VINCENZO LUIGI TOMASSO (1862-1944) MUSICIAN AND BARREL-ORGAN MAKER

For forty years Luigi Tomasso ran a unique business in Hunslet making barrel-organs, mostly for hire by street performers. When his workshop closed in 1942 it was one of only four left in the country and its long decline marked the end of an era – the disappearance of the ‘tingalary man’ from the streets of Leeds, churning out his popular tunes, sometimes accompanied by a monkey or a small appealing child to win people’s hearts and pennies. Luigi made a successful life for himself in Leeds, building a business and a family, and burying a childhood which had been marked by poverty, extreme hardship and endurance – twice he had walked a thousand miles across Europe to reach this promised land of opportunity and security. e was born in Cassino, Italy, between Rome and Naples. When he was only eight, he was rounded up with his little sister and other poor orphan children by a master, a ‘padrone’, to walk to England to work with Italian street musicians, who used the children, however tiny, to sing or play an instrument, and beg for money. The padrone drove the children hard – Luigi remembered him throwing one sick child down a well so he would not hold them up. But the padrone was refused entry to England and the children were deported back to Cassino: this long-established traffic in ‘child slaves’ had become a public scandal which the British and Italian governments tried to suppress. Luigi was determined to seek a better life. When he was twelve, he set off walking from Cassino back across the Alps, through France to Calais, paying his way by playing the accordion. He managed to save enough for the fare to Folkestone, and made his way to London where he found work in the famous Chiappa organ works in Clerkenwell, in what was called ‘Little Italy’. Here he learnt the complexities of building a barrel-organ: how to set the many thousands of pins in the cylinder to create a range of tunes. It required enormous skill, patience and musical knowledge – the quality of the music produced depended on the accurate placing of the pins, an art in itself. When new tunes were introduced all the pins had to be reset from scratch. Meanwhile he was welcomed into the Italian émigré community in London, and in 1885, when he was 23, he married Dominica Capaldi, whose family were all musicians from Italy. Now he was ready to start his own business. The couple seem to have travelled around for some time before deciding to settle

in Leeds, where he set up his organ works around the turn of the century in a workshop off the York Road, near where they lived. As the business expanded, moving in the ‘30s to Bowman Lane, he diversified into band organs and mechanical pianos, but the core of the business remained making and repairing barrel organs, lavishly decorated, for daily hire to the street performers – in their heyday 50 were rented out at two shillings a day and

taken round the streets, sometimes pulled by a donkey. Many of the performers, the organgrinders, were well-known characters, who sang and danced as well as turning their organs. Some were comic turns: one was said to win bets by fitting a pint mug into his mouth – after removing his false teeth! They could be viewed as maddening nuisances (as Charles Dickens thought) but many, particularly the poor, appreciated the cheerful, familiar music (popular songs, opera arias, hymns) they brought to the grey streets of the Leeds slums. Luigi and Dominica had nine surviving children, and many worked in the organ works or took up other businesses, including music. There was a family orchestra, and Luigi himself still played the accordion. But by the late 1930s, with the advance of radio, the era of the barrel-organ and street music was coming to an end. The works closed in 1942; the remaining organs were auctioned or chopped up for firewood. Luigi Tomasso himself died two years later, aged 81. He had made a good life from his hard beginnings. Today street music is not entirely dead – in and around Leeds the sound of an accordion still brightens the air and can bring a smile to the face, a lift to the step. What stories of arduous journeys may lie behind this music?

by Summer 2018. his new build is the biggest capital investment that the College has ever embarked upon and has been two years in development. It marks the start of an exciting journey for the College, with plans in place to become the only specialist arts university in the North of England. A five storey, 6,000 square metres building, designed by architects DLA Design, will be built on the current car park at Blenheim Walk. It will accommodate art, design and performance facilities for increased student numbers and new courses.

