DEAR READERS,
I feel a sustained period of sunshine would definitely lift everyone’s mood! A huge referendum cloud is sitting over the country, but hopefully this is about to lift and we can return to some semblance of normality. This month we flag up the rejection of the trolleybus. Thanks are definitely due to the North West Leeds Transport Forum and A660 Joint Council whose dedication and expertise tirelessly pointed out the drawbacks of the scheme. Hopefully we can now look forward to a new transport system that is fit for purpose and our dynamic city. We also print an article on TTIP – the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership – that people know so little about as all negotiations appear to be taking place in secret. It throws up many very worrying scenarios.

Obituary for a Trolleybus Thursday the 12th May 2016 marked the publication of a 903 page Public Inquiry report which comprehensively rejected the NGT/ trolleybus scheme. The trolleybus, a cut-down version of Supertram, is dead. Long may it rest in peace, just like the old tram tracks buried beneath the tarmac of Otley road. he 72 day inquiry, driven by strong opposition by local residents from both the north and south of Leeds, dramatically and comprehensively exposed the shortcomings of the scheme. It highlighted the inadequacies in both planning and justification. NGT could not withstand close scrutiny by informed and civic-minded Leeds residents. Objectors never asserted that the A660 or Leeds did not need transport investment, only that NGT as planned gave neither value nor improvement either for the A660 or Leeds as a whole. Even prior to the report’s publication, the work of the North West Leeds Transport Forum, a consortium of a number of local residents’ associations, had come up with viable alternatives encompassing both the A660 and Leeds as a whole. These have been shared with highways and transport officers, councillors and MPs. The one glimmer of hope in the whole lengthy saga of super tram and then trolley bus, is that the Government has ring fenced the £173 million for Leeds transport. This, together with the NGT rejection, led to a Transport Summit being planned to develop transport solutions for the city. As a starting point, the ‘Alternatives’ document offers, amongst other things, suggestions for improving transport on the A660 at relatively modest costs and surely it would be perverse if the Council now chose to ignore transport issues on the A660. In addition, local residents and residents’ associations can offer much

HENRY ROWLAND MARSDEN (1823- 1876) INDUSTRIALIST, INVENTOR, PHILANTHROPIST – ‘THE POOR MAN’S FRIEND’
On a corner of the untended side of Woodhouse Moor a tall statue stands among the long grass and litter. It commemorates a forgotten popular hero, Henry Rowland Marsden, twice Mayor of Leeds, universally loved for his generosity and kindness, admired for his energy and self-made success. Thirty thousand Leeds people contributed to the statue. When it was unveiled in 1878 in Woodhouse Lane, close to town, great crowds of eager fans broke through the police barriers and swamped the celebrations. Now its once white marble is dirty and pitted, its pink granite base stained by graffiti, and one of its three carved panels hacked out. enry Marsden’s life was a classic rags to riches story. He was born in 1823 in a small back-to-back on Edwin Street, Holbeck (gone now). His father was an ex-soldier, a Waterloo veteran, on a miserably small pension. His mother took in washing to help feed the family, and as soon as their two boys were old enough they had to earn. Henry got his first job aged seven and over the following years worked in various mills, including as a ‘heckler’ in Marshall’s flax mill – dirty, ill-paid work.’ His only schooling was at the Sweet Street Wesleyan Sunday School. He learnt to read when he was 12, and taught himself the elements of mechanics and engineering. At 15 he found an opening as apprentice to a tool maker, where he had scope to develop his skills and inventive imagination. But the pay was poor, and when he invented a machine for use in flax-spinning his employer took the credit and the profits. Even when Henry wanted to marry he was refused a pay rise, so he left, but was persuaded back and stayed until the firm closed. Then his thoughts turned to the New World, the land of opportunity. He had borrowed some money and married – Sarah Hawling, a butcher’s daughter. With their baby daughter they embarked in 1848 on the great adventure of the long transatlantic voyage. After a period in New York they settled in Connecticut where he joined a firm (Blake’s) which had launched new stone-crushing machinery – the start of his journey to success and fortune. He developed improvements to the Blake machines and later patented his inventions. In 1862 he returned to Leeds to set up in business at the Soho Works in Meadow Lane, manufacturing stone and orecrushing machinery, winning international
recognition. As industrialisation boomed, his patented machines were in demand across the world for road building, mining, and railway construction, replacing slow, back breaking manual labour. (The Blake/ Marsden names are still in use today.) He was now a very wealthy man and the family lived in some style, first in Wortley Grange, then De Grey Terrace, and finally in a grand detached mansion called Avenue House in Woodhouse Lane (not there now). But his wealth could not protect them from
tragedy: in 1865 newly-born twin babies and an older son died within months of each other. Henry never forgot the poverty of his youth, donating large sums to charities for the poor, and helping many individuals in need. He would sit in a small office every day, handing out bread and shoes to anyone down on their luck. His reputation for benevolence and kindness spread. He was elected as a Liberal councillor, and in 1873 and 1874 as mayor, hugely popular not only for his cheerful generosity but also for his ‘wondrous rise from poverty and obscurity’. As mayor he initiated the ambitious project to hold triennial Music Festivals, and he celebrated the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s marriage by organising a tea for 1,000 elderly citizens at the Town Hall – a grand gesture imitated by his successors. In 1876, when he was about to be presented with a splendid testimonial to his time as mayor, came the shocking news of his sudden death, aged 53. His funeral was a massive affair. He was buried in the elaborate family vault in Holbeck cemetery. A fund was immediately set up for a memorial statue by the Leeds sculptor John Throp, and contributions poured in. A prominent site in Woodhouse Lane was chosen and there his statue stood for 72 years until road widening banished it to storage and in 1952 to the Moor. The panels on its base represented education, industry, and benevolence – all three dear to him.

