PERCY DONALD (DON) ROBINS (1899-1948) A PRIEST WITH A MISSION – ‘NEW LIVES FOR OLD’

In 1930 Leeds was in the grip of the great depression. There were queues at the labour and dole offices; men walked the streets ashamed to go home without money for food. Some came looking for work, homeless and destitute. In that year a young parson, Don Robins, arrived in Leeds. His mission was to breathe new life into the huge, decaying St George’s Church, islanded among slum streets where unemployment had hit hard; his aim, to reach out to the poor and needy. He had to start from scratch, yet he founded a refuge, St George’s Crypt, which became a national landmark and today still follows his inspirational vision, offering support, shelter and friendship to those in need. Don Robins was 30 when he arrived in Leeds, at the start of a new phase in his life. Born in Aldershot in 1899, the sixth of seven children, he had had a comfortable, happy upbringing. He was still at Farnham Grammar School when war broke out in 1914, but as soon as he was 16 he enlisted. He finished up an officer in the newly-formed Royal Flying Corps, supplying the troops. Flying was still in its infancy and he needed courage and resource – once landing a damaged aircraft he had repaired with his handkerchief! In 1919, aged 19, he was awarded the Air Force Cross. After being demobbed he joined a civilian airline as a pilot, based at Croydon. Flying was still a risky business but he was game for everything. He took on other commitments too, leading a local scouts group and helping to get one going in Cologne, a frequent destination. And, in spite of family resistance, he married his longterm sweetheart, Alva Hall, from Farnborough – she was just nineteen. As a pilot he had a well-paid, adventurous job, but it was not enough. He felt a need for a spiritual vocation, and with support from his local vicar began studying for the Anglican Church. Money was raised

to send him to Cambridge, and he was ordained in 1927. After three active years as curate in Croydon, he applied for a vacancy in Leeds. He was young and inexperienced, but the Trustees for St George’s Church, serving the poor streets around the Infirmary, recognised his potential and appointed him as Vicar. Energetic, capable, inspiring, he declared from the start his vision of the church as a beacon and a refuge to the ‘hard-pressed wayfaring man on the road of life’ and he pledged himself to be ‘where the battle is hottest and the work is hardest’. A born organiser, he rallied helpers to join him. With no money except small donations he determined to provide a refuge for the unemployed and homeless. He knew Dick Sheppard and his work at St Martin’s-in-the-Field in London, and hit on the idea of converting the long-unused St George’s crypt. Dark, cold, gloomy, its floor crusted with mud, choked with rubbish, with gaping vaults and crumbling coffins, it couldn’t have been more unpromising, yet within a few months, with his band of helpers, he was able to open it as a daily shelter, providing warmth, companionship and cocoa to the many men who queued at its doors. It was immediately obvious that more was needed. Money was begged, hasty improvements made: by the end of 1930 the Crypt had become a night shelter too, providing basic beds for some 40 men, as well as food and practical help, including medical care and clothing. No one was turned away if there was space, and there were no rigid rules. Don, warm, sympathetic, humorous, was on hand to listen to the men’s stories, which often distressed him. But he had parish duties too, and more volunteers were always needed – when Don shook your hand you knew a job was lined up for you! Money was tight but he was a persuasive, inspiring speaker; his talks and radio broadcasts

brought in more donations and helped to spread the word. This meant some full-time staff could be employed, and the Crypt’s work could be extended to help women and children and families in need, particularly important during the war. Don seemed endlessly energetic but he was under strain, emotionally and physically. Ordered to rest in January 1948, he died just a month later. Thousands came to his funeral, and Wilfred Pickles came to present ‘Have a Go’ at the Crypt. There were many testimonies to the way the Crypt had changed people’s lives. Its work, adapted to changing needs, continues today. What better memorial could Don Robins have?

St George’s Crypt recently launched a new property development company, with a board of directors made up of some of the city’s leading property and construction experts, including Mark Henderson from Brewster Bye Architects, Jonathan Morgan, Morgans City Living, quantity surveyor and project manager Richard Cavadino, Joel Owen from The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and Reverend Jonathan Clark from St George’s Church. he Crypt has been at the frontline of support for homeless, disadvantaged and vulnerable people in Leeds and its surrounding areas since 1930, and the new St George’s Crypt Development Company will provide homes and community facilities specifically for them. The first site they plan to develop is next to Saint Hilda’s Church in Cross Green. It will offer 20 homes as well as a range of community facilities. The company is also hoping to redevelop and expand a hostel on Regent Terrace in Headingley that currently offers accommodation for ten alcohol dependent men. “As a company, we have a longstanding relationship with St George’s Crypt”, said Mark Henderson. “Over the last 20 years we have worked with the charity on a wide range of highly successful projects on a pro bono basis and it’s great to be taking it to the next level by launching this development company.” “The objective of St George’s Supported Living is to provide safe, managed homes for clients of The Crypt as they leave their addictions behind and work towards independence”, explained

Jonathan Morgan. “The sites in Cross Green and Headingley both offer great potential and we’re already considering several other sites across the city.” Martin Patterson from St George’s Crypt, says: “This exciting project will enable us to significantly expand the work that St George’s Crypt does in Leeds. We’re absolutely delighted to have such an experienced team on board who will all contribute towards ensuring our developments will be a success, as well as providing inspirational environments for our residents to make positive changes in their lives.”

Just over a year ago, Kieran Harris set up Harris Interiors, the Rodley- based bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms company. At the outset there was just Kieran, his father Trevor, whose support and expertise has been invaluable, and his wife Emily, who quickly slipped into the administrative role – this truly was a family affair. oday Kieran is a happy man. His dream of owning his own business and establishing an impressive showroom are a reality. He has grown his team to include three full time fitters and a showroom and installations manager. In this year alone he has already installed 46 bathrooms, 18 kitchens and seven bedrooms.

Pictured: Kieran and Emily with the team.

