(SIR) JOHN HAWKSHAW 1811-1891 CIVIL ENGINEER
Is John Hawkshaw the forgotten man among the giants of Victorian engineering? Everyone’s heard of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, voted second after Churchill in a BBC poll of ‘the 100 greatest Britons’. Telford and the Stephensons are familiar names – but not John Hawkshaw. Yet his achievements and the scope of his work in this country and across the world were famous in their day. His Severn Tunnel was an engineering marvel; he built railways, canals, bridges, harbours, advised on the Suez Canal, and promoted ideas for a Channel Tunnel. From modest beginnings here in Leeds, he established himself as one of the country’s premier civil engineers, helping to power the growth and wealth of the nation. is start in life was unpromising. His father Henry was an innkeeper, running the Harewood Arms in ‘The Square’, a yard off Kirkgate (near Fish Street). His mother Sarah was illiterate. John was their fifth child, born at the inn in 1811. When he was nine his father died, but his mother took over and found a way to send this bright boy to Leeds Grammar School to study. The next year, aged thirteen, he was apprenticed to the prominent Leeds surveyor, Charles Fowler, whose busy practice focused on road building. John trained there for six years but left in 1830 to join the Lancashire practice of the railway engineer Alexander Nimmo – railways were the future.

olunteers at Hope Pastures Horse & Donkey Sanctuary have been busy knitting ponies to sell at events – a great way of raising funds for the charity. When Hope Pastures was chosen as the Official Charity for Bramham International Horse Trials, the team put out a call on social media for others to join them and add to the knitted herd. “We were astounded by the response”, said Kim Pengelly, Fundraising & PR Co-ordinator. “I could hardly keep up with the requests for patterns. The pattern is quite easy, so even people who had needles hidden away in cupboards for years pulled them out, dusted them off and got to work. “We sold nearly 300 knitted ponies and the overall amount raised over the four days (including our ‘bag drop’) was over £6,600 - beyond our wildest dreams. The sanctuary aims not only to rescue, but also to rehabilitate and re-home equines with new and loving families. We’re small, with few overheads, so 95p of every £1 donated is spent directly on the animals, which means this money will be used to give a new life to more animals. A massive thank you to everyone who made this possible.”

Fifty Years of Leeds West Indian Carnival This year Leeds West Indian Carnival celebrates its 50th anniversary. Founded in 1967 by Arthur France and fellow Caribbean friends while studying at Leeds University, the Carnival was the first of its kind not only in the UK, but also in Europe. Now Europe’s longest running Caribbean carnival parade and the biggest outside London, it incorporates all three elements of authentic Caribbean carnival – costumes, music and a masquerade procession. his year’s parade looks set to break records with around 2,000 revellers, made up of over 30 costumed troupes and 50 large scale King, Queen, Prince and Princess costumes. Thousands will flock to Potternewton Park on 28th August to take in the dazzling procession. The programme of events includes a pop up photo booth taking portraits of people sporting specially commissioned headdresses, and an exhibition capturing 50 years of the Carnival with photography, footage, and archive materials, as well as an oral history project gathering the memories and stories of the pioneers who brought Carnival to Leeds. “We’ve been receiving national and international queries from carnival fans planning to be in the city for our 50th anniversary, with hundreds of former Leeds residents coming home for Carnival”, said Arthur France. “This is a landmark moment not only for the Carnival but for Leeds to showcase how very proud we are of one of

the few events that can truly unite people from all walks of life.” The annual Carnival King and Queen Show, which showcases dramatic costumes, will be at West Yorkshire Playhouse on 25th August, and will feature the new Carnival Choir, performing calypso melodies with choral styling. Arts Council funding has helped Carnival organisers to offer young people practical skills, mentorship and work experience with costume designers and partner organisations, including BBC Radio Leeds, BBC North and The Playhouse. Support from LeedsBID (Leeds Business Improvement District) will see the popular Pop Up Carnival, first aired at the 2014 Grand Depart, taking Carnival to unexpected places throughout the Summer. And, big name international soca music artists will appear on the main stage on Carnival Day thanks to Leeds 2023 support. www.leedscarnival.co.uk Twitter @ CarnivalLeeds
RJC Dance Create Carnival Troupe for 50th Anniversary ver the years, RJC Dance has been very successful in designing winning costumes and performing for Leeds West Indian Carnival. Director Kathy Williams and costume designer Rhian Kempadoo Millar have led RJC Dance troupes for over 15 years; and in May Dr Beccy Watson and PHD student Sabina Khan presented a paper at the International Conference on Caribbean Carnival Cultures at Leeds Beckett University. The overall theme for the parade will be a rich tapestry of carnival costumes from traditional to current, incorporating Caribbean Carnival characters and contemporary designs and music. These characters will be used as inspiration for design workshops with young people, alumni and adults.
RJC Dance was founded in 1993. Based at The Mandela Centre in Chapeltown the leading inclusive Black dance organisation appeals to a diverse audience, both culturally and socially. It also empowers young people from ages four – 19 through creative movement, dance and performance, while providing challenging experiences for personal growth through an integrated social and personal development programme. “This is the best possible outcome”, said Rod Dixon, Artistic Director. “We see this as a vote of confidence in what we’ve achieved through a challenging time - but one in which we’ve thrived through passion and dedication for what we do, and with the overwhelming support of our fans and peers. “Through project grants, creative partnerships and the backing of donors and creative collaborators, we’ve realised our ambitions and delivered a successful body of work. We now have the funding to build on this with an exciting new programme, taking us into our 50th year as a radical arts company that is committed to making theatre for the many, not the few. We have a number of productions in the pipeline as we commission and produce relevant plays that highlight injustice and drive social change. We remain committed to nurturing diverse artistic voices by removing barriers that far too often prevent new talent from developing. With this funding, and the continued support of our fans and collaborators, we’re looking forward to putting these plans into action.” Red Ladder is widely regarded as the UK’s leading radical theatre company. In 2014, it received a 100% cut to ACE funding, resulting in a reduction of core income from £162,000 to zero (2015-2018) and almost ceased to exist. In an overwhelming demonstration of support, the Save Red Ladder campaign was established by a group of supporters and raised more than £30,000 in donations. This has evolved into the company’s Ladderistas membership scheme, a platform for individual giving, which will play a vital role for the future of Red Ladder. www.redladder.co.uk

