JOHN ATKINSON GRIMSHAW (1836-1893) ARTIST

Around 1863 the young artist John Atkinson Grimshaw came with his wife Fanny to live in Cliff Road, Headingley, a quiet lane leading up to Woodhouse Ridge, away from the dirty, smoky town. Here, in their charming new villa with its long back garden, they could enjoy walks along the Ridge to the beautiful Meanwood valley and on to Adel woods, where they collected wild flowers, mosses, birds’ eggs to bring home for him to paint. Nearby they could wander the quiet lanes and ginnels of Headingley Hill, with its grand mansions, high stone walls, and tall trees – scenes to which he would often return in his later paintings. he move marked his growing success as a full-time artist, and an escape from his early life. He was born in Leeds in 1836, in Back Park Street, a narrow lane of cottages and warehouses, the first of the six children of David and Mary Grimshaw. His father had lost his work in the cloth trade and moved from job to job, taking his growing family first to Sheffield then Norwich, where John Atkinson went to school – his only education. When he was 12 the family returned to Leeds, to the poor area of the Leylands, where his mother ran a small corner shop while his father found work with the newly-arrived Midland Railway. By age 14 John Atkinson had a job there too as a clerk, but he had begun to paint in his spare time. His strict Baptist parents disapproved –and threw his paints in the fire. He persevered, self-taught, and his work won admiration, particularly from one of the Leeds art dealers who took him under his wing and fostered his talent.

eagerly awaited and enthusiastically reviewed. When the purchase of Roundhay Park was in question he exhibited three moonlight scenes of the Park which he said he had been commissioned to paint; they were lavishly praised in the press (and remain favourites today). He was acknowledged as the master of poetic moonlight and night effects, transforming the familiar streets of Leeds into something mysterious, romantic and beautiful – Boar Lane, Park Row, the suburban lanes of Roundhay and Headingley. Harris Interiors, based just off Town Street in Rodley, has now entered its third year and has already carved out an impressive place for itself in the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom realm. “When we first opened it was quite a leap and I have to admit it was a steep learning curve”, said Kieran Harris. “Having already been part of a successful bathroom and kitchen fitting business, my dream was to build on that experience by opening Harris Interiors with a well designed and equipped showroom to s h owc a s e o u r work.” And, it has paid off! Today, after a lot of hard work, Kieran and his wife Emily have built Harris Interiors into a thriving business, with a four-strong, permanent team of qualified fitters that is busy installing bathrooms, kitchens and fitted wardrobes all around Leeds. Over the past two years they have carefully honed down their suppliers to a select group that provides quality products that are mostly British made, and always deliver on time. The showroom presents a great selection of floor

and door finishes, as well as the expected ranges of bathroom and kitchen furniture (the kitchens are manufactured in Bacup) and fixtures, including taps from Yorkshire and some great tiles from Devon. When it comes to appliances, Kieran has chosen to deal exclusively with NEFF, Bosch and CDA. But, what Kieran really enjoys is transforming spaces, delighting customers and delivering more than expected. “Our motto is ‘Making Dream Spaces a Reality’ and that’s it really”, said Kieran. “I like to keep it simple,

to improve layouts and make them more effective to suit the way the customer uses that space. Sometimes just changing the way a door opens can provide a whole new perspective on how to use a room. People often think they have to stick with the layout they have. We have

worked in all kinds of spaces and you’d be surprised the difference small touches can make.” C u s t o m e r satisfaction is at the very core of everything that Harris Interiors does. These past two years have added invaluable experience and expertise to the business and Kieran is constantly looking for new ways to delight customers. “Nothing beats the buzz of a job well done”, said Kieran. “We have a great team, quality suppliers that we can rely on, and a wealth of experience behind us. Being able to deliver even more than our customers expect is always our aim.” Take a look at Harris Interiors website – a regularly feature is ‘Job of the Month’ which will give you a feel for the quality of the design and workmanship. ichardson plays rich and successful mystery writer Andrew Wyke whose obsession with playing games is in danger of losing him everything. Matters take a surprising turn when he lures his wife’s lover Milo (Alexandrou) to his country house to take part in a specially created challenge. Nothing is what it seems in this ultimate game of cat and mouse. Perhaps the arrival of Inspector Doppler will help untangle fact from fiction, deception from truth and murderer from victim.

Anthony Shaffer’s Tony-award winning thriller ‘Sleuth’ comes to West Yorkshire Playhouse from 28th September – 15th October, with Royal Shakespeare Company actor Miles Richardson and ex-East Enders actor James Alexandrou leading the cast.