The current Blenheim Walk campus has reached capacity so the new building will ensure that the College can meet the demand for places and the future expectations of students. The new building

Fund will allow the College to create a more diverse mix of educational courses, including the introduction of BA (Hons) Filmmaking and BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance in 2018. Specialist facilities will include a 230seat auditorium, music, film and photography studios, and a larger specialist arts library. There will also be an atrium-style entrance with a public exhibition gallery and coffee shop, and an enterprise centre which will also allow the College to engage more fully with regional businesses, and the wider communities of Leeds, as part of its employability agenda for students and alumni. The building will have many sustainable features including solar energy panels and an urban roof garden; and will achieve a high BREEAM rating. “As we move forward with our purposebuilt expansion, and add new courses to our portfolio, we will attract more students to the city offering them a greater diverse mix of creative courses”, said Professor Simone Wonnacott, Principal. “Our new build project coincides with our application to become a university, which will see the College becoming the only specialist arts university in the North of England.”

The Leeds Fund was established by Le e d s Community Foundation to make a positive change in the communities of Leeds that need it most.

A new initiative for the city, The Leeds Fund accepts contributions from individuals and companies wanting to support their city. These donations are then distributed in the form of grants to local community groups and charities – from small amounts to host community street parties, to large strategic grants that address big issues facing the city. In 2017/18, the Fund’s priority for large grants will focus on helping people living with mental health support needs. By 2020, The Leeds Fund aims to distribute a minimum of £500,000 each year in support of community projects that address a wide range of issues. Jack Rooke: Good Grief Jack Rooke’s critically acclaimed ‘Good Grief’ is coming to Seven Arts on Friday 28th April.

ack took ‘Good Grief’ to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2015, where it received an array of four and five star reviews. The show blends comedy, storytelling and film to explore how we treat the bereaved, whilst challenging proposed welfare cuts for grieving families, and celebrating finding happiness after tragedy. With a coffin full of sympathy snacks, Rooke and his Nan invite audiences to the happiest town in Britain where Dad’s dead and the only thing to eat is lasagna.

Rooke was commissioned by BBC Comedy to adapt Good Grief for BBC Radio 4 and he’s currently filming his debut TV documentary series ‘Happy Man’ for BBC Three, as part of a mental health season. He is the resident on-air expert in mental health and bereavement for BBC Radio 1, frequently heard on Radio 1’s Surgery, and has been featured in documentaries like ‘R1’s Guide to Happiness’ and Clara Amfo’s ‘Running With Grief’. He also hosts the Guardian Literary Institute at Camp Bestival as well as The Arts Amphitheatre at Bestival.

Adel Players Present Arthur Miller’s ‘Broken Glass’ The award-winning amateur drama company, Adel Players, will present Arthur Miller’s ‘Broken Glass’ from Wednesday 26th – Saturday 29th April, 7.30pm at Adel Memorial Hall, Church Lane, Adel LS16 8DE. Written in 1994, the play is set in Brooklyn in November 1938 at the time of Kristallnacht, when marauding Nazi mobs in Germany broke windows, burned synagogues, looted Jewish owned stores and humiliated Jewish residents. It centres on a Jewish couple, Sylvia and Phillip Gellburg, who, after years of marriage come to realise that they hardly know each other. Phillip, obsessed with work and his desire to assimilate, has little time for his wife. When Sylvia develops a mysterious paralysis after reading newspaper reports of Kristallnacht, local GP Harry Hyman is called in. He realises that Sylvia is traumatised by the horrific news from Germany and soon begins to uncover the deceptions and hostilities that Philip and Sylvia have buried beneath the façade of a happy marriage. In ‘Broken Glass’ Miller deals not only with his personal experience of prejudice against Jews living in 20th Century America, but also with that of any immigrant group struggling with rejection and misunderstanding. He entwines this with a story about fragmented personal lives mirrored by a world on the verge of collapse. A play with obvious relevance for our times, ‘tickets (£8) are available from boxoffice@adel-players.org.uk or on the night.