TTIP – What Does it Mean? Since 2013, secret talks have been taking place every two months to secure the world’s biggest ever trade deal. nown as ‘TTIP’, the EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is touted as a ‘free trade’ deal. But in reality its agenda goes far beyond removing the import taxes known as ‘tariffs’, which are already extremely low in EU-US trade. TTIP, negotiated by the European Commission for all 28 EU Member States, seeks to reach ‘behind the border’ to remove the social, health and environmental protections which for many companies are simply ‘barriers to trade’. Whether rules on the use of growth hormones in food, limits on the size of banks, or rules to stop the use of dirty fuels like tar sands oil – all have been targeted for removal, with some already falling away under pressure from big business and governments. And, as has been the pattern with trade deals since the 1980s, TTIP seeks to lock in the privatisation of public services, including the NHS. Worse still, it seeks to introduce a new power for US big business, which will be able to access a private justice ‘corporate court’ system known as investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) to sue European governments for lost profits or any attempts to renationalise public services. But there is good news: TTIP is so bad in so many ways that it’s triggered the most vibrant pan-European social movement seen in a generation. And with 3.5 million signatures on a European anti-TTIP petition and recent demonstrations across Europe combining with leaks of negotiating texts, governments are keen to show that they are not fully sold on the deal. The bad news is that while TTIP is in trouble, it isn’t dead yet. And the
TTIP seeks to lock in the privatisation of public services, including the NHS
British Government and the European Commission will harness all their spinning skills to save the deal. From the outset, we have been fed falsehoods on TTIP. Growth, jobs and high standards have been the mantra from day one. Yet, on every one of these measures TTIP falls short. According to its official report, TTIP will lead to a 0.5% GDP increase by 2027. Ken Clarke has called the figures “not
credible”, German economy minister Sigmar Gabriel says they are “wondrous calculations” drawn from “voodoo economics”. On jobs, the picture is even clearer: the official study highlights that we can expect to lose one million jobs in the EU. And, to date, there is no plan to mitigate these impacts. As for standards, the claimed growth figures are based on removing
more than half of our social, health and environmental protections. For those of us who have followed TTIP from the outset, none of this is a surprise. TTIP has always been fundamentally by and for big business: freedom of information requests have revealed that before TTIP was even announced the European Commission held 119 secret meetings with big business: corporations had the whip hand in deciding TTIP’s content. It’s because of this that the horrors of ISDS corporate courts have been brought into TTIP. It is through ISDS that Slovakia has been sued for renationalising its healthcare. It is how Australia and Uruguay have faced protracted and costly legal battles for daring to bring in laws on cigarette packaging. And it is why Canada has faced repeated litigation for everything from passing moratoriums against fracking to revoking patents for drugs with unproven benefits. British politicians may tell you that
we are not threatened by ISDS. They are wrong. We have never had a trade deal with a country with as much money invested in the UK as America. And that’s precisely why a study commissioned by the UK government found that TTIP’s corporate courts bring only dangers and no benefits and would see the UK face a similar situation to Canada – the most sued country in the Northern hemisphere, having faced 35 ISDS cases to date. The US and EU want to conclude talks on TTIP in 2016. But it can’t be ratified without votes in the European Parliament and likely every EU member state. For many readers, the
results of the EU referendum will be known by the time you read this. If we have voted to leave the EU, we will no longer be a part of TTIP as we now know it. But if we want to trade with the EU, it will be - as intended for all countries outside the USA and EU - on the terms set out by TTIP. And our own government, which has been arguably the biggest rightwing pull on TTIP in Europe, will set about negotiating trade deals on the exact model of TTIP. Whether we are in or out of the EU, the fight against trade deals that threaten our democracy, human rights and the environment must continue. As you know, we are huge fans of all things vintage – anything beautiful with a history and provenance. Such items aren’t found in retail parks, shopping malls or high street shops. ‘Discovered items’ can only be found by mooching around vintage emporia, scavenging in car boots, pootling around charity shops, or Ebay. ust imagine that moment whilst mooching, scavenging or pootling when you just happen upon something you’ve been craving for years, or you had no idea you craved until the very moment you clap your beady eyes on it. Somewhat akin to that India Jones moment in the Temple of Doom where, after a perilous journey through some Aztec temple, he eventually spies the ancient artefact he seeks, resplendent on a plinth and illuminated by a ray of divine light. Vintage shoppers will undoubtedly recognise this experience. You clap your eyes on the item, and there is a moment of sheer disbelief which gives way to a heady combination of heartstopping joy, complete amazement and then blind terror that someone will get to it before you do.