Nothing is what it seems in this ultimate game of cat and mouse “Sleuth is a Tony award-winning classic thriller which is ripe for a revival in Yorkshire”, said James Brining, Artistic Director, West Yorkshire Playhouse. “It holds the audience in an increasingly tense grip, as the friendly rivalry between Andrew and Milo becomes decidedly unfriendly. We heartily welcome back Director Giles Croft, whose production of ‘The Kite Runner’ proved so popular when it came to Leeds.” Sleuth, a co-production with Nottingham Playhouse, is in the Quarry Theatre. Art & Culture resented by Compass Festival and Live Art Bistro, this is a subtle performance that involves one audience member at a time as the performers walk through the city holding hands with a range of different people on a carefully designed route. Born out of a series of ‘holding hands experiments’ in Glasgow, with both same sex and mixed sex couples, the piece aims to challenge prejudices, and experience first hand what it is to walk in someone else’s shoes. It explores the experience of queer and minority identities within a city, and at the same time is a broader experiment into what can be learnt when two strangers share an intimate moment in public. It also asks questions of the social diversity and cultural codes within a city.

Walking:Holding is inviting people to get involved in a new experiential performance around Leeds city centre on 11th/ 12th November.

Photo: Rosie Healey

The performers or ‘hand holders’ will be local people from different sections of the community. The aim is to involve people of different ages, races, genders, sexualities and social backgrounds, and to create a rich experience for the audience. It’s about bringing very different people together to walk hand in hand in public, and hopes to encourage greater understanding and tolerance, and to open up new ways of being a public space, and of being with each other. Walking:Holding was created in Glasgow in 2011 by Rosana Cade and has since toured extensively across the UK and internationally, working with local participants as performers in each location. Whilst the form of her performance work varies, and emerges in relation to the specific process or context she is engaging with, it is firmly rooted in a queer discourse and straddles live art and activism. As part of Black History Month Leeds-based performers Joe Williams and Leah Francis of Heritage Corner present the tale of Ellen and William Craft, with performances at Ilkley Literature Festival, Kirkstall Abbey and Leeds Library William and Ellen Craft were from Georgia in the Southern United States. To escape enslavement, Ellen dressed as a white man and pretended that her husband, William, was her slave, travelling with her. In this way they headed North to freedom. The story of their escape was recounted many times in newspapers throughout Britain and was documented in their famous work ‘Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom’ (1860). They lived in

England for nineteen years before eventually returning to the United States. While in Leeds they stayed at the home of the abolitionist and writer Wilson Armistead, the author of a fascinating 1848 work ‘A Tribute to the Negro’, who registered them in the 1851 census as ‘Fugitives from Slavery in

America…’ The African American novelist William Wells Brown wrote of him: “Few English gentlemen have done more to hasten the day of the slave’s liberation than Wilson Armistead.” He also had much to say on the ‘extensive and interesting ruin of Kirkstall Abbey…’ with its ‘tranquil and pensive beauty…’ that ‘reposes in the lap of pastoral luxuriance…’ Join Heritage Corner as they bring this incredible story to life, whilst also discovering the stories of other key African-Americans visiting Victorian Leeds, such as Frederick Douglass, Henry ‘Box’ Brown and the tenacious Sarah Parker Remond. ‘Meet the Crafts’ is at Ilkley Literature Festival on Wednesday 5th October and Kirkstall Abbey Visitor Centre, in the Colonel North Room at 12pm and 2pm on Sunday 9th October and Leeds Library, 18 Commercial Street 23rd Nov.

uncture 2016 is dedicated to the very best of contemporary dance practice made with nonprofessional collaborators. Bringing together internationally renowned artists and choreographers, it is a pick-and-mix of innovative artworks, from movement installations in galleries, to intimate performances, workshops and a karaoke party! Running from Thursday 27th – Sunday 30th October, Juncture will take place at venues across the city including Yorkshire Dance and The Tetley. The festival will celebrate, champion and investigate the practice of creating high quality professional choreography with and by people who are ordinarily not seen or valued on the dancing stage; older people, people of different abilities, body types and backgrounds. Audiences can dip in and out of individual performances, and for those who want to delve deeper and explore the themes of the programme, there is a host of workshops from each of the leading artists.

This year, the biannual festival produced by Yorkshire Dance is curated by Gillie Kleiman who describes the line up as “cool, bold and uncompromising”. “The community dance movement, folk dance, YouTube dance classes and Strictly all tell us the same thing - everybody dances”, said Gillie. “This edition of Juncture brings together artworks where the role of the professional dancer is given to someone else, bringing artists, participants and their shared work into conversation about what happens when the dancing is handed over.”

Dance makers including Swedish artist Sara Lindström, internationally renowned Yorkshire choreographer Lucy Suggate, London-based choreographer Nicola Conibere, and independent conceptual dance outfit ‘Immigrants and Animals’ who will work with 75 members of the public to bring new participants right in to the heart of the festival. Joining them is experimental theatre company Quarantine with Wallflower, Dance Company Fitzgerald & Stapleton (Time Out New York Critics’ Pick), and the performing artist Grace Surman. Mark Thomas Brings The Red Shed to The Playhouse Comedian Mark Thomas brings his award-winning ‘The Red Shed’ to West Yorkshire Playhouse from Wednesday 2nd – Friday 4th November. resh from the Edinburgh Festival, where the show was a Scotsman Fringe First winner and also took The Stage Special Award, ‘The Red Shed’ is the third part in Mark’s theatrical trilogy, which began with ‘Bravo Figaro’ and ‘Cuckooed’. In The Red Shed, Mark returns to where it all began, a Labour club in Wakefield that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. As a student at Bretton Hall, Mark cut his teeth in this 47-foot long wooden shed. This was home to dissent, to organising and to progressive politics, and it was here that he became part of the struggle. A south London lad, Wakefield’s alien traditional Labour community awoke a new determination in Mark and changed his life forever. The show pieces together the club’s history, the survival of a community and how things have changed today. It’s a tale of ‘strikes, fights, dinner ladies, crap beer, good beer, pickets, placards, commies, friendship, love, history, dreams and, above all, remembering’.