Opera North Turns Humber Bridge Into Epic Sound Walk

he installation is an adventure in sound featuring the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North. It is an original piece of music heard through headphones during a walk across the bridge, alongside the resonances of the bridge, its weather and traffic. Composed by Norwegian trumpeter and contemporary jazz musician Arve Henriksen, electronic musician Jan Bang and guitarist Eivind Aarset, it mixes their music with orchestral and choral music and field recordings made at the Humber Bridge by sound artist Jez Riley French. ‘The Height of the Reeds’ is a unique audio experience, designed to be listened to during a walk across the bridge’s 2,220-metre span – the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world that is possible to cross on foot. It uncovers the hidden sounds of the bridge and its surrounding natural environment of river and fens, pairing these with music that is both atmospheric and epic. It also contains poetry by Norwegian poet Nils Christian Moe-Repstad read by Maureen Lipman and Barrie Rutter, and narration recorded by a pupil from Bude Park Primary School, where Opera North has been delivering a Singing School programme over the last three years. The Height of the Reeds launches on Saturday 1 April with a weekend of timed group walks with added live interventions, and will be available for the following month. Visitors need to collect a headset on arrival at the bridge to activate the unique sonic experience that unfolds as they walk the length of the bridge. Tickets are free from Monday 3rd – Sunday 30th April. Tickets for the opening weekend (Saturday 1st April /Sunday 2nd April) are priced at £7.50, which includes additional live interventions and some treats along the way. Booking in advance is advised as the number of headsets available is limited. Box office: 01482 30 2017, hull2017.co.uk

Authors Turn Debut Novel into Trilogy t’s said novelists should write what they know, and two friends have certainly done that with their debut novel. Susan Pape and Sue Featherstone have co-written ‘A Falling Friend’ – a story about two women who have been friends for years. But for Susan and Sue, both former journalists turned academics, their first novel brings together not just friendship, but the world of local media and university life. The pair met while job sharing in a Leeds PR office – then both went on to teach journalism, Susan at Leeds Trinity University and Sue at Sheffield Hallam. They collaborated on two journalism textbooks: ‘Newspaper Journalism: A Practical Introduction’ and ‘Feature Writing: A Practical Introduction’ – both staples on the

reading list of journalism degrees. They then decided it would be fun to write a novel. ‘A Falling Friend’ was published last year and a sequel will appear in August, and the two women are now writing the final part of what has become a trilogy. The novels follow the lives of two friends: Teri,

who always seems to make the wrong choices, and Lee, who’s always there to catch her. “With most books the central storyline is ‘boy meets girl’, but we wanted to do something less traditional”, said Susan, who lives in Menston. “What’s interesting about Teri and Lee is that, ultimately, they’re the most important people in each other’s lives – while men come and go, they’re constant fixtures for one another. It is a story about the women’s friendship – but with lots of twists.” The first novel ends on a life-changing cliffhanger, which the pair resolved by writing a sequel – but that too has a surprise ending. There was nothing for it but to write a third – and final – part of the story. Susan and Sue were invited to talk about A Falling Friend at Ilkley Literature Festival Fringe last October, and have discussed their writing with book clubs, and various other groups and events across Yorkshire. ‘Disobedient Bodies’ will see one of the most innovative contemporary fashion designers responding to The Hepworth’s impressive collection of modern British art. “This is a rare and exciting opportunity for me to bring together some of the works of art and fashion that have long inspired my own creative work”, said Jonathan, “and to see what happens when these objects rub up against each other.”

Pictured: The Thinleys, 2015 © Jamie Hawkesworth

An introductory gallery will emulate a working environment offering a glimpse of the sources that have fuelled Anderson’s creative practice. Henry Moore’s Reclining Figure (1936) will be presented against a series of black & white photographs by Jamie Hawkesworth. Shot in collaboration with Anderson, the models are covered in knit fabric, turning them into sculptural shapes reminiscent of Moore’s recumbent forms.