The Hepworth Wakefield wins Art Fund Museum of the Year
Gershwin’s ‘Crazy for You’ Comes to The Grand ‘Crazy For You’, George and Ira Gershwin’s high-energy, high-kicking and gloriously glamorous feel-good musical comedy is coming to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 29th August – Saturday 2nd September. Starring Olivier Award nominees Tom Chambers (Top Hat, Strictly Come Dancing, Casualty), Charlotte Wakefield (Sophie in ‘Mamma Mia!’ and Truly Scrumptious in ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’), and Love Island presenter Caroline Flack (Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor), Crazy For You is a celebration of the great Broadway musicals and features many memorable tracks, including ‘I Got Rhythm’, ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me’, ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’ and ‘Embraceable You’. We spoke to Tom Chambers, who was deep into rehearsals at the time, and he was just buzzing with enthusiasm. Little did we know that the suave doctor from Holby City had been a huge musical fan since his teens, idolising Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire and just itching for an opportunity to put on a pair of tap shoes. Strictly Come Dancing helped to hone his skills. “I had minimal dance training”, said
Tom, “Strictly was absolutely physically exhausting. There was still the ‘day job’ and we had to learn a whole new dance every Monday! “Crazy for You is my dream role. Written in the 90s but set in the 50s, it has amazing characters. It is a classic love story – all about the lengths he goes to to win the girl. It’s a tale of mistaken identity, plot twists, heartbreak and happiness. There are great one-liners. And, I’m playing opposite Caroline Flack – we met on Strictly and we have great chemistry together.” Tom recently appeared in Top Hat at The Grand and thinks it is one of the best venues he’s played in. The national tour has been produced by the Watermill Theatre and is directed by Paul Hart. The choreography is by Nathan M. Wright and the design by Diego Pitarch. This is a 31 week tour, with eight shows a week! Fitness and nutrition are top of all the performers’ lists but as far as Tom is concerned, his enthusiasm alone is bound to carry him through! We are in for a fantastic show! Tickets £24.50 – £46.50 available from 0844 848 2700 or online at leedsgrandtheatre.com
The Hepworth Wakefield has been chosen as Art Fund Museum of the Year 2017. The £100,000 prize is the world’s largest and most prestigious prize for museums, rewarding the museum that has shown exceptional imagination, innovation and creativity in all areas of the business. “The Hepworth Wakefield has been a powerful force of energy from the moment it opened,” said Stephen Deuchar, Director of the Art Fund. “The building has proved a perfect stage – both for its collections and a breathtaking sequence of special exhibitions. The Hepworth serves its local community and contributes to regional tourism too... It’s the museum everyone would dream of having on their doorstep.” 2016 was an exceptional year for the gallery, with 21% growth in visits on the previous year. Major exhibitions included The Hepworth Prize for Sculpture and retrospectives of both Martin Parr and Stanley Spencer and a newly commissioned installation by Anthea Hamilton. Plans to build on the success of 2016 include transforming the wider site, by creating a beautifully landscaped garden by leading garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith. It will be one of the largest free public gardens in the UK and will enhance the gallery’s riverside setting, enabling The Hepworth to further broaden the programme. An ambitious future collaboration with partners in the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle – Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery and Yorkshire Sculpture Park – will be announced soon, as will an exciting new initiative to continue to grow the collection. http://www.hepworthwakefield.org/

Opera North’s ‘Little Greats’ at The Grand Opera North’s ‘Little Greats’ season consists of six operas, presented in a ‘mix-and-match’ rotation, creating new and unusual pairings, and starts on 16th September at Leeds Grand Theatre.

