VINCENZO LUIGI TOMASSO (1862-1944) MUSICIAN AND BARREL-ORGAN MAKER
For forty years Luigi Tomasso ran a unique business in Hunslet making barrel-organs, mostly for hire by street performers. When his workshop closed in 1942 it was one of only four left in the country and its long decline marked the end of an era – the disappearance of the ‘tingalary man’ from the streets of Leeds, churning out his popular tunes, sometimes accompanied by a monkey or a small appealing child to win people’s hearts and pennies. Luigi made a successful life for himself in Leeds, building a business and a family, and burying a childhood which had been marked by poverty, extreme hardship and endurance – twice he had walked a thousand miles across Europe to reach this promised land of opportunity and security. e was born in Cassino, Italy, between Rome and Naples. When he was only eight, he was rounded up with his little sister and other poor orphan children by a master, a ‘padrone’, to walk to England to work with Italian street musicians, who used the children, however tiny, to sing or play an instrument, and beg for money. The padrone drove the children hard – Luigi remembered him throwing one sick child down a well so he would not hold them up. But the padrone was refused entry to England and the children were deported back to Cassino: this long-established traffic in ‘child slaves’ had become a public scandal which the British and Italian governments tried to suppress. Luigi was determined to seek a better life. When he was twelve, he set off walking from Cassino back across the Alps, through France to Calais, paying his way by playing the accordion. He managed to save enough for the fare to Folkestone, and made his way to London where he found work in the famous Chiappa organ works in Clerkenwell, in what was called ‘Little Italy’. Here he learnt the complexities of building a barrel-organ: how to set the many thousands of pins in the cylinder to create a range of tunes. It required enormous skill, patience and musical knowledge – the quality of the music produced depended on the accurate placing of the pins, an art in itself. When new tunes were introduced all the pins had to be reset from scratch. Meanwhile he was welcomed into the Italian émigré community in London, and in 1885, when he was 23, he married Dominica Capaldi, whose family were all musicians from Italy. Now he was ready to start his own business. The couple seem to have travelled around for some time before deciding to settle

in Leeds, where he set up his organ works around the turn of the century in a workshop off the York Road, near where they lived. As the business expanded, moving in the ‘30s to Bowman Lane, he diversified into band organs and mechanical pianos, but the core of the business remained making and repairing barrel organs, lavishly decorated, for daily hire to the street performers – in their heyday 50 were rented out at two shillings a day and
taken round the streets, sometimes pulled by a donkey. Many of the performers, the organgrinders, were well-known characters, who sang and danced as well as turning their organs. Some were comic turns: one was said to win bets by fitting a pint mug into his mouth – after removing his false teeth! They could be viewed as maddening nuisances (as Charles Dickens thought) but many, particularly the poor, appreciated the cheerful, familiar music (popular songs, opera arias, hymns) they brought to the grey streets of the Leeds slums. Luigi and Dominica had nine surviving children, and many worked in the organ works or took up other businesses, including music. There was a family orchestra, and Luigi himself still played the accordion. But by the late 1930s, with the advance of radio, the era of the barrel-organ and street music was coming to an end. The works closed in 1942; the remaining organs were auctioned or chopped up for firewood. Luigi Tomasso himself died two years later, aged 81. He had made a good life from his hard beginnings. Today street music is not entirely dead – in and around Leeds the sound of an accordion still brightens the air and can bring a smile to the face, a lift to the step. What stories of arduous journeys may lie behind this music?

