DEAR READERS,

Despite bad news all around the world, the longer, brighter days of Spring will hopefully infuse everyone with optimism and help us turn the tide. Cllr Judith Blake was certainly full of optimism and determination when we dropped in on her at Leeds Civic Hall. There’s more optimism from North Leeds Community Trust, a group of self-builders hoping to develop a small housing project; Headingley Neighbourhood Plan is progressing nicely; Scarecrows are coming out of the woodwork in Far Headingley and Cookridge; and GP Gary Bartlett suddenly finds himself part of the GB Snowboarding team!

Plus, it seems the whole world is running for charity; Chapel FM launches its first LitFest; and singer/songwriter Rupert Stroud hosts a gig at The Wardrobe in aid of Alzeiheimer’s Research UK. And now, believe it or not, we are looking towards May! Send us all your news and notices by 1st April (advertising 8th April). We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards, Carole, Jack and the team.

here are several good examples of community housing projects in Leeds. For example, the ‘Gledhow Bank’ eco-housing scheme in Chapel Allerton, which was designed by local architect Jonathan Lindh, who still lives there. This is a development of three houses built in a single terrace by the individual owners. The timber frame construction is based on the Walter Segal philosophy, using materials with low embodied energy and high energy efficiency through the highest affordable levels of insulation and efficient heating methods. It won the Leeds Award for Architecture in 1998. With the recent government legislation on Self Build (Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015), there is now a real opportunity in Leeds to build your own home. Leeds City Council has been pro-active in developing a ‘Self Build’ programme and has held events for prospective self-builders. North Leeds Community Trust’s vision is to build individually designed houses that are highly energy efficient and environmentally friendly. They aspire to developing the same sense of community as the Lancaster co-housing scheme and the ‘LILAC’ co-housing project in Bramley.

This has been achieved through common public spaces – a community garden and allotment, shared laundry facilities, and a community building for meeting up with neighbours. They also have car clubs to reduce the number of cars and all parking is restricted to the periphery. This results in a more relaxed way of living, where children can play safely outdoors. The group is currently looking for some land in the North Leeds area and would like to inspire others to think about different ways of living. HUMPHREY BELLAMY BOYLE (1794-1864)

FREETHINKER AND ACTIVIST – THE ‘MAN WITHOUT A NAME’

In 1822, when revolution was in the air everywhere and a nervous Government had clamped down on the freedom of the press, a young ‘man with name unknown’ was tried and imprisoned in London for publishing seditious and blasphemous literature – pamphlets based on Thomas Paine’s ‘Rights of Man’. his unnamed man was Humphrey Boyle from Leeds, a working man, a self-taught free-thinker committed to total political reform and the overthrow of the old systems of thought and religion, by peaceful means. While in gaol he wrote for the underground press, a bold and eloquent spokesman for reform, giving voice to the unrest and anger fermenting in Leeds in the early years of the century. Humphrey Boyle’s family had come to Leeds from Tyneside when he was in his teens. His father James was a flax dresser (preparing the rough fibre for spinning) who moved to Leeds to work in Marshall’s famous mills. Humphrey was the eldest son of nine children, and at 16 he too was apprenticed in the flax trade. He had little formal education but read widely. By his early twenties he had joined the vibrant movement for radical change, demanding universal suffrage and social justice. He was part of a group which met in a yard off Briggate to read some of the subversive journals in circulation and share ideas – freedom of expression was their watchword. Their hero was the London bookseller Richard Carlile, who had been arrested and imprisoned for publishing the story of the shocking Peterloo massacre, and selling pamphlets based on Paine’s writings. They collected subscriptions for him, distributed literature, and arranged meetings, banned by law. In 1821, after the arrest of his wife and sister, Carlile appealed for volunteers to run his bookshop, and Humphrey Boyle was the first Leeds man to respond. He must have known the risk. He was given £1 to help him make his way to London, to Carlile’s bookshop in Fleet Street. He was soon arrested. Every effort had been made to hide helpers’ identities, so he was indicted without being named. The story of his trial and his powerful speech in

his defence was later published. Although ‘but a humble mechanic’ he spoke fluently and forcefully against established religion, against the corrupt political system, and for freedom of expression, reason, justice, and respect for human rights. The trial had its drama: to illustrate the hypocrisy of the accusation of blasphemy, he insisted on reading out ‘indecent’ verses from the bible, and all the women and children had to leave the court. His eloquence was useless; the verdict was ‘guilty’. He was in prison for almost two years, but continued to write and publish. Donations had to be begged to secure his freedom. On his release he agreed to manage the shop while Carlile was still in prison. He returned to Leeds in 1824, to a job in Marshall’s mills as a flax dresser. His special qualities were recognised: he was promoted to overseer, responsible for innovation and development. In 1826 he married Ann Pearson from Leeds, who shared his views and supported him in his continuing political

activities. He was involved in various groups working for reform, for the extension of the vote, social equality, the abolition of slavery. Although still a controversial figure notorious for his ‘atheistical’ views, he represented and spoke for working men in the Leeds Political Union, an active pressure group for the new Reform Bill. Ever concerned with social issues, in 1832 he researched in detail the minimum weekly living costs of a worker’s family with three children, information which has proved valuable for historians, anticipating the modern concept of a ‘living wage’. He and Ann lived in Meadow Lane, and brought up a family of four children. It was a modest enough existence – no servants even when he was making more money. About 1836 he left Marshall’s and moved into the flax trade himself with business partners, based in a nearby mill. By 1853 his son James had joined the business (Boyle & Son) which moved into trading in yarns and other products. Humphrey died in 1864 at home in Meadow Lane, aged 70. His son and widow - evidently an enterprising woman – continued to develop the business. Later family members took over and by continually adapting to new markets, products and trading conditions, the firm has survived, under a new name now (Zoffany), but still with family connections. Humphrey Boyle left an enduring legacy of innovation and enterprise, but he is remembered particularly for his brave and passionate defence of everyone’s right to free speech, truth and justice.

