Following an eventful 2016, 2017 looks like it is building up to be a challenging year that will demand that people stand up and be counted – but let’s not go there! Let’s concentrate on our little patch…be positive, get involved, encourage talent, look out for older people, and don’t allow yourselves to be bullied by anyone! We will continue to try and bring you local news – so don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. January is a traditional time to start anew – take up a new hobby or course, pledge to get in that 30 minutes a day exercise, volunteer, or join a group. As usual, there is plenty lined up on the arts and entertainment front this month – from amateur dramatics to major World Premières like Northern Ballet’s ‘Casanova’;

classical guitar concerts to internationally famous orchestras. Leeds has received an award for its work on supporting refugees; Stephen Zwolinski, a researcher at the School of Sport at Leeds Beckett, gives some helpful hints for starting and sticking to your new fitness regime; and West Yorkshire Playhouse announces its new Spring programme.

MADAME LILIAN STILES-ALLEN (1890-1982) CONCERT SOPRANO AND TEACHER

When Lilian Stiles-Allen came to live in Leeds in 1941 escaping the London Blitz, she had a long and distinguished career behind her. She had worked with some of the great conductors and composers of the day, performed on the concert stage, at the Proms, on radio and in recordings. Leeds had been the scene of her first real success and always welcomed her, so she chose it as her new home ‘remembering the city’s music and culture and the kindly hospitality of Yorkshire folk’. While here she coached the young Julie Andrews, who has left us an affectionate memoir of her beloved ‘Madame’. he was born Lilian Elizabeth Allen (later adding her mother’s maiden name of Stiles) in 1890 in Marylebone, London, the daughter of a master butcher – ‘an ordinary family’ she said. As a child she dreamt of being a ballerina, but instead was encouraged to sing. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music, and afterwards in Germany, winning prizes for her rich soprano voice. She had the vocal power and range for opera but not the physique – too short and plump – so she focussed on the concert stage. At first she struggled to find work, even singing in music halls, once on the bill with performing elephants as the star turn (she enjoyed telling this story!) Her first real break came in Leeds in 1915, when she was just 25. In November she sang with the Leeds Choral Union in an Elgar concert conducted by Sir Elgar himself, praised for the golden quality of her voice. She returned in December as a soloist in ‘Messiah’ alongside the formidable Dame Clara Butt, and was picked out by the Yorkshire Post’s influential critic, Herbert Thompson, for her outstanding performance. She never looked back. In December 1917 she was chosen as one of the soloists at a great commemorative concert at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate the heroes of Mons and Ypres, before the King and Queen and Queen Alexandra. At this deeply emotional event (only English music was played) it was she who sang the closing National Anthem, leading the huge chorus. Her voice was much admired for its sweetness, range, and dramatic power. During the 1920s/30s she was in demand as a soloist, performing round the country and appearing in Scotland, Ireland, later in the USA. She specialised in oratorio and operatic arias, and regularly performed

in Sir Malcolm Sargent’s spectacular staged productions of Coleridge-Taylor’s ‘Hiawatha’ at the Albert Hall. From 1923 she featured in early radio broadcasts from 2LO (the original London station), often with Sir Henry Wood at the Promenade concerts. Later she made gramophone recordings with Edison Bell Electron Records, including in 1938 the first recording of Vaughan-Williams’ ‘Serenade to Music’. Small and stout as she was, she had a dramatic style – long skirts, a fabulous velvet cloak and beret, a cane, plenty of jewellery. Her personal life was kept very private. She was married three times –

her first husband almost certainly killed in WW1 leaving her a young widow, like so many others. When she came to live in Leeds it was with her third husband Sidney Jeffries-Harris and a son, Michael. She bought a historic old farmhouse at 19 Shire Oak Road, Headingley, as their new home (now converted into cottages and called Corson Court). She still performed occasionally – for instance at the reopening of the Leeds Museum after it had been bombed – but she focussed now on teaching. Her most famous pupil was the young Julie Andrews who would come up to Headingley to stay with ‘Madame’. She was a rigorous teacher, whose coaching had a great impact on the budding star. In her memoirs ‘Madame’ comes alive – imposing, but also gentle and kind. She remained Julie Andrews’ mentor throughout her early career. Around 1956 Lilian Stiles-Allen moved from Leeds to an earlier home of hers, a country cottage near Sevenoaks in Kent. She generously donated her Headingley house to the privately-run Yorkshire College of Music and Drama which had lost its premises in town; the College remained there until 2011, familiar to many Leeds music students. Lilian Stiles-Allen died in 1982 in Tunbridge Wells, aged 92. But through the magic of the internet, you can still hear her golden voice, singing in the ‘Serenade to Music’ and speaking in an extract from her 1971 BBC interview for ‘Desert Island Discs’.