The Operas featured are: Trouble in Tahiti – Leonard Bernstein’s sparkling
satire on the American Dream. In 1950’s suburbia, Sam and Dinah appear to have the perfect life. However, their growing detachment exposes a mutual feeling that they’re trapped in a life that has become a lie. ‘Trouble in Tahiti’ is the perfect introduction to opera and to Bernstein in this his centenary year. It features all the intensity of a longer work in just 45 minutes. Pagliacci – a shot of pure operatic adrenaline. A short, sharp shot of thrilling drama, raw passion and

gritty realism. Leoncavallo’s ‘bleeding slice of life’ features a theatre troupe preparing for a show. When a jealous husband, discovers his wife’s infidelity, the stage becomes a scene of violent reckoning, but the show must go on.
L’enfant et les Sortilèges (The Child and the Magic Spells) – a
bewitching childhood fantasy. A young boy refuses to do his homework and flies into a tantrum. Suddenly, everything around him comes magically to life including his nursery furniture and even his arithmetic. Ravel’s opera is dazzling, witty and surreal, appealing to both adults and children. Cavalleria rusticana – a redblooded tale of jealousy and revenge. Returning from the army, Turridù discovers that his lover has married someone else. He consoles himself by seducing another girl, Santuzza, though he’s still consumed by desire for his previous passion. A powerful exploration of faithlessness, jealousy and violence. Trial by Jury – a hilarious courtroom farce. With its brilliantly witty comedy numbers and catchy tunes ‘Trial by Jury’ was Gilbert and Sullivan’s first operetta and launched a partnership that took British musical theatre by storm. Osud (Destiny)– a universal tale of the anguish of love. Míla is in love with the composer Živný, but her mother forces her to take a rich suitor instead. Four years later, the couple is reunited, but a tragedy occurs which changes everything. At 80 minutes, ‘Osud’ is the longest of the Little Greats and contains some of Janáček’s most glorious music encompassing both romantic ecstasy and the depths of despair. Tickets for each opera are sold separately, giving audiences the flexibility to choose their path through the season. Those new to opera can take advantage of a £10 ticket offer, which will make the best available seats cheaper for newcomers at every single performance.

The Shock of the New at The Playhouse
Art & Culture
This Autumn/Winter season, the West Yorkshire Playhouse presents a far-reaching programme, consisting exclusively of newly written productions, a vibrant collection of diverse stories from across the world, retold by exceptional theatre makers. The programme includes: ‘Partition’ (8 – 9 Sept) is a collaboration between The Playhouse and BBC Radio Leeds, a radio broadcast and live performance marking the 70th anniversary of the division of colonial India. Written by Leeds writer and arts journalist Nick Ahad, ‘Partition’ explores the devastating legacy of a religious divide which cost around a million lives, through the eyes of a modern day betrothed couple. The Playhouse’s Associate Director, Amy Leach, directs ‘Queen of Chapeltown’ (12 - 15 Sept) – a newly commissioned play by Colin Grant. This exuberant snapshot documents the creation of Carnival, paying homage to the city’s rich culture and celebrating the role of calypso and Carnival Queens in West Indian heritage in Yorkshire.
‘(The fall of) The Master Builder
(30 Sept – 21 Oct) is a reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic drama for 2017.
Pictured: Director Sally Cookson
Photo: Ellie Kurttz
Written by Zinnie Harris, it tells of a once great man whose past transgressions and abuse of power threaten to catch up with him. Artistic Director James Brining directs Reece Dinsdale in the title role.
Visiting productions include: ‘The Kite Runner’ (19 – 23 Sept). Based on Khaled Hosseini bestselling novel, it transports the Playhouse to Afghanistan. Two childhood friends are torn apart by a terrible incident which will shatter their lives forever. This tale of friendship spanning cultures and continents was originally produced by Nottingham Playhouse and Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse. Northern Broadsides’ ‘For Love or Money’ (26 – 30 Sept) is a new adaptation of Alain-René Lesage’s eighteenth-century comedy Turcaret. A small town in Yorkshire sees a beautiful widow wooed by two suitors, leading to
a rivalrous love triangle. This story of monstrous wealth and whopping lies is directed by Northern Broadside’s Barrie Rutter and adapted by Skipton-born writer Blake Morrison. Pioneering disabled-led theatre company Graeae, in association with Belgrade Theatre Coventry, presents ‘Reasons To Be Cheerful’ (10 – 14 Oct). Celebrating the infectious music of Ian Dury and the Blockheads, this punk rock musical and gritty coming of age tale sees young Vinnie and his mates lay everything on the line to see hero Dury’s sold out gig. ‘The Tin Drum’ (17 – 28 Oct) is a coproduction by West Yorkshire Playhouse, Kneehigh and Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse. This imaginative re-telling of Günter Grass’s classic novel explores love and war as musical satire, through the eyes of its child narrator. 5 WAYS and Waterstones Launch Book Club 5 WAYS @ the Recovery Academy (previously known as Forward Leeds), the alcohol and drug service, has teamed up with Waterstones to launch a new book club for people in treatment.
he ‘Read4Recovery’ book club was suggested by 5 WAYS clients who were keen to find activities to absorb and entertain them away from alcohol and drugs. “Books offer escapism, distraction and a positive way to spend time”, said Gemma Patterson, Recovery Coordinator at 5 WAYS. “They can be a game changer for people with addictions. The 5 WAYS book club offers an insight into how being connected to others in a positive light can give them the motivation and strength to fight an addiction.” The Read4Recovery book club will meet monthly and initially Waterstones will provide books along with suitable book suggestions. The plan is for the club to become self-sufficient while continuing to partner with Waterstones on ideas and recommendations. 5 WAYS @ Recovery Academy is at 43 Westfield Road, LS3 1NQ (Just off Burley Road). www.forwardleeds.co.uk