It has also been a steep learning curve. With a huge variety of suppliers to choose from he quickly learned which were the best to deal with – adding new lines that offered style, quality and value, and weeding out ones that did not. In every case he has been able to pass savings on to his customers, whilst ensuring the highest standards. For Kieran it’s all about the customer experience. One of the

things that spurred him on to open his own business was the buzz he got out of a job well done and happy customers. Of course, having achieved that, he wants more! You can sense that his eagerness and ambition won’t let him stop there. He plans to grow the business steadily, ensuring that quality and the customer remain king. “It has been hard work”, said Kieran, “but very satisfying. When

we were just installing bathrooms people started asking us to do more, so we introduced kitchens. Then a customer wanted fitted furniture in a bedroom and we mastered that. We thought it might stop there but I guess we must be doing something right because our customers want more! “The next things I would like to introduce are building, gas and electrical services. This would make Harris Interiors the one-stop-shop for all our customers’ needs. We are also planning to look at various finance options. I think in the past year we have established ourselves as a good company to deal with. I said last year that it all comes down to helping our customers get precisely what they want at a price that suits them, and for them to know that they will get excellent service and quality workmanship – that hasn’t changed, and it never will!” Harris Interiors, Wharfe Place, Rodley, Leeds LS13 1HS. Light Night 2015 is on Friday 9th October and is packed with over 60 free arts events for all the family. or one night only (6 – 11pm), Leeds city centre will come alive with spectacular large scale light projections, installations, exhibitions, film, dance, music and street performances. Many of the city’s public buildings will remain open until late as artists transform the spaces as temporary showcases for their work. Light Night has grown in popularity over the last ten years, last year attracting an estimated 50,000 people. As 2015 is the UNESCO International Year of Light, many of the artists are using this as an opportunity to celebrate the role light plays in our lives. Don’t miss the Light Night Lantern Parade, a procession through the city led by a giant illuminated owl, the symbol of Leeds!

One of this year’s highlights will be Whale Song on the South Bank, presented by LCI Production Ltd. This is a magical combination of light, sound and water, depicting a majestic whale surfacing from the waters of the River Aire. A whole range of amazing arts events will be held at over 35 locations in the city centre. New venues include The Tetley, the Queen’s Hotel and Kirkgate Market. To make sure you catch as many events as possible use the free hop-on hop-off Light Night Rider bus, which will be taking a circular journey around the city every 15 minutes, stopping in each of the zones.

For those on foot, expect some weird, wonderful and wacky Street Performers who are all set to entertain you as you stroll around the city, with music, comedy, dance, fire, drumming and puppetry. If all this activity makes you hungry, head for Cookridge Street, Millennium Square and Victoria Gardens. where you’ll find Light Night Bites – a selection of fabulous street food vendors. It was decided to save the mosaics he magnificent Merrion Centre mosaics created by Eric Taylor, artist and former Principal of Leeds College of Art (1956-1970), have been installed at Leeds College of Art’s Blenheim Walk building. The mosaics held a central position in Leeds for almost sixty years; fronting the junction of Merrion Way with Wade Lane, just behind the Merrion Centre. The refurbishment of the Centre meant that Taylor’s mosaics needed a new home. They are a significant part of the College’s heritage (the current Leeds College of Art mosaic signage at the Vernon Street building was also created by Eric Taylor), and so it was decided to save the mosaics and relocate them to Blenheim Walk.

and relocate them to Blenheim Walk Two of the College’s students were involved with the project, working with The Mosaic Restoration Company, to restore and document key moments of the restoration process over the past four months. The three mosaics have been erected on the side of the building and measure an impressive 14 metres in width, by two metres height.

Something we’re calling ‘Neo-Edwardian’ style is huge right now. If you’re not completely au fait with the interior décor aspect of this trend, you will have undoubtedly seen the gents sartorial equivalent the hipster, complete with impressive circus strong man beards, slicked hair and rampant tattoos! o spot a feature of NeoEdwardian style that we’re really excited about, take a look at the new US serial ‘The Knick’, starring the wonderfully odious Clive Owen as a cocaine addicted trailblazing surgeon working at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital at the turn of the 19th Century. The drama is totally addictive, but what you’ll find when you watch it is that your eyes are drawn towards the set design, which is brilliant. The Knickerbocker Hospital is the real star here, in all its utilitarian, clinical, and industrial beauty. Wrought iron meets oak and mahogany paneling, stripped wooden floors, precision white tiling, white metal trolleys and bedside cabinets. You can almost smell the carbolic soap and iodine. And, is it just us, or does vintage scientific equipment and ephemera make you go a bit doolally? Now wait, we’re not going all macabre medico-porn on you (yes there is such a thing!), the simplicity and functionality of, let’s say, an Edwardian haberdasher’s cabinet is included in this aesthetic, so too is a Globe Wernicke cabinet. It’s all about unadorned functional utilitarian oak cabinets, un-etched scientific repurposed glassware, and scientific instruments appreciated almost as

sculpture. Okay, so not everyone will appreciate and enjoy antique bedpans hung on the bathroom wall, though it worked for Marcel Duchamp, but this look is easily achievable if you stick to these principles:

Walls need to be white. It’s not a deal-breaker but it helps if you stick with a monochrome palette.

Tiling is a must. Think vintage public lavatory.

Instead of a new, run of the mill bathroom beaker, consider vintage scientific or medical glassware. Wash thoroughly and fill with bright green mouthwash!

Vintage industrial letters or signage look great too!

Be creative. Vintage enamel first aid cabinets make great bathroom cabinets and a Victorian porcelain lavatory chain pull, makes a great ceiling light switch. It’s a great look for a bathroom and makes a refreshing change from nauticalia and sea shells!

