Every month I’m blown away by the variety of things going on in Leeds and around our area. Of course, Headingley LitFest is about to burst onto the scene, and a late addition to the line-up is Ken Livingston, who will be speaking at Leeds University Union. Pixie Lott will make a great Holly Golightly in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ at The Grand. Australian cult band The Necks and James McVinnie explore the secret sounds of Leeds Town Hall’s magnificent organ; and Lesley Garrett stars as a toilet attendant in a brand new opera at Howard Assembly Room. Horsforth Walk of Art is enthusiastically preparing for its

BENJAMIN WILSON (1721-1788) ARTIST AND SCIENTIST
Next time you visit Temple Newsam House, take a look at the picture which hangs above the grand oak staircase – a charming painting of the five young daughters of the 9th Viscount Irwin in the 1770s, playing some light-hearted game out in the country. Its informality contrasts with the stiff family portraits that usually clutter stately homes. The artist was Benjamin Wilson, a Leeds man who made his name in London, as admired in his day as his contemporaries William Hogarth and Joshua Reynolds, with a respected position at the court of George III. He was an experimental scientist too, a fellow of the Royal Society, in correspondence with learned men across Europe. Yet today he is virtually unknown. enjamin Wilson was born in Leeds in 1721, the fourteenth and youngest child of a wealthy cloth merchant from a large, influential Leeds family. He was born at Mill Hill, where the Wilson family occupied the Manor House (where the Scarbrough Hotel is now, opposite the railway station). This grand house had walls and ceilings decorated with paintings by the distinguished French artist Jacques Parmentier, which people flocked to admire and inspired Benjamin as a child. He loved to copy them and found he could sell his copies to his school friends ‘for pence and halfpence’ – an enterprising boy! But his education was cut short when his father lost all his money. He was taken on by the French artist Longueville who was working at Gisburn, but after a year decided to seek his fortune in London. From his own account, he walked most of the way, arrived penniless, and had to depend on a relation’s handout of two guineas (with a new suit of clothes) while he looked for work. The money lasted him a year – he was notoriously pennypinching! – until he got a post as clerk to a society of lawyers, in the heart of the City. He scrimped and saved, and in his early twenties found a better position that left him time and money to take up painting again. He worked and socialised with the leading artists of the time, and made all the right social connections, important for winning commissions. Portraiture was particularly lucrative: this was how the great and the good made sure they were remembered. He began to win important commissions. After a year working in Ireland, he returned to London in 1750 setting up in an elegant house in Great Queen Street, Holborn. His sitters included many eminent men and women, from the aristocracy, politics, and the arts. As his reputation grew, it’s said that he was earning £1,500 a year and could afford to turn down the offer of a partnership

Many of his portraits of celebrities like the actor David Garrick were reproduced to meet popular demand – just as now people were greedy for pictures of their heroes. He even dabbled in satirical cartoons, with some success. But there was another completely different side to his life. From an early age, he had read widely and become fascinated by the new science of electricity. He conducted experiments, built his own apparatus, and corresponded with some of the leading men working in the field. In 1746 when he was
only 25 he published the first of a long series of research papers on electricity which led to his election as a fellow of the Royal Society in 1751 and later to the Society’s gold medal. He was particularly interested in the design of lightning conductors, which brought him into a long public dispute with Benjamin Franklin. His work, which he continued throughout his life, was widely respected, and he was honoured by membership of four European academies. About 1771, when he was 50, Wilson married Jane Hetherington, well-born and beautiful but with no dowry. She suited him well – he claimed ‘he saved more money from the time he first knew her than ever before’! They had seven children, one of them later the distinguished general Sir Robert Wilson. Benjamin acquired a royal patron in the Duke of York, George III’s younger brother, who helped him to an important official post, and he won the King’s support both as a painter and as an experimental scientist. He was welcomed at Windsor and at court – he had made it to the top. In later life he lost money in speculation, complained of poverty, but died in comfortable enough circumstances, leaving his children an account of his life. His reputation has faded, but many of his paintings and prints remain in national collections, a reminder of this Leeds painter cum scientist for whom the streets of London were indeed paved with gold.