Left Bank Leeds Wins Heritage Lottery Support Left Bank Leeds was recently awarded £76,200 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the project ‘A Building of Significance’. The project will span two years and centres on the Grade II listed former church building. It will celebrate, share and preserve what is considered one of the best examples of the work of architect Temple Moore. hanks to National Lottery players the project will enable Left Bank Leeds to employ a part-time Volunteer Manager; offer more volunteering opportunities; provide volunteers with greater infrastructure and support; run a monthly lecture series on local architecture; host regular reminiscence events to capture memories about the building via groups and afternoon teas; install a timeline; present an art exhibition exploring St Margaret of Antioch (the name of the former church); and install a new heating system.

“We are absolutely delighted to receive the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund”, said Courtney Spencer, Director, Left Bank Leeds. “This project marks a great step in the development of Left Bank Leeds. It will help us share our amazing building with more people, enhance the visitor experience and teach people about the heritage and significance of our building.”

Shortlist Announced for Leeds Architecture Awards The 2016 Leeds Architecture Awards look set to be the biggest and best yet - with nearly 80 nominations over seven categories. he winners will be announced in March at a ceremony in Leeds Town Hall. Categories include Best New Building, Best Conserved Building and Best Temporary Works, as well as a People’s Choice Award. This year also sees a special young people’s award, selected by a panel of young people who will choose their favourite building from this year’s award winners. Organised by Leeds City Council and Leeds Chamber Property Forum, the awards were set up to promote and showcase best practice in architecture and design in the city. This year 22 Street Lane, Mary’s Tree and Oakwood Clock are among the schemes shortlisted. These North Leeds entries are joined by 30 other developments from across the city. The judging panel, chaired by guest assessor Kit Martin, visited each of the shortlisted schemes before deciding on the winners in each of the main categories. Kit has spent a lifetime conserving historic buildings and was awarded a CBE in 2012 for services to conservation and ‘in acknowledgement of the lasting and immeasurably valuable contribution to the field of heritage regeneration’. He has rescued a series of major country houses from dereliction in England and Scotland and was the first Director of The Prince of Wales’s Phoenix Trust.

The judging panel also includes representatives from the Leeds Society of Architects, Leeds Civic Trust, Institute of Historic Buildings Restoration, the Landscape Institute and Leeds Beckett University. A range of criteria will be used to assess each of the shortlisted schemes, including appearance, sustainability, fitness for purpose, relation to setting, appropriate use of materials, consistency of design, enhancement of the area and lasting qualities. Adel Neighbourhood Forum A lot of people in Adel appear to care about the future of the green field land opposite the Parish Church. Its setting could be changed irrevocably if a proposal by Hallam Land to build 100 houses and allocate land for a school is approved. A major concern is the additional traffic generated from new housing developments, adding to congestion on the busy A660. The only other site access runs through a newly built estate onto Church Lane. Some 100 residents attended a public meeting organised by Adel Forum and Adel Association in November to express their views to representatives from Leeds City Council. Since then the Council has received over 100 objections. The Forum has also been considering plans for the old East Moor Reformatory site and supports plans to provide housing, which could lead to a reduction on other Adel green field sites. City Planners say they cannot adjust the figures to reflect this. Leeds College of Art Looks to an Exciting Future