This year, Leeds College of Music (LCoM) celebrates ďŹ fty years of delivering music education and supporting music making in Leeds.

he College started life as Leeds Music Centre at the Leeds Institute (now Leeds City Museum) in 1965, providing 80 classes a week to 700 students. Its initial focus was on Jazz, and the centre played an integral part in the Leeds music scene. Its Light Music course gained graduate equivalent status in 1980. Learners could also gain qualifications in Indian and multicultural music, have individual instrumental tuition, join a band, choir or orchestra, as well as learn to repair and build instruments. In 1993 the College was incorporated as a Further

Education College, introducing the first Jazz degree in Europe. After moving to Quarry Hill in 1997 and cofounding Conservatoires UK in 2004, Leeds College of Music became the first UK conservatoire to offer degrees in Production, Popular Music and Music Business. In 2011 it became the first English conservatoire to hold the coveted All-Steinway School status, joining renowned institutions like Yale University’s School of Music and the Juilliard School, New York. It was also designated an Apple Authorised Training Centre, a regional hub for British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, and a Roland Academy. Today LCoM houses ten studios, 60 practice rooms, and on-site accommodation. It offers seven subject areas at undergraduate level, including two brand new degrees for 2016 in Film Music and New Music, as well as Masters level qualifications, and has a community of over 1,200 musicians.

As home of Yorkshire Young Musicians, the wellestablished Saturday Music School, and various short courses (from classical piano to Logic programming), the conservatoire caters for all ages and interests. It prides itself on making sure that music education is accessible to all. LCoM now has its sights set on becoming a leading European conservatoire. It is artistically ambitious, quality driven and industry focused, and is actively engaged in the future of music making, with an environment that nurtures independence and creativity.

Well, there’s been the calendar, the play and the movie…..could there really be another way to present the story of the Rylstone WI ladies and their naked charity calendar?

riter Tim Firth doubted it himself when the idea of a musical was originally mooted – he had been there and done that. But at that point he hadn’t been approached by Gary Barlow to work with him on an album of songs for women. All of a sudden here was the perfect scenario. An opportunity to open up the story of the Calendar Girls and look into the lives of the personalities involved in putting the calendar together. Gary and Tim actually grew up a few hundred yards apart in the same North Cheshire village, only realising this years later when they met up via a TV programme. Gary was just 16 and still at school, Tim was 21 and at university. From then on they kept in touch, their paths frequently crossing.

For Tim, childhood holidays spelt Wharfedale. They had a caravan in Appletreewick. So he already knew the area well. Some of the movie was shot in Burnsall…. and Rylstone was just up the road. He saw this as being the story of a small village – about husbands and children. It would capture the sense of the village green and The Dales. The ‘girls’ would talk about things in song that they would never have said in the play. It was another way of looking at the story, opening it out, changing the shape. “This is about the life of the village and the people in it – what’s going on around the creation of this calendar”, said Tim. “The

story is told through the music. The actual making of the calendar happens towards the end of the show. It was vital that people would buy into the characters and celebrate what makes these people so wonderful. Locating it so physically in the Yorkshire Dales…. the pressure to do it justice was massive.” This was the first time he and Gary had actually worked together. Gary had to respond to a very different set of lyrics and approach things from a very different angle. “He is a really hard worker”, said Tim. “Together we wrote around 80 songs to ensure that we had exactly the right tone for the show. This took us over two years and it is still evolving – and will probably continue doing so right up to opening night!” The Girls, directed by Roger Haines and Tim Firth, will première at the Grand Theatre from Saturday 14th November to Saturday 12th December. Tickets (£10 - £45) are available from 0844 848 2700 or leedsgrandtheatre. com Tim Firth has won the Olivier Award and UK Theatre Award for Best New Musical, and the British Comedy Awards Best Comedy Film for Calendar Girls.

Arts & Culture

The work of the Romantic polymath and Hip-Hop combine in this powerfully personal cultural mash-up. s local rapper/beatboxer/educator Andy Brooks (aka Testament/ Homecut) prepares to bring h i s first theatrical production to the West Yorkshire Playhouse stage this October, we sat down with him (fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe) to get an insight into how the project came about.

‘Blake Remixed’ explores what some may think the unlikely connections between the work of William Blake and contemporary Hip-Hop culture, filtered through Testament’s personal experience. When he first encountered Blake at school Testament says he didn’t immediately get it, but with a little more digging, Blake’s relevance and relateability soon became apparent. “I just connected with it being real, being about social justice and the search for spirituality and about government”, explained Andy. “Becoming real and accessible is what it’s all about really and the main reason I’m doing the show. “Hip-Hop is a multi-faceted culture – graffiti, B-Boying (breakdancing), DJing and MCing – and Blake was a visionary, multidisciplinary artist. He invented his own printing presses, was a great painter, wrote incredible poems, and spoke several languages. Music, specifically Hip-Hop, is my thing. I’m crap at graffiti and I can’t breakdance, so words and beats are where it’s at for me. I’d love to be a multi-talented renaissance man like Blake but I’m not there yet, it’s what I aspire to.” For Testament’s new foray into theatre he has enlisted the help of some outrageously talented friends and collaborators, including the internationally renowned champion turntablist, DJ Woody,

local pioneering visuals/projection wizard, Dave Lynch and Hip-Hop trailblazers Jehst, Shlomo, Ty and Soweto Kinch. With such an abundance of skills and talent, Blake Remixed looks set to be one this Autumn’s hottest tickets but the expansive nature of the project means it doesn’t stop at the stage production. There’s an album in the works, set to be released early in the new year, and Testament has already been approached by various educational institutions eager for him to workshop his unique approach to Blake with their students. Indeed, it was through his work with WYP’s youth outreach arm, First Floor that Blake Remixed got its initial boost, with the crew there offering backing, encouragement and support at the first mention of the idea prior to local theatre production company, Little Mighty getting on board. As a tribute to a visionary artist overlooked in his own lifetime, Blake Remixed adopts a strikingly fresh angle while also being an ode to the creative spirit and a celebration of UK Hip-Hop culture. It promises to be a show like no other and demands one’s attention. Blake Remixed is at West Yorkshire Playhouse from Thursday 8th – Saturday 10th October.