When Mark first discovered The Red Shed in the mid – late 80s it was a very intense time. He discovered a unique place full of people who had done something extraordinary and been involved in fighting for rights and improving standards in industry. Certainly the people and friends he made there have informed the show but it is also very much about the present and how we got here.

Photo: Tracey Moberley

Over the years Mark has gone back to The Red Shed again and again – he has performed there, recorded for the BBC, continued to be part of its history, it is part of him. And, it’s a very northern story. Mark couldn’t praise West Yorkshire Playhouse enough for its support of northern stories and he is so proud to be part of this movement.

‘Flit’ – A Show About Migration Combining Brilliant Music and Animation t was conversations with his grandmother that got Martin Green thinking about migration. Together with other incidental conversations about changing country and how it can effect people, the idea for an extraordinary show emerged. Now, after a highly successful outing at the Edinburgh Festival, ‘Flit’ comes to the Howard Assembly Room on Saturday 29th October.

Award-winning composer and Lau accordionist, Martin has brought together Portishead’s Adrian Utley, Mogwai’s Dominic Aitchison, Becky Unthank and BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominee Adam Holmes to perform Green’s original music, with lyrics by Karine Polwart, Anaïs Mitchell, Sandy Wright and Aidan Moffat. Co-produced by Opera North, ‘Flit’ pairs masterful musical performances with fantastic stop-motion animation by Edinburghbased White Robot.

Photos: Opera North

“I was trying to get into the mindset of migration…the phenomenon of movement around the world”, said Martin. “There is no reference to any particular place or time. I rewrote people’s accounts as semi-fiction, editing as we went along. It was a difficult process for the songwriters, but I’m working with incredible people. It has been really enjoyable and a truly co-operative project. No one feels at all precious about it. “Flit also offered an opportunity to make a visual world. I wondered what people might look at as they listened to the music. I didn’t want it to be a film or pretty visuals. That’s when I thought of White Robot. Their stopmotion animation, working in fractions of a second, is breath taking.” Opera North’s involvement as coproducers has been integral. “They have been so supportive of the project”, said Martin, “providing rehearsal space and the chance to develop the work. They are very artistic people and so useful to have around – brilliant people and a really forward looking company.” Tickets (£15) are available from 0844 848 2727 or howardassemblyroom.co.uk

Unusual Cases from Sixty Years as a Leeds Solicitor Jerry Pearlman’s particular interest in the environment brought him into contact with a number of Yorkshire personalities, including William Bunting, the great battler for the preservation of Thorne wastes; Bob Leakey who fought against attempts to spoil the Yorkshire Dales with bad development; and Keith Lockyer, the first chairman of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. “All three were great characters and had done considerable research into the legislation (going back centuries in some cases) which was designed to protect the local environment”, said Jerry. “They were prepared to battle alone in court case after court case, but each eventually accepted, usually reluctantly, that they needed legal help in coping with the ‘system’. This is where I came in, trying to hold back their impetuosity whilst letting them show their passion to the court.” In ‘Tales from an Enviromental Lawyer’, Jerry Pearlman also tells of another amazing case which came his way as a very young, inexperienced solicitor, when he was asked to act for a number of tribes in Uganda who were endeavouring to protect their historic land rights. It involved speaking at a hearing of Privy Council, negotiating with Government Ministers and travelling in rural Uganda to see what

land rights were actually involved. A meeting with a witch doctor had surprising results!. Published at £6.99 (postage £1.65), by Beecroft Publications, Waterloo Lodge, 72 Waterloo Lane, LS13 2JF 0113 257 6232, info@beecroftpublications. co.uk

Downsizers Invited to Use Charity’s Service The Leeds and Moortown Furniture Store is asking local estate agents to help them support some of the city’s neediest residents by making downsizers aware of the service it offers. The charity collects unwanted furniture and then supplies it to people in need through requests from a raft of voluntary and statutory referral agencies. “This year, our thirtieth, we will be collecting and then delivering more than 6,000 items of donated furniture – beds, sofas, kitchen tables, cots etc.”, said John Sherbourne, Chair of Trustees. “Recently it struck us that as so many people are downsizing, there must be an awful lot of surplus furniture out there which we could make good use of. As estate agents come face to face with ‘downsizers’, we’re simply asking them to pass our contact details on to them.” The Leeds and Moortown Furniture Store Tel: 0113 273 9727, www.leedsandmoortown

The group will have dedicated support from their community fundraiser as well as a full kit of fundraising materials and resources to help spread the word about Marie Curie services and activities.