Over the last year, Leeds College of Art has celebrated its 170th Year with a variety of events - from exhibitions and talks, to parties and stunning murals. The College commissioned George Addy, a current BA (Hons) Illustration student, to design a special anniversary mural at Leeds Train Station. The design captured the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diverse creative scene, illustrating sculptures by artists like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth (both of whom studied at the College), as well as institutions like, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds College of Art, The Corn Exchange, and Hyde Park Picture House. George and a team of final year students (Melissa Banks, Ian Fulcher, Tilly Butters and Charlotte Curnick) spent a whole day painting the impressive, six-metre mural. There was also a unique, live exhibition of specially made gowns featuring recent alumni artwork and modelled by students wearing gowns with artwork printed on the back representing each of the creative courses that the College offers. The College is looking forward to an exciting future. Plans are in place to become the only specialist arts university in the North of England. A major expansion of its Blenheim Walk site is currently underway, creating a 6,000m2 building to meet the current and future needs of its students. This will allow the College to create a more diverse mix of educational programmes, including film and popular music. Due to be completed by the Summer 2018, the new building will provide the College with an opportunity to engage more with the local and wider communities of Leeds by creating a new entrance, public exhibition gallery, coffee shop and performance theatre.

‘Learning and Participation’ at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance provides access to dance for everyone. Craig Ogden Plays Horsforth orld renowned classical guitarist Craig Ogden returns to The Grove Methodist Church on Town Street, Horsforth for another widely anticipated concert on Sunday 19th February at 3pm. This will be the third concert that Craig has performed here and this year it will be in aid of the Leeds Centre for Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma. A well known name to listeners of Classic FM and Radio 3, and with a string of No.1 CDs to his name, Australian-born Craig is one of the most acclaimed classical guitarists of his generation. He has an international career as a recitalist, recording artist and concert soloist with orchestras

around the world. He also regularly collaborates with many of the UK’s top artists and ensembles. Craig is President of Leeds Symphony Orchestra, Head of Guitar at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, Visiting Lecturer at London’s Royal College of Music, Adjunct Fellow of the University of Western Australia, Associate Artist of The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, and Director of the Dean & Chadlington Summer

Northern Ballet Presents World Première of Casanova Northern Ballet has gained an enviable reputation for creating strikingly emotional and dramatic narrative dance theatre. Its next new production, ‘Casanova’, will have its world première at Leeds Grand Theatre in March and is set to enhance that reputation even further. ommissioned by Artistic Director David Nixon, ‘Casanova’ will be the first full-length ballet by award-winning choreographer Kenneth Tindall. Set in 18th century Venice, it tells the story of Giacomo Casanova, the infamous Italian adventurer, who led a controversial life, consumed by his desires. He dabbled in careers as violinist, alchemist, spy and church cleric and had a particular penchant for gambling and women. His exploits lead him into a whirlwind of scandal and excess, leading to imprisonment and exile.

Kenneth started researching the show about a year ago, contacting Ian Kelly, actor/playwright, Casanova biographer and 18th Century specialist. “Obviously the Casanova story is too vast to tell in its entirety”, said Kenny. “Casanova wrote 12 volumes of memoirs, but I didn’t want it to be an old man’s memoirs. Working with Ian we have been able to cherry pick some of the best bits, show a side of him that had not been widely represented, and experience this man in a different way. This is a true story that is so sensational you won’t believe it’s real – it shows Casanova as so much more than the infamous lover we know. “It has been exciting to work with Ian, to bring someone in from the world of theatre, and to learn what we could and couldn’t do, breaking some rules along the way.” This will be one of the biggest shows Northern Ballet has ever staged. a fresh approach working with someone from theatre. Chris is also an 18th Century specialist. As we go to press the costumes are being prototyped, styles settled upon and fabrics chosen. Inspired by the period, when styles were rich and heavy, Chris has had to also take the movement of the dancers into account. For the music, Kenneth commissioned Los Angeles-based modern classical and film composer Kerry Muzzey who recently wrote the score for the documentary film ‘The Seer’ produced by Robert Redford and Terrence Malick, and whose piece ‘Looking Back’ was a recurring theme on the TV show ‘GLEE’. Together they have poured over the story scene by scene via Skype, discussing various themes for the different characters. The whole production promises to be visually and aurally stunning. “I am delighted to give Kenneth the opportunity to create his first full-length ballet with the Company where he spent the majority of his performing career and where he first began to choreograph”, said David

Nixon. “Casanova’s story is one of sex, romance, intrigue and scandal and I am looking forward to surprising our audiences and challenging the idea of Casanova as nothing more than a prolific lover.” Kenneth Tindall’s previous credits for Northern Ballet include one-act ballets Project #1, Luminous Junc�ture and The Architect. He was nominated for Best Classical Choreography and Emerging Artist Award at the 2015 National Dance Awards, and recently collaborated with celebrated artist Linder Sterling and the British Art Show on Children of the Mantic Stain. Two Great Orchestras at Leeds Town Hall