‘The Glass Cyphers’ exhibition at LeftBank Leeds on Cardigan Road is a collaboration between artists Paul Miller and Griet Beyaert and is a fusion of digital technology and glass-making in an experimental investigation of light and form. Multi-layered video will be projection-mapped onto sculpted glass works, suspended in LeftBank’s imposing space. This involves creating a complex virtual version of the sculptures which are then used as a mask for the light, so that no content is projected outside of the intended piece. The effect, as the audience moves beneath the pieces, will be of self-contained, floating light spaces. The perception of the solidity of objects is removed and new space is created. There will also be live visual mixing and sound performances each night during the installation. During installation (Tuesday 6th October 7 –7:45pm), Paul and Griet will give a talk explaining this magical process as part of the Headingley Festival of Ideas.

The effect will be of selfcontained, floating light spaces

Both Paul and Griet are based at East Street Arts Patrick Street Studios in Leeds. Griet works in glass, drawing and painting. Her work is informed by her interest in the human body and the transformation of spaces. Paul’s work takes the form of photography, painting and drawing, using traditional and digital media, video and

animation, and large-scale audiovisual installations, including live, multi-channel video mixing. The Glass Cyphers is at LeftBank from Thursday 8th October (7- 9pm), Friday 9th (6 - 12pm, Leeds Light Night), and Saturday 10th (12noon - 10:30pm)

The Finest War Play Ever Written

e are so lucky in Leeds! We don’t have just one great theatre – we have three – each with its own distinctive style and programme. And, although many may be unaware, outside the shows and entertainment they are hives of activity offering all kinds of opportunities for all ages. The City Varieties Music Hall (CVMH) celebrated 150 years of entertaining Leeds this year, so we popped down to discover more. Famous originally as a Music Hall, and then for the popular ‘Good Old Days’ on TV, today CVMH is Leeds’ premier venue for comedy, as well as presenting music, drama and pantomime. This gorgeous little theatre is the perfect venue for comedy and storytelling especially. Because of its size and layout performers have a real connection with the audience, and, true to its music hall heritage, audience members don’t hold back, but regularly question and fling suggestions at those on stage. Paul Merton has described it as his favourite theatre and, if you keep an eye on their programme you’ll see the same names popping up again and again….because they love to perform here. This Autumn Josh Widdicombe, Patrick Kielty, Rob Beckett, Chris Ramsey, Ed Byrne, and Mike Harding are all lined up to appear; with Judy Collins, Andy McKee, Elkie Brooks, Jonathan Antoine, Chas and Dave and Showaddywaddy providing some great music. Behind the scenes, during the day and before the stage comes to life, the education team takes over. Thousands and thousands of people have discovered forgotten stories, participated in learning events, performed in project work,

Adel Players will perform the World War One play ‘Journey’s End’ by RC Sherriff at Adel Memorial Hall, Church Lane, LS16 from Wednesday 21st – Saturday 24th October, at 7.30pm.

listened to talks and explored behind the scenes. During the Summer, traditionally a quieter time for theatres, the City Varieties Youth Theatre, Summer Schools and Family Workshops take over with circus skills, clowning, dancing and singing, stage make up and set design. During term time they run a programme that ties in with the school curriculum. It is amazing how the theatre can inspire a learning programme – from history through storytelling and drama, to specialized Maths Days which can involve everything from counting seats, ticketing and stagecraft to lines of symmetry and design features. Set in a front line dugout near St Quentin in northern France and hailed as the finest war play ever written, it tells the story of a small group of officers and men in an infantry battalion as they prepare to face the Germans’ Spring offensive of 21st March 1918. ‘Journey’s End’ was first performed in 1928, with Laurence Olivier in the role of Captain Stanhope. “Performing a play acknowledged by Winston Churchill as depicting living history is a huge privilege”, said director Bernard Riley. “We’re determined to show our audiences as truthfully as we can what the men who served in that conflict had to live through.” Tickets (£8) are available from 0113 275 5585 or tickets@ adel-players.org.uk

Firm of Poets visits The Hub in Holbeck on Sunday 8th November. The group of four poets will perform a mixture of spoken word pieces, as well as encouraging budding poets to take to the stage for the first time. The Firm will hold a workshop in the afternoon of the performance, offering local poets advice and techniques on how to perfect their craft. Participants will then be invited to perform that evening. “This is the first time we have involved the audience in this way”, said founding member Ralph Dartford. “We can’t wait to meet budding poets and help them

t Gemma’s Hospice invites you to help them make their Festive Bucket Collection on Saturday 21st November (9am – 5pm), their Biggest Bucket Collection Ever! The charity aims to raise £8,000 in just eight hours! This is the one day of the year that the Hospice has a permit to collect all around Leeds. It’s a great opportunity to volunteer on your local high street or outside your local St Gemma’s Shop, and you can collect for however long you’d like. St Gemma’s staff will be in the city centre, with festive entertainment, a stall and refreshments. St Gemma’s makes life better for people with cancer and other

life limiting illnesses. Expert medical care is provided around the clock. Everyone is treated as an individual, ensuring their emotional and spiritual wellbeing is looked after – this extends to friends and family, who can access advice and bereavement support. St Gemma’s care is provided completely free of charge. However, every year the Hospice has to raise £6.2 million to continue providing it – which is why they need your help with this annual collection. Organised by Leeds Federated Housing Association (LFHA), the volunteers came from the Housing Association, community organisations, Sure Group and Keepmoat Property Services. Mitie and their partner Akzonobel/Dulux Paints donated the equipment and materials needed to paint the fences and supervised the work. The clear up was scheduled to take place before work started on a skate park, requested by residents during a community consultation organised by LFHA and for which they managed to secure funding. “Local residents said they wanted the land put to good use for the community and the clear up was the first step towards turning the area into a useful outdoor space for people to enjoy”, said Cath Nelson, LFHA Neighbourhood Initiatives

The land has been unused for many years and it’s fantastic to see so many volunteers work together to transform it.” Other organisations who supported the tidy up were Leeds Youth Offending Service, Unity Homes & Enterprise, First Bus and Hyde Park Source.