For some it could be a 60’s two-tone mod dress, for others an immaculate Matchbox car in amongst a box of odds and ends marked 50p under the seller’s table at a boot fair. A friend of mine goes ga-ga for Marvel superhero figurines that he displays on an unreasonably high shelf in his study. Recently I had such a moment in Pont Aven, Brittany. I have a thing for mid-century original art (amongst many other things) and clapped my eyes on a painting through a closed gallery window. Okay, there was no divine light, no chorus of angels, and no natives firing poisoned darts, but I swear I thought I heard the portrait whisper ‘I have been waiting for you’ as I pressed my nose up against the window. I didn’t quite camp outside the gallery for four hours that day, let’s just say it never left my sight and I was rewarded for dedication. But then, and I’m sure for many valid reasons, they hesitate, prevaricate and walk on by, only to return a few days later to find that sadly the item has been sold. Preservative Party Curates First World War Exhibition he Preservative Party, a group of young history enthusiasts (aged 14 – 24), has curated a special exhibition at Leeds City Museum to pay special tribute to those who were lost, as well as those who survived The First World War. Launching on 1st July, the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, and running until 8th January 2017, the exhibition, ‘In Their Footsteps’, will showcase the War’s impact on local civilians, soldiers, nurses and industrial workers. It will reveal the variety of communication methods, as well as fascinating finds, including a dolls’ house made by recuperating soldiers. With the help of West Yorkshire Archive Service and York Army Museum,
the Preservative Party has knitted together individual stories and collated a fascinating collection of items. “It’s such a privilege to be able to work with these unique museum collections that constitute a vital part of our city’s history”, said Eleanor Smith of the Preservative Party. “We’re really excited to get the exhibition up and running and look forward to encouraging other young people to get involved when we open in July.” Ruth Leach, Curator of Leeds City Museum commented: “It’s refreshing to see such a young team of historians with a keen interest in the First World War, and we hope the exhibition will resonate with other young people as it’s so focused on individuals from their home towns. There
are some exciting items going on display, which draw on the nationally important Leeds Museums and Galleries collection.” Throughout the exhibition the museum will host a number of talks and tours, including War Horse Tales, Stories From Overseas Soldiers, as part of Black History Month, and poetry and performance activities in association with The Grammar School at Leeds