Design agency BML Creative recently donated £1,035.86 to homeless charity, St George’s Crypt. The money was raised through BML’s Charity Print Shop (www.bml-creative.co.uk/shop) – a unique collection of prints created by BML designers as part of the agency’s internal ‘Wall o’Fame’ challenges.

“The Wall o’Fame started out as a bit of fun”, said David Holloway, BML Creative Director, “a chance for the team to design something free of the usual commercial shackles. The idea was to pick a different topic every three months that our designers would respond to in their spare time. Submissions from the team were brilliant! But, what were we going do with them? “We all felt there was an opportunity to do something really positive. That’s when we decided to launch the BML Charity Print Shop – an online store where all profits are donated to local worthwhile causes.”

We all felt there was an opportunity to do something really positive

Print topics are as diverse as the 2014 Grand Depart and the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland. They are printed to order by a fine art specialist in Harrogate and are available in a range of sizes from A4 to A1. The team chose to support St George’s Crypt as their first beneficiary. “When we were choosing a charity last year, it was in the depths of Winter”, said designer James Lodge. “We couldn’t imagine how anybody could cope living on the streets in such terrible weather. The work that St George’s Crypt does is truly inspiring and it’s great to be able to offer them this small token of support.” BML are currently selecting a new charity to support and hope to raise even more money for worthy causes through their design work. “We’re over the moon at the success it has had so far”, said David. “We’ve had orders from all over the UK and even one from the USA!”

his year BMF, the fires, kitchens and bathrooms specialist on Meanwood Road, celebrates its tenth year since opening its first showroom. It now supplies and installs top quality bathrooms, kitchens, fires and stoves across the country from its Leeds base.

Pictured: Ben & Paul Freeman

Co-owner, Paul Freeman, answered some questions for us... Why did you open your first showroom back in 2006? We were installing bathrooms, stoves and fireplaces and were tired of working with poor quality, inferior products! We were struggling to recommend where customers should go to get the best items for their home. So, we thought we might as well do it ourselves, and open our own showroom. That way we could be confident we were only working with the best, and that customers weren’t going to be anything but delighted with their home renovations.

When did you move to Meanwood Road? We moved to our current showroom in May 2014. We’d previously been based in Moortown, but we needed more space. We wanted to showcase more fantastic products, from some of the world’s top designers such as Hansgrohe, Stuv, Rais, Planika, Chesneys, Toto, Contura, Harrie Leenders, Dornbracht, Laufen, Kaldewei and Ben de Lisi. We also wanted to start selling and installing our own kitchens, which the new showroom has allowed us to do.

What might people be surprised to learn about BMF? People often don’t realise that we don’t just sell and install individual products, we can tackle projects from start to finish when it comes to home renovations. We can manage

your entire bathroom, kitchen, fireplace, stove or heating project from design, right through to installation. Our team can manage every element of work that you are likely to need, and is made up only of experienced, skilled professionals. We don’t believe in one size fits all – we hire specialists to ensure the highest quality of work. Products and workmanship are fully guaranteed. People are also often surprised to learn that we’re a family business run by three siblings. It’s great because we know each other inside out and can be completely honest!

What’s next for BMF? We’ve started offering 4D design, which is very new, especially in the area of bathroom and kitchen design. The customer wears a headset so they can experience what it would be like to be in their newly designed room. Realistic depth, scale and products allow homeowners to get a much better feel for how it would look and operate than a 2D drawing and there is also interaction with moving elements of the room, such as cupboards, drawers and showers. It’s a fantastic design tool. BMF’s showroom is at 248 Meanwood Road, Leeds, LS7 2HZ. For more information visit www.bmfonline.co.uk or call 0113 266 0096.

During recent severe weather St George’s Crypt took in 48 people

When Confer ence and Banqueting Manager, Sharon Burrows, delivered the money to the Crypt, she learnt that during severe weather the week before when temperatures dropped below -6, St George’s Crypt took in 48 people, they slept in every conceivable bit of space including the TV room and reception. All 48 were given a warm bed and a meal that night, but this wouldn’t have been possible without the help and donations the Crypt receives. RAI is proud to support St George’s Crypt in providing food, shelter and training to the homeless. The money was raised through staff socials and raffles.

iverdance, now in its 21st year and still touring, comes to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 19th – Friday 22nd April. Originally, Riverdance was created by Michael Flatley and Jean Butler as an interval feature during the 1994 EuroVision Song Contest in Dublin. No one had thought beyond that. It brought the house down. All over the world people were on their feet. There was such a demand for more that in record time they built on what they had and developed an entire show. Today, 21 years later, it is still touring! “It took off like a rocket!” said Julian Erskine, Executive Producer, who has been with Riverdance since the very beginning. “There was no grand plan for world domination. It is amazing that even 21 years on, I still look forward to seeing it. It gives me a buzz and always sends people out of

Art & Culture

the theatre with a great smile on their face.” Riverdance companies are currently touring the UK and The States, and later this year will undertake their eighth tour of China. Although much of the show remains the same as on the opening night, new numbers and new music are regularly introduced and the dancers are constantly changing. “Today, the core dancers are Irish and British”, said Julian. “But dancers join us from all over the world – America, Russia, Spain, all over. They usually stay about three or four years, sometimes before they go on to continue their studies. The turnover helps to keep the whole show fresh. This year we have our main Irish male dancer teaming up with a Flamenco dancer and a percussionist in a stunning piece, and there’s a wonderful ‘a cappella’ number from the girls.”