‘Stories from the War Hospital’ gives a fascinating insight into the extraordinary lives and loves of those who worked at what was officially named the 2nd Northern General Hospital during the First World War. Based at Beckett Park in Headingley, this large military hospital played a key role in the struggle against death, disease and disability throughout its wartime history. Its story has now been told in compelling detail by Richard Wilcocks. Using material gathered from interviews with descendants, together with research in local and national archives, Richard compiled a comprehensive account of the patients, doctors, surgeons, nurses, volunteers and entertainers who shaped the hospital’s history, richly illustrated with newly-discovered photographs.

This new money will help even more people year away from the Battle of the Somme Centenary, Greg Mulholland MP is encouraging communities across Leeds North West to apply for Heritage Lottery Funding to explore the impact of the war in Leeds. Following the success of its community grants programme First World War: then and now, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has made an additional £4million available in 2015/16 for communities to explore, conserve and share local heritage of WWI. Grants of between £3,000 and £10,000 are available. Thanks to this funding, thousands of young people and communities throughout the UK have already been involved in activities marking the Centenary

such as: researching and recording local heritage; conserving and finding out more about war memorials; and sharing the fascinating stories they uncover. This new money will help even more people to get involved and explore a greater range of stories, including those surrounding the Battle of the Somme. “The projects and stories that have already been shared have been an inspiration”, said Greg. “It’s very important that we remember the impact of this war. he Steering Group for Headingley Neighbourhood Plan is proposing as its Vision, “To develop a sustainable, inclusive and mixed community in Headingley.” Earlier this year, the Group consulted all those who live, work or study in Headingley Neighbourhood, circulating over 5,000 leaflets, and contacting nearly 300 organisations. The Group sought views on the Vision, and also asked about Objectives. The single most popular Objective was ‘to preserve greenspace and trees’. But this is already covered in Headingley’s Neighbourhood Design Statement (copies available at HEART).

The Vision is to develop a sustainable, inclusive and mixed community in Headingley

Equally important were Objectives concerned with promoting a mixed population (balancing the generations), making Headingley family friendly, and diversifying housing provision. The Steering Group, therefore, is proposing that the priority for the Plan should be housing policies, which underlie all these. The current proposals will be put to Headingley Neighbourhood Forum at its next meeting on Tuesday 6th October, 7 – 8pm in Headingley Parish Hall (part of the Festival of Ideas). This will be preceded by an open public discussion on Changing Headingley. Everyone who lives, works or studies in the area (which extends from

ENDS 27TH SEPTEMBER

Beckett’s Park to North Hyde Park, and from Shaw Lane to Victoria Road) is invited. The discussion will be followed by the formal meeting of the Forum, which is open to the public. Also on the Forum’s agenda will be the Community Infrastructure Levy, a new means of raising funding from new developments to support the infrastructure provided by the Council. Extra funding comes to neighbourhoods with a Plan, and the Council is considering how that funding should be spent.

Greg Mulholland MP recently raised the story of Otley solicitor Thomas Constable and the 500 refugees he saved during the Potato Famine in the late 19th century in the Irish Parliament. reg was in Ireland for the first meeting of the Global Irish Parliamentarians Forum. He and fellow parliamentarians with Irish connections from around the world became the first non-Heads of State to speak in the Dáil in a historic first meeting of the new forum. Otley is strongly connected with County Mayo in the West of Ireland, with most people of Irish descent in the town having come from there during the Famine. Thomas Constable saved hundreds of lives by arranging passage, jobs and homes for people coming to Otley and the town continues to have strong links with the county. Mulholland is also leading a campaign to raise funds for a statue of Thomas Constable in the town. He, together with the then Mayor, Ray Smith, and local historian Chris Power, visited Ballina in Mayo in 2011 and Chris has written a booklet documenting the history of the Irish in Otley. Greg also linked the Thomas Constable story to the current refugee crisis, saying that it showed that Otley, Leeds and Yorkshire have always been prepared to welcome refugees at times of crisis, a tradition that must continue. “It was a real honour to be asked to speak on the floor of the Dáil and very special to be able to raise the story of how Thomas Constable and his sister saved the

lives of refugees fleeing an Gorta Mor in the 19th century”, said Greg. “This is a very important part of Otley’s history and one the town should be very proud of. At the time of this appalling humanitarian disaster, with a disgraceful response from the UK Government, an Otley man welcomed refugees into the town and saved many lives. The descendants of these people live in the town today. “It was also very timely, given the ongoing crisis in Syria and the Mediterranean. We need to remember that the UK and Yorkshire have long assisted those fleeing persecution and destitution, a tradition we must now continue by following Thomas Constable’s heroic example.”

LASBT Action on Noise Nuisance Complaints Improves Greatly Recent statistics show great progress in response from the Council’s anti-social behaviour team to noise nuisance complaints in Headingley, which comes after calls from councillors for a greater local focus in responding to antisocial behaviour complaints in Leeds.

Take on the challenge of a lifetime in 2016 in aid of St Gemma’s Hospice. he Hospice has planned a spectacular trek across the historic Great Wall of China – one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Over five days you will trek across vast areas and visit remote sections rarely seen by tourists. You’ll have the opportunity to climb the 1,000 steps up to the Wall at Mutianyu and the ‘Heavenly Ladder’, as well as being able to lend a hand at restoring a section of the wall known as a watch tower. You will also visit Beijing, the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, and celebrate with dinner before flying home to the UK.

