In 1930 Leeds was in the grip of the great depression. There were queues at the labour and dole offices; men walked the streets ashamed to go home without money for food. Some came looking for work, homeless and destitute. In that year a young parson, Don Robins, arrived in Leeds. His mission was to breathe new life into the huge, decaying St George’s Church, islanded among slum streets where unemployment had hit hard; his aim, to reach out to the poor and needy. He had to start from scratch, yet he founded a refuge, St George’s Crypt, which became a national landmark and today still follows his inspirational vision, offering support, shelter and friendship to those in need. on Robins was 30 when he arrived in Leeds, at the start of a new phase in his life. orn in Aldershot in 1899, the si th of seven children, he had had a comfortable, happy upbringing. He was still at arnham Grammar School when war broke out in 1914, but as soon as he was 16 he enlisted. He nished up an o cer in the newly-formed Royal lying Corps, supplying the troops. lying was still in its infancy and he needed courage and resource once landing a damaged aircraft he had repaired with his handkerchief n 1919, aged 19, he was awarded the Air orce Cross.

Just over a year ago, Kieran Harris set up Harris Interiors, the Rodley- based bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms company. At the outset there was just Kieran, his father Trevor, whose support and expertise has been invaluable, and his wife Emily, who quickly slipped into the administrative role – this truly was a family affair. oday Kieran is a happy man. His dream of owning his own business and establishing an impressive showroom are a reality. He has grown his team to include three full time fitters and a showroom and installations manager. In this year alone he has already installed 46 bathrooms, 18 kitchens and seven bedrooms.

Something we’re calling ‘Neo-Edwardian’ style is huge right now. If you’re not completely au fait with the interior décor aspect of this trend, you will have undoubtedly seen the gents sartorial equivalent the hipster, complete with impressive circus strong man beards, slicked hair and rampant tattoos! o spot a feature of NeoEdwardian style that we’re really excited about, take a look at the new US serial ‘The Knick’, starring the wonderfully odious Clive Owen as a cocaine addicted trailblazing surgeon working at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital at the turn of the 19th Century. The drama is totally addictive, but what you’ll find when you watch it is that your eyes are drawn towards the set design, which is brilliant. The nickerbocker Hospital is the real star here, in all its utilitarian, clinical, and industrial beauty. Wrought iron meets oak and mahogany paneling, stripped wooden oors, precision white tiling, white metal trolleys and bedside cabinets. ou can almost smell the carbolic soap and iodine. And, is it ust us, or does vintage scienti c e uipment and ephemera make you go a bit doolally Now wait, we re not going all macabre medico-porn on you yes there is such a thing , the simplicity and functionality of, let s say, an dwardian haberdasher s cabinet is included in this aesthetic, so too is a Globe Wernicke cabinet.

Well, there’s been the calendar, the play and the movie…..could there really be another way to present the story of the Rylstone WI ladies and their naked charity calendar?

But at that point he hadn’t been approached by Gary Barlow to work with him on an album of songs for women. All of a sudden here was the perfect scenario. An opportunity to open up the story of the Calendar Girls and look into the lives of the personalities involved in putting the calendar together. And, although many may be unaware, outside the shows and entertainment they are hives of activity offering all kinds of opportunities for all ages. The City arieties Music Hall C MH celebrated 1 0 years of entertaining Leeds this year, so we popped down to discover more. amous originally as a Music Hall, and then for the popular Good ld ays on T , today C MH is Leeds premier venue for comedy, as well as presenting music, drama and pantomime.

‘The Glass Cyphers’ exhibition at LeftBank Leeds on Cardigan Road is a collaboration between artists Paul Miller and Griet Beyaert and is a fusion of digital technology and glass-making in an experimental investigation of light and form. Multi-layered video will be projection-mapped onto sculpted glass works, suspended in LeftBank’s imposing space. This involves creating a complex virtual version of the sculptures which are then used as a mask for the light, so that no content is projected outside of the intended piece. The e ect, as the audience moves beneath the pieces, will be of self-contained, floating light spaces. The perception of the solidity of ob ects is removed and new space is created. There will also be live visual mi ing and sound performances each night during the installation.

The effect will be of selfcontained, floating light spaces

How often are transport pro ects in the North downgraded or delayed simply to complete pro ects elsewhere efore the General lection the rime Minister and Chancellor were promising Trans ennine rail electrification, but almost as soon as the polls closed, this was paused indefinitely by Network Rail due to cost overruns on rail pro ects in the South West.

Home & Garden

he nuthatch is a distinctive small bird of woodland, that can be found anywhere with mature deciduous trees, such as large gardens or parks like Roundhay or Golden Acre. They are blue-grey on top and a lovely reddy-brown underneath, with a daggerlike black bill and a clear black stripe through the eye. Whilst they can be di cult to spot, their loud, persistent tuit-tuittuit territorial call gives them away, often sounding as though it comes from a much larger bird. They forage restlessly for insects beneath the bark of trees, and for nuts and seeds in season, and can sometimes be heard tap-taptapping up in the canopy. This

sound comes from their habit of wedging the nut in a crevice in the bark and hammering away to open it also, incidentally, the origin of their name.