In a last minute development, Headingley LitFest has managed to book Ken Livingstone, who has just published his book ‘Being Red – A Politics of the Future’, for an afternoon event at Leeds University Union on Tuesday 8th March 1pm. e is promising to serve up an insider’s account of the Labour Party and its future, at a pivotal moment in its history. At a time when many are looking to revive Labour’s potential, Livingstone has form. His account takes the reader from the self-proclaimed ‘radical socialism’ of the Greater London Council, to his controversial independent candidacy that saw him branded as ‘dangerous’ by Tony Blair’s supporters, to the political battles against privatisation and pollution that characterised his time as Mayor. At each point, he suggests possible lessons for those who would seek to follow, or improve on, his achievements today. Having spent years at the head of the Greater London Council, served two terms as London Mayor, and having gone head to head with Boris Johnson, Being Red offers a clear-sighted study of the left’s possibilities and limitations, with reflections on the current state of the Labour Party and a look into its future.

Pad Ferguson Patrick Ferguson, also known Pad, Fergie or The Bull, turned 100 on 5th February and a big family party was held at The Irish Centre to celebrate. Being the eldest of 14, this was quite the party and a bit of a family reunion. A native of Ireland, he also received the ‘Centenary Bounty’ from the Irish President. Pad was born in Attymass, Co. Mayo. He came to England aged 17 with his father to work on the harvest. They would go around to different farms, undertaking labouring work, including picking potatoes and beets. In fact, he was a labourer all his life and has always been very strong. Most of his siblings have spent time in Leeds and five brothers stayed and made their homes here, but some returned to Ireland or followed work in other parts of England. Eight of his brothers and sisters are still alive, the youngest being 74. He met his wife, Margaret (known as Peg), at dances in Leeds, despite living only a stone’s throw away in Ireland. They got married in 1939 at St Ann’s Cathedral and made their home in Headingley. They had one daughter, Betty, and have three grandchildren (Carmel, Julian and Kieran) and five greatgrandchildren (Georgia, Olivia, Ciara, James and Edward). Pad has always been a family man and is very close to everyone. After 63 years of marriage Peg died in 2002. He now lives with Betty and Kieran in Morley.

he ICE Ball, which will be held at The Craiglands Hotel in Ilkley on Saturday 7th May, is aiming to smash its own fundraising record and raise in excess of £15,000 to support research into neurological conditions. In aid of the Yorkshire Brain Research Centre, and sponsored by the Yorkshire Clinic, the event, is organised by Bev Wright who was a fitness instructor for 20 years until when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2013. She assumed her symptoms were related to injuries sustained in her career and initially saw a physiotherapist after she suffered what she thought was a shoulder injury. But
after developing hip problems, a ‘drop foot’ and numbness in her rib cage, she went to her GP, was referred for tests, and was subsequently diagnosed with MS. “I was so shocked”, said Bev. “I knew I had to do something to raise funds and awareness of the condition. After attending a ball for the Bexley Wing at St James’s University Hospital, I got together with a small group of friends and decided to organize an MS charity ball.” The first ball, attended by 180 guests in November 2013, raised £6,300, which was donated to the West Yorkshire MS Therapy Centre and a local branch of the MS Society. The second event
attracted 293 people and raised an impressive £11,000 for the Yorkshire Brain Research Centre. Now Bev and her friends are hoping the ICE Ball, which is expected to attract over 400 guests, will smash their own fundraising record! In addition to all the great things you would expect (Champagne reception, delicious dinner, live music, auction etc.) The ICE Ball will also feature vocalist Liz Keeting, and professional magician John Danbury. Life & Style intage menswear is big business, its covers a huge range of niches, cliques, genres and sub-genres. Like women’s wear, it appeals to both the dyed in the wool full-on re-enactors, as well as the everyday wearer who mixes preworn items with their high street clobber.
As you know, we do tend to bang on about vintage, vintage, vintage – well, sorry, there’s no change this month! We’re gonna harp on a bit more, specifically about menswear: another subject that is close to our hearts.