Becoming a Dementia Friendly Community
Chapel Allerton Celebrates! elieve it or not, 2017 will see the 20th Chapel Allerton Arts Festival (28th August – 3rd September)! It’s an incredible achievement – made all the more amazing when you think that the whole thing is run by volunteers. If you’ve visited the Festival before, you’ll know that it’s more than just a Festival…it’s a showcase for local and emerging talent, it’s a party, it’s seeing old friends and new, it’s a celebration of community, it’s dancing in the streets! So get the dates in your diary because whatever else you thought you were doing at the end of August, you’ll be jumping up and down in Regent Street with everybody else in Chapel Allerton! The week kicks off with the Short Film Festival at Seven Arts, an annual showcase of local filmmaking. There are more events during the week (don’t miss Picnic in the Park), and there’s shedloads of stuff going on all weekend. Catch great music on Regent Street on Friday evening. On Saturday there’ll be family entertainment, food stalls, craft beer, and art and crafts for children – also around Regent Street. Check out too what’s going on at the School of Philosophy and the Methodist Church and Hall. And, make sure you catch the Festival Choir led by
Tess Smith on Saturday afternoon, before a great line-up of performers playing on into the evening. New for 2017 is the Cafe Run on Saturday afternoon – some of the performers will cover a circuit of venues playing a session at each. There’ll be a much larger display of vintage and classic cars with probably one or two vintage and classic owners to chat to as you wander round too. There’ll be jazz and blues in the cafes and bars – at Inkwell, the Mustard Pot, the Woods and at Seven Arts as part of the Village Jazz & Folk Roots Festival - Plus, don’t forget to check out the Open Day at the Snooker Club. On Sunday you’ll be more than welcome to sing with Churches Together for another Festival Hymns in the Street; then later the Village Jazz Festival continues with jazz, blues and salsa into the early evening. For full details, visit chapelallerton. org.uk. Many events are free but you’ll also find a donate button there! The Festival is run entirely by volunteers and if you’d like to help there could still be time to join the stewards (also via the website). This year’s Festival is being supported by the Arts Council, England.
St Edmund’s Parish in Roundhay has been selected by Leeds Older People’s Forum to receive intensive support for the next year to work towards Roundhay becoming a dementia friendly community. Revd Bridget Hawkins will take a lead in this project and will work closely with Maria Florez, who is employed by Leeds Older People’s Forum as their Dementia Friendly Communities Officer. Together they will work with individuals, community groups, businesses and organisations in Roundhay to effect change to benefit those living with dementia, and those who care for them. The Alzheimer’s Society describes a dementia friendly community as: ‘A city, town or village, where people with dementia are understood, respected and supported, and confident that they can contribute to community life. In a dementia friendly community people will be aware of and understand dementia, and people with dementia will feel included and involved and have choice and control over their day to day lives.’ Bridget will be preaching on the subject at St Edmund’s on Sunday 24th September. There will also be an opportunity to meet Maria at the 10am service. If you’d like to know more about this project, or would like to become actively involved, please contact Bridget on 07518 045133 or bridget_ hawkins_bfc@hotmail.com

News From Your Councillors Cllr
DAN COHEN Alwoodley
lwoodley residents will be aware of the Travellers who briefly encamped on Alwoodley Village Green at the beginning of July. Since the travellers moved on, we have been asked what steps are being taken to ensure that the Alwoodley Village Green is kept available and open for its purpose as a facility for all residents to use and enjoy.
Free Entry
Together with Alwoodley Parish Council, the Alwoodley Ward Councillors are investing £15,000 for a low-rise railing (identical to the one currently around the car park next to the Village Green) to stop any unauthorised vehicles driving onto the green. This will ensure that only those vehicles with permission, such as the Council parks and localities team and parish council lengthsman, will be able to drive on it in the future. On a different note, I have had a number of calls this month about rogue traders knocking on the doors of our more vulnerable residents offering to fix drives, cut down trees and fix roofs, then demanding inflated prices for the work, and even trying to get residents to visit cash points to get the money. The simple message is, let’s all keep an eye on more vulnerable neighbours to try to ensure they are not being exploited. Never have any work done without an agreed and accepted written quotation, setting out the job to be done and the standard it is to be done to.
Turning to the roads, our SIDS (Speed Indication Devices) are now in place and operational on King Lane and Shadwell Lane. Have you noticed any impact on the speed of vehicles? Where do you think we should site them next? We’re already compiling the list of the next sites when they move around November – which will be here before you know it. Finally, it would seem that (shock horror!) some people didn’t read my recent North Leeds Life column very well. Despite my mentioning that our local police team would be operating on most of Alwoodley’s main thoroughfares, my police colleagues tell me that a number of vehicles have been stopped for speeding. Speed Enforcement will be continuing during August, so please ease off the gas. Remember, for any and all local issues, Cllr Neil Buckley, Cllr Peter Harrand and myself are here to help.