King Lear on Tour
heatre of the Dales is touring David Robertson’s adaptation of King Lear from Tuesday 12th – Sunday 24th July. This savage saga of domestic turmoil has been pared down to two hours. Directed by Jim Rastall, it’s set on a scrapheap and its overriding theme is homelessness. The show is budgeted on a shoestring and the12-strong professional cast performs on a pittance. But, the performances are still free, as the aim is to give everyone a chance to enjoy Shakespeare. Leeds Black History Walk – An Eye Opener to African History Heritage Corner’s Leeds Black History Walk, created by actor/writer Joe Williams, shares the rich narratives of African humanity in local and world history. This fascinating two hour stroll, starting on the Parkinson Steps at Leeds University, introduces you to Nubian pharaohs, queens, kings and a special Ethiopian prince with connections to Queen Victoria. You’ll discover numerous African contributions to Yorkshire and the world and be constantly surprised at how so much of this rich history somehow got lost or ignored. We are familiar with the Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilisation…but what about the extraordinary Nubian civilisation which predates all of them? ot only did Joe whisk us back thousands of years, he also linked Black History to the present day through taking on the persona of various personalities and linking to many well-known events and people in Leeds – many associated with the university. The walk was inspired by the dedication of Arthur France MBE (who founded Leeds Carnival), Dr Carl Hylton and Paul Auber to the Leeds Bi-Centenary Transformation Project - to present positive perspectives of African history. As a founding member of the Diasporian Stories Research Group in 1995, Joe soaked up information from fellow founders Audrey Dewjee and Allison Edwards on Africans in Britain, and further research revealed how Roman emperors built temples dedicated to
African gods– hence 2,000 year old mummified African priests having been discovered in Yorkshire. The walk ends with a visit to the grave of Pablo Fanque, celebrated Briton of African origin. Born William Darby in Norwich, 1810, he was already
a famous performer when he formed his own circus in Wakefield in 1841. He performed in Leeds on many occasions. His popular circus toured nationally until his death in 1871. John Lennon drew inspiration from one of Pablo’s posters for the song ‘For the Benefit of Mr. Kite’ on the Beatles’ ‘Sergeant Pepper’ album. Heritage Corner encourages discourse through creative projects, working with creative practitioners like dancer David Hamilton, visual artist Carol Sorhaindo, poet Khadijah Ibrahiim and actress Leah Francis. The 2016 Kirkstall Art Trail is a celebration of art in the community, with over 80 local artists and creative organisations taking part.

A Ring for Everyone BBC Radio 3 has confirmed that it will broadcast Opera North’s complete ‘Ring’ cycle from Sage Gateshead, from 5th – 10th July.
irected by Peter Mumford and conducted by Opera North’s outgoing Music Director Richard Farnes, Opera North’s ‘Ring’ is one of the most critically regarded opera projects of recent years, highly praised for both the standard of musical performance and for its clarity and accessibility to new audiences. Few works loom as large as Richard Wagner’s monumental ‘Ring’ (Der Ring des Nibelungen, or The Ring of the Nibelung), a cycle of four operas comprising more than 15 hours of music, usually performed across four days. The story, which Wagner devised based on ancient Nordic and German legends, is an epic tale of heroes, gods, giants and dragons battling for control of a magic ring which grants power and wealth to its owner. It begins with music that evokes the dawn of time, and ends with the cataclysmic destruction of the world of the gods, and contains some of the most famous and influential music ever written.
Opera North’s version dispenses with set, costumes and props, highlighting Wagner’s intensely powerful music. Lighting and video design enhance the performances, with a triptych of screens in the live performances providing abstract visuals and English text. This compelling and visceral format places the orchestra on stage, with the singers addressing the audience, and the camera, directly, bringing the epic story thrillingly to life. “The Ring is a monumental work of art - complex, multi-layered, controversial and deeply thoughtprovoking, it is undoubtedly among the greatest pieces of music drama that have ever been written”, said Richard Mantle, Opera North General Director. “It is a masterpiece which everyone should have the opportunity to engage with, but live performances are comparatively rare.” In addition, digital commissioning body, The Space, has collaborated with Opera North to produce an on-line version. The film will be made available to stream on-line later in the year. Sung in German it will be fully subtitled in English and include additional narrative elements explaining significant plot points.

The results will help to identify the potential impact of the scheme and contribute to the decision making process. Headingley Ward We all know the blight of Yorkshire Stone Paving thefts right across North Leeds. It is difficult to catch the perpetrators and then we all have to live with the effect afterwards. Local authorities right across the UK have faced similar problems and over the past year we’ve been looking at a number of schemes and their effectiveness. CCTV on every street corner would be excessive, and smart water (marking the stones with a UV stamp) offers some deterrence. The one thing that seems to reduce these thefts better than any other is resetting them. Many of these stones were laid so many years ago that they now sit loosely, making thefts quick and easy. They are gone before anyone has a chance to notice them. In the Cardigan Triangle a number of our Yorkshire Stones have been reset into the pavement - come and have a look for yourself! You can see

Headingley Councillors are working with Leeds College of Building, whose apprentices will now have a joint project with Leeds City Council to replace and reset this Yorkshire Stone Paving incorporated into their course. While it won’t all be done overnight, we will see our street scene improved over time, and offer valuable experience to apprentices. On a side note, I’d like to welcome newly elected Cllr Al Garthwaite to our team. Al brings immense experience to our area, and I know she will work with Cllr Neil Walshaw and myself on continuing to improve our local area.