Textiles will also be used to create a series of rooms that will offer a backdrop to juxtapositions between sculptures and design pieces. Visitors will see how artists and designers have reimagined the body – especially Hepworth and Moore who lie at the heart of Wakefield’s collection – and discover more about Anderson’s own creative vision. Figurative works by modern British artists will also be shown, including Hans

Arp, Louise Bourgeois, Constantin Brancusi, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Alberto Giacometti, Sarah Lucas, Dorothea Tanning and Rebecca Warren. These will be brought into dialogue with pieces by fashion designers who have similarly reconceived body form – from Anne-Marie Beretta, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Rei Kawakubo, to Helmut Lang, Yves Saint Laurent and Issey Miyake, as well as garments from Anderson’s notorious A/W 2013 collection. At the heart of the exhibition will be a ‘living’ sculptural environment, where knitted garments, designed by Anderson, will create an immersive and tactile experience and visitors will be encouraged to transform their bodies into abstract forms and interact with the exhibition. This is an important element of Anderson’s vision for the exhibition, offering visitors the chance to experiment with silhouettes and shapes.

The Play that Goes Wrong Returns to Leeds Grand! ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ is making a welcome return to Leeds Grand Theatre from Monday 22nd to Saturday 27th May.

Pictured: Alastair Kirton

o-written by Mischief Theatre’s Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ is a highly physical comedy packed with finely tuned farce and Buster Keaton inspired slapstick, delivered with split second timing and ambitious daring. If you missed it last time make sure you catch it in May – it is truly hilarious! The play introduces ‘The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’ who are attempting to put on a 1920’s murder mystery but, as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong does, as the accident-prone thespians battle against all the odds to get to their final curtain call. We caught up with Alastair Kirton (who plays Max) seven weeks into the play’s tour in Poole. Alastair actually studied Biology at Leeds University then side-stepped into drama. He is a relative newcomer to Mischief Theatre and is having a ball. He said the physicality of the play was like having to learn a dance routine. He was particularly surprised when the director insisted that the cast did some physical training each day – he soon realised why! “What I really love about the play is that all the characters have their own wonderful moments and everyone supports their moment”, said Alastair. “It’s intense, but it is driven by laughter and energy. The audiences everywhere have been fantastic.” When we spoke to Alastair, the play was about to open on Broadway and final arrangements were being made for TPTGW Australia. It is enjoying its third year in the West End. It continues to play to sold-

out houses, and has been licensed to 33 countries. It is a remarkable rags-to-riches story for a play which started life at a London fringe venue with only four paying members of the public at the first performance! The Play That Goes Wrong is directed by Mark Bell, with set designs by Nigel Hook, lighting by Ric Mountjoy and costumes by Roberto Surace. It stars Katie Bernstein (Annie), Jason Callender (Jonathan), Edward Howells (Dennis), Edward Judge (Robert), Alastair Kirton (Max), Meg Mortell (Sandra), Graeme Rooney (Trevor) and Patrick Warner (Chris).

Tickets (£12.50 – £34.50) are available from 0844 848 2700 and leedsgrandtheatre. com.

Mischief Theatre was founded in 2008 by a group of graduates of The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and began as an improvised comedy group. Led by Artistic Director Henry Lewis and Company Director Jonathan Sayer, the company performs across the UK and internationally with improvised and original scripted work.

Artists Create Stunning Artwork of Olympians tuart Andrew MP recently unveiled a wonderful artwork of Olympians Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, together with Paralympian David Stone in the Horsforth Community Hub. This artwork was the idea of the Horsforth in Bloom volunteer group, who engaged the Howard Carlisle Water Colour School to prepare a mosaic type picture made up of hundreds of individual pieces. Over 120 artists created the picture which stands proudly in the hub to celebrate the achievements of the athletes in the Olympic Games of London 2012 and Rio 2016. It also recognises the skill and dedication of the artists who creating it. The Playhouse and Curve Theatre Present ‘The Graduate’