s another school year comes to an end, young people across Leeds look forward to the Summer holidays. I am pleased to see that here in the north east of the city there is a diverse range of activities and events on offer, thanks to the Inner North East Community Committee granting funding from the Youth Activity Fund (YAF). Whether it is the free Summer Dance Camp for boys and girls aged 8 -11 in Moortown, or the Meanwood Olympics – a day packed with games, crafts, sports and music, there is a fantastic mix of events for children and young people across a range of ages. Youth Activity funding has been made available to provide activities for
those aged 8-17 across Leeds. These include the arts, sports, and culture - enabling young people to have fun, get creative, and have new experiences both after school and during the school holidays. The Inner North East Community Committee covers several wards in the area including Chapel Allerton, Roundhay and Moortown. I am delighted that we can support these activities through this type of funding. For further information about summer events and activities, contact the Communities Team (East North East) on 0113 336 7644, east.north. east@leeds.gov.uk or www.facebook. com/LCCinnerNE
As well as both editions of North Leeds Life, you’ll also find many more interesting stories and events on our website, that have either arrived too late for inclusion, or we simply ran out of room in the magazine. We are adding new stories nearly every day. So don’t miss out!

ctually related more to larks than to the tit family, the Bearded Tit (also known as Bearded Reedling) is an exotic looking feature of reedbeds in eastern and southern England.
Photo: Mike
Richards The name is misleading RSPBfor, whilst the male of this images. small ginger-brown species com does have a drooping black ‘moustache’ pattern on its head, there is no sign of a beard! The male also has a striking blue head, which the female and juvenile lack, but all have a long tail, which they often twitch and fan, even in flight. They are found almost exclusively
in dense reedbeds, clambering about on the reed stems in search of food, which in Summer is insects and beetles, and in Winter is seeds of the common reed. They can be difficult to see, but sometimes announce their presence with a metallic
ping ping call. In April they build a nest in the thickest part of the reedbed, made of reed leaves and other vegetation, and lined with fluffy reed heads. They lay between four and eight eggs, and may raise up to three broods in a season. The Bearded Tit has been badly affected by the historic loss of large reedbeds in the UK, with a UK breeding population of only 630 pairs. However, they have been helped by the work of the RSPB and other organisations to preserve remaining reedbeds and create new habitat.

Swarm at Skelton Grange kelton Grange Environment Centre is celebrating its 25th anniversary with ‘Swarm’ – an exhibition and installations, from 19th August – 16th September. A popular community and education hub managed by The Conservation Volunteers, Skelton Grange is just two miles south of Leeds. Its beautiful eco-building is set in a ten-acre nature reserve reclaimed from a former industrial site, and looks out over a fruit orchard, vegetable gardens, apiary, ponds, woodland and wildflower meadows. Swarm was inspired by bees, wildflowers and the natural environment, using materials reflecting Leeds’ industrial heritage. Laney
Birkhead’s Swarm installation will be at the heart of the exhibition. Visitors will be able to walk inside a ‘hive’ of 50,000 hand printed bees. A documentary film by Paul Harris tells the story of how hundreds of people helped print the bees, and turn them into an art installation. This event will also feature new willow, wood, ceramic and beeswax artworks made for Skelton Grange by schools and community groups, including a ceramic wildflower meadow inspired by the Tower of London poppies, carved spoons of wood harvested from the Skelton Grange nature area, and a record of the site’s wildflowers through the seasons preserved in natural beeswax.
There will also be beautiful art and craft work created by the Swarm collective of twelve local artists and makers in response to the plight of the honeybee and other pollinators - their range of prints, glass, jewellery, ceramics and textiles are truly inspiring. And, there will be talks from Peter Reasbeck on beekeeping (19th August 1pm) and Buglife’s Andrew Cutts on making Leeds a ‘Buzzing City’ (23rd August 6pm). Teas, coffee and gorgeous cake from friendly vegan Leeds bakery, That Old Chestnut will be available. Enjoy some late Summer loveliness in your garden.
Lythrum is an easy to grow border perennial with spikes of flowers of various colours and heights. Many begin flowering in July and will put on a display until late September.
Wonderful plants to enjoy this month It is very common to hear people say that their gardens are no longer interesting in August, or that there is no colour at this time of year, so here are a few suggestions of plants that are looking their magnificent best right now. Lythrum is an easy to grow border perennial with spikes of flowers of various colours and heights depending on the variety. Many begin flowering in July and will put on a display until late September. Mix them with some Monarda or Persicaria amplexicaulis to enjoy hues of red pink, mauve and palest blush. Phlox paniculata are flowering now too and bring the added dimension of sweet scents to borders. If you prefer your flower colour a little hotter then how about some tall copper coloured daisies of Helenium ‘Moorheim Beauty’ with the glowing apricot spires of Kniphofia ‘Tawny King’ or plant Rudbeckia fulgia ‘Goldsturm’ for a sunny splash of bright yellow.
Shrubs to enjoy this month include gorgeous Hydrangeas, which are now available in many forms and colours. Look out for the stunning black stemmed varieties like ‘Zorro’, or delicate little lacy types including Hydrangea paniculata ‘Confetti’ which don’t require much space. Buddleias are in full flower now, providing racemes of bright flowers, wafts of scent, and if that wasn’t enough they also attract clouds of butterflies to the garden. Deadhead them after flowering if you don’t want them to set seed.
Shrubs to enjoy this month include gorgeous Hydrangeas. Look out for the stunning black stemmed varieties like ‘Zorro’
Kitchen Garden Many vegetables are ready to harvest now, with things like courgettes producing prolifically if the weather is warm and they are kept well watered. Pick them young to enjoy them at their best and encourage production to continue. Larger ones can be chopped into long thin strips (or put through a spiralizer) to use like spaghetti or made into fritters. Sow seeds for spring cabbages, lettuces, oriental leaves, kohlrabi, spinach and rocket to keep the plot productive into the Autumn and Winter.
Water and Feed Do make sure that plants are all watered well in dry weather and given a feed now and again especially those growing in containers.