With daily Hospice running costs of over £24,000, support through overseas challenges like this is so important. All of St Gemma’s services are free of charge to patients, so they rely on fundraising experiences to raise vital funds to care for people with life limiting illnesses. For more information call Charlotte on 0113 218 5580, email challenges@st-gemma.co.uk, or visit www.overseaschallenges. org.uk

Over 90% of anti-social behaviour enquiries to the Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Team (LASBT) daytime service in 2014/15 related to noise nuisance, with over 600 additional calls made to the out of hours service. This was a reduction from 2013/14, when over 700 calls were made. Two hundred and twenty four Noise Abatement notices were issued in 2014/15, compared to two in 2013/14, representing a significant shift in the response from the Council. “These figures highlight the hard work over the last few years by the Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Teams to respond quickly and effectively to local residents’ concerns about antisocial behaviour and in particular noise nuisance”, said Councillor Janette Walker. “With so many residents satisfied with the service, this presents an encouraging picture for the future and I hope to see the good work continue. I am committed to ensuring noise nuisance complaints remain a high priority and are resolved as quickly as possible.”

Cycling In Leeds I was recently asked what the Council was doing to encourage and promote cycling in the city. Leeds has policies to encourage more cycling. Measures being taken include improvements to the infrastructure for cycling – the provision of cycle tracks away from roads, cycle lanes adjacent to traffic lanes, cycle parking, 20mph zones surrounding schools, and the inclusion of cycling facilities in planned developments such

The £30m City Connect scheme includes the construction of a cycle route along the A64 from Seacroft into Leeds City Centre, and onwards on the A647 to Bradford City Centre. Martin Staniforth from Headingley, a Leeds Mencap Trustee recently pledged £100,000 to ‘Space for Me’, the charity’s most recent fundraising campaign which aims to establish a new centre in East Leeds for people with learning disabilities and local residents. Martin’s involvement with Leeds Mencap spans more than a decade. Despite a lack of personal experience of learning disabilities, he quickly found an emotional connection. “There is no cure for learning disabilities and families sometimes feel there’s nowhere to go”, said Martin. “People see Leeds Mencap as a lifeline. I see it as a place where there is some seriously good work in a very difficult field. I couldn’t help but be inspired. “Since I joined the organisation, the reduction of statutory funding has made us improve, work smarter, and make sure we do as much as we can to help families in Leeds.” By 2010, Martin was on the Board of Trustees. As the organisation has grown, waiting lists for services have developed and some staff are now working out of temporary offices. The charity decided to move to

bigger premises. Although other areas of Leeds must have seemed attractive, Leeds Mencap remained committed to the local community and would like to encourage others to invest in the area. The new centre will mean a major investment of over £2.5million, which will benefit more than 2,000 people a year. It will also represent a significant increase in support for people with learning disabilities across Leeds. Martin had planned to leave a legacy to Leeds Mencap, but the campaign to build a new centre has provided an opportunity to make the donation in his lifetime, so he will be able to see the benefit of his donation. “Leeds Mencap

is a rare organisation. I care passionately about its future and want to see it thrive and be able to help even more people across Leeds. ” The Space for me campaign is seeking a further £660,000 to make the new centre a reality. For more information, visit www.leedsmencap.org.uk/ spaceforme

n Saturday 17th October at HEART in Headingley, and all over the country, there will be celebrations of apples and the fruits of our gardens, allotments and open spaces. These are always fun occasions, but with an underlying important message – that diversity matters, that greening our surroundings matters, and that in all our lives we need to be mindful of cherishing the natural world and stepping lightly on the planet. Headingley Apple Day follows that spirit. You can take a turn pressing apples or just enjoy the freshly pressed juice listening to great local musicians, jig along

with the Morris dancers, browse the stalls (and buy a huge range of apple varieties!), learn to make your own cider, and how to have a beefriendly garden. There is also lots for children to do, including crafts, a storyteller and the mysterious magician Dr Marvello! And importantly, you can join in the conversation about how we can all live more greenly with a local expert. Do you have apples you can donate to the apple pressing? Picked is best, but organisers are also happy to arrange to pick them for you. Contact 07788 190589, or info@headingleydevelopmenttrust. org.uk

Leeds Law Society recently presented £2,000 to Lineham Farm Centre, which provides residential facilities for children from across the city. orking in partnership with the Leeds Community Foundation (LCF), Leeds Law Society chose to donate the money to Lineham Farm as part of their President’s Charity. The money will go towards refurbishing the bathrooms in the Courtyard Cottage. Each week Lineham Farm accommodates groups of up to 30 young people from a range of backgrounds and organises a variety of exciting, fun activities, including cycling, bushcraft, high ropes, archery, and orienteering.

LCF helps hundreds of charities and voluntary organisations to make a difference to thousands of people every year, through large projects like funding new community centres, or by providing smaller grants and advice. Since 2005 they have helped individuals and local businesses give back to their local community and in turn help over 200,000 people in the city.

Twenty four different real ales will be available along with a choice of wine and cider. Local businesses are sponsoring each of the beers. All proceeds will go to local worthy causes, including LS29, a charity for families that have children with additional needs. It provides a social network for sharing experiences and knowledge with parents and activities for children in a safe, inclusive environment. Entry is by ticket only (£5 per person which includes a souvenir glass, two half pints and a programme). Additional beers can be purchased. Sessions are from 7-11pm each evening and 1-4pm on Saturday. Pie and peas will be on sale. There will be raffles, auctions and games to entertain. Home & Garden

he nuthatch is a distinctive small bird of woodland, that can be found anywhere with mature deciduous trees, such as large gardens or parks like Roundhay or Golden Acre. They are blue-grey on top and a lovely reddy-brown underneath, with a daggerlike black bill and a clear black stripe through the eye. Whilst they can be difficult to spot, their loud, persistent tuit-tuittuit territorial call gives them away, often sounding as though it comes from a much larger bird. They forage restlessly for insects beneath the bark of trees, and for nuts and seeds in season, and can sometimes be heard tap-taptapping up in the canopy. This

sound comes from their habit of wedging the nut in a crevice in the bark and hammering away to open it – also, incidentally, the origin of their name. Nuthatches are the only British bird to move head first down tree trunks. These very active birds also move up the trunk and along the underside of branches, sometimes even foraging on the ground. The nuthatch breeds throughout England, and recently has started to move into southern Scotland. It often appears on bird feeders, particularly favouring peanuts, and can be quite aggressive towards other garden birds.