In January, Leeds Town Hall hosts two great orchestras – The Hallé on 14th January with conductor Markus Stenz and horn soloist Laurence Rogers; and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, conducted by Vasily Petrenko and featuring pianist Teo Gheorghiu.

he Hallé will present Mozart’s Symphony No 41, Strauss’s Horn Concerto No 1 and Schumann’s Symphony No 4. Mozart’s Symphony No 41 was his last but perhaps most exciting symphony. It was nicknamed ‘Jupiter’ because of its marchlike imperial nature. Woody Allen claimed in his 1979 film ‘Manhattan’ that “the second movement of the Jupiter Symphony makes life worth living”. But the finale, where he juggles five musical themes that he unites Pictured: Laurence at the very end, is perhaps one of Mozart’s Rogers, Halle Orchestra cleverest pieces of writing. When Strauss composed his first horn concerto aged just nineteen, little did he know it would become the most performed horn concerto of the nineteenth century. The three movements are linked together by entrancing orchestral accompaniment, showcasing the full range of the godfather of the brass family. Originally composed in 1841 as a Symphonic Fantasy, Schumann’s fourth and final symphony wasn’t published until he’d heavily revised it ten years later. The original score was eventually published, championed by Brahms. Now widely performed, this work bridges the classical period and the then emerging romantic style. The Liverpool Philharmonic’s programme features Britten, Schubert/ Liszt and Shostakovich. Taken from his opera ‘Peter Grimes’, Britten’s ‘Four Sea Interludes’ were performed in concerts even before the opera’s premiere. Here we hear Liszt’s popular transcription of the work for piano and orchestra. Shostakovich’s Symphony No 12 was dedicated to Lenin. The first movement quotes revolutionary songs and motifs from Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. The second shows Lenin’s countryside quarters, the third recounts the shots that triggered the revolution and the fourth entitled ‘The Dawn of Humanity’ draws the symphony to a close, combining a funeral march with a jubilant celebratory theme. Leeds Arts Centre Presents ‘The Weir’ n an isolated rural pub near Sligo, Brendan, Jack and Jim are enjoying their usual nightly drink, out of the storm raging outside. Their peace is broken by Finbar, an ex-local who has just sold a nearby house to Valerie, a divorcee from Dublin, and is showing her around the area. The men start to tell stories of the local ‘Fairy Folk’, but if they are trying to frighten Valerie they are disappointed. Her reaction stuns them, and she tells them a story more frightening than any of theirs.

The Weir by Conor McPherson won the 1999 Laurence Olivier award for Best New Play. An atmospheric piece, it explores the relationship between the characters and their location in a very compelling way. McPherson’s gift for dialogue and idiom is seldom surpassed and the action of the play draws you in as if you were sitting in the bar yourself. The Leeds Arts Centre production of ‘The Weir’ is at the Carriageworks Theatre, Millenium Square, from 1st – 4th February at 7.30pm. Directed by Ken Taylor, who directed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in their Play for a Nation production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (2016), it promises to be a memorable theatrical experience.

Leeds Youth Opera Presents Two Fantastic Shows eeds Youth Opera (LYO) will present two wonderful shows in the New Year. LYO has split its members into two age groups – the over-19s will perform Benjamin Britten’s haunting chamber opera ‘Turn of the Screw’ in January; and the under-19s will perform ‘Les Miserables’ (schools edition) in February. The ‘Turn of the Screw’ is a ghost story like no other; a tale of good versus evil, natural versus supernatural, corruption versus innocence, with music that creates an overwhelming feeling of intense claustrophobia. Its dramatic power has a shattering impact. Set against the backdrop of 19thcentury France, ‘Les Misérables’ tells a

story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice, revolution and redemption. It is the story of Jean Valjean, a prisoner who breaks parole, and the police inspector who hunts him down, and is set in a world that is wretchedly poor, during a student uprising. Leeds Youth Opera brings together young people with an interest in singing who wish to improve their singing skills, gain confidence, and create dramatic characters through opera and musical theatre. They work with a professional artistic team in a friendly and enjoyable way. “This season will give some of our younger members the opportunity to take on principal parts, and will give our