f you have even only a passing fondness for movies and pop music, then you need Edgar Wright’s latest thrill ride in your life. Deliriously exhilarating and sublimely cool, Baby Driver kicks off in high gear and rarely lets up. Not merely a car chase spectacular, it’s also an exuberant jukebox/karaoke musical extravaganza with an all killer, no filler soundtrack. It’s a mainline shot of adrenalized cinematic joy that has deservedly scored the director the biggest US box office hit of his career thus far. Ansel Elgort is the titular Baby, getaway driver extraordinaire who suffers from mild hearing impairment as the result of a car accident in his childhood in which his parents were killed. One might think that such a traumatic formative experience would make you a tad anxious around motor vehicles but quite the contrary; in Baby’s case he’s become preternaturally gifted behind the wheel, his focus and dexterity aided by being hooked up to one of his trusty iPods to drown out the ever-present background buzz of tinnitus. Baby’s skill at tearing away from bank heists and evading the cops has made him something of a lucky charm for local crime boss Doc (Kevin Spacey) who masterminds the heists and assembles various crews, using Baby as the wheels-man each time.
A staple of the crime-thriller genre but usually the preserve of grizzled veteran career
line, which may be why Doc takes his plans for early retirement less than seriously. Baby has his reasons for wanting to get out of the game; having fallen for diner waitress Debora (Lily James) with whom he dreams of hitting the road, and being rattled by a couple of hairy situations on the job brought about by the unhinged, volatile and trigger-happy Bats (Jamie Foxx). Will Baby avoid falling foul of his coworkers, including desperate, hot and heavy couple Buddy (Jon Hamm) and Darling (Eliza Gonzales) and get away clean or will he run out of road? While Baby Driver feels like the kind of film Edgar Wright has been working towards making since the days of Spaced, it also represents something of a departure for the director from his previously established oeuvre

sequences in Hot Fuzz and The World’s End, were so effective because they combined loving action movies of which Wright is obviously enamoured, while demonstrating his keen understanding of the technical nuts and bolts that make such scenes work. Here, the humour takes a back seat, allowing Wright to go full throttle on his action cinema ambitions and it really pays off.
Another key feature that’s integral to Wright’s work is music, most clearly evidenced in his first North American (Canadian) feature, Scott Pilgrim vs The World. As a pseudomusical Baby Driver is very much all about the tunes; there’s foreground or background musical accompaniment to pretty much every scene right from the film’s opening where, as a bank robbery takes place off camera, we stay in the getaway car with Baby, singing along to Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s Bellbottoms. With a smattering of blues-rock and punk, even a little prog, and a plethora of 60’s and 70’s funk and soul; chart hits and deep cuts, every single track is a winner. Music is the pulsing lifeblood of this picture to
the point where even the gunfire of shootout scenes is percussive, the movie simply does not miss a beat. In lieu of an actual, honest to goodness Hollywood musical style dance routine, the chase sequences have cars providing a form of rug-cutting and balletic shape-throwing and, as an extended tracking shot follows an ear-budded Baby strutting and bopping down the street, he’s engaged in a dance duet with the camera itself as it swoops, swirls, dips and dives around him. Wright’s characteristic hyper-kinetic visual style and rapid-fire cutting are present and correct and his camerawork and snappy editing seem even more informed by a sense of rhythm and melody than usual. Baby Driver is likely to be some of the most fun you’ll have in the cinema this year. It looks and sounds terrific, with an infectious energy that’s nigh on impossible to resist. That is, unless you don’t really care for movies or music all that much.