Riverdance transformed Irish dance. Before it there were no professional Irish dancers. Irish dancing was kept alive solely through competition. But, Julian is convinced that it is this competitive attitude that has made the show so compelling. The dancers are continually competing against each other, so the standard is consistently superb. Composed by Bill Whelan, produced by Moya Doherty and directed by John McColgan, Riverdance has been experienced by over 2.9 million people in the UK. This is a chance for Leeds fans old and new to celebrate a milestone for an incredible show.

The ‘Moments’ exhibition at The Bowery in Headingley, which runs until 13th May, features three artists – Rachel Johns, Elizabeth Nast, and Helen Dryden – capturing moments as they see them.

Elizabeth is fascinated by the ordinary – people shopping, passengers waiting for a bus or a dog left out in the cold. In this exhibition she celebrates these snapshots in time, asking the viewer to stop and think about how the small things in life can be interesting. www.elizabethnast.com Inspired by video footage and photos found online of women, youth, and alternative music culture in the 80s and 90s, Helen’s expressive, painterly marks are used to create contrasting atmospheres. Some works evoke the euphoric psychedelia of a sweaty crowd at a rave or club; others convey the intimacy of bedrooms. http:// helendryden.com

To coincide with the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, Red Ladder Theatre, The Carriageworks, and Leeds Civic Arts Guild will present ‘Leeds Lads’, a brand new community play, from Friday 17th – Saturday 25th June. The play will follow a young woman’s journey into Leeds’ secret past and transport audiences from the turmoil and tensions of war, to the rich, multicultural city we know today.

‘Leeds Lads’, written by Antony Clavane and Nick Stimson, the writers behind ‘Promised Land’, is about the people of Leeds, past and present – their fears, loves and friendships, and performed by the people of Leeds. Selected through open audition, the community cast of around 40 actors and musicians will have the opportunity to perform and learn about professional theatre under the direction of Red Ladder’s artistic director, Rod Dixon. One of the cast will be Leeds Rhino’s Rugby League legend Jamie Jones-Buchanan, who makes his stage debut. Amongst the Leeds Pals who fought and died at the Battle of Somme were members of the Leeds Rugby League Club and Buchanan, a trustee of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, believes that the project is a fitting tribute to the former players and fellow Leeds Pals. For these lads, going to war wasn’t so much to fight for the cause, it was to support each other, to have each other’s back. Auditions took place mid March and rehearsals start 10th April. The play will be at The Carriageworks from 17th – 25th June. For tickets, contact 0113 376 0318 or carriageworkstheatre.org.uk. For more details on the play, visit www.redladder.co.uk

RSC’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play For The Nation The Royal Shakespeare Company brings ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation’ to The Alhambra in Bradford from Tuesday 12th – Saturday 16th April. irected by RSC Deputy Artistic Director, Erica Whyman, the play brings together RSC actors, amateur actors from West Yorkshire, and local school children. Eighteen professional actors will be joined by Leeds Arts Centre (LAC) actors as the Mechanicals and the Samuel Lister Academy’s children will form part of Titania’s fairy train. A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation is a co-production between the Royal Shakespeare Company and amateur theatre companies across the UK. Members of the RSC Education and creative teams will visit Samuel Lister Academy to rehearse with the children, who will be able to create their own special fairy worlds, learn a song and dance routine, and explore the lines of text that they will perform in the show. “This anniversary year is about celebrating the legacy of our national poet, and the best way to do that is by opening Shakespeare up to everyone”, said Jacqui O’Hanlon, RSC Director of Education. “Our Dream tour and the other initiatives we’re announcing in 2016 will help us to do just that by giving as many children and young people as possible the best introduction to Shakespeare’s work regardless of their background, where they live, or what school they go to.” Some of Shakespeare’s best loved characters, the ‘Mechanicals’, are a loveable bunch of craftsmen and women who put themselves forward to entertain royalty at the end of the play. In Bradford the roles will be played by members of Leeds Arts Centre: Tazmin Bennison, Rachel Brewin, Ed Corbet, Fiona Galloway, Barry Green, Ben Hopwood, and Ken Taylor. Tickets (£13 - £27.50) are available from 01274 432000 or www.bradford-theatres.co.uk

The Impact of World War One on a School Horsforth Village Community Museum Leading a student trip to the battlefields of northern France in the 1980s, history teacher John Davies recognised a name on one of the Reopens graves as a former pupil of Leeds Grammar School.

ieutenant Herbert Cheetham was just 20 years of age when he died trying to help a wounded comrade during the Battle of Passchendaele. Realising that Lt Cheetham was one of hundreds of old boys who had served in World War One, John began to delve deeper into the archives and thirty years later has written a book telling their stories. The publication of ‘A High Ideal: Leeds Grammar School and the Great War’ coincides with the centenary of the war. It records the contributions of 776 old boys and staff members involved in the conflict, including 130 who lost their lives, and explores how the school was affected during and after the war. “With the centenary of World War One I felt there was an obligation to recognise those former pupils who served, and those who lost

their lives”, said John. “It became a labour of love to record their stories and I hope this book will help to keep their memory alive.” Leeds Grammar School is now part of The Grammar School at Leeds following the merger with Leeds Girls’ High School (LGHS) in 2008. A section of the book is dedicated to the contribution of LGHS to the war effort. John Davies taught history and religious studies at LGS from 1976 – 1992, before becoming headmaster at LGS Junior School. In 2006 he moved to Moorlands School as headmaster and, following his retirement, returned to GSAL in 2013 as school archivist. A High Ideal: Leeds Grammar School and the Great War is available from GSAL (£20 paperback / £30 hardback). To order a copy, contact 0113 229 1552 or alumni@ gsal.org.uk