Leeds College of Art Announces Major Expansion Leeds College of Art recently announced the start of building works on its new £14 million, state-of-the-art expansion, due to be completed
The Leeds
by Summer 2018. his new build is the biggest capital investment that the College has ever embarked upon and has been two years in development. It marks the start of an exciting journey for the College, with plans in place to become the only specialist arts university in the North of England. A five storey, 6,000 square metres building, designed by architects DLA Design, will be built on the current car park at Blenheim Walk. It will accommodate art, design and performance facilities for increased student numbers and new courses.
The current Blenheim Walk campus has reached capacity so the new building will ensure that the College can meet the demand for places and the future expectations of students. The new building
Fund will allow the College to create a more diverse mix of educational courses, including the introduction of BA (Hons) Filmmaking and BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance in 2018. Specialist facilities will include a 230seat auditorium, music, film and photography studios, and a larger specialist arts library. There will also be an atrium-style entrance with a public exhibition gallery and coffee shop, and an enterprise centre which will also allow the College to engage more fully with regional businesses, and the wider communities of Leeds, as part of its employability agenda for students and alumni. The building will have many sustainable features including solar energy panels and an urban roof garden; and will achieve a high BREEAM rating. “As we move forward with our purposebuilt expansion, and add new courses to our portfolio, we will attract more students to the city offering them a greater diverse mix of creative courses”, said Professor Simone Wonnacott, Principal. “Our new build project coincides with our application to become a university, which will see the College becoming the only specialist arts university in the North of England.”
The Leeds Fund was established by Le e d s Community Foundation to make a positive change in the communities of Leeds that need it most.
A new initiative for the city, The Leeds Fund accepts contributions from individuals and companies wanting to support their city. These donations are then distributed in the form of grants to local community groups and charities – from small amounts to host community street parties, to large strategic grants that address big issues facing the city. In 2017/18, the Fund’s priority for large grants will focus on helping people living with mental health support needs. By 2020, The Leeds Fund aims to distribute a minimum of £500,000 each year in support of community projects that address a wide range of issues. For further information about the Fund and how to contribute, please contact Rachel Evans on 0113 242 2426.

Sovereign Square Latest Site in City Less Grey Project A City Less Grey sees both local and nationally based artists creating art installations and events at five sites across the city. This is part of a street art programme initiated by East Street Arts in collaboration with LeedsBID (Leeds Business Improvement District).
Pictured: Jo Peel at work
rtist Jo Peel started work at the end of February on a giant hand painted mural that will run the length of one of the hoardings facing the park on Sovereign Square, and depicting personal stories and Leeds’ transformation as a city. Jo specialises in documenting everyday scenes and has been commissioned to paint internal and external walls for councils and corporate clients across the UK and internationally. A City Less Grey was launched last November on Kirkgate, with a hoarding screening the collapsed First White Cloth Hall. Artist Kasia Breska installed a wall of abstract mapping and secret Morse code messages, relating to Kirkgate and its historical significance within the city. The hoarding on Kirkgate changes every four months, giving three Leeds artists the opportunity to experiment and showcase their work. In April tattoo artist Joe Dickinson will start an installation, followed by spoken word organisation, A Firm of Poets, in August. “A City Less Grey is about bringing colour to key sites in the city, animating buildings and places and creating cultural points of interest”, said Andrew Cooper, LeedsBID Chief Executive. “The diverse mix of artistic styles will enhance both the look and feel of Leeds for visitors, commuters and residents – helping to fulfill LeedsBID’s ambition to transform the city and improve the experience of all city users.” Other key sites in the city to be transformed in unique artistic styles will be released at a later date, with all works due for completion this year.

The Playhouse and Curve Theatre Present ‘The Graduate’
Art & Culture
‘The Graduate’, adapted by Terry Johnson and based on the novel by Charles Webb, is coming to West Yorkshire Playhouse from Friday 28th April – Saturday 27th May. Directed by Lucy Bailey,The Graduate is a co-production by West Yorkshire Playhouse and Leicester’s Curve Theatre. n 1960’s suburban California, a young man finds himself disillusioned by the world of aspiration and money that his parents have prepared him for. An illicit encounter with Mrs Robinson, a woman twice his age, plunges him into a world of sensual hedonistic delight and sets them both on a thrillingly destructive course. And, of course, Mrs Robinson has a lovely daughter. What could possibly go wrong? “The Graduate is a satire on the values and lifestyle of middle class suburban America”, said Lucy. “The world seen through Benjamin’s eyes is a heightened surreal version of reality, at times grotesques and absurd. It’s a coming of age play - painfully funny and deeply human.” Catherine McCormack, best known for her roles in the ‘Braveheart’ with Mel Gibson, and ‘Spy Game’ with Brad Pitt, plays Mrs Robinson. She was also nominated for an Olivier Award nomination for her role in ‘All My Son’ at the National Theatre, alongside Julie Walters. Benjamin will be played by Jack Monaghan, who played the lead role
A satire on suburban America in the record-breaking West End production of ‘War Horse’, as well as featuring in Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’ and Richard Curtis’ film ‘About Time’.