“We are looking for enthusiastic people with a broad range of skills to help us with our fundraising activities in North Leeds”, said Jen Aspinall, Community Fundraiser. “We need as many helpers as possible, so if you think you’ve got a couple of hours a month that you’d be able to give to support the Marie Curie nursing service, please get in touch.” All of the money raised by the fundraising group will help to fund the Marie Curie Nursing Service, which has ten nurses in Leeds who care for people living with terminal illness and provide expert care, guidance and support for them and their families. These services

are provided free of charge, however it costs £19,000 a year to fund one nurse. If you think you have a few hours to spare and would like to get involved, or would like to know more about the fundraising group, please contact Jen Aspinall Community Fundraiser on 01274 386 190, Jennifer.aspinall@ mariecurie.org.uk

Finally! We made it to Jazz Night at The Granary Restaurant. As this is a once a month event (last Friday of the month), we kept forgetting to book in time! he Granary is run by the charity Caring For Life at Crag House Farm on Old Otley Road, Cookridge. It serves lovely breakfasts, lunches and excellent afternoon teas six days a week, and two special a la carte evenings once a month – one of these being Jazz Night. Opened in 2008, the building is built around a wonderful old 17th Century barn with all the gnarly old beams exposed. It’s a lovely space and there was a great ambiance with the Chris White Jazz Trio playing classic, familiar tunes – though, I have to say, some of Chris’s jokes got more of a groan than a laugh! But, on to food! The starters were excellent – Grilled Garlic and Lime Prawn (huge!) Skewers with garlic aioli, and Goats Cheese, Roast Beetroot and Pine Nut Salad with a sherry vinegar dressing. Other choices were a Ham Hock and Carrot Terrine, and a Caramelised Onion, Sundried Tomato, Aubergine and Basil tart. Choosing was not easy!

Our main course was Grilled Trout with Warm Tomato and Bacon Salsa, and a tasty Spinach, Ricotta and Roast Vegetable Lasagna with Rocket. There was also Sirloin Steak (home grown, of course) with Green Peppercorn Sauce, Fish and Chips, a Double Bacon and Blue Cheeseburger, and Herbed Chicken with Fennel, Orange, Feta and Watercress Salad. The desserts were fabulous too – Sticky Prune Pudding and Toffee Sauce, and Elderflower and Lime Cheesecake. If these are any indication as to what is on offer at their popular Afternoon Teas I might well be taking the odd afternoon off to indulge! There was a short but sensible selection of wines, and it was good to see local beer on the drinks menu too. All in all it was a lovely evening – good food, great atmosphere, excellent friendly service in a rather unique setting. What more could you ask for? The Jazz Night menu is featured on the website - so you can see what you have to look forward to before you book. Crag House Farm is the HQ of Christian Charity Caring For Life, which supports disadvantaged and vulnerable people in Leeds. The farm hosts 17 therapeutic daytime projects, and Caring For Life also offers residential homes, and support in the community. The farm is made up of 125 acres of mostly agricultural land for its Longhorn cattle, Lleyn sheep, horses and poultry. The Farm Shop and Garden Nurseries are also well worth a visit. George & Joseph Celebrates Third Anniversary eorge & Joseph, Leeds’ only specialist cheesemonger, is celebrating the third anniversary of opening its shop in Chapel Allerton. Founded by Stephen Fleming in 2012, the business initially focused on farmers’ markets, before opening on Regent Street in 2013. Turnover has more than doubled year on year, and the business now employs three part-time staff. The shop also sells a selection of local ales, wines and spirits “I’m delighted with the success of the business”, said Stephen. “We have built up a fantastic customer base of

cheese lovers and the local business community in Chapel Allerton has been really supportive. There is a great food offering in the area, with us the butcher, greengrocer and fishmonger alongside us. We have gradually expanded the range of cheeses we stock from 25 to over 60, including 25 Yorkshire varieties – some produced as little as three miles from the shop.

“We’re getting our Christmas plans in place earlier than ever this year, and we are looking at some exciting new ventures to expand the business.” For further information contact Stephen on 07968 543153, or stephen@georgeandjoseph.co.uk

New Park Planned for Moortown

The old Yorkshire Bank Sportsground on Allerton Grove/Shadwell Lane is Moortown’s secret haven! It feels more like a small pocket of countryside than a development site in North Leeds. or 15 years it was threatened with housing development. A group of local residents (now the Moortown Community Group) vigorously campaigned for the site to be retained as a community green space in Moortown. A few years ago the site was sold to a developer who was prepared to work with the community and now 70% of the site has been designated as a park. Leeds City Council will take ownership shortly and it is expected that the Parks and Countryside Dept will start work on creating the new park later in the year. A ‘Friends of Moortown Park’ group has been established to work

alongside Parks to create this new community park. They are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join the group. You may be retired and looking for a worthwhile new project or you may be a young person making sure the new park will have something for you! Young or old, however much or little time you can offer, they would love to hear from you. To keep updated with news and forthcoming events, like their facebook page@moortownparkfriends or follow them on twitter and instagram @ moortownpkleeds Keep an eye on the Facebook page for Autumn and Winter events.