Your typical male North Leeds shopper is a timid beast at best and is easily frightened off by too much vintage frou-frou. Unless, that is, vintage is really his thing. But there is something to be said about a bit of caution and circumspection when it comes to buying vintage clothes, especially if you are ‘a typical bloke’ who is not that comfortable with standing out in a crowd. He is happier making a subtle sartorial declaration. Growing in popularity, vintage ‘chore’ (so called because it was originally worn for doing chores!) or workwear, offers such an opportunity. Call me and other men strange, but there is something extremely attractive about clothes that have been designed and made with manual labour in mind. So, this aesthetic (and yes it is an aesthetic) is about an appreciation of the item’s provenance, its utility, and its connection with the worker who toiled in it - not worn in a re-enactment ‘dress up’ way, but as an everyday item mixed with one’s usual nonvintage items. That 50 year old, washed out indigo, French peasant jacket, with its worn collar, hole in the sleeve and fusty smell is a beautiful item because of the evidence of what could be called ‘honest use’, not despite it. Every pocket and seam is there for a reason and nothing is superfluous. So too are the game pockets in the back of the vintage American duck hunting jacket. So why does your average IT consultant go a bit ga-ga over vintage chore wear? Some bright spark has suggested that it helps them reconnect to a notion of masculinity that for the vast majority of men no longer includes hard physical graft, something us XY’s are instinctively drawn to. I’m not so sure, perhaps vintage chore wear is just dead cool.

Pixie Lott will star as Holly Golightly in a new production of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ at Leeds Grand Theatre from 4th – 9th April. ased on a novella by Truman Capote, the play is set in New York in 1943 (not the 1960s as in the film!). Fred (Matt Barber, recently seen in Downton Abbey), a young writer from Louisiana, meets Holly Golightly, a vivacious, elusive good-time girl. Everyone falls in love with Holly – including Fred. But Fred is poor, and Holly’s other suitors include a playboy millionaire and the future president of Brazil! As war rages in Europe, Holly begins to fall in love with Fred – just as her past catches up with her. Capote’s classic tale has been adapted for stage by playwright Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain), and contains memorable songs from the era, as well as original music by Grant Olding (One Man, Two Guvnors). Richard describes this version as ‘rougher edged and more candid’ than the

play. “I am so excited to play Holly Golightly”, she told us just before starting rehearsals. “I’ll need to learn so many lines as Fred and Holly are on stage most of the time. It is a complicated piece of writing and we have to make sure we do it justice. If you are familiar with the film,
look out for the changes in the storyline. And, I love the 40’s fashions. The set too is very stylish, very Holywood.” The production is directed by Nikolai Foster, Artistic Director of Curve, who has directed a number of productions at West Yorkshire Playhouse. And, the design is by Matthew Wright, who worked with Nikolai on ‘White Christmas’ at The Playhouse. Art & Culture iolinist David Greed, leader of the Orchestra of Opera North, is the special guest artist and will bring the first half to a close with a performance of Vaughan Williams’s visionary Romance for violin and orchestra – The Lark Ascending.
St Peter’s Singers have been presenting sacred music on Good Friday at Leeds Minster for many years. This year’s event, held with the generous support of the Friends of the Music of Leeds Minster, starts at 7pm and includes music by Johannes Brahms and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The first half features two magical motets by Brahms: Warum ist das Licht gegeben and the Geistliches Lied, a masterpiece with deeply expressive organ accompaniment.
The second half of the concert is given over to Brahms’s sevenmovement German Requiem. Its glorious orchestral scoring, beautiful writing for choir, and the two vocal soloists make for a heady mixture of memorable and often deeply meditative music that makes the work especially appropriate for Good Friday. The performance will be sung in German with a full translation provided in the programme. It’s March and Irish History Month is here again! An initiative of the Leeds-based Irish Arts Foundation, it was first celebrated in 2007. It exists to promote knowledge of Irish History and experiences in Britain and beyond, and it aims to highlight the many positive contributions that Irish people have made to British society. nce again Irish Arts Foundation has lined up a programme of events to introduce new audiences to the vibrancy of Irish arts, heritage, culture and history. 2016 is, of course, a landmark year in Irish history as they commemorate the events of 1916 in Ireland. Particular highlights this year include a lecture day at HEART in Headingley, facilitated