Horsforth Village Museum reopen on Saturday 26th March at 10am, after its Winter recess. New displays include ‘Post War Glitz and Glamour’, featuring items from the museum’s costume collection; a collection of Samuel Ledgard memorabilia, including some beautiful handmade bus models lent by Donald ShawBate; and a shop window full of Horsforth-made Sutcliffe boats on loan from collector Jason Priestley. You will also find a room full of WW1 war panels designed by Mark Saville and covering war events both at home and abroad. And, both children and adults can enjoy the dressing up corner on the upstairs landing. A new book by Beryl Biggins will be launched on the opening day, telling the story of the Ida hospital and its ground breaking treatment in rehabilitating stroke victims. The museum is open on Saturdays (10am – 4pm), and Sundays (2 – 5pm/4pm in Nov). The Museum is run entirely by volunteers and they are always looking for new helpers. Adel & Wharfedale Ward Grounds Maintenance for 2016

I have received a briefing note regarding the arrangements and schedules for works in the Streetscene grounds maintenance contracts 2016. This work includes grass cutting within areas controlled by the Housing Department and highway verges,

Leeds Budget & Primary School Places Last month Leeds City Council held its annual budget meeting. Leeds is the second largest authority in the Country, with a gross spend of £2 billion, including capital. We have faced a cut of £76 million on revenue from last year - on top of the £250 million already cut. While tough decisions have had to be made, we have tried to protect the most vulnerable in our city.

Key outcomes from the budget meeting include:

PCSO numbers will increase to 220. The Council has worked with the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark BurnsWilliamson, to ensure that policing our streets remains a priority

along with pruning and weeding of planted areas, such as shrub and rose beds. At each of these maintenance visits, litter will be removed by the contractor. The works undertaken within both the grounds maintenance and weed control contracts are seasonal in nature with peak delivery in Spring and early Summer. Weather conditions will have an impact of efficient operation and quality of outcome. Mowing for the coming season started 7th March, and will be undertaken within operational ‘windows’, therefore the cutting days may fluctuate. The scheduled operations consist of Amenity Grass Mowing (grass within housing estates and along roadways), which is 14 cuts per annum; Premium Amenity Grass (areas housing vulnerable residents), which is 28 cuts per year; Primary Network 1 (along

enough primary school places, however we can no longer build or open new local authority schools and have to look at other solutions to ensure there are enough places. We have been lucky with schools such as Brudenell Primary where we have been able to use the Brudenell Centre to enable the expansion of the school. By increasing this provision, we will be providing a vital service for children and families. Brudenell Primary is a fantastic school, and a shining example of multiculturalism in Leeds. I am particularly pleased that we’ve been able to offer ten places for children with Complex Communication Difficulties, including those from the Autistic Spectrum. Education is the cornerstone of our economic success, and the foundation for an engaged society. There is no better route out of poverty, no better way to increase aspiration and social mobility, and no better way to secure prosperity and build the kind of high wage, cutting edge economy we want.

Determined to Deliver for Leeds A first draft of Headingley Neighbourhood Plan has been positively reviewed by AECOM, a consultancy contracted by the government to help with the development of neighbourhood plans.

f I hadn’t already been a fan of our city before I dropped in to see Councillor Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council, I certainly would have been by the time I left! Judith has been an elected member of the Council since 1996 and five of those years were as Deputy Leader. She has served in several departments, including Children and Families, Planning, Education and Leisure. She knows the workings of the Council inside out and is determined in her new role to get Leeds the recognition it deserves as a progressive, vibrant city with so much to offer. ‘Passionate’ is such an overused word, but I believe Judith really is passionate about Leeds and its success on all levels. It was this passion that prompted her to accompany David Cameron to Singapore and Malaysia, and George Osborne to China on trade missions (something she received some criticism for). “I wanted to make sure everyone knew that Leeds was open for business and how can you do that if you’re not there?” she asked. She reels off Leeds recent successes like Le Grand Depart and Tour de Yorkshire, The Rugby World Cup, the World Triathlon Series, the sports facilities at Leeds Beckett, where so many of the UK’s top athletes train, theatre, opera and dance in the city, the outreach and inclusion programmes that thrive on the city’s diversity. Of course, Leeds will definitely be bidding for European City of Culture 2023. There is also the every day business of running a successful city. The Council has seen a reduction in core funding of £180 million since 2010, with savings in excess of £76 million needing to be found in 2016/17.

Needless to say, trying to provide all the necessary services for the city with such reduced budgets is extremely challenging. Services have had to be reduced and sometimes cut. Judith has been particularly upset by the fact that the Council and its staff have often been blamed for these cuts, when it has been the result of Government cuts. She made her frustration plain in December/January when the floods hit Leeds. The Government had shelved a previously agreed flood prevention programme for the city – if this had been carried out as planned it’s unlikely that the flooding would have happened. But Council workers turned out immediately and worked tirelessly alongside local communities to clear up – underlining the feeling of community that there is across the city. One of the reasons I wanted to catch Judith was to acknowledge that she was the first ever female leader of Leeds City Council. I didn’t realise quite how unusual this was – there are 352 local councils around the country but only 51 of their leaders are female. What’s more, among the core cities – Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield – there are only two female leaders, in Sheffield and here in Leeds – which perhaps speaks to the progressive nature of a city determined to be recognised as one of the UK’s greats.