Art & Culture

‘The Graduate’, adapted by Terry Johnson and based on the novel by Charles Webb, is coming to West Yorkshire Playhouse from Friday 28th April – Saturday 27th May. Directed by Lucy Bailey,The Graduate is a co-production by West Yorkshire Playhouse and Leicester’s Curve Theatre. n 1960’s suburban California, a young man finds himself disillusioned by the world of aspiration and money that his parents have prepared him for. An illicit encounter with Mrs Robinson, a woman twice his age, plunges him into a world of sensual hedonistic delight and sets them both on a thrillingly destructive course. And, of course, Mrs Robinson has a lovely daughter. What could possibly go wrong? “The Graduate is a satire on the values and lifestyle of middle class suburban America”, said Lucy. “The world seen through Benjamin’s eyes is a heightened surreal version of reality, at times grotesques and absurd. It’s a coming of age play - painfully funny and deeply human.” Catherine McCormack, best known for her roles in the ‘Braveheart’ with Mel Gibson, and ‘Spy Game’ with Brad Pitt, plays Mrs Robinson. She was also nominated for an Olivier Award nomination for her role in ‘All My Son’ at the National Theatre, alongside Julie Walters. Benjamin will be played by Jack Monaghan, who played the lead role

A satire on suburban America in the record-breaking West End production of ‘War Horse’, as well as featuring in Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’ and Richard Curtis’ film ‘About Time’.

Adel & Wharfedale Ward Nuisance Calls Reach 30 Million a Week! A recent West Yorkshire Trading Standards report highlighted the number of nuisance calls being received for things like PPI, accident claims, computer viruses, double glazing etc. They have suggested a number of ways to reduce these, including going ex-directory, not giving out your phone number unnecessarily, and registering with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) on 0345 070 0707 or www.tpsonline.org.uk, which is free and should reduce the number of UK marketing calls.

You can also opt out of third party marketing on contracts/order forms – make sure to read the tick box carefully. If you have consented to receive marketing from a specific company the organisation is allowed to call you even if you have registered for TPS. If you are registered and you continue to receive calls, report the company to TPS. Ask your telephone provider for a Call Blocking facility, or consider buying a call blocker which allows you to block nuisance callers. These can be programmed to block international calls and withheld numbers and can be purchased from high street stores. Be wary of anyone cold calling trying to sell you a call blocker – this could be a scam.

Weetwood & West Park Ward The Council’s Site Allocations Plan is the plan required by government to show where housing, employment and retail will be built in Leeds through to 2028. The Council’s proposal to build housing on Tetley Fields, a vital piece of urban greenbelt that the community has come together to protect, has caused local friction. While we have not yet secured its protection from development, we will continue to fight to safeguard this necessary part of the green corridor. Consultation on the most recent set of changes has closed and assuming that the Council will approve this at its meeting on the 29th March, the plan will then be submitted to the Planning Inspector.

The Site Allocations Plan will shape all of our lives over the next ten years as the city grows.

So what happens next? The next stage of the process is public examination and we would expect the Inspector to announce the date of this over the Summer. The Inspector will analyse all comments, which should take two or three weeks, and then judge whether the plan is legally sound. If you have commented on the plan, there is a chance that the Inspector will call you to make further comments. However, with over fifty thousand comments made during the process so far, there is very little chance they will want to speak with everyone! This examination will result in the Inspector’s final report which is expected by the Winter when, barring any changes that need to be made, the plan can be adopted and the sites for development will be made permanent. Anyone with any interest in how the city and our own community is set to change over the next decade should take a look at the plan, which can be found on the Council’s webpage. This is a plan that will shape all of our lives over the next ten years as the city grows.