The Further Adventures nna-Maria Athanasiou, author of the wildly popular ‘Waiting for Summer’ romance series, returns to Leeds for the ‘Leeds Author Signing Event’ at the Marriott Hotel, off Boar Lane, on Saturday 5th March. Anna-Maria grew up in Meanwood and attended Abbey Grange C of E High School. After studying Hotel Catering and spending eighteen months in Switzerland, she married and moved to Cyprus. An avid reader of everything from glossy magazines to classics, if she wasn’t busy with her two boys Anna-Maria was lost in a book or playing out imaginative scenarios in her head. As the boys got older she toyed with the idea of writing down some of these ideas, but never dreamt that today she would be on her third romantic novel! She describes her series as ‘erotic but romantic’ fiction, with an engaging plot to keeps readers hooked on the storyline from start to finish. In 2013 London Publishers Austin Macauley offered her a two book contract, and ‘Waiting for Summer’ Book One was published in September, closely followed by Book Two in June 2014. With two successes firmly under her belt, this is her first author signing event and she is delighted that it is in Leeds. The story of Florence Nightingale’s nursing career is well known. But what about the high society life she gave up in favour of a very different path? ‘Our Cousin Florence’, a new exhibition at Lotherton Hall from 18th March – 31st December, examines and contrasts the life she chose by exploring the young, fashionable, little known Florence. reviously unseen correspondence and sketches illustrate Florence’s young life, which was firmly embedded in aristocratic society. She was particularly close to her cousin Ma r i a n n e, who married Sir Douglas Galton - later to become a close advisor to Florence on hospital design. The letters highlight her internal struggles to justify leaving the life she felt created a ‘forced idleness’ in favour of a career in nursing, and contrasts her world as a young woman with her wartime experiences. Lotherton Hall was the home of Marianne’s youngest daughter, Gwendolen Gascoigne, Florence’s goddaughter, and was where Marianne retreated to after her husband died. This new archive material all belonged to Marianne. Items on display include
paintings, childhood sketches, jewellery, toys and Florence’s desk, brought to Lotherton Hall by Gwendolen. Pivotal to the exhibition are key fashion pieces of the period, similar to those Florence and her cousins would have worn, which provide a stark contrast to clothing worn by nurses during the Crimean War. Many of these are part of the permanent collection at Lotherton Hall, the home of Leeds Museums and Galleries’ extensive and extraordinary collection of fashion and textiles. There will be a performance of ‘Our Cousin Flo’ in conjunction with Carriageworks, at Lotherton Hall on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June.

Northern Ballet’s Swan Lake Returns to The Grand David Nixon’s wonderful Swan Lake returns to Leeds Grand Theatre from 3rd – 12th March. his production of one of ballet’s most famous love stories, is a modern take on the classic, set in New England at the start of the twentieth century. First performed in 2004, it captures the long lazy summers and old world grace of the period, featuring costumes that capture the affluence of the era. Stunning set design by Dave Gillan, lighting by Peter Mumford, and Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable score played by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia complete the retelling of this famous story. “Our Swan Lake offers a different telling to traditional versions of the ballet”, said David Nixon, “whilst still remaining true to the spirit of the story and incorporating popular elements that audiences will be familiar with, from Tchaikovsky’s score to the dance of the four cygnets.”

Artistic Director and internationally acclaimed baritone, Roderick Williams, has chosen ‘storytelling’ as his theme. As his many fans know, he is the master in the art of communicating sung text. He, and Leeds Lieder’s new director, pianist Joseph Middleton, have assembled a mouth watering line-up of like minded artists: including the internationally acclaimed and one of the 21st century’s finest singers, Dutch
soprano Elly Ameling, tenor Mark Padmore, pianists Julius Drake and Iain Burnside, the Myrthen Ensemble and Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Katarina Karnéus, alongside rising stars. The spoken word will be juxtaposed alongside the sung, as Leeds welcomes actors (including Rory Kinnear), and education will also be at the heart of the festival’s activities. Hundreds of schoolchildren will be involved in song projects over the months running up to the Festival and representatives from the country’s top conservatoires will appear in master classes and performance platforms. Nadine inspired many of the Phoenix Dance Theatre and the Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) recently came together to announce the passing of Nadine Senior OBE, and to pay a heartfelt tribute to an extraordinary woman. hoenix Dance Theatre, the longest standing contemporary dance company outside London, celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, and its history began with Nadine. It was formed in 1981 by David Hamilton (Artistic Director), Donald Edwards, and Vilmore James, whose enthusiasm for dance was sparked by the tuition they received from Nadine Senior at Harehills Middle School Nadine went on to inspire many of the dancers, choreographers, teachers and dance leaders of today. She lobbied to prove the need for professional dance education in Leeds and founded NSCD in 1985 – the only higher education provision in contemporary dance outside London. Following her retirement in 2001, Nadine was Chair of Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Board of Trustees for six years. Nadine’s natural gift for seeing the best in young people has had a real impact on cultural institutions in Leeds and the national dance landscape. She was committed to ensuring there was a place for talent in Leeds. Her legacy will forever remain embedded in the heart of this city and the wider dance industry, as one of the finest dance champions of her time. Sharon Watson, Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director, was also a student of Nadine’s and, like many
others, was inspired by the pioneering work she did in Harehills Middle School. “I would not be doing what I am doing today if it wasn’t for the nurturing caring and inspiring role she played”, said Sharon. “I’m truly saddened that my long term mentor and guru is no longer with us. So many have been inspired by her work and many more will be supported by her legacy. I have experienced great leadership through Nadine but first and foremost I’ve lost a truly great friend.”