Home & Garden

As the days grow shorter and the weather cooler there are many jobs to do in the garden. Autumn Leaves The autumn leaves seem like both a blessing and a curse at times. They certainly create plenty of work to clear them from lawns and paths but they often bring a magni cent show of colour before they fall. ther bene ts include being able to make leaf mould by simply leaving them in a bin bag that has a few small holes in it. ut the bag in a corner out of the way and in a year or so you will have a wonderful dark, crumbly soil conditioner. f you can bear to be a little untidy, a leaf pile in a corner of the garden will provide a great home and hibernation material for wildlife.

TCV Wins Green Flag Award

In Response…….

The Conservation Volunteers’ (TCV) Hollybush Conservation Centre in Kirkstall has been recognised with a fourth successive Green Flag Community Award for their work to maintain and develop the garden at the centre.

Without C 2 mankind would have died out a long time ago. Trees plants etc. actually take in C 2 and give out o ygen 2. Also, C 2 does N T increase warming, it s the other way around

The Green lag Awards scheme recognises the best green spaces in the country. TC centres are regular recipients of these awards.

Following the publication of an article from REAP in last month’s magazine, Stevie Orlson contacted us with the following comment: “The tired old phrase ‘the science is settled’ is now long worn out. In fact, it is settled in completely the other direction. Not opinions etc. either.”

X-Ray Cat Trio Album Launch at Temple of Boom

ith frontman-singerguitarist Nico having recently parted ways with burgeoning goth-metal juggernaut Black Moth in order to devote his full attention to the trio, the boys have wasted no time in getting down to business and they release their first full length album on 30th October.

A blast of Surf/Punk Rock ‘n’ Roll from a feline three-piece, that can see through stuff? This can mean only one thing; the welcome and long awaited return of X-Ray Cat Trio!

udging from what we ve heard, the album, ut for lood sees -Ray Cat Trio on top form hammering out their characteristic e pert blend of blues, rockabilly, surf-rock, garage and punk, coming across like ick ale meets Link Wray with a tip of the hat in the direction of Tom Waits.

Hardy’s

FILM

REVIEW BY BRENDAN CAMPBELL

LEGEND DIRECTED BY: BRIAN HELGELAND STARRING: : TOM HARDY, EMILY BROWNING, CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON, TARON EGERTON, DAVID THEWLIS CERT: 18 - RUNNING TIME: 131 MINS om Hardy is quite rightly riding high at the moment and looks to continue enjoying his moment in the sun for some time yet. Having established himself as a capable and versatile leading man who can handle the physical theatrics of high octane action such as Mad Max: Fury Road as well as the confined, low-key drama of a film like Locke, we’ve yet to see Hardy out of his depth or in a role he doesn’t confidently take in his stride.

And so it is here. nfortunately, though, even Hardy s e cellent and captivating duel performance as both Ronnie and Reggie ray can t elevate this by-thenumbers retro gangster flick above the mediocre.

performance is too big for the flimsy and underpowered script attempting to contain it

Sound & ision

For the past six years, Harpeth Rising has challenged the boundaries of folk music and created a sound that is both excitingly unique, yet surprisingly familiar. Their virtuosic instrumentals of banjo and violin mixed with cello and foot percussion, create an exciting blend of musical genres that include folk, rock, bluegrass, and roots music. Their original lyrics, conveyed through powerful three-part vocals, are both gritty and poignant. he all-female group met while studying classical music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and were united by their eclectic musical interests. Harpeth Rising began touring in 2010, performances including the Cambridge Folk Festival, Fylde Folk Festival, Purbeck Folk Festival, Frome Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, Blissfest, Woodsongs OldTime Radio Hour, The Bluebird, and The Green Note. The trio recently relocated to Louisville, KY to be closer to their southern Indiana roots and join the eclectic musical and cultural landscape of the region.

One of the most engaging and dynamic new groups in folk music today. www.harpethrising.com

Nicki Allen Launches ‘For Life’ a Song of Hope Award winning jazz vocalist Nicki Allan launched her new charity single, ‘For Life’, at the Chapel Allerton Arts Festival in September. icki wrote the song after attending the funeral of Nick Laycock, a friend from her music student days in Leeds, who passed away five years ago after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. n returning from Nick s funeral felt compelled to compose a piece of music in his memory , said Nicki. The melody was easy but could only think of a few lines here and there for the words, so assigned the task to another friend, ohanne Levy, who was going through breast cancer at the time. She wrote the lyrics, but it was another four years before the song was recorded.

All the money raised through downloads of ‘For Life’ will go to Yorkshire Cancer Research