Elkie Brooks at Leeds Grand Black Music Festival 2017 This month the Black Music Festival returns for its third year and folks are buzzing. The annual party has established itself as the fastest growing
‘British Queen of Blues’, singer/song-writer Elkie Brooks is coming to Leeds Grand Theatre on Sunday 29th April, for one night only. Starting out with the bands Dada and Vinegar Joe, husky voiced Brooks made her name as a solo artist in the late 70s and 80s, releasing hit singles including ‘Pearl’s a Singer’, ‘Lilac Wine’, ‘Don’t Cry Out Loud’, ‘Fool (If You Think It’s Over)’, and ‘No More the Fool’, and the top-selling album ‘Pearls’.
independent festival in Europe! s usual the festival features a spectacular line-up with an even wider range of genres including Afrobeat, Reggae and Grime. This year local talent has been nurtured through the #Unsigned programme with phenomenal young performers from Leeds auditioning, attending boot camp and getting ready for the main stage on 27th August. The festival’s three stages are even bigger this year. Headline live acts will grace the main stage while the Beatz N Vibez stage features internationally known DJs who often bring artists along with them. Be sure to check out the surprises they have in store. And, of course, the one and only original Dub man, Mark Millington of Iration Steppas, will be providing the thumping tunes and ground-shaking bass in the Dub Zone.
With fun for all the family, the Kidz Zone, provided by Creative Intentions, has been expanded and will be available for longer. “Every year we have grown bigger and better and this year won’t be any different”, said Heather Nelson, CEO of BHI, organisers of Black Music Festival. “To see the diverse communities coming together to enjoy the various genres of music, the positive vibes, the sweet fragrance of the jerk pans, laughter, seeing old friends and making new ones, all contributes to a fantastic day of ‘One Love’.” For Leeds’ hottest party of the summer head down to the Black Music Festival in Potternewton Park on Sunday 27th August for the good times and great music. Don’t forget your dancing shoes! info@blackmusicfestival.org, www. blackmusicfestival.org
By April 2012, Brooks had released more albums to reach the top 75 of the UK album chart than any other British female artist (later equaled by Kate Bush). Brooks’ UK-wide tour coincides with the release her album ‘Pearls - The Very Best Of’. Her appearance at Leeds Grand Theatre will see her sing all her hits plus newly recorded material. Tickets (£24 - £39) are on sale now.

All our initiatives with young people are a fantastic illustration of the depth of talent that exists in the North of England. We’re always impressed by the dedication and professionalism which the young musicians bring to every project, and with the results they invariably produce.” For further information on Opera North’s youth ensembles, visit operanorth.co.uk/ education/youth or contact education@ operanorth.co.uk. NT Live presents ‘Angels in America’ (Parts 1 and 2) on Saturday 19th August and Saturday 26th August respectively. The highly acclaimed ‘Yerma’ (live screening) starring Billie Piper is on Thursday 31st August. Simon Stone’s radical production of Lorca’s achingly powerful masterpiece is set in contemporary London and tells of a young woman’s desperation to conceive with unthinkable consequences.
John Le Carre - An evening with George Smiley (live streamed) is on

John Le Carre will discuss his career and reflect on the continuing story of his most famous creation, spy George Smiley. On Wednesday 13th September it’s ‘David Gilmour Live in Pompeii’ A screening of two spectacular 2016 shows at the legendary Pompeii Amphitheatre in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.

Jane Tomlinson Appeal’s New Sporting Dinner ormer England defender Danny Mills and Paralympic gold medallist Hannah Cockroft will be among the stars at a ‘sportsman’s dinner with a difference’ to be held in Leeds later this year. The Sporting Social is the latest fundraising event to be launched by the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, which raises money for children’s and cancer charities. A ‘playful, modern twist’ on a traditional sporting dinner, the event will take place on 30th November at The Queen’s Hotel and will be hosted by BBC Look North’s Tanya Arnold. The aim is to provide an evening of anecdotes, entertainment and fun challenges.
“Think of a cross between Graham Norton and A League of Their Own and you’ll be on the right lines”, said Katie Bell, Fundraising Manager, the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. “We want the evening to be informal and relaxed and there’ll be no strict dress code. All you’ll need is a sense of fun and an appetite to support such a fantastic cause.” Ticket are £50 each, or £450 for a table of 10, and are available via Katie@ janetomlinsonappeal.com
Gareth Southgate Congratulates Wigton Moor on Funding Success igton Moor JFC was recently awarded a £3,000 Grow the Game grant, attracting praise from England Manager Gareth Southgate. The grant will provide a boost to grassroots football in Alwoodley, and is paving the way for Wigton Moor JFC to create and develop new junior boys and girls teams at U-7 – U-9 levels, providing kit and equipment and allowing for the training of football coaches. Wigton Moor JFC is committed to providing football for boys and girls aged 7 – 18, and are looking to set up new junior teams every year to keep a steady flow of youngsters coming into the club. “I am so pleased that Wigton Moor has secured this Grow the Game grant”, said Gareth Southgate. “The club
has worked very hard with the West Riding County FA and the Football Foundation to get more local people playing football so that they can enjoy the many physical and mental benefits that come with playing regular sport.” Grow the Game is a £2.5m programme funded by The FA and the Football Foundation. It awards grants to grassroots football clubs that wish to create new teams, especially amongst under-represented groups. “I’m absolutely delighted that Wigton Moor JFC has managed to secure this funding”, said Sam Hughes, Club Treasurer. “It should help the club go from strength to strength, and provide a platform for many more North Leeds boys and girls to enjoy the great game of football.”
Wheels 4 Fun Celebrates its First Anniversary heels 4 Fun disability cycling group is celebrating its first anniversary. The group meets Saturdays from 11am – 1pm at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, and riders with a range of physical challenges have participated, many of whom have made amazing progress. Michael had had a stroke and was unable to ride when he first attended the group last year. “I saw a flyer for the group in Chapel Allerton and attended the very next day”, he said. “Everybody was friendly, enthusiastic and positive. I was elated when within a couple of hours I was riding a trike.
I was elated when within a couple of hours I was riding a trike
I have hardly missed a session since and I can now ride a standard bicycle again. It is difficult to express the feeling of achievement and progress that learning to cycle again can produce. I’ve also made many new friends.” Jon was a keen cyclist before he suffered a head injury after a fall from his bike. He has also progressed from a tricycle via a tandem and a balance bike (small bike with no pedals) to being able to ride a normal bike with assistance. The group is entirely volunteer run and is always in need of new volunteers to help with running the group. It was recently awarded a grant from Inner North East Community Committee to buy a new recumbent tricycle. Anyone interested in riding or volunteering should contact Trish on 0113 269 5028 or trishcunnison@gmail.com