In 2006, Mark Simpson, aged 17, won both BBC Young Musician of the Year as a clarinettist, and BBC Young Composer of the Year, the only individual to have won both competitions – then all hell broke lose! ll of a sudden he was being invited to play with and compose for orchestras all over the world. He would be in London one week, then on to Newcastle, Truro, Liverpool, Chicago, New York, Germany. Unable to fit the many commissions and performances around his studies at The Royal College of Music, he took a year out and moved to Berlin. It was here that he started reading a book of poems by Melanie Challenger and they hit him like a ton of bricks. “I was actually hearing music while reading her poems”, he told us. “I knew immediately that I wanted to work with her.” He approached Melanie to work on his composition ‘The Immortal’ which premiered at Manchester International Festival 2015, set to a libretto by Melanie. This was a difficult, avant garde piece featuring two choirs and orchestra, as well as solo voices. An exciting musical experience, it drew a strong, emotional reaction from the audience, and wide critical acclaim. When approached to write an opera, as part of a three-year partnership between Aldeburgh Music, The Royal Opera and Opera North, he grabbed the opportunity to bring a story he had been playing with for a number of years to the stage, and relished the idea of working again with Melanie, who lives in North Yorkshire. ‘Pleasure’ is a human tragedy played out against the backdrop of a gay nightclub. Musically different to ‘The Immortal’, ‘Pleasure’ is more rooted in reality and more a hybrid form of opera and musical theatre. It tells the story of Val, played by Leslie Garrett, an attendant in the toilets in Pleasure, a hedonistic gay club in the north of England, presided over
by the Bacchanalian drag queen Anna Fewmore. For years, Val has been both a shoulder to cry on and a confidante. When Nathan, a beautiful young man, arrives and leaves a gift for her, it marks the beginning of an emotional and violent night.
‘Pleasure’ will be performed in Liverpool, Aldeburgh and London. ‘Pleasure’, which is directed by Tim Albery, with designs by Leslie Travers, will be performed by four singers – Leslie Garrett, baritone Timothy Nelson as Nathan, tenor Nick Pritchard as Matthew, and baritone Steven Page as Anna Fewmore – alongside the Manchester-based music ensemble Psappha, conducted by Nicholas Kok.