Kirkstall Festival – Bigger and Better Than Ever! The 2016 Kirkstall Festival (now in its 36th year) is on Saturday 9th July, 11am – 5pm, in the grounds of Kirkstall Abbey, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever!
his year’s theme is ‘Heroes and Heroines’. As always, the Festival starts with a parade of local groups and schools travelling along Morris Lane and into the Abbey grounds, where there will be activities and entertainment for all ages. Of course, all participants are encouraged to dress up as their favourite hero or heroine for the parade. After its fantastic success last year, Battle of Bands returns on the Youth Stage, plus there’ll be a variety of musicians, dancers and comedians on the Main Stage and across the site. All the traditional favourites will be there too, including fairground rides, the dog show, and the church service. Entirely volunteer run, the festival is a free community fun day designed to appeal to the whole family. Last year it attracted
over 20,000 people across the day. This year it boasts the largest number of stalls to date – including many community groups and organisations, and a wide range of food concessions. While the Festival is free, visitors are asked to purchase a programme (£2), which gives details of everything that is happening across the site. All proceeds from sale of the programmes will go towards ensuring that there will be a 37th Kirkstall Festival. Wherever possible visitors are asked to take public transport. There is limited free parking available, as well as disabled parking closer to the site. Kirkstall Art Trail, a Festival Fringe event, returns for a second year, and this time for a full weekend, 16th & 17th July, with more artists and venues and plenty of activities.

Adel Neighbourhood Forum The Forum has now reached the final stages of producing the Adel Neighbourhood Plan, which has 18 objectives that have evolved into six policy initiatives. Leeds City Council has identified sites that it considers suitable for development. The Adel Reformatory site contains a Grade II listed building that is in a poor state of repair and The Forum has advised the Council of alternative plans for this site with smaller units (flats/ houses) plus commercial/social use. On the Dunstarn Lane brownfield site the Forum is proposing smaller concentrated dwellings and a design that fits in with the neighbourhood. The Forum believes that development on two sites should be resisted – the one opposite Adel Parish Church, and the greenbelt site on Dunstarn Lane. The Forum also drew up a list of areas it would like to see designated as green space – 22 sites have been identified that meet the set criteria for community use. Cycle ways and paths also need to have good connectivity. The Forum will produce a flyer and distribute it to all households in Adel in early September 2016 and public meetings will be held in early October. The comments received then will be incorporated into the final document, which will go to a referendum needing 50% of those who vote to approve the Plan. Horsforth School Stages Play about Underage Soldiers at The Battle of The Somme ne fine Summer day in 1914, Horace Iles (14) from Woodhouse volunteered for the ‘Leeds Pals’ battalion and this courageous decision led to his death in a volley of machine gun fire almost two years later. He was the youngest of the ‘Pals’ to die in the opening hour of the battle of the Somme and is buried in the cemetery at Serre. Horace is the main character in Horsforth School’s production of ‘The Pals’, which will be performed at the school by fourteen Year 10 boys on 13th/14th July. It tells the story of Horace, from his arrival in France in March until that fateful morning of 1st July 1916 when, along with so many others, he gave his life for his country.
Although powerfully built for his age, Horace was just sixteen and a half at the time of his death. All British soldiers at the Somme had volunteered. The ‘Pals’ battalions were recruited in many northern towns and often recruiters turned a blind eye when an enthusiastic but clearly underage lad presented himself. The play makes no comment on the rights or wrongs of the war but just asks that people remember these young lads and the terrible fate that befell them. Horsforth Renews its Fairtrade Status orsforth has successfully renewed its Fairtrade Town Status for two years, following its commitment to promoting Fairtrade principles.
The town’s Fairtrade Steering Group plans to promote Fairtrade to more community groups and businesses in the area by taking part in campaigns, including the nationwide Fairtrade Fortnight at the end of February. Horsforth was first awarded Fairtrade status in 2015 in recognition of the strong support for Fairtrade in the town, and the achievement of five qualifying goals, such as a wide availability
of Fairtrade products in shops and catering outlets, and high levels of local support. “Fairtrade changes lives”, said Rev Matt Wright, Spokesperson for Fairtrade Horsforth. “This is a positive achievement but we mustn’t stop here – we must continue to raise awareness and help more people choose Fairtrade products. The rules governing trade laws won’t change unless we help them along. Whether you live or work in Horsforth, you can make a difference!” Adam Gardner, Communities Campaigns Manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “Thanks to the