Photo Club Focuses on Local Church Equipped with an assortment of cameras, camera phones and iPads nine members of Allerton Church of England Primary School’s Photography Club have just completed a very special assignment.
Exciting Programme of Summer Activities Following extensive consultation with young people, the Inner North East Community Committee, which covers the wards of Chapel Allerton, Moortown and Roundhay, agreed to use money from its Youth Activity Fund (YAF) to put on activities throughout the Summer. At a Youth Summit held at the Mandela Centre in January, young people were asked what activities they would like to see in their area. A ‘Top 10’ wish list of activities was created and local organisations were invited to apply for funding to support activities during the summer break. Seven of the ‘Top 10’ activities identified have been included. For details, contact the Communities Team on 0113 336 7629 or east.north. east@leeds.gov.uk.
ith the encouragement of Revd Sharon Kaye, Team Vicar at St John’s Church, Moor Allerton, the group of Y-5 and Y-6 pupils, who meet after school every Thursday, has helped to create a montage of striking images of St John’s which will take centre stage on the church’s website. “The children were given free reign both inside the church and in the graveyard and they have produced some really good pictures”, said Allerton staff member Sarah Cattrall, who helps run the club. “What’s particularly pleasing is that they all used their imagination – rather than producing a collection of very similar
images of, say, the front of the church, or a wide shot of its interior, the finished shots are full of variation.” Revd Sharon couldn’t have been more pleased to welcome her young visitors. “I already do a lot of work with the school, and here at church we’re always looking for ways to keep our website up to date and lively”, she said. “So when I was asked if the Photo Club could come along I said ‘yes absolutely’. The pictures that the children have produced are fantastic. The montage itself features two black and white and four colour images and it was fascinating to see how each of the children approached the assignment from a different perspective.”
As well as both editions of North Leeds Life, you’ll also find many more interesting stories and events on our website, that have either arrived too late for inclusion, or we simply ran out of room in the magazine. We are adding new stories nearly every day. So don’t miss out!
Roundhay School Takes Top Honours in Stock Market Challenge tock Market Challenge, the Maths in Action project for schools, held at Leeds Beckett University, is a first direct funded initiative, delivered in partnership with Leeds Beckett and Global Investor Simulations. The event involved 100 Year-8 and Year-9 students from Allerton Grange, Allerton High School, Cardinal Heenan RC High School, Castleford Academy, Guiseley School, Halifax Academy, Laisterdyke Academy, Roundhay School, and Ryburn Valley High School. Working in teams, their task was to manage a fund of shares and foreign currency by interpreting information and investing in the markets. The team with the highest total fund at the closing bell of each competition was the winner, and Roundhay School came out on top.
The challenge enables students to apply their knowledge of mathematics and business, and helps them to develop their communication, problem solving, decision making, teambuilding and negotiating skills. It aims to prepare them for the world of work, with the capabilities and confidence to handle future education and career decisions, and supports the financial services sector in its need to create a worldclass competitive workforce. “Stock Market Challenge allows major employers like first direct to work with local schools and communities and gives students an insight into the wide range of higher education opportunities available”, said Sylvia Barber, Widening Participation Project Officer at Leeds Beckett. “It’s essential that we focus on developing the qualifications and skills of
our young people, to ensure the appropriate skills base is in place to take advantage of job opportunities now and in the future. Initiatives like this provide us with an opportunity to introduce the university to young people whilst also helping them to consider a high value qualification in finance, banking or accounting.” Colleagues from first direct participated as ‘traders’ to recreate a ‘real time’ trading floor. The bank also provided the prizes and was on hand to provide teachers and students with guidance and information about opportunities in the sector.

As usual, The Royal Armouries has a fantastic range of activities running all Summer. But the centrepiece of its programme is their exciting ‘Winged Hussars’ – the Polish Hussar Horse Show, which runs twice a day (12 noon & 3pm) from 26th – 28th August. This spectacular horse show features a crack team of fast-riding, sharp-shooting, sabre-rattling cavalrymen from Poland. The military skills of the Winged Hussars, who were considered to be the elite of the 17th-century Polish cavalry, are spectacular. The show includes displays of mounted drill exercises, showcasing the horsemen’s skills with sabres, lances and pistols. “These guys ride their horses so fast you’d think they’d stolen them!” commented Andy Deane, the Royal Armouries’ own Knight-in-Residence. The official name of this amazing group of riders is Hussar Banner of the Marshall of Pomorskie Voivodeship. They are the largest and most experienced re-enactment society bringing the exploits of Poland’s 17th-century ‘Winged Hussars’ to life, and are often invited to participate in official pageants marking important events in Poland’s history, such as National Independence Day, as well as being in high demand for film and television work. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown & Roundhay areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
