver, whose star has been in the ascendant since his breakthrough role on HBO’s Girls. His odd, gangly physicality and indefinable strangeness is put to good use and he pretty much steals every scene he’s in. We can expect to see a lot more of this guy. ‘While We’re Young’ takes an interesting, considered approach to situations and issues bound to be familiar to many of us without coming across as either too curmudgeonly and cynical, or naïve and sentimental. What I thought might have been heading for something of a cop out ending actually hits an amusingly ambiguous and subversive note in the final shot. Smart, funny, often surprising and unexpected, ‘While We’re Young’ will strike a chord with those leaving their twenties behind, looking back on the self-centred preoccupations of youth and those experiencing the onset of middle age anxieties and invites us to laugh at both.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Yorkshire Dales – Six Dales – 30 Walks

Pictured: Park ranger Josh Hull and Bradford Bulls player

A new walking book by John Burland has just been published.

Adrian Partell

Heart Research UK’s nineteenth annual Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on 20th June gives you the chance to hike three of the highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales - Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough – and entry is free! All Heart Research UK asks is that people raise as much money as possible to support its groundbreaking research into helping hearts near you. If you’re not quite ready for the full three peaks challenge, the charity has introduced a 16 mile Valleys Walk – a guided trek around the foothills of this beautiful part of Yorkshire. Again, all walkers have to do is raise as much money as they can for Heart Research UK. All funds raised go towards the charity’s work, which has made such a difference for people like Imogen Tankard, aged four, who had life-saving heart surgery when she was just six months old. Her mother Vicky said: “We can’t thank research enough because it has

saved Imogen’s life. It’s amazing what they can do in heart surgery nowadays.” To watch a video of last year’s Heart Research UK Three Peaks event and to sign up for the June 2015 event, visit www. heartresearch.org.uk/events/ yorkshire-three-peaks-valleys

John has lived in Wharfedale for 30 years but has been walking the Yorkshire Dales for over 50. The book features five walks from each of the six North Yorkshire Dales – Ribblesdale, Airedale, Wharfedale, Nidderdale, Wensleydale and Swaledale. It includes walks to suit all ages and capabilities, ranging from short easy four-mile walks, to more strenuous walks of up to twelve miles. A former Scout leader and founder of The Wainwright Society, John’s walking has taken him to many parts of the UK and abroad but he still reckons The Yorkshire Dales is one of the finest walking areas with its variety of scenery. For the past four years he has been researching and walking these routes. As well as the route descriptions, the book contains a plethora of historical and local details of the areas covered. John has been a regular contributor to Dalesman & Cumbria magazines, and has presented his one-man show, An Evening with Alfred Wainwright, to audiences throughout the North of England.

or difficulty. Once you are comfortably harnessed a series of computer controlled pulling forces are gently applied at precise angles to gradually draw apart the vertebrae surrounding a targeted disc. BE FREE FROM BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA AT LAST

NEED MORE FROM PHYSIO? SURGERY NOT AN OPTION? IDD THERAPY IS FOR YOU. IDD Therapy offers exciting new hope for sufferers of back pain, neck pain and related symptoms such as sciatica. In clinics nationwide, this non-invasive treatment helps to bridge the gap between ‘hands-on’ treatments and surgery. What is IDD Therapy? Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) Therapy is a non-surgical spinal decompression treatment for chronic back pain, neck pain and leg pain, in particular herniated (‘slipped’) discs and sciatica. Through a growing network of UK clinics and hospitals, including physiotherapists, osteopaths and chriopractors, IDD Therapy delivers a precise and more consistent treatment than is possible with the hands alone or with traditional mechanical treatments, like traction. IDD Therapy is supported by a body of evidence and all providers have a commitment to evidence based medicine. How does IDD Therapy work? Computer-controlled pulling forces gently draw apart targeted segments of the spine in order to decompress specific discs and relieve muscle spasm. By reducing the pressure on an injured or bulging disc and stretching the soft tissues, IDD Therapy aims to improve mobility in the spine and allow your body’s natural healing mechanisms to operate more efficiently.