he installation is an adventure in sound featuring the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North. It is an original piece of music heard through headphones during a walk across the bridge, alongside the resonances of the bridge, its weather and traffic. Composed by Norwegian trumpeter and contemporary jazz musician Arve Henriksen, electronic musician Jan Bang and guitarist Eivind Aarset, it mixes their music with orchestral and choral music and field recordings made at the Humber Bridge by sound artist Jez Riley French. ‘The Height of the Reeds’ is a unique audio experience, designed to be listened to during a walk across the bridge’s 2,220-metre span – the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world that is possible to cross on foot. It uncovers the hidden sounds of the bridge and its surrounding natural environment of river and fens, pairing these with music that is both atmospheric and epic. It also contains poetry by Norwegian poet Nils Christian Moe-Repstad read by Maureen Lipman and Barrie Rutter, and narration recorded by a pupil from Bude Park Primary School, where Opera North has been delivering a Singing School programme over the last three years. The Height of the Reeds launches on Saturday 1 April with a weekend of timed group walks with added live interventions, and will be available for the following month. Visitors need to collect a headset on arrival at the bridge to activate the unique sonic experience that unfolds as they walk the length of the bridge. Tickets are free from Monday 3rd – Sunday 30th April. Tickets for the opening weekend (Saturday 1st April /Sunday 2nd April) are priced at £7.50, which includes additional live interventions and some treats along the way. Booking in advance is advised as the number of headsets available is limited. Box office: 01482 30 2017, hull2017.co.uk

‘Disobedient Bodies’ will see one of the most innovative contemporary fashion designers responding to The Hepworth’s impressive collection of modern British art. “This is a rare and exciting opportunity for me to bring together some of the works of art and fashion that have long inspired my own creative work”, said Jonathan, “and to see what happens when these objects rub up against each other.”
Pictured: The Thinleys, 2015 © Jamie Hawkesworth
An introductory gallery will emulate a working environment offering a glimpse of the sources that have fuelled Anderson’s creative practice. Henry Moore’s Reclining Figure (1936) will be presented against a series of black & white photographs by Jamie Hawkesworth. Shot in collaboration with Anderson, the models are covered in knit fabric, turning them into sculptural shapes reminiscent of Moore’s recumbent forms.
Textiles will also be used to create a series of rooms that will offer a backdrop to juxtapositions between sculptures and design pieces. Visitors will see how artists and designers have reimagined the body – especially Hepworth and Moore who lie at the heart of Wakefield’s collection – and discover more about Anderson’s own creative vision. Figurative works by modern British artists will also be shown, including Hans
Arp, Louise Bourgeois, Constantin Brancusi, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Alberto Giacometti, Sarah Lucas, Dorothea Tanning and Rebecca Warren. These will be brought into dialogue with pieces by fashion designers who have similarly reconceived body form – from Anne-Marie Beretta, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Rei Kawakubo, to Helmut Lang, Yves Saint Laurent and Issey Miyake, as well as garments from Anderson’s notorious A/W 2013 collection. At the heart of the exhibition will be a ‘living’ sculptural environment, where knitted garments, designed by Anderson, will create an immersive and tactile experience and visitors will be encouraged to transform their bodies into abstract forms and interact with the exhibition. This is an important element of Anderson’s vision for the exhibition, offering visitors the chance to experiment with silhouettes and shapes.