Student and Lecturer Another Nominated for Renowned Book Award Ayckbourn A student and a lecturer from Leeds Trinity University are in contention for the same prize after both were nominated for a prestigious children’s writing award.

hD student Liz Flanagan and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing Martyn Bedford are both among this year’s international nominations for the 2017 Carnegie Medal – awarded to the writer of an outstanding book for children and young people. Martyn, who is Liz’s PhD supervisor, was nominated for his latest teen novel ‘Twenty Questions for Gloria’, whilst Liz was selected for ‘Eden Summer’, a novel written for her Creative Writing PhD. “I’m thrilled and delighted that ‘Eden Summer’ has been nominated”, said Liz. “The Carnegie Medal is the most prestigious award in the children’s book world, so to be nominated is such a huge honour. What makes it even more special is that the 2017 nominations include many of my favourite books from this year, really extraordinary books, so I’m over the moon to have my novel listed alongside them.” The Carnegie Medal is unique in that the titles are chosen solely by library professionals, for ‘outstanding literary quality’. Liz’s entry is a young adult novel about a girl called Jess who turns up at school to learn that her best friend, Eden, has gone missing. As Jess searches for Eden, the reader learns through flashbacks what terrible events both girls have experienced. “The inspiration for the story came partly from my home town of Hebden Bridge. But I was also very interested in thinking about friendship and resilience, and how we survive difficult things”, said Liz. “It’s a strange thing to be up for the

same award as Martyn with my first novel. It speaks highly of the excellent calibre of the Creative Writing department at Leeds Trinity, which is attracting writers working in a wide variety of literary genres.” Martyn, an award-winning novelist who has been nominated three times for the Carnegie Medal, said: “It’s smashing for Liz and I to be in contention for the same prize. It’s a real honour for both of us and for Leeds Trinity.” Martyn’s book, ‘Twenty Questions for Gloria’, is the story of a bored teenage girl who falls for the renegade new boy at school and decides to go on the run with him. The Playhouse Presents Another Packed Programme for Spring/Summer 2017 West Yorkshire Playhouse’s Spring/Summer season brings together the city’s urgent and intimate stories, creating collaborations with exciting creative talent from across the UK, staging fresh new work alongside celebrated classics. he season opens with Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion (4 - 25 Feb), a radical, new co-production with Headlong and Nuffield Southampton Theatres exploring one of the most celebrated comedies of the 20th century. Director Sam Pritchard scrutinises class identity and social mobility in a digital era and asks how much our voices still define who we are. Adapted from Mark Haddon’s best-selling book, it tells the story of Christopher Boone (15) who has Asperger’s Syndrome and an extraordinary brain; he is exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. Christopher has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and distrusts strangers but when he is under suspicion for killing Mrs Shear’s dog his detective work takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

Adel & Wharfedale Ward Selective Review of Council’s Core Strategy & Review of Housing Numbers The focus of the selective review will be on a number of areas including updating the housing requirement and an update on affordable housing. The population projections have been in decline since the 2008 projection, which informed the core strategy. It is now agreed that there needs to be a review of the numbers. One consequence of the 70,000 target has been a failure to deliver the annual 3,660 housing target.

So many people now are just getting by. One of the ways in which we could offer people a better quality of life is through public investment in housing. A council house building renaissance along with development by other social landlords and the private sector is essential, not only for the Government to achieve its ambition for 200,000 new homes per year, but also to improve the lives of those struggling to pay rent. Of the alternative ways of boosting infrastructure investment, housing has the clear advantage of generating income through rent, which would cover the costs of management and maintenance of the new assets. The programme would benefit all age groups and lead to significant improvements in wellbeing, health, educational attainment and ability to access work.

This has contributed to the Council not being able to demonstrate a five year land supply. In Leeds the outstanding capacity on sites with planning permission is 18,330 units, with 2,170 units under construction and 16,160 yet to start. There is also capacity for 7,547 units on allocated sites – contributing to a total outstanding capacity of 25,863 units. An independent report sets a starting point for housing numbers at 2,600 homes per annum and 41,600 in total. This is a benchmark figure and the report notes that the range for annual delivery is between 3,100 and 4,000 when taking into account factors such as internal migration, and household assumptions. It should be noted that this is still at least 700 fewer houses per year than in the Core Strategy from 2017/18 to 2027/28 and at most 1,600 fewer houses annually.