DISC C L I N I C

In doing so, it can relieve pain caused by muscle spasm and alleviate nerve compression and irritation caused by bulging discs.

IDD Therapy gives us a very sophisticated non-invasive option which enables us to do more for disc patients without the need for injections or surgery. Ami Sevi Clinical Director, The Good Health Centre

What does the IDD Therapy treatment programme involve? You will be fully assessed before undergoing a series of treatments; this includes a review of a current or recent MRI or suitable scan. IDD treatment is gentle and safe and is delivered by the SPINA machine. Sessions begin with some Thermedic infrared heat therapy on the lower back to ‘warm up’ the muscles and ligaments. Whilst remaining fully clothed, a soft ergonomic harness is attached to your pelvis and upper back and the machine tilts, helping you get onto the treatment bed without pain

You will feel totally relaxed during the 25 minute session on the SPINA machine. Afterwards, some cold therapy is applied to minimise any temporary soreness which may be caused by muscles being worked in a new way. Gentle exercise and activity are gradually introduced as treatment progresses - essential for long-term pain relief. Who can benefit from IDD Therapy? Typical candidates for IDD Therapy are people who have had back pain, neck pain or sciatica for three months or more and have not responded to manual therapy and exercise. Reasons to choose IDD Therapy? • Your current treatment is not working • You want to stop taking painkillers • You are seeking long-term pain relief • You want to return to normal activities To discover if IDD Therapy treatment is right for you, call The Good Health Centre on 0113 347 3427 or visit: www.GoodHealthCentre.co.uk

The First EVER Tour de Yorkshire!

he Tour de Yorkshire, a brand new cycle race following on from last year’s Tour de France Grand Depart success, takes place over the bank holiday weekend, 1st – 3rd May. The race has three stages and includes a women’s event on 2nd May, a mass participation sportive on 3rd May and a cultural festival. It will be broadcast in the UK and across Europe and a huge television audience is expected. German sprinter Marcel Kittel and Dame Sarah Storey will join Sir Bradley Wiggins for this first exciting event. Kittel returns to Yorkshire having worn the first yellow jersey in Harrogate last year. The Tour de Yorkshire takes in places missed out on last year’s Tour de France. Stage one on 1st May starts in Bridlington and heads along the Flamborough Head Heritage Coast before turning in to the North York Moors National Park, through Dalby Forest and towards Pickering. It then heads back to the coast at Whitby, then south to Robin Hood’s Bay with the ultimate race to the finish line on the seafront at Scarborough (174km). The last section is particularly tough, especially the climb out of Robin Hood’s

Bay, which is 1.5km at an average gradient of 10.3%. Stage two on Saturday is one for the sprinters, and starts outside Selby Abbey. It takes in much of the Wolds, heading towards Market Weighton, through North Newbald and on to Beverley. Here it turns north to Malton, then on to Stamford Bridge. Spectators will have the chance to see a circuit of York and organisers are hoping for a dramatic finish in the town (174km). On Sunday the peloton returns to roads raced in the Grand Départ, only with a twist; starting in Wakefield, riders travel to Barnsley before heading to Holmfirth where they pick up the Grand Départ route in reverse, racing to

Ripponden before riding the iconic Cragg Vale – which was the country’s longest continual climb in the Tour de France, but now becomes the longest continual descent. Riders then make their way to Hebden Bridge, Oxenhope and through the cobbled streets of Haworth. This is a stage for punchers and climbers as a series of short, sharp climbs punctuate the entire route. After a steep climb at Goose Eye they’ll see Ilkley, before a sprint point at Arthington and then on to the finish in Roundhay Park (167km). The ‘Tour de Yorkshire Ride’, the mass participation ride, promises to be one of the most challenging and popular sportives on the