o-written by Mischief Theatre’s Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ is a highly physical comedy packed with finely tuned farce and Buster Keaton inspired slapstick, delivered with split second timing and ambitious daring. If you missed it last time make sure you catch it in May – it is truly hilarious! The play introduces ‘The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’ who are attempting to put on a 1920’s murder mystery but, as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong does, as the accident-prone thespians battle against all the odds to get to their final curtain call. We caught up with Alastair Kirton (who plays Max) seven weeks into the play’s tour in Poole. Alastair actually studied Biology at Leeds University then side-stepped into drama. He is a relative newcomer to Mischief Theatre and is having a ball. He said the physicality of the play was like having to learn a dance routine. He was particularly surprised when the director insisted that the cast did some physical training each day – he soon realised why! “What I really love about the play is that all the characters have their own wonderful moments and everyone supports their moment”, said Alastair. “It’s intense, but it is driven by laughter and energy. The audiences everywhere have been fantastic.” When we spoke to Alastair, the play was about to open on Broadway and final arrangements were being made for TPTGW Australia. It is enjoying its third year in the West End. It continues to play to sold-
out houses, and has been licensed to 33 countries. It is a remarkable rags-to-riches story for a play which started life at a London fringe venue with only four paying members of the public at the first performance! The Play That Goes Wrong is directed by Mark Bell, with set designs by Nigel Hook, lighting by Ric Mountjoy and costumes by Roberto Surace. It stars Katie Bernstein (Annie), Jason Callender (Jonathan), Edward Howells (Dennis), Edward Judge (Robert), Alastair Kirton (Max), Meg Mortell (Sandra), Graeme Rooney (Trevor) and Patrick Warner (Chris).
Tickets (£12.50 – £34.50) are available from 0844 848 2700 and leedsgrandtheatre. com.
Mischief Theatre was founded in 2008 by a group of graduates of The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and began as an improvised comedy group. Led by Artistic Director Henry Lewis and Company Director Jonathan Sayer, the company performs across the UK and internationally with improvised and original scripted work.

A Parting Gift from Yorkshire Bank Yorkshire Bank in Chapel Allerton is to close in May, but recently the bank made a generous gesture to two community groups – the Chapel Allerton Neighbourhood Plan Committee (CANPLAN), and Gledhow Valley Conservation Area Group (GVCAG), to help with future community projects.
Branch Manager Mark Corbett, handed over a cheque for £300 to Pat Hunter of CANPLAN and Christine Osborne of GVCAG on the steps of the impressive Portland stone, art deco building in the centre of Chapel Allerton. The bank is truly local with interior glass doors engraved with place names, Miles Hill, Scott Hall and Allerton Hall. “It is very sad to be losing Yorkshire Bank from Chapel Allerton where the Yorkshire Penny Bank first opened its doors in 1937”, said Christine Osborne. “But we are very grateful for this parting gift!”
A Retro Fundraiser for St Gemma’s t Gemma’s Hospice is heading to the disco with the ‘Turn Back Time Ball’ on Friday 5th May at Elland Road Centenary Pavillion. The Ball will be a celebration of all things retro and will include a nostalgia filled four- course meal, music from the Motown Sparklettes, and a whole host of other entertainment. There will also be fantastic prizes in a raffle, auction, and Rock n’ Roll bingo. “If you’re in the mood for a fun filled night of retro nostalgia, and a wealth of glitz, glamour and black forest gateau, this is the place to be!” said Sophie Bramley, Event Fundraiser at St. Gemma’s. “All proceeds will go