Everyone should have the right to a decent, affordable home - whether you can afford to buy or need to rent But local authorities need more powers, and further devolution. Leeds City Council has a policy to prioritise brownfield development, but the National Policy Planning Framework leaves little voice to local concerns, allowing developers to cherry pick green field sites yet turn down brownfield inner city sites where we desperately need the housing. This often leads to the types of houses being built that we don’t need, in places where we don’t need it. Everyone should have the right to a decent, affordable home whether you can afford to buy or need to rent. In one of the richest countries in the World, it is a disgrace that we have not managed to achieve that goal. Headingley Councillors are holding a public meeting on Thursday January 26th, 7pm in the New Headingley Club, 56 St Michael’s Road, to discuss housing policy, with both speakers and an open forum, to discuss what we can do both nationally and locally to resolve this problem.

Next month will see the latest consultation on the site allocations plan, which is how the council decides which areas of land in the city will be used for new housing, employment and leisure. The consultation will continue for a full six weeks, and during this time you can have your say on the Council’s plan to build 70,000 new homes in the city. Weetwood councillors have always objected to this target, as it was set using old population growth figures that were far too high. Now that the Oﬃce of National Statistics has reduced its population estimates, we have put pressure on the Council to lower their housing numbers and they have agreed to undertake a review, which we welcome. However, this does not

Leeds Receives Award for Innovative Work Supporting Refugees An innovative Leeds City Council project providing a wide range of support to refugees and migrants, recently received a prestigious European award. n claiming the EuroCities’ ‘Participation’ Award, the Leeds Migrant Access Project (MAP) was praised for its work in empowering migrant communities to support themselves, harnessing their skills, knowledge and commitment. Representing 130 cities across Europe, judges of the Eurocities network, which aims to improve people’s quality of life by sharing knowledge and good practice, reserved special praise for how the city has worked with refugees and partners to promote community cohesion. Developed in partnership with the council’s commissioning team, Touchstone Community Development Service and Feel Good Factor, MAP provides a living map that gives refugees and migrants up-to-date information on the services that are available in their communities. Trained people from migrant communities, who speak English as well as a range of community languages, lead on this work. This not only benefits refugees and migrants, but also helps services provide effective support, and reduces the number of people going to the wrong service or not getting any support at all. It provides an opportunity to talk to those affected, learn what they need and develop community-led solutions.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch The next RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch will take place from 28th – 30th January 2017. This is the biggest event of its kind in the world, with over half a million households taking part every year. It is a chance for you to find out which birds visit your garden, and also to contribute to a piece of ‘citizen science’, helping the RSPB and other organisations monitor the health and welfare of our wildlife.

Each one can make a difference to wildlife, from providing nectarrich plants, to bird boxes, ponds and feeders. We’ve lost more than half our House Sparrows and about three-quarters of our Starlings. But it isn’t all doom and gloom. Blue Tit numbers have risen by 20% and the Woodpigeon population has increased by a whopping 800%. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, all you have to do is either visit the RSPB website and use the online counting tool to enter the birds and animals you see over a period of one hour during the weekend, or record your sightings with pen and paper, and send the results to the RSPB. Only record the highest number of any species that you see at one time, not the total over the hour, or some individuals may get recorded more than once. CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 118 MINS im Jarmusch, that hip maestro of the droll and understated, has done what he does best here and turned in a last minute entry for my list of favorite films of 2016. This is a gentle, meditative slice of life picture that is a pure, uncomplicated pleasure to watch. Adam Driver plays Paterson, a bus driver in Paterson, New Jersey (the fact he shares a name with his hometown is just one of those quirky coincidences) and the film follows him over the course of a week as he goes about his daily life. Paterson’s world is one of routine with little variation. Each day he wakes around the same time, walks to the bus depot, drives his shift after which he returns home to his beautiful wife, Laura (a delightful performance by Golshifteh Farahani). Later in the evening Paterson takes their bulldog, Marvin, for a walk around the neighborhood, stopping off for beer at a local bar where he shares easygoing banter with the owner and fellow regulars. Throughout his day Paterson writes poetry, jotting down in a notebook his musings on life’s minutiae and the unassuming beauty of the everyday. Laura, believing Paterson to be a great undiscovered talent, encourages him to try and publish, to get his poems out into the world but he seems content with writing for its own sake. Laura, meanwhile, pursues a number of her own creative outlets