T de Y Women’s Race Tackles York Circuit British calendar. Organised by Human Race, it features three distances – 50km, 108km, and 140km – and takes place before the pro race on Sunday morning. Thousands are expected to take part. The Tour de Yorkshire will be annual event and the organisers – Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) – hope it will grow to be one of the biggest events in the cycling calendar, positioning Yorkshire at the heart of cycling in Europe. Details of the Tour de Yorkshire route and timings can be viewed at letouryorkshire.com/timings

The first Tour de Yorkshire will feature a women’s race on the York circuit on Saturday 2 May. This is open to British Cycling licensed riders from Elite, 1st, 2nd and 3rd categories and will cover four laps of a 20km circuit around York with the same infrastructure as the Tour de Yorkshire later that afternoon. It’s hoped the Tour de Yorkshire women only race, together with The Cycletta – the women only mass participation ride on Sunday 3rd May – in which hundreds of women are expected to take

part, will encourage more women to see the benefits of cycling. “This is a fantastic new addition to the calendar and a great showcase for women’s racing”, said Bob Howden, President of British Cycling. “The York circuit is set for huge crowds and a superb atmosphere, so we look forward to an action packed day.” It is hoped the women’s race will be part of the Tour de Yorkshire every year. Preparations are underway at Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club (ILTSC) to welcome international professional tennis players to the inaugural Aegon Ilkley Trophy Championship from 13th – 21st June. This will be the highest ranking tournament ever held in Yorkshire and is part of the grass court season in the run up to Wimbledon.

A Plaque for Jane The Yorkshire Society recently unveiled a plaque in Victoria Gardens, on The Headrow, in honour of the late Jane Tomlinson CBE. Victoria Gardens became a landmark for Jane and her fundraising efforts, with many of her epic bike rides, including Rome to Home and Lands’ End to John O’Groats, passing through or finishing here. “Watching Jane finish events here, and to see her legacy continue with the Leeds 10K finishing here and the Leeds Half starting in this very spot, is just fantastic”, said Mike Tomlinson, Jane’s husband. “Victoria Gardens is such an important place for our family and brings back a lot of memories. It was an honour for Suzanne and I to represent Jane to unveil the plaque.” The Jane Tomlinson Appeal was set up by a very determined Yorkshire woman to help cancer charities. Before her death in 2007, Jane had raised £1.85 million through a series of

The 135-year old club, which is the only venue in the region with the quality of grass courts and level of facilities required to host such a competition, is set to deliver a superb spectator experience. “Over the week of the Aegon Ilkley Trophy our grounds will host over 100 matches and some of the best players in the world, as well as the next generation of tennis stars”, said Charlie Maunder, ILTSC General Manager. “We look forward to welcoming visitors and players alike to what we believe will be the friendliest tournament of 2015.” Richard Joyner, Tournament

Director for the LTA, added: “2015 is the first year when there will be three weeks, instead of two, between the French Open and Wimbledon and it is fantastic that we have this opportunity to stage the Trophy in Ilkley - the first new venue for Challenger grass court tennis in the UK for several years.” ILTSC is enlisting the help of volunteers as official ‘friends’ to ensure the smooth running of the event; invigorating Yorkshire’s appetite to support world-class sporting events following the triumph of the 2014 Grand Depart. To date, the Appeal has raised over £7.6 million, supporting a range of charities, helping to fund refurbishment projects and purchase vital medical equipment. “To honour Jane with a Yorkshire Society plaque has been a true pleasure and a personal goal of mine”, said Peter Barber from the Society. “What she achieved was just phenomenal. ” For more information on the Appeal, contact 0113 826 7754, www.janetomlinsonappeal.com