Home & Garden

As the days grow shorter and the weather cooler there are many jobs to do in the garden. Autumn Leaves

In the Border

The autumn leaves seem like both a blessing and a curse at times. They certainly create plenty of work to clear them from lawns and paths but they often bring a magnificent show of colour before they fall. Other benefits include being able to make leaf mould by simply leaving them in a bin bag that has a few small holes in it. Put the bag in a corner out of the way and in a year or so you will have a wonderful dark, crumbly soil conditioner. If you can bear to be a little untidy, a leaf pile in a corner of the garden will provide a great home and hibernation material for wildlife.

All my borders are getting congested as clumps of perennials like Campanula and Geranium are getting larger and larger and squeezing out less robust plants. It’s time to lift out each clump and split it into smaller pieces with a spade or by prying it apart using two garden forks back to back. Re plant a little, and give the rest away to your gardening friends or take it to a plant swap such as the one run by REAP at the Oakwood Farmers’ market in October. It’s also a great opportunity to change your planting layout if you have anything that is in the wrong place.

Other Jobs

The autumn leaves seem like both a blessing and a curse. But

Some gardeners like to cut back dead perennials this month, although some have attractive seed heads that will attract birds in the winter months so I often leave them standing until the Spring. Lawns can still be cut as long as the weather is not frosty, and it is a great time to re-seed and renovate your lawn.

Their virtuosic instrumentals of banjo and violin mixed with cello and foot percussion, create an exciting blend of musical genres that include folk, rock, bluegrass, and roots music. Their original lyrics, conveyed through powerful three-part vocals, are both gritty and poignant. he all-female group met while studying classical music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and were united by their eclectic musical interests. Harpeth Rising began touring in 2010, performances including the Cambridge Folk Festival, Fylde Folk Festival, Purbeck Folk Festival, Frome Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, Blissfest, Woodsongs OldTime Radio Hour, The Bluebird, and The Green Note. Nicki Allen Launches ‘For Life’ a Song of Hope Award winning jazz vocalist Nicki Allan launched her new charity single, ‘For Life’, at the Chapel Allerton Arts Festival in September. icki wrote the song after attending the funeral of Nick Laycock, a friend from her music student days in Leeds, who passed away five years ago after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. “On returning from Nick’s funeral I felt compelled to compose a piece of music in his memory”, said Nicki. “The melody was easy but I could only think of a few lines here and there for the words, so assigned the task to another friend, Johanne Levy, who was going through breast cancer at the time. She wrote the lyrics, but it was another four years before the song was recorded. “In January I found a lump and, although it initially turned my life upside down, once I got my head around things I wanted to help spur on the fight to find a cure for this terrible disease that was threatening to take my life.” Nicki enlisted the help of two friends and former band-mates to record the song - musician and sound engineer Pete Neville, and Paul Twohig, who runs Pro2 Recording Studio in Castleford. Nicki’s nephew, Niall Robinson, plays drums. His mum (Nicki’s sister) was diagnosed

with breast cancer at the age of 40. Paul’s father has undergone treatment for cancer twice, while Stella Midgeley Young, guitarist, lost her mother to the disease. “Everyone involved with the song has a strong connection to cancer”, said Nicki. “It brought us all together to do something positive. This is a song of hope for all people affected by cancer. It’s

about how important it is to see the bigger picture and appreciate the small things in life. ” All the money raised through downloads of ‘For Life’ on iTunes and the sale of CDs (available from www.nickiallan.com) will go to Yorkshire Cancer Research to be spent on local projects, and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Hardy’s

FILM

REVIEW BY BRENDAN CAMPBELL

LEGEND DIRECTED BY: BRIAN HELGELAND STARRING: : TOM HARDY, EMILY BROWNING, CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON, TARON EGERTON, DAVID THEWLIS

performance is too big for the flimsy and underpowered script attempting to contain it

CERT: 18 - RUNNING TIME: 131 MINS om Hardy is quite rightly riding high at the moment and looks to continue enjoying his moment in the sun for some time yet. Having established himself as a capable and versatile leading man who can handle the physical theatrics of high octane action such as Mad Max: Fury Road as well as the confined, low-key drama of a film like Locke, we’ve yet to see Hardy out of his depth or in a role he doesn’t confidently take in his stride.

And so it is here. Unfortunately, though, even Hardy’s excellent and captivating duel performance as both Ronnie and Reggie Kray can’t elevate this by-thenumbers retro gangster flick above the mediocre. Told from the perspective of Reggie’s wife, Frances, Legend picks up the story as the Kray twins have already gained some notoriety and the beginnings of local celebrity status. Reggie, the dapper and charming man about town is under police surveillance while the seriously unhinged Ron languishes in a psych ward following a stint in the clink. After intimidating a doctor into giving Ronnie a clean bill of mental health and securing his release the twins are reunited and set about expanding their criminal empire and seeing off

their gangland rivals. Frances’ viewpoint offers a window into the world of the Krays and we see their relationship grow ever more fractious as Ronnie becomes increasingly reckless and unpredictable. As I say, Hardy does a

sterling job of portraying the very different brothers but it’s almost as if his performance is too big for the flimsy and underpowered script attempting to contain it. Emily Browning is decent enough in the role of Frances but her narrative voiceover seems an unnecessary device and quickly grows wearing. Director Helgeland has more previous experience as a screenwriter than a helmsman with some impressive credentials to his name (the screenplay for LA Confidential to name one) but Legend finds both his writing and directing duties sorely lacking. The film loses momentum long before the third act and eventually, half-heartedly fizzles out. The art direction is so hyper stylised as to appear almost cartoonish and the prowling Steadicam shots soundtracked

by classic sixties soul and pop cuts serves only to remind one how much better Scorsese has done the true-life gangster movie. If nothing else, at least the wardrobe department bring their A game; everyone is immaculately well turned out and it must be said that Hardy can wear the hell out of a suit. With the abundance of high end tailoring, classic motors and cockney geezer-ish banter, Legend seems like it belongs to the glut of Brit-gangster movies from about a decade ago which seemed pitched squarely at a lads-mag reading type of audience, albeit a rather watered down and oddly bloodless example of the genre. The fact that Tom Hardy has electrifying screen presence and charisma to spare is perhaps the only redeeming feature of this sadly disappointing film.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