including interior decorating, baking, custom fashion and her latest passion; learning the guitar and following her dream of becoming a country singer. The mutual support and appreciation the couple share regarding their respective artistic lives is one of the many touching features of the film. There are films in which things happen and then there are films which happen to you, which, without the momentum of narrative thrust or a dramatic hook, have the effect of a wave washing over you rather than forcing you to the edge of your seat. As with much of the director’s work, Paterson is clearly in the latter category. I don’t think any of Jarmusch’s films could ever be described as ‘action packed’. That’s not to say, however, that watching these kinds of films is an entirely passive endeavor, they can provide an immersive experience and an insightful observation of the human condition if one can recalibrate the expectations we have of mainstream cinema entertainment. Yes, very little of note actually happens in Paterson but, like the film’s central character, the viewer quickly becomes reconciled to this fact and is fine with it. Watching Paterson one finds themselves relieved that nothing much

is happening, so seductive is the film’s amiable charm. They say that drama is conflict. Well, there’s little of either to be found here. In terms of dramatic high points or moments of fraught tension; let’s see … Paterson’s bus breaks down at one point, elsewhere there’s an almost instantly diffused barroom altercation, but generally Paterson’s life goes on in its pleasantly acceptable, mostly unremarkable way. As I’ve said, due to cinematic conventions we’re preconditioned to expect certain things from movies; if we see a repetitive routine we assume therein lies simmering frustration and resentment against which the protagonist will surely rebel, if we’re shown a warm, loving relationship we suspect this can’t be the whole story and trouble in paradise is bound to be on the way. Much of our time in the cinema is spent waiting for the other shoe to drop. Refreshingly, Paterson upends our assumptions and sidesteps cliché by saying simply “what you see is what you get”. Suitably for a film with poetry at its heart, through tone, pacing and deft direction, Jarmusch imbues the picture with a lyrical lightness that approaches the sublime. I’ve long considered Adam Driver a rising talent to keep an eye on and this is surely some of his best work to date. His Paterson is portrayed with a zen-like sense of stoicism and calm, a performance so unforced, so natural and free of contrivance, and of such appealing humanity that it effortlessly and invitingly draws the audience into its world. After a truly horrendous year marked by numerous deaths of the great and good and harrowing political and social tumult, Paterson; a film that draws our attention to the subtle poetic beauty of the everyday, in which people treat one another with kindness and where nothing terrible happens, is really a tonic. It feels like the film we need right now.

Tom has devoted his years away from performing and recording to climate change related roles at both Leeds universities. Last year his daughter was diagnosed with MS, a devastating neurological condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. “It’s terrible to see your own laid low by a currently incurable disease”, said Tom. “But it seems a breakthrough is tantalising close, and the MS Society has been both a godsend and lifeline. My son-in-law raised thousands by undertaking mammoth walks – which gave me the idea of performing some benefit gigs.” Appearing under the name ‘Tom Bliss and the Burning Bridges’ (which

Keepin g Your Eyes on the Prize Making Physical Activity Look and Feel Easier

Starting a fitness program is a ubiquitous New Year’s resolution, often accompanied by motivational slogans like ‘pump some iron’, ‘pound the pavement’, ‘no pain, no gain’ and ‘feel the burn’. The reality is that in just about every walk of life, ‘feeling the burn’ is probably the last thing you want to do, and will often require medical intervention once achieved! We are forever being told how to train like Usain Bolt or Jessica Ennis-Hill, but why would you want too? Even elite level athletes don’t train like that all year round. So rather than thinking in terms of Olympic achievement, we should just try to walk before we can sprint.