he gardening season is upon us and thankfully the brown bin collections have restarted. I’m afraid I only have to look at a bedding plant and it starts to wilt, it’s quite a gift! However, Slaid Hill in Bloom has some superb gardeners and they are currently looking for more volunteers. I have met the team a number of times
and you would struggle to find a friendlier group to spend time with. If you are interested in getting involved, contact them via info@ slaidhillinbloom.org Turning from flowerbeds to the less than fragrant topic of dog fouling… I have had a record month of complaints about this blight on footpaths and verges, particularly around Alwoodley and St Paul’s Primary Schools. I realise it is only a tiny minority of dog owners who are responsible, but they are ruining things for everyone. The Council’s Dog Wardens have stepped up patrols and the Locality Team is doing all it can to keep on top of this messy situation. Hopefully we can make it clear to irresponsible dog owners how unacceptable their thoughtlessness is. It is their responsibility to clear up after their dogs. Last month, I wrote about our planned meeting with First Bus at MaeCare. Well, we had our meeting and First Bus was left in no doubt as to level of concern from
Alwoodley residents about their bus service – buses that are late or cancelled without explanation; a lack of service in some parts, with the No.48 being cited as a real issue; complaints about poor customer service and complaint handling; and unfriendly drivers (though we were also told of a driver who went beyond the call of duty to return a lady’s handbag). First accepted that its service was currently wide of the mark and promised to take on board some of the comments and try to remedy them. We have agreed to meet again in six months to see if First really has listened. As always if I, or my colleagues Cllrs Neil Buckley and Peter Harrand, can be of any assistance with a local issue, please do get in touch. We are here to try to help you.

here are times when many of us find ourselves in a situation where we need help. Unfortunately, this has become a more of a reality over the last few years, even for many hard working people who despite working long hours, still find they need a helping hand and turn to a Food Bank. Last year in North and West Leeds alone 7,719 people needed support from a food bank. In my last article I wrote about the strength of our communities and the incredible work many of our local groups do. Leeds North and West Food Bank is very much part of this, ensuring no one in our communities should ever experience having to go hungry. Incredibly, this service is primarily run on the commitment
of volunteers and depends on donations of both food and financial support from the public. This is also a service that offers much more than three days of non-perishable food for those referred to the food bank - they also signpost individuals to key services and offer access to trained advisors for those who need continuing support. This is why it is critical that we support those who need our support wherever we can. I am pleased that my ward colleagues, Councillors Alex Sobel and Sharon Hamilton, and I are able to offer our support by jointly contributing £600 of the Members Improvements in the Community and the Environment (MICE) donation to the Leeds North and West Food Bank. As a Council, we will continue to focus on tackling poverty and inequalities by building a strong economy which is also compassionate. This commitment will remain at the top of our agenda.
As well as both editions of North Leeds Life, you’ll also find many more interesting stories and events on our website, that have either arrived too late for inclusion, or we simply ran out of room in the magazine. We are adding new stories nearly every day. So don’t miss out!

nce extremely common on farmland, the Corn Bunting has been vanishing from our countryside at an alarming rate over the last 50 years.
Photo: : Andy
Hay Outside the breeding RSPBseason, it is an inconspicuous images. brown bird, the size of a com skylark, rather plump with streaked brown plumage and paler streaked underparts. It has a heavy straw-coloured bill and feeds mainly on the grains from cereal crops and tiny grass seeds, but also on insects. It becomes much easier to spot, however, from January or February onwards, when the males visit their territories
and sing incessantly from dawn to dusk, often from high exposed perches such as fence posts and telegraph wires. Their song, traditionally likened to ‘jangling keys’, is a bright accelerating sequence of notes. Sadly, the UK population of corn
buntings fell by 89% between 1970 and 2003, mainly because fewer seed and insect food sources are now available to them on farmland. The RSPB and other organisations currently advise farmers and landowners on measures they can take to help conserve farmland bird species like the Corn Bunting and restore their habitat. These include leaving stubble in fields in Winter, and providing seed food, especially cereal grain. In Spring they are asked to boost insect food by using buffer strips at field margins where wild flowers can grow.