His name was missing from WWI, we should also clean and restore the monument. Funding was acquired from the Headingley Cenotaph, due to a mix up Community Committee, and this has gone ahead. The Return of the Scarecrows! eeds Modernians will once again host the Cookridge Scarecrow Festival over May Bank Ho l i d ay we e ke n d , S u n d ay 30th April and Monday 1st May. Last year’s event was an outstanding success with some 40 local residents, organisations and businesses joining in by making and hosting scarecrows in local gardens, with exhibits including The Wizard of Oz, Thomas the Tank Engine, and the Scared Crow, plus a number of scarecrows made by the children of Holy Trinity School, Cookridge Methodist Church, and other local community groups.

The event was strongly supported by Grace Community Church and Caring For Life who provided refreshments and inflatables for the children. Over the two days, the streets of Cookridge

came alive with over 1,000 parents and children eagerly following the Scarecrow Trail, spotting exhibits and looking for clues before returning to the Leeds Modernians Clubhouse on Cookridge Lane for well earned refreshments including cakes and ale! The organisers hope that this year’s event will be even bigger and better with extra attractions and plenty more scarecrows. Adel War Memorial Association to Host Summer Fete Adel War Memorial Association on Church Lane in Adel is to host a Summer Fete on Sunday 18th June, 12 noon until 5pm. The aim of this inaugural event in the Association’s grounds and Halls is to showcase the many sporting and social activities provided in the heart of Adel Village. “This is a direct and positive response to those residents who, in our survey, expressed concern about the lack of such activities in our area”, said John Hartley from the Adel Neighbourhood Forum. “The Forum was surprised by these findings, so this event will give local families hands-on experience of what is on offer.” At a time when there is serious concern about unhealthy life styles, the Association is keen to promote active participation at any age. “The aim is to raise our profile with the local community through events that encourage active participation that is family oriented and fun”, said Charles Ward, Chairman of the Summer Fete Committee. “There will be ‘Show and have a go’ or coaching sessions for all the family in such sports as archery, badminton, bowls, cricket, football, hockey, Lacrosse and tennis.” For further information, visit www.adelclub.co.uk and Facebook/ Adel-Sports-And-Social-Club.

buntings fell by 89% between 1970 and 2003, mainly because fewer seed and insect food sources are now available to them on farmland. The RSPB and other organisations currently advise farmers and landowners on measures they can take to help conserve farmland bird species like the Corn Bunting and restore their habitat. These include leaving stubble in fields in Winter, and providing seed food, especially cereal grain. In Spring they are asked to boost insect food by using buffer strips at field margins where wild flowers can grow.

There are a few other lawn care tasks that can be done now too, such as raking out any moss using a spring tine rake and applying a high nitrogen fertiliser. Any bare patches can be re-sown but they do need to be prepared first by digging over the soil and raking to give a fine tilth before gently firming. Sow seed onto this when the conditions are not too cold, wet or windy and you should be rewarded with an enviable green sward for the Summer.

Post Natal Shape Shifting! “I want women to be strong, fit and healthy - to forget about calorie counting, or using exercise simply as a punishment for eating food that they feel is ‘bad’.”

aroline Asquith’s ‘Shapeshifters’ post natal boot camps are a great way for new Mums to get out of the house, and to do something to boost their mental wellbeing by being out in the fresh air, meeting women in a similar situation, and actually doing something for themselves. Exercising really does help you cope with the pressures of huge life changes, as well as the massive lack of sleep – she has three boys under five, so she certainly understands! Classes are a combination of interval and bodyweight strength training. They really focus on hip, glute and deep core strength and activation, as well as upper body and back, which can become rounded and weak from constantly

feeding and picking up baby. The classes are not a walk in the park! Everyone is pushed to within their own capabilities and great care is taken with common complaints such as pubis symphysis and pelvic girdle pain, diastasis recti and carpel tunnel syndrome. “I got into specialising in post natal training because I get so mad at the way women speak about and treat themselves post-kids”, said Caroline. “Women can be very critical of each other, often insinuated that you don’t care enough about your baby if you want to spend time getting fit and healthy...women at my classes become great friends and all support each other, while becoming fitter and healthier.”