I know it’s going to be tough cycling 100 miles a day, but we are training hard and I wanted to do something that would raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Eight years ago, Chris slammed into a wall and broke his neck after his motorbike hit a patch of diesel near Settle and he was subsequently airlifted to hospital, becoming the Air Ambulance’s 2,000th patient. f you were experiencing symptoms such as stomach pain, cramps, diarrhoea, chronic constipation, fatigue and anaemia you would doubtless visit your GP. And the diagnosis? You could have an inherited genetic disposition to coeliac disease, an autoimmune reaction to gluten in wheat, barley and rye. It is more common in women than men, affecting around one in every 100 people in Britain. Coeliac disease can be identified by a simple blood test and confirmed by an endoscopy. At the moment there is no cure. However, it can be controlled by strict adherence to a gluten free diet – you must totally exclude wheat, barley and rye from your diet for the rest of your life. You may think that’s simple, but it isn’t. Wheat, in the form of wheat starch, turns up in foods where you would least expect it. For instance, you’ll find it in salad

Recent legislation has improved food labelling with allergens in bold type, making shopping easier. Also, the range of gluten free foods has increased. Otley Sailing Club and its Sailfree section recently unveiled its brand new facilities, thanks to a Sport England ‘Inspired Facilities’ grant, together with £10,000 of the Club’s own money - a total investment of £47,883. P Greg Mulholland and Otley Town Mayor Councillor Nigel Gill were on hand to help with the celebrations. Sailing was the order of the day, together with tours of the new facilities - which include a wheelchair accessible wet room, a new, level access path, antislip flooring, new doors and new changing room benches.

The Club’s Sailfree programme for children, young people and adults with a wide range of disabilities and complex learning difficulties, offers a unique sailing experience, supported by trained volunteers. Recognised as a Centre of Excellence by the

Royal Yachting Association’s ‘Sailability’ scheme, it provides facilities for people with a disability to enjoy sailing in a safe and well supervised environment. The Club works with several special needs schools and disability organisations in West Yorkshire. Sailfree provides over 1,500 individual sailing experiences over a year and needs to keep its special equipment up to date and in good condition. Donations from club sponsors Building & Engineering Services Association Yorkshire, and MainPro Ltd. who carried out the refurbishment, were also presented on the day – money that will be put to good use for disabled sailing.

The team of five 14 year olds took part in Stock Market Challenge, a business and enterprise event run by Leeds Beckett University and independent educational publisher 10 Lane Learning. Sally Greaney was awarded special commendation for her work as media analyst, which influenced her team’s decisions. “They made decisions under pressure and took calculated risks”, said business teacher, Luke Matterson. “This was a fun way of testing Mathematical expertise and stimulating interest in business and economics. Such events help to develop employability skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, so students leave school better prepared for the world of work, with the confidence to make sound choices.” Another Cardinal Heenan team made up of Hannah Blinston, Joseph Booth, Niamh Burke, Lottie Jordens-Harris and Edmond Nyantou secured a top ten place.

LBT Hosts Staff and students at Ralph Thoresby School are celebrating the outcome of a recent Ofsted inspection which found the school to be ‘Good’ in all aspects, recognising the significant improvements of recent years.

nspectors were impressed with the ‘calm and purposeful’ atmosphere around the school, which has seen GCSE and A Level results improve significantly in the last two years, and currently sits in fifth place in the city’s exam league tables for ‘value added’ performance at GCSE. The report comments that ‘Students are pleasant, polite and courteous and are proud of their school’. ‘Good and sometimes outstanding teaching’ and leadership which is ‘highly ambitious for the students’ has created a climate in which ‘students make exceptional progress’. The report makes it clear that Ralph Thoresby is a dynamic and forward thinking school where ‘morale is high and there is a culture of high expectations’. “The entire school community has worked incredibly hard to

move the school forward and we all deserve the accolades that this report brings”, said Head teacher Will Carr. “We will continue to be ambitious for the students and we are confident that we have the talent, the commitment and the momentum to improve still further and be recognised as ‘outstanding’.” As Year 12 student and aspiring medic, Shoaib Hussain, put it: “Every teacher at Ralph Thoresby is focused on helping you achieve and exceed your personal and academic targets. From amazing lessons to the huge number of extra-curricular activities, I know that the opportunities on offer at Ralph Thoresby make me stand out and be truly competitive when it comes to pursuing my longer-term ambitions.”