They need love, safety, security and stable homes where they can stay for a few days, weeks, months, years or longer as part of a family. A Special Day for Canon John You may think that 90 is a good age, but the Queen is a mere youngster in comparison to Reverend Canon John Clayton of Bramhope, who recently celebrated his 105th birthday and 80 years as an ordained priest in the Church of England. What a Difference Volunteers Make! A Vigil Each week, 700 volunteers contribute an amazing 2,550 hours to St Gemma’s Hospice. That’s over 127,000 hours in the last year alone!
St Gemma’s volunteers are at the very heart of the care that the Hospice provides. They have many roles, including helping in the kitchen; cheering on runners at events; manning stalls at fairs; holding collections, maintaining the hospice’s gardens; welcoming visitors at reception; shopping for patients on the ward; providing complementary therapies to patients and their families; sorting clothes and serving customers in St Gemma’s shops; providing spiritual
and emotional support; or providing administrative support and expertise. All volunteers help to care for people at the most difficult time in their lives and the hospice is so grateful for their support. for the 20,000 The River Somme is a quiet, unremarkable river in North Eastern France. If it had not been for the catastrophic conflict between 1914 and 1918, we would probably never have heard of it. On 1st July 1916, following two weeks of heavy bombardment of the German lines, eleven divisions of the British Army (over one hundred thousand men) were ordered to attack. Unfortunately, the German defensive positions had not been as thoroughly destroyed as was hoped and the German machine gunners emerged from their dugouts. Nearly 20,000 British soldiers were killed and at least as many were seriously injured. The Royal British Legion has called for vigils to mark this centenary. Friday 1st July, 7.30am, marks the exact time when the order to attack was given. The proposal is to hold the vigil at each of the parish War Memorials, and for a Church bell to be tolled – a memorable homage to those soldiers whose lives were so brutally cut short on that day. If you are in the vicinity of St Chad’s and would like to join their vigil, gather at the War Memorial on Otley Road at 7.30am. Revd Tom Lusty will lead the proceedings. There will be readings and John Bradbrook will present a poem ‘To Germany’ by 19 year old Charles Sorley who died in the conflict.

One of the most exciting and charismatic small birds of prey, the hobby only appears in the UK in Spring and Summer, migrating each year from its wintering grounds in southern Africa. It is a similar size to the kestrel with long, pointed wings and a square-cut tail, but, unlike the kestrel, it doesn’t hover but has a dashing swooping flight, as it hunts for aerial prey like small birds and large insects. The small birds it preys on include those which themselves spend most of their time in the air – swallows and swifts – while its insect prey includes dragonflies,
which it sometimes eats on the wing. It is capable of rapid bursts of speed and breathtaking turns, and is a wonderful sight to see, especially when a number of hobbies are hunting together. It breeds in

RSPB’s Big Wild Sleep Out ardens come alive with a host of mysterious sounds and shadows as nocturnal creatures go about their business under cover of darkness. Bats start to hunt at dusk, their weak fluttering flight quite different from birds, avoiding collisions by echolocation – locating objects from the echoes of the sounds the bats make. Tawny owls prefer complete dark so are harder to see, but you cannot miss their familiar calls – the female’s too-whit and the male’s answering too-woo. Small snuffling and rustling noises are probably small mammals like hedgehogs and mice, which emerge from their daytime hiding places to forage for food. They also have to watch out for larger nocturnal mammals like foxes and badgers which prey on them, but which will also eat a variety of other small creatures. Every year, the RSPB encourages people to uncover the hidden world of their own back garden as part of Big Wild Sleep
Out – this year from 29th – 31st July. You can register now. Those who register will receive fantastic ideas to help make the most of the experience – especially for kids. Kirkstall Community Garden (in Church Lane Allotments, Woodbridge Garth, LS6 3LH), is run by a group of volunteers with a passion for growing their own vegetables and supporting the local community. Their aim is to engage, inspire and empower people to grow their own food and eat more healthily, whilst enjoying nature and meeting new friends. Every Sunday they host workshops at the Community Garden. Sessions cover how to plant and care for fruit, vegetables and herbs; maintaining your garden; and how to cook and store produce. Another core aim of the Garden is to support the local community with regular, free harvest boxes of produce, grown by the volunteers. This offer is available to all charity projects, PAYF cafes, community centres and support projects. The group is happy to discuss which type of produce is preferred or used more regularly, so they can adjust the growing plans for certain items. Industry Weekend at Leeds College of Music Leeds College of Music has become renowned for having a life cycle of music education under one roof, and on 16th/17th July they’re holding a special Industry Weekend to support the graduate section of that life cycle. he weekend is open to any musician, not just graduates of the College, and costs just £20 (including lunch and refreshments). It features two days of workshops, one-to-one advice, networking and creative input to help emerging musicians take the next step in their career. It’s all about discussing ideas, getting advice, building understanding and confidence, and helping projects become reality. There will be something for everyone, regardless of musical direction; from artistry sessions aimed at troubleshooting performance skills, to workshops to maximise web presence. There will be accountants, legal experts, funding application help and networking. There will also be an Open Mic night on Saturday evening to allow everyone show off their talents.