The market will have a different theme each month too. As part of Roundhay and Oakwood Festival in October, there will be live music, plus children’s arts and crafts. December’s Winter Wonderland market will be a wonderful Christmas family event, with Christmas carols, Xmas inspired food and drinks..... plus a special visit from Santa! New Website for Family History Group The Wharfedale Family History Group has just launched its revamped website. Designed by Stephen Miller, the site now gives far more options for people to find out about their ancestors.

t Anne’s Community Services recently launched Shared Lives – a new scheme whereby people can provide a home for adults with learning difficulties, and they are currently recruiting carers for this role. Shared Lives is designed to support adult clients with learning disabilities who find it hard, or impossible, to live on their own. The scheme matches clients with approved Shared Lives carers, who share their family and community life, providing care and support and bonding with the person. Sometimes people use a Shared Lives scheme as a way of learning the skills they need to live independently, and to help them put down roots in their area before moving into a place of their own. Clients report feeling settled, valued and like they belong for the first time in their lives. They make friends and get involved in clubs, activities and volunteering, often for the first time. Half of the people using Shared Lives went on their first ever holiday, as a result of the support and companionship of their Shared Lives carer.

All Shared Lives carers go through an approval process that meets the requirements set out for all Shared Lives Services under the Health and Social Care Act 2008. Potential carers attend comprehensive training and undergo a robust assessment at home. The assessment covers background, experience, values and attitudes, knowledge and skills, and motivation. Shared Lives are currently recruiting people of all ages and backgrounds to join the scheme and support adults with learning disabilities. Single people, couples, or families with children can all apply. Carers are fully supported by St. Anne’s and they match people who suit each other’s circumstances. They are looking for positive people who have a spare room and would like to share their home and family with someone else. Carers receive ongoing support and training, work from home, and receive a fee of over £350 per week, tax free. For further information, please contact St Anne’s Community Services on 0113 281 6967 or email Jonathan. hainsworth@st-annes.org.uk

Many people have recorded information regarding those who died in the First World War, but the group has gone further by creating a database of those recorded on the memorials from all wars. At present this is searchable by memorial but will soon be upgraded to be searchable by name. The group can also advise on how to take this research further – such as finding gravestones, medals and soldiers’ records. Some of the plaques have required a little detective work to find them, often being hidden away in buildings no longer in use. Membership is now approaching 400 and from all over the world. Members will soon be able to download many published records and submit articles. The group has already published over 300 books and CDs relating to Wharfedale and the Western Dales towards the Lancashire boundary. The group meets at the Salem Hall, Burley in Wharfedale on the first Thursday of each month, 7.30pm, and at the Village Institute in Threshfield on the third Saturday of each month at 2.30pm. For more information on the speakers and events please visit www. wharfedalefhg.org.uk

he Disabled Youth Exchange between Leeds and Germany has been running for over 46 years. Started by one Leeds Lion, it is now supported not only by Leeds Lions, but also Leeds Skyrack, Knaresborough, Harrogate and Otley Lions, who all provided days out. Young people with disabilities are brought over from the Bad Sooden-Allendorf area of Germany by the Lions Club there, and they in turn have invited disabled young people from Leeds back there. This exchange offers the chance of a holiday and an opportunity to make new friends. While here, they enjoy visits to York Railway Museum, Bolton Abbey, Brimham Rocks, The Royal Armouries, and Knaresborough, where they went boating. They also met the Mayor of Leeds who showed them round the Civic Hall.

Songs and Stories of Courage and Conscience ne hundred years ago, Clifford Cartwright from Leeds was 21 and working in the print industry. First World War casualty rates were rocketing, and the Government introduced compulsory conscription. Clifford, a member of the Churches of Christ, took his religion seriously and realising the futility of war and its opposition to his beliefs, he decided to oppose the war and to refuse conscription regardless of the consequences. As a result, he was arrested and imprisoned with other conscientious objectors (COs) in Richmond Castle.