Sweet April showers do bring May flowers – Thomas Tusser, 1557 Lawn Care As the warmer weather begins, grass growth will start to speed up and your lawn will need regular trims from now on. For the first few cuts, keep the mower blades fairly high, lowering them gradually as cutting becomes more regular. A trim once every two weeks is usually sufficient this month. The cucurbit family is a great group of plants to grow from seed and includes courgettes, gourds and pumpkins – all of which can be started off now in pots on your windowsill. You can also get started with some green beans, beetroot, carrots, peas, lettuce, spinach and a host of others by sowing them directly outside into a prepared bed or container. Any seed potatoes that you have can be planted out this month too, into the ground or in large containers.
Feed your trees, shrubs and hedges using a slow release fertiliser gently mixed into the soil around them. If you have overcrowded groups of Hosta plants, you can lift and divide them now before they come into leaf. Tie any new shoots on your climbing roses to their supports whilst they are still supple enough to bend. Penstemons can be cut back now, removing any old stems and leaving behind the new shoots at the base. Deadhead faded flowers on Daffodils and Tulips, but don’t cut off the leaves – just leave them to grow as they are helping the bulbs to build up their stores for next year.
growth will start to speed up and your lawn will need regular trims
There are a few other lawn care tasks that can be done now too, such as raking out any moss using a spring tine rake and applying a high nitrogen fertiliser. Any bare patches can be re-sown but they do need to be prepared first by digging over the soil and raking to give a fine tilth before gently firming. Sow seed onto this when the conditions are not too cold, wet or windy and you should be rewarded with an enviable green sward for the Summer.

Great British Spring Clean in Roundhay Park
Litter picking was one of several working parties organised by Friends of Roundhay Park (FoRP) to actively protect, preserve and improve the facilities and natural beauty of Roundhay Park for everyone’s enjoyment. Roundhay WI and FoRP joined forces to give Roundhay Park a good spring clean. Whilst most park users make good use of the litterbins, unfortunately drinks bottles and cans, crisp packets, sweet wrappers and plastic bags find their way onto the fields spoiling the look of the Park. So with grabbers at the ready the willing volunteers set out to scour the length and breadth of the park in search of litter and were amply rewarded with brimming sacks of rubbish! Roundhay WI meets on the second Thursday of the month at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Shaftesbury Avenue, LS8. Email: wiroundhay@gmail.com

Post Natal Shape Shifting! “I want women to be strong, fit and healthy - to forget about calorie counting, or using exercise simply as a punishment for eating food that they feel is ‘bad’.”
aroline Asquith’s ‘Shapeshifters’ post natal boot camps are a great way for new Mums to get out of the house, and to do something to boost their mental wellbeing by being out in the fresh air, meeting women in a similar situation, and actually doing something for themselves. Exercising really does help you cope with the pressures of huge life changes, as well as the massive lack of sleep – she has three boys under five, so she certainly understands! Classes are a combination of interval and bodyweight strength training. They really focus on hip, glute and deep core strength and activation, as well as upper body and back, which can become rounded and weak from constantly
feeding and picking up baby. The classes are not a walk in the park! Everyone is pushed to within their own capabilities and great care is taken with common complaints such as pubis symphysis and pelvic girdle pain, diastasis recti and carpel tunnel syndrome. “I got into specialising in post natal training because I get so mad at the way women speak about and treat themselves post-kids”, said Caroline. “Women can be very critical of each other, often insinuated that you don’t care enough about your baby if you want to spend time getting fit and healthy...women at my classes become great friends and all support each other, while becoming fitter and healthier.”