AECOM notes that the Plan’s objectives are “to promote a mixed population, to make Headingley familyfriendly, and to diversify housing provision … to achieve these through evidenced housing policies … [since] providing for ‘a sustainable, inclusive and mixed community in Headingley’ largely depends on the housing needs of all quantifiable demographic groups”. The Plan consists of nine housing policies – one general development “is effectively redundant”, and two others, on affordable housing and purpose built student accommodation, “largely reiterate Leeds Core Strategy policy”, so AECOM recommends that these be deleted. They also recommend that policies on HMOs (houses in multiple occupation) and on small (sub-standard) flats be incorporated into the general policy on short-term accommodation. But this, together with others on housing density, housing mix and independent living are endorsed by AECOM, with recommendations for improving the wording of all. AECOM notes that consultation “was extensive and widely inclusive in its approach to engaging with all stakeholders in the area”. In addition, the Headingley Housing Needs Assessment “is solidly researched and presented. It provides a sound and clear evidence base for the policies in the Neighbourhood Plan”. Founded in 1956 by an enthusiastic group of individuals, early productions were held in the old Cookridge Village Hall, which was replaced in the 1960s. Today CADS usually produces three productions a year, plus play readings and social events over the Summer. The group is marking its diamond jubilee year with the presentation of the panto ‘Aladdin’ (a great success during February half term), and two drama productions – a thriller in early May and a double bill of comedy in late November. Many Cookridge residents have fond memories of their time in CADS pantos - in some cases their first experience of live theatre. The next production, the thriller ‘Suddenly at Home’ by Francis Durbridge, will be at Cookridge Village Hall from 5th – 7th May at 7.30pm. Set in the early 1980s, before mobile phones, e-mail and advanced forensic techniques, it involves the meticulous planning of a murder and the framing of an old love rival. There are many twists and turns before events are brought to a satisfactory but unexpected conclusion. Tickets (£7/£6) are available from 07714 954 275 or on the door.

Council to Increase Community Policing ouncillor Judith Blake, the Leader of Leeds City Council, has announced that the overall number of PCSOs in Leeds will rise. The Council has seen a reduction in core funding of £180 million since 2010, with further savings in excess of £76 million needed in 2016/17. In addition, the Council is aware that the Police and Crime Commissioner has had to deliver savings of £140 million in the last few years. In spite of these reductions, the Council has maintained its support for PCSOs and is set to do so again in this year’s budget. Following positive discussions with Mark BurnsWilliamson, West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, the overall number of PCSOs will increase. “PCSOs provide vital services that are highly valued by our local communities”, said Cllr Blake. “Despite consistent attacks on the police by the national government, and our own financial challenges, PCSOs remain a priority for this council. That is why we are setting out plans to provide an exceptional level of funding for PCSOs in comparison to our regional neighbours – Leeds will again contribute £1m to ensure we have PCSOs in communities right across the city.

Every ward in the city will have a minimum of three PCSOs

“Every ward in the city will have a minimum of three PCSOs. On top of that, in line with our aspirations to deliver targeted support to areas suffering poverty, deprivation and high crime levels, additional PCSOs will be provided by the PCC in response to specific need. “However, we are concerned about reports of changes to the funding formula from 2017/18 that could redistribute funds towards Shire Counties. Just like the additional funding for rural Councils - none of which came to Leeds- this would take money away from cities like Leeds that have tried hard to maintain policing levels. We will look to protect Community Policing where we can, but further reductions from Central Government will make that harder and harder.”

Raising Awareness of Forced Marriage and Honour Abuse he charity Karma Nirvana, founded by Jasvinder Sanghera CBE and based in Headingley, aims to raise awareness of the plight of those forced into a marriage that they do not want, or are subjected to honourbased abuse. Jasvinder herself was forced into an unwanted marriage at the age of 14 and is now a leading campaigner and advocate for those experiencing similar circumstances. Greg Mulholland MP recently visited the charity to find out about its work, which includes the National Honour Network

Helpline, set up by Karma Nirvana to provide confidential listening support and guidance to social care professionals, victims and survivors of honour based abuse. He also heard about the national and regional challenges faced by the organisation.

“Karma Nirvana is helping to bring this issue to the public’s consciousness and in doing so is working towards stamping out this type of abuse”, commented Greg. “Jasvinder is an outspoken campaigner and advocate for survivors.” Greg also met call handlers at the National Honour Network Helpline, which receives 750 calls per month, on average. The service deals not only with clients in West Yorkshire, but also nationally. Unfortunately it is not a seven day service at the moment, so there is currently a gap in provision. Karma Nirvana is seeking funding to expand the Helpline activities. Any donations or support from other organisations would be very welcome. For further information, visit www. karmanirvana.org.uk/

Following last year’s highly successful event, Leeds Modernians will once again host the Cookridge Scarecrow Festival during the May Bank Holiday weekend, 1st and 2nd May. ast year some 45 local residents, organisations and businesses participated, making scarecrows or hosting them in gardens. Exhibits included wonderful depictions of ‘Three Little Pigs’, ‘SpongeBob Square Pants’ and ‘Becher’s Brook’. A number of exhibits were made by the children of Holy Trinity School, and the event was supported by Grace Community Church and Caring for Life. Over the two days, the streets of Cookridge came alive with over 1,000 adults and children eagerly following the Scarecrow Trail, spotting the exhibits and looking for clues before returning to the Leeds Modernians’ Clubhouse on Cookridge Lane for refreshments,

Over 1,000 people eagerly followed the Scarecrow Trail last year including cakes and ale! This year event will be even bigger and better with extra attractions and even more scarecrows. For further information, contact Steve Ewen on 07714 238150 or steve.ewen@brentwoodgroup.co.uk

he curlew is one of the most distinctive birds you are likely to come across in the UK. Of all the wading birds it has the longest beak, which it uses to probe deep into the mud of estuaries for small invertebrates, including worms, shellfish and shrimps. In Winter, curlews can be seen in large numbers off the coast, joining other migratory waders, but in Summer they move to their breeding grounds in moorland areas. Here it is possible to hear their very distinctive cur-loo call, a sound so evocative of these high open spaces.