Their fragile graffiti, showing what inspired them, can still be seen on their cell walls. Some were motivated by religion, others were socialists, opposed to the war for political reasons and, seeing imperial powers grabbing land and arms manufacturers making profits, they wrote and sang ‘The Red Flag’. There is a whole range of songs associated with resisting the 1914 - 1918

war. The Peace Museum in Bradford even has a 1916 copy of a ‘Conscientious Objector’s Song Book’ and many of the songs continue to inspire. There were over seventeen thousand conscientious objectors in the First World War. Many faced terrible conditions in prisons and work camps. Clifford Cartwright was taken to France. On the way they sang at the station to keep up their spirits, they sang on the train and sang more on the boat. They were tortured by the army, but stuck firmly to their belief that the war was wrong. They even faced a death sentence, subsequently commuted to hard labour. Back in Britain many were sent to brutal work camps. Clifford spent the rest of the war in Winchester prison, an Aberdeen work camp, then Wakefield prison. The decisions of ‘patriotic’ politicians from 1914 led to millions of people dying for a few metres of mud. Perhaps the conscientious objectors got it right – that one’s patriotic duty was to resist the war and to stand up for justice and peace. On 6th November, the Leeds-based Free Range Choir will perform the songs that inspired war resistance in 19141918 at Lidgett Park Methodist Church at 3pm. The music will be interspersed with a presentation on the diverse stories of conscientious objectors.

News From Your Councillors Cllr

DAN COHEN Alwoodley

As I sit writing this column we are having some of the warmest September weather the UK has seen for the past 50 years – so it feels odd to be writing about grit bins! But, before we know it Winter will be upon us and the Alwoodley grit bin collection will come into its own. It is outrageous that Leeds City Council does not provide grit bins in

all the locations required. The majority of grit bins in Alwoodley were provided by Neil, Peter and I, using the limited funds we are provided with to do an array of work in Alwoodley. As ward councillors we are only too happy to use this money to ensure that, on those icy mornings, as many of us as possible have access to a grit bin to ensure our roads are usable. The downside to our having provided these bins is that it is also our responsibility to fill them each year. Following a fairly mild Winter last year, many of the bins still have a good supply of grit. Those that need filling will be filled in the coming weeks. However, we have only been able to set aside £10,000 for this purpose, this is enough to fill every grit bin in our ward once and provide one refill. I mention this for two reasons – firstly please use the grit sparingly. Highways assure me that many of us put more grit down than is needed. Secondly, there is a small number of

residents who believe it is OK to use this grit on their drives – this is not, in fact, OK. Now to a matter that has been occupying my inbox in recent weeks – the resurfacing of The Avenue started in July (three months later than planned because Northern Gas Networks needed to do work there). The contractors have started on the pavements and will then move on to the carriageway itself. Anyone who uses this road will know how desperately this work is needed. You will also have seen that the speed at which the work is progressing would make a snail look like Usain Bolt. Your three councillors are constantly pressing highways to get this job done properly and as quickly as possible. Remember, for any and all local queries, your Alwoodley councillors are always here to help.

Cllr

REBECCA CHARLWOOD Moortown & Meanwood Ward

ince being elected, I have been fortunate to gain a wide range of experience, holding various positions in the Council. I recently became the Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adults and Chair of the Leeds Health and Wellbeing Board, giving me the opportunity to drive improvements of the many healthcare issues I am passionate about. As we approach Winter and the temperature drops, it is pivotal that we continue to support the most vulnerable people in our communities, particularly those over 65, which is why Leeds City Council continues to invest in minimising the effects of cold weather and cold homes.

The Warmth for Wellbeing service (funded by the Council and Leeds South, East and North Clinical Commissioning Groups) is just one example of the partnership work being undertaken in the city to address some of the risks associated with cold or damp homes. This service is free and aims to offer support and advice on how to save money on energy bills. Some of the services offered include free repairs to existing heating systems, as well as servicing of heating appliances. Further information on the Warmth for Wellbeing service can be found by calling Freephone 0808 168 3547, or visiting www.thegreendoctors.org, www.care-repair-leeds.org.uk Communities are at the heart of everything that we do and I believe we can achieve the ambitious vision we have set for Leeds by working together. Groups in Moortown, such as Moor Allerton Elderly Care (MAECare), highlight the key support so important to older people in the community. I am

pleased that the Council recognises this and is supporting local organisations via the Winter Friends Programme, and training groups like MAECare on the most effective interventions to keep well in the Winter.

he Little Owl, the smallest native owl in the UK, was originally introduced from Europe in the nineteenth century, to help control agricultural pests. The first introduction project in Yorkshire failed, but two others in Kent and Northamptonshire were successful, and it is now a widespread resident species. It is small and plump with a rather flat head and a short tail, and its body and wings are grey-brown, heavily spotted with white. It has large distinctive black eyes with yellow irises, beneath lines of white feathers which

resemble eyebrows, and which give it a rather stern look. Most Little Owls nest on agricultural land, but they can also be found in a variety of habitats, including mature parkland, orchards

and quarries. They hunt at dusk and before dawn, but can also be seen during the day perching on a branch, old wall or even a telegraph pole. They feed mainly on insects and invertebrates such as Photo: beetles and earthworms, but Ben will also take small mammals Andrew and birds. RSPBThey nest in holes in images. trees, about three metres off com the ground, and sometimes in clefts in rock faces or holes in buildings. Little Owls can be hard to see because of their nocturnal habits, but a good place to look locally is Rodley Nature Reserve, where they have recently bred. Leeds RSPB Group

There is plenty to keep us busy in the garden this month, but do take time to enjoy the autumn colour by visiting some of our lovely local parks and gardens.