s part of the citywide Time to Shine Project, Touchstone Sikh Elders will be connecting Punjabi speaking families with isolated Punjabi speaking older people, to foster crossgenerational relationships. Once a fortnight, volunteers will invite an older person into their homes to share the evening meal, or raat di roti. Through the ritual of eating together, stories and wisdom can be shared and a stronger sense of community developed. One participant commented: “I would be glad to have someone who comes to pick me up and take me away from the walls I stare at everyday. The idea of having tea together and talking to someone would be amazing.�
There are more than 6,000 Punjabi speakers aged over 50 in Leeds. As people age, they become more at risk for social isolation and loneliness, which can be as damaging to overall health as smoking. Jumping Nestled between Headingley and Moortown, Meanwood has tended to get overlooked. But now things are changing and Meanwood is coming into its own! ‘Way Through The Woods’ started with an event at last year’s Meanwood Festival. It is a chance to celebrate Meanwood Park and The Hollies. Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, ‘Way Through The Woods’ will become a book of words and photographs comprising the memories and stories of people who have used, and still use, these amazing green spaces. During March and April there will be three Sunday afternoon walks with storyteller Matthew Bellwood, followed by a series of Wednesday evening creative writing/storysharing sessions with writer Peter Spafford. There will also be trips to The Liddle Collection at Leeds University, which documents and preserves firsthand accounts of individuals who experienced and were affected by the two World Wars; and to The Discovery Centre.
The resulting book will be launched during this year’s Meanwood Festival in May, organised by the Meanwood Valley Partnership. The Festival will showcase events and activities for the whole community over a ten-day period (21st – 30th May). Music, arts, photography, health, heritage, food and drink will all be represented. The Walks in The Hollies and
Meanwood Park are: 13 & 20 March, and 3rd April. Meet 1.30pm at Meanwood Park Cafe. Each walk will last around two hours. The writing and story-telling workshops will be in The Ranger’s Hut, across the car park from the Cafe, on 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th March (6.30 – 8.30pm). in Memory of Iona Molly Leaf, from Horsforth, is about to undertake a skydive to raise funds in memory of her best friend, Iona, who sadly died from Cystic Fibrosis last year. Molly is determined to raise funds, in Iona’s memory and for the many people who battle with Cystic Fibrosis every day. “We always talked about raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust”, said Molly. “Iona was a girl who never liked to do things by half. We talked about doing all different kinds of things, but the one thing I remember her saying was: ‘If only I was well enough to do a skydive, it would be so cool!’ and I said ‘when your better we’ll do it together’.” Molly has decided to go ahead with the jump in her honour. The charity is asking organisations and individuals to host their own Flat Cap Friday on 18th March, to raise funds for the vital work that it does in Yorkshire funding brain tumour research and supporting those affected by brain tumours. This could be an afternoon tea, quiz night, charity ball, or wackiest flat cap competition! The Council has a statutory duty to ensure that all trees under its control are maintained so that they do not pose unreasonable risks to people or to property. A Tree Risk Management System has been developed to ensure that developing tree hazards are identified early and reduced as quickly as possible. Headingley Post Office and Headingley Stadium You might have seen in the news that Headingley Post Office has been earmarked to be sold off. Unfortunately this seemed inevitable once Royal Mail and the Post Office separated before privatisation, but we must now fight for the survival of the Headingley Post Office.
Work, to be completed in seven days; Developing Hazard which is not safe to leave for more than six months; Developing Hazard not safe to leave for longer than 18 months; and Non Hazard – issues in this category are usually associated with lack of light or TV reception/satellite signal. Unfortunately, homeowners have no legal right to light where shade is cast by trees, nor a legal right to receive satellite or TV reception. Housing Leeds, which owns the Council properties in the city, will consider funding some work where it can be demonstrated that personal health and wellbeing or quality of life is severely affected. There are very strict criteria within the category of ‘Daylight Loss’ which must be met before work will be undertaken.

The Headingley councillors have written to ask that the new stand be of a similar style, must incorporate modern sound proofing to direct as much sound as possible back into the stadium, and also to stress that building work shouldn’t take place during unsociable hours. We will keep you informed of developments.