Cloth Cat: Improving Lives Through Music Cloth Cat (established 1999) is a charity that aims to improve peoples’ lives through music, using music to nurture new skills and create opportunities for those in disadvantaged circumstances, and to help them to develop personally, socially and culturally. elping people transition from institutionalisation back into the community is central to its aims. Despite limited funding, Cloth Cat has managed to organise a whole range of activities, often in partnership with other charities and public sector organisations. Together with the Workers’ Educational Association, it has been running a programme of music courses at venues across the city since 2001. These include courses from ukulele to sound engineering, and from singing to music production, which thousands of people have benefited from.
At Armley Prison, Cloth Cat worked with Billy Bragg and his charity ‘Jail Guitar Doors’ in the rehabilitation of offenders. It has also run sessions at homeless hostels around Leeds. Following work at Wetherby Young Offenders Unit, it’s about to embark on a project with ex young offenders in a bid to encourage them to follow a more positive path in society. Based at Old Chapel Studios in Holbeck, Cloth Cat services are more in demand than ever. Current projects involve developing a DVD about careers in the music industry for use in schools and job centres; work at the Newsam Centre (a mental health unit at Seacroft Hospital), which includes a regular singing and songwriting workshop; and a ‘Music From The Attic’ project at Kirkstall Education Cricket Club, encouraging people to pick up their instruments again, touch up their skills, and start jamming. Cloth Cat is also involved in running festivals over the Summer, including events in Beeston and
Armley, and running the main stage at the Northern Green Gathering, a four day environmental festival in the Peak District. The Cloth Cat weekly open mic night at The Chemic Tavern in Woodhouse, now in it’s 21st year, gives people the chance to showcase their skills playing alongside more established acts; and the monthly Instrumental night at Inkwell in Chapel Allerton raises awareness of mental health issues, as well as much needed funds for workshops and entertainment for patients at mental health institutions in Leeds. “There’s never a quiet day at Cloth Cat”, said Mike Jolly, Project Coordinator. “There’s always so much to do and so many ways in which we can use music to make people’s lives better. It’s really challenging work and always a hand to mouth existence, but it’s so rewarding to see how music and our programmes can really help.”

THE NICE GUYS DIRECTED BY: SHANE BLACK STARRING: RYAN GOSLING, RUSSELL CROWE, ANGOURIE RICE
CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 116 MINS his knockabout ‘70s set comedy crime caper is the latest from Shane Black who pretty well defined the odd couple buddy cop genre with his screenplay for the first Lethal Weapon and brilliantly sent it up with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, a career high point for the writer-director. If you’ve seen any of the film projects to which Black has been attached then you’ll likely know what to expect; Bromance! Shoot-Outs! Wisecracks! Fisticuffs! Vehicular Mayhem! All these elements are present and correct in The Nice Guys, which deploys them entertainingly and with verve. The unlikely pairing this time around is a couple of private eyes, street-smart bruiser Jackson Healy (Crowe) and booze-soaked doofus Holland March (Gosling) who find themselves flung together when they discover they’ve both been tasked with tracking down the same missing girl. Their search takes them on a trawl through the seamier side of ‘70s Los Angeles replete with conspiracy, political corruption and a murdered adult film star. Throughout their travails, which grow ever more convoluted, Healy and March are aided by the interventions of March’s precocious teenage daughter Holly (newcomer Angourie Rice making an impression in a role that, had the film