New Early Intervention Service for Young Adults with Eating Disorders FREED, a new trial which aims to ensure that young adults with eating disorders receive help and treatment sooner has launched in Leeds. Standing for ‘First Episode and Rapid Early Intervention Service for Young Adults with Eating Disorders’, FREED is for young people aged 18 to 25 who have developed an eating disorder within the last three years. The Yorkshire Centre for Eating Disorders, run by Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, is one of only four sites in the country, and the first outside of London, to be involved in the study. Previous studies have shown that the FREED early intervention model speeds up treatment for eating disorders and has a wide range of benefits, including:

• Cutting waiting times, making patients much more likely to engage with treatment • Reducing dropout rates • Promoting more rapid recovery and improved prognosis The two-year study aims to see if this early intervention model can be replicated across other eating disorder services. At the moment, in many services, patients can wait months for specialist interventions after being referred by their GP. With FREED they can expect to be assessed by a specialist and start treatment within 2-4 weeks from the point of initial GP referral.

Connor Woods is British Senior Indoor Champion Harriers, one of Britain’s largest and most successful athletics clubs. Last season he moved up to the U-20 age range, and is the youngest in this group. He went on to win the 200m English Schools International, and was selected for the Great Britain Junior team. Connor’s next target is to qualify for the 2017 European U-20 Championships. To qualify he needs to run a standard 21.15 seconds before July – which is probably achievable as he ran 21.08 seconds last season. Tropical World Reopens with New Areas and New Species Following an exciting refurbishment Tropical World in Roundhay has reopened with a revamped Creature Corner and Waterfall Area to complement the Aztec-themed aquarium. Both areas boast a range of wonderful new animal species.

he Aztec theme has been extended to the Waterfall House and Creature Corner and the animal habitats have been enhanced to allow visitors to get closer than ever to exotic creatures. New species include: the Madagascan Giant Day Geckos, Vampire Crabs, Leaf Cutter Ants, and Tomato Frogs. The waterfall has become volcanic – there are underwater viewing windows and an elevated viewing platform. From here you can look down onto two river monsters – the Arapaima and Red Tail Catfish. Arapaima are the world’s largest freshwater fish capable of reaching three metres in length and weighing over 100 kilograms in the Amazon. They are shaped like torpedos and covered in bullet hard scales. Red Tail Catfish have been known to grow up to five feet long in the wild. At the other end of the spectrum is the Dwarf Caiman crocodile, which hails from South America, with adults typically reaching weights of five to six kilograms.

There are new information boards in both areas where you can learn about the wildlife and habitats of Tropical World and how the animals survive in the wild. You can now book tickets in advance at www.tropicalworldleeds.co.uk. Discounts are available for LeedsCard, LeedsCard Extra and Breezecard holders and entry is free for under fives.

Community Shop Manager £15,965 pa (35 hours per week, Monday to Sunday) Horsforth, North Yorkshire Our shops support Shelter’s vital work by raising as much money and awareness as possible in local communities across the country. We’re now looking for an inspirational people person to join us as a Community Shop Manager in our Horsforth shop. Your role will be varied and will challenge you, but will provide you with stimulating and satisfying work. Our Community Shop Managers do not have a “typical day” and that’s because they are continually seeking different opportunities to engage with the local community and increase their shops contribution to Shelter’s cause. At Shelter we value our people and the skills and expertise they can bring to their role. As a Community Shop Manager, how you manage people is the most important skill we are looking for and it will be critical to your success in this role. We are looking for someone who has experience of managing a team and can demonstrate how they have empowered and motivated that team beyond expectations. With the added experience of being able to recruit and develop a diverse team, in particular volunteers, you may be exactly what we are looking for. Closing date: 2 April 2017 (at 11.30pm). Benefits include 30 days holiday and flexible working. We are committed to giving all applications equal consideration. Our shops are always looking for volunteers and donations of pre-loved goods. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