Like many waders, curlews have streaked and barred grey-brown plumage, which allows them to blend in with their surroundings, but in flight their pointed white rump is clearly visible. The Humber Estuary has some

You will no doubt have noticed the new patches of meadow planting that have appeared throughout the city in recent years. Most are annual meadows that provide a huge surge of colour from early Summer right through to late October, or even beyond if the frosts come late. It’s possible to create the same stunning effects in a patch of your own garden without too much trouble and seeds can be planted right now. Various mixes are available including short varieties for smaller spaces, or a whole range of colour co-ordinated blends with exciting names like ‘Volcanic’ and ‘Sundance’. Select a planting area that is open and sunny and doesn’t get waterlogged, dig it over and remove weeds, then rake to get a fine texture to sprinkle your seeds onto. It is much easier to sow the seed if it is mixed well with sharp sand. You will need two grams of seed for each square metre of meadow.

From short stories, radio drama, poetry, fiction, lyric writing, horror, and script writing, to discussions, open mic, master classes and an all-night Readathon, the Festival offers a range of opportunities for writers of all ages to get involved.

Chapel FM’s inspirational surroundings provide the perfect setting to get creative juices flowing. “I’m involved in at least two programmes”, said writer Hannah Stone. “As a newcomer to radio, I’m thrilled to be learning new ways of presenting my poetry and it’s great to meet other writers.” “Unexpected things always emerge when two or more writers gather in one place!” said fellow writer Barney Bardsley. “I’m looking forward to celebrating our many quirks and creative diversions, in one gorgeous, on-air feast!” Peter Spafford, Director of Words at Chapel FM added: ‘Love The Words’ is our ongoing on-air platform for writers of all ages to try out their work. ‘Writing on Air’ is a chance for our regular contributors to create their own programmes, but it’s

also an open invitation to people to come into this wonderful studio space and do interesting, oddball things. Once they’re here, they won’t want to leave!”

Take part in the Readathon! This will start at around 10.30pm on Saturday 16th April and go through the night. They are reading David Hendy’s book ‘Noise: A Human History of Sound and Listening’. You can volunteer to read for anything from one hour to the entire night! For full details, visit: www.chapelfm.co.uk/ news/writing-on-air/ or contact peter@ headstogether.org. Tickets to be in the studio audience are available from www. chapelfm.eventbrite.co.uk Chapel FM, Old Seacroft Chapel, York Road, LS14 6JB

Schwa is Peter Spafford and Richard Ormrod, and they are launching their new album, ‘Now We Are Schwa’, at HEART, Bennett Road, Headingley on 6th April.

Richard is a multi-instrumentalist and has been called ‘a bit of a Leeds phenomenon’. Peter is a playwright, poet, and songwriter. Both live round the corner from Heart. “Rich and I have been playing together for nearly four years”, said Peter. “People who know us may be familiar with some of the songs, but not as they are presented here. Richard’s arrangements are quirky and lush. In fact, we joke that, in terms of ambition at least, this may be our Pet Sounds moment! As for the subject matter, it’s the usual: desire, death, and the other things that make life what it is.” For this gig, Schwa is joined by Ossett chanteuse Jacqui Wicks. Richard and Peter are already touring ‘Threshold’, their performance piece about hospitality, with Jacqui. ‘Threshold’, which premiered at Cafe Lento during the Litfest last year, comes to Headingley Library on 3rd May. Peter’s new poetry collection, ‘Quick’ will be launched in May.

Rupert Stroud Set to Rock The Wardrobe for ‘A Total Thug Up’ Alzheimer’s Research at Oblong Singer-songwriter Rupert Stroud will perform a special concert at The Wardrobe on Saturday 16th April in aid of Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity. upert’s indie-rock sound oozes heartfelt melodies and sweeping choruses and has attracted a strong following. Last year saw him opening for the likes of Texas and James Blunt. His last, album ‘Chasing the Night’ received critical acclaim, and his ‘Talk to You’ EP, released last spring, reached number 11 in the iTunes singer/songwriter charts, sitting comfortably between Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard. He is currently writing and recording his third album. Rupert’s inspiration for supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK was his grandmother, Eileen Heyes, who died in 2009 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. In 2012, he released a charity single, ‘Always’ as a tribute to her, the proceeds of which also went to the charity, for which he has raised thousands of pounds. “My grandma was such a beautiful and talented woman, but Alzheimer’s slowly stripped away every facet of her”, said Rupert. “It was a very traumatic time for our family as we watched helplessly as she gradually became unrecognizable – we lost the vibrant, happy woman she had once been. “This event is the first in a series of fundraising concerts I’m planning in aid of Alzheimer’s Research. It will be a great night of fun, with comedy comparing, music from me and the band, as well as

I am convinced that with continued research, we will find more effective treatments and ultimately a cure for this dreadful condition.” Tickets to see Rupert at The Wardrobe (£10 - £20) are available from www.rupertstroudmusic.com or www.lunatickets.co.uk. Screenings are held in the hall at Woodhouse Community Centre. On Thursday 7th April (7pm) the film is ‘A Total Thug-Up’. But nothing is that simple add girl-in-trouble Priya, local villain Adam the Scrote, inept thugs Rambo & Anil and you have ... a Total Thug-Up This is a Yorkshire film made by a filmmaking team from the Wakefield area, with little support, much enthusiasm, a lot of skill - and bags of attitude! Writer and producer Terry Baron Turner will be at the screening to introduce the film and for a Q&A afterwards. Admission is free! donations accepted but not required. FILM

REVIEW

HAIL CAESAR DIRECTED BY: : THE COEN BROTHERS STARRING: GEORGE CLOONEY, JOSH BROLIN, SCARLETT JOHANSSON, CHANNING TATUM, TILDA SWINTON

CERT: 12A RUNNING TIME: 106 MINS he Coens are back on familiar ground and astride their hobbyhorse in this bright and breez y comedy caper, a hilarious and affectionate paean to the golden age of Hollywood. Josh Brolin is studio exec Eddie Mannix, a ‘fixer’ who if he can’t quite keep the talent out of trouble at least keeps it out of the papers. Keeping the movie-making machine humming along is business as usual for Mannix but a troublesome spanner is thrown in the works when A-list matinee idol Baird Whitlock (Clooney), star of the earnest but unintentionally hysterical biblical epic of the title, is abducted by a group with Marxist leanings (made up mostly of disgruntled screenwriters) calling themselves ‘The Future’.