Information & Advice for People with Learning Disabilities ollowing a staggering success in its’ first year, the second Horsforth Walk of Art is scheduled to take place on 2nd and 3rd July. Already 68 creative individuals have signed up to be involved, together with 53 venues, and many exciting school collaborations are in the pipeline. Entry is open to everyone in and around Horsforth. The organisers are looking for creative people who like to inspire and engage others. From writers, poets, singers and drummers, to artists of all kinds (graffiti, ceramics, textiles, water colours or oils). They want to celebrate creativity in all its forms. They are also looking for venues, so if you have a garage, conservatory, house, or unusual space that they can pair up with an artist for an exhibition, get in touch. Last year Horsforth’s first Walk of ART captured the town’s imagination. Over 70 artists, writers, musicians and craftspeople exhibited their work at 60 locations around Horsforth. Shop windows housed work from all the schools; there were 37 drop in activities, lectures and workshops for of all ages; and Hunger Hills Woods were transformed into an outdoor art gallery. The idea, which grew from a conversation between local residents Lara Rule and Ralph
Through the Maze is an information and advice service for adults with learning disabilities in Leeds.
Bainbridge, was to use creativity as a platform on which to build meaningful and lasting community relationships. Lara is committed to showcasing local talent and encouraging people to try something different and take a creative risk. She is particularly interested in engaging young people with local artists in order to inspire creative problem solving and inventive individuals. Because the Walk of ART is entirely free to attend and participate in, those taking part are encouraged to give something free to the community. Based at Bridge House, Balm Rd, LS10 2TP, it can be reached by the number 12 & 13 buses leaving from outside the Corn Exchange. You don’t need to book, just turn up as the sessions are informal and relaxed. “Information about what is available for adults with learning disabilities in Leeds is already available on our website, and people can also contact us via our support phone line”, said Luke Beaumont, one of the advisors. “Now drop in and talk to a friendly face. The whole team here at Through the Maze is looking forward to welcoming people and helping them find out what’s available for them here in Leeds.” Over the coming months the drop in sessions will be themed and will include specialist guest speakers, but people can drop in with any questions they may have. arch 21st is World Down Syndrome Day and this year’s theme is ‘My Friends, My Community’. The charity Sunshine and Smiles will be celebrating with the launch of a photographic project ‘I Am Me’ at Kirkstall Abbey Visitors Centre on Saturday 19th March (10am – 3pm). For many families, finding out that their baby has Down syndrome is a worrying time with numerous questions. This photographic project aims to capture the journey that children, young people and families travel from those initial feelings of fear, worry and unanswerable questions to those moments of
joy, success and celebration. For most babies, children and young people with Down syndrome, developmental and learning milestones take longer to achieve and need more support and input from parents, carers and others working alongside them. So, when those hard won milestones
are achieved they are a cause for great joy and celebration. The ‘I Am Me’ project will illustrate individual successes and achievements. The resulting photography will be exhibited at Kirkstall Abbey Visitors Centre from Saturday 19th March There will also be a photography workshop in The Chapter House. There are also plans to extend the project and exhibit further afield throughout 2016 and hopefully create a book. hey say a picture paints a thousand words and that was certainly true recently at BETA International, the top show for the equestrian trade, when Bobby and Bessie, two young cobs rescued three years ago by Hope Pastures, gave the audience in the Charles Owen Learning Arena an insight into exactly what rescuing a pony entails. The Hope Pastures’ team took the audience through the rescue process - from first welfare call, rescue and rehabilitation, to seeing the animal leading a fulfilling life in a new home. Bobby and Bessie provided the evidence of how an animal’s life can be turned around. Both are now part of Sophie Kendrick and Danny Kennedy ‘family’. “Seeing animals that have been so badly abused and neglected show such

He talked about how beautiful the gardens were and how he had enjoyed his time outside. Staff were amazed at what a positive difference it had made to him.
The upkeep of the gardens and the care and services provided by the Hospice would simply not be possible without your support. “Year after year people who open their gardens for St Gemma’s receive a fantastic response”, said Emma, a St Gemma’s fundraiser. “It’s a great opportunity to share ideas with other gardeners and, no matter how big or small your garden, there are lots of ways for you to turn it into the perfect fundraising event.” The hospice’s award winning gardens will be open to the public on 18th June, 10am – 2pm. Part of their 30th anniversary season, this concert brings pianist Chris Abrahams out from behind the piano as the trio explore the powerful, intricate and varied sonorities of the Town Hall organ.
James McVinnie, previously Assistant Organist at St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, is fast becoming the country’s leading performer of new organ music. As a member of the Bedroom Community label collective, his boundless approach has led him to collaborate with some of the world’s leading artists including Nico Muhly, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Bryce Dessner (The National). James will play a specially commissioned score by Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher/ Warp Records) which echoes the fast, cut-up beats and synth lines for which he is so well known, interlaced with expansive classical influences. CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 129 MINS eservedly heading up the heavy-hitters in this year’s awards season, this bold, impassioned and exceptionally well-handled film thrillingly tells the story of the reporters at the Boston Globe newspaper who broke the news of widespread child sexual abuse in the Catholic church. Set in the early 2000s, the focus is the Globe’s ‘Spotlight’ team, led by Walter ‘Robby’ Robinson (Michael Keaton), a unit specializing in long-researched, deep investigative pieces that can take up to a year to bring to publication. Spotlight is casting about for its next story when the paper’s new, no nonsense editor directs the team to look into the fact that a local Catholic priest had abused nearly one hundred young boys and those high up in the church’s hierarchy had been aware of this and covered it up.
The film clearly has a sense of reverence for old school journalism
Thus, the team, made up of Mike Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Sasha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Carroll (Brian d’Arcy James) set to work chasing leads, interviewing victims and peeling back layer after layer of the story in a series of revelations that begin to show the true, horrifying extent of the scandal. They certainly have their work cut out for them. Breaking through the conspiracy of silence in a city like Boston with its huge Irish Catholic community, where an imposing church seemingly looms around every corner is no mean feat, particularly when the church’s officials close ranks to protect their own and the institution habitually uses its wealth, power and influence to manipulate victims and their families, the legal system and the press. Given these considerable obstacles, the tenacity and dogged persistence of the Spotlight team is all the more laudable. The film clearly has a sense of reverence for the old school journalistic techniques employed by the team and the rigorous diligence with which they’re carried out, particularly in the face of such resistance and the fact that Catholics make up more than half the Globe’s readership.
Director McCarthy brings an even handedness and clear eyed focus to a story that could easily have spilled over into sensationalism and melodrama in the wrong hands. By putting the nuts
and bolts of investigative journalism front and centre, the film steers clear of overwrought moralizing and, impressively, never feels like it’s taking a swipe at religion itself but rather
applauds the heroism of those determined to expose the deep seated institutional corruption in the Catholic church. Spotlight is powerful, important and serious cinema done right. It’s considered and measured in tone and the storytelling pace intensifies the further down the disturbing rabbit hole the team’s investigation leads them. While adhering to its procedural format, the film never loses sight of the human element of the story which is handled delicately and with compassion. Admirably, Spotlight manages to reaffirm one’s belief that, done well, conscientious journalism can be a powerful tool for justice.