This year it will be offering even more opportunities for children to enjoy classical music, with an expanding series of performances, special concerts and workshops to inspire both children and adults. ‘Musical Rumpus’ on 29th October will encourage toddlers and their families to discover music making, as part of an interactive, multi-sensory experience in the Howard Assembly Room. awnswood School would like to invite you to its seventh annual Art & Design Technology Exhibition from 6-8pm on Thursday 15th October. The exhibition will showcase the best of Lawnswood talent in paintings, drawings, sculpture, textiles, 3D and multimedia from across all year groups. It will also include work from Year 6 primary school children who attended ‘art workshops’ run by the Lawnswood Art Department earlier in the year. This joint project between school staff, students and the ‘Friends of Lawnswood’ association aims to inspire students by exhibiting their work to a professional standard, mimicking an exhibition ‘opening’

with music, refreshments and artwork descriptions. Some of the exhibits will take you on the artist’s journey from first inspiration and conception, to development and final output.

The standard of work continues to be exceptional and there will be an opportunity to commission and purchase particular pieces. Entry to the Exhibition is free and the audience will be asked to vote for five different prize categories across the year groups.

Greg Mulholland MP is encouraging local schools to arrange visits for pupils to the Houses of Parliament, or to contact him if they would like to host a ‘mini-Parliament’. arliament recently opened its first dedicated Education Centre, which aims to welcome 100,000 school visitors a year. It houses Parliament-themed workshop rooms and state-ofthe-art technology, including a 360° projection space, bringing Parliamentary events to life. Other than tours of the Houses of Parliament and sitting in on MPs and peers debating, workshops are available which cover a range of topics – from the history of Parliament to how laws are made and how elections work. Pupils are also taught how parliamentarians debate and get a chance to practice debating themselves. In November, during Parliament Week, which will mark 750 years since elected representatives first convened in Westminster, Greg Mulholland will welcome pupils from Ireland Wood Primary School. Subsidies are available to support travel costs. Greg also regularly does ‘miniParliament’ events, where he visits schools to host a parliamentarystyle debate. He visited Queensway Primary School in June and will be visiting St Chad Primary in October. “I really enjoy hosting local schools in Parliament, or visiting them for mini-Parliament events”,

Above all, they also find them great fun!” Bookings for tours and workshops are in high demand. Cones Make New Friends – Another Book in The Cones Series Chris Madeley’s first book, ‘Meet the Cones’ introduced the concept that traffic cones really do have a life of their own! Now she has taken the ‘conecept’ further with her second book in the series – ‘Cones Make New Friends’. Conerad and Conestance are never satisfied – they want to explore, have adventures, and make new friends. The first is Cone-Vera who was standing next to Conestance on the motorway. She is quite knowledgeable, observant and always on a quest to learn more. The three Cones woggle off up the motorway, being careful to observe the first Cone Rule: when humans look at the Cones they are Just Cones: no faces, no voices, no hands, no movement.

Next they meet Signboard who teaches them about cats’ eyes and the purpose of junctions. Then they meet the ‘baddie’ Cone Collector. Obviously, Cones don’t like to be stacked as they then can’t escape to have adventures, so being stacked

is their greatest fear. Of course, one of them gets caught and stacked and the other two find an old friend to help. During the rescue, they meet a cheeky Cone called Conen, who immediately gets them into trouble and this will be par for the course as they go forward. So, our four friends go out into the big wide world and have adventures. The stories are designed to help children to learn to live and play within parameters based on moral and ethical values with safety as a central point. Book Three, when the Cones discover the fun and dangers of railways, is already underway!

Younger Life

One World Day at Carr Manor Carr Manor Community School recently celebrated the diversity and different cultures represented at the school.

John Tranmer, the longest serving head of an independent school in Leeds recently left the Froebelian School in Horsforth after 24 years. he school organised several celebrations to bid him farewell. Renowned for his colourful ties, ‘Mr T’, as he was affectionately known was treated to a surprise assembly when children, teachers and invited guests all wore bright ties. He was also tested on his knowledge of the school’s history as he became the first ever contestant on ‘Who Wants to be a Froebelianaire’! A special booklet celebrating his career was distributed to guests on Speech Day. Chair of Governors, Ravi Naru, wrote: “I would like to thank Mr Tranmer for creating and maintaining an atmosphere in which our children could reach their potential and move on.”

Former deputy head, Anita Tansley, commented: “In all the years I was Deputy Head, he relentlessly put the success of the school and the good of the children first.” When asked what he would miss the most, he said: “I will miss the children. Their energy, enthusiasm and sense of fun has always inspired me, even on those days when things don’t seem to go right.” Although leaving school, John Tranmer will continue to work in the educational sphere as he takes up his new post as chairman of the Independent Association of Prep Schools.

One World Day is an important event in the school calendar, and this year pupils organised a series of internationallyinspired activities, including sport, food, and the arts culminating in performances showcasing the range of heritages at Carr Manor School. “We know it is a diverse community”, said Project Manager Melissa Byrne, “but when everybody comes together to watch a performance it gives it a community atmosphere, which we like to celebrate.” Different international food dishes – from American and Italian to Indian – were served every day and the pupils drew up menus, taking inspiration from their favourite meals. They also made flags and banners that were pinned up around the refectory, and were used in a parade around the school’s forum.