The scenes from the films within the film deliver some of the biggest laughs

On top of this, Mannix has to juggle actors between various pictures and deal with a syncronised swimmer’s inconvenient pregnancy, while being headhunted for a position at defense company, Lockheed. Hail Caesar sees the Coens returning to some of their recurrent obsessions; the early 50’s setting is one they’ve visited before and clearly have an affinity for, and the Hollywood insider, behind the scenes action is subject matter the brothers are well versed in and is apt material for their droll, sardonic brand of humour. It could be said that Hail Caesar is the comedic flipside to the nightmarish Barton Fink, their 1991 masterpiece which charts an idealistic playwright’s decent into Tinseltown hell. This is a considerably more upbeat affair and shares its infectious, exuberant energy with the underrated Frank Capra homage, The Hudsucker Proxy. As with most Coen pictures, what shines through is their deep love and extensive knowledge of cinema. Their instinctive appreciation (and subversion) of genre tropes is one of the most notable hallmarks of their career and in this case it’s the scenes from the films within the film that deliver some of the biggest laughs; the

aforementioned, titular Hail Caesar, a delightfully camp, show-stopping song and dance number (No Dames!) from a sailor-comedy-musical, making good use of Channing Tatum’s rug-cutting prowess, and a brilliant scene in which British director, Laurence Laurentz (Ralph Fiennes giving his considerable comedy chops another welcome airing) vainly attempts to wrangle a singing

cowboy star who’s been transplanted from a western into his drawing room farce. The film’s starry cast is largely composed of returning Coen Brothers veterans but due to the flighty nature of the story, most are confined to little more than fleeting cameos with only Brolin’s Mannix who connects the dots, clocking up any substantial screen time.

While I found Hail Caesar amusing and entertaining, I fear due to its frivolous, throwaway air, it might be destined to be considered one of the ‘lesser Coens’, to be filed alongside ‘Intolerable Cruelty’ and ‘The Ladykillers’. The critical reaction has been mixed with some being, I feel, unfairly dismissive claiming it to be too much style over substance. To my mind, the film has much to recommend it. It’s beautifully shot by the Coens’ go-to cinematographer, the incomparable Roger Deakins, it’s warmly nostalgic with lovingly rendered period detail, and features some cracking comic turns from a superb cast and, while it may not rank up there with some of the Coen Brothers’ best, it’s certainly deserving of a viewing.

Leeds Midnight Walk Celebrates Tenth Year! n Saturday 18th June, hundreds of St Gemma’s Hospice supporters, will take on the seven or ten mile sponsored walk around the streets of Leeds for the tenth year. Previously a women-only walk, this year St Gemma’s is also inviting men to take part and help to raise £100,000 for the hospice. Setting off from Xercise 4 Less Gym in Kirkstall at 10pm, the route takes walkers past Kirkstall Abbey, into Horsforth and onto West Park, with a break for refreshments at the half way point. “Seeing hundreds of people walking in support of the Hospice is brilliant”,

said Becky Hole, event organiser. “We are so grateful for the support of the local community – without them, we couldn’t keep doing what we do. Since the event began we have raised over £752,431 for St Gemma’s. To celebrate the tenth anniversary, we want to really

brighten up the streets, so all T-shirts will be in bright neon colours. We would love to have 1,000 walkers in this anniversary year!” “The Leeds Midnight Walk combines having tremendous fun along with fundraising for St Gemma’s”, said Raman Sankaran from Simplyhealth. “We’re proud to sponsor the event for a third year and hope it will raise lots of money for a fantastic cause.” Registration is just £20. Spruce Up Your Car for Spring fter a particularly mild, wet and windy Winter, saltgritted motorways and pothole ridden roads have taken their toll on many of our cars, leaving numerous unfortunate drivers suffering from paintwork damage. As Spring has arrived, now is the perfect time to spruce up your car and repair any damage that may have occurred. “Many motorists will think that their cars won’t have sustained as much damage as in snowy, icy conditions”, said Peter Howarth, Chips Away North Leeds. “But if there are any scratches on your car’s bodywork, they’re far more susceptible to rust. More people are out washing their cars and noticing damage to their paintwork. It definitely pays to get any minor paintwork damage repaired as quickly as possible – to make sure it doesn’t lead to a more extensive and therefore expensive repair.”

Using a service like ChipsAway to repair minor damage can save you substantial amounts of money as you won’t have to pay

to have the whole panel re-sprayed. ChipsAway, the UK’s leading minor car body repair specialist, provides a cost-effective and convenient service. Professional repairs carried out using the ChipsAway system help preserve the integrity of the car’s original paintwork and therefore its value. Operating from a fully equipped mobile workshop or Car Care Centre, specialists can quickly repair everyday wear and tear to paintwork such as scratches, bumper scuffs and kerbed alloy wheels. ‘Doc’ Bartlett Joins GB Snowboarding Team As portfolio careers go, GP and prosnowboarder is hardly the most obvious combo. But such is the unlikely path Dr Gary Bartlett has found himself following.