Junior Aquathlon Leeds & Bradford Triathlon Club is once again hosting the Junior Aquathlon (swim/run) on 17th May at The Edge Sports facility at Leeds University.

This friendly, welcoming event is the perfect chance for children and young people (aged 8 – 18) of all abilities to get involved with multi-sport – from first timers to athletes who hope to compete for the region. The aquathlon is held in the same 25m pool that the famous Brownlee brothers train in. This is followed by a fully marshaled run around campus. Entry is £13.50. The fee includes a British Triathlon race day license that provides civil liability and personal accident insurance cover whilst taking part in the event. There are prizes for the first three males and females in each age group and all finishers receive medals and a goody bag. For further information, visit www.tinyurl.com/ aquathlon2015

Leeds DEC has rewarded nine schools across West Yorkshire for leading the way in learning about Justice and Global issues. Each school wrote a Global Learning Charter and helped its students to lead peer education workshops on Fairtrade, waste and sweatshops. “The benefit of the Global Learning Charter is that it gives schools the opportunity to spell out their commitment to Global Learning and involve the students in deciding how they want to implement it across the school, said Global Fairness project co-ordinator, Hannah Langdana.

If you think your school deserves recognition for its Global Learning work, get in touch with Hannah! Hannah@ leedsdec.org.uk For more details about Leeds DEC see www.leedsdec.org.uk

Minister Visits Adel Primary Baroness Northover, Minister in the Department for International Development, visited Adel Primary School recently with Greg Mulholland MP to celebrate its work as part of DFID’s Connecting Classroom scheme and presented a number of Fairtrade awards.

Four pupils from Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School recently won the Leeds final of the UK Maths Challenge. hloe Facun (12), Chaewon Park Shim (12), Eamon Boyle-Smith (14), and Sean Carey (13), overcame teams from across the region. They will now compete against teams nationwide in the final at the Royal Horticultural Halls, London, on Monday 22nd June. The competing schools in the regional round were Abbey Grange CE Academy, Allerton High School, Carr Manor Community School, Cooperative Academy, De Lacy Academy, Fulneck School, Garforth Academy, Gateways School, Harrogate Grammar School, Harrogate Ladies’ College, Horbury Academy, Horsforth School, Kettlethorpe High School, King James School, Lawnswood School, Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Rodillian Academy, Roundhay School, St Aidan’s CE High School, St Mary’s Menston, Tadcaster Grammar, Farnley Academy, Freeston Academy, The Grammar School at Leeds, Morley

Academy and South Leeds Academy. The National Final, run by the UK Mathematics Trust, involves team of four pupils from Years 8 and 9 (England), Years 9 and 10 (Northern Ireland) and Years S1 and S2 (Scotland), competing in: • A group circus – involving practical maths problems; • A relay race – a combination of speed across the room and speed at solving maths problems; • A cross-number (mathematical crossword) with two members of the team working on the across clues and two on the down; • A series of shuttles where teams compete against the clock to answer a series of questions; and • A poster competition – designing a poster on a mathematical subject Almost 1700 schools entered the competition and 80 have qualified to take part in the final.

The Connecting Classroom scheme helps to incorporate international development work into the school curriculum. Adel Primary is partnered with Dumezweni School in Soweto, South Africa. The International School Council showed them around the school and told them all about the work the school is doing to promote, and raise money for Fair Trade and Red Nose Day. The Department for International Development is matching funds raised by schools. “I was delighted to be able to visit Adel Primary to see the work of the Connecting Classroom scheme”, said Greg. “The school has developed fantastic links with Dumezweni Primary School. I was particularly impressed with the work that the school and pupils are doing to mark both Fairtrade fortnight, and Red Nose Day.”