actually been made in the ‘70s, would most likely have gone to Jodie Foster). In interviews Russell Crowe has stated that he wasn’t particularly taken with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’s arch, knowing, postmodern subversion of genre conventions, considering it too clever by half. Well, the Nice Guys is certainly more straightforward and, yes, I guess you could say dumbed down but even if it doesn’t quite have the cracking, whipsmart dialogue of the aforementioned film it succeeds through its buoyant, exuberant energy and some well executed sight gags. The buddy dynamic here is sustained through a kind of low-key chemistry and lovable rogue charm with the two co-stars playing to their strengths; Crowe, not an actor particularly renowned for his funny bones, is squarely in his comfort zone sticking to his long-cultivated tough guy shtick whereas Gosling, who’s repeatedly proven he’s more than just a pretty face, again confirms beyond doubt that he’s got his comedy chops well and truly
on lock, playing dumb brilliantly with a kind of inspired imbecility and a keen sense of slapstick. His pratfalls provide the majority of the films laugh out loud moments. It would be fair to say that Shane Black seems to be coasting somewhat with this one, it’s not his punchiest script, there’s nothing startlingly original about it and it’s kind of bythe-numbers but, like its central characters, it does have a certain charm with its lurid ‘70s period stylings, a kick ass vintage soundtrack and a substantial sense of fun. As undemanding, schlocky pulp entertainment goes, it’s well worth your time.

Our Dementia Diary: An Academic’s Story achael Dixey, Professor of Health Promotion at Leeds Beckett University, has charted her experience of her partner Irene’s dementia in a new book - ‘Our Dementia Diary: Irene, Alzheimer’s and Me’. “The book started purely as a journal, a way of coping with my partner developing Alzheimer’s”, said Rachael. “After showing it to Brian Daniels, who wanted to write a play about it, he suggested that it would be good enough to publish. This is quite a step from my usual writing - of scientific papers and the like. It felt very exposing to write such a personal story. But I hope it might help anyone else going through it, or indeed, through any loss.”

Irene and Rachael had been together for nearly 30 years when Irene started to falter and was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s in her early 50s. ‘Our Dementia Diary’ tells the story of how, with the dramatic deterioration in Irene’s health, Rachael turned from lover and soul mate to friend, carer, and finally, to single woman. When Irene was too ill to remain at home, she moved to a care home, where she spent the last six years of her life. When she died aged 66, the couple had spent half their lives together. This highly personal and intimate memoir was written over a period of years. Moving, and often heartbreaking, it charts the daily decline and inexorable
loss of Irene. With brutal honesty, Rachael tells of love, loss, and life with Alzheimer’s, and raises serious questions about how our society cares for those who develop the disease, especially at a young age, and how it deals with those affected in the gay, lesbian and transgender community. Rachael’s story inspired the play ‘Don’t Leave Me Now’, by Brian Daniels. It is available on You-Tube, and there will be readings at St Gemma’s Hospice on Thursday 21st July, and at Shipley Library on 22nd July. Ralph Thoresby student Adam Bricklebank (15) was recently recognised for his fundraising work for Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, which Adam has been fundraising for since he was 11 years old. The school Summer holidays are almost here and everyone with children is looking for interesting things to include over those lazy, hazy days of Summer! Leeds is a fantastic place for kids during the holidays. As usual, there are loads of activities through its libraries, museums and parks. Crea at te a Music ca al a l in a Week! Leeds Youth Opera (LYO) has planned a Summer School from 15th – 19th August at Adel and Ireland Wood Community Centre. If you are aged between eight and 16 and fancy performing in a musical, here is your opportunity to work with industry professionals. Join this award winning company and create a musical in a week! You’ll learn new songs, as well as well known numbers, and will have the chance to act, dance and learn about choral singing too.
Summer Spectacular, a festival for children and young people up to 18 years of age, provides the opportunity for them to take part in artist-led workshops, master classes and family fun. Part of the City Varieties learning programme, the festival aims to give young people a chance to develop new skills whilst having fun and meeting new friends. The City Varieties Youth Theatre Company presents its fifth full scale musical ‘The Addams Family’ on 29th/30th July. Directed by Lizi Patch (Punching The Sky), the 60-strong cast of 8-21 year olds will bring everyone’s favourite morbid household to life. In August, early years music specialists Tiny Tempo bring music, movement and play sessions for little ones aged up to seven and their families. Children aged 7-11 can explore drama, singing, stage combat and circus theatre in a week-long ‘Rewind/Remix Summer School’ with Duck Egg Theatre, culminating in an on-stage performance. Young people (16-18) considering a career in the industry can experience the world of theatre and learn from the professionals in Theatre Master Classes. The Summer Spectacular ends with City Varieties’ family-friendly Heritage Open Day on Sunday 11th September.