Asters of all kinds ensure that Summer colour goes on

Lawns Keep on mowing your lawn regularly as the grass keeps on growing whilst temperatures are mild. This is a good time for lawn repairs, such as re-seeding any bare patches.

Bulbs Tulips, Narcissi, Crocuses or Alliums, everyone loves bulbs! Get planting yours now to ensure a colourful Spring.

Flowers Hardy annuals are valuable components of the garden, bringing colour for months and providing cut flowers for the house. You can sow seed right now directly into the ground as autumn-sown plants will flower earlier. Good examples include Cornflowers, Poached-egg plant, annual Poppies and Larkspur.

Borders Overgrown or overcrowded perennial plants can be lifted and divided into smaller sections at this time of the year. You can re-plant them in groups and they will reward you by producing lots of healthy growth next year, and you will have plenty of spares to share with friends.

Leaves It’s leaf time again! Keep fallen leaves raked up and use them to make leaf mould which is a wonderful soil conditioner. An easy method is to put them all into a black plastic bin liner and leave it in a corner of the garden for a few months for the leaves to rot down. Pierce a few holes in the bag to allow air in.

Autumn Visits Many public gardens look spectacular in their autumn finery and this is the month to get out and enjoy them. Check opening times before you set off as many reduce their hours in October, and don’t forget to take your camera!

Tracy Foster - www.tracyfostergardendesign.co.uk

Veg On the veg plot you can sow seeds of winter lettuces, broad beans and lambs lettuce as well as planting out autumn onion sets and garlic cloves. It’s a great time to put in new Asparagus and Rhubarb plants too. Make sure you harvest any remaining tomatoes, beans, carrots, beetroots, peas, squashes and pumpkins before the first frosts arrive.

Rudbeckia – stunning yellow daisy flowers, many with a chocolate brown centre.

FILM

REVIEW

DON’T BREATHE DIRECTED BY: FEDE ALVAREZ STARRING: STEPHEN LANG, JANE LEVY, DYLAN MINNETTE

CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 88 MINS resh from his well-received ‘Evil Dead’ remake, director Fede Alvarez tones down the gore and cranks up the tension with this taut and effective horror. Scary movie fans have been well catered for over the last few years with many feeling that the genre is enjoying a serious creative renaissance. ‘Don’t Breathe’ provides further strong evidence for that assessment. The film has elements in common with a few of the more positively reviewed recent examples; it shares its gloomy, run down Michigan ghost town setting with ‘It Follows’, its claustrophobic single location and trapped protagonists with ‘Green Room’. With its home invasion gone awry theme it also calls to mind David Fincher’s 2002 feature, ‘Panic Room’. The set up here involves a trio of young house breakers with their eyes on a big score. In a dilapidated, virtually deserted neighborhood lives a blind, aged war veteran who is known to be sitting on a fortune. The three burglars imagine their sightless victim to be an easy mark and the robbery a sure-fire route to easy money. To say they’ve underestimated the blind man and misjudged the scenario would be putting it mildly.

Stylistic touches such as the accentuated sound design and the creepily prowling camerawork play up the atmosphere of sensory disorientation or hyperawareness

Upon entering the house things take a turn for the catastrophic pretty much immediately and what ensues is a heartstopping, tense game of cat and mouse. ‘Don’t Breathe’ is the kind of film that offers the sort of exhilaration you experience with a theme park ride and the thrills and spills here are efficiently delivered. When the power dynamic shifts and the robbers are put on the back foot Stephen Lang’s blind man becomes a formidable, threatening presence and every misstep, creaky floorboard or barely suppressed gasp is potentially fatal. Working with a relatively limited budget, Alvarez shows himself to be a resourceful film-maker with some nifty tricks up his sleeve. There’s inventive use of the location’s architecture and stylistic touches which play up the atmosphere of sensory disorientation or hyper-awareness, such as the accentuated sound design and the creepily prowling camerawork. If I’m to quibble with the picture at all it’s on possibly questionable grounds; if a film such as this is to qualify as

horror (and, as a genre director, this would appear to be Alvarez’s raison d’etre) the chief antagonist or ‘big bad’ must be made out to be somehow monstrous. In this case, we’re clearly to consider the blind man to be the monster of the piece but the means by which this is established I find a tad dubious. After all, prior to the break-in we learn that The Blind Man (that’s actually the character’s name in the credits, I don’t know what else to call him) has been a recluse since his young daughter was tragically killed by a drunk driver and he came by his wealth through an out of court settlement with the driver’s family. At this point he appears considerably more sympathetic than the three snotty kids who break into his house with the objective of robbing an elderly man with a disability. In the interests of avoiding spoilers, I won’t say exactly how our sympathies are re-aligned but suffice it to say that around the end of the second act the film makes a dramatic swerve and a leap of warped logic into some pretty icky territory which leaves a bad taste in the mouth. That aside, however, ‘Don’t Breathe’ is generally a lot of fun, if one of your ideas of fun is a sensation like your nervous system being wound up like a tightly coiled spring.