It was with shock and disbelief that he found himself being invited to join the team

aving graduated from Leeds University, and just completed his GP training, Gary who lives in Meanwood, was offered an opportunity to try out for the GB snowboarding team. Having been a keen snowboarder from an early age, he already had a good deal of experience under his belt. He started taking it more seriously five or six years ago - participating in amateur boarder-cross events and hitting the snowdome at every opportunity. But he was a little nervous at having to distinguish himself among some international snowboarding talent. Gary’s specialty, snowboarding cross or boarder-cross, is a high speed, downhill race event incorporating jumps and obstacles. It’s difficult for those who are into it in the UK as few places have those kind of runs set up. From time to time snowdomes will put together a boarder-cross run, so Gary vigilantly kept an eye out for opportunities to practice. That’s how he found out about the Team GB try out. His primary motivation was to up his game through meeting with top coaches and other boarders. He certainly wasn’t expecting to be selected. So, it was with shock and disbelief that he found himself being asked to stay behind after the event and invited to join the team. He now trains alongside Olympic champion Zoe Gillings-Brier. “I remember watching the Winter Olympics in 2014 and seeing Zoe in the snowboard cross events and thinking, how amazing she was and her technical

skill was so spot on”, said Gary. “She became a real role model for me and still is. Now, two years later, I’m on the same team and competing for Great Britain!” Gary (AKA ‘Doc’!) and the rest of team GBSBX (Great Britain Snowboarding Cross) are now looking forward to various European competitions with an eye to competing in the Snowboarding World Cup. The main thing Gary says he’s taken from this experience is that if you persevere and chase your dream hard

enough you can find yourself living it. In order to continue pursuing his snowboarding career and representing his country Gary is seeking sponsorship from companies large and small, either connected with the ski and snowboard industry (like Glide & Slide in Otley who are supporting him) or in other fields. To be part of a great UK sporting success story contact him via Facebook: (Gary ‘Doc’ Bartlett - British Snowboard Cross GB Athlete) or https://wakelet. com/@garybartlettgbsbx

Shayan Wins ‘Best at Sport’ in British Muslim Awards Shayan Siraj, junior table tennis ace from Bramhope, recently added another trophy to his collection without having to lift a bat when he was named Best at Sport at the British Muslim Awards 2016.

Schools Encouraged to Enter School Council Awards Greg Mulholland MP is encouraging local schools to enter for the Speaker’s School Council Awards. These awards are run by the Parliamentary Education Service and celebrate the achievements of school councils around the UK that are bringing about positive change in their school or community.

he shortlist in this category was drawn from across the country and included two Yorkshire boxers, a badminton player, footballer, Thai kick boxer and a racing driver. Shayan was the youngest award winner in 22 categories at the ceremony, held in Birmingham. Now in their fourth year, the British Muslim Awards are presented by Al Rayan Bank in recognition of a wide range of achievements in business, charity, sport, art and culture, reflecting the breadth of contribution by British Muslims. Shayan has been playing table tennis since the age of seven

and began representing Yorkshire while still at junior school. At 12, he represented England in an international competition, and last year became a national champion twice in one day, taking both the singles and doubles titles at the U-11 – U-14 Table Tennis England national championships. This season, he has already helped the Yorkshire cadet team retain the UK National County Table Tennis Championship for the third year running. Shayan is in Year 10 at The Grammar School at Leeds.

The Awards are open to all schools, from infant to sixth form, and including Special Education Needs (SEN) across the UK. Winning projects are chosen in four age categories (4-7, 8-11, 11-16, 17-19) and the winners will be invited to a prize giving ceremony in the Houses of Parliament. This year, the Speaker’s School Council Awards are also asking schools to send in blog pieces, ‘top tips’ and images for their website, illustrating the great contribution school councils make to schools and communities, and what can be achieved when young people work together. Entry forms can be submitted until 16th May. Visit www. speakersschoolcouncil.org for inspiration and guidance on how to enter the competition.

Mysterious, Funny & Quite Mad! A Trio of Plays from Ted Hughes he West Yorkshire Playhouse is showing a trio of rare stories from former poet laureate Ted Hughes this April – stories with familiar elements, told from deliciously unexpected angles! What is that strange laughter coming from the woods? Where did that mysterious new star come from? And what happens when you make a tribe of savages very, very angry? In ‘The Coming of the Kings’ a greedy innkeeper takes centre stage in an original take on the nativity; ‘Sean, the Fool, the Devil and the Cats’ is a cautionary tale about eating the wrong person’s stew; and ‘The Tiger’s Bones’ tells of an expedition into the wild which hints at the foolishness of modern man.

by Ted Hughes

“Stumbling across these rarely performed children’s plays by Ted Hughes was like metal detecting treasure on a beach”, said director Jack McNamara. “They were everything I wanted children’s theatre to be: beautiful, mysterious, funny and quite mad. They also have a deeply moral centre. Ted Hughes understands the intelligence of young audiences and offers them sophisticated themes usually reserved for adults, but with real lightness and invention.”

Performed by an energetic ensemble of actors blending comedy, drama, poetry and music, ‘The Tiger’s Bones’ is a timeless world of folklore and fable, mystery and mayhem. Ted Hughes had a lifelong passion for nurturing creativity in the young and this dazzling and brilliant collection of short plays for children from age seven and their families, follows in the footsteps of ‘How the Whale Became’ and ‘The Iron Man’. This trio of plays runs from Thursday 7th – Saturday 9th April, 2pm and 7pm daily, in the Courtyard Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse. Tickets (£12.50) are available from 0113 213 7700 or online at www.wyp. org.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