Harriet is Fundraising for Bexley Wing Richmond House School pupil Harriet Williams (9) has set herself an inspirational fundraising challenge for 2016. She aims to raise £2,700 for Ward 88 in the Bexley Wing at St. James Hospital.
ockey players from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) have enjoyed a successful start to their season by winning through to the national finals of a major schools competition. 2016 is the third year in a row that GSAL will compete in the U16 category at the finals of England Hockey’s National Schools Championships for Girls. The U16s will be joined by the U18 team, the second year running that GSAL is represented at the national final in this age group. The national finals take place on 9 and 10 March, at the London 2012 legacy venue Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The competition will feature eight teams in each age group - the winning teams from the five regional competitions plus three of the regional runner-up teams. Both GSAL teams earned their places in the finals by winning the north regional round. The U18s claimed an especially sweet victory in the final of their regional
round by beating the current national champions Stockport Grammar School 5-1, having lost to them at last year’s national finals. U18 coach Gwen Smith said: “They came through some tough games to become northern champions. This is an amazing achievement by all involved, to be one of the top eight teams in the country.” The U16 scored an impressive 76 goals and conceded just 21 on their way to becoming northern champions. They hope to improve on last year’s performance at the national finals, when they won the third place play-off. Year 11 student Gabriella Aston is cocaptain of the U16 and was in the bronze medal winning team at last year’s finals. She said: “The competition was nerve racking with some high quality hockey; it gave us the chance to see how good the teams are and motivated us to improve and train hard. I’m so excited to be going back to the Olympic Park this year.”
Harriet’s father spent a considerable length of time in Ward 88 when he was being treated for lymphoma. He sadly passed away four years ago, and she wants to do something positive in his memory to help others. She hopes to provide free television and phone calls for patients over Christmas and New Year. Harriet began her fundraising in December when she played the baby grand piano in the Bexley Wing for patients, visitors and staff. She also played before the pantomime at the Carriageworks on Christmas Eve. She raised £271 for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre and was inspired to begin the New Year with a new fundraising challenge. This month she is will undertake a 12-hour sponsored Bake-a-thon and plans to sell her baking at school, Brownies and locally. She also plans to play the piano at events throughout the year. Her biggest challenge will be her cycle ride from Leeds to Liverpool with her mum! The Lord Mayor, who presented the awards, commented that the students were not only a credit to White Rose Academies Trust, but also to the Leeds community.
Presented by the Lord Mayor of Leeds at Leeds Civic Hall, the awards commend students for outstanding community service, following nominations by school staff for exceptional citizenship and community service. Leeds West Academy’s Sophie Downham and Carter Ambler were two of the recipients. Carter has been a regular volunteer within BUPA care homes and is a Communication Leader at the Academy. Sophie, who is fundraising to go to India to assist in an aid project, has worked within the Academy to further STEM and has