A Bond girl, a European première, and rare and iconic films from across four decades, take centre stage at the National Media Museum’s Widescreen Weekend, from 13th – 16th October. enny Hanley, from 1969 movie ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, will give her insider’s story of filming on the set of one of cinema’s most successful franchises and introduce a digitally re-mastered version of OHMSS featuring George Lazenby. “For many years the National Media Museum’s Widescreen Weekend has screened classic movies as they should be screened - big and wide”, said Sir Christopher Frayling. “This year, the festival has tracked down some rarities – The Agony and the Ecstasy, Cinerama films, Hitchcock’s Vertigo in 70 mm - and is also screening some old favourites, like ‘The Innocents’ the spookiest ghost story ever filmed. “This festival is a must for serious filmgoers. Forget about watching films on phones and computer screens and even HD televisions - there’s no substitute for WIDESCREEN.”

The National Media Museum’s curved Cinerama screen hosts the European premiere of the digitally restored version of The Golden Head (1964), introduced by singer/ actor Jess Conrad, who stars in the film. Also showing is a digital restoration of Cinerama’s Russian Adventure (1966) plus an original print of the film that showcased the technology in the 1950s - This Is Cinerama (1952). The festival will provide thrills, comedy and music with large format versions of a range of classics including a 30th anniversary screening of Aliens (1986); the original Ghostbusters (1984) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). On Saturday 15th October, a panel discussion on Virtual Reality and the future of immersive cinema technology is accompanied by demos and films, including the Emmy Award-winning Notes on Blindness (2016). Asian Women Cricket Team Bowls Out Domestic Violence

he UK’s first all Asian women’s cricket team recently took to the field in Headingley to ‘bowl out domestic violence’. Led by cricket icon Salma Bi, the ‘Asian Inspiration’ side took on the Combined Services women for the White Ribbon Trophy, during a day of cricket devoted to raising awareness of domestic violence and abuse. The occasion marked a new chapter in the game with the English Cricket Board (ECB) aiming to develop cricket within South Asian communities. The event was organised by Halima Khan and Ikram Butt, co founders of Cricket Beyond the Boundary Line (CBBL), which uses sporting initiatives as a platform for campaigns that facilitate peace and equality around the globe. Endorsed by the ECB and Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the day also featured 80 junior players demonstrating ‘quick cricket’ as well as Bollywood dancers,

Bhangra drummers and an Army band. The inspirational women’s team batted out their overs, however the game ended in a tie due to the rain and both teams shared the trophy. “Today marks the start of a new era for cricket empowering women and men from diverse communities to take to the crease and speak out on bowling out domestic violence”, said Halima Khan, Director of CBBL. “As we move forwards we would like the ECB to support more of these initiatives which aim to inspire communities at a grassroots level and BEM (British ethnic minority) women to play the game and get involved in the game’s administration.” West Indies international player Jonathan Carter, Ex- England International Sajid Mahmood, ECB Independent board director, Lord Patel of Bradford, Greg Mulholland MP, Mark BurnsWilliamson (West Yorkshire Police Crime Commissioner) and Dr Hanif Malik OBE, were all present to watch the proceedings, as

well as special guest Jackie Janmohamed, President of Kenya Cricket and the first female to head up an international cricket board. “This was a great opportunity to raise awareness of violence against women and develop women in sporting roles at the same time”, said former Rugby League and Union international Ikram Butt. “We aim to make this an annual fixture for both the men’s and women’s game, as well as expanding opportunities for people from diverse communities to take part in cricket. “I would like to thank all of those involved. Sponsors, supporters, players and organisers all played their part in getting out this vital message”, added Ikram, who is also the Sport Campaigns Manager for White Ribbon. Also at The Playhouse from 1st – 5th November is Kneehigh Theatre’s ‘946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips’, based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel which explodes everything we thought we knew about the D-Day landings. Suitable for age 7+. Kneehigh uses music, puppetry and foolishness to tell this tale of war, prejudice and love. It is a little known story of the rehearsal of the D-Day landings, and of the 946 people who were killed during Operation Tiger at Slapton Sands in Devon in 1944. Imagine being told to leave your home…imagine American soldiers occupying your house and land…imagine being 12 and angry, with only a cat to tell your secrets to. At once, tender, political and romantic, this production speaks to all ages, revealing the secrets the US and

British government tried to keep quiet. Northern Ballet’s latest children’s ballet is ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and it will have its world première at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from 24th – 29th October before touring extensively. Choreographed by Nicola Gervasi, currently a Junior Soloist with the company, Goldilocks is a delightful production lasting about 40 minutes and featuring live music by John Longstaff, set design by Jane Cecchi, and costumes by Kim Brassley and Carley Marsh. Tickets for Goldilocks & the Three Bears (£6 adults/ £4.50 children) are available from 0113 220 8008 or online at theatreleeds.com

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown & Roundhay areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