The New Year brings the best of intentions to stick to new exercise regimes. We tell ourselves ‘this is my year to get back in to shape’. But our new year’s resolutions are often broken before they really begin, leaving us befuddled as to how to start and maintain any newly acquired exercise behaviours. We are bombarded with tips about how to do it but, let’s face it, if they worked, we wouldn’t be making the same resolution year after year. Why should we even bother? Well, at the required amount and intensity (i.e. moderate to vigorous), physical activity can keep us fit and healthy as we get older, especially when compared to being sedentary (inactive). Doing 150-300 minutes of moderate physical activity each week can even reduce mortality risk by up to 30%. Moreover, just as there are profound physical advantages to being active as we age, there are substantial cognitive advantages too. Daily physical activity is important at all ages, whatever form it takes. Active lifestyles are key to health and longevity. Whether it involves walking, jogging or running is not

important, ambulation generally underpins a healthy society. In terms of what we should be doing, put simply, we should do as much as possible! The general rule of thumb is that something is better than nothing and to a point, more is better still. For most people, activity shouldn’t be about getting great abs and bums. It might be more helpful to focus on having a healthy heart and lungs! In many instances, our minds eye can work against us achieving our goals. Some people see exercise as being more diﬃcult and the finish line as further away than others. For an exercise regime to be successful, it needs to foster positive emotions. Focusing on past successes and playing to your strengths are great ways to do this. Achieving your exercise goals relies on (i) establishing habits and (ii) an acceptance that habits take time to develop. Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet or pill, but there are a few things you can do to give yourself a fighting chance of maintaining that exercise regime long after the last of the Christmas turkey has gone.

Top New Year’s Exercise Tips – • Start at the beginning – I am reliably informed that it is a very good place to start! Begin with something you find relatively easy and enjoyable, you can always build on your progress. • Moderation – As much as we need to moderate our unhealthy behaviours, it’s also important to temper our desires for the seemingly healthy ones. Don’t overdo it and burn yourself out! This means realistic goal setting and keeping what you do varied and fun. • Try to make it a social occasion – One thing you can be certain of is that you won’t be alone in wanting to get more active in January. This is an opportunity to find likeminded people to share your journey. The ‘Leeds Let’s Get Active’ programme delivered by Leeds City Council could be a great place to start.

Keeping a record of what you have done is a vital part of the exercise jigsaw. You should routinely reﬂect on how far you have come, and don’t forget to celebrate your milestones, however big or small. By Stephen Zwolinsky. Stephen is a researcher in the School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University who recently led a study (published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health), which suggests reducing sedentary time and increasing light intensity activity as a more realistic and achievable goal for the long-term inactive.

New Project Addresses Alcohol Use Among the Over-60s esilient not Reliant is a pilot project aimed at over-60s in the LS7 area. It’s funded by the Leeds North Clinical Commissioning Group in partnership with Leeds Community Foundation and run by Royal Voluntary Service. The purpose of the project is to promote healthier drinking habits, boost confidence, encourage activity in the community and support people to revive old hobbies or discover new ones. Research has shown that over 60s are increasingly at risk of feeling isolated and without purpose after retirement and risk becoming

depressed. This can lead to an increase in alcohol consumption. Middle-aged people are three times more likely to drink every day than younger people and preventing alcohol related diseases is one of the NHS Leeds North CCG’s priorities. Resilient not Reliant allows people concerned about their alcohol intake to access support in a friendly and non-judgmental environment, so they can re-engage with the community and take on positive challenges. It has helped people become involved with volunteering, attend art classes, experience opera, access benefits, attend dance classes, and get out more.

usic teacher Jane Barrow is organising a concert on Saturday 28th January, 2pm at The Venue, Leeds College of Music, to showcase the talent of around 30 of her past and present students. Ranging from those relatively new to playing the piano, through to those post Grade 8, and some who are now perusing music as a career, it should be an entertaining afternoon. There will be many different genres of music, including Naomi Adams (16) who will play and sing her own composition. There will also be vocal, guitar and acoustic sets from other students. Jane has been a private piano tutor for over 25 years. As a child she performed widely and won the under 16 piano section on the programme Junior Showtime for three consecutive years. In recent years, she noticed a lack of opportunity for young pianists to experience the thrill of a live performance and to develop their confidence and skill, so she is thrilled to be arranging this concert at such a great venue with its two beautiful Steinway pianos. The whole school community, parents, families and the PTA, held a number of events in support of the charity, having been inspired by the story of Luke Harrison, who has been diagnosed with leukaemia. “Watching Luke and his family battle against his leukaemia and seeing how they all benefitted from the work of Make-A-Wish, was the reason I selected it as last year’s chosen charity”, said Catherine Dodds, Head Teacher. “His story inspired everyone to do something to make a difference and help children like him through a difficult time. The amount we have raised will pay for at least two children and their families from our area, currently living with a serious illness, to have their wish granted for the holiday or experience of their dreams.”