New Early Intervention Service for Young Adults with Eating Disorders FREED, a new trial which aims to ensure that young adults with eating disorders receive help and treatment sooner has launched in Leeds. Standing for ‘First Episode and Rapid Early Intervention Service for Young Adults with Eating Disorders’, FREED is for young people aged 18 to 25 who have developed an eating disorder within the last three years. The Yorkshire Centre for Eating Disorders, run by Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, is one of only four sites in the country, and the first outside of London, to be involved in the study. Previous studies have shown that the FREED early intervention model speeds up treatment for eating disorders and has a wide range of benefits, including:
• Cutting waiting times, making patients much more likely to engage with treatment • Reducing dropout rates • Promoting more rapid recovery and improved prognosis The two-year study aims to see if this early intervention model can be replicated across other eating disorder services. At the moment, in many services, patients can wait months for specialist interventions after being referred by their GP. With FREED they can expect to be assessed by a specialist and start treatment within 2-4 weeks from the point of initial GP referral.
Run Your Way to a Healthier Heart The Great North Run covers 13.1 miles from the centre of Newcastle to South Shields and has a great atmosphere. Heart Research UK is inviting you to run for them this year. n the last 50 years, HRUK has funded £24 million of medical research and it’s thanks to this work that the annual number of UK deaths from cardiovascular disease has been more than halved. A significant number of heart disease cases are preventable through maintaining an active lifestyle and healthy diet. This is precisely why training for an event like the Great North Run is a great way to keep your heart healthy.

Connor Woods is British Senior Indoor Champion Harriers, one of Britain’s largest and most successful athletics clubs. Last season he moved up to the U-20 age range, and is the youngest in this group. He went on to win the 200m English Schools International, and was selected for the Great Britain Junior team. Connor’s next target is to qualify for the 2017 European U-20 Championships. To qualify he needs to run a standard 21.15 seconds before July – which is probably achievable as he ran 21.08 seconds last season. The 2017 European U-20 Championships take place this Summer in Grosseto, Italy. Connor lives in Chapel Allerton and attends Abbey Grange C of E Academy.

Discovery Centre Brings WWI to Life s part of the More Able programme, the History Department at Allerton Grange School organised two sessions for 40 Year 8 students at the Leeds Discovery Centre, focusing on World War One. The Centre has over a million objects stored on shelves in a giant fridge, safely away from natural light, with secure magnetic door locks and some of the stickiest bug traps in the world. The Centre stores are thousands of objects that are not currently on display at any of the eight Leeds Museums and Galleries. Andrew Kryover provided a selection of items from WWI, many of which had strong links with Leeds. The students were split into four groups and each had
the opportunity to handle, investigate and discuss the pieces, bringing to life the experiences of soldiers and people

during the ‘Great War’. The objects included a ‘Dead man’s penny’, which was sent to the families of soldiers who were killed during the war, postcards from the frontline, German playing cards, trench art, and a brass tin sent to the soldiers by Queen Mary as a Christmas present. Each group chose one item and gave a brief presentation on what interested them most about it. The students appreciated being able to touch artefacts that had played a part in history, leading them to develop a better understanding of those who lived and died during the War. The school hopes to invite Leeds Discovery Centre to Allerton Grange in the future to help bring more history to life. - Miss Anna Simons, Teacher of History

Tropical World Reopens with New Areas and New Species Following an exciting refurbishment Tropical World in Roundhay has reopened with a revamped Creature Corner and Waterfall Area to complement the Aztec-themed aquarium. Both areas boast a range of wonderful new animal species.
he Aztec theme has been extended to the Waterfall House and Creature Corner and the animal habitats have been enhanced to allow visitors to get closer than ever to exotic creatures. New species include: the Madagascan Giant Day Geckos, Vampire Crabs, Leaf Cutter Ants, and Tomato Frogs. The waterfall has become volcanic – there are underwater viewing windows and an elevated viewing platform. From here you can look down onto two river monsters – the Arapaima and Red Tail Catfish. Arapaima are the world’s largest freshwater fish capable of reaching three metres in length and weighing over 100 kilograms in the Amazon. They are shaped like torpedos and covered in bullet hard scales. Red Tail Catfish have been known to grow up to five feet long in the wild. At the other end of the spectrum is the Dwarf Caiman crocodile, which hails from South America, with adults typically reaching weights of five to six kilograms.
There are new information boards in both areas where you can learn about the wildlife and habitats of Tropical World and how the animals survive in the wild. You can now book tickets in advance at www.tropicalworldleeds.co.uk. Discounts are available for LeedsCard, LeedsCard Extra and Breezecard holders and entry is free for under fives.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown & Roundhay areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
